EDITOR’S NOTE HELLO BEACHSIDE RESIDENTS!
M
y name is Thomas Carrigan and I have come aboard the pirate ship known as The Beachside Resident to do some contributing work. Writing has been in my blood since I decided to take a journalism course taught at Satellite High School by the legendary Mark Schledorn in 10th grade. By my senior year, I was the Sports Editor for the yearbook and newspaper staff and went on to write in college for the University of South Florida’s daily paper The Oracle. After transferring to Brevard Community College, I played baseball there and did some stringing work for Florida Today and later, Space Coast Daily. I did mostly sports stories for SCD and a bulk of my work was with the Space Coast Sports Hall of Fame, interviewing inductees and writing recaps of their lives. Needless to say, I loved hearing about their lives and putting words to print.
Which is why I want to surround myself with our publisher Craig Harriman, new Editor-In-Chief Sharon Lacy and all of the other remarkable writers. They truly believe in Cocoa Beach/Space Coast and all of our local businesses and want to see this town grow. This town is changing and I would like to be a part of that. I appreciate the Resident for letting me throw my two cents in the hat and look forward to serving this community well. If there’s anything you’d like to see, feel free to email me at
321thomascarrigan@gmail.com. Thanks all! It’s off to Happy Hour! Cheers,
For the past eight and a half years, I have been the bar manager at Siam Orchid in Cocoa Beach. I love my job and I’ve always said that I’m not in the bar business, I’m in the people business. I’ve always been surrounded by great ownership and staff and when you surround yourself with those, anything is possible.

EAT WELL What a World Cup! LIVE WELL acai bowls
T
he 2018 FIFA World Cup, hosted by Russia, was one of the best of all time. The matches were extremely exciting and an absolute pleasure to watch. That was expected. This World Cup was unusual for many reasons. The fact that England made it to the semifinals was amazing. Also, many of the usual dominant teams did not make it to the final four (think five-time winner Brazil and four for Germany) and other teams like USA and Italy failed to qualify. Quite a few games were decided by penalty kicks. This made for a nail-biting finish pitting the goalkeeper one on one versus the best strikers in the world. The goalkeeper was really put to the test and you could feel the tension through the TV.
The first World Cup was held in 1930 and has been played every four years since, excluding 1942, when it had to be canceled due to European hostility leading up to World War II. The winner of the first world cup was Uruguay besting her South American neighbor, Argentina. However, no South American team made the semifinals, and as a matter of fact, all the final four teams were from Europe, adding to the madness of this year’s World Cup! What’s it like to attend the most watched sporting event in the world?
By Margot Goodlive
I spoke with native Floridian, Will Davenport. He traveled to Russia for the semis and finals. Like a lot of Americans, Will’s love for soccer is fairly recent. When we spoke I asked him to describe what it was like to experience the World Cup live. This is what he told me:
“The World Cup is a breathtaking event. It seems to be a grander version of a World’s Fair. People from all over the world are here with passion for their team and country. Yet everyone seems to have come together to cheer for Croatia (except for the French fans). As someone who has historically been uninterested in soccer and has no ties to the nation of Croatia, I never could have imagined the passion I felt for the Croatian team. Maybe it was me rooting for the underdog but I felt a piece of my heart was ripped out with a shot off the post and conversely the ecstasy of their two amazing goals! The matches had nearly given me cardiac arrest. In short, beyond my wildest expectations. The eyes of the world were truly upon these athletes.”

Yes they were, Will! In the end, France beat Croatia 4 -2. I’m sure Will and the fans of Croatia were heartbroken but we only need to wait four short years until the next World Cup. AUGUST 2018

RESIDENT OF THE MONTH
MITCH VARNES Written by Sharon Lacy @lime_and_a_coconut
M
itch Varnes, Cocoa Beach native and ardent surfer could very easily be a top spokesperson for athletic footwear. Move over Usain Bolt (just playing, he’s amazing), Mitch Varnes has been a top proponet for people strapping on their sneakers and heading outdoors for some healthy competition running, 15 years and counting.
also mainly to “have fun.” He says of his endurance events, “We try to make running fun, because running isn’t fun. So you’ve got to make it fun.” At any one of his events, in addition to beautiful waterfront courses, enthusiasts can expect to find a variety of music, food and beer, thanks to one of their main sponsors, the Florida Beer Company.
No stranger to success, the 10 year voice veteran of NASA’s shuttle launch countdown earned some of his fame and event producing prowess during the space program’s heyday. Working in Public Affairs, Varnes traveled the country promoting the accomplishments of the program’s space elite. Though his professional trajectory kept his starched collar buttoned high, his eyes never left the coastline. His passion for surf and the great outdoors anchored him here, in Brevard county, where his prolific second chapter in life cemented him as one of Florida’s greatest advocate/producers of outdoor competitive events, to date. Thus, the launching of SmoothRunning.org, a “producer of several of the most prestigious and unique endurance events in East Central Florida.”
Mitch Varnes’ list of accomplishments are long and distinguished. He and his team bring thousands of people each year to our beautiful coastline to participate in healthy lifestyle activities such as marathons, triathlons, pro surfing, kite-boarding, volleyball, SUP & kayak fishing competitions. Smooth Runnings has also earned the esteemed title of one of the “greenest producers of running and endurance events.” Mitch boasts, “We take pride in our events for their sustainability.” He then counted off the numerous efforts made to protect our planet through planning, recycling, composting and area restoration.
Varnes & his Smooth Running team have produced over 100 massively successful events around the county. His goal, by large, is to raise awareness for our area, showcase Brevard county and our space coast, but 10

ance O’Brien of Kulcha Shok Muzik is one of the most well-known and respected reggae DJs and promoters in the state of Florida. Under Kulcha Shok, he produces, promotes, and DJs countless reggae events throughout Florida each year (like his uber-popular Reggae Sundays at Wynwood Yard in Miami) and launches the careers of other reggae artists by leveraging his wellestablished platform. Known mostly by his DJ name Lance-O, this music industry powerhouse is also a life-long surfer who promotes the positive surf lifestyle within his Kulcha Shok productions.

Fall Classic, and Cocoa Beach’s Easter ProAm, announcing the Salty Sweet contest is what Lance-O looks forward to the most: “It’s such a good contest…super fun and everyone is great, from the surfers to the staff and spectators. They are very loving.” Perhaps the fact the Salty Sweet Pro-Am takes place in Cocoa Beach is part of its appeal for Lance-O, who says:
“To me, Cocoa Beach is the epicenter of East Coast Surfing. There’s always a wave to surf if your standards aren’t too high. The talent, the shapers, the museum and the events in that area just breathe surfing.”
Part of Lance-O’s involvement in the surf industry includes announcing at surf contests, something he has enjoyed doing since 1998. With a crisp, commanding voice honed from years as a radio DJ and a deep knowledge of surfing, Lance-O fills this role wonderfully. That’s why the Salty Sweet ProAm Contest in Cocoa Beach sought him out to announce their first event in 2014 and every year since; he has become a fixture at this popular annual contest. Though Lance-O has been involved with many large surf events such as the East Coast Surfing Championships, the Jupiter 14

Being involved with Space Coast surf events often gives Lance-O the opportunity to do something he truly loves: combining music with surfing. You’ll often see Lance-O DJing surf contest after-parties, bringing his extensive knowledge of reggae music to the surf massive. To Lance-O, it’s about having fun and sharing the stoke. To that end, he tries to mix the surfer reggae-rock vibe with the original Jamaican reggae sound. He says, “We just keep it positive & strictly good vibes with feel good music. It’s all about the vibe. Once the vibe is there, nothing else matters.”

Big thanks and much respect to Lance-O for all he does for both the surf and reggae communities in Brevard County!
Kulcha Shok is organizing the Ocean Love & Muzik Fest for Saturday, February 9th, 2019 (three days after Bob Marley’s birthday). The event focuses on the love, appreciation and respect that Lance-O and Kulcha Shok have for the ocean. There will be non-profit organizations there that protect, enrich & honor the ocean as well as ocean activities like surfing, paddeboarding, skimboarding, and ocean-minded musicians on the beach in Deerfield Beach, FL.

“As far as most overrated drink, I would have to pick the Amaretto Sour. It’s just a little too much sugar. Most underrated would have to be the classic drink, the Old-Fashioned. A simple drink with great flavors that’s commonly overlooked.”

TELL US A QUICK HORROR STORY ABOUT A BARTENDING MISTAKE YOU MADE.
“I’m not a big fan of squeegeeing off the patio.”

Needless to say, I don’t use trays for those Bloody Mary’s now.”

SMOOTH SAILING PADDLERS BRING HAWAIIAN FLAIR TO JETTY PARK Words and Photos by Jamie Mackenzie
W
hen Scott Roche founded the Central Florida Canoe Club four years ago, he dreamt of the day he would host an Ocean Regatta for paddlers across the state. That dream became reality on July 14th, 2018 when paddlers from Jacksonville, Clearwater, Miami, and other Florida Canoe Clubs gathered at Jetty Park in Cape Canaveral. Light winds and glassy seas provided perfect conditions for the ½ mile race, which was modeled after the annual Walter J. McFarlane Memorial Canoe Regatta at Waikiki Beach. Seventy paddlers took turns propelling three 6-person Outrigger Canoes called “OC6”s, which were all weighted equally at 400lbs, and raced ¼ mile out to a buoy and back to the starting flag. After an incredible showing during the battle for the win, the Cocoa Beach Women’s Team took first place in their heat. Congratulations are also in order to the Clearwater paddlers, who won both the Men’s and Mixed divisions. With such a great turnout, this was a successful dress rehearsal for the Luau on the beach and races scheduled for May 2019 in Port Canaveral. Scott was driven to start the 9th Canoe Club in the State of Florida after commuting from Cocoa Beach to Clearwater regularly to paddle with friends. The Clearwater Club agreed to sell him one of their OC6s, and the Lokahi
Outrigger Cocoa Beach Club was born. Currently 22 members strong, the club always welcomes new paddlers to the group. Although no special training is required, it is important to be a good swimmer with strong endurance. “Even very fit people are gassed the first time they paddle.” Scott said. Members meet every Sunday and some Wednesday evenings for fellowship and fitness, and there are also opportunities to travel to events around the state and country for additional races of varying distances and challenges. For example, the club is considering tackling the ChattaJack 31, a 31 mile Paddle Board/Kayak race through the Tennessee River Gorge scheduled October 27, 2018. Are you up for that? If not, there are many shorter paddles and even a kids program for younger enthusiasts!

So if you’re looking for something new and exciting to add to your exercise routine, or you just have a love of the ocean and want to meet new people while doing something fun, contact Scott Roche with the Central Florida Canoe Club through their Facebook Group and begin a new adventure today!
Scott and the Central Florida Canoe Club would like to give special thanks to the City of Cape Canaveral for allowing this family-friendly event, and to their sponsors, Rusty’s and FishLips Waterfront Bar & Grill. Mahalo!

SMOOTH SAILING
JJ TURK: POWERBOAT RACING By Thomas Carrigan
T
urk, along with his wife and son, has been the owner/ operator of the La Quinta Hotel in Cocoa Beach for over 25 years. But this Ocean Beach, California transplant has quietly carved out a reputation as a tenacious driver in the offshore powerboat racing world, and it all started out with a chance encounter in 2012 when powerboat racing Team Perdition checked into his hotel.
annual convention in 2014, Turk had another chance encounter, this time with Travis Lofland, an experienced throttleman for the Instigator race team and TV star known for his role on the hit show The Deadliest Catch. The introduction turned into talks of a future partnership. “I asked him, if I started a team, would he like to race with me?”
It was then that Turk met Team Perdition’s owner, Brian Williamson. As someone who grew up racing cars, Turk was intrigued by powerboat racing and offered to sponsor the team.
Lofland accepted the offer and Turk formed the No Vacancy Offshore Racing team, Cocoa Beach’s first and still only offshore race team. By May, Turk and Lofland were ready to compete in the Thunder on Cocoa Beach offshore race.
Perdition agreed, and what followed was a blossoming relationship between Turk and Williamson. “They offered me a huge sponsor sticker and invited me to… hang out with them in the pits. I followed them throughout the year and got a call before the 2012 season finale World Championships in Key West and was asked if I would like to drive the boat.” Turk pounced at the opportunity and raced with Team Perdition through 2013. While in Hawaii for a hotel owner’s

For all of the peaks that Turk has experienced, it wasn’t without some valleys too. In June 2017, at the Sarasota Powerboat Grand Prix, Turk was racing a new boat with 15-time world champion Johnny Stanch. Turk and Stanch led the first four laps from the start when disaster struck. Turk hit a high wave and rolled the boat.
AUGUST 2018
“The boat rolled over, I smashed my helmet on the window and Johnny flew over me. I saw the helmet pop up with no body connected to it. I literally froze in fear. It was one of the scariest moments of my life, thinking that I killed someone. Mark Austin, who was in the safety crew and part of the CB Fire Department was the first guy who came to my rescue. Stanch was thankfully OK.” Turk spent three days in the hospital with a broken leg and a vicious infection, but vowed to keep pressing on. Incredibly, only five months later, Turk was back behind the wheel of the Team Perdition boat. Turk and Williamson raced in the 2017 Englewood Beach Waterfest OPA World Championships. Only18 weeks
after breaking his leg, Turk emerged victorious as a world champion. “To be able to come off crutches and win a world championship was one of the biggest moments of my life,” Turk said. Turk was victorious yet again in the 2018 Sarasota Grand Prix and says he has some wonderful friends to thank for his success, from Will Smith of Phantom race boats to Bruce Baker from Express racing engines and Nick Stipanovich. “But more importantly, none of this would have been possible without my family and all of the sponsors that Cocoa Beach has provided me. I couldn’t have done it without them.”

Walking BeneFITs! The word is out! Walking is in! You can do it inside or outside or standing in one place! I have used the delighted Steven Wright’s take on walking, when we enjoyed him at the King Center, to enlighten and inspire clients and students to keep on walking! “Everywhere is within walking distance if you have the time” ~Steven Wright Seriously, according to FITness experts, the gentle art of walking can confer an array of health beneFITs. In fact, by briskly walking a 15 minute mile (that’s 4 miles an hour, or 140 steps per minute) you can burn nearly as many calories as the best jogger on the same course and with little risk of wrenched back or hip, knee and ankle strain. When Hippocrates said, “walking is man’s best medicine” he didn’t realize that thousands of years later, new beneFITs of walking would be discovered daily. You can earn a wealth of health beneFITs because walking: • • • • • • • • • • • • •

TAURUS: You might surprise a few people with your words and actions, which could seem out of character for you, Taurus. There is a streak of the oddball inside you that wants to have its day in the spotlight. Let that part of you shine through. Let your freak flag fly and express yo-self. GEMINI: You could feel like a giant wrecking ball and taking out everyone in your path. Perhaps you’re upset about a new development in your town or maybe you’re simply in need of a sponsored shopping trip to the mall. Go nuts and show everyone your crazy eyes. A well-orchestrated tantrum should get the desired results. CANCER: Keep pen and paper close by, Cancer, and have the county commissioner’s number on hand. You’re apt to come up with some original ideas that could be revolutionary. You posses the power to make cunning observations about how things work. Ed Martinez enjoys candid insight on how the city could run better, give him a holler. LEO: You may have endless ideas streaming through your head but little patience to see any of them through to the end, Leo. Perhaps you’re so busy jumping from one thought to the next you don’t take any of them far enough to know whether or not they’re worth pursuing. Give your overactive brain a rest and go do some yoga. VIRGO: It’s OK to voice your opinion, Virgo. You pride yourself on being the solid one who always has an answer and you look upon others wondering how they make it through life. Dear Juliet, I’m a girl who likes to keep my options open, and all my eggs from landing in one basket. I have a few suitors who like to take me out on fine dining experiences. I canʼt resist a free meal at a posh place, so my question is, how do I juggle all those dinner suitors? Sincerely, Princess Buttercup Cocoa Beach, FL
Dear Contessa, The proper answer would be: no woman should depend on a man for a meal. Any meal. Even if it’s at some swanky haute cuisine that serves a clever amuse bouche to arouse the palate. Be that as it may, a lady must eat! Therefore I would advise you to proceed with prudence. A refined date is far and few between, particularly one who can discern the difference between a paté and a delicate foie gras. My first and only bit of advice is such: never, ever be spotted with a different suitor at the same establishment. In fact, it’s best to keep your beauregards to different zip codes and play it safe. Heaven forbid your sexy French server smile coyly at you and casually say, “Mon dieu! Miss Juliet, you and your very handsome date were here earlier this week, no?! Shall I order you your usual?” A cautionary tale we can all learn from. Safe travels, my friend and bon appétit!

Juliet, given the realities of life as we know it, how often would you say a couple should have sex? Mr. Frustrated on the Couch
Dear Discouraged, The obvious response is three times a day, six days a week. However, in the interest of preventing the misery of ardent advances rebuffed, I will enlighten you on those who’ve yet to liberate their lusty levees. In short, your overall success may all depend upon your lady’s mood. Arousal, for many women, starts somewhere in the six
inches between her ears. While your six may already be swelling with notions of amour, she might require a bit more finessing. Nobody wishes to feel like a piece of meat (in case you do, please DM me directly). Your queen wants to feel sexy and desired. If extra attention is what she needs, perhaps dinner, wine and a handbag or two will be sure to flip her switch on. Dear Juliet, My boyfriend’s mother is bat shit crazy. She manipulates my man and makes digs at me every chance she gets. I also work for her, where she treats me like two-day-old trash. How do I handle this wild woman? Susan, Indian Harbor Beach
Oh honey, I’ve dealt with my fair share of mama’s boys. My first tidbit of advice is to handle this hand that rocks the big boy cradle with the utmost politeness and class. Evil such as this lives for a reaction. I would also suggest you firmly educate your man as to why this type of abuse cannot be tolerated. If he chooses to disregard this warning, DO NOT ENGAGE FURTHER. Grab his best hoodie and hightail it out of there. Otherwise plan on looking forward to a life time of misery and homicidal calculations to keep you warm at night. Working with a lover’s crazed relatives is not the place for you. Go find yourself an orphan who will make you the one and only queen of his castle. Dear Jules, How do you feel about what your partner does for a living?
My mother always told me; don’t date a trucker or a musician. While we’re on the subject, steer clear of mouth-breathers and mama’s boys as well. Naturally, I don’t follow any of these rules. Taste the rainbow! Stay wild, my friend.
