THE BRIAR CLUB
FROM THE PRESIDENT
“T
ime flies when you’re having fun.” It is a rather worn old saying, but it still holds considerable meaning. Looking back over the last three years, I realize that when a Member challenged me to run for a position on the Board of Directors I had no idea how daunting or how rewarding it could be. The Nominating Committee asked me if I understood the time commitment. They cautioned that I would have to chair a different committee, at the pleasure of successive Presidents, and the assignments might not always (or ever) reflect my first choices. I had heard of long, contentious Board meetings. I ran anyway, and I have never regretted it. It has indeed been often time-consuming, usually interesting, sometimes frustrating, but always rewarding. Now, nearing the end of my term, I express my gratitude to all of you for your support and especially your participation in the recent Member survey and your response to the Bylaws revision project we undertook last year. It has been an honor to serve as a Board member and, this year, as Club President. As immediate Past President I will be privileged to continue to participate next year as a member of the Board “ex officio”, but I look forward to turning over the reins to a new President (elected at the October Board meeting) and the new directors who will be elected in November. The Nominating Committee is busy interviewing candidates for those three positions, and I hope that you will attend the Meet the Candidates receptions and vote in this year’s election as enthusiastically as you did last year. Watch for announcements about the election and candidates. I also invite each of you to consider joining me and the other Member volunteers who serve on our standing committees. Although by the time this letter is published the annual Board election cycle will be well underway, there will still be ample time to volunteer for one of those committee positions. Our governance model is based on day-to-day management by a team of skilled and experienced hospitality professionals; a Board of Directors that sets policy, adapts budgets, and oversees financial performance and capital expenditures; a strong complement of committees that support the various management departments, plan events and programs, and make recommendations about everything from landscaping to membership applications. They are integral part of our structure, and committee service is one of the best ways to learn about Club operations and, perhaps, to prepare for eventual Board candidacy. It is also an excellent way to meet other Members. Committees typically meet monthly, usually for lunch, and each is chaired by a Board member. A list of these committees can be found on the Club website or on the back page of this issue. Each year, the incoming President appoints the chairs and then there is a kind of “draft” from among those who have submitted volunteer forms. You will receive an invitation to participate, with a link to the volunteer form, in the Club’s digital communications later this year. Please watch for it, and consider volunteering. Any Member (of any class) is eligible to serve. It would not be appropriate to conclude this letter without expressing my sincere appreciation for the devotion and efforts of our talented management team and staff. I will not mention any of them by name, because to mention one would slight others. I cannot make distinctions among them and there is not space to list them individually. Suffice it to say that in every way I have been able to support them, they have repaid me tenfold. They are wonderful people, and I am grateful for all they do for us. Best regards, Rick Walton 2019 President, Board of Directors

We’re excited to bring onsite physical therapy back to the Club this fall! Beginning October 1, physical therapists Ryan and Clay Ardoin of Sculpt U will be onsite for your physical therapy needs. RYAN ARDOIN, PT, DPT, CSCS, CERT. DN, CPT-NASM Dr. Ryan Ardoin graduated from Utica College with his Doctorate of Physical Therapy in 2011. He is certified in Dry Needling, Selective Functional Movement Assessment (SFMA), has a specialty in strength and conditioning (CSCS) and is a certified personal trainer through the National Academy of Sports Medicine. He has worked with everyone from veterans to professional athletes. His understanding of how the body moves, performs, and perceives pain is extraordinary, and his own history of having back surgery allows him to connect with his patients on a different level as he helps to achieve their fitness goals. CLAY ARDOIN, PT, DPT, CSCS Dr. Clay graduated with his Doctorate of Physical Therapy from Ithaca College. He is also a certified strength and conditioning specialist (CSCS). Clay was a two-sport athlete in college, which inspired his focus on optimizing performance on and off the field. Dealing with injuries through his athletic career taught him the principles of injury prevention, recovery and proper implementation of movement patterns. Dr. Clay’s programming focuses on increasing strength, endurance and flexibility while decreasing pain and optimizing movement in both daily activities and athletic performance.
