YOUR FAIRY CLOTHES MOTHER CLEO LACEY SAY'S DON’T STRUGGLE E WIT I H DECISIONS ABOUT JEWELLERY, WITH THE RIGHT KNOWLEDGE; THERE IS R RE EALLY NO NEED TO BE SCARED. HERE ARE SOME TOP TIPS ABOUT HOW BEST TO O ACCESSORISE WITH THE SPARKLY STUFF. REMEMBER IT’S ALL ABOUT HA AVIN NG FUN!
TO BOLDLY GO…. tatement pieces of jewellery are a fantastic way of drawing a person’s eye to your best features. My advice is only to wear one piece at a time, less is more… A statement necklace is a must if you have a good décolletage, or when trying to hide your tummy or thighs. It is a clever way of drawing the eye to that part of you while detracting from the bits you’re not so keen on. Whatever body shape you are, a statement necklace is a fantastic accessory to have and can really update a plain or last season top. It’s also a great way to introduce colour into your outfits and doesn’t have to break the bank. Statement earrings are great if your dress or top has a lot of detail on it, a necklace would be too busy, so big and bold earrings are a great accessory. They are also perfect if you have a nice neck or wear your hair up; as again’ it will draw the eye to that area of you.

Pronounced ‘Ray Key’, it teaches – that this is the energy which ‘fills the Universe and is necessary to sustain life and maintain balance within the body’s system’. Practitioners believe every cell within the body has its own intelligence and internal order, so when assisted by the universal energy, knows what to do to bring you to a state of well-being. It is non-intrusive, deeply relaxing and we believe for the highest good, and promotes well-being for all, not just if you are ill. Our busy lifestyles are pushing us harder and longer, and often making us ill in the process, that is where Celestial Healing can help. Reiki works well in conjunction with other therapies such as Crystal Healing and massage too. ALTERNATIVE THERAPIES TREAT THE WHOLE PERSON INSTEAD OF JUST ONE SYMPTOM. THERE ARE MANY DIFFERENT NAMES FOR IT, SUCH AS: COMPLEMENTARY THERAPY, ALTERNATIVE THERAPY, ALTERNATIVE MEDICINE AND HOLISTIC THERAPY. SOME EXAMPLES ARE: ACUPUNCTURE, AROMATHERAPY, HERBAL MEDICINE, HOMEOPATHY, HOLISTIC MASSAGE, NATUROPATHY, CHIROPRACTIC AND OSTEOPATHY, REIKI AND YOGA. ACUPUNCTURE It is the insertion of very thin needles into your skin at specific points on the body, and to various depths. There are no side effects and is used for: pain relief, alleviating nausea caused by chemotherapy, treating low back pain, fibromyalgia, migraines, hypertension, and osteoarthritis it is also used in addiction therapies, for smoking and other Drug treatment.
AROMATHERAPY The National Association of Holistic Aromatherapy explains it as: “the art and science of using naturally extracted aromatic essences from plants to balance harmonise and promote the health of body, mind and spirit.” The oils are used on the skin via massage, inhaled directly from a handkerchief, infused into the skin in a hot bath, or by infusing the room with an oil burner. HOLISTIC THERAPIST, JULIA THOMPSON INVITES BEACON EDITOR KAREN DENCH ALONG TO EXPERIENCE A WONDERFULLY CALMING REFLEXOLOGY TREATMENT AT MARKET HARBOROUGH’S ARCHWAY HOUSE
5HāH[ OLOGY
eing a huge fan of alternative therapies, I was thrilled to have the opportunity of a taster reflexology session recently, especially as I had never had experienced one before. Reflexology is a holistic therapy based on the belief that there are points on the feet – reflexes – that correspond to organs and systems within the body. By stimulating these reflexes with light pressure, the aim of the reflexologist is to restore balance by activating the body’s own self-healing processes. Originally qualifying as a reflexologist and reiki healer in 1995, Julia has been at Archway House since 1997, so I was quite literally in great hands. The initial consultation and session lasted about an hour and a half, and began with Julia establishing some general background information about my overall health, fitness and well-being, before getting started on the actual treatment. As with all therapies, each treatment is completely individual; it’s your time, your treatment, and entirely up to you how you approach it and how much or little you choose
B
to interact with your therapist. For me, as Julia gently worked from foot to foot, I could feel my whole body sink further into the bed, my muscles soften and I found myself quietly drifting off. With the demands that are upon us in our everyday lives, sometimes we forget how to relax and allow ourselves to ‘just be still’. There is something extremely calming about reflexology that somehow manages to switch off the internal chatter in our minds, that can often distract us from being completely restful. Having a reflexology treatment is a deeply relaxing and soothing experience, and mine certainly left me feeling incredibly peaceful and serene afterwards - it is definitely something I want to introduce on a more regular basis, and I highly recommend it as an effective form of stress relief. Shared PARENTAL LEAVE
THE LATEST RIGHTS FOR NEW AND EXPECTANT PARENTS, BY LOCAL LAW FIRM BRAY & BRAY’S EMPLOYMENT LAW SPECIALIST IAN LEWIS. What is Shared Parental Leave? Shared Parental Leave (SPL) is a new legal entitlement that came into place on 5 April 2015, with the purpose of giving parents a choice about who looks after their child in the first year after it is born or adopted. How does SPL work? Mothers who are already entitled to maternity and adoption rights can now choose to end this early, to be exchanged for Shared Parental Leave and pay. The mother and father are then able to make a decision about how they wish to share this entitlement. If mothers are eligible for SPL, they will now be able to share up to 50 weeks of maternity leave and 37 weeks of statutory maternity pay, with their partner. How do you know if you are eligible for SPL? For either parent to be eligible for SPL, you must be employed as an employee and must pass the continuity of employment test. The other partner must pass the employment and earnings test. What is the continuity of employment test? This is where a parent must have been working for the same employer for at least 26 weeks before the week that the child is due to be born or adopted. They must also still be employed during the first week that SPL is taken. What is the employment and earnings test? A parent has to have worked a minimum of 26 weeks out of the 66 weeks leading up to the due date of the child’s arrival. They must also have earned above the maternity allowance threshold of £30 per week during 13 of the 66 weeks.
There are also rules which allow self-employed parents to qualify for SPL, for example if the mother is an eligible employee, whilst the father is actively working in a self-employed capacity. How should employees request SPL? A mother will need to give a minimum of 8 weeks’ notice to cut short her maternity leave in order to begin SPL. At around the same time (at least 8 weeks before parents would like SPL to begin) both parents must submit a notice of entitlement stating their intention to take SPL and requesting to book this time off. How flexible is SPL? An important point is that mothers must complete a compulsory 2 weeks of maternity leave before SPL can commence. Fathers should also take their standard paternity leave before SPL is due to start, otherwise they will lose this entitlement as soon as SPL commences. When can SPL be taken? SPL can be taken in one continuous period of up to 50 weeks, or in up to three separate periods, which can be as short as a week each. Can employers refuse SPL requests? As long as parents are eligible for SPL and both the mother and father have given the proper notices to their employers within sufficient time, employers are not able to refuse requests for SPL, for leave over a continuous period. Expert advice about maternity and paternity rights For legal advice on maternity and paternity rights including leave entitlement, pay and issues around going back to work, you can contact me with any questions you may have, via email on idlewis@braybray.co.uk or by calling 0116 254 8871.

aving lived in a number of countries one notices national peculiarities and one of them is this: the UK is awash with charity-related activity. Our high streets are filled with charity shops; our TV screens with high profile fundraising events; our universities have wild rag weeks in the name of raising money to help others; our (my) post is mainly from charities offering “free” pens and endless coasters in exchange for vital funds; and, of course, there is a veritable proliferation of sponsored sporting events. Go to France and the high street has as many pharmacies as a British town centre has charity shops, the argument being that it’s the state’s job to support those who are less well off than ourselves (but that’s another story…). The fact remains that sponsored sporting events have grown exponentially over the last decade or so, and are so varied – ranging from the gentle to the outright dangerously gruelling – that they can, and do, literally cater for everyone. So why this popularity? There is no doubt that taking part in an event for a specific cause gives far more meaning to one’s training. Preparing for a marathon, or going from entirely sedentary to a respectable 5k becomes an infinitely more focused and rewarding process if the goal has more depth to it than simply crossing the finishing line. I take running as an example, because I am hopeless at it and happen to dislike

every step of it (give me a Moon Walk any day!) – throw a charitable cause that is close to my heart into the mix and it will quite literally drive me forwards step by step. After all, I can hardly let down all my sponsors, not to mention the charity I am supporting. In 2014 one of the mums who used to do my classes ran the London Marathon and raised a phenomenal sum of money for charity. Only a few weeks ago she said to me that looking back on things she has no idea how she did it: the hours and hours of training in the rain, the cold, the pitch dark, all with two little children to look after and a business to run. That has to be the motivating power of fitness with a charitable goal at its very heart. And it is, I believe, because we have a heart and because fundamentally, as human beings we like to feel that we are helping others. So taking part in sponsored sporting events makes us feel good both spiritually and physically. Charities are right to tap into this deep-seated desire of ours. It’s a win-win situation: we have fun, get fit, and become part of a community all whilst raising money for a whole range of worthy causes that rely on our generosity to carry out the phenomenal work they do. So what charity will you be supporting and what sporting event will you be training for in its name? How about this one: local charity Alex’s Wish has got its London to Paris Cycle Ride challenge coming up soon…

When it comes to choosing floor and wall tiles there are a vast range of materials available. Within the genre of natural stone tiles you are able to select from Limestone, Travertine, Marble, Slate, Quartzite and Sandstone which range in price from ÂŁ14 to ÂŁ130 per square meter. Manmade tiles are also available in an eclectic array of finishes and shades. Porcelain tiles are a real
staple at the moment within the world of design and architecture. The more traditional full bodied porcelain range in simple beige, black, cream and grey tones are something always worth considering. If you are wanting to be more adventurous then a wood effect porcelain would be a great option to consider. With wood effect porcelain you have the natural grain

for the walls and a contrasting honed or tumbled finish for the floor, which can work really well. Another popular type of stone flooring is Travertine tiles which come in many different ranges and finishes. Ensure you choose a premium quality travertine for high traffic areas as unfortunately there are travertines on the market which won’t stand up to busy family life and give travertine a bad reputation. Remember a stone floor is an investment so make sure you choose the right one which will stand the test of time.
important to have the floor prepared and installed correctly. Whilst recommended, you need not always hire a tradesman, as long as a competent DIY-er knows the basic rules of tiling then undergoing a tiling project, including using natural stone is something that can be done. It is important to use all of the correct materials, when selecting an adhesive it is important to use a flexible one, allowing for slight movement in the floor. Tiles should always be laid on a full bed of adhesive rather than using a ‘dot and dab’ method, as this completely supports the tiles, minimising the chance of cracks developing. The chosen grout needs to reflect the grout colour and size that you require and consider the use of Deco matting, a rubber membrane installed below the tiles, recommended in new builds again to allow for subtle movement in the floor.
TO ATTAIN A CONTEMPORARY LOOK, A HONED OR POLISHED FINISHED TILE WITH A STRAIGHT EDGE, ARE WHAT THE READERS SHOULD BE CONSIDERING.
Many different tile finishes are available with each one contributing to the overall look of a project. To attain a contemporary look, a honed or polished finished tile with a straight edge, are what the readers should be considering. These tiles can be laid with a narrow grout line to give a sleek, almost seamless finish to the floor.
of wooden flooring but with the sustainability of a manmade tile. Selecting the correct material for your project is something that needs careful consideration. Marble is great for bathrooms as it exudes luxury and offers easy care, as most have a smooth, wipe clean surface. If using a polished marble on the floor, however, we would advise people to be cautious, as they can become slippery when wet. Many customers therefore choose a polished marble
A farmhouse look can be achieved using much larger flagstones with a tumbled edge and surface, along with a much wider grout joint. The texture and size of flagstones gives the rustic appearance of a floor that has been down for decades. We have used lots of our flagstone ranges in and around Cotes Mill which suit the era of the property perfectly. For a period style to be achieved, the use of quarry tiles is always very popular with our customers in kitchens and utilities alike. To create a chequerboard finish using two different coloured quarry tiles such as black and pinot, will help create a traditional finish, well suited to Victorian town houses. Regarding the durability and sustainability of your floor it is
Customers love low maintenance flooring and you should not fear the maintenance of natural stone. Whilst all natural stone needs to be sealed to protect it from staining this is a quick and easy process. We recommend investing in a high quality sealer such as SealaStone, which leaves the stone looking natural and protects it for 5-7 years. All of our products are available to view alongside deVOL Kitchens at our Cotes Mill showroom, and our friendly and knowledgeable staff are on hand to answer any questions you may have. TO PROTECT YOURSELF e all like to think that getting ill with cancer for example, or even dying won’t happen to us, but sadly experience shows that it can and does happen. You may be surprised to learn that Legal and Generals Critical Illness claims statistics for 2013 show: The average age of people who made claims in 2013 for conditions such as cancer, stroke, MS and heart attacks was just 47 years old. The average age of claimants for conditions such as severe back pain and long term depression was just 42 years of age in 2013.

Life Insurance No one knows what the future holds, but if you were to die, how would your family cope financially? Could they pay the mortgage and other household bills? What about childcare costs? Having enough life assurance in place could help ease the financial strain on your family at an already difficult time.

Critical Illness. It’s not a nice thought but if you were diagnosed with a critical illness could your family cope financially? Loss of earnings could affect your family’s lifestyle and how they pay mortgage
“GETTING COVER IS SIMPLE AND EASY… IT COULD HELP PROTECT YOU AND YOUR FAMILY” repayments and meet their daily living expenses. What’s more, because state provision is minimal, your cost of living and the additional burden of taking time to recover could soon eat up your hard earned savings. Critical illness cover could help. It pays a lump sum or monthly benefit, depending on the plan you chose, if you were to be diagnosed with one of our critical illnesses during the policy term and are eligible to claim. The cover could help protect you and your family against financial difficulty and help you maintain your current lifestyle.
Income Protection One of the main reasons people choose to not take out income protection cover is because they think their employer or the state will take care of them if they are unable to work. When looking at the current state benefit payments, we all know that some clients couldn’t survive on the state benefits alone. An independent study conducted by Legal and General in May 2014 concluded that people in the UK have on average 29 day deadline until savings run out. Take Action Now Getting cover is simple and easy. Contact a credible broker who will provide you the opportunity to talk through your specific protection cover needs and identify the right policy for you and your budget. JAMES MARTIN HAS BEEN A REAL INSPIR ATION TO GOOD OLD BRITISH COOKING , AND WE SEE HIM OFTEN ON THE T V COOKING SHOWS; BUT WHAT ELSE DOES HE DO, AND WHERE DOES HE DO IT? • Cod loin, oyster tartare, bitter lemon purée, potato scallop • Caramelised cauliflower cheese, Quicke’s cheddar rarebit, black truffle
Here is an ‘inside peek’ at our favourite Chef, and where you can go to try out his renowned cooking for yourself: Visit his restaurant James has his own brand of restaurant called James Martin Manchester, and you can book a table via his website and spend an evening sampling his wonderful recipes. It is located at 2 Watson Street, Manchester, M3 4LP, t: 0161 828 0345, or e: jamesmartin@manchester235.com and is open every day from 5pm - 11pm. The theme of his dishes is all about modern British cuisine, and it opened in September 2013 inside the Manchester235 Casino. The rustic decor is comforting and not overly ostentatious and his menu’s feature lots of locally sourced and seasonal ingredients. Here is an example of his
Sunday Roast Menu: TO START • Spring pea velouté, confit egg yolk • Blow torched mackerel, pickled beets, horseradish mousse • Manchester egg, smoked apple TO FOLLOW • Roast Herdwick lamb, braised faggot, dripping potatoes, Yorkshire pudding, roasting juices

TO FINISH • Sticky toffee pudding, condensed milk ice cream • Eton mess – English strawberries, vanilla cream • Selection of British cheeses, pickled pear, celery wafer and water biscuits
2 Courses £20 Or 3 Courses £25 The blow torched mackerel looks interesting and caramelised cauliflower cheese is certainly a new take on a fairly dull and underused vegetable. It’s good to see the Eton mess listed with proper English strawberries, which we imagine will be dripping with sticky meringue and stuck together beautifully with the vanilla cream. To see more or make a reservation, just pop this into your iPad: jamesmartinchef.co.uk Personal Picnics James is also creating beautiful hand prepared picnics that can be delivered to any address in London. Unfortunately not in Leicester yet, but if you make a day trip to London this summer, you can have a personalised James Martin picnic delivered to you in St James’s Park, or even London Zoo! We think it’s a great idea, especially if you need to cater for any unusual dietary needs, and what a fabulous way to impress clients this summer if you need to go to London for a long meeting, it can be delivered to their offices…
Cooking you a Gourmet meal at home Or why not go the whole hog, and let James cook a personal gourmet meal just for you and your dinner party guests delivered to your door? Now that would give you a kudos that would be hard to beat… James has created a fantastic range of meals that he is understandably very proud of. His trademark company is called ‘Life, Fork & Spoon’ and it concentrates on top quality food that you can experience at home, without having to go out to a restaurant or spend hours preparing everything from scratch. If the lamb shank in red wine and rosemary followed by white chocolate and whiskey bread and butter pudding is anything to go by, this would certainly be something to put on your bucket list of once in a lifetime experiences. No wonder that James is so hard to catch up with these days, but his inspirational cooking really is a foodie delight, and one that is certainly possible to experience at first hand. James is proving that English cooking is anything but dull, and rewriting the rule books for us by revamping our tired old roast dinners in brand new and exciting ways…

BELLISSIMO Since the end of World War II, Italy has been a powerhouse of both style and culture, not to mention its incredibly sophisticated cocktails. With a great wealth of Italian artists and musicians indulging in this popular tradition of sorts, cocktail recipes began to appear from all corners of the country, creating an evening buzz during the Summer months. Many years later, Italy is still at the forefront of evening culture in Europe and across the world from the casual Frangelico Iced Coffee to the world-famous Bellini, you’ll want to enjoy the beverages and bars of Rome or Venice on your next city break.

f you’re flying to your destination, be aware of the airline’s restrictions on the weight and size of your baggage to avoid those pricey excess luggage charges. The weight of your luggage is largely affected by what material it is made from. Hard outer shells offer the best protection for any fragile items you might be packing. However, these tend to be heavier, which could limit how much you can pack if travelling by plane. Soft outer shells are the most lightweight and expandable, but your contents, and the luggage itself, will be more vulnerable to damage. Most manufacturers produce suitcases with four wheels that allow 360° rolling for easy manoeuvrability on smooth surfaces. However, if you’re going to be pulling your suitcase across rougher grounds, two-wheeled cases with larger
I
wheels can be easier to control. Make sure the handle extends to a length that is comfortable for you and also locks down fully so it won’t get damaged. Look for luggage with smaller grip handles on the sides for easier lifting, and even if it doesn’t match your outfit, a bright suitcase will be far easier to spot on an airport carousel! A long warranty is a good indication that the manufacturer believes in its product. It’s more cost effective to invest in quality luggage, as it will last you for years to come. Brands such as American Tourister, Knomo and Samsonite are all good choices. And last but not least, remember to always try before you buy to ensure that you can pull and lift the suitcase easily and comfortably.

RHS AWARD WINNER FRANCES HUNT, OF GOSCOTE NURSERIES, WHO GROW AND SOURCE RARE AND UNUSUAL PLANTS HERE IN THE HEART OF LEICESTERSHIRE, TALKS ABOUT GARDENING FOR NOVICES.
From the
potting shed At last we can get out and enjoy the garden! pring was a little slow this year for us impatient gardeners, willing the plants to push up through the soil. But now, we are really in the thick of it and can get stuck into all of those jobs that can only be done when the risk of frost has passed. For the ardent ‘allotmenteers’ and vegetable gardeners; there is a long list of jobs that need to be done. Now is the time to plant hardened-off seedlings out into the plot. Make sure you plant the seedlings in a well-watered trench, as they do have a tendency to ‘flop’ with the shock of being let loose out into the big wild world.

REMEMBER TO PROTECT AGAINST SLUGS It is always a huge disappointment after tending those dainty little seedlings in the greenhouse or window sill, only to find in one night that the whole row has been massacred by the slimy creatures.
ASPARAGUS ADVICE If you are lucky enough to have some Asparagus plants, do remember that they need to be treated with care for the first few years after planting, however tempting it is to nip the

emerging buds off to have with butter for dinner. Even the second year after planting, be gentle with the harvesting quantity, and they will reward you for years to come.
BATTLING THE WEEDS An endless task at this time of year for both ‘ornamental’ and ‘edible’ gardeners is staying on top of the weeds. As they say: “One year’s seed is seven years’ weed”, so do try and pounce on the little critters before they get their flower power on. There is another way to tackle weeds that does not involve lifting a finger. I am a great advocate of planting up bare soil; using low, carpet forming perennials between shrubs and taller perennials really does reduce the maintenance in gardens. There are tons of absolutely fantastic plants that can really help you out in this instance; even if the weeds do manage to find a little spot, there is so much other interest within the bed, that
you will barely notice them. Always plant in groups of 3 (or 5 in larger gardens) to give the plants a chance to really ‘wow’.
HERE ARE SOME GREAT PERFORMERS TO LOOK AT: Heuchera- purple leaved or pale yellow leaved: These are a fantastic plant, pushing through in the spring with deep purple or lime green foliage. If you are growing in pots, watch out for Vine Weevil grubs that eat away at the roots within a matter of days. After a mild winter, you might want to treat the pots with a vine weevil killer as a prevention treatment. Alchemilla mollis: This plant is the marmite of the horticultural world. Some people seriously loathe it. I think it is great for many reasons. It has scallop shaped leaves, which hold rain drops in a way that just makes you want to run for the camera. Fine sprays of foamy lime green flowers in late

DERBY DAY The first Saturday in June is known as Derby Day, the traditional time of year to prune or shape Box. It is important to wait until the risk of frost has passed to do this task; all too often, any new, fresh foliage produced as a result of a haircut, becomes browned by any late May frosts. A great tip for pruning Box balls is to begin by looking down on the ball from above, creating a circular shape by reducing the side growth before trying to tackle the sphere shape itself.
THE CHELSEA CHOP With the Chelsea Flower Show at the end of May, another tip to prolong the interest within the garden is the ‘Chelsea Chop’, performed on selected perennials after the Chelsea Flower Show. It seems such a shame to reduce the height of perennials that you have been waiting patiently to grow all Spring, but, if you are brave enough, reduce the top growth by half to create plants that flower slightly later in the summer, and that have a better ‘form’, for example, Sedum, or Ice Plants, have a tendency to ‘flop’ in the centre, which is eradicated with a well-timed Chelsea Chop! This tip works brilliantly on Sedum, Echinacea, Rudbekia, Helenium, and Asters, in fact, any plants which flower twice in a season, but don’t try it on Peonies or Irises, or anything spring, forming the perfect edging for a border. People find

that if you have it one place in the garden, it is bound to pop up in a few other places. But why not, let it spread around in my view!
PEOPLE FIND THAT IF YOU HAVE IT ONE PLACE IN THE GARDEN, IT IS BOUND TO POP UP IN A FEW OTHER PLACES. BUT WHY NOT, LET IT SPREAD AROUND IN MY VIEW! Nepeta musinii: Also known as Catmint, this lovely ground

smothering perennial has small rounded silver grey leaves, and absolutely masses of pale purple flowers throughout the spring. If you like Lavender, you’ll love this. Perennial Geraniums: The options are endless ranging in colour from blue, to pink, to the brightest magenta. You can even find some with a dark purple leaf called ‘Espresso’, which looks great against the pale pink flowers when they emerge. Perennial geraniums do vary vastly in size, so if you do go for a more gangly variety like ‘Ann Folkard’, do be aware that you can only get away with a few plants.

THIS ISSUE WE ASK JOSEPH PAGE, OF JOE’S LAWN CARE HOW TO HELP US GET THE BEST FROM OUR GARDENING PROJECTS; IN PARTICULAR OUR MOWING.
J
JUST YOUR AVERA A
t’s May and your lawn grasses will have started growing as the soil warms up, so your mowing needs to start in earnest. Regular mowing is a vital part of lawn care. A quick whiz with a sharp and well-adjusted mower will only take you a few minutes if you do the job every week. Mowing as often as you can will encourage the fine grasses and allow the grass enough energy to thicken up to be an area to be proud of.
I
Lawn cutting can be simplified into the following rules: • Never more than 1/3rd off in any one cut • Mow frequently – weekly is best when the lawn is actively growing • Check your mower regularly for cutting height and blade sharpness • Regardless of your mower’s cutting action being Cylinder, Rotary y or Ho Hover v , the principles rem em main th he same sam ame a me m e.
Why Mow Little and Often? For many of us little and often means once a week. This will produce a much denser and more aspirational turf than if your grass cutting is every two weeks. A dense turf is the best looking and a great form of natural weed control as it prevents weed seeds from contact with the soil. If the seed doesn’t contact the soil then there is a very good chance that no weed grows; perfect!
The ‘One Third Rule’ Never remove more than one third of the grass blade on any one mowing. Therefore, if your lawn mower is set for a 3cm (1”) cut then you must mow at or before the grass gets to 4cm (1½”) whether that's 4 days or 8 days between cuts. Regardless of the mowing height, we recommend never leave your lawn more than 10 to 14 days between cuts. The chances are that if it is very dry in the summer you won’t need to cut the grass too often, as there will be little growth. However, don’t go over two weeks between cuts because some weed grasses will take advantage of the lack of lawn mowing and spread or seed profusely. | MOTORS AN DREW WRIG HT TAKES A DETAILED LOOK AT HYUNDAI’S NE W GENERATION I20
V Hyundai’s all-new i20 is a real head-turner
ou may think of Hyundai as a recent brand but in fact, the Hyundai Motor Company was founded in 1967 and has been selling vehicles in the UK since 1982. It is just in the last handful of years though that it has made attractive cars to challenge the European designs. The new generation i20 has adopted a low front with slender upper grill and deep lower air intake to give it a strong face. Slender headlights flow into the crisp, high shoulder line. This gives the car a taught appearance and the line is carried through into the attractive rear LED light clusters. The back pillar – bold, black and glossy – is contemporary and smart. The i20’s overall appearance, especially with the full length glass roof (standard on the Premium SE trim) is a neat but conservative style. The i20 has a fairly simple layout inside. It isn’t cutting edge but good-looking, well-ordered and effective. What it does have on higher model specifications is a substantial mount
Y
on top of the dash to hold a mobile phone, thereby adding navigation and music streaming capability via Bluetooth. The top end Nav trim also has a DAB radio as standard. Materials have come on leaps and bounds since Hyundai’s of old: Some of the plastics aren’t as silky smooth as their German counterparts; but refinement is good and the blue backlit controls are rather striking. We’d avoid the beige (cost-free) dashboard and seat options but black works well. Our press car is in Premium SE specification and has plenty of toys with everything from heated steering wheel and climate control to all-round parking sensors and cruise control. The basic models are still competitively priced and specified. Don’t overlook Hyundai’s more glamorous side with its i20 World Rally Car: We mention this not just because of a class win in Germany last year or for its striking graphics, but because the road-going version has clearly learned a few tips and tricks from its extreme sibling by way of some rather good road manners. Ride is a tad firm but winding up even the smallest engine, the new generation i20 is certainly a fun drive. The little 1.2 petrol unit is lively and civilised - more than adequate around town - but for motorway miles, we’d pick the 1.4 petrol or 1.4 diesel. The i20 starts at £10,695. Price as tested: £14,725.

Be transported to Japan as the Company presents a new adaptation of its much-loved and heartbreakingly tragic Madame Butterfly. The inspiration for the world famous musical Miss Saigon, Madame Butterfly is the story of the doomed love affair between an American Naval Lieutenant and his young Japanese bride, Butterfly. Madly in love and prepared to sacrifice everything, Butterfly’s world falls apart when she is abandoned and betrayed. Perpetuum Mobile (Perpetual Motion) doesn’t tell a story but does show off the dancers at their athletic best. The incredible strength and prowess of Northern Ballet’s dancers will leave you breathless.

RATCLIFFE COLLEGE WELCOMES HRH THE DUKE OF GLOUCESTER TO OPEN NEW PREPARATORY SCHOOL atcliffe College was delighted to welcome HRH The Duke of Gloucester to officially open their new Preparatory School on Thursday. The College has invested £4.5 million in a new, state-of-the-art building for its Junior pupils, which opened its doors last September. Ratcliffe College Preparatory School, as the new school is now known, provides the latest and best technology and teaching facilities for children aged 3-11 years, in the safe, secure and beautiful setting of the College’s 200-acre estate in North Leicestershire on the A46. The Duke was met by Headmaster, Mr Gareth Lloyd, Preparatory School Headmaster, Father Christopher Cann, and Lord Mayor and Lady Mayoress of Charnwood, together with Governors and staff, and was greeted enthusiastically by the Preparatory School pupils singing “I Believe”. Architect, Mr David Franklin, who designed the new building, talked about his project with the Duke, who took a great interest, having previously trained in Architecture. This was followed by a tour of the new building, where the Duke enjoyed interacting with pupils as they baked chocolate brownies in the Science and Food Technology Classroom, designed Puginesque tiles in the bespoke Arts and Crafts Studio, and performed Samba Drums in the Music Room. Headmaster, Mr Gareth Lloyd said, “We have been honoured by presence of HRH The Duke of Gloucester today. It has been wonderful to share with him the vibrancy of this exceptional community within this award-winning facility!”
