CONTENTS

You may know someone, or know of someone, who could use a hand-up. Our hope is for you to take this information and educate those who are in need of the different programs and resources available to them.

We here at The Beachside Resident are charged with great responsibility. The information we produce must be integrous, and our content, fun and progressive. We are dedicated to bringing awareness to the environment and humanitarian efforts in and around our community. Though our message is often light and playful, we understand our obligation to keep you informed. However, we also wish to entertain you. Which is why we enjoy our jobs here at The Beachside Resident. There is no shortage of information to report on and we find our topics from not only our hard-hitting, investigative reporters, but also from you. You should hear the things often left on the cutting room floor… HILARIOUS. Thanks for always keeping us in the loop when important matters arise and require our platform to be addressed. Our team thanks you for your support and the feedback we continually receive. Did you know we are a veteran owned and operated company? Craig Harriman, our Executive Director and fearless leader, is an Decorated Combat US MARINE Veteran. I, myself, am an ARMY veteran. Support and outreach programs for veterans are near and dear to our hearts, which is why we wish to highlight The Cocoa Beach and Viera Elks Lodge initiative—to protect and support our prior-service military. “The Elks National Veterans Service Commission pledges to service to our nation’s veterans and military members, with a special focus on service to those in need. Thousands of Elks volunteers give generously of their time, energy and resources to serve veterans and military members each day, to ensure that pledge is not an idle one.” You may know someone, or know of someone, who could use a hand-up. Our hope is for you to take this information and educate those who are in need of the different programs and resources available to them. Veterans are brothers and sisters who made a pledge to be a guardian of freedom and the American way of life. Our greatest offering of gratitude is the humanitarian support we can offer them, now their service to this great country has been fulfilled. Personally speaking, I am passionate about our military, past and present. My hope is for each and every person who has ever served their country to know how much their sacrifice means to me—to us all. If you know someone who steps into their uniform and straps up each day, for whatever foreign or domestic threat that may await them, tell them thank you. Let them step before you in line. Offer them the respect and honor they deserve. These men and women have made a brave choice to serve America. Many watch vigilantly, day and night, while we casually move through our lives. Honor your service people. Support our veterans. Pay your respects to those who gave the greatest sacrifice of all. I stand to attention, with my hand on my heart, and eyes on “Old Glory:” I pledge allegiance to the flag of the United States of America and to the Republic for which it stands, one Nation under God, indivisible, with liberty and justice for all. Thank you for reading. I hope you enjoy this month’s publication. Sincerely,

Account Manager extraordinaire, Matt Herold, is a northern transplant from Ohio, who’s not the least bit conservative. He gets the job done. He has a pretty face and good hair. He’s smart, funny and wildly popular with the men folk. He’s also a yoga teacher in Merritt Island for H.O.T. Yoga on the Island. Not just any yoga teacher, he teaches with flair and authority, all while wearing sparkly, spandex pants. Seriously, he’s tough! Matt is also a vegetarian, who will occasionally eat sushi (we’re tailing him with a P.I. to see just how far he’ll step over the vegetarian line). He’s organized, dependable and stares you straight in your face when you ask him to do something, with a look back that suggests he’s got it handled. Matt keeps us together. He checks facts and offers lively commentary at just the right time. He’s a beach bunny (see photo) cat loving badass. We’re stoked to have him on our team. If you call us, he’ll probably be the one to answer, so tell him a joke, he has the best laugh.

MONEYTALK By Steve Hauser

SURF GIRL WORLD This is the first in a series to discuss money: How to make it, save it, invest it - whatever. Mostly we’ll merely scratch the surface of a topic, and that’s OK. Feel free to dig deeper on your own. No topic is off the table and I’ll answer questions as they come. I’ve seen people make the same avoidable mistakes over and over. My aim is to break that cycle. I have no intention of offering advice. Rather, I hope to introduce some ideas and mindsets to help build and maximize your nest egg for retirement. My first finance professor at UCF used to say “Money isn’t everything but it’s way ahead of anything else in second place”. While this might be disturbing on several levels, it makes a point. Money makes life easier (and sometimes more complicated). Either way, let’s get started. Before investing, most planners will tell you that we should all have life insurance and three month’s salary saved for emergency purposes. Anything less assumes some risk, and that becomes a personal decision based on your own risk tolerance and personal situation. The younger you are, the more important this next part is… invest in your future by contributing to an IRA or 401k plan at work; check with your tax preparer for eligibility. It takes a lot of discipline, but pay yourself first. If you’re new to investing, this will be your entry point. Most retirement plans feature mutual funds and we’ll cover those in the future. We will discuss investing and some simple strategies, but we’ll also touch on banking, insurance or anything else that might help you wind up with more money down the road. Final thought, losing valuables can be expensive. When going to the beach, manage your keys, money and jewelry. The people with metal detectors scanning the beach are not looking for stuff they’ve lost, they’re looking for stuff we’ve lost. Next issue’s “Moneytalk” segment will highlight a simple way to get out of debt and a brief introduction to the markets. Send questions and comments to: spacecoastmoneytalk@gmail.com.

By Melissa Diamond Nelson girlsurfsworld83

During sunrise surf checks, I met with other locals on the boardwalk and we usually stayed long enough to sip coffee and exchange surfing tales. I loved to transport my friends to far away corners of the earth when I shared highlights from my surf travels. I told of the raw, soul-gripping terror I felt from being circled and chased by a great white in South Africa. I shared about the giant set that capsized my boat right in the middle of the lineup in Bocas del Toro, and the fear and peace I experienced when I believed I was going to die getting held under at Cloudbreak in Fiji. You see, spending time in the wilderness guarantees adventure, and the ocean is no exception. My surf adventures started beyond the boardwalk, 16 years ago, at 16th street. There, I rode my first wave and that holy moment, gliding on saltwater glass, stole my heart and soul. With each wave I rode, my devotion grew stronger and I built my life around the curls and crests of the Atlantic. I waited tables in the evenings at Grills Seafood Deck and Tiki Bar so that I could get in the water before the wind distorted the surf. When it was flat, I worked as a substitute teacher. I was also able to share my passion for surfing by teaching at the Ron Jon Surf School. I didn’t mind juggling three jobs because they all offered the freedom and funds I needed to explore different waves and new oceans. I even pursued a dream job in Nicaragua and instructed at all female surf camp and later helped open a surf school in Panama where I taught at a reef break.

Through it all, Cocoa Beach has been the ideal launch pad to start and finish from. I’ve always returned with plenty of boardwalk banter to offer, and it all eventually culminated into a book titled Girl Surfs World. My book also includes classic tales of the East Coast like surfing hurricane swells and an encounter with a giant hammerhead at an infamous “sharky” Florida beach. As much as Girl Surfs World is a quest to taste and see swells around the globe, it is also a spiritual journey. Using the medium of the sea, God has whispered truth to my soul and been my salvation in more ways than one. Girl Surfs World is an invitation to drop into a wave of adventure and a call to stop chasing your dreams and live them. You can purchase Girl Surfs World on Amazon. You can also read my surf stories at www.girlsurfsworld.com or for more info contact me at www. girlsurfsworld@gmail.com

KEEP FLORIDA WEIRD Naked Chef A man was arrested in Vero Beach after breaking into an elderly woman’s house, getting naked, and making spaghetti. The man got dressed after finishing his meal and fled the home. The woman then ran outside and flagged down a deputy who was already searching for the man. He was apprehended a few streets over. The man told deputies he was “at a friends house where he ate spaghetti and bathed”. He couldn’t remember who his friend was. There’s an App For That A homeless street artist was arrested in Miami Beach after stabbing a tourist with scissors held in his feet. The man, born with no arms, claimed it was self defense, while the tourist, from Chicago, claimed he was only asking for directions. Leaping Lizards! A man made a beer run to a Jacksonville convenience store while carrying a live alligator, and then posted a video of it on Facebook. The gator had its mouth taped shut and the man can be seen in the video running towards customers with the gator. Florida Wildlife officials are looking into whether the man did anything illegal, but it’s safe to say don’t take your pets on a beer run. Fake it Till You Make It A Republican candidate for office in Florida admitted she faked her diploma, and does not plan to drop out of the race. It’s only considered a misdemeanor in Florida to lie as she did, and seeing as our president lies constantly this is really just business as usual. Especially in the GOP. Ear Muffs, Children! A man in Clearwater was arrested for climbing on a crowded public playground and giving a vulgar description detailing how babies are born. Parents scrambled to remove their kids from the playground as police arrested the man. He was forced to pay a fine and ordered to stay away from the park, and the parents were forced to have “the talk” with their kids.

RESTAURANT OF THE MONTH

DARCI’S BACON & BLUES Written by Courtney Wolfgang Additional Editorial Collaboration by Sharon Lacy With a name like BACON on the marquee, one should expect to be greeted with a menu chock-full of bacon-related novelties. I’m here to tell you, Darci’s Bacon Blues is delicious and doesn’t disappoint. With everything from country-fried bacon to bacon salsa to a vanillabacon milkshakes, swine lovers will swoon over the offerings at Darci’s. The Beachside Resident’s Sharon Lacy and I walked into Darci’s after our rigorous Wednesday morning yoga practice, hungry for our morning feast and caffeine indulgence. The atmosphere was clean, spacious, and full of rich wood tones. The down-home décor told a story of southern charm and throw-back, blues-related nostalgia. Of course, the most notable (in addition to being our personal favorite) feature was the large screen TV, highlighting the star of the show, sizzling bacon in a pan. Brilliant! We each selected our morning cup of caffeine from a generous menu of prepared coffee creations and set to discovering the modest selection of bacon-based delights. The menu’s offerings are as unique as they are mouth-watering. Sharon and I, both, enjoyed custom egg scrambles from a list of toppings like veggies, cheese and of course—bacon! Our meal was prepared fresh to order, flavorful, and not at all too greasy, as often is with some hash houses. My favorite was the cheesy grits. As a fourth-generation southerner from Atlanta, I am particular about my grits. And Darci’s were on point— not too runny, perfectly cooked, and full of the sweet taste of hominy.

14

Most notable, other than the savory deliciousness of our morning meal, was the warm regard each of the staff shared with us. True to their down-home theme, the waitstaff at Darci’s showed us true, southern hospitality enhanced by their warm smiles and easy conversation. As for Darci herself? This restauranteur is clearly full of passion for her business’ concept, easily discerned in our conversation with her. It was evident each of her patron’s meals were prepared under her careful direction. Darci tells us it all started with the quote “If you don’t have bacon, you get the blues.” She and her “Team BACON” crew ran with that idea, incorporated their southern flair, and set about conceptualizing creative menu items. Darci welcomes creative input from the team and works hard to maintain a fun atmosphere. “We believe when you have a happy staff, the rest will follow,” says Darci. As far as what Darci considers their featured dish? “We would have to go with our grit cakes. You won’t find anything else like them around here. They are featured on our “Bennies” (our twist on Eggs Benedict) or can be ordered on the side, as well.” Darci and her Team BACON have received a lot of support from the community and feel very fortunate for the opportunity to serve their guests. We salute you, Team BACON!!

RECIPES By Misti Blue Day

Smoothie a Day Keeps the Doctor Away Improving health and quality of life can be achieved with a morning routine. We are creatures of habit and tend to take up to a month to break and form habits. Starting your morning out with a fresh smoothie can boost your energy and make you feel better. We often have plenty of options lying around the kitchen to make a beneficial smoothie blend from scratch. Skip the preservatives, dyes, artificial flavors and sweeteners and whip up your own healthy batch. I used a banana, handful of fresh spinach, a few slices of frozen peaches, ginger tea and a splash of pineapple juice for the base. I sprinkled in a generous amount of cinnamon, ashwagandha root and local honey. One slice of watermelon and a few ice cubes later, you have a blended brew of beneficial freshness. Ashwagandha is an Ayurvedic herb root that has anti-cancer properties, reduces cortisol levels, helps reduce stress and anxiety, improves muscle mass and strength while also reducing inflammation. Local honey fights infection and helps with local allergies.

muscle aches and nausea. The beauty of a homemade smoothie is that you can substitute juice for tea, kombucha or even water if you are low on option. I always keep frozen fruit in my freezer. If I can’t eat my fruit in time before it goes bad, I freeze it for a smoothie later. I keep spinach on hand to help with my iron levels. If I don’t have fresh ginger or ginger tea then I go to my spice cabinet. Turmeric is also an anti inflammatory that could work well in a smoothie, though I prefer it it in my meals. You can balance your body and correct deficiencies, imbalances, energy levels, mood and health ailments with what you eat and drink. As you can see, there are many benefits that plants have to offer and it will literally save you a headache not having to process unnatural ingredients. www.mistibludream.com

Watermelon has multiple beneficial plant compounds and is high in vitamin C and A. It is also lowers inflammation. Watermelon keeps you hydrated and can improve heart health. This melon is great post workout because it increases muscle recovery. It has also been know as a natural Viagra. Ginger, yet another anti-inflammatory, can treat indigestion, menstrual pain, SEPTEMBER 2018

hen I hear the term outer space, I’m filled with both wonder and bewilderment.Trying to comprehend the magnitude of what lies beyond Planet Earth makes my brain hurt a little, but I am fascinated by it.And since the nighttime sky has been unusually clear with Mars shining so brightly this summer, SPACE has been in the forefront of my mind more than ever.

They design and manufacture cutting-edge rockets and perform several launches each year for clients such as NASA, the US government, and various satellite communication companies. Since the onset, their goal has been to revolutionize space technology and reduce the costs of space travel to eventually enable humans to live on other planets.

Needless to say, I couldn’t be more thrilled to live on the Space Coast, host to some of the world’s leading aerospace companies who make it possible for me to watch launches on the beach a few blocks from my home. But despite my intrigue with space, I actually know very little about what these incredible companies do beyond “launching rockets.”

That’s right. I said OTHER PLANETS. Can you imagine human civilizations existing on entirely different worlds?! The technology and ingenuity involved with making life possible in completely alien environments? This is stuff out of a Sci-Fi movie. This is the future, folks, and it is happening in our backyard as we speak.

So when I learned September would be The Beachside Resident’s Military and Technology issue, I couldn’t wait for the opportunity to learn more; surely a write-up on one of these spectacular companies or some of their glowing achievements would magically

Though interplanetary travel is the ultimate goal, the road to making it a reality is long and arduous. In the meantime, SpaceX has been accumulating groundbreaking accomplishments in Cape

appear in our editor Sharon Lacy’s hands. But as the deadline drew near, a willing aerospace writer seemed nowhere to be found. And that, my friends, is how a space-noob like me ended up volunteering to write about SpaceX, the ambitious aerospace enterprise lighting up Brevard’s skies with its fantastical launches year after year.

Canaveral that are certainly steps in the right direction. For instance, in 2010, SpaceX proved it could return a spacecraft from low Earth orbit, and in 2012, its Dragon spacecraft successfully delivered cargo to and from the International Space Station.

Here’s what I’ve learned so far. SpaceX was founded in 2002 by visionary entrepreneur Elon Musk. 18

thebeachsideresident.com S E P T E M B E R 2 0 1 8

Last year, SpaceX made history again with the reflight of an orbital class rocket that had previously been launched and landed; now, flight-proven rockets are regularly launched and landed in spectacular fashion as can be witnessed from Brevard county

beaches (if you’ve never witnessed a rocket coming back for a landing, definitely put it on your Bucket List). This year, SpaceX started launching its Falcon Heavy, the world’s most powerful operational rocket capable of supporting missions to the Moon or Mars. In store for 2019, SpaceX plans to restore manned space flight to the United States for the first time since 2011 by sending astronauts to the International Space Station. With these advances, SpaceX believes they’re on track to start missions to Mars in 2022.The first will be a cargo mission to establish the basic infrastructure to support human life. Manned missions to Mars could begin as early as 2024, at which point the first Mars base could be established.According to SpaceX’s website, after the base is complete,“we can build a thriving city and eventually a self-sustaining civilization on Mars.” Reading about SpaceX’s plans for Mars puts me into intense

daydreams about what it would be like to live on the Red Planet. Though it seems like it would be dusty, dry, and desolate, it is fascinating to imagine what a colony on Mars could mean for mankind’s future. And to think our very own Cape Canaveral is the backdrop for one of the most significant advancements our species might ever experience! We are truly lucky to call the Space Coast our home.

KEEPING OUR COMMITMENT TO U.S. VETERANS

ORGANIZATIONS FORM ALLIANCE TO PROVIDE FURNITURE TO VETERANS RETURNING TO MAINSTREAM SOCIETY

Every night, as many as 40,000 Veterans are living on the streets. They sleep in automobiles, homeless camps, and under expressway overpasses. They get food through sharing centers, food pantries and sometimes dumpsters. Though each with a different story, they shared a common pledge: to support and defend this country. Their service is over, now it’s the Elks turn to serve. That’s why the Cocoa Beach Elks Lodge 2387, Viera Elks Lodge 2817, Volunteers of America-Florida (VOA-FL) and Down the Road Thrift (DTRT) have formed an alliance to provide affordable furniture to Veterans moving into permanent housing.

and Protective Order of Elks, will never forget them.” The approach is simple. The VOA-FL provides access to the Veterans, the Elks and the SSVF (Supportive Services of Veteran Families) arm of the VOA provides the funding and the DTRT provides the furniture and delivery. The VOA-FL, whose mission is to “Help this Most Vulnerable”, owns and operates Veterans Village, a 40-unit, 80 bed apartment complex that provides single Veterans and families with temporary housing.

The goal of the SSVF is to place homeless Each Elks Lodge has recently been awarded Veterans and families into permanent, affordable Elks HQs Focus Grants worth $4,500 to provide housing throughout the County, by providing this furniture. The Elks have a pledge that reads, temporary financial assistance along with “As long as there are Veterans, the Benevolent supportive services, include providing Veterans 20

with temporary housing, access to the VA medical/dental care,VA disability compensation/ pension benefits, substance abuse counseling, mental health services and training, education and employment services They play a critical role in referring Veterans to other organizations, like the Elks, who provide the necessary support to get the Veteran back into the mainstream society. Since 2014, the SSVF has serviced 965 Brevard County Veterans in the areas of Rapid Rehousing and Homeless Prevention. Once the Veteran is placed in permanent housing they provide beds, mattresses and bedding to each household member. They are connected in the community; especially with the Elks and DTRT. According to June Straka, Regional Program Manager “SSVF is a unique program that offers a hand up, not a hand out”.

In December 2017 DTRT was established in Rockledge as a 501(c)(3) organization. Owned by Jerry Vaughan, a Navy Veteran, and Bobbie Warner, the company provides multiple services from allowing Veterans shop for household items, providing clothing and selecting and delivering affordable furniture. The Viera Lodge, located on US1, 1.5 miles south of DTRT promotes a multi-faceted Veterans program consisting of Veterans Day Dinners, support to Honor Flights for World War II and Korean War Veterans, sending “Care” packages to Veterans deployed overseas and will soon be participating in an Elk’s wide Welcome Home Kit (WHK) Program. The Cocoa Beach Lodge operates one of the most robust Veterans Support Programs in Elkdom through Grants and other Lodge generated funding. All the Grant funds have been directed toward the 80 residents in the VOA’s Veterans Village. Annually, the Lodge provides $6,000 worth of personal hygiene and cleaning supplies, haircut vouchers, bus passes and a spring cookout.

A few of the 209 Welcome Home Kit Recipients. See https://www.facebook.com/ Elkslodge2387/videos/1455250204595973/ for a short video on Elks support to this program

In 2014, the Lodge began purchasing WHKs that contain household items that turn a house into a home e.g. kitchen items, shower curtains, small appliances. To date they’ve purchased 209 WHKs valued at $42,387. Their program is so successful that the Elks National HQs asked the Lodge to produce a short film clip shown at the 2017 National Convention. The film has been shown nationally and has resulted in getting other Lodges to participate in the program. During the first weekend in August, both Elks Lodges made their first purchases of furniture using 2018-2019 Focus Grants. The members of the alliance work in cooperation with one goal in mind, to protect and support our prior-service military. Who Is Mr. Beachside?

There are so many great beachside residents on which to report. However, I had only to look across the office from where I sit every day to find one great American / beachside resident I am proud to report on. Being that I am the Editor-in-Chief for this rag, I have decided to take it upon myself, amidst much protest from the man himself, to bring to light someone I am proud of. He’s a moderately modest man who doesn’t often get the accolades he deserves. Outside from being my boss and friend, he is (most importantly) a decorated combat U.S. Marine veteran, and his story deserves to be heard. So who is Mr. Beachside? Well, that’s Craig Harriman. Craig was born in Belfast, Maine. He spent the majority of his childhood riding fourwheelers, hunting, camping, fishing and exploring the great outdoors. His family owned a True Value hardware store for 20+ years, where he learned much of his work ethic. He fast-tracked through high school, graduating in just three years, followed by two years at Southern Maine Community College. In 2001 he signed up for the delayed entry program with the United States 22

thebeachsideresident.com S E P T E M B E R 2 0 1 8

Marine Corps, with an M.O.S. of Presidential Security Forces. On September 11, 2001, while attending college, he watched as two planes collided with the Twin Towers. Immediately, he made a willful choice to approach his recruiter and enlist. By the second day of the new year, 2002 , he was standing on the yellow footprints at Paris Island, South Carolina. After 13 weeks, he graduated from Boot Camp, and was soon after shipped to the School of Infantry where he specialized as a heavy machine gunner. After graduating the School of Infantry, he attended the Marine Corps Security Forces school where he specialized in close quarters battle (CQB). After graduation, he received his first orders to Washington State where he worked in classified operations. After two years of being an operator, Craig was promoted to Security Force Instructor where he spent a little over a year training students in CQB, physical security, and other special tactics. While at this duty station, he also received his 1st Instructor black belt in the Marine Corps Mixed Martial Arts program.

In late 2004, he received orders to Camp Lejeune, North Carolina and was assigned to a special unit preparing for deployment to the Iraq war.Tasked as a small unit leader for a combined anti-armor team, he specialized in transportation of high-risk personnel and high level dignitary security. He served two back-to-back tours in Operation Iraqi Freedom (OIF), in addition to a classified area near Sadr City Baghdad. After the war, he received orders to Brunswick Naval Air Station where he served as an Infantry Inspector Instructor. His primary duty was to train infantry reserve units to fight in combat. His secondary duty was to serve as head of the Marine Corps Toys for Tots program for the state of Maine, raising money for children in need during the holiday season. He was also assigned duty as casualty notification wherein he was responsible for family notifications of killed in action (KIA) Marines or deceased Marines. Essentially, once the Marine’s body came off the plane, it was in his stewardship until it was laid to rest. He has ushered many of our fallen heroes to their final resting spots and attended many funerals.

BARTENDER OF THE MONTH Q & A INTERVIEW WITH PROFESSIONAL BARTENDER SHANNON BREARLEY OF TIME OUT SPORTS BAR If you haven’t been to Murdock’s Bistro in Cocoa Village, we recommend you consider it for your next meal. The food is outstanding and the service is always good, but that’s not entirely why you should visit. The staff is colorful, quick witted and wickedly sassy. Which is what makes this delicate rose such a sweet compliment to the bouquet. She’s precious. When she smiles it makes you feel all warm and buttery. That’s probably how the trouble gets started… Go for the food, but stay for the chirp of this sweet, little strawberry-blonde bird… Shelby “Yam” Gordy.

Q A

Rockledge. I’ve moved to a couple different states, but I couldn’t stay away from the beach, so I had to move back.

Q

WHAT DO YOU LOVE MOST ABOUT LIVING/ WORKING HERE ON THE SPACE COAST?

A

Definitely the rocket launches. I have the (rocket) count down on my phone for every one of them. No matter what time of the night of it is, I have to see them. Also the variety of people I get to meet. All the tourists that come in to see the launches and our beaches - I like to meet all these new people.

Q A Q A Q A

24

WHERE DO YOU LIVE?

WHAT’S YOUR FAVORITE THING ABOUT TENDING BAR? Honestly, the people. I’m such a “people person”! It’s fun to sit back and pour beer and meet different people. It’s my favorite thing to do in a restaurant because I like the change of pace, I like the people, I like the creations you get to make - it’s fun!

WHAT’S YOUR LEAST FAVORITE THING? When somebody complains there’s not enough alcohol in their drink - even when you’ve measured it. You ask them if they want a double and they say “no, I just want more alcohol”. I think to myself, well that’s a double… (Editor’s note: Don’t be so stingy, Yam! Pour that drink good and hard.)

WHAT’S THE STRANGEST THING YOU’VE WITNESSED FROM BEHIND THE BAR? I have seen some strange things from behind that bar. Probably a customer putting chicken wing bones in her purse. I asked her if she had a dog or pet, because naturally I was curious, and the only response she offered was “no”. (Perhaps voodoo?) I was very nice to them the rest of the evening, that’s for sure.

Q

WHAT, IN YOUR OPINION, IS THE MOST OVERRATED DRINK OUT THERE?

A

Easily a Long Island Iced Tea.You’re trying to get some kinda drunk if you drink a couple of those. Can we just retire that drink already?

Q A

WHAT IS YOUR OWN DRINK OF CHOICE?

Q A

WHAT WOULD YOU ORDER FOR YOUR LAST MEAL?

Q A

WE HEAR YOU HAVE A SPECIAL “FAVORITE SHOT”. WHAT IS IT?

Q A

Mojito, hands down. I’m such a mint person. I love mint, and I love to muddle. It makes me feel like I’m kind of a pharmacist.

Well is that with my diabetes or without? But if it’s my last meal and it doesn’t matter, I would order the largest plate of garlic bread, and all kinds of pasta. Probably carbonara. I would absolutely go into a carb coma.

We have a board with all our specialty shots. They’re named after people who work here. Mine was a Red-Headed Slut (clever). However I can’t drink that because of all the sugar in it. Although tequila is my favorite, at that time I was on a big whiskey kick - so I was like, you know what, the “Type 1” is a shot of whiskey. A straight shot of whiskey. Diabetic friendly.

ANYTHING NEW COMING DOWN THE LINE? WE HEAR THERE’S A NEW RESTAURANT COMING… We have a board with all our specialty shots. They’re named after people who work here. Although tequila is my favorite, at that time I was on a big whiskey kick - so I was like, you know what, the “Type 1” is a shot of whiskey. A straight shot of whiskey. Diabetic friendly.

PARTING WORDS OF WISDOM? Stay humble.Treat others as you’d like to be treated. I have to tell myself that 50 billion times a day. I just count to 10 before I say anything. If I don’t count to 10, people will start to scatter. #redheads

Dear Juliet, My boyfriend likes to get it on at night, he said heʼs a better performer at night. I like it in the morning, just before he makes me pancakes. How can we compromise? Compromise is a harsh word and really doesn’t fit my vocabulary, I prefer convince or command. Most men can’t turn down a beauty in the bedroom, so if I were you, I’d convince him that you are compromising and give it up a night or two. When morning comes, start with some sweet words and compliments, and don’t take no for an answer.

Dear Jules, Football season is here and my girl hates sports. She only wants to watch reality TV. How do I tell her itʼs sports season and this is what weʼre

going to watch now without her planning my assassination? Iʼd advise you to not approach this situation demanding what she does and doesnʼt watch. Do you watch her reality shows with her? Iʼm assuming not. Your best bet is to keep football for watching with the boys. If you donʼt have two T.V.s Iʼd rush to your nearest store and pick one up.

Dear Juliet, My man wonʼt let me have a puppy, but I want one really bad. What would you suggest? My motto in life is “Iʼd rather ask for forgiveness, rather than permission.” You’re a free soul, and if you want a puppy and are willing to accept all the responsibility that comes with it, do it Doll. And worst case scenario, you lose the man and keep man’s best friend.

F…FUN… Look to nature to make it more fun and meaningful for you! There’s nothing more INSPIRING than getting back in touch with nature. Use the beach, ocean, grass, trails, trees, outdoor stumps/ rails/benches, as your obstacles or equipment! You can’t beat a bit of fresh air and vitamin D; infused with a healthy dose of vitamin SEA. The great outdoors can naturally motivate you to train a little harder with a sunrise or sunset as your backdrop. Think, solar-power energy! You can get back to basic FUNdamentals and training by using your own body weight or by being creative and innovative on your walking route. In doing so, you can improve your body’s coordination, agility, balance, strength, dexterity and other basic skills that we tend to lose as we age and move less. Sitting in your chair? Slide forward and do some tri-cep dips. You can add medicine balls, tubing or old broom sticks, walk on your toes, walk in a straight line, do lunges, carry light dumb-bells/soup cans/water bottles to work your upper body to add variety and creativity.

Exercising with other people develops team bonding, social skills and healthy conversations; they’re also highly motivational. Group exercise programs, using simple calisthenics, were inspired by the real O.G.: military bootcamp. Your health and fitness choices guarantee living life to the fullest with better thinking and mobility for our golden years. Strive for self-care accountability, instead of depending upon the health care system. Have FUN being creative. Take the work out of work-outs and put “play” and “fun” back into fitness. It’s RECESS! HOROSCOPES ARIES: It’s good to take stock of where you are in life, Aries. Make sure your head is in tune with your heart, and not stuck up your arse. Think about your emotions and patterns to determine if your actions have been a result of a rational mind. Go to the beach and think about what you’ve done. Don’t forget sunscreen, you could be there a while. TAURUS: Your mind is buzzing like a bee, Taurus. You’re apt to find there’s very little you can do to slow it down. Make the best of this hurly-burly and clean your house. Your head may be a mess, but your laundry is what’s really suffering. GEMINI: Mornings aren’t usually your best time, Gemini. You don’t shine before nine, and everyone knows it. Morning nookie will get your mental clarity dialed in. Surprise your lover with some pre-alarm affections and see where the day takes you. CANCER: Your world may seem rather tight and rigid, Cancer, but the good news is things can change in an instant. Even if they seem one way at one point, more than likely they’re going to manifest themselves completely differently later. Whistle while you work and annoy everyone with your optimism. Good things are coming your way. LEO: This is your month, Leo. Your freedom-loving nature isn’t built to deal with heavy emotional baggage and turmoil, so don’t bother trying. Live wild and free. Other people’s problems are not your own. VIRGO: Prepare for a surprise this month, Virgo. Perhaps it will come from someone else or perhaps it will come from you. Either way, by mid-month you’re apt to be feeling quite lovey-dovey and rather spaced out. Give in to the lethargic attitude that might sweep over you. Go ahead and put your work aside; have a good time and let your emotions dictate your actions.

LIBRA: Things seem to be going quite well for you in many respects, Libra. Your thinking is clear, your emotions are under control, and the puzzle pieces are fitting into place. Take advantage of your good fortune and go play the lottery. SCORPIO: This month could be a tough one for you, Scorpio. Careful where you step, there could be a lego waiting in your path. Pre-plan for a health and wellness day and call in sick to work. The cosmos has plans for you and it looks sketchy. SAGITTARIUS: Clean up your house, Sagittarius. It’s messy. CAPRICORN: Tempers may get hot this month when someone says something that pierces you to your core. Address this problem right away, Capricorn. Instead of letting it fester, plan your attack immediately. When was the last time you toilet-papered someone’s yard? AQUARIUS: Don’t be so crazy that you lose focus, Aquarius. And don’t be so focused you forget to enjoy. Inspiration is coming down the pipeline, so get ready for it. But not too ready. You have to find the balance between seeking and obtaining, giving and receiving. You’ll soon get everything you want. Or not. PISCES: Impulsive actions are no stranger to you, Pisces. It’s easy for you to be overcome by emotions. You’ll find soon your head and heart will be aligned on important issues. So start listening to both, and aim to create a healthy, working balance between the two, rather than the back and forth you have going on now.

Who Is Mr. Beachside? While stationed in Maine, he received medical treatment for injuries he sustained in 2010 and was medically retired. That year, he left the state of Maine and headed to Cape Canaveral Air Force Station as a federal police officer. There, he was assigned a few very prestigious special assignments. When Obama came to Kennedy Space Center in 2012, Craig was selected to drive the lead security vehicle in his convoy. During his years at the Air Force Station, he worked many launches. He even worked special detail on the last couple shuttle launches in history. Some days he gets that far-away look on his face and regales his excitement in meeting the many astronauts and dignitaries who shook his hand over the years. In 2012, he took over representation of The Beachside Resident syndication, where he learned his passion for storytelling and reporting. Nearly simultaneously, in 2013, he stepped into the private sector and began work renovating and revitalizing properties within the greater Cocoa Beach area. I’m often in awe of the dedication it must’ve taken to operate a publication and transition to the private arena at the same time. I’ve transitioned out of the military myself; going to the mall to buy new sneakers nearly broke me. As though that weren’t enough, within that year, he also created the Cocoa Beach Friday Fest, which still exists today, and attended the Florida Main Street conference where he helped establish the Cocoa Beach Main Street program. Craig has served as the Marketing Director/ Production Manager on local events like the Cocoa Beach Art Show,Thunder on Cocoa Beach and The Legend of the Seagullmen. Some of the events he’s partnered with are Surfing Santas, Operation Surf and Surfers for Autism. In 2017, 28

thebeachsideresident.com S E P T E M B E R 2 0 1 8

he started the Eastern Pro/AM and served as the Executive Director for the event. Recently he’s worked on many community revitalization projects. Craig has helped incubate over 13 local businesses within the downtown Cocoa Beach community, and is also the founder of Mai Tiki Market. This year, The Beachside Resident hosted our first annual Mai Tiki Carving Contest where we gave $5,000 in prize money to the best tiki carvers in the country. Craig’s concept for a tiki carving contest was a hit with the community. In fact, we’ve scheduled April 20, 2019 for the second annual event, so now it’s a thing. This guy is a maverick when it comes to brainstorming and fund-raising and we couldn’t be more proud of him for the events he’s conceived of and cultivated. Not to brag, but Craig has even served as a Board of Director for a couple years on the Cocoa Beach Kiwanis Club.

Last year he helped lead the charge in raising over $10,000 for the Cocoa Beach Roosevelt playground. His passions include skateboarding, surfing, VW’s, woodworking and reggae music. He is a father of two beautiful girls. He has a gorgeous girlfriend who pierces the masses with her custom jewelry (Whitney Bailey, Endless Summer Tattoo), three dogs, three chickens, five fish and one fine pig named Hammy. Craig is an environmentalist at heart with a goal to better our environmental guardianship. He has a great passion for the ocean, and especially our lagoon. He plans to use his platform with Beachside Media and The Beachside Resident to raise awareness about local beachside subjects that affect us all. Craig believes in our community and that ultimately, the change must start with us.
