Editor’s Note Just as I predicted last month, change is upon us, beginning with Daylight Savings Time. On March 10th the clocks roll forward offering us one more glorious hour of sunshine. You’ll never hear me complain (too much) about the Florida weather. I’m solar-powered, baby. The sunlight reminds me there’s work to do and friends to mingle with. The streets are coming alive and boy have we got some fun cooking up! Did you know March 4th is Hug a GI Day? The women and men of our armed forces deserve our appreciation as they perform an invaluable service to our country. They risk and dedicate their lives for our safety and freedom. A simple hug is a small thanks to the vital service they provide. We don’t know who the creator is, or the origin of this day, but I’ll bet it was a GI and I’d live to give them a hug. March brings with it an interesting political movement, like Cocoa Beach Mayor Ben Malik’s proposal to decriminalize marijuana. Listen, we all know it’s a polarizing topic - the devil’s lettuce is a subject no stranger to controversy. Good. Bring it. There’s much to be understood on the topic and the more people speak on it, the more research will be conducted. On that note, the proposal passed its first round. Should the second round pass, what will that mean for Cocoa Beach residents? Possession of 20 grams or less of cannabis and/or possession of drug paraphernalia will result in a citation rather than an arrest. According to Florida statute, both are first-degree misdemeanors, punishable by up to a year in jail and a $1,000 fine. Malik believes the opioid epidemic is far more concerning than that of marijuana. We asked residents their thoughts on the matter and there’s a clear delineation of stance on the matter. Do your research and ask questions. The whole country is talking about it and it’s not going away. The evidence of the healing qualities this herb is bringing to those who suffer from cancer, seizures and other chronic illnesses is undeniable. I hope we can all find an agreeable understanding and make it work for those who truly need it. I don’t know about you, but I’d rather suffer from the munchies than a hangover when trying to self-medicate from a hard day at the office. We hope to see you all at the 55th Annual Easter Surf Contest. There’s going to be a killer showcase of talented surfers, exhibitions and water sports. We expect a healthy does of celebrities and there’ll be plenty to do for the whole family to enjoy. Don’t miss the Easter egg hunt on Sunday. Vendors and sponsors will stuff the Easter Bunny’s eggs with more than just candy - I suspect adults will want to join in on the fun! For more on the contest and events, read the magazine. It’s all in there. We’ll see you guys there! Please enjoy the publication - we worked hard on it for you! Sincerely,

Sharon Lacy Editor-in-Chief

MONEYTALK By Steve Hauser

I hate tax season, but it’s here, so let’s cover some tax issues. First and foremost, consult with a tax specialist to save headaches in the future. The laws constantly change and you never know what you don’t know. At age 59 1/2, we can begin taking distributions from our IRAs without penalty. The general idea is to not draw money out but rather leave it invested to grow. When you do take money out, you will be taxed at your current tax rate. If you take it out before 59 1/2, there’s a 10% penalty, so unless it’s an emergency, don’t do it. At age 70 1/2, we’re required to begin taking distributions. The annual amount is based on age and size of the account. Most brokerage firms calculate this automatically and it should be posted on their website. It’s commonly referred to as RMD (required minimum distribution). Roth IRAs have already been taxed. There are rules and timelines but when you take a distribution, it should be tax free. Inheriting an IRA requires extra care. If the IRA came from your spouse, you can simply take the account assets right into your own and the distribution ages listed above will apply. If the IRA is from anyone other than a spouse, it should be transferred into an Inherited IRA and kept separate from other accounts. Regardless of age, the IRS wants distributions to begin soon. Get help with this as there are different ways to play. Beyond IRAs we have taxable brokerage accounts. The big taxable issues are interest, dividends and capital gains. For the capital gains, simply find the difference of the price paid and the price sold. Again, most brokerage firms will have this information and provide it to you on a form called a 1099. If an investment is inherited the original cost is hardly ever found so look into something called Step-Up cost basis. It will save you money. Last word on taxable accounts. Avoid buying mutual funds towards the end of the year. Research ‘dividend selling’ if you need to know why. Send questions and comments to: spacecoastmoneytalk@gmail. com. A Field Guide to Spring Break:

Cocoa Beach

By Dan Reiter

Originally published in The Beachside Resident, but it was so good we had to bring it back again. Each spring, legions of colorful and exotic species descend upon the beaches of Central Florida to bathe in the warming waves, consume massive quantities of beer, and commence in their yearly mating rituals. This guide will help the naturalist identify various migratory species of Cocoa Beach and surrounding areas during the Spring Break season. The Day Tripper (Barbaro Orange Countius) Easily the most abundant of all non-local species, the Day Tripper is ubiquitous in the region throughout the year, but their population balloons during the month of March, consuming whole swaths of coastline. Their vehicles are conspicuous with their polished rims, heavy bass thrums, and baubles dangling from the rear-view mirrors. Males are best viewed from afar, as they will exhibit aggressive behavior towards humans and automobiles while attempting to cross the road, especially while in the thralls of mating. Females are typically ornamented with tattoos on the lower backs, or (in the more dangerous varietals) on the necks or behind the ears. Males mark their territory by urinating on buildings or sidewalks, and are distinguishable by their sneering lips and the trail of litter which accumulates in their wake. Owing to the proximity of their own nests, Day Trippers subsist on a scant diet of cheap beer and cigarettes while beachside. Natural habitat: Minutemen Causeway, The Pier. The Disney Spillover (Familius Cluelessicae) Disney Spillovers hail from as far north as Canada and as far west as Kansas. They travel en masse, and are brightly plumed with decorative T-shirts, camera straps, umbrellas, and plastic Ron Jon bags. Be sure to observe slow speed zones at Spillover crossings, as they tend to be discombobulated, and their young attracted to fast-moving vehicles. Mothers usually carry their babies in one arm with the other hand extended behind them, as if seeking out a wayward child. Dazed, agitated, easily burned, the Spillover gravitates toward major intersections. Best viewing spot: corner of 520 and A1A. The Snowbird (Retirus Traffictera) The Snowbird hails from Ohio, Illinois, Michigan, Pennsylvania, and the Great Plains. A roaming species, they travel by RV, van, bicycle, or on foot. Distinctive features include a bluish tint to the head feathers, high, pressed shorts, Panama hats, and wire-rimmed glasses. They travel in pairs and are mostly harmless, except when behind the wheel of a car, when they become the deadliest of all migratory species. They are known to drive against traffic on one-way roads, make slow, sweeping right turns from left lanes, and stick their tails perilously out from medians. Habitat: remote beaches, restaurants, Kennedy Space Center, condo units, local hospitals. 10

thebeachsideresident.com M A R C H 2 0 1 9

The Kook (Flailos Kookaburra) The Common Kook bears some resemblance to the local surfer, but is easily recognized by his Volcom stickers, the surfboards strapped backwards or sideways to his car, and the beer cooler rolling behind him as he roams toward the beach. Unlike the local fauna, the Kook will regularly despoil the dune ecosystem, leave waste in parking lots, and give the “stinkeye” to other surfers. Another feature is a milky coloration to the skin. Kooks are generally drawn toward crowded breaks, i.e. the Pier and 2nd Light. When there are waves, Kooks can be seen sitting on crossovers in their neon green tanktops, or struggling in the breakwaters on a pop-out board far too small for their skill level. The German Tourist (Eccentricus Deutchlandia) Renowned for their tall, lithe figures, pointed snouts, Speedos, swimming goggles, and reflective white skin (which protects them by blinding potential predators), German Tourists speak in high, garbled voices, and sport a distinctively bizarre swimming ritual, in which they warm up by flapping the arms, then proceed to drown themselves in the shorepound. The New Jerseyite (Snookius Spraytanua) More widespread in Pensacola and Daytona Beach, stray groups of New Jerseyites can sometimes drift as far south as Cocoa Beach. The male’s head is uncommonly spiked and gelled, even at the back of the skull. After a 12-pack, his chest will puff out, and he will put on a preening spectacle, barking and prancing. Females are expressive, habitually pugnacious, and are usually considered more dangerous than the males. Best viewing time is early in the day, when New Jerseyites are at their most tranquil. At sunset, they will move inland from the coast, seeking out the revelry and mating havens of the Inner Room or Cheater’s. The Homeless Salt (Griftae Spareaquarterum) The migratory Homeless Salt is virtually indistinguishable from the local breed — both are characterized by a reddish color, lack of teeth, heavy beards, lesions, and long, matted hair. The Salt will curl up if threatened, and presents no danger to the casual onlooker. He is the only species not to shed his heavy coat in the warmth of spring. Habitat: the Salt exists at the fringes of major Spring Break hubs, and can also be found enjoying coffee at the local Publix. Continued on Page 17

Surf 4th Street South or if the waves suck then kayak around the thousand islands. Also can’t beat a yoga class and Cafe Surfinista for an açaí bowl after!

Zareh Hadden

I work front desk at the La Quinta Oceanfront. I recommend all our guests check out the Pier, stop at Ron Jon’s and the aquarium in the CB Surf Co., I send them to Downtown Cocoa Beach to walk around and check out the shops, bars and restaurants. I tell guests to enjoy the sunset at Squidlips. I recommend eating at the Port and watching the ships sail. I always suggest a kayak or pontoon tour on the beautiful Intercostal and of course, KSC.

Robin Chichester

I’d start off at the Port and end at the Inlet.

YOU’VE BEEN APPOINTED THE OFFICIAL BEACHSIDE TOUR GUIDE OF THE DAY.

Where are you taking your people?

Tracy Abbott

I would probably start with a walk on the beach. Non-locals love Coconuts, and that whole street has lots to offer, so we’d probably walk around and check out the shops while there. At night we would have to pop into Hunker Down, Coconuts, Beach Shack & Thirsty Oyster to see what live bands are playing in the area. Perhaps Juice & Java, and maybe even Heidi’s. Friday Fest is always a hit.

Peacock peeping, cruise ship departure at the Port, Coconuts or Squidlips. Cocoa Beach for lunch on the water. Ride by the Pier, key lime pie at the FL Key Lime Pie Co. and breeze through Ron Jon’s and the Shark Pit after that.

I’d give them a few pointers, like take A1A up North passed Cocoa and send them on their way. They are welcome to call me if they get lost, but they have phones so I don’t see why that would be necessary.

A Field Guide to Spring Break Cocoa Beach The Hot Mess (Drunkus Bikinae)

The Hot Mess appears only in the evening, stumbling along back alleys, or flopping repeatedly onto sidewalks. She is a rare, solitary bird who scorns the need for clothing, and is usually spotted in random stages of undress. Her mating call varies, but might resemble the caterwaul of a coyote. Tattoos typically stripe the lower back or ankles. Approaching a Hot Mess is inadvisable, as her presence can attract hordes of mating Day Trippers, Kooks, and Frat Boys. Proximity can lead to serious injury or even death. Natural habitat: Coconut’s, The Pier. The Brooklyner (J. Lovium Bootilicious) Brooklyners travel in familial flocks. Males are recognizable by their glistening faux diamond studs, silver neck-chains, sneakers, and white socks pulled up to mid-calf. Females are typically robust and energetic, with a rhythmic mating dance typified by raised elbows, outthrust rear, and legs bent out wide. They are for the most part amiable creatures and tend to keep in tight packs, with the males engrossed in their smartphones. Habitat: The Pier, Minutemen, Patrick Air Force Base beaches.

FILM REVIEWS EOS by Director Bruce Muller Co-Authored by Jessica Stern & Sharon Lacy @jessbunz

@lime_and_a_coconut

Eos. The Goddess of Dawn. Would it have been serendipitous to name a brilliant short movie featuring famed surfer Kassia Meador by any other name? Bruce Muller, Director/Writer/Creator and a not-so-long-ago resident of Cocoa Beach, debuted his artistry with an evoking, primal, and visceral surf film that is just plain SEXY. The film showcases Kassia Meador, an iconic female professional longboarder, ex Roxy Ambassador, and wetsuit company entrepreneur for the Kassia Surf company, in her element, dancing through the waves, making a surfer’s connection to the ocean tangible to all who attended this showing at the Surfside Playhouse. Muller’s use of light, landscape, and sound creates a foundation that connects us all to the earth. Meador’s presence in the film is powerful and feminine as she appears as a metaphorical representation of all of us working through triumphs and tribulations of life.

The Frat Boy/ Sorority Girl (Frattus Juvenalium) A distant relative of the Day Tripper, this species differentiates itself from the Barbaro Orange Countius in its more muscular physique, attentive grooming habits (the males often have shaved chests), and paucity of tattoos. They travel with a bevy of coolers, footballs, boomboxes, and beach chairs. While lively and courteous in the morning, after drinking alcohol the males transform into the most malignant of all beach species. Warning signs of such a transformation include a dulling of the eye sockets and a loose swagger, accompanied by a hanging of the hands. Natural habitat: The Pier, Minutemen Causeway. The Lurker (Sketchus Pervops) Wiry, with a shuffling gait, tattooed neck, long jean shorts, and a wedge-shaped head, the lurker is a peculiar creature whose habits are mostly unknown. He has never been seen without a cigarette in his mouth or behind one ear. His sneakers are suspiciously new and white. It is advisable to keep a safe distance. Lurkers are known to perch on the dune crossovers for hours at a time, casting malicious glances at parked cars. The Adventurer (Visitorium Respectus) The most uncommon bird of all, the Adventurer will do its best to blend in with the laid-back, friendly atmosphere of the seaside town. This camouflaging technique allows it to enjoy Spring Break at the proper speed, free of distress or misfortune. Habitat: varies, but might be seen paddleboarding on the river, lounging at the most serene beaches, or at the local haunts, including, but not limited to: The Green Room, Surfinista, The Fat Snook, Juice & Java, Heidi’s, Quiet Flight, Neilson’s, Fat Kahuna’s, and The Mango Tree.

When we interviewed Muller we inquired of the various locations where the film was shot. We were told the principal locations included: Pacific Ocean and the Anza Borrego Desert of California. Also, the forests of Big Sur., California. For the underwater scenes, the Maldives. The land-based scenes included the interiors of New York City, San Diego and Downtown L.A. Simply put, incredible backdrop visuals for the films narrative. Director Muller’s film explores existential metaphors by paying homage to ancient eastern philosophies, mirrored by the masterful surfing Kassia Meador. Haunting visuals of Kassia’s face marked with inscriptions invoke lasting impressions long after the film closes. We were told the inscriptions were Kanji calligraphy (facial painting) “tattoos”. Muller says, “I wrote a poem, an archive that was transcribed onto her face, neck and arms. It is essentially the archive of her temporal existence. The Shadow Self…” If you missed the opportunity to see the film, it may be some time before you have the chance again as Muller’s film is coursing the international film festival circuit right now, so we won’t have it available until it goes around the world for a while. However, let’s be clear, it’s a must see. Great talent has come from our small town and Bruce Muller can be counted as one. We would like to thank Bruce Muller, the Surfrider Foundation and the Cocoa Beach Playhouse for the opportunity to experience this incredible film. The memory of its imagery lingers still.

RESTAURANT

OF THE MONTH Q & A:

The Green Turtle

Culinary innovation and premier service has been the cornerstone of this locally owned and operated business since its foundation in 2000 by Proprietor Tim Dwight and Partner/Executive Chef Ercan Ekinci. We at Beachside Media are proud to announce the good people of The Green Turtle will also be partnering with us for this year’s Easter Egg Hunt, April 21st, at Lori Wilson Park. Participants can expect to discover, in their search, a variety of treats and gift certificates stuffed into each and every candy-colored egg. More details to come. Meanwhile…

AN INTERVIEW WITH ESTEEMED CHEF ERCAN EKINCI How did you come up with the concept for your restaurant/gourmet deli? Going back about 19 years ago, we wanted to put something together such as a nice local gourmet store that offered local seafood, artisan meats, boutique wines, and an upscale deli with an environment that people can come together in to find a high quality product that is well displayed, presented, and well prepared. We wanted to join with local vendors to get locally sourced products that give our place a sense of networking right here in Brevard County. We outsource many of our products right in our area, from smoke houses, to fresh seafood, to sauces and dips. For instance, Mangrove Island is a local business that started off as one item and grew into multiple product lines. Many of which we still use today. The products we use are what helps makes us so unique and special. We take pride in our jobs and our sommeliers spend all day trying to select only the finest wines from around the world: from Chile to California, from Argentina to old world wines from Spain and Italy. We also select many handcrafted cheeses from around the world to compliment our cuisine. For instance, we are suppliers of Cypress Grove, which is a unique vendor that brings only the best in domestic and imported cheeses to compliment our menus perfectly. We also work with our various farmers to receive our fresh meat products. Deep roots farms and Piedmontese produce all grass fed hormone, antibiotic free beef that we sell in our market and use in our café. Brasstown beef is another company used in our restaurant from the Blue Ridge Mountains that creates distinction in what we serve. We are always in search of what is new, exciting, and healthy and we try to bring the best out of those combinations to the table. We try to support those who have supported us for the last 19 years while always welcoming the newest products and trends. We never stop searching for the latest and greatest to constantly keep improving our tastes and quality while keeping our customers excited and happy. We have lots of new plans for this year to constantly improve on what we have to offer here. One plan we are excited about is expanding our organic produce line, our organic grocery items, and possibly introducing a selection of dry aged meats.

I listen to the customers’ feedback

as well and as a good businessman, I will always be open to new ideas to help expand and improve what we do.We have a huge basis of followers all the way up in Titusville, to way down in Vero Beach; people know the green turtle brand. What inspired you to open up a restaurant/ gourmet deli? As a young chef I was always thinking of colorful foods and exotic flavor combinations, and now, 19 years later, this is still one of my driving forces. I have always loved food. It always has been and remains my passion today. They say if you love what you do you don’t have to truly work one day in your life because you love every aspect of your job. This is my calling and I do love every aspect of this business, from my restaurant to my kitchen, from my catering, to my retail. We roughly prepare about 250,000 meals a year and it’s not a small operation. There are so many key factors involved in making this just right. We can be in four different places in one night and have the same quality and satisfaction no matter what type of execution is necessary. This only inspires me to go further and do more with this business.account as well; from ordering to budgeting, from personalizing orders for our clients to delivering and serving our cuisine on site. SWEET THAI CHILI BASIL TACOS What you will need: • Your choice of protein (chicken, shrimp, tofu or veggies) • Corn tortillas • Sweet Thai chili sauce • Gluten-free soy sauce • Turmeric • Cashews • Fresh basil • Onion powder • Garlic powder • Honey (or maple if vegan) • Asian slaw mix • Sriracha • Ginger Directions Sauté your choice of protein. I chose a vegan chicken substitute. Add turmeric, onion and garlic powder, and gluten-free soy sauce in the pan, cooking on medium heat. In a separate pan, lightly toast your cashews. Put the toasted cashews aside and use the same pan to heat your tortillas. When your protein is cooked, deglaze the pan with Thai chili sauce. Asian Slaw You can use an asian slaw pre-mixed bag or make your own. I usually get the pre-made bags from the store and throw away the sauce. The sauces are loaded with corn syrup and I prefer my homemade spin. For my sauce, I mix a little ribbon of Sriracha, equal parts of honey or maple syrup, glutenfree soy sauce and a pinch of ginger. Mix everything together and set aside. Putting it all together First, place your warm tortillas on your plate or in a taco stand, and partially fill with your protein of choice. Top with asian slaw, toasted cashews and fresh basil. Recommended sides I love either jasmine rice, quinoa and kale, or fried rice, topped with black beans. I also enjoy serving mini vegetable spring rolls as a side. This dish is Mexican-Thai fusion so it is fun to get creative and blend two different cuisine styles into one delicious dish. Have fun and enjoy! Best wishes, Misti Blu Day McDermott www.mistibludream.com

RESIDENT OF THE MONTH

Peter Cranis

Selected as the NEW Brevard Tourism Development Office Director, Peter Cranis carved out a few moments from his busy schedule to answer some of our “hard-hitting” questions and we couldn’t be more thrilled for the opportunity. To begin with, please give us some background on your personal life. My parents decided to move to Brevard from Connecticut in 1977, I went to Eau Gallie and then went on to Brevard Comm College. I moved to Orlando to go to the University of Central Florida and got a Bachelors and Masters in Communications. My very first job was a tourism job in Orlando. I worked for Telecom as well as the banking industry, but I always missed working in tourism. I had an opportunity with AAA and had the chance to be the Director of Marketing & Communications. That got me back into the tourism world. From there I went to the VISIT ORLANDO office. I was responsible for promoting tourism and business travel. I was there for 16 years as VP of Consumer Marketing where I led marketing and advertising all over the world, in 8 different countries; it was the highlight of my career. Some things changed, and I had the opportunity to move to Sarasota. I heard about the position opening up at the Travel Office on the Space Coast, it was a perfect opportunity to come back home and promote what I love to do. I’m passionate about it and and I love Brevard and I’m very excited to be back. What inspired you to do the work you do? After I had my first exposure to the world of tourism in Orlando, where there’s always a lot going on, I realized the industry as a whole is a great business to be in and, after working for a company that did business worldwide, it’s where I wanted to be for the rest of my life. That was my calling. Having been a resident earlier in my life, and then later on seeing the growth, Brevard is a very inspiring tourist destination because of everything that’s going on here. What’s interesting, and even exciting about it, is the combination of all the Space Coasts industries working hand-in-hand for the greater good of the community and those who come to visit; it’s something you don’t see in a lot of destinations. I have traveled and lived in Florida for over 40 years, I’ve been to many different beaches, but nobody else has the natural resources, space and technology programs, in addition to a plethora of different businesses that we have here and that in itself is very inspiring. What do you like about the beach side lifestyle specifically. I lived in Connecticut for a good portion of my childhood, but when I moved to Florida there was nothing like what the Space Coast had. It’s just an amazing place. The sun, the sea, the landscape; it’s all just very, very special and I fell in love. I played a lot of tennis growing up and so having the sunshine over 300 days a year, always being able to go outside, was a great thing. Being from Cape Canaveral I got to do a lot: Jetty Park, watch the cruise ships from the Port, we had also lived on the 5th floor in a condo so I got to watch rocket launches from my balcony. So many things that were special to me, and though I won’t be living right on the beach this time around, my wife and I will absolutely enjoy all those things and more. Having lived in Orlando, I realized the beach life has its own personality; the simple fact of being able to walk to the beach and watch the sunrise or sit by the river watching birds fly over as the sun was setting, was missing from my life. It soothes the soul and I love it. What is one thing you hope to achieve when you begin in your position? Whenever you start a new role, especially something as significant as this, I want to spend a lot of time learning and listening and really trying to understand where we currently are from different aspects. But my biggest hope is really to build on the success of my predecessors, working with both political and tourism leaders, and all the great people in the community. This is not a job that you do on your own, or by yourself. You have to work with people and develop a lot of synergies and relationships, and that’s definitely a big goal of mine. I’m looking forward to working with as many people as possible, listening to their ideas, all for a common cause, which is to build the tourism business and provide for the Space Coast. Doing so will have a positive impact on the community and the people that live here by creating jobs that create business opportunities and will create more tourism development tax. I know one big project here is related to the Indian River Lagoon, obviously there’s some legislated collection of money to help refurbish it but there’s also tourist development tax being spent on various projects as well. It’s exciting to me to see that the work that we’re doing is actually turning around and being reinvested into the community to help everyone. So it will help.

Certainly it will help tourism, but more importantly, it’s going to help the residents as well. In Relation to the discussion of the health of our local environment, which are protected and important to us, we’d like to know if you have any plans for Lori Wilson park in Cocoa Beach? I am aware that one of the projects on our list is Lori Wilson Park, and I plan to get up to speed on the needs of the park very quickly and look into what kind of financial resources we have allocated. I grew up with that park and I have a personal and emotional attachment to it. I’ve surfed, swam, and enjoyed its grounds for many years, so I want to make it a great place for visitors and residents alike. We don’t necessarily want to rush anything and make sure we have the right people and experts along side to ensure we take every aspect into consideration, and ensure that wildlife is not impacted by anything we do. Preserving and keeping nature safe is a big factor and something we will always have in mind. I believe as more people come to appreciate natural beauty, more people will have an interest in that side of things as well and making sure that we do all the projects that we can for the Indian River Lagoon, Lori Wilson Park, and for the community nourishment, helps ensure those little pieces of paradise continue to exist. Where do you see the future of the Space Coast going in 2019? I believe the future of tourism, for everyone along the Space Coast, is extremely bright. If it is managed properly, it will be here for generations to come. I’ve had many talks with people, in and out of Brevard, and as more and more people discover us, they will only continue to come back with their children, family and friends, and their children will do the same. I see growth already, and though the economy may go up and down, it’s just the natural cycle of things. But even with that, people still want vacations, there will always be a role for the tourism industry and I’m so blessed and excited to be a part of that. The nice thing about tourists, and one of the things i really love about the industry, is people come and experience the destination. They spend their money and help businesses thrive, and then they leave. They go back to their own home and tell all of their friends and family about what a great time they had. We’re very lucky in the whole state of Florida, tourism is such a big driver of the economy. I think that it’s important to keep that in perspective and understand there’s ways to do things properly. You just have to manage the growth in a way that makes sense. I think the tourism and political leaders, and Brevard as a whole, see that. We are a community and I believe everyone has the best interest of the community at heart. What do you like to do in your spare time? My wife and I will be very excited to get back to the beach. We’re going to be “local tourists”, so we’re going to be able to experience all the wonderful things that we love doing. Whether it be the food, the attractions, the nature; when we get settled, we’re just going to immerse ourselves in everything that the Space Coast has to offer. That’s really what we plan to do with our spare time. Amazing restaurants, events and festivals, concerts, arts and cultural activities; there’s no shortage of things to enjoy. Do you have any closing words? I have two things I want to say to the residents of the Space Coast. One is please feel free to come by. Tourists stop in and say hi to our little visitor areas often. They pick up brochures and come in to see what we have to offer. Just because you’re a local doesn’t mean you’re not welcome. My attitude towards life has always been “great ideas can come from anywhere”. If anybody wants to come in and they’ve got some thoughts about ways to promote tourism and more to market the Space Coast, we’re all ears. The second thing is for those residents who read your publication, who are a part of the tourism industry, I want to thank them for all they do and remind them that they are our great brand ambassadors. What I mean by that is they’re the ones that are actually talking to the tourists at the front line; the servers, the people at the front desk, the people that work in the attractions; they’re the ones that come into contact with the visitors, and they remember the way they’re treated by those team members. They remember the smile, the nod, the kind person helping them and guiding them on where to go. That’s the lifeblood of the tourism business. I know many of them read your publication and I think that’s great, because they need to know what’s going on so they can help people when they come into town and want to know what they should do or what they should see. They’re the boots on the ground, if you will. They’re very critical to our industry and making sure that people come back. So thank you for all you do.

Kathy “Gidget” Kohner-Zuckerman Kathy “Gidget” Kohner-Zuckerman is truly one of the first icons in all of surfing history, and let us tell you why. From the moment her body met the board, she brought “STOKE” to the ocean. She was always so pumped, being a surfer girl in Malibu; she drove everyone totally crazy with her love for the sport. Her passion for paddling out and catching Malibu’s unforgiving and unbiased waves - even when no other surfer would - made her a true legend of the sport. Whether it was Miki Dora, Mickey Munoz, Terry “Tube Steak” Tracy, or Johnny Fain, all champions in the surf world, Gidget matched not only their passion but their personality both in and out of the water... and ladies and gentleman, the rest was history. Her father, Fred, was not only impressed but inspired by his daughters love, excitement, dedication, and passion for the beach and all the waves one woman could catch that he wrote several articles that later turned to books (with over 500,000 copies sold in over 4 languages). Those books turned to screenplays and lastly to a movie. The sport of surfing grew from the mid 50’s to a surf boom in the 60’s, when that little girl “Gidget” from the West Coast turned everyone on to the ways of the waves. Though Kathy has been a part of the surfing world for over 50 years, our team at Beachside Media has found a way to give not only one, but two 24

thebeachsideresident.com M A R C H 2 0 1 9

legends a “first” since the start of their career. During our 55th Annual Easter Surf Contest, Kathy “Gidget” Kohner-Zuckerman will be meeting the true and undisputed Women’s East Coast, Florida and US Champion, the woman who pioneered our sport here on the East Coast (as Gidget did for the West Coast), Mimi Munro for the very first time, here in Cocoa Beach. These two iconic women, as confirmed by Brian Gillogly, have never worked an event together and that’s why we all felt, here at Beachside Media, this would be the perfect opportunity to finally join these two champions together. It will, without a doubt, be a kodak moment and one for the books for years to come. Along with Gidget and Mimi, our event will honor other women champions that deserve the utmost respect, including Lisa Anderson, Frieda Zamba, April & Linda Grover, Kathy Anderson, Betsy Twombly and Renee Whitman. Gidget, along with the countless legends joining us for The 55th Annual Easter Surf Contest, is only one of the many amazing happenings that weekend, April 20th and 21st, 2019. We will have multiple surfing opens, judged by the legends themselves, exhibitions of many sorts, a dog surfing contest, an award ceremony and after party at The Hilton Hotel Deck and Tiki Hut, a Easter Egg Hunt with eggs so golden the adults will squeal, and so much more! People from every coast, of every age, will have a stellar time. There is no doubt about that.

PADDLING Being a surfer, the first thing must you learn is to paddle your board, and I mean if you’re not a good paddler, if you don’t cross that threshold, you most definitely are not and can not become a good surfer. When you get past the surf zone and get serious into your paddling, you’re working with a whole new set of rules whether you are an ocean or sprint paddler. This year, at The 55th Annual East Surf Contest, Beachside Media is having a paddling contest from Westgate’s Cocoa Beach Pier to Lori Wilson Park. It is a two mile “free for all” race for all board sizes. I like to use “free for all” because it separates the men from the boys. Get serious about this event, because we certainly are. We all but hope for perfect conditions, but let’s be real, this is the East Coast, so be prepared. Be in shape. Make us proud. I don’t want to hear whines about sharks, jellies, boats or the elements. This is all about you and your determination. Go for it; be part of the flow and win. This event will be The 55th Annual Easter Surf Contest’s first trophy in the morning, so everyone will be watching. Not only will you have hundreds of spectators on the beach watching you paddle your way to victory, it will be led by a Jetson Jet Powered Surfboard and footage will be captured by our drone cam. The pressure is on, use it to push you to the finish line.

Joel Tudor - Mentor and Idol to Justin*

Justin Quintal I can’t tell people often enough how much I love the fact that East Coast surfers, for the past decade, have been a dominating force in the water. When I was a kid, I told the press and every other surfer who thought otherwise this, in fact, would happen. You didn’t have to be from Australia, California or Hawaii to win. You had to be motivated, you have to have the surf stoke culture that we have and will always have here in Florida. Justin Quintal has been a champion as a part of the Van’s Pro Team for the last 10 years has won, and that says a lot. Only the best of the best are represented by Van’s, and Quintal definitely fits in that category. One of my favorite parts of Justin, is knowing that Joel Tutor has hosted the Duct Tape Invitational for over a decade, and our Jacksonville homeboy has won the majority of them (seven to be exact). Jax Beach has produced champions from the start, amongst the best in the world, Bruce Clelland, Dicky Rosborough, Clay Bennett, and Joe Rolland (just to name a few), so it doesn’t really surprise me Justin would pick up his longboard and challenge the entire world to his ultra cool style, and I truly mean that. He is the BOMB, a true soul surfer. His surfing oozes with flow, he is a natural competitor and, like his mentor Joel Tudor, he’s mellow. You’d never expect this guy to turn up the heat like he does, but his

actions speak loudly what his words do not. Longboarding is an art form, much like dancing, it is easy to look stupid and fuck it up with the wrong beat, but he’s got it together and every move is a synergy of perfect form. To position your board in a wave and still have control while making it all look easy, that’s a champion’s champion. We here at Beachside Media are honored to have him do his thing by opening The 55th Annual Easter Surf Contest at Lori Wilson Park on Saturday, April 20th, at 7:00AM and Sunday, April 21st, at 9:00AM. Justin will put on an exhibition that I guarantee will blow minds. You name it, he can do: hang ten, hang five, heels, massive stalls, killer cut-backs and off the lips. If you want to learn a thing or two check out Van’s Pro Team Surfer Justin Quintal’s performance and add it to your repertoire. Not only will he being doing a tango of sorts with the waves, but will also be sticking around Saturday night, from 5:00PM - 10:00PM, for the “Surf Stomp” award ceremony and after party at the Hilton featuring beach beats by “The Surf Chasers”. Don’t miss out, because I assure you, if you don’t come, you will. Much Aloha. Gary Propper

PET OF THE MONTH:

Pierre the Pussycat

My name is Pierre, and as much as the name suggests, I am quite the persnickety one. I have luckily come into my senior years. I am 18 years old and at times show signs of slowing down, but when I hear Kellie (yes, I must keep that professional distance between her and I) talk about taking me to the vet, I seem to perk right back up. And by perking back up, I mean, my obnoxious habits which make my human do whatever I want. It took a few months to train her and we do have set backs(like the time she thought I wasn’t going on her honeymoon) but the majority of the time, she does what she was trained to.

I have escaped a car in the middle of an intersection, I was featured on an adoption poster, been on multiple road trips, walked on a leash, commanded control over various dogs, cats, birds, possums, bob cats, etc. and been lost. Those guys who found me, were pretty cool. They fed me tuna and we watched Jerry Springer. I almost didn’t leave. I digress. That’s a story for another time. My best stories stem from spending hours watching storms roll in with my human, binge watching awful TV shows curled up on the couch, or demanding my human and her offspring to do things for me and timing how quickly they do so.

In my old age, I spend my spare time on the back porch staring at the birds, who are lucky I’m not even two years younger, and the fence I know I can no longer scale. I do dream about the days when I would fish in the pond, or the neighbor’s fish bowl, or roam acres of land searching for my next excitement. I used to follow my human around at a camp we worked at. Sometimes I would sit under her chair as she was lifeguard on duty at the pool, or sit on the edge of the dock while she hung her feet over, listening to the ear-piercing sounds of kids canoeing.

As I have accomplished much in my many years, I think in my last moments here I am going to enjoy what life brings me. It isn’t always easy but regardless life is always good. Meow.

As a self-indulgent French cat, I’d like to spend more time bragging about my escapades, but this column is simply not long enough. As to appeal to the American mind set, I will briefly detail the most exciting moments, although, I do believe the most growth happens in the quiet times, and by growth I mean for Kellie, not myself. 28

FISHING REPORT @allwateradventures @AllWaterAdventures

OFFSHORE

CAPTAIN GREG RAPP Will it be March Fishing Madness or will we just be mad at March? Historically, this month, anglers along the Central East Coast literally set their sights on cobia. I say historically, but if we don’t see a good cobia run this March, I might be referring to it as in ancient times next year. Cobia are a very temperature-oriented fish that do not like to tolerate anything below 67 degrees or above 76 degrees with 68 to 70 being the best temperature. In the year of a polar vortex (whatever that is) it does not give me a warm feeling, nor much hope for a good cobia season. That being said, we do need something different this March compared to the last few years, so let’s try a polar vortex. Scanning the water and straining your eyes to the limits will have many of us spending endless hours in search of the rush that is infectious once you have experienced your first successful cobia trip. Your most important tool is an accurate seawater temp gauge. You can also subscribe to real time seawater temperature charts to help you get an idea of where to start. Just be careful because things change quickly and I have seen that so-called real-time data way off the mark and has sent me chasing my tail a time or two. Most of the time, in the beginning of the season, you work south and offshore until you find 68 degrees and then start looking. Once you find your first fish, stick to that general area, because it is amazing how that half mile to mile section will be where they decide to pop that day. Cobia are not picky eaters, so a jig tipped with squid or a plain hook with a live bait will usually do the trick. Try to lead the fish and don’t hit them in the head or snag the manta ray they might be with. Later in the season you will start to broaden your search. The theory is they are migrating to the north as water temperatures become tolerable. March can be a fantastic month and honestly it is pretty easy to figure out without even stepping foot on your boat. If you go outside and it is warm and the wind is not blowing, let it peak your interest. If you go outside a second and third day, with warm calm conditions, then gear up to go look

INSHORE

CAPTAIN ALEX HUGHEY

Double header triggerfish aboard the Obsession. for cobia and tripletail that afternoon. If you get into day four or five days with the same conditions, then plan an early trip and go live-bait troll the reefs or bottom fish in the morning, because the king fish and stringer fish, such as triggers and lane snappers, will be ready to let loose. In the afternoon, work back to where the water temperature just hits 68 and start looking. Remember, early in the season, for any of these game plans, your focus will be to the south and then more spread out as water temperatures climb. If it remains cold and windy save your sick days and your money and wait for April. We hope for a great March and look forward to seeing everyone on the water. Captain Greg Rapp All Water Adventures

Some big cobia for Captain Christian and party.

Inshore remains the best bet! What a crazy few weeks we have had! Cold and windy to hot and calm, the weather just can’t seem to make up its mind! Regardless, the nearshore fishing has been very slow, with water temps in the high 50’s to low 60’s, there hasn’t been much bait or predators. There have been a few sheepshead and pompano, which seem to like the cooler temps. With this being said, the inshore redfish and trout bite really can’t be beat. Some days we have even had as many as 50 fish, including slot redfish and gator trout, and the occasional big ugly (black drum). I have been finding most fish in the little bit deeper areas, two to three feet, whether it’s been a windblown point, edge of a grass flat, or a trough in between docks and mangroves; the depth has really been the key to my success. I noticed the manatees are finally working their way back to the flats, this typically means we won’t be seeing as much cold. With hopes of a warm up, I think we will still have pretty consistent redfish and trout fishing, the drum will more than likely slow down, and the nearshore should pick back up with catches of redfish, possible drum, and even the possibility for some tripletail. Captain Alex Hughey All Water Adventures

This youngster caught a nice Indian River redfish!

BARTENDER OF THE MONTH @aidenjamo

Q & A INTERVIEW

Featuring the lovely Ms. Aiden Booska from Sandbar Sports Grill Whether it’s a stop in for lunch to eat a famous fish taco, cruise the scene, or Sandbooze a lazy Sunday away, the beautiful, flawless-faced, sweet and sassy Irish bar maiden, Aiden Booska, is an oasis for it all. She gave us all the dish and punctuated it with a proper beverage to boot. She’s a crowd favorite and we couldn’t take our eyes off her. In fact, we were impressed we kept it together long enough to get a proper interview… **swoon**

Q A

WHERE ARE YOU FROM, ORIGINALLY?

Q A Q A

HOW LONG HAVE YOU BEEN BARTENDING?

Q A

30

I am a military brat, so I’m really from all over. My dad was in the Marine Corp. I was born in Rockledge. If you want my heritage, I’m very Irish, and love whiskey. I cant dance like they do, but I sure can drink enough to make my family proud.

I’ve been at Sandbar for 8 years, but I’ve bartended for four of them.

WHAT IS YOUR DRINK OF CHOICE? I’m a mood drinker, usually. There are so many different kinds of drinks to choose from so it’s hard to pick just one, but I guess my go-to on a night out would be a shot of tequila with a pineapple back. The juice makes for a sweet pairing to the salt rim. It’s a drink with personality.

CAN YOU RECOMMEND A HANGOVER CURE? Hair of the dog, straight up. Whatever you were drinking the night before, that’s the trick. Don’t doubt me. Just do it. It’ll get you back on track.

Q A

MOST OVERRATED / UNDERRATED DRINK?

Q A

WHAT’S THE FUNNIEST PICKUP LINE YOU’VE HEARD WHILE ON THE JOB?

Q A

FAVORITE PERKS OF BEING A BARTENDER?

Q A

WHERE DO YOU SPEND YOUR TIME ON THE OTHER SIDE OF THE BAR?

Q A

TELL US A QUICK HORROR STORY ABOUT A BARTENDING MISTAKE YOU’VE MADE.

Q A

HOW MUCH DOES SEXUAL INNUENDO INCREASE YOUR TIPS?

Most overrated is vodka soda, we call it the “Skinny White Girl”, it’s just so plain and boring. Most underrated would be Knob Creek Bourbon. Nothing else is needed to make it amazing.

The other day I asked a customer if they would like to see a menu, their response was, “Are you on it?”. It was so ridiculous. Real slick guy. *finger guns*

The networking and connections you make with each customer. It’s a great feeling to have one of my first customers ever, from 8 years ago, still come to see me. I even have people who travel back and forth from Washington who always make sure to come see me when they’re in town.

Q A Q A Q A

WHAT WOULD YOU ORDER FOR YOUR LAST MEAL? As much seafood as I can fit in my belly. Scallops, crab legs, shrimp oysters, lobster, and anything else that swims in the ocean. I may or may not have been a mermaid in a past life. If by the end of this one, I go out with my breath smelling like salt water, I will go happy.

WHAT IS NUMBER ONE ON YOUR BUCKET LIST? I want to travel to Ireland and go the Jameson Distillery. My son’s name is Jameson, so I’d love to take him when he’s legal. He’s 5 now, so I’ve got some time to prepare.

TELL US ABOUT YOUR TATTOO. It’s for family. My mother loved elephants, so all the girls decided to get some sort of elephant tattoo.

Definitely Grills, have you ever had their margarita?? But most of the time I end up at Sandbar, it’s the place to be. Heard a rumor of a cool spot opening in the Village.

My first week of bartending, I dropped an entire, newly-opened bottle of Absolute Vodka. (Probably because I was being forced to make a “Skinny White Girl”)

They like it better when I am mean to them, which works out well for me. I don’t give them anything I don’t want to. But I do notice I make more now that I’m not wearing a ring, that’s for sure.

Do you know of a great bartender, or barista, and would like to nominate them for Bartender/Barista of the Month? Email staff@thebeachsideresident.com and tell us all about them.

RESTAURANT

OF THE MONTH Q & A:

The Green Turtle

Which dish, recipe, service, or offering are you most proud of? Which is one of the most popular items/ amenities? Well we have some favorites here from each segment of this business. For instance, in the cafĂŠ we have our fresh steamed succulent Maine lobster roll. It is hard to find good lobster like what they have in Maine and I realized this was one of my key ingredients to success for this particular plate. I use only live Maine lobster for my recipe and since I created this it has been a super star in our restaurant because of the fresh wild caught ingredients. Another one is our salad trio that includes our house recipe Asian chicken salad, our hearty albacore tuna salad, and our fresh dill shrimp salad. Other popular items are our certified Angus burgers and our fresh catch of the day, which changes constantly as we receive fresh deliveries from different vendors each and every day here. There is nothing like our fresh wild caught seafood fillets paired with chefs special sauces to compliment them. Tuna poke is also one of our newest additions that have hit the ground running with its exquisite taste and fresh nature. In our entrees section we do many styles of prepared salmon dishes that fly off the shelf. One of the most requested is our sesame soy ginger salmon. In the salad department we have a variety of favorites from our fresh shrimp and calamari ceviche to the more traditional staple of our beachside potato salad. Off our catering menu our petite Maryland style crab cakes are well known, especially when paired with our signature blend remoulade or stone ground mustard sauces. We also offer bacon wrapped meatballs stuffed with gorgonzola, 7 different sliders (including our angus beef sliders with caramelized onions & gruyere), ahi tuna spoons, and our baked goat cheese cups with cinnamon roasted apple compote that have all proven to be above the rest. Tell us what sets your store apart from the rest? By far, our attention to detail and customer service set us apart. We have an outstanding team that works together to expertly expedite your catering needs from the expert planners to the servers executing the event itself. We put the same amount of pride into any event, from weddings, to corporate events, to private events. Our operations are flawless because of the teamwork and amazing work ethic. What is your favorite perk of doing what you do? The perks are the best part; I am a very lucky person in this aspect. When it comes to this I am so grateful for the people I meet in this industry, from my employees to my customers. These people get more of my time than my family does and it keeps my world ever expanding. I get to travel all over to find new products and new vendors while I get to taste new sensations directly from the source. I get to go to trade shows and meet with new people that help keep my business constantly changing and evolving. I get to sample the wines to pair with my wonderful cuisine, and when it comes to seafood, meat, cheese, etc. I get to try everything first hand so I can make sure I am only selling the very best. Even with my caviar case I was able to try each and every one before I displayed it out for my customers to enjoy. That way I can properly pair these items and give the customers correct descriptions. What are some of the amenities or services you provide? We have lots to offer here at the Green Turtle Market; such as a retail gourmet market, an attached 50 seat fine cuisine restaurant, and a catering company that does it all from personalized one person meals to a 1,000 person banquets. All of these amenities are blanketed under one amazing concept. We have perfected a proven concept that works for all of our events, no matter how big or how small. Our crew is well experienced and can handle different types of events with different difficulty levels and all resulting in the same satisfaction.

TRAVEL BY GINNY

WHY WOULD SOMEONE WANT TO USE A TRAVEL AGENT?

As a traveler, it is not uncommon to feel cornered by the influx of “best travel deals” on the internet competing for your business. Though some sites seem to do the job quite nicely, most send you down a black hole full of unanswered questions and uncertain truths. In today’s world, the worldwide web is all you’ve got…right? WRONG Think about this, the person who developed the .com you’re using for your travel plans simply writes code 40 hours a week, often for multiple enterprises; they’re not truly concerned for your personal needs, travel requirements or really the actual business of travel itself. OPEN FOR BUSINESS

4 th Street Fillin Station

Gastro Pub & Grill

By Sharon Lacy @lime_and_a_coconut

Reduce, recycle, and reuse is the resounding mantra of today’s socially conscious society; reduce your consumption, recycle what you can and rebuild from the rubble of yesterday’s treasures. A creative turnabout has (wonderfully) entered our city, bringing forth a proper, open garage-style tap house for the masses to enjoy! After nine painstaking months of renovation, 4th Street Fillin Station Gastrobar and Grill opened their doors in February for good day-hangs in a fun and casual atmosphere. The open garage doors welcome adventurers into a re-invented space packed full of rustic, industrial concepts, repurposed mechanics and an environment that sparks extended entertainment for all. Owners and long-time friends, Daniel Todd, Mark Ingram and Mike Schwarz have combined their creative efforts to build what could possibly be praised as the classiest example of space-redesign Cocoa Beach has produced in many years. Details are all that matters in every corner of the cleverly constructed auto shop turned gastropub. Gadgets, gears, tools and repurposed mechanics influence nostalgia of a long-adored auto shop that closed its doors in 2017. When asked about the rigors of rehabilitating an old garage, owner Daniel Todd says, “We blew holes out of the back wall, completely rebuilt and renovated the bathrooms and convenience store, we also restored a couple hundred feet of water lines. It was a major renovation.” Daniel said of previous owner and mechanic, “We utilized a lot of his 34

tools in the furniture and décor. They’re even built into the tables.” Major, indeed! From designing a backyard wonderland, which originally began as a dirt pit, to engineering a fusion menu of gastropub bar-style food; no detail was overlooked. When we asked of the delicious particulars on the menu, we are told, “Diners will find a wide variety of street tacos, lots of vegan options—cauliflower, edamame and jack fruit, to name a few—and all wings will be cooked on the Big Green Egg; pulled pork, smoked. Weekly specials and entrees that are seasonal. We think it will give people a new option for fresh food. The only thing fried will be the fries.” The darling of the indoor design is a gorgeous bar framing a fully stocked liquor cabinet for crafted cocktails and 26 craft beers on tap. Say it louder for the people in the back: 26 CRAFT BEERS ON TAP! Owners of the 4th Street Fillin Station Gastrobar and Grill hope to become a locals’ favorite. They plan to keep things fresh with an ever-changing menu, seasonal ingredients and strong community involvement. The back outdoor space, with its pavers, astroturf, decks and fire-pit, will inspire many to host their private events there. It’s pet friendly in certain areas and the sound system is praiseworthy. You may find yourself pulling in for the fully operating gas station or convenience store, but we’ll guarantee you’ll find yourself wanting to park and post up for an extended stay.

GET FIT TIPS By Suzanne S. Elliott, M.A., Ed. @Suzanne Elliott

It’s time to MARCH and pick up your step! The best exercise is the exercise you will do! Sometimes it’s as easy as 1,2 buckle your shoes and 3,4 get out the door! Walking is the #1 participation sport in America. Walking is easy to adapt and maintain as part of your daily routine for fitness. Choose a time of day! To insure a successful walking program, chose the best time of day for you - then stick to a specific time. When do you have the most energy? Some people walk in the morning to get ready for the day or before the heat index is higher. Some walk during lunch hour. Others walk towards the end of the day to relieve tension and stress. Just find the time for walking. It may not be necessary to walk the same time every day, but just be sure you schedule your walks. Every time you miss a session, it will be that much harder to reach your goals. Some people don’t have a full 30 to 60 minutes to walk. That’s OK. Recent research suggests that three 10 minute or two 15 minute periods provide about the same benefits as one 30 minute period. So try to accumulate a full 30 to 60 minutes by doing some combination of the following: 10 to 15 minute walk during your breaks 10 to 15 minute walk after your meals FIND A PLACE TO WALK You should maintain your exercise program year-round. So it’s best to

36

thebeachsideresident.com M A R C H 2 0 1 9

choose a place where you can walk all the time. For outdoor walking, find a course with a smooth soft surface that does not intersect with traffic. When weather prevents outdoor walking, walk around an indoor track at a school or recreation center. Many people are putting on their walking shoes and walking around shopping malls. Regardless of where you walk, be sure it is well -lighted. Choose a walking partner It’s OK to walk alone. If a companion will make walking more enjoyable and help you to stick to your program, find someone else to walk with you. It is safer to walk with someone and will add variety to your walking routine. Your walking partner should be able to keep the same schedule and walk at the same pace as you. If you can’t find a partner then try a personal fitness trainer that can coach you to your exercise potential and help you monitor your heart rate, fat loss, and muscle growth. A brisk stroll can take you far along the road to FITness! Are you ready to put one step in front of the other? Left, right, left, right….. Suzanne Elliott, MA, Ed has been involved in elderly, kid & teen fitness and team training since 1972. She is a Master Yoga Teacher, Health Minister and Life Coach. COCOA BEACH, FL LOCAL SCRIBE VITALISM

By Summer Cowhig, Community Herbalist @passiflorareincarnata

Cocoa Beach is a well-known hot spot for spring breakers. What brings so many people to our beloved beach this time of year? The Sun, the sand, the fun - and most importantly - them “feel good” vibrations. Have you ever buried your feet in the sand, or simply walked down the beach and feel instantly relaxed? Most of us have heard about Grounding (or Earthing). For those of us new to this terminology, it refers to making contact with the Earth’s surface electrons by walking barefoot or sitting outside transferring the energy from the ground into the body. Emerging scientific research supports the concept that the Earth’s electrons induce multiple physiological changes of clinical significance, including reduced pain, better sleep, and a shift from fight or flight to rest and digest in the autonomic nervous system. It is established that the Earth’s surface possesses a limitless and continuously renewed supply of free or mobile electrons. The surface of the planet is electrically conductive (except in limited ultra-dry areas such as deserts), and its negative potential is maintained (i.e. its electron supply replenished) by the global atmospheric electrical circuit. Throughout history, humans mostly walked barefoot or with footwear made of animal skins. They slept on the ground or on skins. Through direct contact the ground’s abundant free electrons were able to enter the body, which is also electrically conductive. Through this mechanism, every part of the body could create balance with the electrical potential of the Earth, thereby stabilizing the electrical environment of our organs, tissues, and cells.

It is assumed that the influx of free electrons absorbed into the body through direct contact with the Earth likely neutralizes free radicals and thereby reduces acute and chronic inflammation. Reduction in inflammation as a result of earthing has been documented with infrared medical imaging and with measurements of blood chemistry and white blood cell counts. In a blinded pilot study, 60 subjects (22 males and 28 females) who suffered from self-described sleep disturbances and chronic muscle and joint pain for at least six months were randomly divided for the month-long study in which both groups slept on conductive carbon fiber mattress pads. 85% of Test Subjects fell asleep faster, 93% reported improved sleep, 100% reporting waking feeling rested, 82% reported improvement in muscle stiffness and pain, 74% reported improved joint pain, and 78% reported improvement in general wellbeing. Between 0%-13% of Control Subjects reported improved results in the same categories. The research done to date supports the concept that grounding or earthing the human body may be an essential element in the health equation along with sunshine, clean air and water, nutritious food, and physical activity. No wonder so many lovely folks flock to our beautiful beach to unwind from the hustle and bustle of living in the city. Earthing is an excellent Vitalist Practice that you can feel immediate beneficial results from trying! MARCH 2019

Travel Hacks and Self Care Tricks to Prevent Post-Travel Illness By Misti Blu Day McDermott @mistibluday

Traveling is good for the soul, and while it can be therapeutic and fun, it can also be exhausting. Packing for a trip can be stressful. We never want to forget anything but there is always something, right?! Making a list can help you stay organized. I always suggest to pack a small health kit incase you get sick. Being sick when away from home is horrible. The last thing you want to do at midnight when you spike a feve, is to run out to a store in an unfamiliar town. I always make sure to cover everything from fevers to an upset stomach. When you are traveling, you get exposed to a lot of germs. Bringing 1000mg vitamin C supplements will help boost your immune system. I take 2-3 with each meal to prevent getting sick. Always bring a good book. Watching movies can drain your phone and sometimes it is a nice break from that addictive glowing device. I also pack snacks. Think about this: it’ late at night and you get the munchies. Having granola bars, cup of soup, fruit or muffins, will be convenient and affordable so you aren’t stuck with jet lag insomnia cravings. Packing tea is always helpful too. The plane and any restaurant or hotel will offer hot water but the tea options are not always great. Buying tea at a coffee 38

shop gets expensive. Ginger tea is great for inflammation and digestion. Peppermint will sooth an upset stomach and both lavender and chamomile are relaxing. Herbal teas have many beneficial uses that can help keep you comfortable on your trip. I always bring Wildling Apothecary CBD oil. It is amazing for insomnia, anxiety, pain, inflammation, relaxation, headaches, skin and digestive issues. Wildling Apothecary’s Energy Sprinkles are crucial for traveling too. When we travel, we tend to burn the candle at both ends. This alkalizing greens mix helps stabilize the mood, keep electrolytes up, reduce illness, improve detoxification and increase energy. In case you get a headache or just want to freshen the stagnant airport air, rubbing peppermint essential oil on your temples will help. It also calms the mind, keeps the mosquitoes away, soothes sunburns and relieve IBS. Peppermint oil is also great with shower steam for respiratory relief. So, before you pack all of your favorite shoes and far too many clothes, make sure you leave room for self care products that will assist in keeping your immune system in good shape and allow time to relax. Most people get sick after a trip and you don’t have to be most people with these travel hacks. Best wishes, Misti Blu Day McDermott www.mistibludream.com

KEEP FLORIDA WEIRD THINK HAPPY THOUGHTS, OR ELSE

Coming in April at Golf N Gator... Ride our Elevated

Electric Go-Kart Track It`s like Go-Karts on Steroids!

SUNBURNS, RAZOR BURNS AND MORE We get it… Florida will never run out of stories highlighting the unbelievably moronic events that happen in our fine state. However, we cannot always continue to take the blame. After all, we are a destination spot for those who are looking to vacation, relax, and soak up our sun shining state; like one woman at an Orlando resort… Vacationers witnessed her shaving her legs in a public pool, full of people.

Walt Disney World’s magical experience is known to be one of the happiest places on Earth, but every so often, the fairy dust settles and things get real. After a full day of exploring all the theme park has to offer, this Michigan woman was also given the grand tour of the Orange County Jail System for choking a student who had blocked her view of the firework finale in Magic Kingdom.

HONEY, DON’T WAIT UP

DO NOT PASS GO You know how the saying goes, it’s all fun and games until someone gets hurt, or in this case, arrested. A police officer on duty in St Johns Florida was been pulled over by another patrolling police officer. The only problem being was the other officer was a 20 year old Ohio man with illegal lights on his 99 Crown Vic and failed to realize Florida does NOT have a get out of jail free card for police imposters.

NAKED & AFRAID A young man from Massachusetts went to Brevard County court in a 2-piece jumpsuit and flips flops, which happened to be three more pieces of clothing than he was found in on this Titusville woman’s back porch. Though she is a woman of advanced years, she stood her ground, put her hands up like a bear with claws, removed her teeth, and frightened the naked man away. The woman claims, “He wasn’t scary, he was a dumbass.”

No matter how many lanes Florida highways seem to have, traveling, no matter the time of day, is never an easy task. With bumper to bumper traffic and fender-bender accidents, there always seems to be something to slow down our commute. However, a man coming from Boca Raton took road rage to a whole new level when he stopped all traffic on I-4 to land his private plane. “Honey, I’m going to be a little late for dinner.”

SPREAD YOUR WINGS AND FLY Yes, many come to Florida on travel, but we too can leave the nest. This Ft. Lauderdale passenger, and U.S. Airways, refused to let anyone clip his wings or require him to add more feathers to his wardrobe. Despite the complaints and wandering eyes he was permitted to board his flight. We can imagine that the lack of layers allowed for a very brief security pat down as well, maybe this man is on to something!

HOROSCOPES

Aquarius Jan 20 - Feb 18 Leo Jul 23 - Aug 22 Traveling plays a key role in accelerating your growth this year, Aquarius. Take time to breath new, fresh air. There’s no place too far and no shortage of new sights to see. Share your new experiences with those you hold dear, and not just through the virtual, doubletapped world we live in.

Feed your inner cub this month, Leo. Make new memories by doing old activities with your family and loved ones. Don’t let the world fool you, nothing you do with those closest to your heart is ever out of style. Keep it simple, as the saying goes, it’s just a walk in the park.

Pisces Feb 19 - Mar 20

Virgo Aug 23 - Sep 22

You might have to make some sacrifices for the excursion you’re preparing to take, Pisces, but you will soon see it is very much worth it. Whether it be a thoroughly planned tour or wandering aimlessly with a map in hand, keep a positive attitude. You will find yourself dealing with a few mishaps along the way, but it is up to you not to blow them out of proportion. Keep the worries at a minimal for optimal reward.

Travel through this month with respect for the differences in others, Virgo. Know the difference between being seemingly shy and being unapproachable. The finer details of your daily duties should not interfere with the simple act of being kind, and if you choose to take this advice, it may prove to helpful in accomplishing what you have intended for your life.

Aries Mar 21 - Apr 19 It’s time to take it easy, Aries. Proceed through this month with caution. Relaxing may seem like a dream with all the obstacles you have to face, but direct your energy toward helping others. Your charm and agreeability make for great opportunity to meet new people, cultures and adventures alike, and by the end of it all, your duties will be done and your days will not be wasted.

Taurus Apr 20 - May 20 You’re living your best life, Taurus. Keep it up! Your persistence, perseverance, and ability to bulldoze through many of the tasks at hand is challenging, but you’re making it work; it’s the others that have work to do.

Gemini May 21 - Jun 20 A leisure trip is in store for you Geminis. A trip to a distant country with your loved ones will not only give you a breath of fresh air but will also strengthen your bond and sense of connectivity with each other. Let go of your fears and insecurities, it’s time to trust the Universe has your back!

CROSSWORD

TRAVEL, TOURISM, AND CURRENCY OF THE WORLD 1 3

Scorpio

Oct 23 - Nov 21

The goals you have in mind for life’s journey may seem tantalizingly but beyond your reach. Be patient and persevere, Scorpio. Any bumps or detours in the road should smooth out. Your growth will help you to focus on your happiness, not your worries.

Sagittarius Nov 22 - Dec 21 If things aren’t going your way on this trip through life, Sag, a simple change of lanes may be just what is needed to turn the whole thing around. If you can, get outside and get physical. Moving your body will hugely benefit your mind by ensuring it isn’t overworked. See: Get Fit Tips, page 36.

Capricorn Dec 22- Jan 19 Whether on the road, or back at home, you will have a smooth journey through the world that surrounds your life. Capricorns can expect to develop a better understanding and new insight on what paths to take. Be open, be brave, maybe even do something a little daring -- and absorb it all with delight.

Take a break from the flock you’re migrating with, Cancer. Birds are meant to fly, not constantly chirp. You may not see it now, or are deciding to not acknowledge it, but the fact of the matter still stands; you’re preoccupying yourself with things to do when you should be focused on the things you already have at hand. LINDSAY BEAVER

SUE FOLEY

TORNADO BAIT

TOUGH AS LOVE

THE ICE QUEEN

TEACUP’S HALF FULL

Canada’s own Lindsay Beaver busts on the scene with her first CD, which she produced, and has some great guitar and lyrics. Some of the songs sound like 1950’s and 1960’s era stuff, which is cool as she has that old-school guitar sound. “You’re Evil”, one of my favorite cuts, falls into Lindsay’s self-described category of Punk-Blues. The more you listen to this CD, it becomes apparent that this classically trained vocalist and a jazz-trained drummer is very talented beyond her years. “Too Cold To Cry” rolls off like a hip version of music from 50 years ago. She then dives into some Jump Blues with some sweet horns and a swinging uptempo beat. Then she slows right down with “You Hurt Me”. The vocal range of this performer is incredible. Fast, Slow, Fast again…this CD is just poppin’… It will have your toes tapping in no time. She really stole my heart though with “Got Love If You Want It”, a remake of one of my favorite Blues Artists of all time, the incomparable Slim Harpo. Lots of good rockabilly-style guitar on this one folks, it’s just one good jam after another. She gets back to the real blues with “Lost Cause”, a great jam about what else…love gone wrong. “Let’s Rock” takes us back to the sock hop, with Ritchie and Pottsie in the band and The Fonz giving a big “Ayyyyy”. A great CD I would definitely recommend. lindsaybeaver.com

This is an excellent CD. Another Canadian I was all set for Foley to be my CD of the export, Foley flows like an ice-cold Molson month until I got ahold of this. All I can say is go after a hot sesh at the CB Skatepark. out and get this CD right now. I really did not She has been belting out the Blues for know how much I needed this in my life until I heard it. Hard to pin this down in the genre nearly 30 years and shows no signs of category, reminds me of Femmes and Milkmen stopping. Excellent, sultry lyrics on this CD at times, maybe some Butthole Surfers too, but accompany great guitars and good beats. If with Chrissy Hynde singing. Except Chrissy just I had to pick a favorite song on this disc did some whippets. Or inhaled helium. Lead I would say all of ‘em. While a lot of the singer Msesippi McQuown dons a paper bag gang is raving about Samantha Fish these on her head on the cover as does many of her days, I would say the Ice Queen can stand adoring fans at the live performances. We have a toe-to-toe not unlike Becky Lynch will do drummer who plays a suitcase, a Tiedye Cowboy at Rasslemania against Rowdy Rhonda. And who plays banjo, and a Momma who plays the Rainstick. “Let Me Be” is a great cut, although I just as hard-hitting as a flying elbow drop am still trying to figure out just what she is saying. off the top rope, this CD smacks you right But that’s OK, I can’t understand 90% of Screamo in the face. The title cut “Ice Queen” has Metal but I love it just the same. “Whoa To The a smooth swanky groove that makes you Man” is another solid jam, as she says this town want to have another bourbon with one ain’t big enough for two of us with some gravelly of them big ice cubes in it. There is some vocals, and I swear I hear a kazoo. There is a insanely groovy guitar on this one. “Fools lot going on in this CD and it comes together Gold” starts off with a familiar voice perfectly. “Don’t You Call Me Baby” is Msesippi’s straight out of cheap sunglasses, yes it’s Billy take on a romantic slow jam, banjo style, and you can feel her emotions transcending the song and Gibbons from ZZ Top. Foley’s duet with reaching deep into your soul. “Cheesus Crust” Gibbon’s sings of romance being nothing is another knee-slapper that gives me visions of but sedimentary rock known as pyrite. Gibby and some pizza toppings while McQuown Hey I got a B.S. in Biochemistry so I can and her brood sing about food products and say stuff like that. However, unlike the cheap then here comes the kazoo again. I really don’t stuff, this disc is SOLID GOLD.“Send Me to know what’s going on but I love every second of The ‘Lectric Chair” is another anthem for it. A great group of musicians that complement the ladies as she tells the judge she slit her each other like a well-oiled piece of machinery. man’s jugular when she caught him cheating. Like I said, I really don’t know how I lived my life up to this point without this golden nugget of Now who hasn’t had that thought…? goodness. “Thunder” is another great jam with Haha just kidding. “Death of a Dream” is great harmony and guitar with a nice snare drum a very slow one about a failed romance beat (or is that a suitcase?). If you buy any CD with some very gentle finger-plucking this year, this should be it.Tornadobait.club

AMERICA’S CHILD Starting off the month of March, known to some as International Women’s Month and March 8th known as International Women’s Day, I thought it would be a good idea to do a tribute to women musicians this month. The first one is probably the most wellknown out of the bunch: multiple awardwinning Shemekia Copeland. Copeland broke out at the tender age of 18 and in twelve short years she was named 2010 Blues Artist of The Year. For me, this is one of those CDs that I had to listen to several times before I could really appreciate it. On the surface, many of the songs sound like anthems for a snowflake, but the variety of songs on the CD make it stand out. A guest appearance by a gravelly-throated John Prine on “Great Rain” adds a nice touch of eeriness to this song, one of the better cuts on the disc. “The Wrong Idea” is a funny song that could be an anthem for the ladies this month, as she is out with her friends and not looking for a bed partner for the evening. “What makes you think you got a shot, of gettin’ this good stuff that I got”, classic line. In “Promised Myself”, she slows it down with a sad tale of heartbreak and redemption. “Such a Pretty Flame”, has some good guitar, I just, how can I say it without offending, think this performer needs some voice lessons. While she is very beloved in Blues circles, this is not one of my favorite artists or CDs. shemekiacopeland.com
