FROM THE DESK OF JOSH RYLATT, DIRECTOR OF TRANSFORMATION FIT
HEALTH, FITNESS & WELLBEING |
MYTH 4: “USE HIGH REPS AND LOW WEIGHT FOR FAT LOSS” Again, a myth which doesn’t really make much sense. Surely high reps and heavy weight would bring about greater calorie burning? In my opinion, weight training over cardio every day of the week. Strength/endurance weight training is absolutely paramount when trying to achieve a better body, the reasons being: •
rate, this decides how many calories your body burns when resting, if you want to burn more calories when sleeping, choose weights. •
High Intensity weight training will burn more calories per hour then jogging/walking on a treadmill.

People believe spending hours jogging on a treadmill, or pedalling on a bike is the fastest, most effective way to lose fat and ‘tone up’. Whilst these techniques can help, they have many downfalls and there are more efficient options. The side-effects of long cardio sessions may be: •

Imagine your life pain-free, without pills, and being able to do the things you love. If you suffer from back or shoulder pain, you may not realise how much your body compensates to avoid further pain. Chronic pain can have many causes, including stress, and can prevent you from getting the most out of life. Body Logiq specialise in combining multiple therapies, as there is rarely a single fix when it comes to pain. We will check your posture, review your lifestyle, find the root cause of your problem and provide a tailored combination of therapies to suit you.

xercise is for life; it shouldn’t just be an occasional habit. Whether you have a disability or not, regular exercise will help you with your mobility, coordination, flexibility, strength and balance.

deVOL Kitchens We are very pleased to introduce a beautiful new kitchen range to our Cotes Mill showroom.
We had a great time at Clerkenwell Design Week discovering brilliant design talent and getting your amazing feedback on our brand new Sebastian Cox Kitchen. Here’s one of the first pictures of the stunning new range. The elegant glass fronted cabinet uses drawn glass framed by slender beech panels. The beautiful woven beech detailing is inspired by our collaborator Sebastian Cox’s signature style. This kitchen is a mix of everything that both deVOL and Sebastian are passionate about. The new range, easily described as urban rustic, focuses on utilising sustainable British timbers. It’s a culmination of good taste, modern innovation, traditional techniques and true inspiration. We have always encouraged our clients to ask: ‘Where is it made?’ and then check for
themselves. It’s important to know what you are buying and who you are supporting. Sebastian shares our love for British made products, infact this ethos is at the very heart of Sebastian’s company which has made the manufacturing process a true pleasure. We welcome you to come along and see the stunning new kitchen for yourself at our Cotes Mill showroom. Also home to our three other beautiful kitchen ranges and sister flooring company, our breathtaking showroom is quickly blossoming into a summer paradise filled with beautiful birds and wild flowers. With the brand new range and a fresh delivery of vintage gifts and accessories, there’s never been a better time to come and explore our lovely home-from-home.

WHAT DOES OLED MEAN The latest innovation in TV screens is Organic Light Emitting Diode (OLED) technology, which promises better picture quality than LED displays. Unlike any other LCD TV; which requires a back light; OLED works in a different way, by switching on and off each and every micro pixel on its screen. Each OLED pixel contains red, green, blue and white elements, giving it a far better colour range to create a picture that provides natural, life-like colour and the deepest black levels. The fast refresh rate of OLED gives a super-fast picture that moves 1,000-times faster than

Daniel Craig is married to actress Rachel Weisz, renowned for her role in The Mummy and The Mummy Returns. They both have a child from a previous relationship and tied the knot in June 2011 at a private New York ceremony. The couple prefer to keep a low profile and are rumoured to reside in a penthouse in Manhattan, NYC. A few years ago, The Independent reported that Daniel Craig is the highest paid Bond with a multi-million pound Contract. He spends time preparing for the role by employing the services of a personal trainer (or ‘bond’ builder). The trainer is a former Royal Marine and it would appear that the secret behind the six-pack is to train like an athlete. Two years in planning, the latest Spectre movie involves extra incredible actors which Craig adds “Somehow we continue to attract more amazing people (I don’t know how we do it) but they seem to want to get involved with the madness”. SPECTRE is released on 6th November 2015.

Hi my name is Karen and I’m a craſt addict! I have loved arts and craſts for as long as I can remember – even back before I started school. However it was around 15 years ago when I was living in a remote part of Canada that I really had time to explore this side of my creativity (aſter all there is only so much you can do when it is winter for most of the year…) I started off by making various flower hair bands and fascinators for myself and friends and this lead to people asking if I could make them all sorts of other items, such as knitted wire bracelets and beaded necklaces. I had so much fun, that when I returned to a more normal life living back in Leicestershire, I carried on craſting by surrounding myself with piles of materials and then taking inspiration from everyday things I see around me to create jewelry in all sorts of different mediums. Amongst my favorite recent creations are polymer clay broaches styled on sweets & biscuits and handbags created from the most unlikely objects. It was around then that I decided to call my craſts Thomasena’s Treasures in memory of my late Auntie Thomasena (Lena) who had helped inspire my creativity when I was very young. Of course, the problem with enjoying it so much is I have ended up with quite a lot of pieces and am starting to run out of room! To try and free up some space (so I can make even more things!), I am going to be hosting a free admission Craſt Fair on Sunday 15th November 2015 between 11am and 3pm at The Fuller Rooms, The Old School, Grantham Road, Bottesford, NG13 0DF, which is north of Melton Mowbray. Most of my pieces are modestly priced (the majority are less than £20) and I am more than happy to consider commissions if you are looking for something special and unique. I would be delighted to talk to you on the day or you can contact me anytime at my email address of thomasenastreasure@mail.com

EDIT: Buy or borrow a computer, learn the software and edit your scenes together, shot by shot. Keep it tight and simple until your film is fun, snappy, or dramatic. THEN, refocus the story and tell it the best way you can using the footage you captured, which may mean changing the original intention of the script.
REPEAT, REPEAT, REPEAT... You will learn an enormous amount during your first movie. So don't hang around, start on the next and you’ll soon feel more confident and ready to take chances. Your work will become more original and you'll begin to find your voice as a filmmaker.
OTHER THINGS TO DO: Find other filmmakers and ask to help them out. In turn, they'll help you and you'll form friendships and partnerships. Study media at college or university, but it's what you do that really counts in progressing your career. Writing is the most crucial skill if you want to be a filmmaker. So go write your movie! urely by now the cat is finally out of the bag? After countless rave reviews, what has to be Leicester's best kept secret is now taking it's rightful position as the county's premier go to place for independent cinema, art & digital culture and also food! Since it's 2009 Phoenix Square reincarnation within the city’s Cultural Quarter, the purpose-built Phoenix Arts Centre has continued to be a creative innovator, supporting and nurturing emerging artists. Unbelievably, it gets better, as a local charity, all profits made go back into developing further programmes, thus enabling increased interaction with the local community. Upon arriving at the contemporary and open-planned arts centre you are immediately greeted with a bright, creative, warm & friendly atmosphere in which you feel everybody has a passion & pride in what they do, as a consequence you can't help but feel welcomed and inspired.

By booking ahead we were fortunate enough to be able to experience the Film & Dine deal which offers exceptional value at just £14.75 per person. We allowed ourselves just over an hour before the film to enjoy our food in the modern spacious surroundings of the cafe bar. The deal enabled us to combine the film of our choice (Spooks: The Greater Good) with a meal from the regular menu or the daily special board, from which I selected Blackened Pan Fried Salmon on Sweet Potato Wedges, whilst my fiancé opted for a Thai Prawn Curry, and neither of us were left disappointed.
It was of a high standard, taste & flavour, this alongside a well stocked and varied bar which housed a selection of local ales aided the relaxed ambiance in which we enjoyed our dinner. After we had finished our meal we were asked if we would like to take our drinks into the cinema with us, which we dually obliged and we were then guided towards Screen 1 which was clean, neat & modern, albeit slightly more intimate than your run of the mill commercial cinema. Being at an arts based loctaion you have the feeling of appreciation of all things creative which adds to the sophistication about the place. When the film had finished we left the phoenix to smiles & thank you's after having the most perfect of evenings, with wonderful food, fantastic value, in great surroundings with the bonus of added arts & culture. It was on the short walk to the car it was agreed that there will be a sequel or part two, and we will return! To find out more visit phoenix.org.uk

DISEASES BLACK SPOT This is a common bug-bear to gardeners, especially those who like roses. In order to reduce infection, make sure that you remove all leaves from the ground in the autumn and mulch with well-rotted manure in February to reduce rain splash. A systemic fungicide will also stop the problem, but apply it as soon as leaves start to emerge, and every 14 days for as long as you can bear. It is worth mentioning that every year we have some customers arrive with Photinia ‘Red Robin’ leaves which they think has black spot. It is in actual fact a common problem with Photinia that appears if the plant is under stress. MILDEW There are a couple of different types of mildew, powdery and downy. They both look like white-mould growth on leaves, and are unfortunately unsightly. Again, these can be treated with a systemic fungicide. RUST This is one of the most common ailments that customers ask us about here at the nursery, and can be broadly

incidental to the real killer that happens beneath the surface of the soil. The young grubs of vine weevil munch through the roots of our favourite plant, which then die, with no explanation until we try to dig them up and find that there is little or no root structure left. Treat with specialist Vine weevil killers which are used as drenches over the plant and soil, or have a look online for nematode specialists. There are hundreds more pests in the garden, lots of which are plant specific, e.g. carrot whitefly and cabbage white butterflies. HOME & GARDEN |
FOR SOME OF US THE LUXURY OF A BIG GARDEN ISN’T ALWAYS POSSIBLE, BUT WHY SHOULD BIGGER BE BETTER? ONE OF THE GREATEST ADVANTAGES OF A SMALLER GARDEN, IS IN A SMALL AREA YOU CAN HAVE EVERYTHING YOU WANT, YOUR OWN LITTLE OASIS, AND IT COSTS LESS AND IS EASIER TO MAINTAIN - EXPLAINS GARDENING EXPERT, MICHAEL WHEAT
SIZE ISN'T
everything IN THE GARD E N
5 TOP TIPS TO GETTING THE MOST FROM A SMALL GARDEN: 1.
Don’t try and cram too much in. Perhaps don’t have a lawn, you may need to sacrifice something to give your space the right balance.
2.
Make sure you put something in it! Small gardens tend to be boxes surrounded by fences, if you don’t plant in front of them your eye will be drawn unto the fence.
3.
Seating areas are key, make sure your seating area is near the house, easy access to the kitchen and you are looking out at the garden rather than looking at the back of your house. Decking is very versatile and adds a different texture to small gardens.
4.
Shady areas can be planted, but are good places for a water feature. In difficult areas, consider an artificial lawn which can look great in a small garden.
5.
Raised beds can add structure to small gardens. Sleepers do a great job of making raised borders, plant with colourful shrubs for all year round colour.
So the next time you get a bit envious of the large gardens, remember that small spaces can be just as inviting! Michael Wheat Pond & Garden Design, 4 Gladstone Street, Fleckney, Leicester, LE8 8AG T: 0116 240 3735 I www.michaelwheat.co.uk

Bright futures lie ahead as Loughborough’s independent schools unite Pupils and staff at Our Lady’s Convent School (OLCS) in Loughborough are gearing up for an exciting start to the academic year as they prepare to join the Loughborough Endowed Schools Foundation. OLCS educates boys from age 3-11 and girls from 3-18. From 1st September, it will become the fourth school in the Foundation alongside Loughborough Grammar School, Loughborough High School and Fairfield Preparatory School. All four schools have a long history of providing high quality independent education. They are situated on adjacent streets in the town and pupils will share a wide range of facilities and curricular and extra-curricular activities in addition to an extensive transport network which enables children to travel to the schools from across the East Midlands.
A major upgrade of the IT network and computer facilities at OLCS took place this summer with further investment in facilities planned.
It’s an incredibly exciting time for our School and for the Foundation. By joining the Endowed Schools family we will maintain our holistic approach to education and all that makes us distinctive, particularly our Christian ethos. At the same time we will benefit from the synergy created by uniting four successful schools, each with different strengths. We all have new opportunities to look forward to. Patricia Hawley, Headteacher at OLCS Families who are considering an independent education for their children are invited to contact OLCS on 01509 263901 to arrange an appointment, or to attend the Loughborough Endowed Schools Open Day on Saturday 3rd October. There will be an opportunity to meet staff and pupils, take a guided tour of the beautiful campus and specialist facilities, and find out more about the Schools’ future plans.
