WELCOME

THEBEACONMAGAZINE.CO.UK

My love affair with sport started from a very early age; a keen gymnast from six, competing in regular athletics meets from nine and scoring goals as a netballer from fourteen. These days (and four knee ops later) I do tend to take things slightly easier, opting instead for low impact gym sessions and classes at my local leisure centre in Market Harborough – I have to say however, the passion, drive and competitive spirit is still positively as resolute as ever. It’s surprising in many ways really, that it’s taken until now to self-indulge in a Sports Special! What’s maybe less of a surprise though, as a local publication is electing to mark the occasion with a deservedly triumphant Captain Morgan on our front cover! We’ve definitely gone all out in homage to LCFC this edition with our dedicated feature on pages 46-51. Sports writer Phil Holloway reflects on the Foxes’ extraordinary victory and chats first hand to some of the fans about the reality of their beloved Leicester City being crowned Premier League Champions. Plus we’ve got a whole host of other sporting delights for you, from rugby to cycling and of course the summer brings Rio 2016, with the Olympics and Paralympics just around the corner. Summer days in the meantime, can be spent visiting one of the many attractions Leicestershire has to offer - so if you’re looking for ideas and inspiration to keep the kids entertained during the school holidays, then turn to pages 30-33, to check out our hot picks of venues and activities that are right on your door step.

EDITOR'S PICK

The children’s theme continues on pages 36-38, as 2016 celebrates the centenary of Roald Dahl, one of the greatest storytellers for children of the 20 th century. Our good friends at Wistow have made a remarkably fitting tribute to the best-selling author by designing their famous maze in the shape of the BFG (‘Big Friendly Giant’) this year, so be sure to add that to your list of ‘must-do’ days out this summer. Not that we’re wishing the summer away before it’s even started, but now is the perfect time to have one eye on your next winter excursion. Why not plan a trip to see the stunning Northern Lights with Hurtigruten (pages 84-87) to experience the mesmerising carnival of celestial lights that mystically convey a sense of being at the very edge of the world and offer a rare glimpse into the endless universe we are all just a tiny part of. Could that be a young Beacon editor in action on the uneven bars…? #gynmasticsthrowback

MAT GILBERT, VICE PRESIDENT OF THE ENGLAND DEAF RUGBY UNION AND PROFESSIONAL RUGBY PLAYER HAS SUFFERED FROM HEARING LOSS THROUGHOUT HIS LIFE. MAT WILL BE AT HEARCLEAR EXPO 2016 IN PETERBOROUGH ON THE 19TH JULY TO HELP SUPPORT THIS WONDERFUL EVENT

at has never let hearing loss affect his career and has battled through difficulties to become a professional rugby player, having played at the highest level throughout his career. In October 2012 Mat was nominated for the Deaf Sports Personality of the Year award.

Mat gradually lost his hearing from an early age and wasn’t diagnosed until 5 years old, but has never allowed his hearing loss to affect his career, or stop him doing anything in life. Being a professional sportsman, at times it can be difficult for him to hear instructions on the pitch but he has learnt to anticipate when certain moves are being played.

"I never let being deaf get in the way of my dream of playing professional rugby. I hope I can inspire people with a hearing loss to fulfil their goals and make the most of their potential."

“Occasionally I have not heard instructions from the referee and have given away penalties and been sin binned, this has led to me studying the rules and gaining an advanced understanding of when to expect the whistle to be blown, rather than having to hear it. On occasion when I have been penalised it has more often than not been due to my hearing loss” Mat has been a professional rugby player since 2010 playing for Llanelli Scarlets, Bath Rugby, Worcester Warriors and the Barbarians and is the UK's only profoundly deaf professional rugby union player. Mat wears Phonak Naida V UP hearing aids, which allow him to overcome his profound hearing loss.

A CLINICAL TRIAL WITH QUOTIENT CLINICAL IS REWARDING IN MORE WAYS THAN ONE – AND YOU’RE HELPING TO CHANGE LIVES FOR THE BETTER

EVER THOUGHT ABOUT CHANGING THE WORLD?

H

ave you ever thought about how the medicines you take get to you? It’s a long process that can take more than 12 years of testing to ensure that medicines are both effective and safe.

And it’s one that relies on healthy people taking part in trials. Did you know that trials of potentially life-saving medication sometimes have to be stopped because not enough healthy volunteers can be found to take part? Without the information from these trials the medicine can’t be approved. Quotient Clinical is a world-leading clinic, based in Nottingham conducting clinical trials of new medicines with the help of volunteers. Taking part in a clinical trial means you’re contributing to medicine in a way that can help people for generations to come – your children and grandchildren could benefit directly from you volunteering today. Chris is one of our regular volunteers. He’s happy to be giving back to society through volunteering - and getting paid for it. Here’s what he has to say about his last stay with us: “Having stayed with Quotient before I know what to expect and have some books, plenty of films on my laptop and a to-do list to strike through. I’ve just worked a week of over sixty hours so the

thebeaconmagazine.co.uk

93664_16-17_Quotinet.indd 13

change in pace will be welcome, and I’m looking forward to having a lot less to do. On my first night I get to meet some of the other volunteers and settle in. There are nine of us on this trial and this will be my home for 27 of the next 34 days. Having enough to do is important but being able to relax and chill out is a great side effect. After a good night’s sleep our first day is busy, so I opt to stay in bed and chill out while things get underway. Our group starts to bond as we get to know each other a bit and fall neatly in to the routine. It’s not long before things quieten down and the social interactions turn to banter. The staff are friendly and easy to get on with, and even the mixture of medical formality alongside social interaction seems to flow and makes the stay uncomplicated and even fun most of the time. My time at Quotient started in solitude as a single volunteer with time to spare and a laptop full of films and, after my time in the unit, culminated with a group of friends and more than a handful of shared memories.” If you want to be part of changing lives for the better, get in touch with Quotient to find out more. You could be pleasantly surprised at how easy and worthwhile you’ll find it! Contact nottingham@QuotientClinical.com or call 0330 303 5000

THIS ISSUE WE ASKED OUR RESIDENT HEALTH & FITNESS GURU JO HELCKÉ TO INVESTIGATE THE EFFECTS PHYSICAL ACTIVITY HAS ON YOUNGSTERS, AND DOES EXERCISE REALLY MAKE OUR CHILDREN HAPPY, HEALTHY, FIT…AND CLEVER?

P I A N H Gt S

have to admit that up until settling down to write this piece, I’ve only ever thought about exercise in terms of physical and mental well-being, and never from the perspective of academic performance. Having said that, the positive impact of fitness in terms of slowing down the mental aging process has most definitely been on my radar, probably because I am secretly hoping that the exercise I do will somehow mitigate my complete ineptitude when it comes to pastimes such as crosswords and sudoko. In fact there has been a good deal in the media this year about the positive benefits of exercise in terms of slowing down dementia. I listened keenly. It must be an age thing. But here I’ve been asked to explore the relationship between physical activity and academic performance amongst children. With three boys of my own - one in the midst of GCSE examinations and a complete refuse-nik when it comes to exercise, another who can succinctly be summed up on both the physical and cerebral fronts as “so laidback he’s horizontal”, and the youngest so keen on exercise that it is almost impossible to pin him down long enough to complete his homework - I have to confess that I am suddenly keenly interested. I have always encouraged them to take part in physical activity from a mens sana in corpore sano (a healthy mind in a healthy body) perspective – the message has been loud and clear for so long regarding the hugely positive influence of exercise on emotional health – but academic performance? That’s a new one for me.

FU

TURE

There have, of course, been studies showing that children who either walk or cycle to school are more focused in the classroom and I believe it – in fact, having heard a Radio 4 news item last year on this subject, I took the decision to ditch the car for the school run. Since the beginning of the current academic year we have all cycled to school most days - even in the depths of winter – and whilst I cannot report any improvements in academic performance, what I really can vouch for is my reduced stress levels at 8.15am from Monday to Friday: no more all out fights in the back of the car as I attempt to steer them safely to school. And I have little doubt that a 10 minute cycle ride to school in bracing weather conditions helps to shift my middle son’s morning disposition form “horizontal” to mildly elevated, just in time for the start of lessons. So you never know - that might boost his academic performance… On a less flippant note, current UK guidelines state that children should be engaged in 60 minutes of physical activity every day. Not surprisingly, very few children hit this target. As they go up the school, fewer and fewer PE and games sessions are timetabled, meaning that most of the time the onus is placed squarely on the shoulders of parents when it comes to the daily exercise target. That’s not easy when caught between work commitments, school hours, homework (think of all those tests and league tables), commuting, and the daily round of cooking and household chores. With the national obesity crisis, and an ever-growing proportion of children in the overweight category, encouraging girls and boys to get active is already high on the government agenda. And to add

thebeaconmagazine.co.uk

05/07/2016 13:36

to the growing pressure, it would seem that a number of evidencebased studies have found a correlation between physical activity amongst children and academic performance. It would appear that regular exercise actually alters brain function in children - for the better. One study suggested that every 15 minutes extra of daily exercise improved academic performance by a ¼ of a grade which leaves one to extrapolate that 60 minutes of daily physical activity could improve academic performance by a full grade – from B to A, for example. Wow, no pressure then mums and dads! I have to confess that my initial feeling when reading these snippets of research destined for popular consumption is a sense of mild anxiety welling up inside me: yet another thing to add to my already extensive daily “to do” list and to make me feel lacking when I haven’t managed to tick it off by the end of the day. I mean have you ever tried galvanising teenagers? I feel a distinct sense of achievement having merely levered them out of bed and shoehorned them into their chairs at the breakfast table! But then I console myself as follows: not all exercise is necessarily structured and formal. Being physically active comes in all shapes and sizes. My middle son tells me that every school lunchtime he plays football with his friends. Judging by the state of his school shoes, I believe him! My oldest genuinely doesn’t enjoy team sports yet he will happily take himself off for a country walk to clear his

head after a day of study. The short cycle ride to and from school cannot be discounted – it all adds up and the effects of exercise are known to be cumulative. As for my youngest - Mr Boundless Energy - I am not entirely convinced that the endless round of sporting activities is 100% conducive to academic achievement. He is by far the most active of my sons, always keen to try out any sport that comes his way and always intent on winning: going faster, higher, further than everyone else. Being the best. Yet I haven’t exactly noticed this drive and determination when it comes to his academic work. If I suggest it might be time to stop kicking a ball round the house and prepare for his spelling test so that he be top of the class, this doesn’t exactly seem to light his fire. Ideally, yes, we all need to, and should, encourage our children to take part in sport regularly – for health, emotional well-being and, it would seem, academic performance. Yet at the same time let’s not beat ourselves up too much about it, and let’s remember that messing around in the garden, kicking a ball about, playing catch with friends at school, whizzing around on a scooter, walking the dog, cycling to school, jumping up and down wildly on the brand new sofa and having a mad half hour just before bedtime, are all forms of physical activity that will help keep our children fit. In the face of all this I would, however, encourage you to take up exercise. It will keep you sane!

RESIDENTS AT THE ASHTON CARE HOME IN HINCKLEY WERE RECENTLY TREATED TO A 'GRATE' SELECTION OF CHEESES, WHEN THEY CELEBRATED THEIR VERY OWN FESTIVAL OF CHEESE

SWEET DREAMS ARE MADE OF CHEESE

ADVERT

T

he special three-day event at the specialist residential, nursing, dementia and respite care home, in John Street, was open to the public and followed its very successful Festival of Wine in May.

Care home manager Tracy Heyes purchased a wide selection of cheeses for everyone to taste and score with marks out of 10. Residents and guests also had factsheets on each cheese to help them learn about the cheese and make up their mind. Staff at The Ashton served a range of French cheeses on the first day before switching to a choice of cheeses from around the world and a collection of English cheeses on the last day.

Tracy said: “Some of our residents are often partial to some cheese and biscuits after dinner and put forward the idea recently at one of the residents’ meetings about us staging an event where they could taste lots of different cheeses and maybe try ones they hadn’t eaten before. We thought this sounded fantastic and was perfect after our very successful Festival of Wine which we held recently. We bought as many different cheeses as possible for our residents to try and they all had a fabulous time tasting them.

T

he beauty industry has an “innocent-until-provenguilty” approach to ingredients. Unless a chemical used in beauty products is proven to cause harm to human health, it is classified as GRAS, or “generally recognised as safe.” Cosmetic companies insist that these chemicals are safe for us to use- in small doses at least, but it is worth bearing in mind that over time the amount of chemicals our bodies are exposed to can build up.

Some chemicals do have reported known dangers including phthalates found in artificial fragrances which can disrupt hormones. Parabens are synthetic preservatives used in beauty products including deodorants, moisturisers and shampoos. Parabens allow these products to survive for months or even years without going off. Some studies are concerned that parabens can mimic hormones in the body and disrupt functions of the endocrine system. I would also recommend trying to avoid fragrance/parfum which are a catchall for hidden chemicals, such as phthalates. Fragrance has been connected to headaches, dizziness, asthma, and allergies. Mineral oil, a by-product of petroleum that’s used in baby oil, moisturisers, styling gels. It creates a film that impairs the skin’s ability to release toxins. Sodium lauryl (ether) sulphate (SLS, SLES) a former industrial degreaser now used to make soap foamy, it’s absorbed into the body and irritates skin. It would be almost impossible to eradicate the chemicals in all beauty regimes so I wouldn’t suggest it is something to be overly concerned about; however I would recommend introducing more natural products into your routine to help reduce the number of chemicals entering your system. Many of the most powerful and fast acting beauty ingredients stem from nature and I am sure you will be surprised by the results you can achieve by switching to more natural beauty products. Here are my recommendations for some of the best natural facial products on the market that you can use to give yourself a mini natural facial at home! Burt’s Bees is a brand I have been using for years, they started making fabulous lip salve but now offer a range of natural skincare products. They specialise in choosing and fusing raw ingredients from root and stem and bark and blossomthat work in harmony with your skin's natural chzemistry. Beeswax is another key ingredient used within many of their products as it helps to seal in moisture and keep skin conditioned. I love the

Burt’s Bees intense nourishing facial water as it is a great way to boost skins hydration with a gentle daily swipe over the skin. This moisturiser helps to naturally balance your skin's pH levels. Restore your skin back to its natural health today with rich nutrients that combine together to keep your skin healthy, with a helping hand from nature. All products within the Intense Hydration range are infused with a botanical called Clary Sage, which inspired the range as it is able to retain moisture in harsh climates. This product contains no traces of parabens, phthalates, petrolatum or SLS, has been dermatologist tested and is also non-comedogenic. Intense Facial Water RRP £11.49 Sensitive Moisturiser £16.49 www.burtsbees.co.uk

After cleansing my skin I like to apply the Burt’s Bees sensitive daily moisturising cream as it is a really light moisturiser containing organic Argan Oil, Manuka and plant extracts with a delicate aroma. This highly organic and natural face cream leaves the skin feeling smooth, supple and rejuvenated. Radience Serum RRP £19.99 www.burtsbees.co.uk

My top tip is to always massage the skin with your fingertips when you apply any face cream using upwards movements, it is a great way to stimulate the skin and increase circulation. If you want to be able to give yourself a natural facial at home, you may want to consider trying this clever new cleansing gadget LUNA™ play from Foreo. Using T-Sonic™ pulsation technology the Luna Play has been proven to remove 99.5% of dirt and oil plus makeup residue and dead skin cells. This deep cleansing action helps to enhance the absorption of skincare products and also helps refine skins texture. A powerful motor delivers 8,000 T-Sonic™ pulsations per minute dislodging impurities over one single, easy-to-operate intensity. It is easy to operate and travel friendly and will last up to 100 uses. Its ultra-hygienic silicone design is quick drying and non-porous to prevent bacteria build up. It comes in a range of seven vibrant colors: pearl pink, fuchsia, mint, purple, sunflower yellow, aquamarine and midnight. I opted for purple. RRP £29.99 www.foreo.com/luna-play Until next time…

VICTORIA SCRANAGE, OF BUTTERFLY BUSINESS IS AN EXPERT IN COLOUR ANALYSIS & CAN HELP YOU TO LOOK FABULOUS & RADIATE CONFIDENCE IN THE COLOURS & SHAPES THAT SUIT YOU AS AN INDIVIDUAL. LET’S FACE IT, YOU KNOW WHEN YOU LOOK AMAZING; YOUR FACE LIGHTS UP, YOUR EYES SPARKLE & EVERYONE PAYS YOU COMPLIMENTS – FOLLOW VICTORIA’S ADVICE TO FEEL AMAZING EVERY SINGLE DAY

against your face. If teal eliminates darkness from under your eyes then you’re an ‘Autumn’ (softer colours), but if the turquoise makes your face glow then you’re a ‘Spring’ (brighter colours). Sounds easy, doesn’t it? It is often thought that people with light hair will have ‘Summer’ or ‘Spring’ colouring and those with darker hair a ‘Winter’ or ‘Autumn’ palette, but this simply isn’t true!

TRUE COLOURS

E

veryone can wear any colour… it is the hue, tint, shade or tone that determines which suits us (or not)! We are all unique, but most people can be categorised into four areas of colour they look best in. These are named after the seasons; Summer, Winter, Spring and Autumn - however it may be that you are one of the special few who simply sit in a tonal group; Bright, Soft, Warm, Cool, Deep or Light. This is not to say you can’t wear colours from the other groups, but they would be ‘harder to wear’. A great tip with a ‘hard to wear colour’ is to mix it with a number of neutrals that you know you look great in. For example a ‘Winter’ will struggle to wear orange, but it can become a flattering accent colour when mixed with black and white – just ensure you keep the black and/or white closest to your face. Contrary to popular belief, colour analysis is not based on your skin tone, but rather the way a colour makes your skin appear. Wearing the wrong colour can make the area under your eyes darker and your skin

thebeaconmagazine.co.uk

93664_20-21_ButterflyBusiness.indd 21

look dull. To establish which season you are, firstly decide whether you have warm or cool colouring. You can do this by using a piece of fuchsia and salmon pink clothing (if you don’t have clothes in these colours, then just use accessories, towels, bedding or even paper instead). Hold both up to your face and look at yourself in a mirror, concentrating on the effect it has on your eyes and skin. Which do you look best in? If the salmon colour has a brightening effect on your skin then you will have warm colouring, but if the fuchsia makes your eyes whiter then you have cool. A top tip is to use a matt fabric, otherwise the light can affect the reflection and result of the test. After you have established whether you have warm or cool colouring, you need to see if you suit bright or softer colours. If you have cool colouring, then try on something that is mint green and another item in grass green. Which looks best? The softer colour means you’re a ‘Summer’, the brighter colour a ‘Winter’. Use a similar technique if you have warm colouring. Try a turquoise and a teal

butterflybusiness@mail.com

To confuse matters further, we can change our colour group too. For example, I was a ‘Summer’ for the first forty (‘ish!) years of my life, but have recently developed into a ‘Winter’! I became aware that I was less happy in brown and wanted to wear black more and more. I would shun anything that looked muted, preferring bold bright colours. I started to go grey! Going grey, as such, didn’t have anything to do with it but the colour I put on my hair wasn’t cool enough, as needed by a ‘Summer’, and so it brought a red out in my hair, that wasn’t there before. As a trained Colour Analyst this made me question what was happening!! I was confused, so had my colours done again and discovered that I’d simply moved into a ‘Winter’ palette. So a top tip to anyone who dresses for their colouring… make sure you chose the correct hair colour, either warm or cool to ensure it complements your natural hair colour instead of working against it! The Queen on the other hand has done the opposite. She was previously a ‘Winter’, but having just celebrated her ninetieth birthday, she has now become more summery in her colouring. If you look at photographs of her through the years it shows the transition clearly. During her early reign she wore bright, clear colours such as pillar box red and daffodil yellow. Now you will see her in softer more muted colours such as mint green and lilac. It can all be a little tricky getting to grips with, especially if it’s the first time you’re analysing your colouring, but just remember the most important element of colour analysis is to see the person not the outfit!

Gym Hair

DON’T CARE

WITH SO MANY DIFFERENT HAIRSTYLES AND ACCESSORIES NOWADAYS, AND LOTS OF US EXPERIMENTING WITH OUR OWN HAIR, A BAD HAIR DAY AT THE GYM JUST SIMPLY WON’T DO SAYS INDY

U

nless you are doing a sweat pounding cross-fit session or swimming, then you can still look good whilst keeping fit. Gym wear is one of the fastest growing areas of fashion today, especially the attire that crosses over into casual day wear so now, not only can look the part with what you wear, but also how you dress your hair. Long/medium length hair can be worn in many ways, after all you don't want it hanging in your face! So, obviously you can tie it back in a ponytail but try covering the hairband by wrapping some hair around it, or place the hair in a top knot or a bun, they look lovely. Boxer plaits (worn down each side of the head), braiding and plaiting off the face can all be done really quickly and allow you to work out better. Short hair is so easy but you can still use coloured bobby pins to pin fringes back, use hair dust to keep a bit of body and keep sweat at bay. If you do a lot of high cardio or hiit type of exercise, the chances are you will sweat a lot! What happens when you sweat is the salt build-up tends to get lodged in your hair and on your scalp, creating

0116 251 7170

indyhair@me.com

thebeaconmagazine.co.uk

93664_Indy.indd 23

a layer of salt and water, which leads to drying out of hair, and eventually can lead to breakage. Also, maintaining a healthy scalp means maintaining healthy hair. There are many tiny pores on our scalp, which breathe and absorb substances. The salt build up not only blocks these pores, but can sometimes get absorbed by them as well. Hence, sweat can damage your hair and scalp health. To avoid the damaging effects of sweat, it is important to cleanse your hair and scalp once you have finished your workout. If you can get away with just rinsing your hair by maybe shampooing around the front and back hairline then try and just use a gentle conditioner. If not, then use a mild shampoo to cleanse and then smooth with a conditioner afterwards. Just don’t over cleanse your hair - although this obviously depends on the intensity and frequency of your training and what you are doing after you finish at the gym. Get your stylist to show you some ways of wearing your hair, so that it is up or off your face and it is simple and quick enough for you to do. Look good and feel good to help you work out harder!

Nobody can predict the future

If you’re getting married, talking ‘pre-nups’ with your future spouse may not be the easiest or most romantic conversation to have. A ‘pre-nup’, or prenuptial agreement, is a contract entered into prior to marriage that includes provision for the division of property and financial support in the event of your marriage ending. It can be relevant if you are marrying later in life when you may have acquired assets separately, approaching a second marriage or you have children, to make sure your assets are protected for you. FIT &

I

Fabulous

t is generally based on the trend towards active wear as daywear and weekend wear, which we’ve seen as a fast growing theme on the runways for the past few seasons. With more consumers adopting the sportswear trend, it’s natural for many labels, designer and high street to create product that consumers want and are wearing.

A number of brands have added an active wear category to their offerings in recent months, with H&M, Ted Baker, Topshop, Net a Porter to name a few. Lots of celebrities are pictured in their gym kit and turning more towards fitness. Additionally classic sports brands such as Nike and Adidas are joining forces with luxury designers and celebrities at an alarming rate. Kanye West's Yeezy trainers sell out in minutes whenever they are released. It seems the celebrity fitness bug has sparked a massive surge in women’s fitness and active wear. I also believe that gym wear is becoming a more important element in our wardrobe. So many people are becoming interested in fitness now, which is a great thing. It is socially acceptable to go to the supermarket, hairdressers or get your nails done in your gym kit. It almost seems fashionable to do so. Personally I believe that how we look and what we wear in the gym has an impact on our workout and achieving your fitness goals. This may be a personal thing but for me and for my clients, it has a massive impact on how you feel. Having the right high-end workout gear has become so important. You still want to feel stylish and fashionable whilst still feeling secure during a workout. It’s important to feel confident when you walk into a packed gym or health club. When it comes to getting you sorted out in the sports style stakes the most important place to start, as I do with all my clients is the foundation… a well-fitting, supportive and flattering sports bra is a must. I’d personally try John Lewis, Bravissimo or Sweaty Betty for a free measure and fit service.

Photography: ©RiverIsland

Next up to consider is the type of sport you’ll be doing when it comes to picking the right clothing. There will be certain styles more suited to the activity than others. If you are unsure then take a look at what others around you are wearing. Yoga and Pilates is generally looser and more casual fitting than tight lycra, common for running and cardio classes. However this is also totally personal preference, so wear what you feel most comfortable and confident in.

thebeaconmagazine.co.uk

93664_22-23_Cleo-Sportswear.indd 27

As for wearing your gym kit on a day to day basis this might not be for everyone, myself included. I enjoy the gym (I have to with the amount of cake I eat!) but tight lycra leggings really isn’t my thing. Instead I have opted into the trend this year by treating myself to some funky footwear. There has been a big global influence of street style so the classic Stan Smiths are always a hit at fashion week. I opted for some white leather perforated Converse and some Adidas original Superstars with a metal rose gold toe which I actually love and look great with skinnies and a smart blazer. ANNIE STROWGER FROM CAREERPEA OFFERS SOME ADVICE TO PARENTS ON HOW TO COPE WITH THE STRESS OF WAITING FOR EXAM RESULTS

Are you facing a summer of

EXAM RESULT STRESS?

F

irst of all, well done you! You have survived revision, rehearsals, practice, cramming and all the other forms of preparation your child has put into completing their GCSE O and A Levels, along with 3 million other young people who will have taken exams this summer. You have planned studytime; reorganised and rescheduled meal times and leisure activities and other aspects of family life to accommodate the demands of your resident student and by now you may be thinking that you can all breathe a sigh of relief and head off for a well-earned family holiday and start enjoying a more peaceful home-life again. However, far from the stress being over for your child, now that exams are over, they may now hurtle straight into Exam Result Stress – the feelings of panic, guilt and fear about their forthcoming results. In a recent survey by Childline, 96% of the survey group said they had experienced exam stress continuing right up until results day in August and beyond, with 59% of those surveyed saying they felt pressure from parents to perform well. Half said they had skipped meals, two-thirds had trouble sleeping and 14%

said they had been drinking alcohol as a way to stay calm. Other ‘calming’ methods included drugs and self-harming. So what can you do to help? • Encourage them to talk about how they are feeling – they may think that no-one else feels like they do, but they do • Make a plan now for what happens if they don’t get the results/ grades they need • Research early – UCAS clearing; exam resits; apprenticeships; gap years & volunteering are all good places to start • Get help and support from a qualified, independent Careers Advisor to help you with planning the next step Remember, there are lots of successful people out there who didn’t get the exam results they were hoping for and some of the best opportunities come from life’s twists and turns. Good Luck. For more information please call 07880 835 155 or email: annie@careerpea.com | www.careerpea.com

T

here have already been a number of events celebrating Roald Dahl 100 at Southbank Centre’s Imagine Children’s Festival London — ranging from a London Schools Symphony Orchestra performance of Roald Dahl’s The Minpins to a “Dahl in a Day” reading of Matilda and the chance to contribute to a large installation of Dream Jars inspired by The BFG.

For March’s World Book Day, there was a special £1 book – The Great Mouse Plot by Roald Dahl, illustrations by Quentin Blake (Puffin) and also Penguin Random House launched a brand new look across all Roald Dahl’s stories for children — all illustrated by Quentin Blake. May saw the launch, by David Austin Roses, of a new English Rose named in Roald Dahl’s honour. The peach coloured rose, honouring Roald’s first major success as an author for children with James and the Giant Peach in 1961, was launched at the RHS Chelsea Flower Show. A percentage of sales from every Roald Dahl rose sold around the world will be donated to Roald Dahl’s Marvellous Children’s Charity. Charlie and the Chocolate Factory the Musical, directed by Sam Mendes, enters its fourth year in London’s West End in June, having completed more than 1000 performances and broken box office records at the Theatre Royal, Drury Lane. July brings the global release of the big screen adaptation of Roald Dahl’s THE BFG, directed by Steven Spielberg. The movie stars Mark Rylance as The BFG himself and newcomer Ruby Barnhill as young orphan Sophie. The BFG In Pictures, featuring Quentin Blake’s artwork for The BFG, will be staged at The House of Illustration in London. The BBC will celebrate Roald Dahl’s creativity across its services during the summer. Throughout 2016, the BBC will be running “Get Reading” – a campaign celebrating great authors and their works, with the aim to get the nation reading and sharing the books they love. The highlight of its children’s books season in Summer 2016 will be a major BBC Two documentary, Roald Dahl: In His Own Words, celebrating the life and work of Roald Dahl. Blue Peter will launch a “Dream BIG” competition, linking up with the film release of The BFG. The One Show will run two films about Roald Dahl. Radio 4 will broadcast dramatisations of Boy and Going Solo, whilst on Radio 3 there will be a week

We are looking forward to an extraordinary year celebrating Roald’s unique imagination, his beloved characters and unforgettable stories. The Summer Reading Challenge, the UK’s biggest annual reading promotion for children aged 4 – 11, will be themed The Big Friendly Read for 2016. Organised by The Reading Agency and the UK public library network, the Summer Reading Challenge will launch in July and support children in reading six or more library books of their choice over the summer holidays. Over 800,000 children take part each year in the UK alone. Roald Dahl’s birthday is September 13th and is always celebrated internationally as Roald Dahl Day. In September 2016, schools, libraries, bookshops and community groups around the world are invited to host their own party for Roald Dahl 100, using a comprehensive party kit, which will be free to download from roalddahl.com. At the same time, the hugely popular Dahlicious Dress Up Day will be marked in schools across the UK in support of Roald Dahl’s Marvellous Children’s Charity. Roald Dahl was born in Cardiff in 1916 and there will be celebrations in Wales to mark Roald Dahl 100 in the land of his birth. A bilingual, pan-Wales programme, delivered by Literature Wales, will engage the whole of Wales in literature, creative writing and reading. Then, over the weekend of September 17th/18th, Cardiff will be transformed into the City of the Unexpected – the biggest arts event ever to happen on the streets of Cardiff. Jointly produced by Wales Millennium Centre and National Theatre Wales and directed by Nigel Jamieson – who created the opening ceremony for the Sydney Olympics in 2000 – City of the unexpected will see everyday places across the whole city of Cardiff utterly transformed with well-loved Roald Dahl characters popping up in unexpected ways. 2016 is the Year of Adventure in Wales – a perfect fit with a great ambassador of adventure.

ADVERTORIAL |

FUNDING SCHOOL FEES IS ONE OF THE BIGGEST FINANCIAL COMMITMENTS A FAMILY CAN MAKE. AS A RESULT, IT CAN BE A SOURCE OF CONSIDERABLE CONCERN FOR SOME PARENTS

School Fees Planning

E

ven though the cost to send a child to an independent school has risen, there are now 517,113 pupils at ISC schools, up from 511,928 in 2014. (ISC census 2015)

The average overall fee, excluding nursery fees, increased by 3.6% between 2014 and 2015, on a like-for-like basis i.e. for those schools completing the census in both years. (ISC census 2015)

Latest figures from ISC show that the average fee at an ISC school was ÂŁ4,905 per term. (Source: Independent Schools Council Facts and Figures 2015). Providing a good education can be one of the most valuable gifts parents or grandparents can give to children. While the financial implications can be daunting, the key to affording school fees is to plan as early as you can. Saving soon after a child is born gives ten years to build a fund for when they go to secondary school. Generally, parents looking to fund school fees fall into three categories - those who want to invest a lump sum, those who would like to spread the cost of fees, or parents wanting to set up regular savings scheme to provide funds to cover future fees. There are several schemes available to help school fees more affordable, and an experienced wealth manager can draw up a bespoke investment plan that can be

both tax efficient and flexible. For example, you could consider using your annual tax-free ISA allowance. By investing the maximum amount permitted in an ISA and selecting funds run by full-time professional investment managers, a tidy sum could be accumulated in the space of ten years. For grandparents, trust* planning can be a useful tool if they wish to make provision for school fees and achieve Inheritance Tax (IHT) benefits at the same time. If they make regular payments from their income without reducing their lifestyle, then these gifts are not counted as part of their estate for inheritance tax purposes. Another option is to give a lump sum for their grandchildren's education and provided they survive for a further seven years, the gift is free of IHT. Grandparents might also want to consider other solutions, such as life assurance, to help increase the funds created for grandchildren. This can be very useful when there is more than one child you wish to provide for.

With interest rates still at an all time low, and the country only slowly coming out of recession, it is important to make your investments work as hard for you as possible.

The history of financial markets has shown consistently that a measured long term view is always the best approach to investing.

15,000 PEOPLE, INCLUDING A PRINCE, PRESIDENT AND FIRST LADY, FILLED THE STANDS OF CHAMPION STADIUM FOR THE INVICTUS GAMES ORLANDO 2016 OPENING CEREMONY. FOR MANY IT WAS AN EXCITING FEW HOURS OF THEIR LIVES, BUT FOR ESTEEMED CREATIVE PRODUCER SARA DONALDSON AND HER CO-EXECUTIVE PRODUCER CHRIS LAUE IT WAS EIGHT MONTHS IN THE MAKING

INVICTUS GAMES In September 2015, they were tasked with developing and executing Prince Harry’s vision for the Games. Drawing on her experience planning for the ceremonies at the inaugural Invictus Games in 2014, Donaldson aimed to put on a show that demonstrated the growth of the Games. She succeeded. Donaldson said the only thing about the Ceremony that did not go exactly as planned was that the event ran over the allotted time due to the number of standing ovations and cheering from the crowd. According to Donaldson, the most powerful moments arguably belonged to the three storytellers U.S. Air Force Master Sgt. Israel Del Toro Jr., LCpl John-James Chalmers and Louis Nethercott, who each took the stage to standing ovations and silenced the crowd with their stories of how they overcame their visible and invisible wounds of war. What was the inspiration for the Opening Ceremony? We worked on the Invictus Games London 2014 so the “I AM” Invictus branding was our starting point, but our intention with this show was to allow the wounded, injured and ill servicemen and women to share their stories, however painful and personal, on a world stage.

Photography: Getty for Invictus Games Foundation

What goes into the planning process and what don’t people realise? We started preparing in September and took our first walkthrough of the site in October. An incredible amount of detail and planning went into the ceremonies and developing all of the creative elements. But it was all worth it. What was it like seeing the venue finished? It’s one thing to see it all on paper but quite another to see it come to life. It was incredible to see all of our months of work pay off and to see the way the crowd reacted. We wanted to touch the hearts and souls of competitors, their families and the public – and we think we accomplished just that. Any sneak previews for Invictus Games Toronto 2017? In London, we weren’t able to focus on the continuation of the Games because we didn’t know where it would go next. This time around, we will properly pass on the flag to Canada. Stay tuned.

Styled for Success

A

leading British designer known for sharp tailoring and effortless style, Stella McCartney has worked with adidas’ leading innovation experts and athletes to create the ultimate fusion of fit, function and style.

A two-year creative design process included extensive testing and consultation with elite adidas athletes including Jessica Ennis-Hill and Laura Trott, to ensure the kit performs to the requirements of each individual and team sport represented at the Games.

Her signature modern design is at the centre of the 2016 kit. Featuring a new official British Coat of Arms, specially created for this project, the collection is inspired by the collision of this icon of tradition with a 21st Century attitude.

When creating apparel and footwear for elite athletes, performance is paramount. The 2016 kit features cutting-edge adidas innovation to perform better than ever before, including a new generation of breathable synthetic ADIZERO® fabric making outfits on average 10% lighter than 2012, helping athletes go further and faster.

“The goal for Rio 2016 was to rewrite the rules of performance and design for athletes, allowing them to look and feel like champions on and off the field. The inspiration behind the design was this idea of contrasting British tradition with a modern attitude. The new Coat Of Arms, specially commissioned for this project, and traditional Union Flag hues sit alongside bold textures and modern silhouettes to create a strong identity and make the athletes feel like a team.” Said Stella. AFTER DESIGNING THE HUGELY SUCCESSFUL 2012 KIT, STELLA MCCARTNEY HAS RETURNED AS CREATIVE DIRECTOR OF TEAM GB TO ENSURE THE NATION’S LEADING COMPETITORS ARE ON TRACK FOR SUCCESS IN STYLE THIS SUMMER

The Coat of Arms was designed over an 18-month period by Clive Cheesman, an officer of arms at the College of Arms in London. Its design pays homage to the four home nations within the UK, but also alludes to the unity of the Olympic and Paralympic teams within Team GB. The principal element on the shield is a unified group of the floral emblems of the four home nations. Four chain links hold them together at the centre, representing the four years of the Olympic/Paralympic cycle.

To combat Rio’s hot and humid summer climate, CLIMACHILL™ technology is used across track and field apparel, cycling jerseys and tennis tees providing the ultimate cooling sensation via aluminium silver dots bonded into the fabric at the body’s key heat zones. 2012 Olympic Gold Medallist Jessica Ennis-Hill said: “I’ve really enjoyed being a part of the creative process with Stella McCartney and adidas. It’s an amazing design and I think it will give British athletes a massive sense of pride and give us an edge in Rio." 2015 World Champion Gymnast Max Whitlock said; “When I first saw the kit in February last year I began my countdown to being able to put it on. It’s wicked. I can’t wait to compete in Rio wearing this design.”

Runners from all age groups and backgrounds showed up in force for its 31st year to raise essential funds for a variety of local causes, including LOROS, Rainbows, County Air Ambulance Service, Age UK, Eye Camps and RNLI. THE NAME OF LEICESTER TIGERS WILL BE A NEW ADDITION TO WHEELCHAIR RUGBY TOURNAMENTS IN THE UK AND EUROPE THIS SEASON AND BEYOND

WHEELCHAIR RUGBY Played on a basketball court by individuals with upper and lower limb disability in specially-constructed custom-fitted wheelchair rugby chair, wheelchair rugby is certainly a fast paced and tactical game. Full contact is allowed between players' chairs, hence why they are customised to the measurements of each player. They take a beating! But unlike able-bodied rugby, much of the work and many hits happen on the chairs off the ball, so crossing is not a penalty - and although no physical body contact is allowed, aggression is definitely a must!

Anyone interested in training, becoming a player or becoming part of the volunteer staff can contact James Price at chairman@mtwrc.org.uk or Hettie Freke on 0116 2245 872. Training is at De Montfort University's 'QEII Leisure Centre' in Leicester on Fridays from 12.30pm-3.30pm. A second session is held on Wednesday evenings (7pm-10pm) at the Lee Westwood Leisure Centre, Nottingham Trent Clifton Campus. imon who lives in Thorpe Satchville, rode at domestic senior level from 1989 – 1996; a career that included European (amateur) International races in France, Belgium, Spain and Germany, top ten performances in UK National events along with many wins at a regional level, including winning the British Cycling East Midlands RR Championship twice. This all came to an abrupt end when he was hit by a car whilst out training in March 1997. The accident resulted in spinal damage and ultimately a paralysed left leg and at the time the end of Simon’s cycling career. That was however until after job redundancy in early 2010, and with more time on his hands Simon started enjoying a few social rides through the summer, which soon progressed into attending local club runs and before too long he was “bitten by the bug”, again! So decided to contact British Cycling to discuss the way forward with competing as a Para-cyclist and was promptly invited to attend a Classification day.

WIN! 2 BOOKS CYCLING THE EARTH (£12.99) Sean Conway writes the candid and inspiring behind-the-scenes story of how he resurfaced from a dead-end life, to become one of the UK’s most celebrated adventurers and sporting record-breakers.

Simon started racing again in April 2011 initially in Able Bodied races, but had to wait until the end of May for his first Para-Cycling event in Piacenza, Italy and his first outing with the GB team, where he finished 4th. His 2011 season finale was the World Championships in Denmark where he won the Bronze Medal in the Road Race. Classified as a C2 (solo bike categories C1-5), Simon rides with just the use of his right leg and has gone on to win the UCI World Cup Road Race in Segovia 2013, to become, National Para-cycling Time Trial Champion, represent Great Britain at the 2015 UCI Paracycling Road World Championships and win bronze in the time-trial at the 2016 UCI Para-cycling Road World Cup in Belgium.

“My aim from the outset was to compete for the GB Para-Cycling team and to be competitive at World level.” Now in his 6th and by far his most successful season to date, Simon has won the British Cycling National TT for a 3rd year as well as adding the Circuit race, along with the Verola Cup in Italy, and gaining his first Time Trial podium at World level and hopes for the success to continue this month at the Bilbao World Cup.

IT’S THE REMARKABLE STORY THAT SEEMED AN IMPOSSIBLE DREAM; BUT NOW AS THE DUST IS JUST ABOUT SETTLING AND IT’S FINALLY SINKING IN THAT LEICESTER CITY FOOTBALL CLUB ARE PREMIER LEAGUE CHAMPIONS 2016, BEACON’S SPORTS CORRESPONDENT PHIL HOLLOWAY REFLECTS ON THEIR INCREDIBLE VICTORY

The Unbelievable Story I

used to be carried on my Dad’s shoulders down past the Royal and along Brazil Street and then onto Filbert Street. He would lift me over the barriers and I would sit on his knee. The smell of beer and cigars wafted around and still to this day the smell reminds me of being that 5 year old watching the likes of Weller, Whitworth, Birchenall and then Lineker, Young and Wallington. It was 1976 and my love affair with the Foxes began, and since then I have witnessed many lows, quite a lot of average players and just every now and then enough excitement to ensure that I kept coming back for more and more football. But as a kid, wearing my Umbro City kit proudly, and kicking the ball around on the park, I used to day dream of scoring the winner at Wembley for Leicester. But in my 39 years of watching Leicester it never ever ever crossed my mind that we would go and win the top division! Call it the old First division, call it the Premier league, you could rename it to any sponsors name in the future [and they probably will] but I never thought sat at the top of the 92 football clubs, above Manchester United, Arsenal and Chelsea would sit our team. And if I am honest, I STILL don’t believe it!

The whole world now knows our story. For years I have travelled abroad and when asked where I came from, people would look puzzled when the answer was Leicester. I would help them out by letting them know it was a City near to Nottingham, and the thoughts of Robin Hood and Brian Cloughs Forest would help them out. Recently on a trip to Poland I was again asked where was I from… but this time when I told them the answer, their faces lit up and they started to dance around chanting Vardy Vardy and then grasped my hand and congratulated me on an outstanding achievement as if it was I who had done something amazing.

Still struggling to grasp the concept that Leicester City are Champions, I took to the streets of Leicester to ask local fans what they thought. Scott Davies is a Policeman, but follows Leicester home and away with his daughter and I asked him when was the time he felt like the impossible could actually happen. Scott replied “For me, Crystal Palace away was the moment I knew

Leicester City, our team just down the road, has given the world something to smile about. Given hope to those that have none. Given the underdog the chance to “do a Leicester”, to beat the odds and to achieve things which many had thought were simply beyond a believable dream.

we would do it. We ground out another 1-0, were slightly fortunate at the end when Palace hit the bar, but the realisation came from all the fans and they sang their hearts out for about 40 minutes after the final whistle. It was breathtaking.” And those scenes of Leicester fans singing away at Crystal Palace after the stadium was empty, were again shown around the world. These fans from Leicester simply couldn’t believe what was happening… but happening it was! Dan Middleton, aged 20 from Birstall told me “It's a surreal feeling. Seeing us go from dropping down to League One with Matt Oakley as skipper, to now, winning the Premier league it's the best moment of my footballing life and what we have achieved won't ever be replicated again!” Ethan, aged 18 from Glen Pava said “It was only last summer that I was saying to my dad how heartbreaking it was that, as a fan of a team like Leicester, no matter how well we did we'd never reach the top levels of success. That's what makes it all the more sweet, to say that my team are the ones that have changed football forever and given hope to hundreds of teams and thousands of fans just like me.” It was just 8 years ago in 2008 that Leicester dropped for the first time to League one. Never in their history since 1884 had they sunk so low. I was standing in the away end at Stoke getting soaked in the rain as the Foxes under Ian Holloway [no relation!] couldn’t quite get a win to keep us up. The final whistle came and 4,000 Leicester fans sunk to our sodden knees and watched as 20,000 Stoke fans sung Delilah until their lungs were almost bursting and were promoted.

Call 0116 222 1000 or visit www.sports-pad.co.uk presentation of the trophy at the last home game against Everton brought unprecedented scenes around the whole of Leicester and the ground, with fans from around the world as well as locals gathering to soak up the atmosphere. The parade itself saw reportedly 250,000 Leicester people take to the streets and cheer on the open top bus parade followed by Glastonbury type scenes on Victoria Park. Could you have ever dreamed this would happen? I know I never did, and if I am honest I am still waiting to wake up from the best dream I have ever had, nobody wake me up, not until we have go on and win the Champions League next season, now who fancies another long odds bet…

It did us some good, perhaps you have to hit an all time low before you dust yourself down. That shows true character. Non more than Andy King, who has been with Leicester City since 2004 as a young talent. He has had the most downs and ups than any other player ever and as well as representing his Welsh team internationally, King has won championship medals with Leicester for League One, The Championship and now the Premier League Champions. The outpouring of emotion when Leicester were confirmed as Champions, as Spurs drew at Ranieri’s old club Chelsea, saw thousands erupt from their homes onto the streets of Leicester. The

eicester City Football Club players are one of the most closely watched football teams on the planet right now, and it’s no wonder that fans are flocking to emulate their favourite footie players’ style. From the Vardy barnet to Captain Morgan’s drinking style, anything the blue boys are touching turns to gold. So it’s no surprise then that fans, and fashion aficionados alike are heading to the Official LCFC Jeweller to kit themselves out with some of the finest jewellery in Leicestershire. It’s hard to believe that Lanes Fine Jewellery have only been around for three years. Located just a short walk away from the Highcross, it is owned by husband and wife team Carli and Ercan Onguc, who pride themselves on not only stocking some of the most beautiful jewellery in the industry, but bringing that personal touch to their customer service as well as being involved with some of the most prestigious and high profile events in Leicestershire.

Players both old and new all head to Lanes when they’re looking to buy something a little special, whether it be a new watch, an engagement ring, or just a statement piece for a celebratory night out!

M

ulti-award winning author Harry Harris was at Marco’s New York Italian on the 4th June to launch his in-depth, authoritative and comprehensive diary of Leicester City’s extraordinary Premier League season.

The Foxes lifted the Premier League trophy at an emotionally charged King Power Stadium in May and have since gone on to celebrate their extraordinary success. The amazing story is documented by Harry in “The Immortals”, which has seen unprecedented success and news media coverage. With comment from former England, Chelsea, and indeed Spurs manager Glenn Hoddle, and former Spurs manager Harry Redknapp, the book is set for immense success following the Foxes’ win.

As the players get more attention and column inches, Lanes get more enquiries due to them providing and creating specially commissioned jewellery and accessories for the players, from special events to high profile weddings. From bespoke custom made jewellery, to statement pieces and much more, Lanes are happy to cater to all tastes and preferences, and have a wide range of pieces to suit all budgets. The have plenty of exciting ideas for the future, and the tie with LCFC won’t be ending any time soon. They’re yet another shining example of some of the best that Leicester City has to offer. Lanes Fine Jewellery, 25, Loseby Lane, Leicester, LE1 5DR

Harry Harris, author of “The Immortals” commented on the layout of the book: “The Immortals tells the story of the most unlikely Premier League season of all time, arguably the most amazing season ever. Not just the games, but behind the scenes, what the players, manager, owners, everyone connected to the club, and most especially the fans, all had to say about the what has been universally hailed as a footballing ‘miracle’. This is not just a ‘scrapbook’ of everything encapsulated in one single season belonging to one individual club. This is a story loved and cherished by every single fan irrespective of their allegiances. ” The book (£9.99 from Amazon), has already featured in Charlie Sale’s Daily Mail column commenting that it will be the first book on Leicester’s historic season.

WHETHER YOU’D LIKE TO ENJOY THE GREAT OUTDOORS, SAVE MONEY COMMUTING OR GETTING ABOUT TOWN, IMPROVE YOUR FITNESS OR HAVE ADVENTURES, CYCLING CAN BE ENORMOUS FUN. HERE ARE SOME TOP TIPS FROM SALLY MIDDLEMISS, BRITISH CYCLING RIDE LEADER AND OWNER OF LOCAL BIKE SHOP RUTLAND CYCLING, TO GET YOU OUT PEDALLING IN COMFORT AND STYLE

WHAT TO GET It’s possible to start cycling with a cheaper bike, but if you’re planning to ride on a regular basis, it’s definitely worth investing in a bicycle with a lighter weight frame, made from aluminium or carbon fibre, and good-quality components that will stand a bit of wear and tear.

some of the work in, but the battery power will give you a boost when you need it. Some models come fully equipped with an integrated lock, light, rack and mudguards, so you’re ready to go!

HOW TO CHOOSE THE RIGHT BIKE FOR YOU I’d strongly recommend that you visit your local bike shop, for expert advice and to see and try some different models. At Rutland Cycling, we’ve been helping people discover their pedal power for over 30 years. We’d love to share our passion and knowledge with you - no question is too small or silly. We have two large shops at Rutland Water, open every day, as well as stores nearby in Peterborough, Fineshade Woods and Grafham Water and five stores in Cambridge. If you’d like to test ride a bike before buying it, that’s no problem – we have the UK’s largest cycle hire and demo fleet, including electric bikes, so come along and take a few bikes out for a spin!

HOW TO LEARN

Photography: Courtesy of Rutland Cycling

These days bikes come in many shapes and sizes, but if you’re just starting out, I’d suggest you opt for one of these three popular styles: mountain bike, road bike or hybrid bike. The best option for you will depend on where and how you plan to ride: if you’ll be doing all your pedalling on roads, a road bike will get you there quickest. If you prefer going off the beaten track along bumpy trails, go for a mountain bike. If you fancy doing a bit of both, then as long as the offroad terrain’s not too uneven, a hybrid bike is your perfect choice.

If you live near one of our cycle centres at Rutland Water, Grafham Water or Cambridge, come and join us on one of our regular rides. Novices – and those getting back into the saddle – are very welcome! Our rides are all free to take part in, or you can hire a bike from us at a special discounted rate. We organise specific rides for women, as part of the British Cycling Breeze network, and for ‘silver’ (aka older!) cyclists, in partnership with U3A. All our ride

If you’re looking to ride that little bit faster or further, or are recovering from an injury or illness, then an electric bike is an ideal option. An e-bike provides all the advantages of a regular bike, while reducing the strain on your body by giving you an assisted electronic boost. E-bikes are also a lovely way to explore the local countryside, enjoying all the sights and sounds without getting out of puff! You do still need to put

information, including dates, routes and meeting points, can be found at www.rutlandcycling.com/rides. • Alternatively, consider joining a local cycling club. You don’t need to be an expert cyclist, and tips and activities with other people will help you stay motivated and may even help you enjoy the sport more. HOW TO ENJOY YOUR RIDE

Here’s a quick checklist to help you increase your riding comfort and avoid common cycling complaints. • Stay hydrated before, during and after your ride – take a water bottle or rucksack with hydration pack with you on your ride • Wear a helmet to protect your head • Change your hand and body positions regularly to prevent stiffness • Keep arms loose and elbows bent to absorb the bumps when you’re riding over rougher terrain • Avoid pedalling in a high gear for long periods of time, to avoid knee strain • Ride the correct size bike: come to any of our shops and we’ll make sure you’re fitted up with the right-sized bike for you. We also offer a full Body Geometry Bike Fit service, if you’re looking to improve your performance and comfort on the bike • Wear the right clothing: padded shorts are a good start, and hi-vis clothing will help you ‘be safe, be seen’ on the roads. Stuffing a lightweight wind-and-water-resistant jacket in

your back pocket is also a smart move, with our changeable British weather! Use a decent pair of cycling shoes: whether you opt for standard cycling shoes or a clipless shoe/pedal system, using a shoe designed for cycling will greatly improve comfort… and help you go faster! Invest in a good saddle: having the right-sized saddle can make a huge difference to your comfort on the bike, particularly if you plan to ride longer distances. The width of our sit bones vary considerably from one person to the next, and it’s not always the case that bigger people have wider sit bones. Rutland Cycling offer a free saddle fit service in all our shops and our expert team are here to help you choose a saddle that’s perfectly fitted to you

Checking out what the cool people are into is also something we like to do, daily blogs like Remodelista are great for spotting up-and-coming trends and the best, most stylish or beautifully made retail products around. We have retailers all over the world, soft toys by Danish company Maileg, who make the most delightful little mice in pure linens and cottons. Jewellery made by a small company in Thailand that also sells to the Ibizan bohemian markets and beautiful copper tools that have been made in Austria for decades, these tools are becoming more and more covetable for their benefits to the soil.

It starts by choosing things that look good with our kitchens, kitchenalia old and new, vintage school chairs and cool metal stools, we source these from antique fairs and folk we have got to know all over Europe. We then wanted to introduce a few select new gifts and cards, so we were careful to choose artisan makers and where suitable, English made items. We have a girl in Brighton who makes origami cards for us and another lady up in Yorkshire who makes quirky notepads and cards along with many other really special greeting cards and gift wraps. We also like to offer items that are produced in other countries by people who specialise in a particular craft. For instance, our Izola candles are made in America by a New York design company. They are not the cheapest candles but the styling and smell is unbeatable, Liberty’s and J Crew stock these candles, but now you can get them in Leicestershire.

We love books here at deVOL and have a couple of big refectory tables where we always see our customers stopping to flick through and choose from the eclectic collection. There is something for nearly everyone; interior and style books, children’s books with a theme of beautiful illustrations and some slightly more avantgarde cookery and travel books.

We also stock Parkminster candles, little tins made in Sussex which sell for £5.00 each, I spotted them in an uber cool shop in Spitalfields recently. We do the

An Arts and Crafts Kitchen in Kent A stunning new kitchen using Shaker cupboards and vintage accessories all by deVOL A lady popped into our London showroom and loved everything she saw, so she bought a Real Shaker Kitchen and all the vintage gifts we had for sale. She wanted to re-create our classic deVOL look in her own home, the results were fabulous and what she created has become one of our most popular kitchens to date, racking up over a thousand likes on Instagram in the first few hours it was launched. The house was a beautiful Arts and Crafts property, built in 1887 in Chislehurst, Kent. It had incredible high ceilings, beautiful big spacious rooms full of light and original wooden panelling and a very special minstrels’ gallery above the kitchen. The styling of the whole room was centred around a beautifully renovated parquet floor, the warm colours of the woods on the floor, table and island all gave a lovely tactile feel to this kitchen. It was just like walking into a very cool restaurant or old school dining hall. Big double doors and leather club chairs for relaxing in the sun, a skinny long refectory table with a wonderful assortment of old school chairs and benches looked

just the part. A bank of four of our pantry cupboards, sat against the back wall, they are big deep cupboards, housing a full height fridge and freezer and two pantries, yet in this kitchen they were quietly understated and perfectly proportioned. If you are looking for something special for your home, something to transform a room into a photoshoot or instgrammable worthy space, then do come and visit us at Cotes Mill. We have so much cool stuff here, from unusual gifts to vintage school cupboards and beautiful old kitchen tables. The Cotes Mill showrooms are open Monday to Friday from 8.30am – 5pm and Saturdays from 10am – 5pm. The Clerkenwell showroom is open Monday to Friday from 9am – 5.30pm and Saturdays from 10am – 5pm. For design appointments we do recommend booking in advance, but you are always more than welcome to drop in to either showroom to view the lovely kitchen displays and vintage gifts and furniture.

athrooms are a place to hide away, they are a personal space and a haven where you can close the doors and be alone. Running a bath and jumping in is one of life’s greatest simple pleasures, I’m not sure enough people take advantage of this daily ritual. There is so much stress relieving talk, life is tough and we sometimes need to spend money to help us get over the toils of daily life, but I think a bath can do wonders and its right there for you every day. So for me, making your bathroom a place of calm ethereal beauty is so worth it. Most of us have smallish bathrooms, which is actually nice, it cocoons you in a safe way. However, there is something very opulent about having a big bathroom, a place to soak and a place to sit, a beautiful piece of furniture to house your basins and some glamourous lighting. Big or small a bathroom should be beautiful in a practical way, it should have really good quality fixtures and fittings that will last, bathrooms are the one room in a house that can look tired and grubby quite quickly so it’s worth spending a little more in the first place. I love a bathroom with character, beautiful homemade tiles or a simple painted floor. A soft colour pallet and a few quirky bits to give it individuality.

THANKS TO TODAY'S WARMER CLIMATE, SUMMER NOW STRETCHES INTO EARLY OCTOBER, SO FRANCES HUNT EXPLAINS HOW SELECTING SUITABLE PLANTS AND SHRUBS CAN EXTEND THE COLOUR IN YOUR GARDEN THROUGH LATE SUMMER AND WELL INTO THE AUTUMN

L AT E olour

Summer C

I

t is that lovely time of year when all your hard work in the garden through the spring pays off, with the garden looking fantastic. Or at least, if there are bits of the garden that you’re unhappy with, you’ve looked at them for so blooming long by now that they just pass you by! There is one common complaint about this time of year in the garden, however. At the time that we spend the most time in the garden, there is quite often rather a ‘lull’ in actual flowers! Yes, of course the plants have grown into gorgeous clumps at this time of year, but are any of them actually flowering? It is quite common to have a wealth of spring interest in the garden, with Rhododendrons, Magnolias, Azaleas, and, of course, jolly Daffodils, but see if you can try to squeeze in a few plants with summer interest also.

BUDDLEJA WEIREYANA ‘SUN GOLD’ Not your usual Buddleja, you won’t recognise it! Rather than long panicles of flowers in purple tones that we know and love on the Butterfly Bush, this unusual shrub has rounded clusters of orangeyellow flowers held alongside dainty narrow deep green leaves. Absolutely great for butterflies and insects too.

CISTUS ‘SILVER PINK’ This is an old stalwart that I must have planted in pretty much every garden that we’ve had the pleasure to work in over the years! Not only are Cistus one of the most prolific flowering shrubs, they are also evergreen, keeping their leaves throughout the year. Cistus ‘Silver Pink’ has lovely silver tinged leaves, against which crepe paper baby pink flowers with yellow centres are borne. Cistus is a successional flowerer, meaning that it remains covered in bud, ready to flower as soon as the previous flowers fade. Do remember to keep on top of pruning Cistus, as they tend to get rather leggy and untidy if left to their own devices. Lightly trim all over once flowered to maintain a compact, rounded habit. Restorative hard pruning can also sometimes be worth a try if they have been left to get out of hand.

looks fab teamed with white Clematis or Campsis ‘Madame Galen’ for a tropical riot of colour. It also has a fantastic scent too!

HYDRANGEA PANICULATA We often associate Hydrangea with the rather old fashioned, garish blue and pink mophead Hydrangeas that were so common in our parents and grandparents gardens. However, there is a ‘classier’ and more modern alternative. Hydrangea paniculata have cone shaped flowers which are borne at the end of the summer. Available in a variety of colours, ranging from lime green to deep pink, these medium sized shrubs can be a great gap

ROSE ‘ZEPHERINE DROUHIN’ Ok, I admit it, Roses aren’t really my ‘thing’. I often find them either washed out or blousy, and they tend to look far too dull for far too much of the year for my liking. ‘Zepherine Drouhin’, however, is a different story. A climbing rose, with hot pink flowers and thornless stems, this rose performs throughout the summer and

filler, and can take partial shade also. Hydrangea flowers are very dynamic, changing colour as the flowers mature, creating a lovely effect as they fade to deeper tones. They also have great autumn colour, making them useful to extend interest in the garden through the autumn.

PENSTEMON ‘GARNET’ There are of course hundreds of perennials that flower through the summer

season. However, there are some that really do go the extra mile, like this Penstemon. Pretty deep pink-magenta bell shaped flowers are borne through the whole summer, then the whole autumn, absolutely non-stop. Semi evergreen, keeping its attractive, lance shaped leaves through all but the coldest winters, see if you can fit a group of three in somewhere; you won’t be disappointed.

VERBENA BONARIENSIS I cannot rave about this perennial enough, with tall, erect stems bearing gorgeous clusters of vibrant purple flowers. If you don’t have any Verbena bonariensis in your garden, you must go and buy some. Immediately. Verbena does have a tendency to seed itself around once established in a garden, however once you have one plant you will happily open your heart (and garden) to as many seedlings as it chooses to grace you with. Standing at around 5 feet tall, this is a back of border plant that moves gracefully in the wind and supports itself admirably without

the need for plant stakes or supports. Do make sure that you cut back in March to a few inches from the base so that the new growth emerges from the base of the plant. A few years ago during a mild winter, many Verbena bonariensis resprouted higher up, on the previous years growth, making rather strange shaped and unstable plants for the year!

THIS ISSUE, KIM SUTHERLAND OF FLOWERHOUSE INTRODUCES US TO ‘HORTICULTURAL THERAPY’, HELPING US CONNECT WITH THE GREAT OUTDOORS TO PROMOTE A FEELING OF WELL-BEING

N

HAPPY DAYS

ature herself is the primary force. There are multiple ways we can all benefit from a simple reconnection with our planet, whether it’s enjoying the dusk light, the sound of a trickling stream or the smell of freshly mown grass.

A notable failing of our time is lack of ‘grounding’; a deeper connection with the greater rhythms of the planet and the rotation of seasonal transference, now lost in a mass of digital frequencies, competitive frenzy and just plain ‘busyness’. Diffusion, confusion, distraction, addiction, compulsion - all of which can be generally alleviated to some degree by regular contact with the peaceful ebb and flow of nature. Scientists have proven how our chemical responses alter within five minutes of being in contact with a plant and how soil has antidepressant ‘Prozac-like’ qualities and how sunshine releases endorphins. There’s a long list, and that’s before we get onto actual gardening or the pleasure of growing and eating your own produce. Much of the evidence is anecdotal. Through gardening with children I have witnessed the journey from anger and insecurity to calmer waters many times, like watching a flower unfurl. Often the joy is in giving them something they are good at. Anyone can garden. I know

it works and have come to trust the effects of horticultural therapy, like knowing a rose will bloom in June. To find out though you have to try it for yourself often first by growing one small seed in a pot… Mental health associations have long been aware of the link between gardening (both participatory and visual) and health. Cities such as Bristol lead the way with urban and community gardening projects. Did you know urban estates planted with flowers have a lower incidence of crime? The RHS increasingly promotes gardening for well-being through projects such as the campaign for School Gardening and Greening Grey Britain, The growth of Guerilla Gardening and patchwork enterprises like Front Garden Food are testament to the growing trend toward re-establishing community cohesion and the benefits of simple digging, growing and eating together. So no matter how large or small your effort, from planting a pot for summer scent by the back door to re-designing a whole garden, enjoy. Lose yourself for a minute and begin to find yourself again. Take advantage of the great gifts that nature has always offered… respite and restoration for the soul. Based in Kibworth Beauchamp 079855 402973 | www.flowerhouse.co.uk

WHETHER YOU NEED A QUICK AND HEALTHY DINNER RECIPE, WANT TO MASTER THE WORLD'S HEALTHIEST RECIPES, OR YOU JUST WANT TO KNOW WHAT YOUR GLUTENFREE AND KALE-OBSESSED FRIENDS ARE TALKING ABOUT, LOOK NO FURTHER, SAYS TRUSTED FOOD WRITER ANISHA MISTRY

FUEL your Fitness

I

t is no secret that understanding a good balance of exercise and nutrition goes a long way and knowing what to take is extremely important. Consuming a blend of proteins after exercise can help build stronger muscles, increase training effectiveness and speed up muscle recovery time. Apart from exercising, our bodies need protein for healthy skin and hair and a protein-packed breakfast prevents overeating.

Pre workout snack

PEANUT BUTTER & BANANA ON TOAST • 2 tbsp natural peanut butter • ½ banana, sliced • 1 slice of wholegrain toast 1 Smother your toast with peanut butter and scatter the sliced bananas on top and oh my!

We all know that breakfast is the most important meal of the day but for those of us who manage to squeeze in some much needed exercise into their daily routine, pre workout food is just as important. Everyone is different and depending on what our nutritional requirements are finding the right balance of nutrients in snacks to satisfy our hunger, give us energy and aid in recovery should be taken into consideration.

A CLASSIC FRUIT CUP IS AN IDEAL PRE WORK SNACK & SUPER SWEET!

Our bodies constantly work to build muscle and recover. Smart pre workout snacks give the body the energy it needs to burn fat, and recover the best it can and should be eaten 30-60 mins in advance.

1 Place the cheese into the bowl and top with the mixed fruit and voila!

Energy boosting snacks For many of us around 3pm most weekdays there seems to be a serious fall in energy, so here are some tasty options to bring back that energised state of mind and keep you alert and working harder and better even at the slowest part of the day. • Nuts are packed full of healthy unsaturated fats, protein, fibre and other essential vitamins and minerals and if roasting, go for unsalted and unsweetened nuts. • Seeds have similar nutritional benefits to nuts from calcium, potassium to protein. Adding seeds helps to give an extra boost of nutrients and flavour. • Dried fruit should be used in moderation, look for options which have little sugar and low in preservatives. However they are a great source in fibre, vitamins and antioxidants. • Sweets are perfect if you use sparingly. When using chocolate choose dark varieties for extra doses of antioxidants.

Post workout Drink So, what's next after going to the gym? Hydrate...of course! But before reaching for that sugary sports drink, maybe think about a post workout protein shake instead.

ENERGY BOOST MIX :

A strawberry, almond & chia smoothie is the perfect way to quench your thirst after an intense workout. It is easy to make, it’s yummy and packed full of protein, antioxidants, calcium and fibre.

1 Place all the ingredients into a large bowl combine all the ingredients and store in an airtight container.

30gms: goji berries, pistachios, dried blueberries, flax seeds & dark chocolate chips.

PIZZAEXPRESS RECENTLY CELEBRATED THE LAUNCH OF ITS EXCITING NEW RESTAURANT AT BAXTER GATE, LOUGHBOROUGH. LOCATED IN A FORMER AUCTION HOUSE, IT CERTAINLY HAS LOTS TO OFFER AS WE FOUND OUT… RESTAURANT REVIEW - PIZZAEXPRESS, LOUGHBOROUGH

E

ach PizzaExpress restaurant is individually designed — often using well known places, people or historical events from the area as the basis. The building’s use as an auction house has inspired artwork with playful oil paintings of imaginary auction lots. The restaurant has a fresh and quirky feel with its eclectic mix of furniture and minty colour palette and some of the design features, such as the patterned tiled fl oor, are based on the auction house’s original architecture. The edgy look will certainly appeal to Loughborough’s student population, without alienating families and couples. Key University Campus views are among a series of photographs inside the restaurant that document well known and less seen parts of the town. The oil paintings by Leicester fi gurative artist Jane French, the photographs by Andrew French and the illustrations by Georgia Wilkinson are a lovely touch.

The service is warm, friendly and efficient and despite the queue diners were seated with relative ease. The food is delicious and prepared in full view in their trademark open kitchen. Manager, Gareth Jones, said, “We love our new restaurant and have a friendly and enthusiastic team who are looking forward to welcoming everyone over a delicious pizza.” The choice of toppings, bases and specials is vast; so whether you are gluten-free, vegetarian, a meat-lover or looking for a healthy superfood option there’s something to suit all palettes and dietary requirements. For younger pizza-lovers, the PizzaExpress’ Piccolo menu is full of tasty choices too including ‘Create Your Own’ pizza. So why not pop in and try it out for yourself. Courgette & halloumi kebabs with green tahini dressing A great vegetarian option for a barbecue or a simple summery lunch. Stir lemon zest, toasted, flaked almonds or chopped pistachios through a bowl of couscous to serve alongside, or just griddle or roast some red peppers.

ingredients

• 3 large or 4 smaller courgettes, chopped into large bite-sized pieces • 300g halloumi, cut into large cubes • 2 green chillies, deseeded & finely chopped • 4 tbsp sunflower or light olive oil

for the dressing • • • • • •

2 tbsp light tahini 2 tbsp yoghurt 1 garlic clove, crushed 2 tbsp olive oil juice of ½ a lemon handful of coriander leaves, finely chopped • handful of mint leaves, finely chopped • salt & black pepper

method

If you are using wooden or bamboo skewers rather than metal ones, soak them in cold water for 20 minutes to stop them burning when they cook. To make the dressing, stir the tahini with the yoghurt until you have a smooth paste. Whisk in the garlic, olive oil and lemon juice and add water, a little at a time, until the dressing has the consistency of pouring cream. Stir in the chopped herbs. Season to taste with salt, pepper and more lemon juice. Thread the courgettes and halloumi on to the skewers. Mix the chillies with 4 tablespoons of oil. Brush a little of this over the kebabs. Heat a griddle or non-stick frying pan (or use the barbecue). Fry the kebabs, brushing them with more chilli oil and turning them carefully every few minutes, until the courgettes and halloumi are golden brown. Serve with the tahini dressing alongside to drizzle over the kebabs.

There's nothing better than home cooking made from fresh organic ingredients.

he world of artisan spirits has exploded in the last few years and it doesn't show signs of slowing down... And we love it! The industry is really flourishing with new distilleries popping up all over the UK with each one developing their own unique, distinctive flavour profiles – from classic ‘London Dry Gins’ or the sweeter ‘Old Tom Gins’ and even resting gins in Wood Casks for months at a time.

Experimenting with flavours and botanicals is key in the modern gin world. We know in today's society people are beginning to buy more consciously; people are demanding better quality and want a real story about where the products they buy come from. Over the last year we've noticed a huge increase in the number of bride & grooms ordering bespoke spirits from us for their guests either as table favours or stocked behind the bar. Weddings are a time in most people's lives where the attention to detail cannot be missed and our ‘Countryside Cocktail’ has been a firm favourite in helping happy couples celebrate their big day. The Two Birds Countryside Gin Cocktail comes premade and served in a bottle so you just stick a straw in and that's it - no ice or glasses needed. The collaborative process is a positive alternative to the traditional method of resolving disputes over children and finances which often occur when separating. It gives you the opportunity to work together with your partner through these issues to benefit you and your family. The process is less formal, more cost effective and allows you to maintain control. Divorce and separation is never easy but it can be made easier and less stressful using this process.

MOTORS |

PEUGEOT ENTERED THE WORLD OF COMPACT CROSSOVERS WITH ITS 2008 JUST THREE YEARS AGO AND OFFERED A SENSIBLY-SIZED AND PRACTICAL SUV WITH SLIGHTLY RAISED PLATFORM, ELEVATED DRIVING POSITION AND AMPLE INTERIOR SPACE. THE 2008 HAS ALREADY FOUND MANY APPRECIATIVE OWNERS AND FRESH FROM THE UK LAUNCH OF THE LATEST MODEL, WE CAN REPORT THAT ALL WHICH WAS GOOD HAS JUST BECOME EVEN BETTER

AN UNDERSTATED DELIGHT

T

he new 2008 - available from July - brings a welcome refresh, notably to the front with an altogether more serious face. Black wheel arch extensions on the upper trim levels deliver an air of ruggedness and the new colours plus the smart sporty-themed GT-Line trim which has started to appear across the wider Peugeot range. The cabin is distinctively Peugeot with the smaller low-mounted steering wheel and main instruments set deeply into the dashboard. All but the lowest Access trim level have the excellent seven-inch touch screen with CarPlay® for integration with Apple’s iPhone. The Active level has much of the desirable equipment but Allure and GTLine bring in full dual-zone climate control, electrically folding mirrors, automatic lights and wipers plus rear parking sensors. Interior trim is also upgraded to part leather and there are numerous styling detail additions from front and rear scuff plates to more heavily tinted rear glass. The GT-Line also adds the attractive panoramic glass roof. Beyond mere styling, there are a number of areas in which the 2008 really stands out. First are the engines, with the award-winning PureTech 1.2 petrol plus the refined and economical 1.6 BlueHDi diesel, each available in three power outputs. The PureTech 130 is charismatic and punchy but the mid-level PureTech 110 is more than adequate and when mated to the smooth auto, makes for easy

editor@motorwriter.com

thebeaconmagazine.co.uk

93664_87_Motors.indd 83

progress. The top BlueHDi 120 diesel is powerful, relaxed and with slightly improved economy over the petrol units is our choice for anyone planning higher mileages. As one would expect, the 2008 is extremely practical. Despite the taller profile, the boot sill is low and the rear positively cavernous. Rear passengers are treated to decent leg room and the higher roof line offers the opportunity to wear a modest hat. The icing on the cake is Grip Control, standard on Allure and GTLine. Grip Contol is a feature designed to make the most of the car’s front-wheel-drive capability on tricky surfaces with settings for mud, snow and sand, each demanding different characteristics. We tried it off-road in mud and sand and apart from having a great deal of fun, found it really did adjust its power delivery to adapt to the varied conditions. While not a 4x4, it coped well and driving just the front wheels means better economy while on road. It is hard not to praise the 2008 for just its sheer common sense, practicality and supple ride but the fresh looks add further appeal. We’d like to have seen Active City Brake as standard (it is a cost option only) but otherwise this compact SUV is an understated delight. The New 2008 starts at £13,615. GT-Line from £18,815.

HOME-START CHARNWOOD NOT ONLY HELPS FAMILIES WITH YOUNG CHILDREN, IT ALSO HELPS THE VOLUNTEERS IN MANY, MANY WAYS TOO

WHY DO PEOPLE

VOLUNTEER? Sue was waiting for grandchildren

S

ue had resigned herself to the fact that her son did not want children, which meant that she would never be a grandparent, “I just accepted it – I adore children though and dreamed of having lots of grandchildren. But life doesn't always give you what you want.” She said. That changed when a Home-Start Charnwood leaflet dropped through Sue's door. She decided to sign up for the training course and before she knew it she was busy supporting families with young children. "The support that Home-Start offers its volunteers after the training course is brilliant," says Sue, "and the ongoing training means that there is always something new to learn. It also helps in my personal life. I lost confidence after I had to give up work because of ill health and although I now have a certain amount of control on my condition, without Home-Start I would never have got my confidence back." Sue offers practical and emotional support to her families and really enjoys the time that she spends on home visits. She says: "I sometimes get mothers with low self-esteem and depression who don't know how to play with their children, so I take on a grandmother's role. I read them stories, run around the garden and play mad games with them. I care about them the same way I would have done my own grandchildren." Sue says that the most touching moments with her 'grandchildren' are when they are waiting impatiently for her to arrive and they run up to her and throw their arms around her neck. If you have parenting experience and could spare 2-3 hours a week please call us on 01509 239786. Our next training course starts in September. For more info visit home-start.org.uk

“IT GOT A WHOLE LOT ”

T

BIGGER

he MME Charnwood Forest Cycle Ride, organised by local charity Alex’s Wish, reported its busiest year ever with over 250 cyclists recently taking to the 10, 20 or 50 mile routes.

“The weather was just gorgeous,” says Emma Hallam, founder of Alex’s Wish a local Rothley based charity who raise money to fund clinical trials into finding treatments and, ultimately, a cure for Duchenne Muscular Dystrophy; a life limiting condition which affects boys across the UK including Emma’s son Alex, after whom the charity is named. “That certainly helped draw a few more cyclists out on the day. We are still receiving sponsorship money but to date over £10,000 has been raised making this our most successful Charnwood Forest Cycle Ride to date – both in terms of number of riders and the amount raised.” Riders were equally happy with the event. Elizabeth Raouf said, “We love this event. Yet again it was beautifully organised and a fabulous ride. All of my colleagues enjoyed it and my daughter, who has just turned 14, joined us too. I hope to make the team bigger every year. Great news about the amount raised… well done!" Dave Haywood cycled the 50 mile route which was new for 2016 and said, "Thank you for today. Really enjoyed the 50 mile bike ride round beautiful Charnwood. Can't tell you how brilliantly the course was laid out. I didn't know the area at all but found the arrows and directions were brilliant. Would definitely like to do it again next year. Thank you again." Lisa Bacon of SHB Solicitors who adopted Alex’s Wish as their Charity of the Year said, “This is our first time as a company supporting this event and we thoroughly enjoyed it. We also hope to field a larger team next year but we had cyclists in both the 10 and 50 mile routes. Alex’s Wish is a fabulous charity to support and I’m really looking forward to working closely with them throughout this year. Watch this space!”

Making strides

C

harity Link, which, in 2016, is marking 140 years of helping local people in poverty, is looking for challengers to take on its first ever ‘Leicestershire 3 Peaks Power Walk’ which will take place on Sunday 25th September 2016. The challenge will see individuals and teams taking on a 15 mile course starting and finishing at Bradgate Park. The route includes the peaks of Old John Tower, Beacon Hill and Leicestershire’s highest peak, Bardon Hill, which, at 912ft, is just 88ft short of a mountain. Walking through some of the county’s most beautiful (and physically challenging!) scenery, the goal is to finish the route within six hours. Charity Link supports people of all ages and backgrounds who find themselves in poverty, hardship or crisis including people affected by chronic illness, disabled people and the victims of domestic violence. Charity Link makes a tangible difference by providing essential items such as beds, clothing and even food to help make people’s lives better.

“The Oktoberfest party of the Year!”

Susan McEniff, Director of Charity Link, says: “It would be brilliant to have the support of the local community in this, the charity’s 140th year. The need for our services remains great. Last year we supported 8,209 people, 33% of whom were deprived children and young people, but we can only continue our vital work if people get behind events such as this. We hope our Leicestershire 3 Peaks Power Walk will inspire people to get out and undertake a challenge in some amazing local countryside whilst really making a difference.” There is a £15 registration fee to enter with a £100 fundraising target which, due to the unique way in which Charity Link works (every £10 donated to the charity can raise £50 from charitable trusts that are available to help those in need), means that every walker raising their fundraising target could help the charity to provide a fridge and cooker for a local family in desperate need or beds for three children currently sleeping on the floor. Funds can be raised through sponsorship or other activity such as raffle or cake sales.
