reetings, Briar Club family! I cannot believe that we are rolling into the holiday season already. It seems like we were just preparing for the opening of the Family Resort Pool for the summer. As we enter the fall season, we are looking ahead to our Annual Members’ Meeting, held this year on Wednesday, November 14. This year’s annual meeting will be much different than many in years past. This year, the Membership will be voting on several changes to our Bylaws. Our Bylaws were written at a time in which the Briar Club was a much different Club, and now it is time to update those governing policies. I recommend every Member log on to our website and review the redline version of the Bylaws. The Board of Directors will also be holding a town hall meeting on Wednesday, October 17 to answer any questions or concerns you may have regarding the proposed changes. Many of these changes simply bring us up to date as a growing Club.

One of our most important goals here at the Club is ensuring the safety of our Members and guests. We have recently observed that many larger SUV-type vehicles are parking on the ramps reserved for compact cars. When this happens, we notice traffic congestion, especially with increased traffic now that Members and guests are parking on the third floor to access the skybridge. Cars are unable to pass side-by-side when these larger cars are sticking out into the pathway of exiting vehicles.

If you have a larger vehicle, please leave the ramp spaces for compact cars. We would also like to remind all of our Members that our third floor skybridge is the safest and easiest way to access our Club. I encourage everyone to utilize the skybridge, especially families with small children.

Our ladies’ Fall Fashion Show went off without a hitch! Thank you to chairs Lindley Arnoldy, Valerie Dieterich, and Candace Thomas, and to our staff for the countless hours spent preparing for this event. We are already looking forward to next year’s show.

If you haven’t been out to the Club on Thursday nights, you are missing out on Thursday Night Wine Flights! This program has been very successful and continues to grow. Each Thursday, our Food & Beverage team curates a selection of the wines they are enjoying at the moment, and presents them in a flight that can be ordered in any of our dining rooms. Previous flights have showcased different varietals, blends, and regions all over the world. Our Food & Beverage Team enjoys selecting these wines for you each week, and I encourage every wine enthusiast to check it out.

Happy fall! This time of year, the weather gets cooler and we make plans to gather with friends and family to enjoy good meals and great company. The Club is the perfect place to come together over a family meal, and we have added new, delightful seasonal dishes for you to enjoy. Our new dishes, like our winter squash panini and vegetable curry, reflect the flavors of the season with fresh, local, in-season produce.

And of course, no fall menu is complete without some pumpkin! Our pumpkin cheesecake is back, along with a few new, sweet choices, so be sure to leave room for dessert.

Please help me welcome dietitian Brittany Link from Advice for Eating, LLC to the Briar Club Fitness & Wellness Team. We have several nutrition events planned in October to help you reach your fitness and wellness goals and stay on track as we head into the holiday season.

I’d like to give a HUGE shoutout to the Briar Club triathlon team for completing our nine-week Summer Tri Training Series and for competing against River Oaks Country Club in our first ever triathlon! We had a blast training together and plan to repeat the series next summer; we hope you’ll join us.

Poolside Yoga, Prosecco & Pops this August was a hit. Save the date for our next event, Yoga & Hops, on Tuesday, October 9. Come for the yoga, stay for the microbrews, good eats and great company!

Lastly, head over to the studios to take a new class! KickSport combines kickboxing moves with interval training, circuit-style workouts, and self-defense training. Vinyasa Flow is a yoga class that links poses with your breath to create flowing sequences. Rhythm Ride is a high-energy, 45-minute ride guaranteed to get your heart pumping. All of our classes are great ways to get moving, clear your mind and meet fellow members! Remember - sweat once a day!

The fall and winter seasons are upon us, and that typically means a slower time around the pools at the Club. Our Family Resort Pool closes for the season on Monday, October 22 and will reopen in spring 2019.

However, there is one area where the pools pick up in usage. This is our year-round youth USA Swim Team. We have over 60 Briar Club Members who are participating on our team this season. The kids work very hard and often, with the older groups swimming up to 6 times per week at 2 hours each practice! Our team operates as a satellite location of the bigger Rice Aquatics USA Swim Team. Our squad teams up with the larger Rice team to go and compete against other area and regional teams throughout the fall and winter. This allows our

swimmers to have more opportunities to form competitive relays for meets, and it increases their success as a team. The Rice program gives our swimmers the opportunity to continue to improve their strokes, fitness, and racing skills throughout the winter and become better all-around athletes. This is the 8th season of USA-level Swim Team at the Briar Club, and it continues to grow in popularity. The strength of this program also feeds into our successful summer swim team, which has now had 5 years of undefeated championship seasons! If you happen to pass by the competition pool sometime in the late afternoon or early evenings over the winter, watch a few minutes of their practice.

It will give you a new appreciation of the hard work that our kids are putting in!

aquatics news CONGRATULATIONS ON A GREAT SEASON! The 2018 Barracudas are Country Club League champions and undefeated for the fifth straight summer! It was an exciting season and we’re already looking forward to next year. Congratulations to all of our swimmers and coaches!

POLAR BEAR SWIM COMPETITION The Club will be hosting our annual Polar Bear Swim Competition from January 2-February 28. This is an endurance race where swimmers will log their total distances swam at the Club each day. A running tally will be kept and awards will be given for the top swimmer in each age group (10 & Under, 11-17, 18-40, 41-60, 61+).

Another Houston summer has passed and we are on to fall programming! Our Junior Program is now in full swing with classes available for children 3 to 18 years of age. Our goal is to foster the social and competitive enjoyment of playing the sport with a continued focus on the development and progression of everyone’s game. Our pro staff have enjoyed having the kids out on the courts and watching them grow as players.

Fall is a busy time for us with many events to look forward to. Aside from our standard programming, we have social events that serve as a great way to introduce you to other members and get in some extra time on the courts. Pickleball continues to grow at the Club, which is a testament to the work that our Head Tennis Pro, Mike Alcott, has put into its implementation in our programming. If you are interested in trying Pickleball, we have equipment and courts available to our Membership with weekly clinics and upcoming events to further cater to our newest addition.

Finally, I have enjoyed my first (HOT!) summer months as your new Director of Tennis. It has been a pleasure to serve you and to continue to grow the tennis program with the help of our brilliant professional staff. I hope to see all of you on the courts soon.

GET INVOLVED! We are beginning the process of recruiting volunteers to serve on 2019 Club Committees. Committees are an excellent way to get involved in the governance of your Club!

ANY MEMBER CAN SERVE ON A CLUB COMMITTEE! Any member and/or spouse, regardless of Membership category, is welcome to volunteer for one of the nine Club committees: Aquatics, Entertainment/Food & Beverage, Finance, Fitness, House/Legal, Membership, Physical Properties, Tennis, and Youth. Member participation on Club committees is critical for the continued success of the Briar Club.

Each committee consists of roughly ten (10) Members and is chaired by one member of the Board of Directors.

TIME COMMITMENT

DEADLINE

The Finance and Membership Commitees meet once per month. The remaining activity committees meet regularly, as needed. Meetings typically last between 1-1.5 hours.

Submit your Committee Volunteer Form for consideration by Monday, December 3, 2018.
