THE BRIAR CLUB

FROM THE GENERAL MANAGER

T

his year is flying by! Here’s what we have been up to this quarter...

Our great lawn was completed in May and we have received great feedback so far. The project contractor, Tellepsen Landscaping, did a fabulous job after the tragic loss of owners Marc Tellepsen and Mark Scioneaux. The Briar Lawn was one of the final projects they designed together. I would like to send a heartfelt thank you to the Tellepsen Landscaping family for coming together as a team and finishing this project in honor of Mark and Marc. If you haven’t had a chance to visit the Briar Lawn yet, make sure you do! Take a stroll through Chef’s garden, relax with a cool beverage and enjoy the space. We all try to do our part to keep an eye on the kiddos, but we know it isn’t always easy! Unfortunately, with school out and summer upon us, we have received more complaints from Members regarding unsupervised children. We have had kids who were originally at the pool found running through the Fitness Center, throwing complimentary snacks or trash on the tennis courts, and having “ice fights” with ice from our water/ice dispensers. We have found that many times when staff approaches, the kids have a tendency to run. Please remember that all children under the age of 12 must be supervised by a parent or guardian at all times while at the Club. Please join me in welcoming our new property manager, Jesse Pizano! Jesse comes to us with great experience in managing complicated campuses, having spent 14 years at River Oaks Country Club. He brings a wealth of knowledge to help keep our campus in tip-top shape. Welcome aboard Jesse! As we continue to build an amazing leadership team here at the Club, I want to recognize all of our department heads for their hard work and dedication to The Briar Club experience. Day-to-day Club operations can be tough to balance, but we have a great team to face those challenges and provide you with the ultimate home away from home. In previous years, the Club worked hard to plan for the facilities we currently have. We got here... so now what? The results from May’s facilities survey will help the Board to determine which steps are next in order to keep our Club headed in the right direction. Thank you to all who participated. Membership input is everything! Thank you also to Brenda Bowman, our Club Treasurer, and the long-term finance sub-committee. This subcommittee, along with our CFO Dustin Wade, spent numerous evenings forecasting and planning what our next 5 years looks like. Their results, along with the survey results, will give the Board the tools necessary to help plan strategically for capital improvements and debt repayment. It’s a tough job, but someone has to do it! The wine committee held its first meeting in June. Thank you to Michael Foertsch for agreeing to chair the committee. This year’s committee will focus on wine socials, wine education, wine dinners and working to provide our Members with a wine list that exceeds expectations. We hope to see many of you attend these events! More to come... Thank you for your continued support. If there is ever anything I can do for you, please know that my door is always open. Daniel A. Moreno General Manager, COO THEBRIARCLUB.COM | 2

THE BRIAR CLUB

FROM THE PRESIDENT

B

ecause of our publication schedule, writing for a quarterly newsletter can sometimes be a bit of a shot in the dark. As I write this, however, I am confident that by the time you read it the improvements to the Lawn will have been completed and the results of the membership survey concerning facilities and improvements will have been analyzed by management and the Board of Directors. We already know that the responses to the survey reached an almost unprecedented level for an organization like ours, and we are grateful for your participation. Although the exact next step in the fine-tuning of the campus cannot be predicted with certainty, you can be sure that we will take your responses and comments seriously and use the information to try to make the Club the place you want it to be. This “fine-tuning” is not just about the brick-and-mortar aspects of the Club, however, but also extends to the way we use the facilities and interact with each other. Attendance at many of our recent events has been gratifying, indicating that our programming and planning in line with Member expectations. The expanded dining facilities in the Clubhouse and the Family Resort Pool and its inviting surroundings have proven to be very popular. Although membership has been increasing at a slow but steady rate, we still have not reached even the previous limit on the number of memberships (before last year’s amendment of the bylaws). This indicates quite clearly the wisdom of constructing the new Clubhouse, adult pool, and additonal tennis courts, because the “old” campus could not have accommodated current levels of utilization. On the other hand, having so many happy and energetic Members and their children on the campus all at once has highlighted the need to be considerate toward each other. One step each of us can take is to make reservations not only for significant occasions such as holiday brunches but also for routine cookouts and peak dining hours (especially on weekends). This enables Management to plan for adequate staffing and food and beverage stocks, and also makes it less likely that Members will be disappointed upon arriving unannounced. During peak events, several seatings are often needed in order to accommodate as many as possible. To be sure you have a spot at your preferred time, please make a reservation early. Another thing to remember is that seating in some areas, such as the Lounge Bar and most of the outdoor areas around the fire pit, tennis courts, and pools, is always first-come, first-served. Things become complicated when Members attempt to hold tables by placing bags and towels on them and then going off to work out, play tennis, or engage in some other activity. This has a pyramid effect that can make things more difficult, not less. Likewise, please stay in touch with your children and their (and your) guests, to be sure they have not already taken up residence somewhere else. Children, in particular, sometimes tend to congregate in areas other than those their parents have selected. If you are unable to find a space in your favorite spot, please check with a staff member and every effort will be made to find you an alternate location. The Briar Club is first and foremost a family place, and we should treat each other like family. Management, and your Board of Directors, work very hard to ensure that your experience is excellent. We will make their job easier, and improve every Member’s enjoyment of the Club, if we are also excellent to each other. Rick Walton 2019 President, Board of Directors THEBRIARCLUB.COM | 3

FITNESS A MY PAT T ER S O N, DI RE CTO R O F F I T NESS f i t n e s s di r ecto r@th e br i ar club.com fitness myths: debunked

massage therapy

Myth #1: You can crunch your way to great abs. Fact: You’ve probably been doing crunches since gym class in high school, but they’re an ineffective way to get a true six-pack. Instead, toned abs come from a combination of interval training, eating effectively, getting adequate sleep, keeping your stress levels low, and of course, selecting the right training moves. “If you look at bodybuilders with block abs, they’re not getting those from crunches, they’re getting them from squats, deadlifts and chin-ups,” says Eric Allen, personal trainer and strength coach.

Myth #2: You can run off the pounds. Fact: People believe in the power of cardio, but when it comes to shredding inches, focused weight training is a more effective way to drop pounds than banking hours on the treadmill. Interval and weight training are a better way to reduce fat, because weight training builds muscle, which burns more calories at rest. “Muscle is metabolically active, meaning that the more of it you have on your body the more calories you’ll burn throughout the day even when you’re not exercising,” says Nick Clayton, M.S., M.B.A., personal training program manager. Of course, keep in mind that while you can burn away calories, no amount of time in the gym can out-train a bad diet. Sources: Men’s Journal, SELF

OUR NEW MASSAGE TABLE Have you had a chance to try out our new massage table yet? The difference is in the bend! The Comfort Craft Model 800 changes the way therapists position the body. Effortless ergonomics are easily obtained using the cutouts in the pad to step in close to the body. The smooth, electric powered mid-split design dramatically improves treatment because the patient’s back is immediately taken out of compression as it is on flat tables. Come try a session with Katherine and feel the difference for yourself! To schedule appointments with Katherine, please contact the Fitness Desk at (713) 622-3667 ext. 2145.

GENERAL INFORMATION

Your enjoyment of The Briar Club and its facilities is our most important goal. We hope that the Club is your go-to summer destination, this summer and for many years to come. In order to serve our diverse membership needs, the Board of Directors and The Briar Club management team have developed rules and guidelines to ensure that everyone can focus on fun. We invite you to look over a few reminders for this summer season to ensure your family’s safety, comfort, and satisfaction. If you have any concerns, please feel free to get in touch with us by reaching out to any of our management staff members. We look forward to seeing you at the Club!

SAFETY IN THE PARKING GARAGE To provide a safe experience getting to and from your activities, we encourage you and your family to utilize our Skybridge, which provides a direct route across Timmons Lane without crossing oncoming traffic. Park on the third floor of the parking garage for direct access, or use the first or second floor parking garage elevators to get to the Skybridge entrance. Please note that the parking spaces on the ramps in the garage are reserved for compact vehicles. Larger SUV-type vehicles impede the flow of traffic and can cause dangerous situations. If you have a larger vehicle, please leave the spaces on the ramps for compact cars. VALET We are happy to offer valet parking in the porte cochère near our front entrance. Please note that this is not a parking area and vehicles should not be left unattended at any time. NANNY AUTHORIZATION FORMS To ensure the safety of our Members and children, all nannies and guardians who will accompany children must be registered with the Club. To register a nanny or guardian, please visit our website for the Nanny Authorization Form. The form must be on file for all nannies or guardians and a photo of the nanny must be taken upon first entrance to the Club. No registration is considered complete without a form and photo. DRESS CODE The Club maintains a casual dress code in all of its

Clubhouse areas. The casual dress code includes slacks, dress jeans, dress shorts, skirts and dresses, sleeved or collared shirts for men and boys, and shoes. No swim attire, including swimsuits, is permitted inside the Clubhouse. Children ages ten and older are expected to adhere to the dress code. CHILD SUPERVISION Per The Briar Club House Rules, no child or guest of Members under the age of 12 years shall access or remain at the Club if unaccompanied by a parent or other adult, unless registered in a specific camp or Briar Fun Day. POOL SAFETY • Careful and considerate behavior is asked of all Members and their guests. • Parents must accompany children 10 and under any time they are in a pool area. • All children under age 5 must be accompanied and supervised at arm’s length by a responsible adult in the Family Resort Pool. • Pool toys such as inner tubes, “noodles”, large floats, water guns, and tennis balls are not permitted in the pools and may be removed by the lifeguards at their discretion. • A full list of pool safety rules is located online and posted in pool areas at the Club. SMOKING The Briar Club is proud to be a non-smoking facility. Per our House Rules, no smoking of tobacco or any other substance, or any use of tobacco products, or any use of vapor devices such as electronic cigarettes or equivalents is permitted on Club premises.
