With less than 8 weeks to go until the big day, we’ve brought you everything you could possibly need to ensure you are fully prepared for all the seasonal festivities ahead. Whether it’s inspiration for some gorgeous gifts (cue Hayley Sparkes and her top beauty picks on pgs 14-15), or some beautiful decorations to adorn your tree and home from John Lewis, (pg 29), this issue certainly is brimming with Christmas crackers. The holiday season can however fill many of us with dread at the mere prospect of all the planning involved! So it’s time to stop stress in its tracks and adopt a fresh, calm approach – which is exactly where Anisha Mistry steps in, as she shares with us her great time-saving tips in the kitchen – guaranteed to make your Christmas entertaining hassle-free. The even better news is, we’re giving you a serious head start to achieving your ‘hassle-free’ Christmas by offering one lucky Beacon reader the chance to win a free-range Turkey, courtesy of Fosse Meadows Farm, so be sure to enter our competition on pg 67. The competitions continue this edition with a wonderful hamper up for grabs, for your four-legged friend worth £100 from Natural World (pg 25) plus the opportunity to bag 2 x tickets to see Leicester Tigers v Northampton Saints on January 28th thanks to our very good friends at Leicester Tigers (pg 76). And as a little added extra for the sport-lovers out there, we asked sports writer Phil Holloway to take a look back at all the events and successes the UK has experienced throughout 2016.

EXERCISE AS

HEALTH, FITNESS & WELLBEING |

OUR BRAINS ARE NO DIFFERENT TO REST OF THE MUSCLES IN OUR BODIES – WE EITHER USE IT OR YOU LOSE IT! THIS ISSUE JO HELCKÉ UNCOVERS THE POSITIVE EFFECTS & BENEFITS PHYSICAL EXERCISE, ESPECIALLY AEROBIC EXERCISE, HAS ON OUR BRAIN FUNCTION

G

iven my lack of interest in Sudoku (OK perhaps I should rephrase that as my lack of comprehension of Sudoku), I am very keen on the idea that regular exercise can protect me not only from physical but also mental decline. Now whilst I can see myself cultivating an interest in verbal puzzles one day – in a distant future when I actually have a moment to sit down and relax – I’m pretty sure that non-verbal reasoning is never really going to float my boat. But in the meantime it reassures me to think that keeping physically active is somehow doing my brain good, not least because I can quite clearly remember how dementia affected my grandmother over the years. As I get older I realise that when we are very young we really do feel invincible and it is only on reaching middle age that the reality of one’s fragility and mortality truly sinks in. We all know that regular exercise protects the body from many of the scourges of sedentary society, such as type-2 diabetes and heart disease. We are also familiar with the fact that exercise can be very effective when it comes to emotional well-being but it is only relatively recently that research has been cited to support the effectiveness of exercise in maintaining and even enhancing brain function. Yet this is precisely what recent studies suggest. What is particularly exciting is that this research shows that exercise not only has a protective effect but also a regenerative one: in other words, certain types of exercise can actually increase the size of the hippocampus, which is the part of the brain associated with verbal memory and learning. Think about it: it means that we can actually improve on our cognitive function through exercise.

pain, can be directly linked back to spending far too long seated every day and not walking enough. Cardiovascular exercise also has indirect benefits on cognition: by reducing cortisol and stress levels and by improving your mood and sleep this, in turn, helps clear “brain fog” and keep you mentally agile. So there really are many good reasons for incorporating regular cardiovascular exercise into your life and it needn’t be a time consuming chore. I am in a phase of life that most people would classify as busy: my children are all growing up, they have increasingly complex activities and social lives yet they still live at home and need ferrying around. I also work full time. So regular exercise is always a challenge not least because I am determined that it shouldn’t drop to the bottom of the pile. So what can we all do to squeeze in our weekly dose of brain-enhancing cardiovascular exercise? One really helpful thing to remember is that the effects of exercise are cumulative. For busy people it’s reassuring to be told that you don’t have to carve out an hour of time for fitness. All the various bits and bobs you do throughout the day will add up and count. Here is what I accumulate throughout the day: • • • •

But it would appear that in this instance, not all forms of exercise are equal. I must confess that this was news to me and has made me think about my weekly spread of exercise. It would seem that it is cardiovascular exercise (the sort that gets the heart pumping) such as swimming, jogging, walking and cycling, rather than other forms, such as resistance and core stability, which helps train the brain. Much of the research in this field has focused on the effects of regular walking which is great news as it is a form of fitness that the majority of us can fit into our lives. Walking requires very little in the way of equipment, can start and end at our front door – great for the time poor – and is functional. We humans were designed to do lots of walking and many of the physical problems prevalent today, such as back

An early morning brisk walk with the puppy before the children are up: 20 minutes under my belt. A bike ride with my youngest to school and back twice a day: this adds up to a total of 35 minutes. On some days I cycle into town for a coffee which adds another 30 minutes to my daily tally. Late night brisk walk with the puppy and my eldest son so that we can catch up on the day’s news: a final 20 minutes’ worth of gentle cardio.

So without having to find any official extra time to exercise, I manage to include a generous hour of cardio into my life on most days of the week. And all of the above isn’t counting the pre-arranged exercise that I do at the gym and which I have to make time in the diary for. With a little imagination I really do believe that most of us can shoehorn enough brain-protecting, moodenhancing, heart-protecting cardiovascular exercise into our lives. There’s nothing quite like killing three birds with one stone when you’re short of time!

Dental Implants…the best solution to missing teeth

S

tate-of-the-art techniques mean it is no longer necessary for anyone to have gaps in their mouth or with poor fitting, uncomfortable dentures. One of the modern alternatives, and one which is proving increasingly popular, is to have Dental Implants.

What is a Dental Implant? A Dental Implant is a titanium ‘screw’ set into the jawbone. The Implants can be used to replace one or more teeth and to support dentures.

The benefits of Dental Implants • They can replace one or more of your teeth. • They can provide support for a bridge, so you do not have to wear a removable partial denture. • If you decide to have a denture, mini implants can be used as a support, making the denture more comfortable and stable to wear. • Implants are a permanent and aesthetically pleasing alternative to dentures. • Implants can stabilise the bite and jaw, helping to keep the bone integrity for longer and avoid the premature ageing effect which comes from losing teeth.

How long does implant treatment take? The Implant treatment is carried out in stages over a period of time and usually takes between 4 and 12 months from start to finish, depending on the complexity of the case.

Why should I choose Implant(s)? When choosing a dental surgeon to carry out implant surgery it is important that you, the patient, are confident in the dentist’s ability to undertake the treatment to the highest standard. It is always wise to choose a surgeon who regularly carries out the procedure. At Dentique, our highly qualified Implantologist, Mr Ian Clift, has over 25 years’ experience and has placed thousands of implants during that time. Mr Clift was one of the first dentists in the UK to receive a Diploma from the Royal College of Surgeons.

the Implant is then placed and left for a period of time. At no time will anyone notice that you are having treatment, you’ll never be left with gaps or temporary restoration. Once the Implant has integrated you will return to surgery for the restoration to begin, the dentist will fit a custom made crown which matches the size, shape and colour of your existing teeth. Your Dental Implant will look like a natural tooth, you should not notice any difference. All-in-all Dental Implants have a very positive effect in people’s lives, with most implants lasting upto 25 years. So why not take the first step in transforming your smile and give Dentique a call? Mention this article and we’ll book you in for an informal free initial consultation.

So I want an Implant, what happens next? Initially, an assessment is carried out, which involves X-rays and impressions. From the findings, written treatment plan outlining the stages in the process, along with the cost of the treatment is produced. Once you’ve accepted the treatment plan,

BEAUTY BY GERALDINE IS A BRAND NEW BEAUTY BUSINESS LOCATED IN MARKET HARBOROUGH, SET UP BY GERALDINE GREEN. BEING A LOCAL GIRL, BEACON EDITOR KAREN DENCH WAS INVITED ALONG FOR AN EVENING OF PAMPERING TO EXPERIENCE SOME OF TREATMENTS ON OFFER

Beauty by Geraldine

A HARBOROUGH a ve n

h

After decades of running the professional gauntlet and being caught up in the commercial rat race, Geraldine Green made the brave decision to change her career path entirely by trading in her occupation as a civil servant to embark on a new venture of her own and retrain as a beauty therapist. With a genuine passion for her new found vocation, coupled with an incredible drive to pursue her dream, Geraldine officially opened her salon doors in August and is delighted her business is now in full flow. Operating from her beautifully renovated, custom made salon at her home in Market Harborough, Geraldine offers a wide range of beauty treatments including facials, massages, waxing, manicures and pedicures with Jessica Geleration and spray tans. The careful consideration that has gone into creating a relaxing and tranquil environment is immediately evident as you walk into this beautifully chic little salon. Elegant touches are all around and calming sounds of the rainforest gently transport you into a peaceful mind-set, as you quietly await your treatment. I had a facial and a hot stone massage – both extremely relaxing. Geraldine uses quality products including the premium product range, dermalogica - which is renowned as one of the very best in the beauty industry, and leaves your skin feeling both rejuvenated and revitalised. The hot stone massage was a brand new experience for me having never had one, so this was the treatment I was most looking forward to trying. Well….all I can say is there’s a massage and then there’s a hot stone massage! For me this truly was the most enjoyable treatment I’ve had in a long time. The pressure and heat are controlled carefully and the sensation of the smooth warm stones on your skin is soothingly therapeutic melting away any muscular aches or tension. The premise behind hot stone massage therapy is that the direct heat of the stones relaxes muscles, allowing the therapist access to deeper muscle layers. Using hot stones (as opposed to hands alone), is said to increase the effectiveness of the massage by up to ten times, so that’s got to be good.

25% OFF MASSAGES AND FACIALS TILL 10TH FEBRUARY 10% OFF WAXING TILL THE 10TH FEBRUARY LOYALTY SCHEME IN PLACE FOR MASSAGES & PEDICURES

The treatment is approximately 1 hour although I’m certain we ran over – Geraldine is certainly not one for rushing her clients out the door, but instead concentrates her efforts on ensuring everyone leaves feeling utterly fabulous and stress-free – and I can personally vouch for the latter. I always say after having a beauty treatment, “I must do this more often” and then ultimately rarely stick to it, but we all deserve to make (and take) some time for ourselves on a regular basis. The benefits of doing so are significant both on physical and psychological levels. I am checking my diary now to accommodate my next hot stone treatment!

THE WIND IS CHILLIER, THE CLOUDS DARKER AND THE DAYLIGHT HOURS SHORTER; SUMMER HAS OFFICIALLY LEFT US AND IT'S TIME TO WRAP UP FOR THE COMING WINTER SEASON, BUT IS IT POSSIBLE TO KEEP WARM AND STILL LOOK STYLISH IN THE COLD WEATHER? FEAR NOT, YOUR FAIRY CLOTHES MOTHER, CLEO LACEY IS ON HAND WITH YOUR WINTER FASHION ACCESSORY FORECAST…

I

f your grandma was anything like mine, telling me that if I didn’t wear a hat I’ll lose 50% of my body heat through my head? I’m not sure if she was right or not, but wearing a hat throughout the winter is an essential for us Brits. Covering up is key to keeping warm. With the icy winds and freezing temperatures it is important to keep your head and ears toasty as it is any other part of your body. Winter hats come in many guises and will be made from warmer fabrics than summer hats, think wool, felt, fur and fleece. For those of you who instantly think “hats don’t suit me” luckily for you, I will also give you a bit of guidance on which hats are best suited to your needs and style. Here are my top styles that will keep you warm and stylish.

BOBBLE HAT Always a popular hat choice for kids, now adults are getting in on the act too! A bobble hat is usually a knitted beanie hat with a ‘ball’ on top. My personal favourite have a fur pom pom on the top, I think I have one in black, grey and camel! A bobble hat suits most face shapes and can work well for a more casual occasion teamed with a knitted type scarf and gloves.

£19.99 | superdry.com

FEDORA A fedora is a more structured winter hat with a brim which is most commonly made from wool and felt. The traditional fedora hat has a crease down the centre and is pinched at the front of the crown. This is probably my favourite style of winter hat as it is a little bit dressier than a beanie or bobble hat, in fact it can be really stylish when teamed with a sophisticated winter coat. My recent purchases have come from Reiss, I’d go for neutral colours like taupe or navy.

£49.99 | jigsaw.com

FUR HAT Fur hats are often associated with glamour and are popular with those looking for a more formal winter hat. Fur hats are not for the shy and retiring but are well suited to those with a rounder face shape. They are great for outdoor events in winter such as the races or a winter wedding.

FUR HEADBAND Although technically not a hat, a fur headband is a popular choice for winter and can be easier to wear than a full fur hat. Fur headbands are well suited to those with a structured or round faces. My fur head band is in a honey colour from Helen Moore, I love them! Perfect for when you want to add a bit of practical glamour. If a hat still isn’t your thing then how about a thick woolly scarf? This is a must-have for winter which can be added to your jacket, jumper or coat for extra warmth when the winds are particularly strong and cold. They can brighten up your dark winter wardrobe with ease as here are so many styles and colours to choose from. Scarves are very versatile and you can tie them or toss them over your shoulders different ways. The easiest way to wear a scarf is to wrap it around your neck or drape it casually around your shoulders. It will provide you warmth and style, especially when you match it with winter hats and gloves.

EACH SEASON BRINGS NEW HAIR AND FASHION TRENDS, SO WE THOUGHT IT WAS THE PERFECT TIME TAKE A TRIP DOWN MEMORY LANE AND LOOK AT HOW ICONIC HAIRSTYLES FROM DECADES GONE BY, STILL HAVE A PLACE IN THE SALON TODAY – LIAM ROBINSON, SENIOR DIRECTOR AT INDY HAIR EXPLAINS ALL

DECADES OF Style

L

et’s kick off with the queen of pop Madonna who, with her constantly evolving style and reinventions continues to turn heads even today. One particular style set for a revival in the coming seasons is the wild 80s and I’m talking curly texture with masses of lift! Just recently we saw Topshop Unique’s SS17 show, where the models rocked spiral curls with tons of lift, just screaming 80s texture. As we move into the 90s, one haircut that says I'll be there for you (sorry couldn't help myself), is the 'Rachel'. The fact a haircut can be identified by a character from a sitcom just shows the influence this had on us all! This trend of face framing layers certainly hasn't escaped us, it's just grown up and softened with age. Lots of clients still want layers to complement their face shape and they’re perfect for drawing attention exactly where we want it. Credit to Jennifer Anniston's hairstylist for that period, as her style developed so did our clients’ and she continued to look effortlessly glamorous always ahead of the trend when it came to beautiful hair. We could probably write a whole article about the countless trends Jennifer has pioneered, but let's move on to another lady who had a haircut so iconic that it had its own name...

The POB! Oh yes no look back at trends over the decades could go by without mentioning Mrs B. Never have I seen (in my time on the salon floor) a hair trend generate quite so much interest as the day Posh decided to throw away the extensions and have her mane lobbed off, with it creating the birth of the POB (posh bob). The way Victoria evolved her style through this stage really captured people's imaginations and encouraged many to be far more daring with their style. I think the key here is the evolution of the trends...not just the 'POB' but also the 'Rachel'. The fact even after Jen and Victoria moved on to different looks, each of the trends they forged continued to develop into the styles we see our clients wearing today. They could both be seen as "poster girls" of an evolution in their individual trends. Their timing perfectly coincided with what the public needed at that time for inspiration and that’s what makes them both the style icons they continue to be today. It excites me to think about which trends in hair will actually stand the test of time and last for decades to come – just what will turn out to be the new "mullet" or "tiger stripe highlights”?

TRUE COLO | FASHION & BEAUTY

HABITUALLY THE ‘GO-TO’ FASHION ITEM FOR MANY OF US, THE LEGACY OF THE LBD HAS UNDISPUTEDLY STOOD THE TEST OF TIME, TRANSCENDING AGE, SIZE AND OCCASION – BUT WHEN IT COMES TO OOZING GLAMOUR & SOPHISTICATION THERE ARE PLENTY OF CHIC ALTERNATIVES THAT WILL HELP YOU STAND OUT FROM THE CROWD SAYS EXPERT COLOUR ANALYST, VICTORIA SCRANAGE

The New

BLACK W

hy are we so fixated with the LBD? Little...not many of us feel comfortable wearing a revealing outfit; Black… not always a colour that suits the majority of people; Dress… not everyone’s thing. Why do we feel the need to flash the flesh at the Christmas Party when it’s not necessarily our style? Whether it’s a low cut top or a short hem, if you don’t feel confident, you won’t look confident. Black is one of the hardest colours of all to wear, yet when women want to look their best they typically opt for it. With 70% of the clothes sold in the UK being black, it’s certainly hard to avoid, however there are so many beautiful coloured clothes out there. Just because we’re women, it doesn’t mean that we have to wear a dress - particularly

if we don’t enjoy wearing one. I can’t remember the last time I saw Victoria Beckham in anything other than trousers, but she always looks particularly feminine. So let’s talk about my speciality... colour! Why not try something different, stand out from the LBD crowd. During the festive period, try a Christmas colour like red or green. If you’re feeling really brave there are always the classic metallic colours. Oh.....but wait, before you get too excited, you first need to determine whether you have ‘warm’ or ‘cool’ colouring. If you have any red (natural or not) in your hair, you are likely to have ‘warm’ colouring and if not then you probably have ‘cool’ colouring - but this isn’t an exact science. Compare fuchsia and salmon pinks, next to your face, to see which colour makes your eyes brighten and your skin glow. If the fuchsia suits you best you have ‘cool’ colouring, but if it’s the salmon you will look best in ‘warm’ colours. If you have ‘warm’ colouring, stick to poppy red, teal green, copper or gold. If you have ‘cool’ colouring, the best shades to wear would be postbox red, emerald green or silver. You don’t need to be head to toe in one of these colours, but look for outfits that primarily contain them, in a style and shape that suits you. If you have

OLOURS strong dominant features such as a piercing eye colour, then mix contrasting colours; you don’t want to look like a Christmas tree, but how about a statement red or green skirt with navy accessories, or a gold jumpsuit with a black handbag, shoes and jewellery. If you have softer features, then blend similar colours to coordinate your perfect outfit. Mix grey and silver tones, in a dress, with gun metal grey accessories, or a mint green trouser suit with a teal cami top. Don’t be scared to experiment with colour. Some women use black as a crutch believing it makes them look slimmer, when actually a correctly sized outfit in a flattering colour will look far better than a LBD if it’s not your style. Patterns can be great to hide areas of concern, although they can also draw attention so be careful that you use them to your advantage. If you are worried about moving away from the ‘comfort blanket’ of black, or simply can’t find any other colours in a suitable outfit, then bring an alternative colour to the fore with accessories. You can have real fun by coordinating your necklace, handbag, shoes and nail polish colour. Wearing a chunky necklace in a colour that makes your eyes sparkle, and illuminates your skin, will make all the difference. The reason black can look so detrimental is the impact it has on your skin tone and eyes. If it is not your colour, it will have a yellowing effect on your skin, exaggerate darkness under your eyes and highlight any blemishes and wrinkles. Find ‘your’ colours and use them as a base, or accent, for any outfit you wear. Tying it in with matching accessories will build and cement your look, making it individual to you whilst allowing your personality to shine through. Dressing to express, rather than dressing to impress!

Fabulous O

FLOORS

ften the busiest room in the house and bursting with activity, the kitchen is the beating centre of your home and as such, deserves flooring that can cope with the hustle and bustle of daily life. It has a tough job - taking muddy footprints and spilt milk in its stride whilst maintaining a fresh and stylish look, which makes choosing the right material for your space and lifestyle crucial. With a dizzying array of options out there, we asked Sophie McKay - Assistant Manager at Floors of Stone (sister company of deVOL kitchens) for her expert advice when it comes to choosing the perfect finish. Flooring. We walk on it and see it every day. It can often make or break a room, but so often it is an afterthought on a project. The excitement of choosing the colour and style of kitchen cabinets; finding quirky light fittings; mulling over cup handles or knobs, brass or nickel; sourcing the perfect worktop, it all seems to take priority. What is generally the largest area of the room often gets pushed to one side. Solid and dependable, we take the floor for granted: expect it to be there, forgetting that it can act as the perfect neutral background to those bold kitchen colours or pull together all those different tones and shades. It also needs to be resilient enough to stand up to hectic day-to-day life. Maybe the fact that there are so many options on the market is to blame. Natural stone, wood, porcelain, vinyl, the list goes on.

Here at Floors of Stone we may be biased, but in our eyes nothing can beat, or even match, the beauty of natural stone. Every tile is slightly different, with unique fossils, subtle colour variation, and beautiful texture. Something like traditional slate is a bold, dark statement, bringing a sense of drama to a space. The subtle, neutral tones of limestone or sandstone really allow the furniture to take centre stage, and sit quietly in the background, occasionally winking at you as a glint of sunlight catches a fossil or mineral. Nothing beats the rustic, tactile nature of an unfilled travertine, perfect for those homes that want to look loved and lived in. Natural stone isn’t for everyone. You may not be comfortable with colour variation, or want a very contemporary look. The amazing array of porcelain tiles available are a great alternative and are ideal for a busy kitchen. Plain tiles bring a sense of order and continuity, whereas stone-effect tiles can recreate the look of natural stone, but without the risk of getting variation you’re not keen on. There’s also an impressive range of on-trend concrete-look tiles or wood-effect tiles, which are a lot more practical than real wood in a kitchen. Planning your flooring from the beginning also gives you more

options. Extending the back of the house and uniting the inside and outside to create an infinity look is so popular. Using the same tiles through from the kitchen to the patio can help enhance this feeling of space and marry the two areas. Tiles can also be followed through to the hallway, dining room, utility bringing a sense of harmony to the home. Finally, the icing on the cake, a beautiful splashback that will stand the test of time. We can think of nothing more special than a completely bespoke splashback created from handmade tiles. Our tiles are designed and created in our on-site ceramics studio at Cotes Mill. The perfect addition to a kitchen and how wonderful to have a completely unique splashback created just for you! Do your TILES have the WOW FACTOR?

I

f you’re in the early stages of planning a new project, the tiles may be the last thing on your mind. They should be the fi rst; here’s why:

Tiles have the power to make, or indeed break a room. How many times have you stepped into a beautifully redecorated home and marvelled at the quality of the fi nish, only to be disappointed by a less-than-wow tile job in the bathroom? The right tiles have the capability to completely transform a space. Sumptuous polished porcelain marble-effect tiles really ramp up the luxury, while rustic limestone-effect tiles give that cosy, farmhouse feel and all without the regular sealing and care often required by their authentic counterparts. To fi nd out what a difference the right tiles could make to your project, take a trip to emc:tiles. Working closely with leading tile manufacturers from right across Europe enables emc:tiles to offer their customers the very latest in tile design, choice and fi nish. ITALIAN Chic

If the idea of a luxury and traditional Italian look in your home is something you love the sound of, Appassionata’s interior designer and co-owner Dawn Cavanagh Hobbs has six top tips on how to create a beautiful & unique look to your home, inspired by local artisans of Le Marche

◆ Lighting is a crucial feature to any space. Antique glass chandeliers, wall lighting and elegant lamps with gold-lined shades will give your space a wonderful and warm glow. ◆ Old furniture can be restored to its full potential by painting them for a fresh, new look with the addition of some gold leaf for a touch of class.

◆ Natural textures will really bring together a space and provide beautiful detailing. A large wooden table featuring wrought iron legs combined with a copper sink and a ceramic-splash back will look amazing in any kitchen.

◆ No room needs to be boring. Make use of the smallest spaces in your house and make them interesting by highlighting one wall with a bold colour, or by adding fl owers or even a wall painting. ◆ If you’re looking for ways to maximise space, create the illusion of additional room by painting the ceilings and walls the same colour to open and lift the room. ◆ Using natural paint allows the walls to breathe and gives a lovely chalky, matte fi nish. There is a great selection of colours to choose from which all blend together beautifully. www.appassionata.com

Ceramics by deVOL Beautiful sinks, crockery and tiles all handmade right here at Cotes Mill The opening of our own ceramics studio just about a year ago was the start of something new for deVOL. The renovated barn with a pantile roof and big barn doors has become home to Ed the sink maker, Claire the pot thrower and Hannah the tile expert. We are so excited to be able to offer our customers these handcrafted, unique and quite beautiful items for the home. Claire is our potter and she fills her days throwing an ever-growing range of pots, mugs bowls and plates. She is a true expert with colour too, and is able to mix and create beautiful glazes that make us so happy. Ed has been hard at work perfecting all of the traditional techniques required to hand-build our very own ceramic sinks. These handsome sinks are finished with a crackle glaze that makes them really quite different to anything else on the market. They are available to view and buy here at Cotes Mill and they can be purchased as part of a kitchen or on their own. Having an original handmade deVOL sink will be such a lovely finishing touch to your room, each one is slightly different and we hope you will

come and choose your favourite from a growing selection. The rarity of finding a handmade sink has made this new line by deVOL the talk of the town; all of the top national magazines are keen to feature this new deVOL product. Along with beautiful bowls and stunning sinks, we have a delightful new collection of ceramic tiles handmade by Hannah. They have been designed, hand rolled, cut, printed and glazed by hand to create a truly unique and beautiful collection. These tiles are all available through our sister company Floors of Stone and they can also be viewed here at the Mill. We believe it’s good for the soul to buy something that will last, age and is not throwaway or mass-produced, so we really hope you will come and visit us to look at these lovely new products. The Cotes Mill showrooms are open Monday to Friday from 8.30am – 5pm and Saturdays from 10am – 5pm. (For design appointments we generally recommend booking in advance).

THIS IS ISSUE A TEMPLATE HORTICULTURAL AND THISEXPERT, IS WHERE FRANCES THE STANDFIRST HUNT OFWILL GOSCOTE BE. NURSERIES EXPLAINS US HOW TO LIVEN UP OUR GARDENS AND OUR HOMES WITH SOME BEAUTIFULLY FESTIVE FLORALS

FeFsLtOivRe A L S

I

n the lead up to Christmas, the last thing on our minds is the garden. Especially as inevitably the dark mornings and even darker evenings give us a very short window of time in the day to actually see it! One tip I always give to people who feel that their garden lacks interest through the winter is to visit your local nursery during this time. There will of course be something ‘doing it’s thing’, whether that be foliage interest, flowering or just a fantastic branch structure. There are a few plants that can ‘shine’ in this bleak time, that may catch our eye and make us venture out into the garden to have a closer look. Including a few key winter interest shrubs dotted through the garden is usually all it takes to create a winter composition from our kitchen window.

CHRISTMAS ROSE, HELLEBORUS ORIENTALIS Not a rose at all, but certainly as sweet, the Christmas Rose comes in a huge variety of colours and forms. With the added bonus of evergreen foliage (which, incidentally, lots of people remove entirely at around this time of year to better expose the flowers), look out especially for the speckled flower form that are rather lovely. You can even get double flowering varieties, my favourite is the double flowered deep burgundy colour that is rather festive.

WINTER JASMINE, JASMINUM NUDIFLORUM The evergreen winter jasmine is a rather jolly little climber that can really cheer up a dark corner. With star shaped bright yellow flowers, against glossy deep emerald green foliage, this climber is great teamed with a spring/summer flowering Clematis to add interest throughout the whole season.

RHODODENDRON ‘CHRISTMAS CHEER’ One of the very earliest flowering Rhododendron, this lovely evergreen provides a glorious display of fantastic pale pink flowers during the festive season. A lovely addition to a shady border, this really does create a wow in any garden.

CHRISTMAS BOX, SARCOCCOCA HOOKERIANA ‘PURPLE STEMS’ Last, but most definitely not least, this gorgeous evergreen has tiny star shaped, white flowers, that might be dainty to look at, but certainly pack a punch with the scent. There is a glorious specimen of Christmas Box in the car park at the nursery, and it

literally knocks me out with scent every time I pass it! Plant next to the patio doors, the front door, the compost bin; anywhere that you still venture out to the in the depths of winter. You will certainly not be disappointed. There are also some indoor plants that can really cheer up the dining table over the Christmas period. These take very little care, but do be warned, they are short lived and you may need to juggle the plant between cold and warm areas to get them at their best for the big day itself!

POINSETTIA The classic Christmas plant, with knock-out red bracts that last throughout the winter period. You can even find hot pink Poinsettias if you prefer something less traditional! The key to keeping your Poinsettia looking its best is keeping it in a bright spot, but out of direct sunlight, and do try to avoid leaving waterlogged.

PAPER WHITE NARCISSUS These gorgeous Daffodils are, alas, not hardy in the garden, but do produce a wonderful, highly scented display for the Christmas period. Pure white flowers, with multiple flowers per stem, these are truly gorgeous. Plant 6 weeks before you would like them to flower. Top tip: plant in a tall clear vase so that the stems are supported as they do have a tendency to flop!

AMARYLLIS Another classic Christmas flower for the house, Amaryllis certainly create a show. Usually a bright, punchy red, but also gorgeous in white. These bulbs aren’t cheap- they usually cost around £10, but they can be nurtured over the summer outdoors so that they flower again the following winter. Again, they do have a tendency to flop so you may need to get creative with your supports. Raffia may come in handy! You may have noticed that the road to Goscote Nurseries from Syston (next to Charnwood Edge Business Park) is closed, and will unfortunately remain so until the beginning of February whilst a bridge is rebuilt. Goscote Nurseries is open as usual, and there is an alternative route, either via the A46 and A6 into Rothley, or along Humble Lane into Cossington.

This fantastic glass backed four bedroom property, is presented over two floors, within a truly wonderful lakeside setting on the beautiful new Water Gardens. Thoroughly contemporary in its exterior and interior styling, two of the double bedrooms benefit from direct access onto a private balcony area, with picturesque views over the lagoon, making this is a genuinely breath-taking property. La Dolce Vita Full of ancient architecture, stunning coastlines & some of Italy’s finest local cuisine, the eastern province of Le Marche provides a taste of authentic Italy. Close to the Adriatic Sea & the Sibillini Mountains, Le Marche is one of Italy’s best kept secrets, & is growing a reputation as one of the best places to retire with its stunning rural landscape, it’s not hard to see why

I

t’s this picture perfect, simpler pace of life that made Rutland-based entrepreneur Michael Hobbs and his wife, Dawn Cavanagh Hobbs - an established interior designer - fall in love with the region that is surrounded by picturesque countryside and cobbled streets. On moving to Petritoli – a commune in the province of Fermo – the Leicestershire couple explains; “We were on holiday in Italy and after driving through the region’s rolling hills in the late afternoon sunshine, we discovered Le Marche by chance and quite simply fell in love with what we saw. So much so, that we bought our own home out there in 2007 and realised that we wanted to share this beautiful and untouched part of the world.”

In 2007, Michael and Dawn combined business and pleasure, utilising Michael's business acumen and Dawn's love and understanding of design and renovation, and they founded Appassionata - a bespoke luxury property business. The pair wanted to create something that not only reflected their own Italian discovery, but also incorporate their strong family values. A business that is boutique in nature, the family run company is aimed at like-minded people who want to experience real Italy – whilst enjoying the finer things in life. With a small collection of handpicked luxury properties in the Appassionata portfolio, the company lovingly renovates and restores its houses to then offer for sale via a Fractional Ownership model, which sees owners pay a one-off cost for an exclusive one tenth, five week share of the property. A model that keeps family and life experiences at the heart of owning a second home abroad, Fractional Ownership gives

thebeaconmagazine.co.uk

95010_Appassionata_ADVERTORIAL.indd 61

real ownership without the hassle of legal fees, purchase costs and ongoing maintenance. Now bringing to market it's latest restoration project, Il Riposo - the team’s fourth development - is a stunning historic property which dates back to the 12th century. Boasting four spacious bedrooms and three bathrooms over three floors, the 210 mq (2260sq ft) retreat welcomes with a beautiful large entrance hall leading into a spacious, open plan dining room and kitchen with a balcony and steps into the terraced garden. A private pool awaits on the lower terrace, whilst the upper terrace offers breathtaking views overlooking the garden and pool to the open countryside beyond. Located in the Ascoli Piceno province of Le Marche, Il Riposo is situated in a beautiful medieval hamlet, and is an idealistic setting for those that wish to explore nearby blue flag beaches or the many ancient churches, abbeys and monasteries surrounding. Visitors can take part in one of the regions many wine or olive oil tours or even head to the mountains for the ski season! Many of us only have around forty days a year to enjoy holidays, whilst some are lucky enough to be searching for a relaxing retirement abroad. Either way, the model offered by Appassionata offers a real slice of the Italian life and a savvy alternative to buying outright. There are only ten shares available in Appassionata’s unique Il Riposo property, and prices start from £90,000 for a five-week, one-tenth fractional share. Visit www.appassionata.com for more information about Appassionata and its properties.

It’s the most wonderful time of year, the smell of mulled wine, cinnamon sprinkled coffee and boozy mince pies. The holiday season equals lots of good times, but with those celebrations often comes a whole lot of stress. Anisha Mistry’s holiday season survival guide is full of genius, time saving ideas on how to prepare, instantly classic recipes without getting up at 5am and general self-preservation tricks that will have you, not just making the best of the holidays, but having the best Christmas ever

e all love the idea of hosting brunches, lunches and dinners, but soon after begin to regret it the moment your friends and family think back on those hilarious blunders while you toil over a pan of hot soup. Join the club, we have all been there. I often host brunch and when I do, I plan my entire menu around the fact that I don’t but choose not to spend the entire morning in the kitchen. It is important to skip the time consuming dishes and spend time with your guests. Meal planning is such a great tool to help you shop, cook and even eat smarter with the added bonus of spending less on the groceries. But even at the best of times, we can all struggle to manage ourselves and keeping it organised and adding the holiday season to the mix,

95010_Anisha-FestiveFood.indd 62

makes meal planning a whole lot harder. Between decorating the tree, shopping for presents and going to dinner parties doesn't mean you have to fall to the side-line just because your schedule is packed. Sticking to these tips will keep things easy and convenient. Prepping your house for holiday entertaining is intuitive yet fun, remember to clean your bathrooms, stock up on the wines and remember to prepare the guest rooms but importantly your kitchen needs just as much—if not more—attention. Getting your kitchen into fighting shape is all about being organised and doing as much as possible in advance. Creating a list and crossing items off as you buy them keeps you in check ensuring that you have everything you need.

SO LET’S DO THIS! •

• •

TOP TIPS • • • • • • •

Start a calendar. Make a shopping list and allocate days for shopping, i.e. market days, butchers etc. Look out for food deals, this will save you time, money and energy spent on thinking of what to cook. Plan for leftovers. Prepare the food as soon as you get back from shopping including components, which can be refrigerated or frozen. Plan your freezer space appropriately which doesn’t mean over stuff the fridge! Keep a well-stocked pantry.

Order your meat from the butcher as soon as possible as opposed to shrink-wrapped cuts from a supermarket. They are not only often of a better quality, but they also have the added benefit of being prepared to your specifications. Most butchers will source speciality cuts like veal shanks or a rib eye roast, which are more difficult to find but they will be happy to do this for you. Keeping in contact with your butcher will also make sure you get the right size for your preparation needs. Don’t leave this important task until the last minute, as some cuts of meat can take longer to source. Visit the market for root vegetables a week before—they’ll keep. You can never have enough potatoes (including sweet), carrots, parsnips, celeriac, sweet and other assorted vegetables so you’ll need to stock up. You should try and get your onions, garlic, whatever you can from the farmers’ market or local greengrocers because honestly the flavour difference is definitely noticeable. Not to mention, you’re supporting local businesses, and you’ll guarantee to have a greater variety of produce among the vendors’ than you will anywhere else. Remember to double check your staples in the pantry as they may need restocking. Spices, especially, can lose their flavour and scent entirely. If you go shopping for replacement spices, go with quality over quantity mentality in mind as you will get what you pay for. There's nothing like having every ingredient you need on hand, just waiting to be turned into a delicious meal. Enter the pantry meal. Dishes like pasta with oil-packed tuna and passata can be surprisingly satisfying. If you have leftover roasted veggies, even better. Why not try using a food shopping delivery service to avoid carrying back-breaking heavy items, like flour and nuts, milk when they can “magically” appear on your doorstep...after all it is Christmas! Marinating and freezing can be your time saving friend! Quickcooking meats like chicken, pork, steak can be marinated ahead of time so all you need to do is defrost and cook. Serve with your favourite veggies and a quick cooking side dish like couscous, rice or quinoa, just don’t forget to label. Boxing day leftovers are great, choose a simple, crowd-pleasing dish, like this savoury cheesy bread or a turkey fried rice with spices. One pot wonders are perfect for this time of day. Add extra essential ingredients to your shopping list. If you want to do cake, you’re going to need eggs and cream! Stock your fridge with a few of your favourite yet handy ingredients that pair well together. Feel free to get creative – just make sure that before you buy any ingredients, you have 3 ideas for using them together. Take for example chicken breasts, capers, olives, roasted red peppers, feta and quinoa. Idea one; toss everything with quinoa, Idea two: make a feta stuffed chicken and serve with a mixed salad of capes, olives, red pepper and quinoa, just try not to waste! Use the weekends before Christmas to prepare a few different dishes from seasonal meats and vegetables then mix and match them for meals when entertaining guests during the week. It’s remarkable how creative you can be. This list of tips has you covered. There are plenty of simple and time saving ideas for getting you more organised and to be inspired to think of delicious dishes you want to cook. @ANISHARMISTRY

BANKING TO

Banqu e ting

T

he daily transactions of loans, mortgages & current accounts have been replaced by the sounds & smells of one of Britain’s fastest-growing steakhouses, when last month saw the amazing transformation of one of Leicester’s most historic banking halls into a 200-seat restaurant.

Middletons Steakhouse & Grill first opened their doors in Middleton, Norfolk in July 2011 and now five years on have added Leicester as their sixth location in the UK. They are delighted to be breathing new life into this grand Grade II listed structure after it has laid empty for more than a decade, offering the good people of Leicester the opportunity to enjoy some deliciously prepared cuisine. We went along to sample the menu and check out the fabulous refurbishment, which includes panelling made from incredibly rare Brazilian mahogany and is the result of the painstaking restoration work undertaken here. “As the work progressed we were increasingly aware of what a magnificent building this was. The huge former banking hall, based on ancient Roman architecture, is an amazing space and we couldn’t wait to throw open our doors and welcome the people of Leicester to our most ambitious project to date.” Steve Hutton, Managing Director. The Middletons menu, that has proved so popular elsewhere in the country, includes a range of prime steaks, a signature mixed grill, fresh fish and seafood as well as vegetarian options, along with freshly-made classic desserts. Their lunch menu is perfect for a working lunch or a break from shopping and at just £10.95 for three courses, is an absolute must. There is also an extensive wine and cocktail list packed with many of the classics – although we highly recommend the ‘Dark & Stormy!’ – a delicious blend of dark rum, ginger beer and lime juice. There is a vibrant yet relaxed atmosphere aided by the great service and fantastic quality food (garlic mushrooms, I’m looking at you!!) The service style is fun and energetic, and the stylish surroundings definitely make Middletons the perfect place for all occasions. Book your table today and indulge in comfort. “Our birds are grown much slower than most,” says Jacob. “Our dry-plucked, freerange bronze turkeys are slow-grown to full maturity and reared in accordance with Traditional Farm-Fresh Turkey Association guidelines, which means they come with the Golden Turkey Quality Assurance guarantee. Our turkeys are grown free-range until 6 months – at least twice as long as the freerange turkeys sold at supermarkets for Christmas. They’re also dry-hung like game, for 10 days which produces a rich flavour.

A FREE RANGE TURKEY

(APPROX. 5-6KG TO FEED 8, RRP £74) Fosse Meadows' turkeys are slowreared on grassy pastures until maturity at 6 months! We keep them in a small flock to promote natural behaviour and feed them an additive-free natural cereal diet. These high welfare birds are prepared on the farm to reduce stress, where they are dry-plucked, handfinished and game-hung for 10 days, and come with giblets. Our festive birds are fitter and have larger, stronger legs because they free-range in pastures for much longer than most. This is the key difference with Fosse Meadows, free-ranging our birds for longer means they take on more texture and taste with an incredible flavour. They are raised on a natural cereal diet that is free from additives. Fosse Meadows turkey, cockerel and chickens are all from traditional strains, they free-range in pastures for much longer, producing generously proportioned birds with meat of outstanding taste.

Producer by Good Housekeeping magazine. See for yourself! On Sunday 20th November from 10am-1pm Fosse Meadows will be throwing open the farm gate to invite you to a festive farm visit. Visitors can see their birds and learn about slow-grown and freerange farming, taste some of their fabulous turkey, and pre-order your turkey, cockerel or goose in time for the most important meal of the year. You won’t find Fosse Meadows turkeys in the supermarket; they are only available to order via the farm direct, online shop, or at selected farm shops and quality butchers. These high-quality, high-welfare turkeys are presented boxed, wrapped in paper with a Golden Turkey recipe leaflet that offers inspiring ideas for leftover roast turkey, by TV chef Rachel Green. The chicken, cockerels and geese are all produced to the same traditional slow grown and free-range standards as the seasonal turkeys. As Nick says, ‘happy birds are tasty birds.’ Fosse Meadows produce award-winning birds! In 2011, The Independent newspaper published an article saying their birds were the tastiest reared in Britain and last year Fosse Meadows was named Best Small Meat

Easy to scale up to serve more, these meatballs could be made with chicken or pork mince, but turkey is a good lean meat and is often available from Riverford over the winter months. Its leanness makes it prone to drying out, so adding milk-soaked breadcrumbs keeps the meatballs moist, as does poaching them in the stock. The onion, carrot and celery add an extra flavour, but a good stock is really essential here – we of course recommend the chicken stock we sell, if you don’t make your own.

ingredients • • • • • • • •

50g white bread, crumbed 1 tbsp milk 250g minced turkey 1 large egg yolk 1 tbsp finely chopped sage 1 tbsp finely chopped parsley sunflower or light olive oil 1 large onion, finely diced

• 1 large carrot, peeled & diced • 1 celery stick, finely diced • 300g shredded green cabbage • 1 litre chicken stock • salt & black pepper • small handful of finely grated Parmesan, to serve

method

©Riverford

In a large bowl, stir the breadcrumbs into the milk. Add the turkey, egg yolk, sage and parsley. Season with salt and pepper and use your hands to mix and squidge it together well. Roll into walnut-sized balls. Heat a thin layer of oil in a large, deep frying pan and fry the meatballs to lightly brown them all over (cook in batches if they don’t all fit). Transfer to a plate. Add the onion, carrot and celery to the same pan and cook for 15–20 minutes on a low heat, until tender but not coloured, stirring now and then. If the veg looks like catching at any point, add a splash of water. Add the meatballs, cabbage and stock. Simmer for 5–6 minutes, until the meatballs are cooked through (cut one open if you’re not sure) and the cabbage wilted. Check the seasoning and serve sprinkled with the Parmesan.

There's nothing better than home cooking made from fresh organic ingredients.

Italia Pinot Grigio, Italian, White Wine RRP £7.49 is delicately fragrant and mildly floral with a slight lemon-citrusy flavour. It has a hint of thyme with a tangy, light finish with a good acid "bite" which is typical of Italian wines making this a perfect match with herby meatballs. Domaine Paul Blanck Gewurztraminer RRP £14.99 is a very aromatic wine. It is ideal for sipping when accompanying food like turkey, pork and grilled sausages. This wine is full of fruity flavours with aromas of rose petals, peaches and spice. Oyster Bay, Chardonnay, New Zealand, White Wine RRP £10.50 is a very popular white wine and a good choice for fish and white meat. It is a voluptuous wine and is a wider-bodied, velvety white with rich citrusy notes like lemon and grapefruit, which complements the meatballs adding a buttery, creamy finish.

Toward the tail, that shoulder gently falls and the boot lids carry their distinctive lighting either side of the simple Volvo lettering. If we were to describe this new Volvo in just one word, it would be handsome. The clean design extends to the interior and the simple shapes with careful use of open-grain walnut, attractive leather and clear main screen provide a tactile and restful environment. The multi-function display does take some getting used to but ensures buttons and switches don’t clutter the facia. The cabin is positively cavernous, and both body shapes have considerable boots: ideal for bringing home furniture (flat packed or otherwise). Currently there are two trim levels, the entry Momentum and luxury

Inscription, with sportier R-Design due shortly. Both are delivered with an exceptional list of equipment as standard and as one would expect from any Volvo, much concerns safety. All are fitted with Pilot Assist, a semi-autonomous drive technology which takes care of steering, throttle and brakes. It doesn’t require a vehicle in front to follow but does demand an element of steering input (and alarms if it considers the driver is not engaging with the car) but is ideal for relaxed motorway work. A world first is run-off road mitigation, which applies corrective steering should it consider you are about to leave the road. And in addition to identifying people and vehicles, City Safety now encompasses large animal detection (“everything from a small deer upwards”). The S90 and V90 are presently offered with two versions of Volvo’s clever Drive-E diesel engine with a plug-in hybrid due next year. Both D4 and D5 diesels provide ample shove via the smooth eight-speed automatic gearbox. Despite the car’s dimensions - it is wider than a Bentley Flying Spur and almost as long – it is an easy drive. In standard form it is well-mannered but the optional air suspension adds notable refinement when road surfaces are poor. Volvo has evolved: the step change for the brand is that safety is now considered implicit. And the focus on clean Swedish design and fine build quality puts the S90 and V90 into a very desirable space indeed. The S90 saloon starts at £32,555.

THE 2016 SPORTING CALENDAR HAS BEEN JAM PACKED WITH ASTONISHING ACHIEVEMENTS BY OUR HOME-GROWN SPORTSMEN AND WOMEN. SPORTS WRITER, PHIL HOLLOWAY TAKES A LOOK BACK AT THE LAST 12 MONTHS OF SPORTING GREATNESS, AND PICKS OUT JUST SOME OF THE HIGHLIGHTS

Dreams

CAN COME TRUE

W

hat a year 2016 has been. The world has gone a little bit crazy. The UK is leaving Europe, America is going through serious political change, there are nuclear tests in Korea and Leicester City won the Premier League. You see, I told you, it has been a funny old year. Sport can often give most of us a chance to escape our work life, the sometimes frightening news headlines, and allow us to focus on our sporting heroes for 90 minutes and see the good side of human nature. Our local lads in blue have given the world a new dream. Leicester City have encapsulated all that is good in sport. They have shown how the under-dog can have its day and inspire a new generation of sports stars in the future.

Indifferent seasons for our rugby and cricket teams locally, who have been over shadowed for once by the footballers, Euro 2016 never happened, (unless you are Welsh!) and defeat in this year’s Ryder Cup - we can swiftly move on from. Instead we can look back to a British Wimbledon champion in the shape of Andy Murray and finally after 30 years, Johanna Konta became the first female British tennis player to reach the top 10 WTA rankings plus the fact ESPN awarded Leicester the title "Sporting Capital of the World 2016". The BBC Sports Personality of the year 2016, taking place in Birmingham this

December, is set to be one of the most fiercely contested yet and could potentially see Leicester City as Team of the year and maybe even Melton based Jamie Vardy as the Personality of the year. But if you ask me the real hero of sport can be found out in the cold and muddy fields of Leicestershire every Saturday and Sunday. I am talking about those who coach our local youngsters, organise fixtures, wash the kit, run the line and yes even those who referee! Let's not forget every parent, who perhaps like me, spends most of the weekend driving around our beautiful county, finding some sports ground here and there for their kids. So, turn off the news, and let's look forward to a great sporting 2017, the impossible dream has happened THIS year‌ Who knows what could happen next!?

Photography: [LEFT to RIGHT] Getty Images, MICHAEL REGAN/Shutterstock

Perhaps the highlight of the year has

been the Paralympics. This event is fast becoming a more talked about sporting event than the actual Olympics, and some of the heroes including Lee Pearson and Dame Sarah Storey offer us all inspiration.

EDUCATION |

THE BEST GCSE & A LEVEL RESULTS in Leicester and much more!

L

eicester High School for Girls is easily missed on the London Road in Leicester. Just along from Leicester Racecourse and tucked up a leafy drive, it sits modestly on the south side of the city, in its pretty, three acre grounds. It’s not a showy school. Don’t be deceived by appearances, however. For over 100 years the school has quietly and efficiently been educating girls to a very high standard.

Don’t be fooled into pigeonholing this quietly successful school where tradition and progression go hand in hand. Visit the school during its Open Evening on Thursday 1st December 5.30-7pm and prepare to be impressed!

Not content with always having the best GCSE and A level results in the city, the school excelled itself this year by achieving the best GCSE results since 2009. Nearly half the grades at GCSE were the top grade of A*. The GCSEs are all in academic subjects too. In addition, A level results were up on last year's and the majority of Year 13 succeeded in gaining a place at their first choice university. This latest improvement in exam results comes at the end of an academic year which delivered an all-round ‘Excellent’ Inspection Report; a significant improvement on the previous one. Headmaster, Alan Whelpdale, now only in his fourth year at the school, said, ‘Clearly, excellent teaching and achievement are my priority, but pastoral care is a key part of any school, and I know this is also a particular strength at Leicester High.’ Girls at Leicester High have varying experiences: Rugby Club, Boot Camp and Yoga; talks on terrorism and drug abuse, and good skincare workshops by Clinique.
