BUT DOES IT REALLY WORK? “The answer has to be, that like any other form of fitness, you get out what you put in when it comes to pure fitness gains. Yet beyond the physical gains of improving strength and stamina, dancing has many other benefits that perhaps you won’t find in other forms of exercise:” There is the sheer pleasure of moving to music. We see it with very young children - switch on the music and they simply can’t help but move to the rhythm. As adults we tend to become shy and self-conscious, yet put us in a dance class environment and the inhibitions melt away and joy takes over with all the emotional wellbeing that comes with it. and Christmas Jumper days in the office. Luckily you no longer have to scour your parents' wardrobes and second-hand clothes shops looking for the most hideous festive tops you can find. The Christmas jumper phenomenon ceased to be about looking as dreadful as possible, it has become something that esteemed fashion designers and High Street shoppers now totally buy into. But today it isn't enough just to buy any old Christmas jumper. To look fashionable in one, it needs to be for the right reasons. Why not try giving it some edge and wear one from a slightly cooler brand like Ted Baker or Topshop? Marks and Spencer’s doesn’t have the same credibility somehow. I like to wear mine oversized (more room for mince pies!) with skinny jeans and knee high boots for a cool Christmas look without the chill. If making a statement isn’t your thing then why not opt for just a bit of sparkle? Both Reiss and Whistles have done some beautiful pieces of knitwear with a subtle sparkle to them. Again team with skinnies and some nice boots for a more understated and refined nod to the Christmas jumper. It's enough to make you buy a new jumper to celebrate…

Following her initial captivation of the ancient art of blacksmithing, Cathy, who studied 3-D Art at Loughborough College, fell in love with jewellery making and has been devoted to creating beautiful bespoke pieces ever since. The exquisitely unique piece (pictured below) is one of Cathy's latest creations. The fire opal has been hand carved and signed by the artist. I
remember someone once saying to me that space was a luxury and I thought ‘what a strange thing to say or even think’, space is just space, fill it or do whatever with it. But now, maybe 30 years after this person’s comment, I totally get it and understand the huge importance of the
sentiment. I’m not sure if the person who made this comment was also talking about space in your mind, but I like to think he was. Imagine a life with space in your mind to think clearly, space in your home to live easily and space in your day to day life to take stock and enjoy. It’s funny to imagine that interior design has anything to do with the mind, but the more you understand how your day to day living affects your happiness, the more you understand the connection. Space, I don’t think it is about having loads of it, big rooms, big gardens, big houses, I think it is about creating room to live simply and comfortably in the space you have available and filling the space in your mind with good thoughts. Big spaces can be great of course; room for huge sofas, beds, family tables and oodles of storage, but the most important thing is creating spaces that work. I think open plan living is a wonderful way to create space in your home and to make your life more enjoyable; seems a big ask of a space but it really does do this for you. The perfect scenario for me is - kitchen at one of end of the room, all the busy goings on, the beautiful aromas and the comforting background clatter of someone close to you pottering about. Then the table, a small round one with a selection of odd chairs or a huge scrubbed pine old one with a sense of history, near the kitchen, near the window and near your current selection of books and reading material. It maybe kids sitting up at the table doing homework, or it may be friends popping in for a chat, or best of all a simple family dinner where you all chat about your day. This simple way of living in one space allows you to stay together while still doing your own thing. I don’t know if it’s just me but I find it much easier to do chores if someone else is around, I have no idea why but it just seems more enjoyable, they don’t even have to talk to me, just being there is enough. Then there is the comfy area, squashy sofas, and an open fire or wood burner, a basket of logs and table for your cup of tea. This formula for downstairs living is so important for keeping people connected, keeping life fun, stimulating and conversation flowing when required. I don’t think open living should extend to other rooms in the home necessarily, in fact quite the opposite, everyone needs their solitude and privacy too, it’s absolutely just as important. Again it goes back to space, small private comforting,

welcoming spaces are just as important, they allow you room to make the other space required, the one in your mind. For more information and to view deVOL's kitchen ranges pay them a visit at Cotes Mill, Nottingham Rd, Loughborough, LE12 5TL or go to www.devolkitchens.co.uk

deVOL - Kitchens & Interiors Beautiful Kitchens - Natural Stone Flooring – Interiors – Inspiration After a lovely long, warm summer, we are all quite happy to welcome autumn with a smile. Wood burners fill our showrooms here at Cotes Mill with that lovely smell that makes you want to curl up and read a book or drink some red wine. I always remember Harvest Festival as a child, I loved making up a box with fruits and vegetables, covering it with cling film and taking it to school to sell at the Harvest Fete. It was my absolute favourite time of the year. The grounds here at Cotes Mill are full of wild food, enormous mushrooms, damsons and bushes full of rose hips. We really like the idea of making jams and sloe gin to sell here at the mill, maybe we will get round to it next year. We have found another use for the hay driers that we turned into Christmas trees last year; we have dried grass on them, it works and they look so great, little mini haystacks dotted around the meadow at the front of the mill, looking like sculptures or yetis! At this time of year lots of people turn their attention to their homes, holidays are over, school is in full flow, so it seems the perfect time to make your homes pretty again. It’s nice to change things around a bit when the nights draw in, making life feel cosier and
| 50 |
warmer. Clear your summer pots of the geraniums and plant up some lovely vintage Moroccan pots with evergreen bushy shrubs or spindly olive trees, keep them close to your porch for protection and a fresh welcome for visitors. Make a wreath with twiggy sticks covered in lichen and berries and you have winter covered. Your next autumn treat is to pop into Cotes Mill and wander around the showrooms, find inspiration for a new kitchen next year or pick up a few interesting bits and bobs for your home. Our showrooms are always changing, antlers hanging on the walls get snapped up quickly and our big tables are always on customers wish lists. So don’t miss out on something really special to transform your home or garden at this exciting time of year! We really look forward to welcoming you into our world of beautiful interiors, from natural stone flooring and handmade kitchens to an emporium of exciting and unusual pieces for your home. The Cotes Mill showrooms are open Monday to Friday from 8.30am – 5pm and Saturdays from 10am – 5pm. (For consultations on Saturdays we generally recommend booking an appointment).

10 US EFU L TH INGS TO KNOW ABOUT
Wasps
Although the invasion of a wasps nest into your personal space can be a scary nuisance, some of their innate behaviours are quite interesting in terms of the way nests are built and the hierarchy of a colony. Here are 10 really useful things to know about them:
DID YOU KNOW? 1.
The venom in wasps contains a pheromone that causes other wasps to become more aggressive. Try not to swat one near its nest or other wasps.
2.
The sting from a wasp should wear off within 24 hours but ordinary sting can be treated with deodorant containing aluminium.
3.
A male wasp is called a Drone. The job of the Drone is to mate with the Queen. After they have fulfilled this mission, they die shortly afterwards.
4.
Wasps do not swarm.
5.
Wasps feed their young meat e.g. insect larvae.
6.
There are 2 types of wasp in the UK: solitary, and

social; and the social types cluster together in nests of up to 10,000 in size. 7.
Wasps build their nests from chewed tree wood and create paper cells similar to the combs that bees make with wax.
8.
They often choose sunny spots when building nests but they inhabit a variety of places and are most

commonly found under eaves of houses, in attics, walls, roof spaces, trees, hedges and underground. 9.
Take care around wasps and their nests as their venom contains a pheromone that causes other wasps to become more aggressive so it is not advisable to swat one near its nests or other wasps.
10.
In rare cases, a wasp sting can cause anaphylactic shock which can be fatal; however an ordinary sting, can be treated with: ammonia, deodorant that contains aluminum, alcohol or cold poultices followed by antihistamine ointment.
If you do come across a nest, it should be reported for removal immediately; especially in a public place, in the home, or in your business premises. Direct Pest / Direct Climate, 21 Mowby Close, Whestone, Leicester, LE8 6XA. Visit www.directclimate.co.uk or call 0116 3320046 for more information.

"What we hope to achieve in time is to deliver fresh food to an award winning standard but at an affordable price, we want to make excellent food available to suit all budgets, not just those that can stretch to Michelin Star restaurants. We want to show people that Italian food is more than just pasta and pizza and to push the boundaries of what they know and what they have tried" Nick McNerney. Roald Dahl’s work must feature highly in the canon of great children’s literature; how hard was it to get the rights to an all new production of The Witches? It was a flat no to begin with, but as I’d worked on a production of James and The Giant Peach and we’re working with David Wood, who has adapted a lot of work for young people, I think that opened the door for us. I had to plead and beg and then when they said yes I pleaded and begged a bit more for the rights to tour it, which we will do after the run at Curve.

because the themes are universal. They transcend age really, as Dahl was writing for both adults and children. It is admittedly quite a dark piece, but at its heart is the message that as long as we have love then nothing else matters. It’s a beautiful moral and a beautiful tale to be telling at this time year, when families and many different people who don’t normally come to our theatre do come and see us. For some this will be there very first theatre experience which makes it all the more exciting. What can you tell us about the world you’re creating in The Witches Well, as the story changes location a lot; we’re on a boat, we’re in a ballroom, there’s a scene on a sea front in Bournemouth and there’s even a scene in Norway, so to make all of that work we’ve created a really wacky, disjointed environment where anything can happen. We’ve also been thinking about who these witches are and mashed up timescales a bit. When the witches are in their everyday life, trying to hide the fact that they’re witches, they’re dressed like American housewives, very prim and proper suburban women. But when they reveal themselves as witches we were inspired by the likes of Vivienne Westwood; a bit punky and lots of fun! The music reflects that too with Dougal Vine working on a sort of Ska/Madness sound for the mad, disjointed world we’ve created.
