LETTER FROM THE GENERAL MANAGER
HURRICANE HARVEY I would like to begin by thanking every single member that donated to the Hurricane Harvey Employee Fund. The amazing support from our members to the Briar Club team showed an incredible amount of care
for our family. We were able to hand out many checks to staff who were affected by the Hurricane. The Club fared very well during the hurricane. We appreciate everyone’s patience as we worked hard to reopen after the storm. Our biggest challenge was getting staff members safely to the club. Samantha Van Veen deserves many kudos for her role during the storm. We were able to donate meals to many nurses and doctors who hadn’t had a hot meal in days. Samantha also led a delivery of food and water to Lakewood Church, and a fire station out west where we were greeted with hugs by some very exhausted firefighters. Thank you Samantha for taking the lead on this. COMING SOON There are many exciting things happening around the Club. If you haven’t had a chance to meet our new fitness
director, please stop by and tell Amy hi! Amy brings incredible energy and fresh ideas as we work to grow our fitness program and take it to the next level. Speaking of new, the Board recently approved the capital purchase of new fitness equipment which will take place early next year. We also have a new spiral staircase arriving for our diving board, new LED lights for all of our tennis courts and a playground for the kiddos. Be on the lookout for all these enhancements. GRAB AND GO I hope everyone enjoyed their time by the pool this summer. Sameh Nawar, our food and beverage director, worked hard to bring full table side service to the pool area. We received very good feedback and are prepared to launch this again next pool season. Make sure you stop by our new “Grab and Go” counter located in the lobby
of our fitness center. Pick up a specialty coffee or something warm to eat after your workout. FALL AT THE CLUB Its playoff time! Come watch all the Astros games in the bar on the big screen. Be on the lookout for many special events including college football on Saturdays. Let’s cheer on our hometown boys! THANK YOU In closing, I would like to recognize our outgoing President, David Mordy. Mr. Mordy played a key role with the success of the Club this year and we are very grateful for his leadership. Sincerely, Daniel Moreno
LETTER FROM THE PRESIDENT tributed to the Employee Hurricane Fund. We raised over $27,000 to help employees impacted by the storm, including seven employees with flooded homes. In addition to hurricane relief, Briar Club members gathered on October 5th to hear Jeff Van Gundy speak and to support The Briar Club Employee Scholarship Fund. 2017 FISCAL YEAR
BRIAR CLUB COMMUNITY I’ve long felt that what makes the Briar Club special is our community, not our physical assets. In the wake of Harvey, I think we’ve all been able to see what makes Houston special and what makes the Briar Club special. My heartfelt sorrow goes out to all those impacted by the storm and I would also like to express my appreciation for all of the members who con-
The Briar Club is just wrapping up a strong finish for the 2017 fiscal year. Net Income should finish approximately $1.3 MM above budget with roughly half of that improvement coming from new member initiation fees. We’ve welcomed 90 new members to the club this year, which is both exciting and an excellent sign of the club’s vitality. CAPITAL CONSIDERATIONS The board has been conservative this year in terms of discretionary capital. At the August meeting we voted to approve LED lights for courts 4-9 and to approve a new playground
next to the sports court. A couple of additional capital considerations will be up for discussion by next year’s board. First would be deepening the competition pool. Second would be building three pavilions – two would replace the current temporary structures extending from the Barracuda Café and one would be built between the Kid’s Club and the nearest pool gate. UPCOMING ELECTION The Nominating Committee, led by Marty Thompson, has done an outstanding job this year. We’ve had 13 candidates apply to be on the 6 person slate vying for 3 board member openings for the 2018 – 2019 term. In my mind these new board members will be vital in determining the club’s direction in future years. We could primarily focus on the capital items mentioned above. Alternatively, we could decide to strengthen our balance sheet so that we might have the capacity to purchase additional land if it becomes available. Another alternative would be to slow mem-
berships in order to avoid additional compaction. I think it will be instructive to learn the priorities of different candidates that may vote on these decisions. ANNUAL MEETING The date set for the annual meeting is Wednesday, November 15th. The board is looking forward to discussing the club and recognizing employees that help make the club such an incredible place. I hope to see many familiar and new faces at the meeting. Enjoy autumn and the holiday season as part of The Briar Club Community. Sincerely, David Mordy

AQUATICS
JON DILLER
Aquatics Director poolmanager@thebriarclub.com With the club heading into Fall and the family pool getting ready to close for the Winter, there is one area where the pools pick up in usage. Heading into its sixth year, the year-round USA Swim Team has
entered into an agreement with Rice Aquatics to provide coaches for our program. By doing this it ensures that our swimmers will consistently have top notch coaching while solidifying the longevity of the team by strengthening the tie between The Briar Club and Rice Aquatics. I would like to personally thank Scott Frasier for helping with getting this partnership solidified
and all his efforts to support our team. We are excited to help our swimmers continue to grow, swim faster, and establish a work ethic that will serve them well, even after their days in the pool chasing that black line are long gone.
USA SWIMMING
SWIM LESSONS The Briar Club Aquatics Department continues to offer group, private, and semi-private swimming lessons throughout the Fall and into the winter months. As a general guideline, we will cancel swim lessons for our younger swimmers under 5 if the air temperature is below 60 degrees. Remember to contact the Aquatics Department by February to reserve your spring time afternoon lessons spots as they fill up quickly!
Introducing New Briar Club USA Head Coach Mike Peron with Rice Aquatics! Peron graduated from Cinco Ranch High School, where he was a decorated varsity swimmer, earned All-State honors and was a part of school record relays. Peron was a part of the Rice University Swim Team as a practice player athlete and began coaching for Rice Aquatics prior to graduating in 2012. Overseeing dryland training, coaching all levels of the team and assisting with the masters swimming program, Peron has proven himself as an integral part over the years. Last Spring Mike earned his Master’s degree from the University of Houston in Exercise Science and spent 3 seasons as the Rice University Women’s Swim team volunteer assistant.

TENNIS
JAN VICK
Tennis Director tennis@thebriarclub.com I have great news for our tennis players, the Board has agreed to install LED lights on courts 4 through 9! I am thrilled as we will then have excellent lighting on all our tennis courts. This will happen
within the next couple of months. We just kicked off our Fall season with our annual Challenge Match against the Forest Club. This event has been going on for 28 years now, and although we won the last few years, the Forest Club got the better of us. So the trophy is over there and we will fight to win it back next year. Our Ladies Easy
League has begun and will run through November. This is a great ‘starter’ league for ladies who haven’t played much, or maybe played years ago. All other leagues will run through the end of the year. Any questions about leagues please contact me.
TENNIS EVENTS
FOREST CLUB MATCH The Annual Forest Club Challenge match has been going on with the Briar Club for 28 years, only taking off the year Ike hit. Last year, the Briar Club defeated the Forest Club quite soundly, however, this year, they got us back and beat our BC team convincingly. We will begin having another annual match with the River Oaks Country Club in March, 2018. It will be run with the same format and we are hoping this challenge match will have the longevity of the Forest Club Challenge match.

A: You are correct. If it was one continuous motion, without a second intentional swing or push, then it is a legal shot even if the ball hits your racquet twice in the one swing. It is also your call to make and not your opponent’s call.
