Editor’s Note Spring is in the Air and change is a Coming! Spring is in the air and change is a-coming! Everywhere I look, there seems to be something new popping up. A new build here, a new parking garage there; hot dining spots and freshly painted exteriors everywhere. Development and growth is good - change may be difficult, but it’s necessary. Renovations and updates to the township help to keep businesses and commerce thriving, which means a healthy community and better economics for local businesses. Beachside is growing up and it looks great! I have a strong suspicion this is going to be a good year. Make sure to step out and take advantage of all the new attractions and restaurants opening their doors. There’s plenty do do with all the festivals and fairs this time of year. The weather may be shifty but the good times roll on! Pack a light coat and head out doors to make the best of our greatest treasure - beachside! I leave you a good-times song that often plays in my head: I see trees of green, red roses too I see them bloom for me and you And I think to myself what a wonderful world I see skies of blue and clouds of white The bright blessed day, the dark sacred night And I think to myself what a wonderful world The colors of the rainbow so pretty in the sky Are also on the faces of people going by I see friends shaking hands saying how do you do They’re really saying I love you I hear babies crying, I watch them grow They’ll learn much more than I’ll never know And I think to myself what a wonderful world Yes I think to myself what a wonderful world “What a Wonderful World” Written by Bob Thiele and George Weiss Immortalized by the great Louis Armstrong May you all be blessed with abundance and happy homes. Sincerely,
Sharon Lacy Editor-in-Chief

C O N T R I B U TO R S P OT L I G H T DR. JOSEPH G. SMITH, A.K.A. “FURSEY O’VEEBEE” Sir Joe, Dr. Joe, King Natchyo’. One man, many nicknames - and there are more, many more. We know him best as Fursey O’Veebee. Nobody does it like Fursey, so we asked him to write his own bio. You’ll understand why, soon enough. He’s a maverick with words and a damn, fine fellow. We can’t get enough of him. We’ve considered creating a plaque in his honor. He’s a doctor, a writer, a misfit, a father, our friend and a down-ass dude. You’ll see him peppered throughout our pages because his expertise spans the gamete and his words make us giggle. Please enjoy… “The Fursey”: I hail from Virginia Beach, Va, and started coming to the Space Coast in the 80s to see my buddy R-O-Y aka “The best DJ in Palm Bay”, may he rest in peace. I’m an old 1980’s Punk Rock Surfin’ dude who started skateboarding in the 70s, and started snowboarding in 1986 as a Combat Medic in the Army. I love professional rasslin’, making and drinking craft beer, grilling, super-hot peppers, growing vegetables, making hot sauce, a nice mosh pit, bourbon, and old sci-fi to name a few things. I have a lovely wife, Sondra, 4 daughters: Christina, Jessica, Emily, Ariel; and a son Joseph Jr. I started reading The Beachside Resident about 10 years or so ago after reading “Enquire of Romeo”. I thought Romeo Pomodoro was the funniest MF out there. I love all types of music: ska, rockabilly, death metal, old school rap, jazz, punk, new wave, reggae, calypso, old country, bluegrass and more…but then my father in-law William Stevens, aka One-Arm Willie (R.I.P.), turned me on to the Blues. I was amazed at the volume and variety of Blues music out there and how it, The Blues, had a baby and they named it Rock-n-Roll. Me and Willie had fun going to many Blues festivals, getting overserved, waking up with a headache and doing it all over again. Unfortunately, Blues Boy Willie passed away this past September, so I have tried to keep his memory alive by writing about the Blues. But make no mistake about it, I am still an old punk-rocker who will mosh with the best of them. I still love a nice front-side grind on pool coping, a nice warm-water front-side hack, and I will be searching for Animal Chin until I die. Yes, I am a biochemist turned physician, a lower extremity specialist, a Wound Doctor with a bunch of initials after my name, but who cares about that? Not me. It’s just my job. It doesn’t define me. I love this area, it is one of my favorite places in the world.

ON THE COVER Florida’s colorful and culturally diversified coastline boasts some of the most coveted real estate on the east coast. While new construction threatens to take over the state, some strongholds still stand. Remnants of “Old Florida” stylized architecture can still be found in Miami, Florida’s South Beach. MONEYTALK By Steve Hauser
This being the real estate issue, let’s consider it as a piece of the investment mix. It requires more active management than most of your other investments. The first concept to consider is to not overextend on a mortgage. A conservative approach is best; the economy and markets will cycle around and wash out those not prepared. There are many rights that come with land ownership: the right to occupy, the right to rent, the right to dig and all the water/mineral rights therein; the list goes on (subject to local laws). Property lines extend down to the center of the earth and up into the sky. Aircraft have the right to fly over so forget about charge a toll for passing through your airspace. The first real estate investment, for most of us, is our home. Mortgages come with a variety of choices. The monthly payments for a 15 year loan are not twice that of a 30 year loan. If the higher payment is workable, it will save a ton of interest over time. Read the fine print. Avoid variable rates and balloon payments. Beyond personal residence is income property and in such, the sky is the limit. For example: if the kids are off to college and you help with the rent, why not buy a large home near the school and have them rent out rooms? A valuable lesson in property management is one of many benefits. Homes in these areas are constantly bought and sold as students pass through and there are always renters looking for a room. When graduation finally comes after 10 years, the home can be sold (maybe) for a profit. The one downside to investing in college properties is that college renters tend to be a little rough on the property, so remember the three little pigs and purchase something sturdy. Another way to invest in real estate is the stock market. Specialized mutual funds, ETFs, REITs and others offer a way to benefit from a rising real estate market without having to manage it. Naturally, results will vary and the management still needs to be done, but that’s all factored in and paid for before they produce results. Real estate is a nice addition to any investment portfolio. Because of the complexities of ownership, do not cut corners. Insist on a lease, credit check, and a deposit. Always use professionals. Realtors, tax specialists and attorneys can help prevent headaches down the road. Send questions and comments to: spacecoastmoneytalk@gmail.com. DIAMOND ONE TEAM
Helping Veterans
FIND HOME, SWEET HOME Owning your own home is a huge goal for most Americans. Veterans who have served our nation honorably can get a little assistance through the Veteran’s Administration (VA) home loan program. The program’s main purpose is to help those who have served finance affordable housing. The first step to buying a home through the VA loan program is to connect with a Realtor that is a certified Military Relocation Professional (MRP) and specializes in VA purchases, like myself. VA loans have several advantages for those eligible to use them. Probably the most notable advantage is VA buyers do not require a down payment to purchase a home, unlike conventional loans which require 5% down, or FHA loans which require 3.5% down. Secondly, there is no monthly private mortgage insurance (PMI) required when using a VA loan. Conventional and FHA loans require PMI unless the buyer has 20% or more for a down payment. Another great perk is VA loans often have lower interest rates than conventional or FHA. Finally, VA loans are assumable by qualified buyers, which means a future buyer of your home may be able to take advantage of your great interest rate if interest rates climb. While there are lots of benefits, there are also some misconceptions about VA loans that you should know. A common misconception I’ve seen with first-time home buyers using a VA loan is they believe “no money down” means “no money out-of-pocket”. There are still expenses you will need to have cash for. For instance, you will need money for a good faith deposit; usually about 1% of the purchase price. Additionally, closing costs and pre-paids are an oftenforgotten costs associated with buying a home. You can expect closing costs and pre-paids to be between 3% and 4% of the purchase price, depending on which lender you choose and how much their origination and miscellaneous fees costs. Another expense you should plan for is an inspection. You should be prepared to spend between $300-$500 for the average home inspection, which should include a wind-mitigation certificate, and a wood destroying organism (WDO) inspection. WDO inspections are mandatory for VA loans. Don’t let closing costs scare you out of purchasing a home though, many of our veteran buyers have been able to purchase a home with very little out-of-pocket expenses and some have even received money back at closing by negotiating with the seller. If you are ready to buy your home, do not try to navigate the process on your own, let the Diamond One Team help. After serving 24-years in the Air Force, I retired as a First Sergeant. First Sergeants are in a position of trust for which they are responsible for the morale, welfare, and conduct of their unit. First Sergeants wear a “diamond” insignia on their rank, 10
thebeachsideresident.com F E B R U A R Y 2 0 1 9
which sets them apart from others. The “diamond” in the military has become symbolic for helping service members. Our team, the Diamond One Team, specializes in helping military families buy and sell homes on the Space Coast. Our team’s broker is Britton Group, Inc, in Satellite Beach. The Diamond One Team was Britton Group’s Top Producer for 2018 with nearly $14 Million in sales, through 43 transactions. In just four years, we have helped over 120 military families buy and sell homes throughout Brevard County. Our entire team, which consists of three full-time Realtors, and a transaction coordinator, specialize in VA home purchases. There are a lot of awesome realtors on the Space Coast, but there are none that understand both military families and VA loans better than the Diamond One Team. We take care of all our customers, both military and civilian, like they are family. Visit us online at: www.facebook.com/Diamond1Team or www.diamond1sells.com.

BOOK REVIEWS By Gary Roen
Robert B. Parker’s Blood Feud By Mike Lupica Putnam 9780525535368, $27.00
Robert B. Parker died in 2010. A bit later his estate found new writers to continue the Spenser, Jessie Stone and his western novels but new stories of Sunny Randall were not considered for a while. I am pleased to see that Mike Lupica was hired to continue the tales of Sunny Randall. “Blood Feud”, hopefully, is the first of many more to come. Lupica, who was a personal friend of Robert B. Parker, was a fantastic choice as he has captured the feel of the character and the writing that many of us remember and loved. Randall gets involved after there is an attempt to kill her ex-husband, whom she still loves. The dialogue is snappy, while the story races along to a final satisfying conclusion. Fans can rejoice that Sunny Randall is back in business in “Blood Feud.”
The Toilet Papers Jr.: A Collection of Short Stories Places To Go, While You Go Jaimie Engle JME Books 978099717093, $11.99
What do people who sell real estate do in their spare time between sales? The answer for Jaimie Engle is write and publish another book. This time she is back with a second installment of her popular “Toilet Papers” series of short fiction. This time geared to kids “The Toilet Papers Jr.” has the same elements in writing that made the first collection so popular. Now she turns her attention to many of the pieces of our beloved children’s fairy tales. Many readers will recognize them immediately, but she adds some very interesting twists and turns as well as some very creative ones that are not in that realm, but are absolutely brilliant. I was captivated with one particular story of a roach in the home. “The Toilet Papers Jr.” is entertaining reading for all ages to enjoy.
A Man of Miracles: A True Story of Hope Michael Duffy. JR Published by Hope Publishing 9781732207516, $15.95
“A Man of Miracles” reads like a piece of fiction but is the true story of one man’s journey of life and how he’s escaped death while accomplishing so much for other people. The writing moves along throughout one man’s passage from adolescence to adulthood, with the clearcut image that through faith anyone can succeed whatever they set out to do. “A Man of Miracles” has many positive messages for all of us to follow to get through even the darkest of times. Gary Roen is the author of Journey, Slotski’s World, The Forgotten Father, Look at Me World, and the co-author of Cats, Cats, and More Cats . He can be reached at gsroen@aol.com or his pages on Facebook and LinkedIn. He is also a publishing consultant to authors and publishers in all genres. FEBRUARY 2019

CBD For Your Life HELPS RELIEVE ANXIETY CBD oil can help reduce anxiety symptoms and boost cognition. CBD decreases the physical symptoms of anxiety, such as rapid heartbeat. BOOSTS IMMUNE FUNCTION Cannabidiol oil can help regulate an overactive immune system and improves your natural defenses, potentially leading to lower rates of autoimmune diseases. AIDES IN DIABETES MANAGEMENT Researchers believe this compound inhibits the production of IL-12, a cytokine that contributes to diabetes and other autoimmune disorders. REDUCES PAIN AND INFLAMMATION The cannabinoids in CBD oil influence glycine receptors. CBD stops the body from absorbing anandamide, a compound associated with regulating pain. NEURODEGENERATIVE DISORDERS Cannabidiol oil contains powerful compounds that act as neuroprotectants. The antioxidants in CBD oil have been said to offset the harmful effects of glutamate toxicity and free radicals in the brain. This helps prevent brain damage, memory loss, cerebral ischemia, and cognitive impairment. CLEARS ACNE Rich in anti-inflammatory compounds, CBD reduces swelling and excess sebum production. Plus, the antioxidants in CBD oil kill acne-causing bacteria and protect against oxidative damage. This leads to a clear complexion and younger looking skin.
RESTAURANT OF THE MONTH
La Crepe De France
Who owns this joint? This joint is co-owned by Pierre Esbelin and Gregory Marcot, brothers by marriage, co-owners through sound decision making and a collaborative interest in feeding hungry diners the finest crepes this side of the east coast. What is the address / location? La Crepe De France is located at 707 E New Haven Ave, in the heart of Downtown Melbourne, perched elegantly amidst a small gated courtyard where diners can enjoy outdoor eating while basking in the community atmosphere of Melbourne’s downtown scene. How did you come up with the concept for your restaurant? We are brother-in-laws and we were both business owners in France. Two years ago we decided to start a new adventure and move in Florida with our respective families. We were looking to buy a restaurant with a good development potential, in a popular area, so we bought La Crepe De France.
beers — and of course Mimosas! What would brunch be without a delicious mimosa?
We ran it as it was during the first year to determine what about the restaurant could be improved; both the good and not-so-great aspects. So last year we decided to change things up and turn our concept into a Farmer-chic Breakfast and Lunch restaurant. We now offer new hours (now open 7 days a week: 8am to 2:30pm), new décor, and a newly updated menu featuring not only crepes, but much more.
La Crepe De France and all of its scrumptious offerings is located at 707 E New Haven Ave, Melbourne FL 32901 | lacrepemelbourne.com. Visit them online to map out your next brunch featuring the finest crepes on the Space Coast.
Our focus is more on fresh produce, natural ingredients, and quality food. We make homemade jam without pectin, we also serve all natural meat with no added chemicals or preservatives. Everything is created from scratch and made to your order. Which dish or recipe are you most proud of? We have a lot of good dishes and recipes like the Crepe Tatin Apple or the Salad La Poulette, but one of the dishes we are the most proud of is the French toast. We made it with the exact recipe of my grandmother, with real French bread, my favorite is the Berry French Toast topped with fresh fruits; so good!!! We also offer home brewed teas, cappuccino, macchiato, some good wines and

Which is one of the most popular menu items? Right now one of the most popular item is the brunch plate “Frenchy” (eggs prepared to your liking, a fresh fruit medley, homemade jam, choice of a crepe or French toast and choice of bacon or sausages; also a meatless option with a vegan sausage patties). Tell us what it is about your restaurant that sets you apart from the rest. La Crepe is a lovely spot for Breakfast, Brunch and Lunch where you can find something different in a cozy and casual atmosphere, complete with, of course, the French touch!
RECIPES By Misti Blu Day
@mistibluday
Chia Pudding Recipe Do you have had chia seeds galore but do not know how to use them? Or, maybe you heard they are good for you but not sure why. Chia seeds are high in omega-3s and help naturally keep your blood pressure down, reducing your risk for heart disease. They are also high in fiber, antioxidants, iron and protein. Chia pudding seemed a little intimidating to make at first. While browsing Instagram healthy food porn, I stumbled upon some delicious looking treats with chia pudding, so I thought, why not give it a shot? And dang! It was super simple! I poured two cups of Almond Breeze Unsweetened Vanilla almond milk, 1/2 cup of chia seeds, 2 tablespoons of carob or cacao, 1 teaspoon of
maca root, and I also sprinkled in some flax seed and cinnamon. If you want it to be sweeter you can put some honey in the recipe or even drizzle it on top later. Mix it all together, cover and set in the fridge overnight! I topped mine with raspberries and coconut chips. I am sold! What a great breakfast, snack or dessert that is guilt-free and actually good for you. Best wishes, Misti Blu Day McDermott www.mistibludream.com

LOCAL SCRIBE By Fursey O’Veebee
Grilling, smoking, BBQ: one thing is for certain, cooking outdoors is badass. From the ancient barbacoa to today’s pitmasters and grillmeisters, common knowledge says pretty much everything tastes better cooked on the grill. And I’m not talking an outdoor Martha Stewart oven (A.K.A. propane); I’m not talking a Betty Crocker Easy-Bake grill (A.K.A. pellet smoker); I’m not talking some iPhone app that tells you when your pork butt is done while you are out at Ron Jon buying skinny jeans and rubber scrunchies for your man-bun. I’m talking purely fire, charcoal, and wood. The real deal. Whether you have a hibachi, a barrel smoker, an open pit, or any one of the many types of outdoor cooking instruments, there is no time like the present to fire it up. I have had the pleasure of grilling on all four coasts; from two feet of snow on Lake Erie with snowboard boots on, to the beaches of Southern California right after a good surf, to breaking in a new grill at a hotel on Hatteras Island, to right here in the 321. I’ve seen Steve Raichlen cook lamb on a shovel in a fire pit in New Zealand; I’ve seen Seymour cook his famous chicken on the beach in Grand Cayman in a converted 55 gallon drum; I’ve seen Ahmed Mean make a grill out of cinderblocks on his back porch in VA Beach; I’ve cooked 99-centa-pack hot dogs on the side of a mountain using twigs; I’ve even seen the hardups make a grill out of an old shopping cart. But no matter how much you know, you never stop learning. What do you need to know to impress your friends and do it right?

FIRE IT UP
1. Reverse sear: a newer technique that is opposite of what you always knew. Put that fat steak raw on the cool-side of the grill and shut the lid for 10 minutes. Now open it up, stoke the flame, maybe add some country ham scraps if you got ‘em to get that flame up, and sear that baby on both sides. Let it rest for 5-10 minutes and boom all day. 2. 3-2-1: a simple rib technique. 3- hours on the smoker, 2- hours wrapped in foil, last hour open up the foil on top and add BBQ sauce. Bones will pull out, and the meat will be so tender. Don’t like it too tender? Just do the 3 hour smoke. Hit with BBQ sauce last 5 minutes. Remember indirect heat. And always, ALWAYS remove the membrane on the bottom before you cook ‘em. Slide a butter knife under each bone to loosen then grab the membrane with a paper towel and pull it off. Nobody wants to eat that stuff. If ya wanna get real fancy cut ribs so that each rib has the meat of 3 ribs by cutting just at junction of outer 2 leaving one central bone. 3. Let it rest: most meat does better when you let it sit a while. Wrap a pork butt in foil then a cloth or a towel and let it sit in a clean, dry, empty cooler for a couple of hours. It will keep cooking and the juices will
redistribute giving you the juiciest butt you will find this side of Cheaters. 4. Dry Rub: rub that meat like you love it. Whatever spices you use, they always seem better if rubbed a day or more in advance. 5. Marinades: soak that chicken a few days in a good marinade and you will always score. Make sure you use an acid like wine, vinegar or fruit juice to soften up the meat. Not a whole lot, though. 6. Chimney starter: axe the lighter fluid. Newspaper is free; fluid gets expensive after a while. 7. Spatchcock: use poultry shears to cut out the spine on a whole chicken. Crack the back and lay it open-side-down on the grill. Cooks in less than half the time. If you wanna really be cool grab a big rock or a brick out of your yard, wrap it in foil, and lay it on top of the bird. Forget that chicken-can-butt-stuff. This is way better and faster. 8. Fish: forget cleaning, just filet ‘em off the bone and cook skin-side-down on direct heat. Scrape ‘em at skin level when you flip, saves plenty of time. A little EVOO on top with some rosemary and lime and your favorite seasoning you will be a hit with the Picnic. Table Crew in no time.

Wow! It’s already February! Happy Valentine’s Day to all our peeps from the Famous Cocoa Beach Chickens! Our names are Pikachu (the pretty white hen) and Roxsie (the dashing red hen). We are Bantam Cochin hens that were rescued by our Mom and Dad, Kathy and Robin Turner. When we were about 4 months old, our Mom found us at the feed store in a cage with a lot of other chickens who were bullying us. We were both missing our feathers from our back and bums so we were not so pretty. After about 3 months Mom nursed us back to health and our feathers grew back in. People are always amazed on how fluffy and soft we are! Some of our favorite foods are watermelon, lettuce, corn on the cob and dried mealworms. We also love lizards and bugs, and when we catch one, we do a celebratory dance-run around the back yard. Our Mom even gave us a Krispy Kreme doughnut at Surfing Santa and we got glaze all over our beaks! YUM! Our daily regular food is scratch grains and crumbles mixed with oyster shell and grit. The oyster shell is to harden our egg shells and the grit helps with digesting our food. We also like to take dust baths in the sun as it helps keep us clean. Sometimes Mom gives us a water bath in a bucket with dish soap when we are extra dirty. It happens… The warm water relaxes us and makes us fall asleep.
You might have seen us out and about at Friday Fest, NKF Surf, Surfing Santa, etc… Most days we like to tool around town in the GEM car, checking out the scenery. We live in the backyard during the day and have a 2 story chicken condo for roosting at night where we are protected from our local predators. It’s pretty sweet, as we have fresh water, hay and nesting boxes where we lay our eggs daily. My eggs are white and Roxsie’s eggs are brown. Lucky friends and family will sometimes be the recipient of our tiny eggs. So if you are interested in having female chickens as pets like us, or if you just want to pet a chicken, you can contact my Mom, Kathy, at ChickenPeople@cfl.rr.com. See ya on the other side of the road!

FISHING REPORT @allwateradventures @AllWaterAdventures
OFFSHORE
INSHORE
Wow, 2019 is off to an epic start! This was the best January we have seen in a very long time and I would love to see this action carry into February. Truth be told, February is my least favorite month of the year for fishing, but as I write this report, kingfish up to 55 lb, cobia to 60 lb, wahoo to 80 lb and blackfin tuna to 25 lb have all hit the dock, in addition to several sailfish releases. So, I remain hopeful this February will be one for the record books!
What an incredible month of fishing! We have really been experiencing some changes in the weather the last month or so and it’s really been improving the fishing. With the slightly cooler weather, we have finally got the trout bite to turn on as expected, and it should hopefully do nothing but get better. Large trout, or gator trout as some might call it, have been roaming the flats of the North Indian River and Mosquito Lagoon in every area that has a substantial amount of sea grass. The best way to approach these areas are to slowly push pole and cast artificial baits such as a Gulp shrimp or weedless jerk-bait in pearl white or camo colors. The redfish bite has slowed some but there are still a few hanging around shallow-water sandbar edges; a small piece of cut mullet simply can’t be beat. Anglers looking for a tough battle can find plenty of large black drum on most docks and bridges along the entire Indian River. The best bait for these fish has been half a blue crab, or a dead stinky shrimp! Don’t be scared to leave your bait in the sun for a while to get a little added funk! The black drum do not mind one bit, and often it can get you an extra bite or two at the end of the day. The next month should continue to get better, especially if we see some more cool weather. I really encourage catch and release for future generations; let’s do our part today, for a more plentiful tomorrow.
CAPTAIN ALEX HUGHEY
CAPTAIN GREG RAPP
Historically, we have to work hard for our fish this month, and I typically find myself switching things up a bit from my typical go-to of live bait trolling. Leaving the dock, I arm myself with a five pound box of squid, five pound box of sardines or cigar minnows, a dozen live pinfish or heavy vertical jigs, and a dozen ballyhoo. This ammo will allow me to be ready for any available opportunity that comes my way. I have my sights set on my favorite bottom structures between 160 and 220 feet with a day of chicken-rig fishing in mind. This time of year, you can usually put a great day together with nice vermillion snappers and triggerfish. You will also score the occasional lane snapper, porgy, yellowtail snapper and seabass. You will also catch a lot of red snapper. I am 100% sure you will catch your biggest grouper ever on a chicken rig with a piece of squid because that is just what happens when they are out of season. While bouncing from spot to spot, watch the upper column of your bottom machine. If you get markings 50 feet or more above the structure, there is a good chance you have found amberjack and almaco jacks that are both fun to catch and tasty to eat when properly iced and cleaned. This is when you deploy your live baits or vertical jigs. Most days I find myself sticking to this game plan to provide a lot of action and some good table fare. I always leave an extra 30 minutes, to an hour, on the ride home, just in case I stumble into that line of rays or color change holding cobia. I also like to highspeed troll, on my way out, on those choppy days that slow me down,
Double up on redfish with Captain Alex. or even rig a few ballyhoo with sea witches or islanders and troll out if it is really rough and I have to slow way down. No one is ever disappointed with a bonus wahoo to start off the day. Like I said, “that’s the game plan”, but I am always ready to change it up when better opportunities present themselves. It is very possible for you to find a color change and scattered weed just outside any of the shoals or just inside the reefs and you put a great day together sight-fishing cobia and tripletail. It’s also very possible that you have clean water on the shallower reefs you cross and you see kings skyrocketing, blackfin tuna busting and sails spraying. It is also very possible you cross a hard current edge in 140 to 200 feet and you can pick a nice day of a few mahi, and the occasional wahoo or blackfin tuna and sailfish. Point being, February can and will challenge you. Just make sure you are prepared to seize any opportunity sent your way, and you will have a productive day on the water. Maybe, just maybe , January’s fishing will carry over and we all just cast net pogies, ride to 100 feet and catch giant kingfish, cobia, wahoo, tuna and sailfish; then meet back at the dock and say “easy day kid, easy day.” Captain Greg Rapp All Water Adventures

BARTENDER OF THE MONTH
THIS MONTH’S BARTENDER OF THE MONTH FEATURES “Kippy” FROM GRILLS SEAFOOD DECK & TIKI BAR.
Kippy Makepeace has deserved the esteemed title of “Bartender of the Month” for some time now. Every bartender’s favorite bartender, Kippy is a staple for the Grill’s team and a go-to for many in the industry. We can’t say enough good things about Kippy Makepeace! She is one of the most wellinformed, hard-working and knowledgeable bartenders you will find this side of the mahogany. Kippy has worked for Grills Seafood Deck & Tiki Bar for nearly 20 years now, and she sets the standard! This wonderful human greets everyone with a smile, and warmth, straight from the heart. Ms. Kippy would be impossible not to love. She has an incredible personality and she is, without-adoubt, at the top of her profession; she also makes a mean cocktail. We couldn’t be more thrilled to feature this wonderful liquidizer - It’s long-time overdue. Raise ‘em high, folks. To Kippy Makepeace!
Q A
WHERE ARE YOU FROM, ORIGINALLY?
Q A Q A
HOW LONG HAVE YOU BEEN BARTENDING?
Q A
I am from Minnesota and when I was 12 we moved to Wichita, KS. My parents were in a bad accident that left my dad paralyzed and because of it they got a settlement so we moved to Florida and bought Gatsby’s in December of 1978.
I’ve been bartending since my first year in Florida, so 40 years!! Wow, 40!!
Q A
MOST OVERRATED / UNDERRATED DRINK?
Q A
WHAT IS THE FUNNIEST PICKUP LINE YOU’VE OVERHEARD WHILE ON THE JOB?
WHAT IS YOUR DRINK OF CHOICE? I’m pretty much a beer girl, Bud or Busch with a glass of ice. But I do LOVE tequila and a good Margarita.
CAN YOU RECOMMEND A HANGOVER CURE? Well if you can’t have a good Bloody Mary, (Grills has great Bloody Mary’s!) I wouldvseriously recommend Campbell’s tomato soup; just sip it like a cup of coffee. I swear by this one!
Q A Q A
Most overrated: A gin and tonic. Gin is gross and tonic is yuck! Most underrated: GRILL’S MARGARITA! - 1800, Cointreau, and Grand Marnier. I tell people they’re like boobs, “ones not enough and three is too many!”
Not exactly a pickup line but a guy came up and said he needed a beer because he just threw his away. He said he met up with a girl he’d met online and he looked more like her profile picture than she did. It was funny.
WHICH CLOSING / OPENING DUTIES DO YOU LIKE THE LEAST? Well anyone who knows me knows I LOVE to clean, so pretty much none of it bothers me at all!
FAVORITE PERKS OF BEING BARTENDER? I think my favorite perk (not sure if this is a perk) but just all of our regulars and meeting people from everywhere. Also, seeing my snowbirds come back year after year.

HOW MUCH SEXUAL INNUENDO INCREASES YOUR TIPS?
Q A
WHAT IS NUMBER ONE ON YOUR BUCKET LIST?
Everywhere I can! I like Preacher Bar, Cantina, Fishlips, and Thai Thai’s. I used to work for Outback Steakhouse, so I still LOVE Outback. Pretty much, I’ve never met a bar I didn’t like.
What comes to mind is when I made a Bloody Mary for a server’s boyfriend. She said he had texted her saying it was awful! I thought he was being sarcastic, but then I realized, when I was busy and ran out of well vodka, I substituted it for Smirnoff Vodka (the next step up). Then I realized I had grabbed Smirnoff Strawberry Vodka - EEEK! Not so good in Bloody Mary’s!
At my age, 60, not too much. However, there are still some old farts that LOVE me!
WHAT WOULD YOU ORDER FOR YOUR LAST MEAL? This is easy! Makoto’s Kolomo Fish. Not too many Japanese restaurants I’ve been to have this fish, but it is AMAZING! You should really try it.
Well, I’m really not much of a traveler so I don’t have a bucket list - But everyday I try to have some fun, eat good food, laugh and spend time with my family: my three AMAZING kids: Carly, Blaise and Paris, my granddaughters, and my 18 awesome siblings; plus some good friends. Everyday can be a party, and pretty much it is!
Do you know of a great bartender, or barista, and would like to nominate them for Bartender/Barista of the Month? Email staff@thebeachsideresident.com and tell us all about them.

LOCAL SCRIBE Spring Home Makeover By Misti Blu Day McDermott @mistibluday Throughout our lives, we receive gifts and collect items. Whether it is from a vacation, retail therapy, your birthday or hand-me-downs, we accumulate a lot of stuff! It piles up and consumes our living space each day. Think about your junk drawer or the to-do list pile on your desk, the back of your closet or even your pantry. There is so much that we do not utilize and yet we still continue to shop for useless items. Chances are, 80% of your junk draw is trash or has another place it belongs. If you haven’t been maintaining your clean home groove, your living space may start to feel a little disorderly. A cluttered or chaotic space can cause anxiety. Getting your stuff in order gives you a pleasant feng shui, which is like a positive energy flow. Most of us have a busy life juggling kids, school, a relationship, friends, work or whatever other million things you have on your plate. The last thing you want to do is add cleaning your entire home to the list. Don’t. Do not overwhelm yourself. There is no need to turn your house upside down, lose sleep or forget to shave your left leg because your brain has turned into jello. Relax and watch some Netflix.

CHEFS CORNER
Chef Luis Buxo of
Hemingway’s Tavern
Tell us Chef, who are you and where do you hail from? Chef Luis Buxo from Guaynabo, Puerto Rico.
Where can we find you? Hemingway’s Tavern at 1800 West Hibiscus BLVD, Suite 115 Melbourne, FL 32901 We’ve been open since November 2015 and I started about seven months later.
Tell us a little about your professional background. I’ve been a chef for 30 years, in a number of different restaurants: Lowes for ten years, Wyndham Hotel Grand Bonnet Creek, and making my way through life in a number of different chain stores. I was even a trainer for Outback Steakhouse, Macaroni Grille. A lot of different places.
What inspired the concept for Hemingway’s Tavern? Jimmy Tarasavage, (CHECK NAME) the GM of Hemingway’s Tavern, came up with the concept. They opened and then I started a few months later. He was looking for a way to bring Key West to Melbourne, because every time he would go to Key West it was like a different world down there and he wanted to bring that back home. Earnest Hemingway lived down there and that’s the man who inspired this whole endeavor.
How long has it taken you to perfect the overall vision of the restaurant? “The relentless pursuit of excellence” is my motto. We are constantly changing the menu and making improvements. We’re always looking for new flavors and concepts.
Which dish or recipe are you most proud of? I would say the pork belly flat bread. It comes with a house-made black bean spread, sous vide pork belly with Cuban ranch and a Floribbean slaw. That represents what our restaurant is all about, a fusion of all the places where Hemingway lived. 30
thebeachsideresident.com F E B R U A R Y 2 0 1 9
Tell us what it is about your restaurant that sets you apart from the rest. Our restaurant is like a melting pot of all the places where Hemingway lived, it’s got a Cuban, European and Key West flair, melded all in to one. All of our food is a medley of flavors and textures. All of our food is cooked from the heart. We have a rule here in my kitchen “Don’t put anything in the window you wouldn’t serve your mother”.
What’s your favorite perk of being a chef? I get to be creative, come up with new recipes no one has ever seen or tasted. I get to think outside the box and that’s when the magic happens. Also, I get to eat all day long, and that’s pretty great too.
What would you order for your last meal? I would probably have something that comes from home. I’m from Puerto Rico. So I’m thinking I would have monfongo (mashed plantains and pieces of bacon cooked in garlic oil or bacon fat), or sweet plantains and yucca with a nice churrasco (skirt steak).
Where do you spend your time when you’re not running one of the most interesting restaurants on the Space Coast? Fishing. I love fishing; anywhere I can. I’m the guy with a fishing pole in my car. If I see a body of water, and I’ve got time to spare, I’m fishing. You can find Chef Luis inventing new and delicious recipes at Hemingway’s Tavern, nestled amongst the oak trees draped by Spanish moss, in the Oaks Mall, Melbourne, Florida. Get taken back to the era of the Shenanigans of Hemingway. Experience his favorite foods, his favorite libations; you will feel like you are in Key West back in the 30s. 1800 W Hibiscus Blvd., Melbourne, FL 32901. hemingwaystavern.com

LOCAL SCRIBE VITALISM NEURAL WIFI By Summer Cowhig, Community Herbalist @passiflorareincarnata
When I think of real estate here on the beach, I think about the first beings who called this place home - the plants. The trees who take water for themselves and naturally leave the rest for the others. I think of the indigenous peoples who lived in harmony with their home, using these trees and plants for food, medicine and shelter. When I think about the future of this beautiful barrier island we are all blessed to call home, I think of beach and waterway cleanups, an abundance of wellness workshops, moon gatherings, grief circles, community food forests; the possibilities are endless. I think of our ocean, rivers, waterways and soils restored to purity. Clean, free energy. Front yard medicinal flower gardens, edible backyard landscapes. I think of an environment in which children and adults feel safe and where they can thrive. So, how do we build this community we wish to see? I’ve heard it from many beachside residents, “we want a shift in our neighborhood”. Not the kind of change in development that will gentrify our beautiful homeland and push us deeper into the matrix. I am talking about a supportive, nourishing, sustainable change that will lift you and shift you and every single being around you. It starts with us and the way we operate with each other, the way we treat ourselves. Restoring relationships in our community plays a central part to restoring our own well-being. Now is the time to cultivate self awareness, and practice consciousness. Our behavior influences the emotions, biology and mind-sets not only of ourselves but of all beings around us. Just by adjusting the way we nurture ourselves and the way we nurture
others, even in our conversations, can be a simple, loving, powerful transformation. The consciousness of speaking against yourself or others or acting against yourself or others is only because you are choosing it. Choose to expand your consciousness, lift our community up, tap into your intuition and your ability to perceive information beyond the physical. These are the keys for a true revolution. Don’t hold back and be idle and sedentary anymore. Step into what it means to be true leader. To me, a leader is someone who takes necessary action to start bringing about change through the things that they love. Who do you say you are? What do you say you are? Who are you? What are you capable of doing? All of this can shift if you change the way in which you talk to yourself and to others. Be mindful of what you think and say. The ecology of our life is made up of our inspirations and our accomplishments, who we love and care for, what motivates and engages us, what creates fluidity, what makes us feel at peace. Let us collectively move beyond confusion, step into solution and create life long lasting change for our community! As Beachside is growing and changing, so can we! “The words you speak become the house you live in.” - Hafiz FEBRUARY 2019

Spring Home Makeover By Misti Blu Day McDermott
The plan is to find small projects weekly, monthly, or whatever routine you can handle. I personally love to do these projects on Sundays. I let the sun shine through the windows, play Alabama Shakes on my speakers, light some incense and get to work. I make the process feel therapeutic. I always have a little box tucked away to fill up; my goal is to fill it throughout the month and donate it. I also have the “out of sight, out of mind” mentality of old belongings. Unless they are sentimental or something of use, throw it away or put it in the donate pile. Now, the “does this bring you joy?” question for each item is not always relevant. My hammer doesn’t bring me joy (that would probably be a red flag) but I need it. However, the ugly snowman candy dish from 2011 can probably find a new home. Organizing your items in a way that they can all be seen is brilliant. Marie Kondo’s method uses shoe-

boxes as dividers and folds shirts in a way that you can view them all instead of digging around and unfolding everything by accident to find what you need. Personally, I love using baskets to add another shelf to a surface, such as a desk or end table. You can stack them for more storage space and they are lightweight, inexpensive and easy to change up. While you are decluttering, you can simmer hot water on the stove with orange peels, cinnamon sticks and cloves as a natural way to make your home smell amazing. Now you have learned how to be productive without getting overwhelmed! What home project are you going to do first while you get your dance on? www.mistibludream.com
KEEP FLORIDA WEIRD ONE MAN’S TRASH ANOTHER MAN’S TORTURE
STREETS OF GOLD… OR BROWN? A woman in Englewood, FL who recently bought a new home presumably made all the right moves: along with signing closing papers on her new house, she also filed for a new driver’s license to make it seem more official. Though she did receive a license shipped to her new address, someone, somewhere else, got something terribly wrong as her license address read “Eat Ass St, Englewood, FL”. Upon further research we believe we’ve located the street… a few blocks south of Tramp Stamp Ln.
A group of realtors in Central Florida were dispatched to a house owned by recently deceased occupants. As most of their family lived far away, the house remained full of the departed’s personal effects. The realtors found any and everything one would expect from a home unprepared for discerning visitors: furniture, dishes, clothing, and knots of snake skins in cabinets and attics, you know… THE NORM! It is safe to say the gaggle of professionals walked the remainder of the house in a large pack - every angle covered!
NO MORE NOSE HAIRS THE HAND THAT FEEDS YOU A realtor in Naples, FL received a phone call in regards to an early lease break. Two tenants were reported to have gotten into a squabble over who had rights to a shared pet pup when things got heated. It turns out someone was one was viciously bitten during the disagreement! A pragmatic person would discern this as a clear answer as towho should have dominion of their beloved furball; most dogs wouldn’t bite their favorite human. Alas, this was not the case, for the bite… was human.
THE EARLY BIRD GETS THE WORM.
A realtor in Jacksonville FL, called for an expert to come inspect a house for sale, fearing there may be an intrusion of mold in some of the rooms. The inspector arrived as she was on the phone and pointed towards the direction of the problem. As she walked towards him down the hallway, he began his rant, declaring, “Whatever that terrible stench is, is much more than a mold problem!” To which the realtor softly replied, “I’m so sorry, that was me.” Never trust a fart.

ALBUM REVIEWS
JEREMIAH JOHNSON
Reviews by Fursey O'veebee.
MIKE ZITO
STRAIGHTJACKET This CD jumps right out at you from the opening cut as Blues Guitar master Jeremiah Johnson lays some heavy riffs on you in “Straightjacket”, accompanied by some nice horns and lyrics proclaiming to his woman she doesn’t have to strangle him with possessiveness. JJ has a nice blend of Blues, Country, and Southern Rock in his armamentarium and he mixes it up on this CD. Jeremiah himself proclaims “I want people to let this record play from the first to the last note, crank it up at a party or riding through the night on a HarleyDavidson. I want it to make people feel like going on a trip of emotion”. This is evident as this CD plays like a well-written story from beginning to end. He rocks on in “Getting tired”, saying he is getting tired of getting old, but getting old getting tired. After a hard week of work, we all know that feeling. Slowing it up on “Blood of the Blues”, he does a mellow rocking groove. Considering that this record was produced by the legendary Mike Zito, it is no surprise that it rocks hard from start to finish. He gets a little patriotic in “Believe in America”, which is a song that no matter what side of the Eagle you are on (left-wing or rightwing), you can stand up and be proud of your country regardless of its faults. “Dirty Mind” is a jam about his woman, and starts out slow but gets faster with some nice guitar and horn work. Many great cuts on this CD, I would highly recommend it. thejeremiahjohnsonband.com
BLUE ROOM 2018 REMASTER
JJ APPLETON AND THE KENTUCKY JASON RICCI HEADHUNTERS LIVE AT THE RAMBLIN’ BEAUTIFUL SLOP MAN FAIR
This CD was originally released 20 years ago, and honestly it blows away 99% of the stuff I hear. Thankfully I had never heard this CD before so it was all new to me. Remastered for its 20 year anniversary, this CD is pure fire. Mike Zito rips the neck off of the guitar with incredible prowess, from the opening track “Hollywood” to the final cover of “Rocket Man” which I find better than the original. Some of the cuts on here are, how should we say, a bit risqué, such as “Lovering”, but if that is ok with you then this CD will be your top purchase in a long time. In “It’s All Good” he throws down some more blistering guitar licks and gets funky with it at the same time. Guitar solo after guitar solo on this CD just keep on pushing the limits of modern guitar mastery, which again make it hard to believe it is 20 years old. This axe-man makes you feel like he is effortlessly throwing down licks in some back room in a smoky juke joint with a bunch of cool cats sitting around smoking cigs and drinking whisky. “Gravy Jam” is another one of many that just keeps on ripping. This would be a great CD to play when you are going just slightly above the speed limit down A1A to Sebastien for a Dawn Patrol sesh. I guarantee you it would be hard to keep your foot off of the gas. So speed on up to the record store and grab this barn burner. You will be glad you did. mikezito.com
Now we move on to the other side of the coin. Whereas some LPs jump out and smack you in the face from the opening cut, this one I had to listen to a few times to wrap my head around. Appleton and Ricci have been playing for a while both separate and together, and they both have established for themselves quite a resume in the genre. This CD leans very hard to the country blues edge, as Ricci’s harmonica backs up Appleton’s guitar and vocals. Mostly slow and twangy, after a few times this baby starts to grow on you. The cover artwork, as you can see, is also very interesting. Many times I will pick a CD based entirely on cover art, and usually I am not disappointed. They start tapping into some zydeco style in the instrumental “Geaux Nuts Kids”, which really gets my blood pumping and has me ready to go back to Big Mamou. Break out the Jambalaya next because the opener for “Don’t Badger the Witness” will have you putting on your best Cajun accent and hungry for a bowl of stew. Excellent finger-plucking in this song keeps a slow tempo to go along with the gravelly vocals. Some more great harp playing from Ricci in “Safety Zone”, as Appleton says that all of his friends have forsaken him, and caused him to weep and moan. So skateboard down to the CD shop and get this fingerpopper so all of your friends won’t forsake you. deviousplanet.com/AppletonRicci.php
Then there is this. Stop reading now and go buy it. Wow. Big props to my new hookup Marc Lipkin at Alligator Records for turning me on to this just released masterpiece. This is Some pure-T Southern Rock Blues, Kinda Skynyrd, Kinda Hank Jr., Kinda Allman Brothers…and I mean bruh if that don’t sound like you then stop reading now. These boys rip some hard guitar jams, good drums, and good vocal, from the start to the finish. Not one bad song on this CD. This is the kind of CD you crank up full volume and play air guitar while you pretend to know the words. “Big Boss Man” starts it off, and no it’s not about the WWF legend, but it does rock in a legendary style. “Shufflin’ Down to Memphis” belts out some nice slower guitar licks for the live crowd. Guitarist and Vocalist Richard Young proudly states “The Kentucky Headhunters are and always will be in love with playing live. It’s our lifeblood.” This is clearly evident on this CD as they give the people what they want. Their fluid congruity is a result of playing and recording music together anywhere from 30 to 50 years depending on the source. They do a nice take on Freddy King’s 1961 classic “Have You Ever Loved a Woman”, that would please even the harshest Blues critic. “Wishing Well” is another ripper. Hell all the songs on this CD are rippers, who am I kidding. “Walking With The Wolf” is another great jam that will get your toes tapping and your head bobbin’. In “Daddy Was a Milkman” he tells the tale of another infamous backdoor man, who just so happened to be his dad. Men, this is another example of why you should buy your dairy products at Publix yourself, and opt out of delivery.A+ on this release. No question about it. So when the old cat at the bar yells “Play Some Skinnerd Man!” put a quarter in the juke, and play this CD start to finish. You will make a new best friend. kentuckyheadhunters.com
