The Beachside Resident April 2019: Easter Issue

Page 1

Editor’s Note I don’t know about all of you, but March was a bit of a roller coaster ride for us here at Beachside Media. March began with diminishing grey skies which brought forth the sunshine, defrosting us delicate, Floridian flowers. The promise of longer, warmer, happier days were upon us. Local businesses began to flourish from our out of state visitors who appreciate and love our area as much as we do. Spring has sprung and things were indeed looking up. Unfortunately, life has its dips and turns, and occasionally, it also has a way of stopping you right in your tracks. Friday, March 15, was one the the hardest days we have experienced here, as a team, as friends, we lost a man we held very dear to our hearts. His name, Gary Propper. When GP first started hanging with us, I wouldn’t say it was love at first site, but it didn’t take long for us to fall for him and his personality. He was easy to talk to and cool as shit. He was, undeniably, EXACTLY who he was with no apologies, no remorse and no need to justify. He would often remind us of our unique, misfitted team and how we were united in the desire to perform for the greater good and our mission. GP was always there, urging us with the faith we needed to carry on. That was what brought us so close, and why losing him has been so difficult. Losing our friend has most certainly left us with an empty seat that may never be filled. It’s easy to get caught up in the questions of: Did we listen hard enough? Do we remember all his teachings? Did we do enough to show him we cared for him in the same way he cared for us? GP wouldn’t have wanted it that way. He wouldn’t have wanted us to fret. Rather, he would’ve wanted us to remember him as that goofy misfit, a man of his word, and a strong force who simply rode the waves of life. GP. This one’s for you. Sincerely,

Amanda Dreyer

ON THE COVER This art piece was created by our dear friend, Gary Propper, in honor of the Easter Surf Contest our team is putting on this April. Written in the small crevices of the canvas are little snippets of what you’ll see at the event, the companies who are supporting it and names of all those he held dear to his heart that were, and still are, helping him to make this event a reboot for the books. Gary knew we had the power to make this great, and we plan to do so, for a man we have lost but could never forget.

In Odd We Trust

The Injustice

Created by Dean Koontz 9780345499660, $10.95, www.amazon.com

James Patterson and Emily Raymond 9780316478830, $9.99 www.amazon.com “The Injustice” begins with Theo Foster, a high school student accused of posting a compromising picture of a student athlete on the internet. Theo states he is innocent, but no one believes him, because the circumstantial evidence against him is overwhelming. Determined to prove his innocence. He involves others to help him find the truth he believes is out there. The tale races along with many complicated twists and turns to the finale “The Injustice” is a warning of how careful we all have to be with social media and other related forms of communication today. Paterson fans will not be disappointed with this fine chilling tale for all ages to enjoy.

No Slam Dunk

Mike Lupica 9780525514855, $17.99, www.amazon.com “No Slam Dunk” is more than just a good basketball novel. It is about the importance of family and teamwork with characters faced with many challenges and conflicts that move the story along to its conclusion. Lupica has always told a great tale of sports but “No Slam Dunk” is one of his best ever. Wes has a father in the military who returns home from war who just is not there for him while he is competing with another athlete on the basketball team. The characters are well defined as the writing deftly moves along to the very end. “No Slam Dunk” is excellent reading for all ages.conclusion.

Graphic Novels are perfect ways to introduce new readers to an author’s works in two different art forms. Dean Koontz took the plunge with “In Odd We Trust” where he presented his character from several of his novels to an entirely new audience of readers. Odd Thomas is nineteen years of age who is a cook at a local diner in the town of Pico Mundo California. People come to the location to try his special creations of tasty pancakes. More important he is able to communicate with the dead. He is very helpful to police to solve cases of murder because he is able to tell many times who committed the act by his ability to talk to the victim. He is brought in to help stop a serial killer on the loose. “In Odd We Trust” is a fast-paced story, that has a lot of twists and turns, to the very end, sure to please Koontz fans.

Wild Card

Gleden Oaks The Streets Show No Love

Stuart Woods 978035219281, $28.00, www.amazon.com “Wild Card” is another great Stone Barrington mystery in the long running series. Stone Barrington once again is a target an assassin’s bullet. Opening with an attempt that fails, Stone stays one jump ahead, until the very end when things are tied up again in a neat little package. Along for the ride are Dino and other familiar characters who add to the mix of suspenseful circumstances that meticulously unfold. “Wild Card” opens with a bang then briskly moves along to its final fun ending. Woods is in top form with “Wild Card.”revealing conclusion.

Becoming

Jeremiah Jones 9781947718128 $17.95, www.amazon.com

Chad Johnson is trying to distance himself from portions of his negative past while caring for a grandmother, going to college and working in a steady job while attempting to make something of himself. He reconnects with a childhood friend who offers a quick way to get ahead that will take him into the darker side he is determined to leave some day. Now he has to lead a double life to get to his goal that he hopes will never be revealed to those he loves. “Glend Oaks” is a well written story of a character trying to not go back to his negative roots of street gang dome while trying to accomplish so much at a young age for so many other people. The author drives the novel along with several conflicts that are in disharmony with each other that races along to a very satisfying ending. “Glend Oaks” is a gritty well written thriller that is the first novel by a very talented author.

Why Jetson? Jetson is a surfboard that includes a miniature jet which gives you a boost at the most important moments: paddling momentum to takeoff on your wave. It is a surfboard that will allow you to catch more waves to make the most of your surfing experience. Moreover, when the size of the waves or the strength of the current goes beyond your limits, Jetson provides you with extra power to stay at the take off spot. It is a powerful tool that helps you catch big waves, making training sessions longer while maintaining your paddle power endurance. It is especially valuable for surfers getting a late start in the sport. Once you’re riding the wave, thanks to the full integration of its small design components and its ease of use, your surfing experience becomes as fluid and intense as the ride you get on a regular surfboard. Power, weight and size have been optimized to maintain the traditional surfing experience. As a result, you will still have to paddle your own way out into the break with powered assistance especially for remote breaks far from shore. Thanks to Jetson, though, you will be able to go above and beyond your usual limits by using this new system: battery powered propulsion. Jetson boards are not, however, recreation boats, beach toys, or jet skis. You will still have to paddle through the waves to ride them.

MONEYTALK By Steve Hauser

In the January issue, we used index funds to build a portfolio but never really defined what that means. Let’s do that now. A common question from the beginning of time has been “How’d the market do today?” Originally, the answer was “How the hell would I know?” Then someone came up with the idea of an index. Basically, an index is a number of stocks that when grouped together might represent the market. Some early examples are the Dow Jones Industrials or the Dow Jones Transports, etc. Standard and Poor’s got into the mix with the S&P 500 index. It covered most of the market by using the 500 largest companies in America. Today there are hundreds of indexes covering everything. Before, during or after this time, another bright idea was to group different stocks together to create an easier way to invest and mutual funds were born. A mutual fund can consist of stocks, bonds, options or just about anything. It was only a matter of time before someone stuck their chocolate into someone else’s peanut butter and voila! Index Mutual Funds. Exchange Traded Funds (ETFs) soon followed offering an alternative to Mutual Funds. They trade more like a stock instead of once a day. Either one will work when building a portfolio. The bottom line is watch out for expenses. If your mutual fund is a “loaded fund”, that’s a fee paid to your advisor and can be as high as 5% or more. Some are paid when you buy, some when you sell and some bleed you out for the duration that you hold it. “No Load” mutual funds are what to ask for and demand from your broker. They’re very common. Both mutual funds and ETFs will have annual fees called an Annual Expense Ratio. The smaller the better. While the indexes carry on indefinitely, the stocks within them can come and go. The thirty stocks in the Dow Jones Industrial Index are not the same ones that were there at the start. When one gets dropped, another is picked up to replace it. The web site listed below will provide more detail if you’re not sure which one is best for you. If you don’t care either way and want the short answer, go with ETFs. GARY PROPPER MUCH MUCH ALOHA

I got my first surfboard in 1959 at 11. At 14 I got my first Custom made Hobie surfboard. The day I met Gary in Laguna Beach in the fall of 1980, I asked if he was the surfer, Gary Propper. I’d ridden the Propper model Hobie. The next day we had a dawn patrol at San Onofre and became instant mates. Water dogs. We’ve been howling at the moon ever since. That began a 6 year run that saw us produce a dozen comedy specials with Gallagher for Showtime where Gary’s keen knowledge of the entertainment business led to groundbreaking marketing strategies and record breaking license fees and budgets. There was nothing common about Gary. I remember him telling the attorney to tell not ask Showtime that the cost per show was going to be 3 x’s the previous fee. The lawyer said that’s crazy, but honored GP’s stance and got the biggest commission check of his life. Gary was beyond generous. He always had his eye out for the lonely, forgotten, low person on the totem poe and make them feel as important as other people though of themselves….He saw in people the truth….he cut thru bullshit better than anyone I ever knew and he enlisted the support of the key people he knew could insure the success of a project. In the 39 years I knew GP I never saw him back down from a challenge. And I could never tell him something he didn’t already know! How does a guy who never owned a computer, could no more spell Goggle or send a text than fly to the moon, somehow seemed to know everything that was going to be trendy or hot or new and popular…like way before everyone else….he dug nuggets of information from his endless magazines and his amazing network of friends who listened to his rants or dreams or visions over the ever present phone. When Gary called me from Detroit in the late summer of 1987 I was in the middle of preparing a Gallagher special. He told me to drop everything and get the rights to this comic book he’d just found that was going to make a hit movie. Mind you, it’s hard to hang with GP and not smoke pot, but I figured he was way off the deep end with the Turtles. He was reading the lines from the comic book over the phone saying we could get this guy to do this character and add some stuff like “cowabunga Dude”….And really that changed our lives. We got an option on the rights and took 17 months out the the 18 month option to set up the deal with Golden Harvest and Newline….and it kept nearly falling apart …. and then 3 years after we started we released our first of three features. The Turtles did change our lives and kept us both in Florida for longer than either of us thought would ever happen. We spent 12 glorious years in the waters near Sebastian Inlet and watched as he gave my little girl some stye tips on the longboard. He would be beyond words when he sees this month’s issue of Surfer Magazine that features that grown-up girl at Rocky Point. He loved anyone who truly goes for it with reckless abandon. Over the years Gary has ignited more careers and outrageous ideas than anyone I have ever know. Gerry Lopez once told me the he admired and respected Gary because he was the first professional surfer to treat himself as a professional, demanding appearance and endorsement fees and building prize money for all. For all of it Gary wanted no special treatment or consideration, other than having the chance to prove he was the best. He’d rather have a handicap than an advantage, cuz he had an indomitable belief that he would prevail. No matter what. Gary loved to reminisce about past exploits, but most who knew him would confirm that such exploits were always shared experiences. One of my dear friends is a gaffer electrician who used to work for a theater in Wichita, Kansas… back in the early eighties he met GP backstage and went out of his way to load some fruit into the theater when GP was setting up a show. After the show, Dennis my friend was back stage and GP handed him a $100 bill and a big joint, which they smoked together…..years later Dennis remembers that night because it made him change his opinion about big shots. GP was a big shot, in his own mind, in the minds of his competitors and certainly in the minds of his fans….He was that flash of lightening that gets caught in bottle ….he bashed his way around and brought brilliance and love and smiles to so many ….If there is abiding hope he would have wanted to share it would be to Go Surf. Nothing, ever, ever, ever is, was or ever will be better or more important than washing ourselves in the ocean….of playing in the waves with our friends and making memories that will last across the universe. GP had style and he wanted everyone he came into touch with to own their own style…to claim their place….he encouraged that in all of us. Paddle out. Kim Dawson, Orlando 12

BALSA BILL # G A RY P RO P P E R team with one goal. Block Propper and Catri so Dewey could win.

I first saw Gary surf on a summer day in New Jersey in 1965. In those days there was no internet media. No cell phones. The communication was word of mouth, the Jersey shore version of the coconut wireless. The word on our beach was that the Surfboards Hawaii team captained by Dick Catri was in town for the Atlantic States Contest and would be surfing at the Surf Club in Ortley Beach. It was a beautiful summer day. Glassy morning and a solid summer swell of about 3’. I was amazed at the surfing of the team especially Gary Propper. The star of the team. The next year, 1966, the team was back. The Atlantic States Contest in Seaside Heights was the showdown for the Weber Team and the Surfboards Hawaii Team. Dewey Weber, 10 years Gary’s senior was the legendary surfboard builder and Malibu surf star known as the “Little Man on Wheels.” He had brought his team of California hot doggers to surf in the East Coast contest circuit starting in New England. The next stop on the tour, The Atlantic States Contest in Seaside Heights, New Jersey. There was no interference rule in those days as long as there was no physical contact. In the finals Gary Propper and Dick Catri were up against a field of Californians on their Dewey Weber boards. Bob “Porkchop” Barron, Tom Lonardo were among the members of Dewey’s 14

thebeachsideresident.com A P R I L 2 0 1 9

On every wave Propper and Catri took off on there were at least one or two of Dewey’s riders boxing them in. In spite of this Gary did pretty good. They didn’t count on the fact that he could hang five going straight off in the soup. But he didn’t do good enough to win. Dewey took first getting a trophy and a check for $500. But Gary got his revenge a couple of days late in the East West Open at the East Coast Surfing Championships in Virgina Beach. Propper took off on a wave, walked to the nose and when he did his fin slipped out. While not unusual today, back then it didn’t happen often since fins on the old noseriders hung right off the tail. His board slid around and now riding fin first he again walked up to the nose which was now the tail and flipped the board around doing a 360. No one had ever seen a move like this before. Contest or no. Competition Surf magazine called it Proppers “Fantastic Spectacular” maneuver. Surfer magazine ran the headline: “For the First Time East Beats West.” I asked Catri about it years later. “After that ride he came out of the water. ‘What are you doing?’ I said. Gary said that they were going to judge the best three waves, that he’d had three waves good enough to win the contest so he was coming in.” “Get back out there and if a good wave comes in be on it!” Catri told him. Catri told me about Gary’s style: “I’d been living in Hawaii in ‘63.

I’d seen the surfing of Joey Cabell which was a departure from the classic Hawaiian style. I called it an acrobatic style off surfing. And When I came back to Florida with Shagg to open the surf shop and to promote Surfboards Hawaii I started looking for a surfer with the ability to adapt to that style. I knew I couldn’t do it, but I could coach someone to do it. Propper was the guy. He had the ability and the drive.” Gary on his own style: “Surfing the small waves in Cocoa Beach I tried to get as much speed as I could. I paddled fast for a wave. Faster and faster trying to beat the wave to the beach. That would give me extra speed for my first turn.” Tom “Boogie” Morey on Gary Propper. “He once told me to never paddle straight in. Always paddle on an angle. Either in the opposite direction across the peak to set up the turn, or on a fast closing wave paddle in the direction of the break.” Publisher of Surfing East magazine Dick Van Winkle once said, “I saw Gary surfing some one foot waves and he made it look like overhead surf.” The secret to Gary’s distinctive style now revealed. Gary was a movie producer, agent and manager to the stars. But the surfer from Cocoa Beach who innovated a style and took it to the world is how I remember Gary Propper.

FISHING REPORT

OFFSHORE

The month of April is the time we start making the CAPTAIN GREG RAPP ride 25 to 35 miles offshore in high hopes that the most well-known of all the saltwater sport fish, MAHI MAHI, DOLPHIN FISH, DORADO and many other names depending on the size and sex. BULL, COW, PEANUT, SCHOOLIE, BAILER, GAFFER, SLAMMER, can all be added to the catch. Enough with my lame attempt at trying to think of every name they have and let’s talk about if we are going to catch them this month.

Traditionally, May is the go-to month for mahi but the last handful of years mid-April has seemed to be the kick off. Unfortunately, the only way to truly know if they have shown up is to burn the fuel and ride. A lot of people will advise you to be like a pelican and wait at the dock for a good catch to be brought in and then go as quickly as you can. That can work to extent, but you have to always remember that yesterday’s fish are already caught. In addition, these fish don’t come in a steady stream, in Canaveral, they come in waves. Any surfer can tell you the only way to catch the perfect wave is to be in the water when the opportunity presents itself.

spectacular mahi fishing. You might even see a wahoo or sailfish in the mix. You can troll natural bait and artificial or just ride the edge until you see them and sight cast. When these conditions happen, you can’t go wrong but....... What do you do if you ride all that way and find nothing? One option is to do what we like to call BOBO trolling. BOBO is where you put the trolling spread out and spend the rest of the day trolling back to the dock in hopes of a bite or two. Another option is to prospect fish for May when grouper open up. Slim down your trolling spread to something that can be quickly brought in and re-deployed. Troll based on where you think you will find good new bottom structure. If you see something mark up on the bottom machine, drop a chicken rig with squid or cut bait. If you catch snappers, porgies or basically anything other than a lizard fish or golden seabass, then congratulations you found a new spot that can and will hold grouper. Focus this prospecting effort between 140 to 240 feet of water. The main reefs can have fantastic fishing for king mackerel. A frozen sardine combined with a C&H king buster on #6 AFW wire is all you need to be successful trolling the 60 to 100-foot reefs. Visit the fellas at Handler Fishing Supply in Merritt Island and they will set you up proper. Plenty of cobia will still be around for those willing to leave some time in the late afternoon to look for them. A morning of slow trolling the main reefs followed up by an afternoon of cobia fishing is where I would say your day is best spent. A lot less work and a much cheaper fuel bill, but if you literally want to go for the gold you need to ride to the deep and take a look. You just might catch a big bull with a nice cow and pick up a few bailers at the same time.

You need that perfect day when the Gulf stream current Captain Greg Rapp goes from nothing to a raging kegger with bait and seaweed All Water Adventure in the mix. On that day, you have the perfect cocktail for All Water Adventures, located at Sunrise Marina behind Grills in Port Canaveral, offers the full spectrum of on-the-water activities. Each trip is run by full time guides of our family owned businesses. They have a love and passion for the area and what they do. If you want to get on the water for some fishing or just relaxing, then give them a shout. 321-222-7511 - www.AllWaterAdventures.com

PET OF THE MONTH Hi everyone, I’m Presley, the 140-pound bloodhound who loves to cuddle. Many people stop and ask my mom if I’m full bred because they have never seen such a gigantic bloodhound! Some of my favorite things in life are swimming, playing endless amounts of frisbee, long walks around the neighborhood with my best friend Birdy and hanging out with my mom and nana. I was born on April fool’s day, which automatically makes me a trickster. I often trick my mom by acting like I want to come inside but run away as soon as she opens the door! It’s so funny seeing my mom and nana try to wrangle me into the house! One of my hidden talents is that I can open the sliding glass door all by myself! I had no choice but to teach myself so I can run outside whenever I see one of those pesky cats! My family says its nice that I know how to open the door, but would be even better if I learned how to close it... but that would make it too easy! My dad is away in New York training to be a Merchant Marine, so I don’t get to see him often, but when he does come home we do cool things like skateboarding and going out in the woods. My dad doesn’t have to do much work when we skateboard because I pull him, and he gets to take a ride! Every Wednesday my best friend Birdy (who is also a bloodhound) and her dad Dean pick me up and take me to the flea market! We always have lots of fun walking up and down the isles getting lots of pets, love and meeting new friends. One of my favorite parts about going to the flea market is seeing how many different treats I can get! Showing people that I can sit, give paw and look at them with my droopy red eyes always gets me what I want! My favorite time of the day is when I get to cuddle up to my mom and nana on the couch. I know that I may not be as little as some other dogs, but it doesn’t stop me from laying on someone’s lap! Bed time wouldn’t be the same without a midnight snack (or two) and sucking on my blankey (it puts me right to sleep). My mom always says she wishes she could be as comfortable as I look while I sleep, if I could teach her I would! I hope you enjoyed learning a little bit about a big bloodhound like me, and any of you humans out there reading this story to your pet should have them share their story too!

RESIDENT OF THE MONTH

Jimmy Dean Who are you and where are you from?

My name is Jimmy Dean (I promise you, the breakfast sausage joke DOES indeed get old). I’m a true Florida native, born and raised on the Space Coast. Why did you decide to start carving tikis? While in between jobs in the early part of 2015, I did some soul searching. I began to ask myself what was I doing, how had I been living my life, and what did I truly want for the future. My findings were that I love nature, have an entrepreneurial spirit, and a desire to build. Where did you learn to carve? My thirst to use my hands and return to the outdoors steered me to visit a local friend who carved tikis in his spare time. I was interested in the process and began to apprentice under his guidance. By mid 2015, I carved my first official tiki. It had a silly grin and pineapple headdress. My family and friends were pleasantly surprised with my new found talent. The confidence boost inspired me to carve more tikis. Where do you get your materials and what do you use to carve? Reclaimed wood, being a native, I like to use a part of my roots by transforming native Sabal palms into something new. Reduce, Creative Reuse, & Recycle. I use a chainsaw for most of my work and chisels for the finer details, except when I’m at music festivals, I use solely chisels so I’m not interrupting people that are enjoying the music. Where did your business begin? Having always been a big supporter of local & small business, I decided to set up some tikis at my home town’s Farmer’s Market. Thus, 28

thebeachsideresident.com A P R I L 2 0 1 9

turning my hobby into an opportunity to meet people and earn money. Eager to provide more options and increase my skill set, I began carving more detailed pieces. Evolving from tikis to seascapes, 3D sculptures, and unique custom requests. Which then paved the way for me to attend other venues. Where can we find you now? I discovered that music events, festivals, and art shows are my calling. Humanity coming together through imagination is an energizing and uplifting experience. The good vibes and creative expressions are motivating and fuel my enthusiasm. I also have my own website, FloridaChill. net. It came about because of people always ask me what my carving style was, I just started telling them “Florida Chill”. It’s basically my way of incorporating chance, necessity, hard work, patience, and positive vibes all into one. What do you love most about the Annual Tiki Carver Invitational? I take a lot of pride in my work, so winning is always great, but for me, what excites me most is the competition itself. I get to carve beside a bunch of other talented carvers, see the many different styles that people create and gain inspiration by meeting lots of new people. Come watch, and even bid on, Jimmy’s, and many other talented Tiki Carvers, beautiful creations at the 2nd Annual Tiki Carver Invitational April 20 & 21 at Lori Wilson Park in Cocoa Beach.

Spring into a relaxing break, for good. By Jacki Mick Psst! You. Yeah, you. Have you lived that cannabidiol life yet? Do you struggle with pain, sleep disorders, PTSD, or similar? Cannabidiol (CBD) might be the answer for you! CBD is a non-psychoactive substance derived from the cannabis plant. It’s the calming part …. Not the “let’s get wrecked” part. Studies have shown that “cannabidiol seems to prevent the breakdown of the chemical that affects mood, pain, and mental function in the brain.” CBD occurs naturally in cannabis, found in the flowers, seeds, and stalk of cannabis plants, one of 400 compounds that make up cannabis sativa. It can be easily extracted from both marijuana and hemp cannabis plants. The difference between these two plants is the THC level… in marijuana, its high (see what we did there?) and in hemp-derived CBD, there are only trace amounts of THC. Hemp-derived CDB is currently legal in the state of Florida, and nationwide. Ingestible CBD comes in many forms including oils, capsules, candies, vape pens and more. And if you’re unsure where you can buy it in Brevard County, Fairvilla Boutique’s got you covered. Earlier this year, Fairvilla Boutique began carrying products from Cannabidiol Life, which is a Florida-based company (keeping it all local for y’all!). The products range from gummies (that

taste DELICIOUS) to vape pens in two flavors (Strawberries and Cream and Watermelon Ice Balls) to CBD oil for both humans and ANIMALS! All of the Cannabidiol Life products are 100% natural and made from broad spectrum/ whole plant hemp extract oil. I’m gonna get a little honest with you here and talk about my personal experience with these products. Like many people nowadays, I was suffering from anxiety. When Fairvilla brought Cannabidiol Life products into the stores, I bought some CBD oil to see if it would be of any help. It 100% was. My loud anxiety was turned down from about an 11 to a very manageable 3. In fact, now I notice if I forget to take my oil in the morning. Of course, you should speak to your physician before starting this or any other dietary supplement. What can CBD can do for your pets, you might ask? Well, research shows that CBD oils help dogs with pain, anxiety, unwarranted aggression, digestive issues and more. Pretty much the same things as it does for a human. Cats can benefit as well! If you’re interested in seeing what CBD can do for you, visit Fairvilla Boutique at 6103 N. Atlantic Avenue in Cape Canaveral, to check out our selection of CBD products and, of course, all of your sexual health and wellness products.

Hot Sauce Boss

About 10 years ago I met Hot Sauce guru Leo McInnis at the Cocoa Beach Flea Market, and he turned me on to his White Habanero Hot Sauce, grown from the rare White Peruvian Habanero. He took the time to explain to me the complexities of the sauce using all natural ingredients as opposed to those who use a chemical reaction to make their sauce appear white. He even mailed me a pod. We stayed in touch all of these years and trade stuff like rubs, sauce, seeds, peppers, etc. Little did I know that Leo is actually a big player on the Nation’s Hot Pepper stage, hanging with some of the Kingpins like Johnny Scoville, Ron Beck, Vic Clinco, and others. I got to sit down and talk with Leo about his Company, Smoking Tongues Hot Sauce, and how he got to be a boss of the sauce. Leo’s favorite pepper right now is the Red Trinidad Moruga Scorpion. His love for heat started as a child and in the past 12 years he has progressed to making his own hot sauce and growing some of the most deadliest peppers known to man, heat-wise. He learns from buying hot sauce from other fine hot sauce crafters. Originally from Lynn Massachusetts, Leo moved to Florida in 2004 to get away from the snow. He says the mistake many people make when trying to grow peppers is a lack of patience, bad maintenance, and overwatering. Here in town he says his biggest problems growing are bugs and other pests, and one must be very diligent to eradicate them from your garden safely. To grow peppers you must have good soil and nutrients. It is best to start small with just a few varieties and then branch out when you get comfortable, he continues. Leo says if you want to make your own hot sauce just look up some recipes and start out with small batches, that way if it’s bad you won’t feel so bad when you throw it out! Before Irma, Leo had a house surrounded by hedges that were actually superhot pepper plants. Then destruction. How did he make lemonade from lemons? “Ugly Irma Hot Sauce came from that hurricane. I Picked about 6 pounds of peppers off the ground. I made a green super-hot pepper sauce with tomatillos and sweet onion, and a hot pepper seasoning with the some of the ingredients from the hot sauce in a dried seasoning”. Leo says in the future he hopes to continue to learn and expand his knowledge base of hot peppers and keep spreading the love. According to Leo, the prime growing season in Brevard County is March to October, and he starts his seeds in November and December. Leo sells plants, sauces, and rubs. No need to leave town when we have our own Hot Sauce Guru right down the street. He’s like the Ric Flair of Hot Sauce. Wooooooo! 34

KEEP FLORIDA WEIRD

12 Florida Laws EVERYONE should know….right? Florida is a weird state, on this we can all agree. Thankfully, random acts of shenanigans have been kept to a dull roar partly due to legislators who have ordained a handful of strange laws which are either still relevant, or were never overturned; they remain active in the books to this day. 1. Bring out the halter tops boys. Men are not allowed in public wearing a strapless dress. 2. In Miami, you could face up to 30 days in jail for selling our state’s beloved fruit on a sidewalk. Orange you glad we told you? 3. Listen up Satellite Beach, whether it be wet OR dry, liquid latex may NOT be worn as clothing. Period. 4. Ladies, are you single and looking to have some fun? Well, unless your wish is to be arrested, fined and imprisoned, you better not go parachuting on a Sunday. 5. No matter the time of the day, if you post your elephant up at a meter, just like an automobile, the parking fee must be paid. 6. Attention lovers! All Florida residents must comply, under no circumstance

is it legal to make love in any other position than missionary. P.S. oral sex is ALSO illegal. We will be watching. 7. State law specifically prohibits - unless you’re prepared to be charged with a second degree misdemeanor - any unnatural act. Good luck figuring that one out. 8. Florida’s legislation will not stand for anyone who “annoys the community, or corrupts the public’s morale”. There are no guidelines as to what such acts are, however we’re sure we committed at least five just this weekend alone. May the odds be ever in your favor. 9. On Thursdays, after 6pm, clench those cheeks and say no to beans, because it is very much illegal to fart in public. 10. Butterfingers, restaurant servers, and disgruntled housewives, check yourselves. If you break more than three dishes a day,YOU’RE OUTTA HERE! 11. Listen up Daytona, trash cans have it bad enough, so please, you must understand, it is 100% illegal to molest one. They have feelings too. 12. Don’t even THINK about showering naked. That’s an offense. APRIL 2019

HOROSCOPES Aries Mar 21 - Apr 19 You have a bit of a roller coaster ride heading your way Aries. Your body chemistry is likely to be easily shook by many different elements. Don’t let that stop you from living but take heed of doing more than you can handle. For you, less of what you’re used to, is more. This is the best time for you to begin something new, you will be supported by the universe and after the theme ark ride of life is over, you will succeed.

Taurus Apr 20 - May 20 Taurus, you are in much need of more love. Place emphasis on your health, pets, and the things that get tossed to the waste side because of work responsibility. Though we think it impossible, you have to cut down on your to-dos and get yourself more rest and sunshine. Release that ball of stress, think outside the box and reach out to those old friends you have been blessed with.

Gemini May 21 - Jun 20 Something has been making you uneasy Gemini. You have had more on your plate to eat, with your hands tied behind your back, and when you finally do finish, you’re told there’s no dessert to award your hard work. Your stomach is still empty, and so is your soul. Though financial stability is a hope we all have, it won’t satisfy your true needs. Pursue your hopes and wishes, redefine your values and never be hungry again.

Cancer Jun 21 - Jul 20 Spring break takes no pity on you this month Cancer. This is a time of increased recognition, but not without hard work. Have a plan, make a schedule, stay involved in obstacles along the way and you will overcome them all. If you need good reasons to stick through it all, keep in mind that universe is rooting for you to succeed. So do your due diligence, and enjoy the outcome.

Leo Jul 23 - Aug 22 Karma knows no sign Leo. The constant, quick sweep of dirt under your dens rug is now big enough to be used as an ottoman. There are to be no more rainy days to hide behind, the sun will shine bright through your windows and your refusal to fix problems will be revealed. The option is yours, continue to put it off and let the bittersweet universe leaf blow it around, or, simply put, pick up your own shit.

Virgo Aug 23 - Sep 22 Go for it Virgo! Start a new business, create a new project, find a new romance (which is a project in itself) Whatever you decide to begin, know that it will come to fruition. The only advice you may need to hear is to watch out for over committing yourself out of

excitement. The changes coming your way are bountiful, and so it the attainment of them all.

Libra Sep 23 - Oct 22

CROSSWORD

SURFING - THEN Surfing Then and Now 1

2

The love bugs have hatched, and you seem to be under attack, Libra. There is a big emphasis on your relationship status this month. If you’re one of those newly emerged lovers, be hopeful, this is your time to thrive and develop something wonderful. For those who have had their ass connected to another for sometime, now is the time to stop being such a pest and help your other half to remember why they chose you.

Scorpio

Sagittarius Nov 22 - Dec 21 Stop tucking your tail Sagittarius. Don’t allow fears, insecurities or disappointments from the past keep you from finding your golden egg, little bunny. What you’re searching for isn’t far out of reach. Bounce back into action and claim what’s rightfully yours- peace of mind.

Capricorn

Dec 22- Jan 19

You’re on your way to being April’s fool, Capricorn. Your “realistic” point of view is quickly becoming a pessimistic attitude to your peers. If you don’t change your tune, you will soon find yourself to be the “dingdong” to everyone’s ditch, the other half of someone’s whit and the ass end of every joke.

Aquarius Jan 20 - Feb 18 Aquarius, put your running shoes on and maybe a sweat band as well. You have a full extrahour of sunlight worth of to-dos on your hands. If you thought March was non-stop, you may need an upper much stronger than a cup of Joe to keep up with April. But don’t fret, it won’t last much longer, and you’ll be able to enjoy 420 with the rest of those “hoodlums”.and not just through the virtual, double-tapped world we live in.

Pisces Feb 19 - Mar 20 Your bee hive is sweet, thick and full honey, much like your pockets Pisces. YOu have worked hard to pick pollen from the perfect flower, and your co-worker bees appreciate it. The blessings will continue through this month as well, but if you forget your duties, things can and will get sticky.

Oct 23 - Nov 21

This year has been quite restless and emotional for you, hasn’t it, Scorpio? As tasty as those “sentimental” ice cream sundaes may taste, they are just adding to the heaviness on your heart. Focus a little more on your physical health, even the smallest steps are a move in the right direction. You will soon see that sometimes, the things you do (or in this case, eat) to feel better can be just as harmful as the people around you.

NERVOUS SYSTEM MUTTCREW IDENTITY

ARE YOU OFFENDED YET?

ERIC LINDELL

HANKS MARTIN

One thing I was promised a year ago was that the current administration in the White House would inspire a lot of good Punk Rock, and this CD does not disappoint. Lots of fast guitar (Justin) and fast drums (Mikey) combined with Crustin’s soothing vocals bring this Punk Rock quartet together nicely. Lordy aka Quesi Uddin Manitou does an incredible job on the bass as well. One thing I really like on this disc is it has that old school Punk Rock feel when the guy keeps saying the same line over and over repeatedly after the song is done. On “Rinse of a Thousand Pills” he ends with repeatedly saying “There’s nothing left, there’s nothing left…”. Good fast hard-driving Punk and all of the songs are short, quick, and to the point. They make you want to just get in the pit and start smashing. Joey Jr, age 12, says “I like this” and sister Ariel, 13, says “I like it but it’s giving me a headache. We should listen to this more often”. If you love oldschool Punk Rock and I know you do, this is a group you will want to get to know. That way the next time you are in line for gas and some dummy doesn’t know how to work the credit card machine, you can just break out into a mosh pit in the line at Circle K, scream “Anarchy in the UK” real loud, and do your best Johnny Rotten impersonation. Just hope that Marky Ramone doesn’t shut you down with Richard Hell references. Excellent CD!

Another great Punk Rock release to start your summer off. Muttcrew goes hard and doesn’t care what you think. Funny, they start off with a cover of the King of the Hill themesong but then go straight into a very politically oriented tirade that is at odds with nationalism, patriotism, republicanism, conservatism, and every other ism. And I love every minute of this CD. But I can’t play this one around the kids. In fact, I had to ask frontman Cory Bayer (Guitar,Vocals) for a PG version of the cover as the real cover is too risqué even for this cuttingedge mag. Nevertheless, this NY hardcore punk band keeps alive the spirit of NY Punk from days of old as they play fast, loud, and hard with Joey Medwig tearing the skins off of the drums. I like that they play some weird recorded stuff at the end of some of the songs after the music is done, again with that old-school Punk Rock flair. And hey, who doesn’t love some good-ole Punk Rock? “Redneck Holocaust” starts out sounding like an Irish jig and then goes into a variant that has great guitar and some nice raspy vocals. “American Flag” rips into the current climate of the country and lead singer Cory’s disdain for flag-worship. Bassist AJ Sciandra does a good job keeping up with the rest of the band as they go from one sweet Punk Rock jam to another. All the songs on this CD are 2 minutes or less, the way Punk is supposed to be, quick, fast, hard, and to the point. I could listen to this CD all day.

This is one of the best Blues CDs I have heard in a long time. One that I left in my car CD player for weeks. Lindell is a master storyteller as he evokes considerable emotion and thought in the listener. This CD was recorded in Bogalusa Louisiana and Lindell plays just about everything on the recording—guitar, bass, keyboards, organ, and harmonica. Lindell combines rock and swampy music with country and soul to produce an excellent piece of work. The song “Grandpaw Jim” stirs up images in me of my own son, as he compares his son to his Great Grandpaw and says he is big as a mountain but soft as the wind. Grandpaw never had a coarse word about anyone. Great guitar on this song just has you drifting away. In “Sun Don’t Shine” he has a memorable lyric saying that “the sun don’t shine on the same dogs ass everyday” which if you think about will make you realize hard times will pass. Then he says he was always “ready to burn one with Willie right before I play”…dang Blues Boy Willie coming at me again! In “Big Horse” he gets his wawa pedal going and gets funky. “Pat West” is a sad song that will have you reminiscing about your childhood, riding on your friends handlebars. Great CD. Go get it!

Hanks Martin has a nice release here. Hank does double duty as a country musician as well as a bluesman, just not at the same time. This release has a smoky barroom fell to it. Hank plays on all of the tracks on this disc of all original songs. Hank says he started playing on February 9th , 1964 when he saw the Beatles play on Ed Sullivan and he asked his Dad to show him some guitar chords. Well Dad did a heck of a job because this barn-burner CD exemplifies Hanks musical influences of Stevie Ray, Waylon, Merle, Roy Orbison, and Johnny Rivers. Speaking of Roy, Hanks does a nice tribute to him on “Middle of the Night” as he laments Orbison’s passing and the big hole it left in the industry and in his heart. “One Eye Open” is one of them Blues songs where he is singing about his shady woman who he has to deadbolt out of the house. Smooth guitar pairs well with Hanks vocals as he tells stories to make you think of the good and bad sides of love and life. In “Guitar Blues” he does some fine pickin’ and pluckin’ and says he doesn’t want to hear about your troubles because he has his own to worry about. At least he changes his strings every year whether they need it or not! Another great CD check it out!
