Signs, Signs, Everywhere the Signs
CONTENT MANAGER Rachel Bilchak
All across Cocoa Beach there are signs being lowered this month due to a ten-year old sign ordinance coming into effect. Watching the Mai Tiki Market sign and others across the town come down gave me mixed feelings. I was sad to see these markers of days gone by being removed from the hotels and shops, yet I was happy to know this also marks the beginning of a new beachside. A few months ago my family and I were on a day trip at Disney’s Animal Kingdom. There I received a sign in the form of Sean McHugh, a caricature artist who was drawing our portraits. We were having the usual conversation: “What do you do? Where are you from?” That’s when I brought up Cocoa Beach. Sean immediately disclosed that he was upset with our little town and then launched into an explanation about how since childhood, this city has had a major impact on Sean’s life. When I asked him why, his response was surprising. “I Dream of Jeannie” was his answer. “So why are you upset with Cocoa Beach?” I asked him. Sean explained that upon moving to the Orlando area, he traveled to Cocoa Beach and was surprised that there weren’t any Jeannie stores or memorabilia that he could take home after making his pilgrimage to Jeannie’s hometown. He went so far as to tell me how he campaigned to have a statue of Jeannie put up here in Cocoa Beach. He got pretty close, too. This got me thinking of how it would be a great idea for The Beachside Resident to pay our respects to beachside icons of days gone by. From “I Dream of Jeannie” to digital renderings of the Starlite Motel, we are hoping this issue will inspire you to be reminded of the past while looking forward to the future. Happy 50th anniversary, Jeannie!

Will There Be A Salad Bar On Mars?
Florida Treasure Seekers Cash In
Astronaut Scott Kelly tweeted, “It was one small bite for man, one giant leap for #NASAVEGGIE and our #JourneytoMars. #YearInSpace.” ISS Astronauts Scott Kelly, Kimiya Yui and Kjell Lindgren munched the first space-farmed salad lettuce with a little Balsamic vinegar on August 10, 2015. The crop was produced in an aeroponic system called Veggie. The Veggie was created by NASA and Orbitec to maximize food production in a small space. The system is the first to produce any edible crop consumed by humans. VEG-01 experimental mission is to test the effectiveness of the Veggie equipment in space. The Veggie was sent to the International Space Station inside a Dragon capsule during a SpaceX resupply mission. The capsule was originally launched by SpaceX’s Falcon 9 rocket from Cape Canaveral Air Force Station last year. Grown in an open air, aeroponic garden without soil. Roots are contained and hydrated with a mist. The garden was specifically designed to counteract the effects of microgravity and the challenges of managing water and light sources. The first seeds were grown, harvested and analyzed for safety. The crops passed inspection. The astronauts were free to regrow the red romaine for consumption. Known as VEG-01 this experiments has other benefits as well. Water starved locations can learn new farming techniques. VEG01 represents humanity’s first steps toward sustainable living for earthlings everywhere.
Rare Spanish gold coins valued at $4.5 million were discovered off Vero Beach by treasure hunters last July. The team aboard the Su Capitana uncovered 350 coins. The coins were part of a shipment en route to the King of Spain back in 1715. Those ships never made it. 11 out of 12 Spanish galleons (ships), approximately 1,000 crew and most of the treasure were lost in a hurricane. Mashable presented a video capturing the moment the diver discovered the first coin. Filmed on July 31, 2015, the coin was found exactly 300 years to the day of the shipwrecks. Don’t grab your snorkels and metal detectors just yet. The salvage company 1715 Fleet-Queens Jewels, co-founded by Brent Brisben, captain of the Su Capitana, discovered the gold. The company acquired salvage rights of the sunken fleet. Which means anyone who finds treasure relating to these ships has to split the proceeds with the State of Florida and the salvage company as well. Brisben told Good Morning America he still believes there is 400 million worth of treasure still out there waiting to be discovered.

Wayback Machine Retro Money Saving Ideas By Nataleigh Palmer
My grandmother is nearly 90, a great dresser, and can put on a party for 50 without batting an eyelash. She knows how to pinch a penny and how to splurge on a nice vacation every couple of years. The Greatest Generation knows a lot of ways to save money. Here are a few gems that prove that trends come and go; but good ideas are timeless.
Envelope System

Ask your grandparents how they budgeted for household expenses. They probably used the Envelope method. After each paycheck, write down the amount of all of your bills. After the big bills are paid you organize everyday expenses by category. Food, gas, clothes, gifts for example. Then you set an amount you are allowed to spend for the week or month for each category and write it on each envelope. For example, you allot $100 for groceries for the week. If you run out of money before the week is up you have two choices. You can either raid your pantry or borrow from another envelope from a different category. Fear of running out of cash prevents you from overspending. It is also a physical way to track your budget. That ATM card slides like butter through the machine. But each dollar through your fingers reminds you that you still have a thirsty car to gas up.
Hobbies That Directly Pay You Back Years ago hobbies were different. Hobbies were things you enjoyed that also rewarded you directly. Gardeners loved to work in their yard. Then they enjoyed the cut flowers or vegetables. There’s a secondary monetary benefit that directly rewards the hobby. Tomato seeds planted and nurtured can be nearly free to cultivate and save money at the grocery store. Gardening, woodworking, and sewing reward you with a marketable skill as well. Scrapbooking, collecting (fill in the blank) or playing pool have advantages but don’t directly pay you back. Unless you’re a pool shark.
Capsule Wardrobe Susie Faux, owner of a London boutique called The Wardrobe is credited with inventing the capsule wardrobe. Capsule wardrobe is the theory of picking three colors that coordinate so that any combination will match. For example, you could choose a red, white and black palette. Any shirt, skirt, pant or dress combination will always match, taking the stress out of dressing. Avoid trends and focus on slowly acquiring wellmade classic items. The interchangeability of the clothes means you can always look good even on a small budget.
Horoscopes By Marie Moore

Venus goes direct in September. Your love life may get a bit interesting or even complicated. You’re intense and passionate when it comes to love. Mercury is in retrograde and the energy might not be right for lasting relationships, but hey there is nothing wrong with a little romance.
There is much better energy in regards to career and money this month. This is a great time to look for a new job or make some updates to stay on top of your game. Promises may be made to you but talk is cheap this month. Jupiter in your seventh can make you lucky in love from this month until next year.
Last month might of beat some of you up. Fortunately, this month brings better energy your way. Now that Venus is going direct there is so much going on this month. Hey, wait, slow your roll down though because you are not watching what you are doing. You tend to be a bit accident prone.
ARIES
Daily, weekly and monthly video horoscopes available online at mariemoorehoroscopes.com or youtube.com/#/user/mrsmoreful
LIBRA Old friends may want to reconnect with you this month. For some of you love is in the air. You could find love while out and about or meet that special someone on the dance floor. Thoughts of your future are coming up, especially in regards to career.
SCORPIO The beginning part of the month is beautiful for you. Things will be moving and popping. But when Mercury goes retrograde on 17th there will be nothing. What happened? Relax, things will resume their course soon.
SAGITTARIUS This month Saturn moves into your sign and will be there till 2017. Watch your emotional self with Saturn in the first house. Old situations may creep their way back into your life because of Mercury in retrograde. If you have an opportunity at second chances, think of how you would do things differently.
CAPRICORN Oh, Cappies. This month Pluto goes direct on the 24th. For some I feel that this month will be a game changer for you. The weight on your shoulders will finally be lifted and things will seem to go your way, especially where money is concerned.
AQUARIUS This is a busy month for you. Be careful of burning the candle at both ends. All eyes are on you this month and love is in the air. You can attract many interesting love situations your way, and your career seems to be on point too.
Your life is a soap opera this month. Lights, camera, action, drama! The “frenemies” are hovering, your exes and oh what’stheir-name-again are coming back out of the woodwork. Don’t worry too much though. Mercury is retrograde so it’s only temporary. Be careful with your career. There are a lot of changes taking place so go with the flow instead of trying to go against the current.
TAURUS Are you hiding out this month at home? I feel that you need to watch your spending this month when it comes to your creativity and DIY projects. Uh, oh, Mercury is in retrograde this month put an RE in front of anything you guys are doing or trying to do. Remember, anything new started during the retrograde might to have to be redone later.
GEMINI This month can be a very social time for you, especially with family. There’s great energy for some good flirting when Venus goes direct this month. You could be hearing from old friends wanting to say hello. Thoughts of moving or plans to move are coming up.
CANCER Cha-ching! This is a great time for money coming in but wait, Venus is going direct this month. Venus is a good working girl but once she gets some coin she quickly spends it. If you are on a beer budget with some Caviar dreams, Venus will definitely help you spend your money.
Marie Moore considers herself a professional student of mythology and mysticism and has been following her spiritual journey through the study of Kaballah and various other religions since the age of 8. She provides a workout for your soul, and while she cannot give you answers, she will show you the path toward enlightenment. Whether you choose to break free of your routine or not is up to you. She will also help you learn how to take care of others and be accountable for your own actions so that you may begin focusing on the complexities of your inner self. This is for entertainment purpose only, must be 18 years or older. Warning; these horoscopes are not sugar coated. They will tell it like it is, how it is, and how it can be. Only YOU can change the

Gardening Tips
Chia Pets By Nataleigh Palmer
Ch-Ch-Ch-Chia. The iconic houseplant with the funny name was introduced in 1982. This present made some gardener’s eyes roll but helped many children develop a love of gardening. Chia Pets are decorative terracotta pottery in the shape of famous characters from cartoons to people. Each Chia Pet has a series of grooves along the top of the pet depending on its shape. The gardener applies moistened seeds to the grooves and waits a week for the seeds to form a clover like cover. Chia Pets love humidity and need to be constantly watered. A clear plastic bag over the Chia Pet and a clear tray underneath helps keep it moist. They prefer sunlight through a window and need to be rotated daily to avoid one side growing faster than the other. After three weeks or so the Pet is done growing and you can remove and reseed. The thickness of the carpet of chia seeds depends on how often you water it and how much sunlight it receives. You can even eat your Chia Pets. Well, the sprouts and seeds anyways. Chia sprouts and chia seeds have long been known as an endurance food for athletes. It’s high in protein and omega-3 fatty acids. You can add it to milk and make a pudding, bake it into cookies or add it to bread crumbs to make a healthy baked chicken.

thebeachsideresident.com
S E PTE M B E R 2015
Chia can have some side effects, however. People taking blood thinners, have high triglycerides, allergies or other illnesses should talk to a doctor before consuming. You can even make your own Chia Pet with an old stuffed animal or plastic toy and a pair of old pantyhose. Chia seeds are available in the health food section of
the supermarket. The pantyhose provides a surface the chia can grip onto. If for example you wanted a chia carpet on the hood of an old Barbie car you would wrap a section of pantyhose around the hood. Then place chia seeds in water for 10 to 15 minutes. The seeds will swell into a jelly- like consistency that will be easy to add to any surface. You can also use small pottery or old
votive candle holders as long as you put enough soil to level the seeds at the rim of the container. Chia Pets are a fun, low cost way to get involved in gardening. This is the perfect gift for people who don’t think they have a green thumb. Since the turnover is quick they can’t blame themselves for the eventual chia death. The Pet can be re-sprouted in under a week, giving the reluctant gardener more opportunities and practice. There are a number of options from Hello Kitty to Chia Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtle available. This year there will be a new addition just in time for Halloween and perfect for Walking Dead fans: Chia Zombies

Recipe ofthe Month
Gettin’ Figgy With It By Samantha Deebel
This is the time of year for figs and they are so delicious! They can be eaten by themselves or in a salad, roasted or on a pizza. Here are three easy, quick ways to create fig dishes. Enjoy!
Fig Salad
Baked Figs
Use as much as you want of each ingredient for as many people you are serving.
Fresh figs cut into quarters Romaine lettuce Purple onion, sliced thin Green or yellow pears, cut into small chunks Raw goat cheese (garlic flavor is delicious), cut into chunks Walnuts, crumbled (you can also roast them in a cast iron skillet so they’re extra crunchy)
Mix all ingredients together. Use some of the walnuts to garnish and drizzle with a balsamic vinaigrette dressing for the best flavor combination.
6 figs 6 slices of pancetta 6 bay leaves Toothpicks
Wrap a slice of pancetta around each fig and secure it with a bay leaf with a toothpick. Place in a baking dish and bake for 20 minutes. Put on a plate and pour some of the cooking juices on top to serve.
Fig Pizza I use a flax and millet lavash for my pizza but you can use a pita bread or French bread. Spread some tomato paste on the bread. Slice some Brie (removing the wax part) and place it on the bread. Slice figs thinly and arrange over the cheese Add some thin sliced purple onion and chopped garlic. Sprinkle some pizza seasoning on top and pop it in the oven at 350 degrees until the cheese is all melted and the bread is crispy. Yum!

into it. Looked repulsive but apparently it’s what the customer liked because they were in more than once for the same drink. What, in your opinion, is the most overrated drink out there? It’s definitely Fireball. I think the company just made a bad batch of whiskey and tried to figure out a way to sell it and thought “Hey lets just throw cinnamon flavor in it! They’ll love it!” What is your own drink of choice? Bud Light and a shot of Jameson or three. Can you recommend a triedand-true hangover cure? Sleep through it if you’re able to. If not, you could try what my friend Glenn does and take hot and cold showers every half hour. I think it’s lame but hey maybe it will work for you. Which celebrity, living or dead, would you most like to serve in your bar?
When you go to The Pig & Whistle and sit down at the bar, Jennifer Harris wants you to be comfortable. She’s happy to either have a conversation or just provide a listening ear. Jen will pour all your favorite drinks, even cocktails made with salad dressing... Anything to make you feel right at home. Please give us a little background on yourself.
What might readers be surprised to know about you?
I was born and raised in Rockledge, Florida and have been working in hospitality since my early twenties. When I’m not working you’ll usually find me hanging out with friends or spending time with my family. My spunky 102 year old grandmother makes certain I don’t miss our weekly visit.
That I have a weird obsession with garden gnomes… Not really. I don’t know, maybe that I like to draw and paint.
Where do you live now? How long have you been living there? I live in Cocoa Beach and have lived beachside for the past seventeen years. What do you love most about living/working beachside? I love the close-knit community here on the beach. Although I can’t lie, I sometimes wish I could unhear things. I know a little more than I would like to about some of you folks.
What’s your favorite thing about tending bar? Least favorite thing? My favorite thing is that it’s fun most of the time. I love most of the people that come in and some are like family. I can have great conversations and sometimes make it through a night and it not feel like work. My least favorite thing is dealing with someone that can’t handle their alcohol or the person that no matter what you do for them will not be satisfied. I think some people just wake up some days and say “I’m just gonna be a jerk today for no reason really.” What’s the strangest concoction you’ve ever been asked to make? A vodka martini up with Blue Cheese salad dressing mixed

Elizabeth Short, so I can find out exactly what happened. What would you order for your last meal? Any Southern meal my family has prepared and an ice cold beer. What would you like to come back as in your next life? Myself of course. I definitely wouldn’t mind being me again but maybe rich next time… Yeah. that would be nice. What makes Pig & Whistle a great place to come for a pint? I think it’s just a comfortable place for most people. Everyone’s home away from home. Who is your favorite famous pig? It has to be Porky Pig. Looney Tunes had the best cartoons ever hands down. Speaking of pigskins, what is your favorite football team? Tampa Bay Buccaneers! New season and new quarterback so I’m hopeful. Being a Bucs fan however has taught me not to get too excited.

Matt’s Casbah Restaurant ofthe Month This is not the first time we have featured Matt’s Casbah in this magazine. In a 2009 issue, we trumpeted the reemergence of Chef Matt Nunges into the Brevard restaurant scene after a five year void. Today, the delectable menu and versatile atmosphere has allowed Matt’s Casbah to blossom into one of the most popular and unique restaurants in Downtown Melbourne. Longtime employee Deb Linsey has been with Matt since the advent of his culinary endeavors. Here she tell us about the growth, changes, and success Matt’s Casbah has enjoyed over the past six years. How would you describe the customer base at Matt’s Casbah? Are you still seeing familiar faces from Tropical Grill? We’re able to create a wide variety of food, beverage and entertainment experiences. Our relaxed atmosphere attracts a very diverse group of guests to Matt’s Casbah. A look in the parking lot reveals as many pickup trucks as luxury sedans. Our eclectic menu runs all day, every day. We aim to please everyone with familiar comfort foods like burgers and Pop’s pot roast as well as gourmet options for more adventurous guests. Our award-winning sushi bar has attracted a firm following of regulars, including many who knew us from our Tropical Grill days on A1A. We enjoy greeting the old friends who have followed Matt, but it is also gratifying to welcome our new fans from Melbourne and beyond. Our prime location gives us great exposure to the growing numbers of snowbirds and vacationers so we have a crowd of seasonal friends who enjoy Matt’s Casbah. Our location also allows us serve some of the crowd attracted by the activities put on by Melbourne Main Street,
such as Friday Fest and the Art Festivals. Since we have been here, Historic Downtown has evolved into the entertainment and dining core of Melbourne and we are proud to be part of that.
Where does the inspiration for the new menu items come from? Inspiration for new menu items often comes from a daily special that has sold very well. An example of this is now on our new menu- the steak salad, which marries freshly seared to order filet chunks with mixed greens, fresh herbs and our signature lime chile dressing. It’s so popular because the combination of warm beef, cold salad and tangy zero-fat dressing pushes all your buttons. Inspiration also comes from catering and special event menus we have served. We did a Field to Forks charity dinner and the menu theme was Middle Eastern. The new flavor and ingredient combinations in turn inspired our Braised Pork Shanks with Moroccan spices, chickpeas and dried fruits. Our pantry is also a great inspiration for new dishes. Matt makes sure there are flavoring ingredients from a broad range of countries on the shelves. Our Hunan Lamb T-bone is marinated in hoisin sauce and finished with a sauce that includes sesame seeds, ginger and tangerine oil. He also is inspired by the classical cuisine taught in culinary school. Our Veal Scaloppini starts
out traditionally with sherry and demi glace brown sauce but veers east with the addition of shiitake mushrooms, chile and sesame oil. Our Kitchen Manager Fook Ruangratara is from Thailand and is also an accomplished sushi chef so he is a constant source of innovative flavor profiles to titillate the taste buds of our guests. Lastly, current food trends can motivate our chefs to change menu items. Gluten free raviolis have been added, along with an Asian inspired rice noodle dish which is also vegan. Matt’s menu has always been vegetarian friendly and much of our food is “healthy”. It is relatively low in sodium, fat, sugar and chemical additives. We can say this because we make everything from scratch. Can you give us some examples of tried and true customer favorites? Are there dishes that have not left the menu since Matt’s opened? There would be a guest revolt if we took our Warm Nutted Goat Cheese Salad off the menu. It was a best seller since the Matt’s Tropical Grill days and still is. Our Seared Calamari is unique, and the trio of fish is always popular. The signature Flaming Cedar Planked Salmon came from Matt’s Tropical Grill as did the Crispy Crunchy Whole Fish. All are still
top sellers. Our burgers are always popular because they are hand formed from eight ounces of prime beef and are never frozen. The toppings may change but the burger never does. Finally, Matt had the first sushi bar on the beach and was the first in Historic Downtown Melbourne. Explain how you integrate art and live entertainment into the dining experience at Matt’s Casbah. Matt’s Casbah is the main gallery for the local artist Michael ‘Nemo’ Nemnich. Matt and Nemo have been friends for years. Nemo selected the interior colors for the new restaurant and rotates the art on a regular basis. We had a couple from Tampa who had bought his work at a local art festival, where he told them about his ‘gallery’ at Matt’s Casbah. They drove over to celebrate their anniversary with us and bought a souvenir piece of art after dinner.
We have live music almost every night out on the patio, especially ‘in season’ when the weather cooperates. The style varies through the week, ranging from traditional rock and roll on a Friday to more mellow jazz and singer/guitarists during the week. We have enjoyed a jazz musician during Sunday brunch. Tell us about your catering ventures. Catering is an important part of our business with a good balance between private and corporate events. We have a full time catering manager, William Payne, who serves both private and corporate markets. For weddings, scale has ranged from a simple customer pickup order at the restaurant to off- site with live action chef stations for 300. We are one of the few restaurants who can offer sushi and sashimi to our customers. Recently we have added paella to our catering options. Paella is a flavorful Spanish rice dish, topped with your choice of chicken, seafood, meat or a combination. It is cooked outside in a big flat pan which entices your guests with wonderful smells as it cooks. Our smaller Wa v e r l y room which seats up to 30 is used for all kinds of meetings and celebrations. Guests can order off the menu or tailor their menu s p e c i a l l y. Our patio is also a popular spot for parties, and we’ve even had events in our parking lot. At the other end of the scale, we have the Chef ’s Table in our main dining room. You can book a special dinner for up to 12 with a menu tailored to your desires by Chef Matt Nugnes. Christmas parties are booked on and off site months in advance. William can plan special occasions of every type, for almost any budget, in the restaurant or at the site of your choice. He brings a wealth of experience making every event special and we invite your readers to give him a call at the restaurant, 321-574-1099. What does the future hold for Matt’s Casbah? We are very excited to be taking over the food and beverage program at the Kiwi Tennis Club where many of our guests from the Tropical Grill days are members. It is gratifying that more than ten years after closing they are eager to have us back on the beachside. We can hardly wait!
Come to Matt’s Casbah for the ultimate art, dining and entertainment experience. Located at 801 E. New Haven Avenue, Melbourne. For more information call 321-574-1099 or go to www.mattscasbah.com

Cocoa Beach during the 50’s and 60’s. I realized there was no formal oral history effort that focused on this aspect of Brevard History,” Walters stated. Walters partnered with the US Space Walk of Fame and the late Dr. Calvin Fowler, a Test Conductor. He pushed the button that launched Mercury astronauts Gordon Cooper, Wally Schirra and
Dr. Lori Walters is a historian who wants you to learn about the past and interact with it. She’s a Research Assistant Professor with the Institute for Simulation and Training (IST) and Department of History at the University of Central Florida. The founder of the Florida Space Coast History Project, Dr. Walters is currently working to preserve the history of Cocoa Beach virtually.
Scott Carpenter. “We began gathering the histories of space workers, concentrating on those from that era. We focused on that demographic. We’re losing them at a very alarming rate.” Walters targeted those whose lives were affected by the Space Race. Determined to document as many first impressions of Brevard as possible, she interviewed space worker’s wives and business owners. Many people relocated here from other parts of the country and had different perspectives. She also spoke to locals who lived here for years and asked them their view of the changes. Walters collaborated with Fowler for several years collecting oral histories and with Michelle Adams to digitized photos. They gathered over 10,000 photos from the Cape and KSC. After discussing a virtual rainforest with some members of IST, Walters began to brainstorm. If she could secure blueprints and combine them with their photos, they could recreate the historic Cape in 3-D. Walters and Fowler recreated John Glenn’s launch on February 20, 1962. They tied the project to the local residents and demonstrated the importance of the US space program to the American people. The project resulted in Shadows of Canaveral, an interactive 3-D recreation that allows viewers to enter the darkroom of a lab photographer or the room of a reporter at the Starlite motel. You can walk through the room picking up objects such as magazines or telephones, all the while learning tidbits of history. After completing the project Walters took a break for a few years. But she couldn’t pass up the chance to work on another historical venture. “Last year, I started looking at the fate of the Glass Bank in Cocoa Beach. Recently the lab acquired a FARO S120 laser scanner. This scanner is often used by construction and engineering firms and police departments to document crime scenes. In historic preservation, structures are scanned in the event of fires, natural disasters or destructive manmade events to help with restoration. We conducted a scan just prior to the Glass Bank’s demolition. Our goal was to virtually restore the Glass Bank to what it was like shortly after its 1962 opening. We didn’t have
many photos of the interior. However, we’re very fortunate to have wonderful people available who once worked in the Glass Bank building. They were able to assist with the layout, furniture and color schemes.” Walters secured funding from the university to recreate the exterior of the building and ground floor. Her aim is to complete the interior and include interactive characters that will tell you what Cocoa Beach and the space program were like during this time period. She plans to broaden her project to include all of downtown Cocoa Beach. She seeks additional oral histories and photos. She needs photos of the Glass Bank, Downtown Cocoa Beach, the motel strip north of downtown. Everything from the beach to the myriad of nightclubs the space workers went to unwind – Mousetrap, Samoan Lounge and Lee Caron’s Carnival Club. “I’m busy locating more interviews with people who lived there during the era. I’m looking for postcards, restaurant menus, photographs, motel keys - anything that can assist in creating a more precise recreation.” When Cal Fowler passed away his wife donated his papers to the institute. “I’m still processing all these papers and ultimately will make them available to the public. The most memorable item is a ticket from a Friendship 7 dance. Shortly after John Glenn’s flight, there was a dance at the armory over in Cocoa. It’s a hand drawn Friendship 7 capsule printed on the ticket. Cal had it signed by all of the Mercury astronauts, members of the launch team and even Annie Glenn. Virtual Reality may be the future of History Education. Thanks to Dr. Walters’s work, the glamour of 1960’s Cocoa Beach will never fade away completely. Hopefully, Cocoa Beach will retain her star power for generations to come. Dr. Lori C. Walters is looking for Cocoa Beach photos or memorabilia from the 50’s and 60’s. Down On Main Street Organization. Promotion. Design. Economic restructuring.
These are the elements that over 2,000 communities across the country have used as a starting point for reinvigorating their downtown scenes. The National Main Street Center, a subsidiary of the National Trust for Historic Preservation, developed this Four Point Approach® as a tool for towns to use existing architectural, economic, and cultural elements as a foundation for ongoing revitalization. Here in Brevard County, we have four accredited Main Street programs: Cocoa, Cocoa Beach, EGAD, and Melbourne. Using the Four Points® as well as other Main Street guiding principles, these organizations use various projects and signature events to spur economic growth, maintain historical integrity, and contribute to the overall improvement of their communities. While each of the programs is tailored specifically to the needs of their location, all share the understanding that local history needs to be shared and preserved. Hundreds of volunteers work to spread this message and at the same time advance and enrich their communities. Here the Executive Director from each each of the Brevard County Main Streets tells us a bit about the individual programs as well as why it is so important that organizations like Main Street exist. Cheers to them for continually bettering these downtown community cores and at the same time preserving the glories of yesteryear. Cocoa Main Street has 65 members (including businesses and individuals), nine board members, and one Executive Director, Ken Wilshire. “There have been numerous projects that are relevant to the revitalization of Cocoa Village. However, all of them predate my tenure in the role of Executive Director. That aside, our current board and its leadership are strategically organizing new projects that stand to have great impact on the future of the downtown Cocoa community. At the heart of this revitalization effort are the strong, passionate advocates of our downtown center. They personify their dedication by ensuring that their "place" is as much a creative, vibrant expression of them, as it is of all the people who come to experience Cocoa Village.
This is an incredible opportunity for Cocoa Main Street to resurface as an organization committed to the continued improvement of Cocoa Village. We want the community to know that we’re active and are gaining momentum. Today the Cocoa Main Street program strives to enhance its unique community identity and heritage, and foster a center of activity that ensures economic stability, Cocoa Main Street wants to highlight the concentrated efforts of design, promotion, organization and economic revitalization.”

Cocoa Village in the1920’s and Downtown Cocoa Beach in the 1950’s
Cocoa Beach Main Street is the newcomer of the group, having just received accreditation at the end of 2014. There are currently eight board members and one newly-hired Executive Director, Karen Thompson. “Cocoa Beach Main Street, Inc. is a brand new Main Street organization. This is an exciting time for downtown and the entire community! It means a small army of individuals have dedicated their time, money, sweat and hearts to Downtown Cocoa Beach. We are in recruitment mode.
Each board member is educating the community on Main Street’s mission and enticing them into sitting on a committee. With Main Street’s Four Point® approach, the chances of finding a specific committee that interests you are great. We have our very first Board Retreat next month. This is where we roll up our sleeves and get down to specific goals and projects. We met with the City Manager, commissioners, residents and business owners. We’re compiling all their hopes, needs and desires for downtown and simplifying them into quantifiable results. Downtown Cocoa Beach offers riverfront on one side, an ocean on the other and a charming downtown in between. We have a wide range of cafes, shops, restaurants and even a local brewery. Cocoa Beach Main Street already has a
great group of successful businesses. This allows us to design a plan for downtown, marketing and events. The future is exciting for Downtown Cocoa Beach. We have events and projects on the way. Main Street understands that Downtown is the heart of the community. It’s where we gather, laugh and play. We have a huge responsibility to deliver on our promises and we intend to do just that.”
Stay tuned for the launching of the brand new Cocoa Beach Main Street website and Facebook page! In the meantime, email CocoaBeachMS@gmail.com for more information on how to get involved.
Eau Gallie Arts District “We keep the history of Eau Gallie relevant today with multiple projects, the most obvious ongoing project being Eau Gallie Square. Actually, it was formerly a parking lot and the Eau Gallie Rotary and CRA built the new square which includes our fantastic band shell with near perfect acoustics, native plantings and a central area
where we place our Christmas tree every year. We are improving the streetscaping in the park and on Highland Avenue. It is the heart of our community. Anyone born and raised in Eau Gallie knows why we have a successful Main Street program. There is a very tight knit community still in place that, frankly, is still mad that Eau Gallie was annexed by Melbourne. It takes a lot to establish a Main Street program. Merchants and galleries in business, and many others, came together to breathe life into it and make it stand. It has now taken off because others see the potential of this

small gem of a city and how there is no place else like it in Brevard County. We call it a genuine, authentic Florida neighborhood. EGAD has tremendous momentum right now. That stems from the businesses that have celebrated 40 years, the ones who just opened, and the millennials drawn to this walkable urban center. We finally got a great coffee shop. We’re working on more restaurants, an ice cream parlor, a wine bar and more retail that stay open later. The city of Melbourne is about to change the height overlay restriction this month and it will affect development for certain.”

Melbourne “Melbourne Main Street flourishes due to support from the City of Melbourne, specifically the downtown CRA. They even awarded us an operating grant. The CRA truly understand the importance of a Main Street program and are our biggest advocates. We also have supportive business neighbors. While my job is to grow the organization, we serve the businesses directly and we’re only as successful as they are. Melbourne Main Street has so much going on! One of our most recent endeavors is the Melbourne Main Street Mural Project. Over the next year we will be painting 10-20 walls downtown. I work next door to Frits Van Eeden, an internationally recognized artist. We have two theaters. Sometimes I visit Henrimae Bell in her studio and chat about her travels while I look at her beautiful paintings. In other words, there’s so much art here in downtown. This is

Depending on the event, Melbourne Main Street has anywhere from five to 30 volunteers on hand. There is a part time promotions coordinator, and the one fulltime employee is Executive Director Jarin Eisenberg. just one way of really putting it out there for the whole community to see. The opportunities in our future are endless. That is what I love about Main Street. Downtown Melbourne can be anything we want it to be. Main Street plays a crucial role in supporting that growth. Over the next five years, I see this organization gaining greater recognition in the Melbourne area as well as on a state level. Our goal is to be a model for other Main Street programs and to lead the way in community revitalization.”

If you had a time machine, what point in Florida history would you travel back to and why?
I was raised in Winter Haven, Florida. My background is colorful and some may say “random” as far as careers go. I spent my teenage and early twenties water skiing at Cypress Gardens and SeaWorld. I spent my late twenties and thirties training dolphins and going to school. I was introduced to Main Street in Winter Haven and began my career as an Assistant Director then eventually, Director. My passion is downtown revitalization and events. I’ve seen downtowns go from blighted to beautiful. I’m excited to be a part of this in Cocoa Beach. We are residents, business owners, accountants, designers, retailers and more who have dedicated ourselves to downtown! The Main Street program works.
Ken Wilshire, Cocoa “As a fan of Ernest Hemingway, I’d want to travel back to the early 30’s when he arrived in Key West. Having the opportunity to explore Florida then spending one good afternoon with Hemingway, uncovering all the stories behind the Sun Also Rises, would surely be a fine way to spend some time.”
Karen Thompson, Cocoa Beach “If I had a time machine I would go back to the 50’s when Esther Williams was at the peak of her career. Many of her films and more were filmed right in my home town, Winter Haven at Cypress Gardens. I grew up idolizing the bathing beauties which ultimately lead to my love of waterskiing.”
Lisa Packard, EGAD “My grandmother was a hostess at the original Fountainbleu Hotel in Miami. She was there when the Rat Pack blew into town and other notables in politics and show business. It was Miami’s heyday. I would love to have been able to experience that.”

I am originally from South Florida, but I consider Tampa home. I graduated from the University of South Florida.. During my time at USF, I focused on how policies made at the highest level impacted students and teachers at an urban inner city elementary school. My husband grew up in this area so we moved back right after graduating. I was fortunate enough that my first job out of college was at Florida Institute of Technology managing online degree programs for Florida Tech Online. I’m proud to be a part of Melbourne Main Street because we help create a space for the entire community to enjoy. Downtown is everything. It’s art, culture, food, and fun. Main Street is a proven approach for supporting, promoting, and revitalizing historic downtown areas. We can see this in property values, community investment statistics, and other measurements.
Born in Memphis, I am a southern fried fan of good times, family, and fabulous friends. I am a friend of cool places, the blues, and all things grilled or smoked. I love my wife and my son. I love creative vision and action and I am so happy to be involved with Cocoa Main Street. They foster my creative outlets and allow me to organize their efforts for the good of this awesome community. Organizations with hearts this full are the necessary vehicle for the passionate soul to see vision manifest into action. They contribute exclusively to the good of the community, and to exponentially impact quality of life for the places they call home!
Jarin Eisenberg, Melbourne “This is a tough one for me. As a young female professional, I am enjoying this time in my life and this point in history. So many doors have been opened for me by other women. If I had to pick something, I think I would say I would go back to a time when the Indian River Lagoon was healthy and thriving. The Lagoon is such a centerpiece to our area. I would use my time machine to put policies and protections in place so that it would not be in the dire condition it is today.”

Eau Gallie: Lisa Packard I moved here six years ago from Alexandria, VA. My dad retired from the Air Force in 1969 and we moved to Cocoa. But the Cape cut back so we left for the DC area where I lived until recently. I think Main Street programs offers well-meaning individuals a format to revitalize under-performing areas of town with an emphasis on retaining its historic architectural personality. The Four Point® approach covers all of the bases for revitalization. The structure of the nonprofit organization itself, the events required to build community and raise funds, and the tools for attracting new businesses. Through consensus building and focused project management, a town can rebuild and redevelop without destroying its historical identity.

Hey there! I’m Pebbles, a sweet 5-year-old Pit bull who was rescued from the shelter by Friends for Animals Sanctuary this past December. Since then, I’ve been waiting with my paws crossed for the right person to scoop me up and make me a part of their pack. I am looking for a loving forever family that likes to have lots of fun! I love people, especially ones that give me tons of snuggles and let me sunbathe in the yard. My closest pals these days are two sweet kids that are my roommates in my foster home. The girls help to fill my days with all sorts of fun activities. They play fetch with me, sometimes share their snacks, and even let me take naps in their princess tent. My ideal forever home would be with an active family who likes to play outside and take me for walks or runs. I’m an excellent running buddy.

I really love when I get to go to Wickham Park and run the lure course with my doggy pals! I get along well with other large dogs, but would prefer to not be around cats and smaller dogs. When I meet new people, they often comment on my sweet nature, beautiful smile, and good manners. I am a good girl who doesn’t take things that aren’t mine, won’t climb up on furniture, and I don’t jump up on people. Oh, I’m also spayed, crate trained, and am up to date on my shots. I know it’s not classy to toot my own horn, so here’s some kind words from my foster mom. “She’s the sweetest girl in the whole world. So good with my kids, and has no bad habits. One of the best fosters I have ever had.”

Michael-Gene Robert Futch, a Melbourne born athlete and youth basketball coach, who passed away in 2010 in a tragic car accident. Sarah Jean met the Futch’s at their cake shop, Creative Cakes, in Melbourne. She said, “It was an instant connection.” She learned about their story, their son, and their foundation and fell in love with the people. They hang out on the weekends and she says they’ve become a second family to them. Sarah Jean is also in charge of booking for the band, and in her words she “keeps them busy.” When you check out their calendar you will notice that each weekend until the end of the year The Umbrella Thieves will be somewhere in Brevard County. In September you’ll be able to catch them at Sandbar on the 5th at 9pm and at Milliken’s Reef on the 19th at 5pm.

The band originated in Melbourne; getting their name from a time Jazono “Jazzy” Balarezo, keyboardist and Sarah Jean’s husband, got caught in a rainstorm and she told him he should keep an umbrella in his truck. Then they realized he’d have to worry about umbrella thieves – once it was said, it stuck. The Umbrella Thieves are a variety dance cover band featuring powerhouse vocals and a fusion of musicians that know how to jam. Each member brings a distinct style to the group, which is what they originally sought when they formed the band in 2013. They have managed to bring three other musicians into their fold to complete their sound. On drums they have Mark Epperly, who played with Internal Strife. Matt Nylen replaced the original guitarist Darren Ebert in 2014. Matt also plays with Angel City. Darryl McGowan Jr. has stepped in as their bassist. Darryl is also a member of a jazz fusion band called Cheap Cherry Quintet. They cover music from the 60s to modern radio hits, with hits from bands like the The Temptations. each other, their timing and improvisation was remarkable. They’re best known for learning special request songs for their next performance. “Happy” by Pharrell was one of those requests that ended up being a mainstay in their set. The whole band gets into it with Mark carrying the beat and the guys singing back-up to Sarah Jean’s lead. When I watched this song performed people were dancing side stage, around the bar, and around their tables. Everyone seemed to enjoy the atmosphere of good music, food, and company. One of The Umbrella Thieves favorite bands is Journey, and it shows with the amount of skill they have poured into their cover of “Separate Ways.” Sarah Jean said her favorite song to perform is “Whole Lotta Love” by Led Zeppelin. On August 22 they played a show at the Crown Plaza Hotel for the 4 Foundation Black Tie Event. The Michael-Gene Foundation honors

Album Reviews by M.A. Rivera
Smoke Fairies Live at St Pancras Old Church, 24/10/13
cello respectively, along with multi-instrumentalist, Neil Walsh. Their accompaniment is sultry and intimate. We can hear the audience applaud in between songs, but more than a performance, this sounds as though the band is playing for themselves. Like slow burning coals, these songs positively smolder with intensity. This is a limited edition, vinyl-only release. It’s stunning for how perfectly beautiful it is.
Featuring Rasputina
Cincinnati gives us Royal HolSmoke Fairies, for the uninitiated, are a duo from Sussex, England who specialize in blending their voices into dark, dreamy melodies. Katherine Blamire and Jessica Davies weave misty, troubled emotions with a supple and graceful ease. Opening with “Fences,” the song could’ve been captured by Alan Lomax as he passed through Appalachia during the depression, or on a Thursday evening at the Cafe Wha in ‘63. But this spartan sound and elusive timelessness executed with such commitment is precisely why Smoke Fairies are so compelling. “Living with Ghosts” comes off like an unguarded admission. The melancholy slide guitar effectively underscores the revelation, “It can get lonely/ Living with ghosts.” “Summer Fades” stands out as they sing, “Can you hold me like you held someone/You should never have let go?” This is delivered with a hopeful yearning. Smoke Fairies call to mind the best work of Joni Mitchell and The Cowboy Junkies without sounding like either one. There’s a frail and tender strength which permeates through all of the music. This album was recorded in October 2013. They were accompanied by Daniel Dejesus and Melora Creagor of Rasputina, on viola and

Angela Moyra Fickle Island
Zip Records, 2014 This is what happens when a jazz singer slinks into a coffee shop and plays around with an acoustic guitar. Dutch singer Angela Moyra’s US debut is distinctively surprising. A tropical cabaret show destined for a tiki bar filled with people ready to unplug and disconnect from the maddening crowd. Moyra noodles around with pop and ragtime, and may be overly fond of the ukulele. This is a blend that is refreshing as it is different and unexpected. “Fickle” bounces along brightly with a pedal steel guitar underscoring her dreamy lighter than air voice. “Bubbalu” could be straight from Tin Pan Alley. Playful, animated, and mostly irresistible, “Little Town By The Sea” is a quiet song of tender longing. But with “Hati Sakit”, Moyra’s voice is tormented and quietly resigned. The most serious song on the disc, it’s
a thoroughly vexed folk song. Overall these songs are sunny, upbeat and ever hopeful. Light and breezy, these saltsoaked melodies are designed for decompressing.
Dark Side of The Mule Gov’t Mule
Evil Teen, 2014 This release documents the 2008 Halloween show by Gov’t Mule. The album proves they’re possibly the best Pink Floyd tribute band ever. Dark Side of the Mule, was recorded at the Orpheum Theatre in Boston. Featuring all the well-known Pink Floyd tracks you’d expect — with a few lesser-known ones for the diehards in the crowd. This is available in the single CD, eleven song version, or the deluxe 3 CD/1 DVD version. As they continue to delve into their influences, Gov’t Mule shows they are far more than another jam band. There are Rolling Stones and reggae releases as well as some Doors and Neil Young sets in the works. Their profound dedication to recreating entire sets in tribute shows a deep purist streak. Dark Side of the Moon sports the most songs here, but “Pigs on the Wing” from Animals is played as well as Meddle’s “One of These Days” and “Fearless.” It’s easy to tell the band is having fun. On “Have a Cigar”, drummer Matt Abts changes the signature line to “By the way, which one’s the Mule?” Whether you’re a casual listener of Floyd’s radio friendly hits or of deep cuts connoisseur, this is an undeniably brilliant release.

The Art Side
Cliffton Chandler By Gable Costello
Melbourne Beach native Cliffton Chandler is described by the Robot Love v2.0 website as “largely responsible for the surge of ‘underground’ art on the Space Coast.” The statement grossly underplays the artistic firebrand. Chandler is fueled by the call to democratize the virtuous from the elite to the masses and strip away fine art’s illusion of exclusivity. Cliffton’s contribution to the local art scene is more than a footnote entry
the
on an artist profile. The luminary has contributed much to the Space Coast creative culture, from “discovering” local street calligrapher Cynic at a Melbourne High art show to crafting the physical installations that greet
you at Derek Gores Gallery. Local photographer Casey DeCotis said of Cliffton that he is “a creative maniac and warrior. He never ceases to amaze me with his ideas. He has a seek-and-destroy mentality towards creativity.” Five years have elapsed since the Robot Love v2.0 spectacle transformed a West Melbourne movie theater into a petri dish of artistic forms. The years have found Cliffton splitting time between his coastal hometown and the urban sprawl of Orlando. The un-reformed street artist is pursuing a formal education in Architecture from Valencia and a practical education from his construction and production design work. The artist has always had a way of bringing art to the people. A walk through Downtown Melbourne could reveal a thought-provoking red spray-painted equation on the back of a bench. Maybe you’ll see Chris Maslow’s gas-masked figure staring from the whitewashed side of an electrical box like an Occupy Wall Street recruitment poster, or stencils of Bill Murray and Richard Pryor in light blue. Cliffton’s art was graffiti but it was different. It followed a movement that was transforming street art from tagging to creating multi-layered memes with spray paint and cardboard. London artist Banksy comes to mind when people think about stencil graffiti. But Cliffton’s curiosity about
the form came from Melbourne, Australia, the “Street Art Capital of the World.” There the graffiti’s influence has driven a cultural dialog between
Photo by Casey DeCotis the public and artists. “I just Googled the Melbourne, Austrailia art scene one day for inspiration. What I found was that there was a positive economic impact to allowing graffiti in a place like the town square. It creates community dialog.” Cliffton is excited that the Space Coast Melbourne is finally embracing murals,
thanks in part to his fight with the city council to no longer treat wall art as illegal signage. A circular raised stage in the Foosaner Annex was the focal point for the third incarnation of the Space Coast’s expression of its rising art scene, Robot Love 3D, which took place this past Valentines Day weekend. When I entered the evolving exhibition space on the workdays before the opening I was greeted by a toolbelt-clad Cliffton. He was applying a green Astroturf surface to a stage that would host over a dozen local musical acts and performance artists. Cliffton doesn’t create the kind of art that hangs on walls but the kind that transforms spaces from walls to floors. The result is a feeling both grounded and edgy. The artist describes Robot Love 3D as “combining media to blur lines and to not be a slave to place. It solves a social problem, using local assets to create an event where everybody can come together. Individualism is isolation. We’re destructive when we’re disconnected.”
Cliffton will return to the Eau Gallie Arts District to curate and exhibit new work in “Manufactured Scarcity”, opening this December at the Derek Gores Gallery. Connect with Chandler’s work at www. clifftonchandler.com

Jedi Grind Tricks
Coming Up
Sept. 25th
Back in the Groove
Midnight Madness
By Scooter Newell • sk8scooter@gmail.com www.cocoabeachskatepark.com
School is back in session. The days of drawing skateboards and ramps on your book covers and folders are back. Do kids even have books and folders anymore? I don’t know. I am getting old. Either way, drive safe!
A Push Through Town Lately, I’ve been reliving my days of youth. Skateboarding around the town, just like so many of us used to enjoy. Hitting old spots, finding new ones, landing tricks and taking some slams. It is just like the old days, but this time it is slightly different. The clock is always ticking. If I don’t get a few shots of tricks on video before I get too old to do them, I’ll be upset. Plus, I want to send a “sponsor me” video to the guys at Outerknown. The idea is to create a promotional video for the skate park and to use on our live webcasts of our events. If you see me and JT around town shooting average skating with an above average camera package, say hello! We are shooting in front of lots of different businesses to illustrate our interpretation of this town. Stay tuned for the final video. You heard about it here first.
Contest News Join us Labor Day Weekend for the 30th Annual Rich Salick NKF Surf Fest to be held at the Cocoa Beach Pier. We are pretty much family with the NKF Surf Fest and for the last five
years we have incorporated a crossover event with surfing and skateboarding. It’s called the Surf N Turf and competitors earn points for a bowl contest and a surf contest. We will be running the second half of the Surf N Turf Event at the Pier. The skateboarding portion took place on Aug. 29th at the skate park. Those same competitors will be surfing against each other on Sunday, Sept. 6th and with the Finals 6 surfers on Monday the 7th. Come down and check it out! –Current Points Standings on CocoaBeachSkatePark.com Recently, the crew went to the Satellite Beach Skate Park for a competition. Satellite has an older concrete park but it is still lots of fun. Everyone from Cocoa Beach skated great. Elijah, Killian, Grace, Silas, Dominic and Cameron. The contest was run in jams (multiple skaters at the same time) and our crew destroyed that place. There was confusion about the scoring and how they would advance the skaters to the finals. But, in the end Elijah got 3rd place in Advanced and Silas took 2nd Place in Intermediate -at only eight years old. It only strengthens the beachside skate scene when our neighboring parks hold events. You can always bet the Cocoa Beach crew will support. Good Job, Satellite Crew
Midnight Skate Session and Fundraiser for Skate to School Scholarships. The “Skate to School” competition series will begin Nov. 21st at the Cocoa Beach Skate Park. Stay tuned to CocoaBeachSkatePark.com for more informationEveryone from Cocoa Beach skated great. Elijah, Killian, Grace, Silas, Dominic and Cameron.. The Cocoa Beach Boardriders Club meets at Todd Holland’s School of Surf every other Wednesday. The family- friendly supervised surf session for kids is followed by a free skate night at the skate park. Check out School of Surf on Facebook and Instagram and in real life! We will continue with our 2nd Annual Diversity Day in October. It will be held during the week of the Minutemen Football Homecoming Game. Diversity Day is a day where we (older guys/gals) invite kids from area schools to meet and hang out at the skate park. We’ll have food, drinks, music, and free skate lessons. We want to celebrate our differences. We all go through hard times. We all have dealt with peer pressure, and we’re OK with it. It was created to squash bullying and to educate kids about their own untapped potential.
We will be looking for volunteers and donations of food drinks and perhaps prizes. Vendors and Sponsors email ScooterNewell@gmail.com for more info.

This year’s Causeway to Causeway Paddle Challenge will be held on Saturday, Oct. 24th. C2C draws many of the best paddlers on the Right Coast and beyond. The non-trophy format encourages anyone who thinks they have the right stuff to take on the challenge. The C2C is open to all paddle craft, including outrigger canoes, stand up paddleboards and
traditional paddleboards. The course consists of a one- way downriver run of 17.5 miles with an option of a short course of 11 miles. Both courses will begin at Lee Wenner Park, Cocoa, FL (SR 520) as in previous years. The long course will extend to just north of the Eau Gallie causeway (SR 518). The finish will be a short half mile jog around the tip of Merritt Island and will end at Oar and Paddles Park in Indian Harbor Beach. You can find a map of the course http://routebuilder.org/dbz. The 11 mile course will end at POW/MIA park at the Pineda Causeway (SR 404). Proceeds benefit the Cocoa
Beach Surf Museum’s paddleboard and surfing events as well as our community education programs and historical preservation efforts. As always our dedicated volunteers and sponsors come together to make each year better than the last. Boardrider ofthe Month by Jenny Bilchak
Jeremy Edgar Sitting down for a midmorning breakfast at Surfinista with this month’s boardrider, we were surrounded by friends and family. Jeremy Edgar is known for always running around with a smile on his face and a lust for adventure. He’s still glowing from his latest trip to Costa Rica where he not only caught amazing rights but also his girlfriend Morgan’s hand in marriage. Jeremy has had a high energy summer and I’m glad I got a chance to catch up with him. Raised in Gainesville, Jeremy is a true Florida boy. He was always more interested in the water than land. As a true waterman, he took advantage of whatever he could to fulfill his urge for H2O. He would drive to St. Augustine whenever possible to try to catch a wave. A little later in life he fell hard for a new sport: wakeboarding. He loved it so much that he changed his life path and built it around the water. He moved to a place on a lake, got a boat, worked at the marina. He started training as a wake boarder and doing contests. Jeremy loved this life but ultimately it took a toll on him. His job was taking him too far north for his southern blood and his knee was taking a beating. He had to have back to back surgeries. While still continuing to wakeboard and dabble in other extreme sports, Jeremy was ready for a move. He decided to come to Cocoa Beach about eight years ago. After moving to the area, Jeremy found an old love in the surfboard. Starting off with a classic log from the 80’s, Jeremy’s collection has grown exponentially. He is currently shaping his second board at our local Foam Shapers. He also mentioned he was
shaping a hydrofoil board. I’ve only heard small bits about this sport and I wanted to hear more. “I’m kite hydrofoiling because of our light winds and lack of waves in the summer. It’s similar to kitesurfing. You’re strapped in with a waist harness and have a kite attached. But you don’t need the 16-20 plus mph winds. Hydrofoiling can operate with winds of 8-12 mph. The board is similar to a small 5-foot surfboard with a 4-foot hydrofoil fin underneath. The fin is a small version of an airplane wing. While you go through the water it creates lift and rises out of the water. A feeling of flying that I’ve never felt before,” he tells me. I asked him if this was popular in other parts of the world and who would he recommend for lessons? Jeremy said, “Yes, hydrofoiling is becoming very popular all around the U.S. and the world. Now they’re holding races in France. If you want to check this out come down to the 520 causeway or check out the beach for kiters. In town, there
is Good Breeze Kiteboarding and Ron Jon to give lessons and guidance. There’s also Keys Cable in Marathon, Florida.” I was glad to catch up with Jeremy and talk about all the exciting past and future. . Jeremy said he was grateful for his experiences. He’ll gets to pass on his love for the water to his fiance’s son, Grayson. He couldn’t be any happier to see that smile on his face, feel the stoke, and help build his confidence. I asked him if he had any advice for the groms coming up. “Spend more time in the water and don’t be afraid to take a lesson. Those guys know what they’re talking about,” he responded. I also asked if he had any shout-outs. He smiled and said “My fiancé Morgan, thank you for never giving me crap while I’m out doing what I love and for getting out there with me!” Love at its finest folks… Take a lesson.

with our eyes and feel in our bodies. We need to change our unsustainable ways because virtually all the indicators-greenhouse gas emissions to habitat and species loss- are still heading in the wrong direction. We must get on nature’s side, fight for it, and win. The late evolutionary biologist Stephen Jay Gould said “We cannot win this battle to save species and environment without forging an emotional bond between ourselves and nature as well-for we will not fight to save what we do not love.” We have a choice. We can decide what we want future Earth to be. Fishing Reports
The Lure of the Sea By Capt. Jamie Glasner www.finandflycharters.com
Well, its about that time a year again for the fall redfish spawn. It’s one of my favorite times to target bull redfish.
A Labor of Love and Lures
By Capt. Scott Bussen of the Relentless II www.fishrelentless.com
As I write this article, the Labor Day weekend looms on the calendar as sure as the morning sun on the horizon. For most people, the holiday weekend is a happy time of barbecues and beverages. For the fisherman, it’s a double edge sword. While the beer and barbecue thing is awesome, the weekend also signifies the summer coming to a close. No real need to dwell in the sadness, we all know that time waits for no fisherman or fisherwoman. Besides, the fall can bring with it some pretty darn good fishing! As far as last month goes, I would probably call it a fairly typical August. The fishing wasn’t red hot but there was still action to be had. The kingfishing was probably the star of the show as they were seemingly the best bet most of the month. The kings were scattered from the near shore waters throughout the inshore reefs and wrecks. The best area remained the Hetzel Shoal as the Spanish sardines continued residence there for the first portion of the month. Some days it was just a matter of catching a bait on the bait rig and immediately pitch it out on the live bait rig for an instant bite. Most of the kings were smaller, but there were also
some very nice fish caught in the mix. We got plenty of bonito and barracuda with an occasional cobia thrown in. For September, I would expect the live baiting to remain sporadic with the fish being scattered out throughout the area. As long as the shoal has been going off, I have to believe that this anomaly is going to come to an end. The reefs and inshore wrecks will likely take over the bulk of production after the sardines leave the shoal. The trick will be finding pogies as they have been difficult to locate and catch all summer. Take a box of frozen minnows for a bit of insurance. The bottom fishing was somewhat of a grind last month and I would expect September to be much of the same. There should be a few amberjack and an occasional grouper from 21 fathoms on out to the cones. It’s going to take a good bit of prospecting, so be patient. Bring plenty of live bait, the snappers are going to be hungry after the thermocline and the fact that there was no snapper season. Patience Daniel-san....
The best thing about fall is the start of the baitfish migration. Last year, September was the start of the inshore bonanza. The pogies were thick and the mullet started to move which ignited the nearshore waters with a firestorm of action. There were tarpon, sharks, jacks, cobia, bonito, kingfish, redfish, bluefish and Spanish mackerel. Sometimes, you could catch a different fish on each cast! Provided the baitfish start to show up, we should start to see this action crank up in September. If the tarpon are around the bait, you should see them crashing through the bait or just rolling in the vicinity. For the poons, try slow trolling pogies in the area you see them. If you see them crashing bait, the odds are pretty good that you’ll get a bite. If there’s a substantial aggregation around one particular bait pod, you may be able to catch them on freelined baits casted into the pod. For most of the other fish, use live bait either freelined or on a knocker rig fished right in the bait. If it’s anything like last year, the big breeder bull reds will be camped under some of the pods. If you find them, you can literally catch one every cast. If you fish close to the beach or jetties, there should also be a good chance at snook, flounder and mangrove snapper. Whichever way you choose to go, get out there and get after ‘em before the hurricanes turn everything upside down. See ya on the pond!!!
There are multiple ways to target these big spawning redfish. One way is throwing the biggest topwater lures you have and watching the redfish crush them at the surface. You can also tease them up to the boat with a topwater with no hooks on it to get a chance at one on the fly. The easiest way would be to use cut bait, but then again watching them blow up on topwater is a thrill. Now for the tarpon fishing. The bite is in full swing now. Multiple pods of tarpon are along beaches feeding on the pogie pods. It was insane! I personally saw 500+ tarpon in one day and boated some up to 180 pounds. Slow trolling live pogies was the trick. But make sure your tackle is strong enough because you
never know what size tarpon you’re going to hook. The Shimano Saragosa 8000 with an owner 9/0 circle hook will do the job just fine.
The offshore fishing has been pretty decent with a good mixture of kingfish and every now and then a sailfish. Live pogies definitely do the job! There has also been a few cobia that have been popping up behind the boat so keep a sharp eye out for them. Most people mistake them for a shark swimming around the boat. The Goliath Grouper (Jewfish) fishing has also been a blast, with fish ranging from 60-400 pounds. This is a fight you will not forget! The trout bite in the Mosquito Lagoon has started to improve. The last couple months have been real slow but it’s finally starting to get good again. The best bite is early in the morning using topwater. It doesn’t get any better than watching a gator trout blow up on a topwater lure. Well, that’s all I have for you this month so good luck on the water and catch em up! Don’t forget this is one of the best months to catch those giant redfish. Give me a call and I’ll get you out there on my new Skeeter Bay Boat!

Patrick AFB Rarest Sea Turtles In the World Hatch Along CCAFS Beaches by 45th Space Wing Public Affairs
After two months of incubation, two nests of the rarest and most endangered sea turtles in the world hatched along the beaches of the Cape Canaveral Air Force Station. Only two feet in length when fully grown, the Kemp’s ridley is of the smallest types of sea turtles. With numbers in decline since 1947, the successful hatching of two nests have made the 45th Space Wing biological scientists extremely happy. Females typically lay only one nest of eggs in their lives. The first nest produced 99 hatchlings and the second produced 72. Between both nests, only five eggs remained unhatched.
In addition to Kemp’s ridley, the 45th SW biologists have been busy tracking three other species of nesting sea turtles. As of July 31, 2015, CCAFS has had a total of 2,179 Loggerhead sea turtle nests, 201 Green sea turtle nests, and nine Leatherback sea turtle nests. PAFB had a total of 913 Loggerhead nests, 53 Green nests, and one Leatherback nest.

An Astronaut’s Guide to Life on Earth
What Going to Space Taught Me about Ingenuity, Determination, and Being Prepared for Anything
Col. Chris Hadfield Macmillan Books, 2013
Who do you call when the toilet on your Space Station overflows? Commander Chris Hadfield, who proved in his book that he’s a great plumber as well as an astronaut. For modern astronauts there are many mission critical requirements. These include knowing Russian, how to perform minor surgery, conduct experiments and interviews, and how to fix faulty plumbing. It’s easy to look at today’s heroes and immediately notice “the right stuff.” Yet no one mentions what “stuff ” morphs Joey Average into Chris Hadfield: astronaut, fighter pilot, and commander of the International Space station (ISS). Hadfield takes us on a journey through his life and his orbital path circling his dream. Space nerds and adrenaline junkies alike will also enjoy the gritty realities of unpredictable space travel. Hadfield calls Part 1 of his book “Pre-launch”. He admits he had little hope of becoming an astronaut. Growing up in Canada, he believed he could never be one. Astronauts were American and Canada didn’t have a space program. But he never stopped dreaming. He noted, “I had to imagine what an astronaut might do if he were 9 years old-- I could get started immediately. Would an astronaut eat his vegetables or have potato chips instead?” Hadfield credits his pessimistic view of his own career as the recipe for his success. Convinced he never knew enough, Hatfield did everything he could to bulk up his resume. It helped that he also enjoyed learning. He never lost track of the feeling that “it’s a job full of dreams.” He likened spaceflight to his life. Attitude in space is your position relative to the sun, Earth or other spacecrafts. If you don’t maintain and make constant adjustments to attitude, you stray from the path. You jeopardize the mission. He noted, “Ultimately, I don’t determine whether I arrive at the desired professional destination. Too many variables are out of my control. There’s really just one thing I can control, my
attitude during the journey.” Part 2 is titled “Liftoff ”. Hadfield explained why astronauts love Sharpies, the dangers of ammonia leaks and how social media can participate aboard ISS. Hadfield was aboard Atlantis. He was the first Canadian to command ISS and the only one to board the Mir. Hadfield also utilized social media to publicize ISS. He performed the first song ever recorded in space. His YouTube video rendition of “Space Oddity”, reached over 26 million hits and is ethereally heartwarming. The video provides a glimpse of ISS’s interior and the view out the window. In Part 3, “Coming down to Earth”, he captured the activities and responsibilities of preparing the Soyuz, the Russian return capsule. He chronicled the detail that astronauts follow to prepare for reentry. His description of his 54 minute descent is so vivid; you’re right there with him. Hadfield’s quest for space inspires. His pursuits galvanize the reader to find and harness the power of their own dreams. His recollections and descriptions of his mindset are illuminating. His steady resolve on his serpentine career path and focus are what propelled him into space. Hatfield’s book is not just a “how to guide” for a would-be astronaut but more importantly, a dreamer’s guide to victory.

Fantastic Four Director: Josh Trank

The Movies by Matthew Phillips facebook.com/mattbillups
Mission: Impossible Rogue Nation
Director: Christopher McQuarrie Stars: Tom Cruise, Simon Pegg, Rebecca Ferguson
Ethan Hunt (Cruise) and the entire IMF (Impossible Mission Force) are dissolved and on the run when a group of terrorist spies begin killing off agents. When “Ghost Protocol” came out, it seemed that Cruise was entering the old guy stages of his character. But that is simply not true in “Rogue Nation.” Huge credit to Cruise who once again does all his own stunts, making every scene he’s in that much more exciting. Previous cast members Jeremy Renner and Ving Rhames return in assisting Hunt and company. Pegg plays a bigger role this time as the tech geek, providing most of the welltimed laughs. The set pieces are extravagant, the acting is
superb, and the story is solid. The action scenes are thrilling and unpredictable. Between all the chases and explosions, there are a few exposition scenes with characters revealing their motives. They use manipulation which
can get repetitive with spy thrillers as nothing’s ever black and white. The gadgets are as ingenious as ever, the action is sleek and the plot is incredibly entertaining. This a spy thriller that would make James Bond blush. Grade: B+
Four intelligent youths (Teller, Mara, Jordan) create a machine that allows them to teleport to a strange new world, inadvertently giving them unique powers. The cast and their acting is the only thing that stands out. Unfortunately, they are downgraded because of a bad script. Talented young actor Teller is the only one with any glimmer of personality. Aside from that, there’s no attachment to the characters and absolutely no chemistry amongst them. They’re supposed to be a group of characters that join together to be heroes. Instead, they’re displayed as gifted individuals working for the government going on covert missions. When they finally do become a group, it’s far too late into the movie for audiences to care. The previous “Fantastic Four” films were silly, fun movies that
played out like colorful comic book stories. The new film is just the opposite. It’s trying too hard to be dark and gritty, resembling a more serious and realistic graphic novel. Ironically, Trank directed a movie a few years ago called “Chronicle”. It told a similar story with the exception being that it had everything this sci-fi reboot didn’t- characters with actual character. Grade: D
just one person but rather all three individuals. It spotlights their collaborations together. It documents the break-up, and then follows them down their own unique paths, exploring many of the ups and downs of their lives. Credit goes to Jackson for embodying his real life father with both his look and personality. Gray uses all elements of his directorial style, from the
Straight Outta Compton
comedy and camaraderie seen in “Friday” and “The Italian Job” to the drama and serious confrontation expressed in “The Negotiator.” Establishing the group’s musical influence, Gray delivers one of the best biopics, deserving to stand with the likes of “The Temptations” and “Jersey Boys”. “Straight Outta Compton” fleshes out not only the group but also the group’s manager. Regardless of race or choice of music, “Compton” tells an entertaining story about three individuals with a dream and how that dream changed the face of music history. Grade: A

Inquire of Juliet By Juliet Pomodoro
Ciao mio amore. Romeo’s still at large, or so he tells everyone. He was in Poland. Sadly, he was deported for importing sausage into the wife of a very important official. You must confide in me for now. I will keep your deepest darkest secrets and publish them here.
Dear Juliet,
Dear Bethany,
My wife went to the antique store and bought us a secondhand bed. It’s beautiful and well made but it gives me the creeps. I have no idea who slept in it. Who knows how much mileage it has on it?
Do you want someone dragging their equipment in and out your back door? Decide if you want a breezeway or a dead end.
Tom, Palm Bay
My girlfriend and I spend every night at home. She wants to save up for a new car but I want us to go on a dream trip to Australia. How do I change her mind?
Tommy, how much mileage do you have? Beautiful, wellmade, and yours? Enjoy. Keep the bed too.
Dear Juliet, My house was built in the 1950s and my hunky plumber has been snaking my pipes regularly. We spend so much time together and really enjoy each other’s company. Recently he’s been wanting access to my rear entrance. I’m not sure if want to give him back door privileges. He’s very persuasive and keeps trying to sweet talk me. I don’t want to be a party pooper. What can I do?
Bethany, Titusville
Dear Juliet,
Kevin, Cape Canaveral Dear Kevin, If you want her to go down under, you need to be nice. Buy her dinner and present her with two tickets to paradise.
Dear Jan, Looking is not cheating. Every time he stares at a cheesecake, you zero in on a beefcake. What about that handsome young waiter serving you? I bet he won’t mind flirting. Make your husband worry about the size of his tip.
Dear Juliet,
My husband turned 35 and suddenly stopped landscaping his hedge. At first I didn’t think it was a big deal but now it’s become a problem when I try to go downstairs. Any ideas?
Ana, Cocoa Ana, tell him he needs to stop beating around his bush and start doing some landscaping. It’s a problem if you can’t see through the brush. Later, if you’re still choking on Spanish moss put your foot down, grab some clippers and do it yourself.
Dear Juliet,
My husband always rubbernecks whenever pretty girls walk by. It gets really annoying in restaurants. Any ideas on how to keep his eyes on his own dessert?
