A LETTER FROM THE PRESIDENT David Mordy, 2017 Briar Club President Years ago I sometimes heard from former Briar Club members that they dropped the club because their children reached their teenage years and no longer wanted to hang out at the club. At that time the club was really strong in meeting member expectations at certain stages of life, but was falling short at other stages. One of the things that excites me most is how we have been filling in the gaps and making the club more exciting for all ages. Last summer the first teenage pool party brought out more teens than I have ever seen at the club at one time. On June 22nd of this year we will hold a career mixer for 17-23 year old members to mingle with members capable of hiring (either full-time or for internships). Both our Youth Director, Gina DePamphilis, and our Youth Committee are working hard at continuing to expand offerings to make the club valuable to a greater age range.

A second transformation that excites me is watching members strengthen the overall community and consider the club more than just a place for dining or workouts. The last change falling into place is certainly a welcome one. When we completed the 2017 budget last September, it was appropriate to refer to our financial position as “cash constrained”. Since then, Amanda Hough, our Catering and Events Director and Daniel Moreno, our General Manager, have been hard at work boosting our banquet business and driving revenue well ahead of our projections. In addition, new memberships have just started to take off with the arrival of spring. In the last two weeks alone we have had 11 new members join the club. While it is still a bit early to change financial position moniker, banquets and membership are the keys to improving our footing and we are certainly headed in the right direction.

I’ll close with a recommendation and a thank you. For the last seven years Nicole and I have had a weekly date night in the lounge, made possible by the Kid’s Club. I would highly recommend that any members with young children enjoy one peaceful meal a week. The combination of great lounge food and getting to know other members while dining is unbeatable. The quality of staff at the Kid’s Club meant that our daughter always looked forward to spending time there. So, I’ll end with a shout out to the long-term Kid’s Club employees Dinora Romero and Sharron Duncan. You all truly help make the Briar Club a special place. Looking forward to seeing everyone around the pool!

A MESSAGE FROM THE GENERAL MANAGER Daniel Moreno, Briar Club General Manager What an amazing start to the 2017 season. The Club’s financial position continues to trend in a positive direction and the club is busier than ever. January and February had more transactions in 2017 than any other January and February over the past five years. The Club is rocking and I

including a national search for a Food and Beverage Director and a national search for a Fitness Director. These two roles will play a huge part with the continuing success of our Club. I would like to especially thank Samantha Van Veen during this transitional time as she has gone above the call of duty and stepped up majorly in leading our food and beverage department among

Benson. Our first Sunday night cookout this year was attended by over 350 members. I know many of you have noticed the temporary tents around the pool in order to provide more shade for the summer. Take advantage of these spots! I really enjoyed visiting with many members during our first “Coffee with the GM” event. Many wonderful questions were asked and

hope you are all enjoying our new facilities. We are continuously working behind the scenes to build the finest club in the nation. We will set new standards while providing a member experience like no other as we continue to grow. There are many exciting things happening around the Club

other tasks. This year promises to be a wonderful one, including many new member events such as Ladies Night Out, Scotch and Cigars, Chef Michael’s Cooking Class and in the fall we will be introducing Friday Family Nights. We had great fun at The Briar Club’s first trivia night led by our Membership Director, Linda

I look forward to our next one very soon. Thank you all for your continued support and please let me know if I may ever be of assistance.

DEAR DR. TENNIS DDT: My opponent reached over the net to hit the ball before it crossed onto their side of the net. Is that allowed? Who should make the call?

Mixed Doubles Club Championship Finalists Scott Grace and Angela Bowers

A: You must make contact with the ball on your side of the net only. Your opponent would lose this point. The one exception to this rule is if your opponents shot bounces close to the net with enough backspin to go back over the net to hit the ball. Nothing can touch the net though, this call should be made by the person committing the infraction. You can ask if they went over the net. but it’s their call.

AQUATICS SAFETY AROUND THE POOL

SUNSCREEN TIPS 1. Choose a sunscreen that has an SPF of 30 or higher, is water resistant, and provides broad-spectrum coverage, which means it protects you from UVA and UVB rays. 2. Apply sunscreen generously before going outdoors. It takes approximately 15 minutes for your skin to absorb the sunscreen and protect you. Do not apply sunscreen and

Most adults need at least one ounce of sunscreen, about the amount you can hold in your palm, to fully cover all exposed areas of your body. Rub the sunscreen thoroughly into your skin.

Infants and Toddlers must wear diapers secured by waterproof pants or swim diapers in all club pools. Swim diapers should be checked frequently (every 30-60 minutes) and replaced when soiled. FITNESS 10 BENEFITS OF GROUP FITNESS CLASSES Group exercise classes have been a mainstay of the gym environment since the leotard and spandex

to not only show proper form, but to also make sure that everyone in the class is executing each

8. NEW TRICKS The benefits of working with a certified personal

wearing Aerobics craze of the ‘80’s. According to recent research, however, more and more men are getting into what used to be a female dominated activity. If you haven’t experienced the thrill of successfully making it through a group class, it’s about time you did. Here are 10 reasons why group exercise deserves to be a part of your fitness program:

exercise the right way.

fitness trainer cannot be overstated. Personal training is a great option, but many people simply can’t afford it. Group fitness classes offer a cost effective way to benefit from the expertise of a certified trainer. You will learn new exercises, techniques and form through the process of going through the workout that the instructor has put together.

1. MOTIVATION It’s inspiring and motivating to be surrounded by dedicated, like-minded individuals. It doesn’t get much more empowering than a class with an encouraging instructor and supportive people all working hard together. 2. STRUCTURE Group fitness is a great way to get a workout in without having to think or plan. Each class is structured with a warm-up, a balanced workout and a cool-down. The warm-up is designed to help you properly raise your heart rate while loosening your joints and muscles before jumping into strenuous activity. 3. CHALLENGING The number one reason that people who regularly train at a gym don’t get the results they want is that they don’t challenge themselves enough. In other words, their workouts are too easy. You won’t get that in a group exercise class. So long as you choose the right class for your level, you will be challenged to work harder. 4. PROPER FORM A lot of gym goers develop sloppy exercise form. Yet, when you’re in a group fitness class there’s nowhere to hide. It’s the fitness instructor’s job

16

5. VARIETY Cardio kickboxing, boot camp, spin, Pilates…the list goes on. There are several types of group classes offered by gyms and athletic clubs. Having a variety of classes (47 at The BC) in your weekly workout regimen is a great way to create muscle confusion, which keeps your body guessing and ramps up your metabolism. 6. ACCOUNTABILITY Some facilities require members to sign up in advance for specific classes (Group Training Sessions with your favorite trainer!). This is a great way to keep yourself accountable for your workouts. If you’re signed up and it’s on your schedule, there’s a good chance you won’t skip it. If your gym doesn’t require you to sign up, find a few classes that you want to take and invite a friend or pencil it in on your calendar. 7. TIME MANAGEMENT Juggling your time to get in your workout is one of the biggest challenges faced by gym-goers. Even when they do manage to get through the gym door, they are often watching the clock as they go through their routine, not really focused on the workout at hand. With group exercise classes, that’s all a thing of the past. Group classes are offered at all sorts of hours designed to suit busy lifestyles. While you may have never considered turning up at the gym for a 6:30am workout, a scheduled class at that time can be enough motivation to overcome mind over mattress syndrome and allow you to get more out of your day.

9. FUN There’s really no other way to put it: Group fitness classes are fun. Between the upbeat music, a great workout and a group of people motivating each other along the way, it’s an enjoyable way to exercise. If you’re looking to add a little more pizazz and fun in your fitness life, group classes may be just what you need. 10. SOCIAL When you are sweating alongside a person in a group fitness class you have an instant connection with them. The shared experience of getting through the challenge of the workout creates a bond with a like-minded person who, like you, cares about their body and is motivated enough to do something about it. This may lead to the development of a friendship outside of the gym setting but, even it doesn’t, the bond you form can be a motivator for you to do your best and to show up regularly.

GROUP EX AT THE CLUB The Briar Club’s Group Ex program is a fun and fulfilling way to meet friends and stay in shape. Our Group Ex schedule covers a variety of fitness disciplines and popular classes, from Cycle and Barre classes to Yoga, Cardio, and Weight Training. To enroll in the Group Ex program, simply attend a Group Ex class. For more questions about Group Ex, please contact Stephanie Kampf, Group Ex Coordinator, at (713) 552-2135.
