THE BRIAR CLUB

FROM THE GENERAL MANAGER

G

reetings, Briar Club family! It has been a great start to the year for the Club. We have two new additions to the team: Dustin Wade, our new Chief Financial Officer, and Mario Zambrano, our new Food & Beverage Manager. We are excited to have them on board, and they are ready to hit the ground running. If you see them around the Club, please say hello!

We are excited to announce the renovations coming to our green space. The Briar Lawn, located between the Clubhouse and Courts 1-3, has become the heart of our campus, with events, outdoor dining, and plenty of room for the kids to run and play. With these renovations, we aim to provide more consistent programming and additional space for you to come together with friends and family. Our current lawn is easily affected by rain and mud, so we will move from sod to artificial turf to allow us to hold events even after it rains. In addition, the artificial turf will prevent safety hazards from uneven grounds or exposed drains. We will add an additional Veranda, walkways, trees, flower beds, and picnicstyle seating. South of Westheimer, we will build Chef’s Garden, to expand our offering of local, homegrown ingredients. Chef’s Garden will be surrounded by a beautiful garden fence with greenery separating us from the busy world outside. Our goal is to be finished by Memorial Day, so we can fully enjoy the summer in this new space. Check out the rendering of our new space, or visit us online to view a larger version! We can’t wait to share this new area with you and look forward to seeing you soon.

THE BRIAR CLUB

FROM THE PRESIDENT

I

n January, I had the distinct pleasure and privilege to attend, briefly, the annual holiday party we hold for our employees at the Petroleum Club of Houston. We have a mutually beneficial relationship with PCOH that allows us to use each other’s facilities for employee functions. My purpose in being there was to deliver a short welcome and expression of appreciation, and to announce the 2019 Employee Scholarship program. As I watched our employees arrive in their holiday finery, greeting each other warmly and looking forward to an evening of dining, music, and dancing, I was impressed by the genuine affection and respect they have for each other. As we observe every day at the Club, these are really nice, hardworking folks who enjoy what they do and enjoy working with each other. When the time came, I told them that my message was simple. We deeply appreciate their efforts and their faithful service. I added that, just as our Board of Directors concerns itself with planning not just for this year but also three, five, or even ten years into the future, my personal hope would be that, at a similar event ten years from now, each of them would still be with us. The same principle applies, of course, to our Membership. The Briar Club is not just a well-appointed clubhouse in a nice campus with ample athletic facilities. It is a large and diverse family, and it is a unique institution with a terrific history and many great traditions, from our swimming teams to our tennis leagues and our special events. More than anything else, however, it is a place to meet and relax as friends, and one of our greatest traditions is our custom of getting personally acquainted and greeting each other by name. Just as you appreciate being recognized by staff members and other Members, I assure you that they feel the same. It is a challenge to get to know each other but it is well worth the effort. (I’m working on it; if I falter, please introduce yourselves.) We have many new families, and about a third of our Members have joined within the last three or four years. One important tool is our online Membership Directory. Whether it is learning more about that nice family you met by the pool, or arranging a playdate for your children, or scheduling a tennis match, the directory can help Members keep in touch with each other and enhance the experience. It is also a matter of safety and security. Our staff members need to be able to identify your children, match family members to each other, and know whom to contact in case of illness or emergency. Please take a moment to view your online profile and be sure it is complete. Each primary Member should provide at least one email address and one telephone number, each other adult Member of the family is encouraged to do the same, and every family member over 12 years of age should have a photo in the directory. We do not require contact information for children, for their protection, but every family member should at least be listed by name. We will greatly appreciate your assistance in this regard, and a little attention to this detail will enhance the experience, safety, and security for all of us. I look forward to seeing you at the Club. Thanks, and best regards. Rick Walton 2019 President, Board of Directors THEBRIARCLUB.COM | 4

TENNIS BRE T T EM ER SO N, DI RE CTO R O F T ENNIS te n n is di r ecto r@th e br i ar club. c om

After what has been a very wet and dreary winter, we are hopeful for some warmer and drier spring weather that gets us all out on the courts as much as possible. Courts 4-9 have all undergone a complete resurfacing and are in prime condition for Members to get involved with our tennis programs and utilize the facilities with friends and family. Programming for the entire family is available with all standards and levels accounted for. If we see sustained demand, we aim to continue to evolve and improve your experience by creating new avenues for tennis participation. Our ladies’ intermediate and beginner leagues, as well as PIckleball clinics and leagues, have all been popular additions. Our Junior Development Program continues to thrive under the guidance of Head Tennis Professional Mike Alcott. Our new competitive group sessions for red ball players (ages 5-7) and green ball

players (ages 9-10) have been excellent additions and useful to prepare our players for tournament and team competition. The junior program aims to provide for the social player, but to also give kids the opportunity to advance their game to a competitive level if desired. Our Member-Guest tournament is the last weekend of April. Our ladies will compete in a doubles format on Friday, April 26, with the men on Saturday, April 27. This is a great chance to bring a friend to compete and network with other Members and their guests. We have limited space for this event, and it is sure to be a fun time so please sign up online or contact us for more information. I look forward to seeing all of you soon on the (new) courts enjoying some tennis! Cheers!

did you know? FUN FACTS

Roger Federer, Rafael Nadal, and Novak Djokovic have accounted for 52 of the 68 Grand Slam Men’s Singles titles since Federer won his first in 2003. Federer has won 20, Nadal has won 17, and Djokovic has won 15. That is a staggering 76.5% over the almost 17year span. They hold basically all the meaningful records in the men’s game and are continuing to be major factors (pun intended) in their 30s.
