Crystal Shawanda Voodoo Woman Crystal Shawanda grew up on the Wikwemikong reserve on an island in Ontario and was raised on Country music learning to sing and play guitar at a young age. Later she would hang out in the basement with her brother cranking Muddy Waters and B.B. King. She started performing Country when she was six and started getting paid gigs when she was 10, relentlessly playing every stage she could. Crystal’s dad was a truck driver and they started taking frequent trips to Nashville and she recorded her first album when she was 13. And that was a heck of a good start because “Voodoo Woman” is one hot ripper, from the opening beats of Willie Dixon’s “Wang Dang Doodle” to the ending “Smokestack Lightning Revisited”, Chrystal puts her heart and soul into this great release with fast tempo blues and sultry vocals. She slows it down with “I’d Rather Go Blind” in a smooth slow jam that melts the microphone like a popsicle in the August sun at Cocoa Beach. Some great covers on this release of Blues Legends such as Dixon, Willie Mae Thornton, and Koko Taylor as well as a number of original ballads. If you are looking for a great female Blues Artist then look no further than Native American Crystal Shwanda, who is a very talented performer on her way to the top. www.CrystalShawanda.co
Lonnie & Delinda Live from the Stage Yacht Rock Lovers Rejoice! If you have been anywhere around Cocoa Beach in the last 20+ years, you have undoubtedly seen Lonnie & Delinda a few times. Or a few dozen times. Or a hundred times. I have been lucky enough to see these cats at several locales around Cocoa Beach and Cape Canaveral over the years and they are as much a staple in this town as Orange Juice or the Space Shuttle. They are influenced by a wide variety of artists and styles such as Eric, Clapton, Bonnie Raitt, Bob Seger, Fleetwood Mac, Tom Petty, Island Reggae , Bob Marley, Jimmy Buffett, various 50s and 60s music artists, Elvis Presley, Patsy Cline, Roy Orbison, Diana Ross, The Pretenders, and many more. The great thing about Lonnie & Delinda is that no matter the weather, they always make you feel like you are in Margaritaville even if it’s a cold windy winter night. As artists they are very approachable and happy to chat with fans in between sets. This great CD does justice to covers of Buffet, Pretenders, Santana, Dire Straits, The Eagles, Sade, Roy Orbison, Fleetwood Mac, Bonnie Raitt, and others. Delinda has a great voice and Lonnie is no slouch on the guitar. Pick up this great gem of a release and keep it in your “go-to” pile for those winter blues. And if Lonnie & Delinda are appearing at a cocktail hour near you, post up and have a tequila sunrise for Ole Fursey. Just don’t forget your embroidered bathrobe. beachresortband.com
Drink Small Live at The Whig It is my honor to present to you, the great Drink Small. Drink Small is my favorite blues artist of all time. Albert King is 2nd. There is a three way tie for 3rd: Luther Allison, BB King, and Muddy Waters. This is my opinion and not everyone agrees with me. But Drink Small is the man and this is one of his best CDs even though the recording quality is not great. Recorded Live at a small club called The Whig in South Carolina, Drink lets it go XXX style with some good old dirty blues. Many of the songs and his comments are downright hilarious, but make no mistake about it Drink Small is a very talented guitar player. Hailing from Columbia SC and playing in that classic Piedmont Style, Drink can rip some blazing guitar riffs that burn as hot as his sassy tongue. Great jams like “Kept on Pushin’ It In” showcase Drink’s picking style and his knack for risqué lyrics that will have you grooving and laughing at the same time. I remember first hearing this with Blues Boy Willie and we just kept looking at each other, laughing, and shaking our heads in disbelief. Drink even goes into linguistics as he talks about the Geese women of Columbia that talk “Gullah Talk”, as Drink refers to it, a dialect local to the region. Drink pays tribute to the six major breeds of Coon Dogs as he mimics their barks with the guitar, and in “Too Much Water” he explains that there is too much water in the world for you to be smelling like you do. So go take a bath! That’s just a sample of how funky this is! So go get this jewel, or any Drink Small recording you can because he is almost 90 and ain’t gonna be around forever. musicmaker.org/artists/drinksmall August 2019
1980s RAP CD Flashback Boogie Down Productions Criminal Minded DJ Scott La Rock. Blastmaster KRS One. 2 names that would instill fear in any modern-day mumble rapper. That is, if they knew who the eff they were. Definitely in any true fan of the genre’s top-ten list, BDP and this CD in particular paved the way for a new era of rappers who began to shift away from rapping about tennis shoes and fat laces and toward a more conscious thought process about the world surrounding them. Unfortunately, Scott La Rock had his career cut short about the time this came out in 1987 by a very violent death. Two men were arrested and charged with his murder but were acquitted at the trial. Still this CD remains relevant in so many ways, from Scotts great mixes to KRS’s impeccable flow, this is a timeless classic for the ages. So many great cuts on this release, “South Bronx”, “Elementary”, Super-Hoe” and the classic “Dope Beat” where the guitar riff from AC/ DC’s “Back in Black” is looped masterfully and paired with KRS’s vocals in a mixture as smooth as a Bloody Mary on a hangover Sunday Morning. “The Bridge is Over”, “Poetry”, and “Criminal Minded” are just a few more all-time greats from this CD that make it a must-have for any 80s/90s Rap aficionado. krs-one.com By Fursey O’Veebee

BEACHSIDE GRANDPRIX
When I showed up to inter view John Kabboord, VP of Operations for B eachside Grand Prix, I had the notion that the whole event was going to be something ver y... inter view-y. We sat down in a quiet area and I leaned it to ask him a few questions. After we discussed the more obligator y inter view questions, he says to me, “Do you want to take a tour?” That’s when the fun started. The first leg of my inter view adventure started with the wildlife expert, Safari Todd. Todd has worked in various capacities at zoos, parks and private organizations throughout Central Florida, and his rap is as smooth as a game show host. He rattled off some facts on the dozens of reptiles, birds and various creatures milling about in their respective homes and asks, “Do you want to hold one?” I’m thinking to myself I’m going to hold a parrot for the camera or maybe even a snake. He proffers me a baby alligator, which by the way, is a sexy muscle of a creature and quite beautiful up close. Then he handed me a monster-sized tarantula. Like, the kind you see in scar y movies. He put it on my head, he propped it on my chest... My dearly beloved, Michael Guadagno - who joined me as my esteemed Beachside Media Photographer - nearly fainted. Safari Todd warned me to be careful not to drop the tarantula. It’s a nine year old tarantula actor who’s been featured in many big-name movies. Easy to understand as her shiny tarantula hair undulated like a B eyoncé video in the afternoon breeze. Many of the creatures housed there are, in fact, animal actors. Seriously, check his scene out. It’s a show-stopper. After which, Kabboord stepped in and suggested we head to the track. After my crew and I were given the perfunctor y instructions, warnings and track obstacle directions, I had only one question, “Is rubbing racing?” (Let’s just say it’s frowned upon.) We popped into our respective cars and off we went! The cars are super clean, they’re super quiet, and they’re super fast! You have the ability to navigate your game, not only by pressing the pedal and brake, but as you’re racing over the track there are little marquees throughout. By running over these in-laid marquees, often placed in challenging corners around the track, you can be awarded boosted speed and/or the ability to slow other riders down. Some will even slow you down. Around and around we all went. I, with bugs in my teeth, a shameless grin, and maniacal laughter, tore past my competitors with the master y of a woman racing to her massage appointment. Okay, real talk: the scener y is gorgeous above the treetops. It’s beautiful. It was a blazing hot Florida day, but the wind in my hair kept things interesting. The whole experience was completely thrilling. The mix of all of was exhilarating. I can see how people would get addicted.
Here’s what I learned about this beautiful new track, their zoomy go-carts, plus a few other particulars: There are two levels and it’s made from galvanized steel and a concrete track; mesh concrete. That’s really big stuff ! Mesh concrete poured on top of steel for retaining cables and providing extra safety. The track is approximately a thousand feet of action-packed fun. The track has a safety barrier system specifically designed for their carts. The carts are run on four batteries, which means you don’t have exhaust stinking up the place. The carts are digitized and can be easily managed from the pit. From there they can see the entire track. If someone is bumping or driving unsafe, they can be slowed down or even shut
off. There’s a guy who has a little wireless device that walks around sur veilling the races; he’s the “Commander”. He can instantly stop all the carts by pressing a button. Top speed is about 20 mph. It’s fast enough to get that “need for speed” fix. Individual riders run about $17, with packages available after that. There’s a private party room available for special events. It’s a totally rad space with tons of party potential; an excellent space to let the kids go nuts. The biological biome, or as I like to call it “The Gator Corral”, is home to dozens of baby gators. It’s a great space to visit and see the reptiles up
close and personal. They even have a caiman; a ver y serious looking fellow. The Power Up Karting game is designed to make a go kart experience more interactive and fun for the racers. Like video facing game Mario Karting, Power Up allows racers to gain powers by driving over targets in the track. Spread around the track are targets that light up and change colors, marked or painted targets small and large, and entire sections of the track that are marked that are used by to win powers, lose powers or affect racing performance.

On July 5, 2019 in Cape Canaveral, FL at Lincoln Street Beach, the Core Surf Core Board Shop put on a ‘Real 1960’S Log Contest.’ This is the vision by shop owner Dennis Griffin who wanted to have a Summer Surf Contest that featured vintage surfboards or “Logs” from the 1960’s or earlier He wanted to have an event that showcased these long and super heavy surfboards with giant fins or keels. They are known as “Logs” because of their enormous size that is from a historic era, which is long gone and often forgotten. Collectors ‘relish’ these boards. Most logs weigh 30 to 50 pound and are 9 to 10+ feet in length. A “Hot Dog” or “Hot Dogger” is what they called a surfer in the 1960’s that was really good at proudly showing off, or “Hot Dogging” their exceptional surfing skills. The “Hot Dogs” were surfing here. It was only $5 to enter too. The idea was simple: show up with your old “Log” and take on the best contemporary long boarders in Florida, and see who can win on these giant boards. This sounds pretty easy until you have to carry the board down to 16
the water and actually catch waves on it. If you didn’t have your own “log” you could draw straws and ride one of 5 “logs” provided by Core Surf Shop. The judging criterion was based on finding an overall winner and also rewarding the highest single wave score during the competition.

Florida. The semi finals did not disappoint although the tide began quickly draining out low. In the first semi final Saxon Wilson and Brent Russell met each other for the first time. Female stand out surfer Jessie Restivo of Satellite Beach, FL on a Hobie and also young “Hot Dogger” Sky Blumenfeld, 14, of Flagler Beach, FL on a classic Oceanside Nose Rider were in there too. Sky also known as “Turtle” won Best Cutback at a recent Joel Tudor Duct Tape Invitational Contest. This by far was the best heat of the event. Wilson and Russell handily advanced on to the finals. It seemed like every time that Saxon and Brent surfed the waves suddenly got better. Saxon won this semi final and Brent got 2nd. The major difference is that Saxon got the
better waves on the outside that pushed all the way thru to the inside and Brent had solid nose rides and maneuvers that were only on the inside sections. The second semi final included up and coming local threat Sebastian Baker from Cocoa Beach, FL on a weathered Hobie, Ryan Conklin from Flagler Beach, FL on a super long Hobie with “ Susie Cream Cheese “hand painted on the tail. Also in this heat were a very stylish Erica Peek from Cocoa Beach, FL on a vintage Abercrombie & Fitch, and Gary Karczewski from Playalinda Beach, FL riding a 1967 Hansen 50/50. Erica is Brent Russell’s wife. Sebastian Baker and Ryan Conklin caught a couple of slightly better waves in the rapidly dropping tide and windier beach

Food is medicine. It can be a fun treat, but at the end of the day the food we put in our body is essentially fuel and healing elements that help us function. If we are missing potassium, our heart will flutter and it can become dangerous. If you are deficient in vitamin D, your body will ache and depression kicks in. Low vitamin B can trigger anxiety, fatigue and nerve pain. We are not getting any younger and our youth is catching up with us. The modern day medicine cabinet and kitchen should be loaded with nature’s finest. Also, it doesn’t hurt to be knowledgeable in case the apocalypse happens. I have included a few herbs, flowers and nature’s finest and what they do. For more, visit the Blurbs on Herbs tab on my website. Ashwagandha An Ayurvedic herb that improves the way your body manages stress. It reduces cortisol levels, helping with anxiety and depression. This ancient root also increases concentration and energy levels. It has both anti-cancer and anti-inflammatory properties. Blue Vervain Blue Vervain soothes the nervous system, detoxification, reduces stress and depression, stimulates the liver, lowers inflammation and protects the immune system. Borage Also known as a starflower, Borage is great for arthritis, coughs, PMS and depression. This herb is also beneficial for hair and skin conditions. Carob Carob is rich in calcium, fiber and protein. It has a chocolate taste without caffeine. It has anti-diarrhea properties and is an excellent source of vitamins, antioxidants and minerals.

It helps with relaxation, menstrual pain, cold symptoms, mild skin issues and inflammation. Cinnamon Loaded with antioxidants, cinnamon is known to reduce the risk of heart disease by lowering cholesterol. It is anti-inflammatory and promoted brain health. It is anti-microbial, anti-cancer and helps with metabolism. Dandelion Leaf Dandelion is used for muscle aches, loss of appetite, gallstone pain, upset stomach, and joint pain. It can be used as a laxative and to increase urine production, which is why you see it in a lot of detox teas. It has been known as a liver detoxifier and is also loaded with vitamins and minerals, including iron, calcium, magnesium and potassium. Check out my herbal shop on Instagram @WildlingApothecaryUS
MONEYTALK
Options: Part 2 Last month, we looked at options and covered the basics. Time for some fun. Grab your tinfoil hat and galoshes. We are going on a dark journey. Rarely talked about, in back alleys it’s whispered only in hushed tones...shhh...time decay. All options have an expiration date. You have the right to exercise your option until that date. Time decay is simply time running out as that date draws near. Want a visual? Imagine a handful of sand. Imagine sand slipping through your fingers as you near the deadline. If the option expiration is a year away, it will have a lot of time value; if it expires in two days, not so much. Options are priced to fail. Based on the volatility of the stock and the amount of time to expiration, most options whither away worthless much like the handful of sand. What this means to you is, if you buy a call option because you’re sure XYZ stock price is going to soar, that expected bump is already priced into the option. If you’re still reading, it’s now safe to take off your hats. The bottom line is, it’s really hard to make money-buying options. It’s gambling. The stock not only has to move in the direction you think but it has to outpace the time erosion. Even if you’re right, you could still lose. Visual? Think jumping in a river and trying to swim upstream. If you read between the lines, you know where I’m going with this. If buying options is dangerous, what about selling options? There’s risk in everything. If you never trade options, that could be a good thing. However, if you do, why not let time erosion work in your favor? Think downstream. I will soon be hosting investment seminars at the Cocoa Beach Library. Check with them for time and date.

Reflections of a Little League Coach
Some of the best times in my life was when I coached little league, in Cocoa Beach, in the mid 80’s and early to mid 90’s. I loved baseball and played for West Virginia University (GO MOUNTAINEERS) and I loved being in the dugout with my teammates and the competition. When I was growing up and playing, I had the usual coaches that were fathers who had sons on the team, but there was two seasons when I was younger that were really special. My coaches were just guys who loved the game and had no relations with anyone on the team. We used to pile up in his station wagon and go to store for Slurpees and he treated us a like his kids. Fast forward to my coaching career, my first stint was with Bernard’s Surf and we had a really good team. I still see some of those guys around town: Sean O’Hare, the Townsend brothers Tommy and Pat, the Matchner brothers Robby and Randy, Danny Brewer and a few other characters. On Saturdays we used to invite kids from other teams to come to our practice and we would just play all day. We won the League Championship and I will always remember that when All Stars came around we got our uniforms and my assistant coach 22
Chris Muldoon (Who the kids loved) was able to fit into an extra large uniform. We were playing Eau Gallie, and in a tight game, we were on defense and there was a close call at the plate. It sure did look like our team played the play perfectly with our outfielder hitting the cutoff man and then he fired a perfect throw to the plate. It sure did look like the player from Eau Gallie was OUT! But the umpire called him safe and Chris Muldoon fired out of the dugout turned his hat around backwards and charged towards the ump. Chris liked to load up with a little Copenhagen so as he was chewing out the umpire I am sure a little spittle was fired. The umpire stepped away looked at me and yelled “COACH CONTROL YOUR PLAYER”, he was shocked when I told him that it was not a player but an assistant coach. Let’s just say Chris Muldoon got ejected and then had to attend a little anger management meeting the next morning of the tournament. My next stint was a few years later and this time I sponsored the team so technically I was the Sponsor, the owner, the general manager and the coach. I will never forget one year I went to the draft and was informed that we had a problem. It seemed

that the Cape Canaveral team did not have a coach and no one wanted to step up. Since I had 6 kids returning that were pretty good and I knew Cape Canaveral would let you practice at night (Cocoa Beach would not let you practice under the lights) I told the group of coaches and officials that if they let me take my kids to Cape Canaveral I would coach that team. At the time I drove one of those old man Lincoln Town cars. So every time we would practice I would leave work early and go pick up Matt Jiminez, David Aubrey, David Morgan, Alex Rojas, Allan Greenfield, and a kid named Tyler whose last name escapes me. We would cruise up A1A and honk at the tourist and wave the other way, for some reason the kids loved that stupid stunt. I had a bunch of great kids that played for me and we put a whupping on some teams from Merritt Island. I wasn’t easy on those kids and at times I probably pushed them pretty hard. There is one kid that will always stick out in my mind and his name was Kris Sana Hanneman. One year at the draft I had a pretty good team and needed to pick up a few more kids. At the draft I looked for the kids that WANTED to play and hustled so

when it got to the last pick I saw that Kris had not been picked and he was 12 years old. I did not think it was right for a kid who was 12 to play in the minors so I drafted him. He was far from the best kid and really struggled skill wise but there was something about how he ran around with a big smile on his face. After I drafted him I found out that he had NEVER played baseball but loved the game. At our very first practice I got there about 30 minutes early to get the field set up, the batting tees set up, etc. etc. Who was waiting for me but Sana Hanneman, he begged me to hit him some balls. This went on before practice and after practice and until I was exhausted. I played college baseball so a lot of time at the end of practice when we had the batting machine cranking on the field I would step in and hit. I would hit these towering fly balls out to the kids and Hanneman would run around like crazy and catch everything. At that time the Cocoa Beach little league field did not have a regulation fence in the outfield so home runs were hit by balls going in between the outfielders since the fence was too far away. Hanneman was unreal at cutting balls off that were hit in the mid-
dle or charging in and catching little bloop hits over the infielders. We won the championship so we got the chance to play in the county tournament and had to play Rockledge which was coached by one of my friends who I had played ball with. The big hitter for Rockledge came up and hit a towering home run to centerfield, Hannamen went after the ball, jumped the fence and3 wrestled the ball away from 2 kids who wanted a snow cone for returning the ball. Hannaman ran back onto the field and tried to throw the Rockledge hitter out at the plate. The coach looked at me and said “What the hell is he doing?”. I replied “That’s Kris Sana Hanneman, the secretary of defense!”. All he knew was to get the ball and get it into the infield. I know I have left some kids out like Geno Redden who played all 4 years with me, Mason Williams, Danny Collins, Jonathon Ballew, Tom Walker Jr, Jeff Mishler and a few others and my assistant coaches Maldoon, John Lingo, Bill Dowdell and Steve Childers. I really had some good times, so get out and help out, the kids will appreciate it , I know I did.

INQUIRE OF FURSEY Dear Fursey, My boyfriend and I have been together for 8 months. Recently, I discovered that he downloaded Grindr and created a profile. He has chatted and exchanged pics with guys but says he has never hooked up with anyone. Now he’s pissed that I went snooping on his phone and says being on Grindr isn’t “cheating”, that it’s just fantasy. Now all I wanna do is drink and forget about it. What do I do? Sheila Tequila in Palm Bay Dear Sheila, I know you are wondering why is it so hard for women to find men that are sensitive, caring, and good-looking? Because all of those men already have boyfriends. Your best bet is to keep on drinking, the German tourists will be here before you know it and Hans and Franz need a snuggle bunny after that cold German winter. Dear Fursey, My wife was cremated, as she had requested,
but she also asked that her ashes be spread far away to all of our old Cruise Ship Ports. This would require me to take some long and expensive trips. Would it be disrespectful not to accommodate that part of her request? Ashy Sarcophagus, Melbourne Dear Ash, Save yourself some time and money and sprinkle Hazel on the fire pit and smoke a Pork Butt. Spend your savings on gambling, liquor and cheap women. You can thank me later. Dear Fursey, My husband wants a threesome with my best friend and me. I’m shocked, he thinks it is no big deal. What do I do? Signed Old Prude, Satellite Beach Dear Old Prune, It is plain to see that your husband loves you very much, and can’t get enough of you. Since he knows there is only one you, he has got to settle for the next best thing… your best friend. This
can only enhance your relationship. But why stop there, invite over the babysitter, coworkers, old college roommates, whoever. If this bothers you, allow him to socialize while you go read a book. When he is done, make him a nice meal. Dear Fursey, My woman always hollers because I don’t put the toilet seat down. What can I do? Sherman, The Villages Dear Peabody, Maybe spend one second going out of your way to flick the toilet seat down in order to help her avoid the sad, soggy fate of accidentally falling in the toilet. If you are having problems remembering this, please feel free to print this article out and tape it to the inside of the toilet lid/ your face.
