THE BRIAR CLUB
FROM THE GENERAL MANAGER
I
t’s hard to believe that summer is flying by so quickly. We are seeing high usage in all areas of the Club, which is always exciting. This summer has brought two new directors to our team. Our New Director of Tennis, Brett Emerson, comes to us from River Oaks Country Club as their head tennis pro and director of the River Oaks International Tennis Tournament. We are very excited to have Brett onboard, and we know he will continue to guide our tennis program in the right direction. I would also like to welcome our new Director of Catering, Rebecca Mahon. Rebecca comes to us from Miramont Country Club in Bryan, Texas, where she held the position of Director of Catering. As our catering business continues to grow, Rebecca will play a huge part in our long-term success. If you or your company is looking for a venue for your next event, please contact Rebecca and let us do the work. In our mission to keep our facilities looking their best, we have added two new groundskeepers to our team. Josh and Nikolas will be responsible for keeping our campus clean, our chairs straight, and our towels picked up. If you see them, please welcome them to the Briar Club family! I hope everyone has also had the chance to enjoy the large fan installed on the Sports Court. It has made a world of difference during these hot summer days. We have also scheduled work to resurface Courts 1-3 in the middle of July, and made plans to resurface Courts 8-9 later this year. Dining here at the Club continues to be very popular, and we encourage you to make reservations. I hope you have had the chance to try our new Sunday Brunch, now located in the Lounge. The age restriction in the Lounge is lifted on Sundays, so the entire family can enjoy our new Club buffet. We also have a Bloody Mary bar for the adults! Our Thursday Wine Flights have really taken off, as our beverage manager, Fredy Romero, offers up a different flight of wines every Thursday. As we are in our busiest season, we can’t help but touch on a few safety points in order to ensure a secure and safe campus for all of our families. Please remember that children under the age of 12 must be accompanied by an adult across the Club. We want all of our facilities to remain in first-class condition, so we ask that all parents supervise their children to prevent any spills or accidents. Lastly, election season is almost upon us. It is truly an honor to serve on the Board here at the Briar Club. If you are interested in serving the Club, I encourage you to submit your name for consideration.
EMPLOYEE SCHOLARSHIP FUND RECIPIENTS On behalf of the Scholarship Committee, we are proud to announce the recipients of the Briar Club Employee Scholarship Fund. This fund is only possible through the generosity of our members. We thank you for your kindness and your commitment to higher education. Kristen N. Bui

THE BRIAR CLUB
FROM THE PRESIDENT
I
am a native Texan, so hot summers don’t surprise me. To cope, my family finds a pool, a shady umbrella, and friends. Our favorite spot? The Briar Club. Luckily our campus offers not one but three pools! The Briar Club is in peak season. It’s the time of year that usage hits an all-time high. This time of year, Sameh and Chef Michael have expanded our staff to include many new, fresh faces as we offer poolside service and fill the Veranda. Brett in Tennis, Amy in Fitness, Jon in Aquatics and Gina in Youth are going the extra mile to include programming to suit all of our members. The second quarter of the year always brings new members. This year we’ve met our goals and gone beyond. Go Linda! Behind the scenes at the committee and board level, things are busy as well. Club leadership is dedicating significant time to updating our Bylaws to match our positive financial projections and membership growth - all while supporting the Club’s mission. You are encouraged to stay informed and express your ideas as we go through this process. We had a Town Hall meeting in June and will have another one in October to explore the proposed changes to the Bylaws. We anticipate that those changes will be put to a vote by our membership in November. Remember, per our current Bylaws, these changes can only happen if approved by a majority of Equity Members voting in person or by proxy, so please get informed and involved - the goal here is to make our Club better! If you are an Equity Member and have a deep interest in helping guide policy and growth at the Club, you are invited to be a candidate for nomination to serve for the next three years as a member of the Board. Our Nominating Committee has been selected and will begin interviewing interested candidates in early fall. All members are invited to share good ideas or constructive criticism with our management team or those who serve on committees or as board members. Drop a comment card in the box at the reception desk or fill out the form online. You are invited to sign your name or member number so we can have a conversation about your ideas. I am always grateful for the personal relationships I have built and strengthened as a member over the past 14 years. Friendships have been solidified over many interesting meals and festive libations, hours on the tennis court, cheering for my Barracuda swimmers, exhaling on a yoga mat or Pilates Reformer, by stepping in the “kitchen” of the pickleball court, or most recently as a beginner at a table in the Library declaring “mah jongg!” I hope your Briar Club experience list is as long as mine. See you at the Club this summer, and stay tuned for some great programming once we get back to school. Sincerely, Claire Curtin THEBRIARCLUB.COM | 4

Summer is here; time to enjoy the Texas sunshine! We have some new and exciting events planned for the rest of your summer break. Of course, you can’t beat relaxing by our amazing resort-style pool. For those of you with young children, our toddler pool is open during Club hours for parents to bring the little ones out to splash and play! 2018 has been an amazing year for membership. You have referred 80 of your friends, business associates, and family members to the Club since October. Thank you so much for all of your support! My favorite part of the day is walking around meeting people who have never been to the Club or have not visited since the renovations. I love talking about our campus and bragging that “we’ve had some work done.” You can’t tell we are turning 70 next year! I have received many calls from Members asking if we are on a waitlist yet. Not yet, but

Wow! I cannot believe I have completed one year at this wonderful Club. I joined the Briar Club last May, and I am so proud of all of the achievements that the food & beverage team has made over the past year. From the launch of poolside dining service to our new buffet setups, our unique chinaware featuring the Briar Club logo, and new silverware and glassware, we have so much to celebrate. We are also proud of our brand new kitchen garden, our outstanding seasonal menus and our curated wine list. This is just the start of a wonderful time at the Club, and I would like to give special thanks to the Food & Beverage and
Wine Committees for all of their support. Don’t forget to experience our new Sunday Brunch, now located in the Lounge. Enjoy a mimosa or try our fantastic Bloody Mary bar, created by our bartender Nikki and our bar manager Fredy. Sunday Brunch is a lovely way to gather with friends and family, and I encourage you to check it out. We are looking forward to a great summer and fall with plenty of activities for you and your family to enjoy. Hope to see you around the Club!

The Aquatics Department is here to help you and your family enjoy the water and become better swimmers. We offer swim lessons yearround for all ages, starting at 6 months up to 80+ years! It is a phenomenal workout that is zero-impact on the joints, making it perfect for fitness well into your golden years. The Club offers private and semi-private lessons for adults who are looking for ways to improve their strokes and efficiency, or want to get some training ideas when their swimming routine has grown stale. We have a talented staff specializing in working with toddlers, youth swimmers and adults. Youth private and group swim lessons continue throughout the
summer and continue into the fall/winter. Sign up for after-school times now to reserve your spot. Contact Melissa Squires, Aquatics Coordinator, at swim@thebriarclub.com to check availability and register. We are also proud to host our Junior Lifeguard program. Firstly, I would like to send my regards to all the Briar Club members for the kind words of welcome I have received over the past month. It is an honor to represent and serve the club as Director of Tennis and I will endeavor to fill the big shoes left by Jan Vick. The tennis department staff are an enthusiastic and expertly qualified group. Their work with the membership has impressed me to no end. As individuals and as a team, we are committed to driving an exceptional tennis program. We recently introduced new programming in addition to our regular workouts. Cardio Tennis, Men’s and Women’s Wednesday Workouts, and a Beginner Ladies’ Clinic are currently available to all members. We have something for everyone, so be sure to visit the Pro Shop or

The Briar Club had multiple teams that came through the season victorious, and we look forward to seeing the prosperous trend continue. Well done, ladies! With the support of the Club and its membership, I know that this tennis program has a bright future in store. I’m excited for my tenure and I embrace the trust and responsibility the Club and its membership has placed in me. Please stop by and introduce yourself if you have not already done so. Cheers!
