Your donated to the Annual Employee Wine Committee will be very active Holiday Fund; your generosity went a working on the following goals: long way to help our team. FITNESS As we look forward, 2018 promises to be a great year for the Club. Many start the new year with resolution typically related to getting back into shape. I hope you will spend your time here at the Club achieving those goals, especially with all our new fitness equipment and a freshenedup fitness center. Congrats to Amy Patterson, our Fitness Director, for taking on and executing this very involved task. Many great things will
1) Building a wine by-the-glass list that is second to none 2) Creating wine dinners that appeal to all sectors of our membership 3) Investing in future wine programs for the Club 4) Create a wine bottle list that with many varietals and regions represented
Who doesn’t love good wine at cost price? FACILITIES Good news! The playground is on the way. We should expect delivery of the new structure in early March. We will also be working on some other projects around the Club, including smoothing out the grounds between the clubhouse and tennis courts. We will also be adding additional LED lights to the vehicle entrance of the garage and making landscaping improvements to front of the garage.
In conclusion, 2018 promises to be a great year for The Briar Club. Thank you all for your continued support, and please let me know if there is anything I can do for you.

General Manager / COO
GIVING THANKS On December 22nd, we were able to participate in a wonderful tradition with three other Clubs in Houston. During the month of December, the pastry team worked hard to build a very large gingerbread house here at the Club. The gingerbread house was delivered to MD Anderson’s Children’s Cancer Center. The Briar Club, River Oaks Country Club, The Houston Racquet Club and the Petroleum Club of Houston all built houses to be displayed for the kids. The kids get to enjoy the houses for a couple of weeks and then the hospital lets them destroy the houses at a smash party. It is a very moving experience and something we should all be proud to be a part of. I have been a part of this tradition for seven years now and it never gets old seeing the smiles on the kiddos faces as the gingerbread houses are delivered.
Also, if you are in the market for a wine locker, please contact Sameh Nawar, our Food & Beverage Director. We have only 6 more lockers to sell in the Lounge before we begin to build.

LETTER FROM THE PRESIDENT clients; large events as well as smaller more intimate gatherings are filling the calendar. A vibrant banquet and events business is key to our business model and was a key part of the reason for our new clubhouse. GOALS FOR 2018
The Briar Club has been a part of our family since our children were toddlers: a lucky 13 years. We literally cannot remember life without the Briar Club, and we don’t want to. Like many of you, I enjoy the tennis and exercise scene; I have my favorite lunch item and a coffee item from the Grab and Go stand; I frequent the Wednesday Rendezvous; I enjoy the Membership Mixers; and I have even brought in a private event or two to the club. Best of all, I am fortunate to call so many members friends. CLUBHOUSE ADDITIONS For the past 18 months, we members have been getting to know our new clubhouse. Your board and staff have been working to establish best practices and programming. Very little from the old clubhouse was transferrable to our new program. All our staff, whether old or new, have required training in the new facility. We have made huge progress. General Manager Daniel Moreno has been a great addition. He and our new managers and staff have learned many of your names and favorite menu requests. Our banquet business has launched and is growing. We already have repeat
3
For 2018, we should be about achieving the next level. Our new menu seems to be striking the right balance between impressing our membership and keeping club costs in check. There is truly something for everyone – including Vegetarian and Gluten-Free options. Our Youth, Aquatics, Tennis and Fitness also have big plans to interact with our Clubhouse space, lawn and all facilities. The staff as well as your Board of Directors are thinking about all users/members: from toddlers to teenagers, parents to seniors. FITNESS January brings a fresh face to many areas of the Fitness Center. Have you met Amy Patterson? Catch her if you can: she’s living her mantra of “sweat once a day.” She’s been instrumental to bringing to fruition the vision of a Fitness and Wellness Center upgrade. I encourage all to keep any new years’ fitness resolutions by utilizing all the Club offers here. Perhaps that will come in the form of Pickleball. Yes, that’s right. Ask Tennis Pro Mike Alcott about it. The game is fast and fun and makes its debut in January. LOOKING FORWARD We’re pleased to be finalizing our campus with the delivery of the playground equipment this spring. Your continued support is
appreciated as we make sure all equipment and base preparations meet safety standards. In 2017, our Physical Properties Committee – with the help of outside architects – designed three pavilions, and the Board will be evaluating when the club’s finances are ready for their completion. We are very focused on debt reduction and creating a solid long term financial plan before we initiate any construction projects. We are on track and on budget in the early months of this fiscal year (which began October 1st). Attention to detail will carry over to a desire by the Board to review all our club governance documents. In doing so, we have begun reviewing our Bylaws, House Rules, Membership Categories, and Board Policies. You will hear more about this as the year progresses. SCHOLARSHIP FUND In the first quarter of 2018, our employees and their children or grandchildren who have a desire to stretch and grow academically can apply for an Employee Scholarship. This is all due to some excellent work of the Scholarship Committee that raised over $100,000 through two very successful events. We are grateful for all who have spent time on these efforts and, especially, to all who have given their financial support to this worthy cause. Please watch for more information on this Fund, how you can support it, and exciting news of our employees who benefit from it.
In closing, I hope to see you at the Briar Club a lot in 2018. Bring a guest to an event, enjoy a drink on the Veranda, swim in one of our three pools, try a new workout machine or GroupEx class, bring a teen or tween to the Hideout, enjoy the new LED tennis lights, order the Fondue, or play cards in the Library. There is truly something for all our members at The Briar Club in 2018. Sincerely,
Claire S. Curtin
President, Board of Directors

DEAR DR. TENNIS Q: In a doubles match, I thought our opponent’s shot was out and said, “Wasn’t that out?” right after my partner
returned it. Our opponents continued playing and we eventually won the point. Afterward, one of our opponents wondered what was correct. I think since no one stopped playing, we won the point. If our opponents had stopped playing because we disputed the call, the point might have been theirs. Is this true?
A: Saying “Wasn’t that out?” indicates doubt, and under The Code, Item 6, you must give the benefit of the doubt to 11
your opponents. Having said that, it wasn’t technically an ‘out’ call. Your opponents could have stopped play immediately and claimed a ‘hindrance’ (The Code, Item 33 & 34) but when they didn’t, they forfeited the right to claim one later. It was YOUR point. Cheers!
