A LETTER FROM THE PRESIDENT David Mordy, 2017 Briar Club President

As 2014 drew to a close with oil prices in a nosedive and the Briar Club’s construction looming, one of the board members properly expressed the sentiment, “winter is coming.” As we begin 2017, the long night has now passed and the Briar Club’s transformation has been more than just a physical change. New traditions are being set. The board, committees and members are providing ideas and input that will shape these traditions. In addition, we have a management team that is willing to challenge the status quo and improve operations and member services wherever possible. Our vision for the Briar Club is to create a club where every member can boast about belonging to a club like no other in the country. We are on our way to becoming that club. In recent years we have added creative new experiences for members, including tennis trips to major events, rooftop fireworks viewing and our very first presentation ball. My favorite event of 2016 was listening to Dr Brené Brown as we kicked off the Scholarship Fund. The club has also added significant new amities. I was amazed to learn our kitchen crew is willing to fire up the ovens at 3:30 am in order to provide catered food to members during major holidays. From car detailing to the ability to pre-order breakfast on your way to the fitness center, new services keep arriving.

Our committees are discussing new ideas ranging from water polo to vineyard excursions to cooking camps. In June, the Club will hold a mixer for Briar Club youth to network with members and discuss career opportunities. There are a host of ideas we have tried in the past, but did not get the response needed to continue. However, in addition to having new facilities and new management, over 20% of the Briar Club’s membership has joined within the last 3 years. Some ideas now have a renewed shot at success. My encouragement for members is to enjoy the journey and to experience new things. We all tend to have patterns where we are at the club for same times during the week. If you haven’t yet, join the Wednesday night happy hour crowd, play poker in the End Zone or try a fitness challenge. This is our chance to be more than a place for Sunday brunch and member support helps us gain traction on new ideas. Excitement and optimism are also the keys to our financial success. Our only true advertising is our members. Sharing your passion for the Club with potential members is worth more than anything the Board, Committees, and Management can do. With a great sense of optimism, I am very much looking forward to 2017 at the Briar Club.

YEAR IN REVIEW, A FAREWELL LETTER Will Garwood, Ex-Officio As my tenure as President draws to a close, I want to thank all of you for the honor and privilege of serving The Briar Club. Looking ahead, David Mordy has been elected by the Board to serve as President in 2017. David has been a valuable member of the Board for the past three years, served as Chair of the Membership Committee in 2015 and Treasurer and Chair of the Finance Committee during this past year. I would also like to congratulate and welcome our newly elected Board Members, Brenda Bowman, Orion Campbell and Rick Walton. I look forward to working with David and all the Board in the coming year in my new role as Ex Officio member.

to the Briar Club through your service over the past 3 and 4 years. Finally, on behalf of the entire Board I want to say thank you to our great young General Manager, Daniel Moreno. Daniel took the helm at the beginning of 2016, rolled up his sleeves and went to work – and he has not stopped. Daniel was a wonderful partner to the Board and his positive energy and enthusiasm reverberates throughout our Club family of members and employees. The journey which began with the Master Plan has taken us further and challenged us in ways not fully foreseen. Such is the case with almost all great endeavors, they are costly in time and treasure but ultimately well worth the effort. What a wonderful place we are blessed to have and to enjoy tucked away between Timmons Lane and Saint Street, right in the heart of one of the world’s great cities. As we look into the future, I believe the sky is the limit for the Briar Club.

I want to thank our 2016 Board for their service and the commitment of their considerable talents and, that most precious of all commodities, time, on behalf of the Club. I enjoyed our time together and the opportunity to work with all of you. I am proud to say that the 2016 Board more than rose to the challenge and showed a real solidarity of purpose. Strong minded individuals, independent thinkers, but all passionate about the Briar Club. Shannon, Rob and Rob, you will be My best wishes to all of you for a Happy New Year in 2017. See you missed next year. Each of you has made a truly significant contribution around the Club.

AQUATICS Wanted: Swim Team Coaches

POOL TEMPERATURE POLICY

At each change of seasons (to the extent that we have “seasons” in Houston), the topic of pool temperatures resurfaces at the Club. There are recognized standards for water temperatures for different activities. FINA, or the Fédération Internationale de Natation, the international governing body for swimming sports, dictates the precise temperature for competitive swimming and other water sports. In addition to FINA, the American Red Cross has recommendations for pool temperature that can be used as a guide for fitness and recreational swimming, and for water therapy. In setting temperature goals for each of the Club’s pools the Swim Committee is guided by these standards and has taken several factors into consideration. These include different age/ skill levels of usage groups, ideal temperature ranges for different types of aquatic activities, pool locations, and numbers of participants. Each type of activity has a different temperature range that is considered appropriate for that group. With the completion of the Adult Lap Pool, the club has two lap pools for the members to choose from. The FINA standard for such swimming is a range between 77 and 82 degrees F. The Swim Committee decided that the Club should have one pool be a warmer and one pool a cooler option. The temperature goal of 82 degrees for the Competition Lap Pool was chosen so that it could accommodate those lap swimmers who prefer warmer water and would also accommodate our Barracuda and USA Swimming team practices and swimming lessons. The Adult Lap Pool goal of 79 degrees was chosen so that adults who swim at a more strenuous pace can swim their workouts without being overheated. The pool heaters at the club operate with a 1 degree variance so the actual water temperature in the pools during cooler months can vary by + or – 1 degree F. Summer temperatures and the extreme variability of Houston weather make consistency a challenge, but the Club attempts to maintain comfortable temperatures and keep maintenance interruptions to a minimum to ensure that pool temperatures are as stable as possible. Pool temperatures are taken twice daily and are posted in order to enable members to choose cooler or warmer water. Please join your fellow club members in enjoying the two lap pools as part of your exercise regimen throughout the year.
