t’s October, which means it’s a great time to celebrate! Let your freak flag fly! I would encourage you, this month, to frolic, make mischief and party your ass off. We kicked off this month with a cover that pays tribute to the music makers and the rump shakers. We celebrate the colorful personalities that surround us and keep things interesting. There’s something to be said about being truly authentic. Authenticity is the spice of life. For some, October justifies a reason to slide into a costume, alter one’s ego and act inappropriately in appropriately inappropriate places. For others, it’s an excuse to shed the corporate layers and paradigms of our modern society, and metamorphosize into the animals they were designed to be. Then, there are those who walk through life knowing exactly who they are and don’t give a damn what anyone thinks. I tip my hat to those people. They who brave society’s judging eyes and face the world with brazen confidence. Player play on, you wild thing, you! Your colorful ways brighten the canvases of our lives. I love to party. I love to let my hair down and get my freak on. I run with a wild group that keeps things interesting. They don’t break the rules (mostly) and they all hold down righteous occupations. However they are woke AF and they don’t give a damn what others think of them. These people I call friends walk through life with a certainty in knowing who they are and what they want out of it, and I think they’re the most inspirational people anyone could ever ask for as friends. You know who you are… The Beachside Media crew are just a few of these folks. They’re creative, witty, intelligent and keep my days interesting. It’s a mixed up, messed up world out there, and it’s easy to get swept up into the vortex of all that brouhaha. We make sure to carve out time to play and make mischief. We’ve been cooking up some fun at the Beachside Media Funny Farm, and we think you’re going to like it! This issue is dedicated to “the party”. Whatever that is, wherever it is, make sure it happens. Be good to yourselves. Life is short. Get out there and have some fun with it! It’s been Africa-hot outside and our bodies are steaming. The luminous Ms. Shelby “YAM” Gordy from Murdock’s Southern Bistro was our favorite whiskeyslinger of the month. Much to my dismay, we also duplicated one of her responses. What we meant to publish was: Anything new coming down the line? We hear there’s a new restaurant coming… “The Village Joint”. Our crew is going to be back and forth, sharing between both places. It’s going to be very gimmicky, very cool. In my opinion, it’s going to be one of the coolest things to happen to the Village. We are keeping the cuisine a secret, but it’s going to be pretty neat. Should be opening just around the new year.

She is the youngest of five, which suggests she ought to be spoiled; however, if she is, you’d never know it. Amanda enjoys the simple life she has carved out for herself and her pampered pups. There have been rumors of her dogs taking over the world, but unfortunately, their legs are too short and they seem to enjoy the coolness of Amanda’s shadow a bit more than world power.

ast month, we established a starting point which included insurance and emergency funds before investing. Excessive debt should also be eliminated.

Monthly payments feel like you’re running in sand. It is nearly impossible to get ahead of them, no? Assuming you can stay current on all payments, consider this easy way out. Arrange your debts by size. Focus on the debt with the smallest balance, pay more than the minimum due and pay it off first. Next, use the money used to pay on that loan and apply it to the next smallest balance and work your way up. If possible, stop buying on credit. Consider how much more you could buy if you didn’t have to pay the interest charges. That’s enough math for one day. When you pay anything above your normal payments on a loan, clarify if you’re making extra payments or paying down the balance. The lender will lean towards counting it as extra payments. Your loan should pay off faster if you apply it to the balance. So, what are stocks and where do they come from? Joe and Mary make the best widgets in the world. Demand is strong but they can only make them so fast. They need to expand production but have already exhausted their life savings to get this far. They are willing to sell a portion of their company to raise funds so they can grow. Fast forward past all the regulatory crap (you’re welcome) and investment banks will bring their company public with an IPO or Initial Public Offering. Normally, investment bankers reserve the shares for their biggest customers. When those customers sell them, they are sold on a secondary market like the NYSE or Nasdaq. That’s where we can buy them. The New York Stock Exchange was founded in 1792. Regional exchanges opened later and in 1971 Nasdaq opened. What does this mean? When we buy or sell securities, we place an order through our broker and they present that order to the market. It’s an efficient ongoing auction driven by supply and demand. BOOK REVIEWS The Iconic Time Box

By R. Bruce McGill # 9781947718142, $24.95 www.amazon.com Since the classic H. G. Wells novel “The Time Machine”, a popular theme in science fiction novels has been time travel. The question is always how well is it handled? Often authors with scientific backgrounds fill the work with factual speculation of what it could be and not enough with characterization. Fortunately, that is not the case with “The Iconic Time Box”. Duncan Sims sacrifices his relationships with his girlfriend and others to accomplish the ultimate feat of time travel with an interesting device. He is able to cruise into the future then returns to what he thinks is the present a few minutes later but is made aware he has been gone for over a year. With the aid of another person interested in time travel he is able to use a device named Pandora 8 to go back in history but is not able to control where he goes until he meets up with a noted scientist who helps him steer the device. Along the way he is able to encounter many historical figures as well as experience events firsthand. “The Iconic Time Box” moves along at a brisk pace filled with numerous conflicts, solid characters, as well as interesting situations Duncan encounters. A very important portion of this wonderful novel is how something that happens in England during WWII plays a very important role in the rest of the story. The author is obviously a fan of science fiction as he also pays tribute to many different aspects of the genre in a very charming novel. “The Iconic Time Box” is left open for many sequels that is for anyone who looking for a fun-filled science fiction story to read and enjoy

An Innocent Client

By Scott Pratt # 9781480030473, $12.95 www.amazon.com “An Innocent Client” opens with attorney Joe Dillard having to deal with a suspect in jail who is a scumbag that he was appointed by a judge to defend. As the book proceeds along he is hired to defend a woman for the charge of murder where he is being paid a lot of money. Throughout the work Dillard continually would like to believe there is someone he defends that is innocent. Dillard is a sympathetic character because he has a mother suffering from Alzheimer’s, a drug addict sister who gets a new chance on life by coming to live with Dillard’s family but screws up by stealing from them, and cases he would rather not take trying to do the best job under the circumstances. There also is a cop who will stop at nothing to convict someone while Dillard goes before judges who can’t stand him, making “An Innocent Client” a page turner that is the first of a series. DRINKING AND STOPPING Police were called to a Vero Beach McDonalds after a woman reported a man kept hitting her bumper in the drive-through. When the police arrived and approached the car, the man said he was feeling “pretty good” all while drinking Jim Beam from the bottle. He further explained he was only drinking when the car was stopped at traffic signals, but alas his drunk rational didn’t work and he was taken to jail.

FAMOUS FARTS A security guard went viral after uploading videos of himself farting to his Instagram account. Unfortunately, his boss was less than amused and fired him. He wasn’t fired for the fart videos exactly, he was fired because he uploaded content on a client’s property while wearing his official uniform. Despite his setback he is optimistic and plans to keep making videos using his pseudonym, hoping for social media stardom.

A republican candidate for the House of Representatives believes she was abducted by aliens at 7 years old. She also claims she saw a UFO when she was 17 and has been telepathically linked with aliens since. Seriously people, I’m not even making this up. VOTE in November!

UNUSUAL SEX ED A dance teacher in Miami-Dade was fired for allegedly throwing a surprise party with X-rated decorations and favors at school. The party was for a former male student, and was equipped with penis hats and a vagina cake. The teacher had the party in her classroom after school on a Wednesday. Maybe it wouldn’t have been such a big deal if she was the health teacher.

“ALAS, POOR YORICK” Shoppers at a Publix in Sebastian, Florida, reported seeing a homeless man carrying an actual skull and using it as a puppet. The unidentified homeless man lives in the woods across the street from the grocery store which is where he found the human remains. He decided to carry the skull into the Publix to report the body, and after the deputies removed the remains he went happily back to his woods. OCTOBER 2018

From the parking lot across the street, the first image summoned to mind when approaching the Sandbar Sports Grill is that of one of those decorator crabs that has scuttled its way across the ocean floor, adorning its shell with the various trinkets and treasures left behind by plundering pirates and cutthroat conquistadors that fell unfortunate victim to the sometimes angry and unpredictable Atlantic Ocean. Most days, though, Poseidon lay dormant, beneath the calm and balmy Atlantic waters that lap at the sun-kissed shores of Cocoa Beach, where the Sandbar Sports Grill decorator crab has made its home for over thirteen years, beckoning to thirsty and heat-exhausted beach-goers with promises of of respite from the occasionally oppressive Florida sunshine, in the form of ice cold draught beers, fish tacos, and frosty blended margaritas... naturally! Even on the inside, almost every foreseeable surface area has some sort of keepsake, collectible or sports memorabilia ornamenting its exterior (conscientiously catering to the multitudes of us that suffer from adult ADHD, no doubt…). After entering through the yawning mouth of giant, stone Polynesian Tiki head, you’ll walk down a hallway lined with photographs of survivors of the “5lb Big Burrito Challenge”, the various celebrities to have graced the interiors of its humble presence, and mementos of the frequent fundraisers and charity events that the Sandbar is known to host, sometimes several in a month. Coowned by Mike Phelps and Andrew Bunin, the Sandbar is a neighborhood fixture and actively participates in a variety of events geared to support the local community. It’s a happening place -- there is live music featured here nearly every single night of the week, and you’re practically guaranteed to find the big game or fight you’re looking for on one of over twenty flat screen TVs. It’s got a laid-back, Old-Florida dive bar 14

vibe but the quality of food and service is anything but divey. It’s a casual, open-air establishment that’s easy to feel at home in because everyone is just there to have a good time, and you can tell they came to the right place! The Sandbar offers an “Escape from the Ordinary”, in the form of Mexican-style pub grub, served until midnight every night (midnight munchers rejoice!). The menu is eclectic enough to satisfy a variety of appetites that need replenishing from an exhausting day at the beach; from delicious fish tacos and seafood platters, to juicy burgers and New York style pizzas, there is something everyone can, and will, enjoy. The joint is considered family friendly until 10pm., and kids have a variety of tasty options to choose from as well. There’s a different daily special starting at 4pm every day, so be sure to take advantage of halfprice Taco Tuesdays, or co-owner Andrew Bunin’s favorite, Sandbooze Sundays (the name, I believe, speaks for itself). Whether you’ve traveled straight down Route 520 from Orlando International Airport in search of the nearest beachside oasis (“Where 520 Meets the Beach!”), or you’re celebrating a new surfboard purchase from Ron Jon’s, the Sandbar Sports Grill is the place to go to kick back, relax, and unwind from the daily grind and settle into vacation mode, whether you’re actually on vacation or not. Expect to see sunburnt tourists gulping frosty buckets of Coronas and reggae-loving locals stopping by to check the scene while the dance floor heats up to the soundtrack of a favorite local artist, and be sure to try the famous “Category 4 Hurricane”, because here in Cocoa Beach, we don’t run from hurricanes; we drink ‘um!

RECIPES By Misti Blue Day

October is such a transitional month. Hurricane season is almost over and the tease of a cool breeze is on the way. It’s time to start getting festive and decorating. Food can be fun and still be healthy and delicious. I am offering a spooky dinner dish and side that will be a hit at any party. Everything is also gluten-free, and can be dairy-free as well. Most importantly, none of the ingredients call for scary preservatives, dyes or fillers. You won’t feel like a pumpkin after this meal! It is so delicious that it will haunt you forever with cravings.

Stuffed Taco-Lanterns Peppers & Fresh Salsa Salad Stuffed Taco-Lantern 1 pack of Gardein meatless crumbles (you can substitute with meat) 1 can of black beans 1 small 4.5 oz can of green chiles Season with onion powder, garlic salt, turmeric and cumin Orange bell peppers Sriracha Spinach Goat cheese (optional) Preheat the over to 375. Mix the meatless crumbles with black beans, green chiles and spices on medium temperature, enough to warm it up and mix everything together. Cut the top of the orange bell pepper off and remove the seeds on the inside. With a small knife, cut different jack-o-lantern designs into the peppers and then stuff them with the mix. Top with goat cheese,

unless you want a fully vegan dish. Place the peppers and lids on a foil covered baking dish and cook for 20 minutes. Line the plates with fresh spinach and place the peppers on the spinach. Decorate the top of the peppers with a little bit of Sriracha. The Sun Shines Down as Cocoa Beach Grows

he sun shining down on the growing plants was the perfect backdrop for the grand opening of the Pathos Community Garden in Cocoa Beach.The ribbon was cut by Garden Manager, Carolyn Wainwright, while the city commissioners and mayor stood with her. A Master Gardener, Carolyn spearheaded this project with the help of Cocoa Beach City Manager, Jim McKnight.The Pathos garden joins the Ethos garden at Florida Institute of Technology and Logos garden in Satellite Beach as a sister garden in the Community Garden Network of Brevard.The

beds were constructed with the assistance of the CBHS Key club and interested citizens under the direction of a master gardener John MacDonald, Bob Day of the Cocoa Beach Sustainability Committee, and the Community Garden Network of Brevardfor a combined total of 147 volunteer hours.The beds have a micro-irrigation system which is on a timer with a rain sensor to prevent over-watering. Each bed has a placard indicating the sponsoring citizens or business of the bed.The gardeners of the beds can choose what they could like to plant; the freshly planted

gardens.The Marine Resources Council, UF IFAS, and the Cocoa Beach chapter of the Surfrider Foundation were also present at the event to share lagoon, landscape, and ocean friendly information. If the formation of the garden in and of itself was not enough to show how much of a community effort this truly is, the Cocoa Beach Community Church will be using the yield from their bed to help residents in need obtain fresh produce.

Hi guys! My name is Maverick. I’m a 5 year-old blend of the finest Pitt Bull and Chocolate Lab and I live in downtown Cocoa Beach with my Dad, Jeremy Edgar. Dad rescued me from a life unknown when I was only a year old. He told me my first family had to up and move to London on short notice and they couldn’t take me with them. I was too young to remember the details, but I can confidently say it ended up being one of the best things to happen to me, because now I get to hang out with my Dad over here Beachside.

Even though I love playing on the beach, swimming isn’t really my thing. However, the best thing ever is cruising around town in our golf cart. It’s the greatest feeling with the wind blowing on my face going from place to place. I don’t like when dad leaves me home alone so I learned if I give him a good pouty face he’ll take me just about anywhere he goes. We spend a lot of time in the hardware store but mostly places that serve up tasty treats. I think Dad may like to eat more than I do. Mostly, I’m into adventures and socializing. I’ll go TBR1810 Pet of the Month_ Maverickanywhere with Dad and I’m definitely DTP. That means I’m down to party. You can catch me and my Dad hanging at my favorite spot,Twin Finnegans, chilling on the patio at Surfinistas, or I absolutely love walking around downtown during Friday Fest. I also love long runs alongside dad as he skateboards or bikes around town. If you see me don’t be scared to say hello, I’m a polite dude and I’m super gentle (especially with the lady-folk). I’m a lover, not a fighter. I’m into petting, snacking, napping and long walks on the beach. My dad is my everything. Though we spend a lot of time out and about we 20

We feel people want to be entertained.They want a reason to come into your restaurant.Then others also want a comfortable environment and a friendly staff, where you can come in by yourself or with a large group and always leave with a smile.That’s what sets us apart; the live music, the sports, the specials, and of course, the people. What’s your favorite party you’ve ever hosted?

Who owns this joint? Andrew Bunin and Mark Phelps (like the swimmer, same body type too) Tell us a little about both your personal and professional backgrounds. Personal and professional. Let’s go with professional first.When Mark graduated college from the University of Wyoming with a business degree, he felt he should take it to California and the first job he got was as a bar manager in San Diego.As for me, I used to lay carpet with my Uncle Michael and hated it, so I was in search of a job that did not involve crawling around on the floor all day. I know Mark did a little work on some oil wells back in Wyoming and I guess we both worked in restaurants in our hometowns growing up. For personal, we both live in Cocoa Beach. Mark is married to Stacy, a collegiate top 100 women’s tennis player back at the U and they have two boys, OP and OP2. I live with my girlfriend and have two boys as well. How did you come up with the concept for your restaurant? How long did it take you to perfect it? The concept for Sandbar Sports Grill pretty much came to us. They say do what you love and you’ll never work a day in your life.Well, we both like to be the host of a party, and we both like sports.When we bought Castaways, it was a long time beach bar in Cocoa Beach.We incorporated our concept mixed with the beach, threw in some bands and some great specials and the town has really enjoyed the product thus far.As far as perfecting it, as you know nothing is perfect in life. Every day in the restaurant business is a challenge.When we come to work we try to play the perfect game. I joke with my employees about the 95 Devils (my favorite all time team), which is a great TEAM. Everyone does their job! The payoff is seeing all the people enjoying themselves in my restaurant.When you have days like that it seems perfect! How did you two pair up to open a restaurant? We paired up back in 1994 in a bar called Billy Bones in Pacific Beach San Diego. Mark was the bar manager and I got hired as the cook. Mark and I spent many of nights rebuilding an old rundown bar and turned it into Schooners Bar and Grill. It soon became a

hot spot just off Garnet Ave. in PB.After working at a few other bars on Garnet we got hooked up with Eric Leitstein and Joey Longo and opened up Canes Bar and Grill in Mission Beach.We were the second largest music venue in San Diego at the time and saw many acts on their way up and on their way down. Eric and Joe learned from Moose McGillycuddy‘s and we learned from them. Next we opened an Irish bar in Pasadena California, called McMurphy’s Tavern. Mark was the general manager and I was his bartender. In 2000, I moved back to Miami with Joe and opened up what we thought to be the next Cane’s Bar and Grill but the University of Miami had that copyrighted. So one day Joe and I were at the Sandbar in Key Biscayne and looked at each other and said “What about Sandbar?“ and it was invented! About a year later Mark then joined the team in Miami, but this time I was his boss and he was my bartender.After the 2004 hurricanes it just so happened our realtor’s mother from Miami lived across the street from the pier when she came up here to help. She saw that Castaways was for sale and it was time for Mark and I to go out on our own. What inspired you to open up a restaurant? Well, like I said this is pretty much all we’ve done for the past 15 years.We were lucky to work for people that let us run their business like it was our own and make some mistakes with their money (like how the Sandbar Koozie came about). But we saw the quality of life that owning your own business gives you, plus the opportunity to do something we really enjoy. I mean we’re the host of a party everyday!! Which dish or recipe are you most proud of? The obvious answer here would be the fish taco. But honestly I am proud of our entire menu, with the unique items like gator tail tacos and conch fritters. Our burgers and pizza are hidden gems in this town. Our salads are giant and fresh.And as far as seafood dishes go, I’ll put our steamed shrimp with seafood blend against any in town. I love to see the look on people’s faces when I put an order of nachos down in front of them. I get that WOW effect I’m always looking for. Tell us what it is about your restaurant that sets you apart from the rest.

Over the years, Mark and I have hosted so many fun parties -from being the afterparty for Prince and having to get him purple M&Ms back in San Diego, to the Rose Bowl games and St. Patrick’s Day parties at McMurphys Tavern, and of course UM’s National Championship and that Jeremy Shockey touchdown to beat FSU down in Miami. But here in Cocoa Beach we have so many fun events -- of course Mark Longnecker’s Dub Massive party is huge every year, and our first Sandbarapalooza comes to mind.At New School Dropouts, Rockstock we had 20 bands over a weekend, and of course the 3-pound burrito eating contest every Cinco de Mayo is always on the top of my list! What is something on your bucket list? Although I’ve been living by the beach for many years, I would not call myself a surfer by any means.As far as a bucket list goes I would love to get into a barrel one day.As for Mark, he would like it for me to stop being a pain in his butt (see the Billboard on 520 and the City Bus I put his picture on). What’s your favorite perk of being a restauranteur? There are many perks to owning a restaurant -- you never have to bring lunch to work LOL! We are very lucky that we have probably the best management staff in town.They allow Mark and I the freedom to go visit our Key West location and spend time with our families. Mark replies king crab legs. For me, I would keep it a simple tuna fish on a toasted bagel with steak fries and Heines ketchup. Where do you spend your time when you’re not running one of the most exciting restaurants on the Space Coast? Like I said, when we’re not at Sandbar we are usually with our families. I can most likely be found at the Space Coast Iceplex either playing an ice hockey game or helping coach the kids. I asked Mark what he does in his spare time and he reminded me he enjoys shooting guns. Any upcoming events or plans for the future? Sandbar always has events going on, where should I start? There’s the Conor McGregor UFC fight on the 6th, and we have our 13th Annual Okto-Beer-Fest to help raise money for the Space Coast sled hockey team on Saturday, the 20th. Our Country Hoedown is on the 27th and the Jam Halloween contest is on the 31st. November 21 is our wing eating contest and then our Reggae NewYear’s Eve, and then back at it with Dub Massive on 1/26/19.

Like clockwork, the fall mullet run is in full swing. The welcomed arrival of these bait fish make for a fishing bonanza that is accessible to everyone. The surf and inlets are on fire right now during the tide changes. Snook fishing has been phenomenal, along with big bull red drum, tarpon and Spanish mackerel. Use a cast net to catch the finger mullet or use a small hook and dead shrimp to catch croaker and spots. These fresh live baits are what they are naturally feeding on, so like always, match the hatch to increase your chances. All Water Adventures’, Captain Adam Sadr, has been advising his customers to not get “far-itis”. A common mistake this time of year is thinking you need to go far offshore or deep to catch monsters. The monsters are

all within a few hundred yards of the beach. Snook, red drum, triple tail and Spanish mackerel are common targets this time of year but be ready for giant tarpon, sharks and goliath grouper that are also lurking at the same ambush points. These are true monsters that are easily accessible during the mullet run so if your dream is to catch something that will go 100lbs or better this time of year is full of possibilities. Fishing is fantastic right now so make the most of it. You can fish from land, kayak, pier, personal boat or take a charter and your odds of a great catch are in your favor. In 200 AD Galen of Pergamon speaks to the intelligence of the body to take in nutrients and incorporate them into healing, growth and repair. This logic has been lost in the profit of allopathic medicine. The fundamental importance of individuality in diet and nutrition are repeated again and again throughout the times all over the world! How misled we have been when it comes to this concept of basic nutrition. Vitalism engages the life energy to re-establish health. Health is not the absence of symptoms, it is not lack of disease; health is about having a truly vital physiology, and about having a clear and consciously directed mind. It’s about having a buoyant and awake emotional state. It’s about enhancing our spiritual awareness, and about being conscious about healing ourselves on these deeper levels that we all experience in our lives. We want healing that isn’t just fixing what is broken, that isn’t just alleviating our symptoms, or taking our pain away, but gets down to these deeper levels of healing. By clarifying our mind and senses, healing our hearts, our traumas, and our past, and ultimately enhancing our awareness and our connection to the deeper parts of ourself, removing those blockages and obstacles that prevent us from walking our true path helps us live in accordance with the purpose that we were meant to fulfill here with our time on this earth. THE 33RD ANNUAL NKF RICH SALICK PRO/AM SURF FESTIVAL

early 400 professional and amateur surfers competed in the 33rd Annual NKF Rich Salick PRO/AM Surf Festival. The popular Surf Festival presented by Ron Jon Surf Shop included world class surfing and the Taste of Brevard/Silent Auction to benefit the National Kidney Foundation of Florida raising thousands of dollars, while building awareness of kidney disease and the need for organ donation. Proceeds collected will benefit the programs and services of the National Kidney Foundation of Florida, helping patients with kidney disease. The charity surf event was a great success, bringing in thousands of beach goers and spectators who enjoyed the surfing, tandem exhibitions, skate ramp on the beach, and nightly events including a fashion show and the premiere of the documentary Andy Irons: Kissed by God. The weekend long surfing competitions wrapped up with pro and amateur finals on Labor Day. This year’s first place professional winners not only won cash, but also an increible piece of art donated by Cris Woloszak. Cris is an internationally revered artist whose custom culture background led him to create his own style

and techniques that are used in different ways throughout his collection. This year his donations included a beautiful octopus which appears to be backlit because of his unique manipulation and treatment of the metal he painted. For the amateurs, Chuck Crawford handmade airbrushed trophies which were true to the style and design of the late Rich Salick. Congratulations to all competitors and a special thanks to our volunteers and sponsors for making this year’s event the best one yet.
