Fight for Zero What is Fight For Zero? Fight For Zero is a non-profit organization dedicated to taking action to ensure a healthier, more sustainable future for Florida communities. We strive to minimize toxic exposure and want to ensure that cities across Florida are leading the way toward a healthier tomorrow for young children, expectant moms, and everyone who lives here. We encourage, inform, inspire, unlock education, and invest directly into communities affected by harmful toxins and illness. The only acceptable level of pollutants in our environment should be zero, but what is the reality that Fight For Zero has discovered? Through our mission to establish zero contaminates in the environment, we uncovered that this isn’t a newfound desire for community members today. These findings seemingly indicate that 10

the government has worked harder to suppress theses issues rather than stand alongside its communities concerns. We also discovered that the way the laws are currently written do not protect us; new laws to protect ecosystems are needed.

one wants bad water or poor health. This is something that we can all come together and agree on. By uniting communities and state leaders, Florida has the potential to becoming a significant leader in these issues happening across the nation.

How can individual residents make an impact in their local community?

How can we test our water at home, workplace, or in our children’s school?

By getting involved, using their voices, showing up to community meetings, writing their local officials, and not being afraid to talk about the issues.

Through government grants, local funding opportunities, through our non-profit organization, and you can also start with something as simple as a kit from your local home improvement store. If you are wanting to test for contaminates such as PFAS or GenX we recommend using a certified lab. Make sure you do your due diligence to ensure that they are a quality provider.

What are ways to make a larger impact in the state of Florida? We can make a larger impact in the state of Florida by taking personal responsibility for how we are negatively affecting the environment, and reaching out to state representatives to encourage tougher regulations. No-

What is the end goal for Fight For Zero, and what progress has been made so far? Until we stop producing industrial toxic waste or polluting our waterways fighting for zero contaminates is something that will always be prevalent. It’s a continuous fight for more accountability to lessen the exposure to toxins polluting the environment which is impacting our ecosystems and human health.

Skilled Labor

Whitney Bailey

When Beachside Media asked me to be featured for this skilled labor segment they sent me a nice Q & A that I was supposed to follow but I really like to modify things and make my own rules and this is no exception. My name is Whitney, I am a professional piercer and jewelry stylist. My journey as a piercer started with an apprenticeship in 2011 in Titusville and shortly after I joined the crew at Endless Summer in 2012 (shout out to Mark Longenecker!) Following my apprenticeship I’ve stayed active 12

in the piercing community and regularly attend the Annual Association of Professional Piercers Seminar in Las Vegas for continuing education. I now run a small business inside of Endless Summer Tattoo specializing in safe piercing procedures with implant grade body jewelry. Our piercings are entirely disposable meaning all of our tools, medical supplies, and needles are only used once. We are currently the only piercing studio in Brevard county offering this fully disposable experience.

PET of the Month WOOF WOOF HURRAY!

My name is Rocco, I am a senior chihuahua, a sensei chi if you please. Originally from the mainland, my first mom had to surrender me to the SPCA of North Brevard landing me in Titusville. Now I am a Beachside Resident living on the beach and snuggling on hammocks under the palm trees. I was a very sad chi in the shelter and often screamed but I LOVED the humans met while I was there. They made sure I was properly snuggled, ate lots of snacks, and had plenty of frolicing outside until finding my furever home.

I

While my paws were off the streets and temporarily behind bars I made a human friend named Allison. She works in the intake department of the SPCA and is so warm and welcoming that you immediately want to lick her face all over, all the other dogs love her so much too and they lick also lick her face. The cats really love her as well but this isn’t about feline feelings, this is for my dogs. Anyways, Allison has human friends too not just the cats and dogs. Some of her friends came for a visit to the SPCA to take videos of an animal they were sponsoring. The SPCA lets humans sponsor animals if they want in an effort to help them find homes. These nice ladies paid for a cat and a dog to be rehomed so that all the new moms have to do is go adopt them, for absolutely free! So while they were in the shelter one of Allison’s friends Raelene mentioned that she had seen me, sensei chi, on the SPCA website! Allison brought the friends outside to meet me and they both instantly saw how handsome I was. After a small debate about who would get to snuggle me, Raelene’s friend Whitney said that she would foster me. Allison and Raelene are no newbs to fostering but this was Whitney’s first time. They made sure my new temporary mom was prepared to take me in and set us up for success. After taking me home to meet the other animals that call her Mommy, Whitney knew I was a perfect fit for our family. After a few weeks of blanket snuggles, warm walks on the beach, and relaxing swings in the hammocks we adventured back to Titusville to make my adoption official. While I was there I even got to lick Allison again!! Now that I am settled in I have a best friend named Molly, who is also a senior chi but there can be only one sensei. We also have a lab brother and border collie sister. Some people say we are a foster fail but I don’t think so. Dad says we can’t foster any more animals because Mom will keep them, so mom says she will just sponsor more snoots instead of bringing them home. Allison wanted me to tell other snoot lovers that they can view pets that need homes online at SPCANORTHBREVARD.COM Rocco Taco

Ina Forsman

Saddle Creek

Been Meaning To Tell You

2018 Sampler

Ruf Records knocks it out of the park with this release by the very talented Ina Forsman. The opening track is quite misleading as a very slow song starts off this CD but quickly gives way to Forsman’s incredibly talented take on Blues, Funk, and Soul. This CD is really bumpin’. Great Bass Guitar by Chris Maresh compliments the funky Wawa pedal and lead Guitar. A great Brass section only adds to the mix as the CD goes from one funky jam to the next without missing a beat. This Finnish Beauty will surprise you with her vocal prowess, making it hard to believe that she didn’t grow up making etouffee in New Orleans in the back of grandmaw’s kitchen. All songs on this CD are written by Forsman, and they are a cut above what you are currently listening to. Her voice can go from sultry smoke-filled backroom with a dim light sexy, to an almost Adele-like sound that will make you wonder just how you haven’t heard of this very talented artist before now. At only 25 years of age, this Helsinki native will sweep you off of your feet with her beautiful voice and carry you away. Float on down to the record store and grab this baby and heat up your summer. inaforsman.com

I like going to record stores, especially real ones where the vinyl is dusty and they have a bunch of free CDs and stickers at the front like my man Barry Friedman does. So I grabbed this jewel, not knowing what to expect, and I was pleasantly surprised with some killer modern alternative stuff that left me wanting more. With bands like Big Thief, Tomberlin, Hand Habits, and Hop Along, this very modern-sounding collection of songs really intrigued me and got better the more I played it. Doing a little research it looks like these guys highlight a lot of indie artists and that is the stuff I am more drawn to. I really can float away on this disc as many of these songs have a late 1980s Cranberries and Pixies feel to them and that independent college alternative sound that is difficult to find sometimes but magnetic when it is attained. It reminds me of when I am traveling by car and scanning the local radio dial and come upon some college radio station on the far left-end of the dial playing some weird stuff that I am totally unfamiliar with and I listen to it until It fades out as I approach another state line. At times eerily familiar even though I have never heard of any of these artists or songs, I will seek Saddle Creek next time I am thumbing through the free stack up front. Check it out! Colin Linden and Luther Dickinson with The Tennessee Valentines

Vinyl Flashback Genre: Punk Rock

Amour

thebeachsideresident.com J U N E 2 0 1 9

An interesting collection of mostly classic oldies done in a modern retro sound punctuates this great CD as Linden and Dickinson put out one heck of a disc in Amour. Bluesmaster JD Silvia cued me in via the Natchyo’ Grandma’s Blues Network Facebook Page that this release was on point, so I had to delve deeper into the sound they were throwin’ down (facebook.com/ natchyograndmasbluesnetwork). This is some slow, twangy, smooth material right here. Most of these songs are all classics in their own right, from Jimmy Reed to Kris Kristofferson. But Linden and Dickerson give them quite a twist. And these Tennessee Valentines are no slouch either, with Fats Kaplan busting bad on the violin and accordion and Kevin McKendree tickling the ivories like they were both born with them in their hands. The old standard ‘Crazy Arms” gets a modern retro remake with some good twangy strings backed by great piano work. This is a great disc to throw on when you are chilling in the yard lying in the hammock, or when you are on a long road trip with the windows down and a little bit of sweat on your brow. Ruby Amanfu does a sultry job squeezing all the emotion out of “For the Good Times”, a great slow jam to dance with your woman by the fire after everyone else is asleep. Grab this baby and feel the love! Amour! stonyplainrecords.com

We’re The Meatmen and You Suck by The Meatmen I would like to kick off this new segment of Vinyl Flashback by presenting one of my favorite pieces of Vinyl in History, this Epic by Tesco Vee and the Meatmen. One of my greatest possessions that I hold dear, I stumbled across this gem in 1983 due to being intrigued by the cover. The simplistic raw brutality of the drawing encompasses everything I ever wanted out of Punk Rock. Although the Meatcrew is not well known outside of Punk Rock circles, this platter has enough energy to swallow 100 Green Days and still keep going. Luckily I had the chance to see the Meatcrew live not once but twice, with a house full of Weenbags, as Tesco calls them, and mosh til I could take no more. Tesco calls out all that sucks and is lame in the world, including many topics that in 2019 might be considered not actually politically correct. But what would you expect from a guy who performs with a replica of the tip of the male reproductive organ as a hat? One side live and the other the Blood Sausage EP, this masterpiece can only be matched by the 1988 “We’re The Meatmen and You Still Suck”. Go get them both. the-meatmen.com

LOCAL SCRIBE

By Dr. Margaret M. Steciuk, PMP

margaret@mpmconsultants.biz

Full Circle My friend has an 11 year old daughter, cute as a button, everyone calls her “LaLa”. They were with me the other day when i stopped in to my studio for a moment. There was a copy of Traffic Technology International (June/ July 2013) on the top of a pile of magazines, with a photo montage of a skeleton and the title “Give Death the Day Off!” That caught LaLa’s eye and she asked what it meant. I pointed to the book cases full of literature on transportation and explained that I had been working for many years to make travel safer in our world, and that transportation planning was based on trying to give death the day off. She accepted that as an answer. Having to answer the question made me stop 18

and think, again, as we enter into a new phase of transportation. I’ve always been a fan of automation, and intelligent transportation systems (the marriage of information technology and transportation). We seem to be sliding off a steep cliff right now though, because there is now a driving force in transportation that is a bit untraditional: market forces. Of course the markets have always driven transportation and evolution of travel, as the first bicycle did, or the advance of air travel over ground travel. But we are entering into a new era where our somewhat centralized concept of governmental control over the shape of the infrastructure is being totally challenged. Private sector corporations are in the lead on major developments in the quickly advancing

thebeachsideresident.com J U N E 2 0 1 9

automated vehicle markets. all one needs to do is surf the internet for a few moments to see that Google, Uber, Mercedes Benz, etc. (I could go on with names) are all poised to capture the flag on a virtual hill. Like it or not, your mode of transportation will be mechanized. As a planner who began with pedestrian planning, forged in the fires of Arcosanti, I never did escape thinking it possible to build the ultimate walkable city. Recently a slur of pedestrian crosswalks were constructed on A1A, our local boulevard/ tunnel (not unlike the main thoroughfare across Staten Island, or 95 through the swamplands, take your pick of examples of similar thoroughfares). The Florida DOT had good intentions no doubt, and are trying to accommodate

pedestrians, however, pedestrian planning 101 tells us - as Dan Burden - a Florida Pedestrian Planner has told us over & over gain, you can’t train pedestrians. They will go where it is shortest and easiest, so why would FDOT not take a second to observe pedestrian behavior at each of these crosswalk locations? Many crosswalks are just a few feet off from heavily traveled pedestrian corridors, and if a minor adjustment to the exact location had been made, there would be a much larger level of adoption among the crosswalk users, and a higher level of success for vehicles in anticipation of pedestrians using time worn paths. With automated travel just moments away, I would feel more comfortable knowing we had

good planning tools at our disposal and that we were actually using them. The best of these tools are human minds, able to observe, calculate, and plan for the future. The next generation of transportation planners will need to have a computer science degree, not a geography degree. Let’s hope that LaLa’s generation can develop some methods for integrating human powered thinking with the ultimate automated answer to all of our mobility issues.

MONEYTALK By Steve Hauser

Fees and Random Rants To make a good impression, an advisor takes his potential customer down to the local marina. He points to a yacht and says “This one’s mine”. He gestures further down at a bigger boat and then a monster on the end and proudly announces “There’s my managers boat and our directors power yacht”. Clearly impressed, the potential customer asks “Where are your clients boats?”. Some jokes are funny because they’re true. This one is sad because it’s based on truth. Advisors who work through banks, insurance companies and big brokerage firms do not build wealth. They feed off it. If they’re telling you what to buy and you really don’t understand, that should be a huge warning flag. There’s nothing wrong with asking questions to understand your financial security. One last thing on sales, avoid annuities, loaded mutual funds, reverse mortgages and precious metals from TV ads. If you already have one or more of these don’t rush to sell. It might cost you even more to get out. Get independent help. I’ll leave more information and specifics on my website. ‘nuff said. This months column marks a turning point in our discussion. We have covered the markets and various investment types then built a typical portfolio using the asset allocation model. In short...the way it should be done. In future issues, we’ll dive into the way it shouldn’t be done. I’m specifically referring to day trading, charting and options. Better you learn about it here than from someone trying to sell you something. Send questions and comments to: spacecoastmoneytalk@gmail.com. INQUIRE OF FURSEY Dear Fursey,

Dear Fursey,

I can’t get any respect from the guys in the lineup at 1st Peak or Picnic Tables. Everyone calls me a belly-button-boarder and runs over me with their surfboards. Even my girl left me for a longboarder with a bigger stick. I’ve been boogying since kindergarten and consider myself pretty proficient at it. What can I do to get respect from the crew and the ladies? Thanx, DVO Bob

My woman started this Keto diet a while back and she has developed an unsightly aroma, I believe it is referred to as “Keto Crotch”. Now it seems whenever we go to the beach all of the fishermen are following her around in a trance, and all of the neighborhood cats seem to keep a trail behind her. I don’t want to hurt her feelings because she is way down from her previous weight of 380 lbs and she’s starting to look good, but I can keep holding my breath. Keep this between you and me. Jessica A’s man, Cocoa Beach

Dear Spongebob, You are a grown man now, it is time to put away the pool toys and get a real surfboard. Otherwise you will just be a speedbump on the wave of life for the rest of your miserable existence, which hopefully won’t be much longer. And please don’t paddle out at those spots anymore, it’s crowded enough.

20

Dear Stinkzilla, Hey you keep that to yourself, not between you and me ok? This reminds me of the old Blues Jam “What’s That? Smells Like Fish” by Blind Boy Fuller (1938). What you are describing, in my

thebeachsideresident.com J U N E 2 0 1 9

medical opinion, is Trimethylaminuria, better known as fish odor syndrome. Since you seem pleased with the other results of the diet plan, I can only suggest 2 options: one is a clothespin for your nose, and the other is a container of Febreeze. Combine the two, and you will be back in heaven in no time. Either that, or take a job at the fish market and then you won’t notice a thing. Dear Fursey, Every time I eat 20 or 30 Carolina Reaper Peppers I gotta run for the border. My posterior emits a substance that is a cross between napalm and hydrochloric acid and I can’t sit down for a week. What can I do? Leo, Port St. John. Dear Firepants, Do you see that white truck that drives around the neighborhood playing circus songs with

the pictures of ice cream on the side? That guy is your savior. Buy a dozen popsicles from that guy, and use those instead of toilet paper. You will be back in the driver’s seat in no time and no longer the butt of jokes. Assorted flavors and colors please. Dear Fursey: My man is an old War Vet who likes to skip dinner, get drunk, go up to Straw Hat, and start fights with whoever he feels is looking at him sideways. Anytime I ask him to cut it out, he says “You Talkin’ To Me?” and gives me that crazy look. Next thing you know he’s waddling home with broken ribs. What can I do to tell grandpaw the war is over? Carolina Billy’s Woman, Melbourne

Dear War Bride: Seems your man’s idea of a balanced diet is a Budweiser in each hand. Maybe you should take him to Church and have him try to find The Holy Spirit in some way besides mixing Vodka and Holy Water. That way he will spend more time searching for the G-Spot, and less time searching for Jack Daniels.

KEEP FLORIDA WEIRD “You don’t need a weather man To know which way the wind blows” (Bob Dylan) Hurricane season has officially started as of June 1st, dragging out until November 30th. NOAA predicts 9 to 15 named storms for 2019. Local residents are savages when it comes to evacuating their homes due to the threat of a hurricane. Be sure to stock up on batteries and not just booze. This is the Wild Wild Beachside. “I’ll eat my candy with pork and beans. Excuse my manners if I make a scene.” (Weezer) There was a bizarre home invasion in Clearwater, Florida. The suspect broke into a home and went straight for the kitchen. As the homeowner wakes up to glass breaking and chairs knocking over, they shockingly discover an eleven foot alligator. The suspect has been detained. “Even as I left Florida-Far enough, far enough-wasn’t far enough” (Modest Mouse) Who is Florida Man? Florida Man is the essence of outrageous crimes that you hear on the news, and as you hear the reporter speak of such chaos, you correctly assume it was a Florida man. BOARDRIDER OF MONTH Allen

RAW: Refinement...in all ways boards have just kept refining. Shape-wise we use to shape basic flat to V-bottoms however there are all kinds of compounded bottom contours in our shapes. Rails have also been refined heavily along with rockers. Materials in terms of fiberglass and other wovens have come a long way...you know when your looking back 30-40 years the list gets long.

FO’VB: How old were you when you started surfing, and where? What got you hooked? White, aka R.A.W., Robert Allen White, has been a driving force in the East Coast Surf Scene since the 1980s. When pin-wings were becoming squash-thrusters and twin-fins were becoming tres-hombres, R.A.W./Seasoned/Sea-Level Surfboards were at the forefront of modern Surfboard Design Evolution. I remember when my old homey John Pritchard rolled up with a beat-up orange Seasoned Thruster that had it’s tail completely broken off and re-attached back in 83/84, I could tell the shaper was on to something and way ahead of his time. Recently I had the chance to sit down with this humble legend and discuss surf design from then and now. Listen and learn peeps. For the purposes of this interview he will be referred to as R.A.W. because that’s how I first remember him as a grommet long before Big Daddy Kane borrowed the moniker. So I cued up Surf Punks “My Beach” on youtube in memory of Dennis Dragon RIP while I wrote this to remind me “you’re not a local” so read on… FO’VB: Its been a long time since the early 80’s, when I had my first Nectar thruster after Simon’s back to back wins, and you were pumping out the R.A.W. shapes with Smitty living upstairs and Brandt Martin working at the shop. While it is hard to pinpoint because there have been so many changes in the industry, what do you think is the number one improvement today’s boards have over those 80’s counterparts? 22

RAW: At seven I was getting pushed-in, at 8 I got my first board. My surfing actually mainly began in the Outer Banks where my family had a summer home. My sister was a lifeguard at the Tanarama Motel right next to Avalon Pier (pre-Delbert). As the years went on into the 60’s the guys would take me to different spots....5 mile post, Old Station, Kitty Hawk Pier. I also got to surf the Buxton lighthouse pre-groin, but to be honest it improved with the groins as I can recall. But I lived in Va. Beach and eventually started surfing there quite a bit. I remember surfing Rudee Inlet when there was barely any jetty. I recall it being like kiddy land all of us li’l punks were in there... FO’VB: Why is surfing better than anything else? RAW: Weeeellll it ain’t cause it’s easy...whether it’s your board, the place, the wave you’re always searching for your next best ride and how ur gonna get it...the ultimate life long journey. “The Quest”. FO’VB: How long have you been shaping boards? RAW: Been shaping for 43 years but I was hired on as a kid in a factory “East Side Surfboards” at 12 yrs old 50 yrs ago and have been involved since that time. FO’VB: Where is your factory at now and where are your boards being sold? RAW: I am now located in

thebeachsideresident.com J U N E 2 0 1 9

ALLEN WHITE

Cocoa Beach, Florida and still have some boards in some Carolina dealers ie: Natural Art Buxton, Ride the Wind Ocracoke, here in Florida at Ron Jon Surf Shop, & Foam Shapers. We occasionally get a hit for other retail outlets on the East Coast. Also at BOA Surfhouse in Panama City, Panama and Mokana Club in Cartegena Colombia. We also sell direct and ship anywhere at https://hubzter.com/profile/ allenwhitesurfboards/. FO’VB: How are 2019 longboards different from 1989 longboards? From 1969 longboards?

RAW: Well the short answer is variety....now-a-days I shape a fair percentage of traditional style longboards where we sort of disregard weight consciousness and concentrate on inertia-style design. On the other end I build a fair amount of super light longboards with compound-bottom contour hotrockers and hard down rails thru the hips, all with a variety of fin setups...then there is the ultrarefined in-between stuff that is what most people get. FO’VB: What does the future of surfboard design hold? Where do you see it going? R.A.W.: Who knows where it goes in the long term...these kids these days are so far down the road of performance. I think we knew that performance surfing was heading in sort of a gymnastic form. But now they have blended speed, power, flight, spin and twist all together... its mind blowing. The designs are very critical here and that too is mind blowing. At the same time we have a whole resurgence of retro-surfing that isn’t just 60’s longboarding but the 70’s are being addressed as well. So for me having come out of the 60’s and the 70’s having been my peak years surfing I love to look back and design from those memories. However I also embrace new school surfing and also love the challenges of meeting some of the young cat’s skill sets. So what’s next is hard

to predict but I’m sure I’ll be tested.....Also I should add that we are going to see a lot of technical data. Some will be good but surfers are going to have to shift thru a ton of marketing to find the real stuff....kinda like purchasing golf equipment. For sure though with all the man-made wave environments being introduced there will be data being recorded like no time we’ve seen before... FO’VB: Do you feel we will ever be able to make environmentally friendly surfboards, short from going back to wood? R.A.W. : For sure. We already can. There are a few reasons why you’re not seeing much of it yet but the biggest part is that the consumer isn’t ready yet. Right now they look different, or they are not built to cutting-edge performance standards, and last they’re more expensive and I don’t think your gonna get em built in Indo-China. So we can’t build them if they’re not buying them. FO’VB: Who is your biggest influence on shaping and surfing, from back in the day? R.A.W.: This is a tough one in that I truly consider myself a “mutt” with regard to shaping. At the same time I remember being so hungry for info that I was sponge-like as well. I suppose my shaping career started before even realizing I had the desire just getting custom boards built. Back then you would sorta hang in the shaping room and talk about what you want to do (how did I want to surf) and basically what kinda board I was looking for. With this the shapers would assemble the board as they spoke with you about the manifest that drives the design (I actually do this myself today with my customers). There was a wealth of foundation knowledge that came with this. The two main players in this were Kim Hickman (Eastside Surfboards in Virginia Beach) and Bill Frierson (Wave Riding Vehicles in VB).

All though I had been industrially involved from the late 60’s for me shaping started in ‘75 as I graduated high school in Virginia Beach. I got involved in a factory business with Marc Bischoff (all-around craftsman and our shaper at Offshore Days) who basically showed me the basics. After that it turned into a lot of who you spent time working with so in VB it was guys like Ronnie Mellott (RIP), Michael Doyle, and Marty Keesecker. Also in the beginning when I started my Seasoned Surfboard label Scott Busby in the Outer Banks glassed then and helped me a lot. Then in a pretty short period of time I moved to Central Florida and worked with a variety of shapers who all left me with little tricks of theirs that i would incorporate into my systematic approach to shape a board. There was Munson at Tabeling’s Creative Shaping Factory and Loehr, Roush and Price all at the Natural Art Factory. Since this was where I was just entering the production shaping part of my career I was really trying to fine tune my shaping technique. Now interestingly enough I would not be answering this question clearly if I didn’t mention two of my biggest influences Fred Grosskreutz (RIP) in regard to preparing a shape for glasswork (ie: fineshaping) and Pete Dooley in regard to design and signature features of my shapes. Neither of these guys were ever considered production shapers but both could shape a bitchin’ surfboard. Freddy was known as “one of the finest glassers in the world” and Pete one of the originators and owner of Natural Art Surfboards and a superfine craftsman in his own right.

Then of course there was all the Hawaiian influence from a slew of shapers: Brewer, Parrish, Angulo, Barnesfield, Arakawa etc....a ton of impressionable Cali Shapers too geeezze; in my era you couldn’t help but to be impressed with Greenough, G & S, Jacobs etc. man this list will never end really...like I said I was a sponge! How about back in VB: Bob White, Don Bennett, there’s no way that you couldn’t have been influenced by these guys if you met them and saw their work...hell I gotta stop but u get the drift. FO’VB: What’s a day in the life of Allen White like in 2019? R.A.W.: Ha wake up assess what’s workin and what’s not figure if I can fix it. Check the surf and decide what’s next.......surf, foam dust, or hang. Keeping life simple is my goal now. FO’VB: If you die tomorrow will your ghost haunt Juice Box George in your old shop? R.A.W.: Naaaaa George has got the reigns now. Leaving that place was very tough but you know the saying “life’s a journey” and I landed in a good place so far... FO’VB: If you had it all to do over again, would you be a corporate Wall Street kind of guy? R.A.W.: Never unless they send you back in opposite nature...”slow but thorough” is my motto and Wall Street ain’t putting up with that... FO’VB: What does the future hold for R.A.W.?

R.A.W.: Who knows 62 yrs and I haven’t ever been able to figure the future out yet, sooooo I’ll just grab that bull by the horns and ride till I die... Then, after a bit of reflection, R.A.W. reconsidered his response to the question FO’VB: Who is your biggest influence on shaping and surfing, from back in the day? R.A.W.: I want to try that one again from a different angle... ok New #9.... Influences to my shaping come from a variety of sources. In this perspective I consider myself a mutt in that I never really apprenticed under a mentor. For example techniques in my shaping approach often came from working with or around other shapers and I may have noted seeing them do things that I may have incorporated into my systematic method of shaping. However design came from everywhere: boards that I’ve owned or just ridden, custom board order experiences that I have had, seeing notable shapes at home and abroad, editorial, test pilots etc...in the world of shaping you’re always lookin’, listenin’ and feelin’ your way thru the times to design and shape your interpretation of the specific needs of your customers. Although I will say that when I was entering the world of production shaping there were two individuals that specifically influenced me in a way that got me here today . Late seventies and these guys were not even known as shapers (though both could shape a bitchin’ board in their time) there was Fred

Grosskteutz while working at Tabeling’s “Creative Shaping” factory taught me how to fine shape a board for glasswork. At the time boards were very often glassed with resin tints and the shape had to be well prepared to achieve a quality look at the end result....Freddy demanded that from us back then. Then there was Pete Dooley of “Natural Art Surfboards” who brought me on to shape “Sea Shapes”. I remember Pete would come in and lean on the door while I was shaping and just chat about all kinds of stuff (I always looked forward to those visits) but we would often discuss designs and the look of a shape and how if you’re shaping a set scaled to size that they would have to be uniform and have a very common appearance in the showroom. The guys at Natural Art were all very good at this... the color work, glassers, sanders etc. all the way thru the process this was priority. Pete taught me how to apply the manifesto to achieve this... These two guys still to this day weigh in on every shape I do. So hopefully look forward to a frequent surf-related column from this living legend in this periodical right here directly! Or else we may need to get Gary Smith (no relation) down here to these parts to give ole R.A.W. the “what fer!”. By Fursey O’Veebee
