FROM THE
G
General Manager
reetings, Briar Club family! What a year it has been for the Club. I am so proud and grateful of the team we have in place. Our financial position continues to grow stronger, and our team continues to rock it. I want to especially thank our Assistant General Manager, Samantha Van Veen, and our Chief Financial Officer, Dustin Wade, for their continued leadership. We strive on a daily basis to make The Briar Club stand above the rest. We are incredibly proud of our Club and all we have acomplished over the last almost four years in our new facilities. It takes a strong team to make that happen! Thank you to all of our department directors, managers, and supervisors for their continued leadership and loyalty. Your work does not go unnoticed, and I am so proud of each and every one of you. We have much more to accomplish!
BOARD OF DIRECTORS 2020
I have been extremely blessed with many great Boards while here at the Club. I want to thank Rick Walton for his leadership during 2019. During his tenure, we were able to get the Great Lawn completed, and we were also, with the help of the Finance Committee, able to make a very healthy payment toward our master loan in September. Thank you, Rick, for your dedication and leadership. Moving forward, we are extremely thrilled to have Brenda Bowman at the helm for 2020. Brenda chaired the Finance Committee for the last three years and oversaw a very healthy transformation of the Club’s financials. You should take great comfort with the Club’s current Board of Directors. I would also like to welcome our new Board members, Kedrick Brown, Jay Hellums, and Jeff Wood.
BISTRO NO MORE
Beginning in June of 2020, we will start construction on the restaurant formally known as the Bistro. This is not a typical remodel with paint, carpet, etc.; this is a full-blown start from scratch buildout. In September, I presented the new concept to the Physical Properties Committee, which voted unanimously to proceed to the Finance Committee. The Finance Committee, in October, voted unanimously to approve funds to pay for the project. We will not incur any debt from this project as we will be paying from our cash reserves. In November, the Board of Directors were presented the project, and it was approved unanimously. We are very excited about this project, which will transform this room into a beautiful dining facility for families and friends. Once re-opened in late August, the room will be named “The Grill” to pay homage to the original Grill located in the previous Clubhouse. It is warm, inviting, and will become a very popular dining location. Renderings of the room will be displayed in early February in front of the current room, but I welcome you to give me a call or shoot me an email if you would like to see them before then.
SECURITY
Security is of high importance to all of us here at the Club. Over the last two months, we have upgraded our security presence in our parking garage. Some of these changes include: 12 additional security cameras, including the surrounding exterior of the parking garage; closing the southeast pedestrian entrance to an exit-only staircase, preventing unwanted foot traffic from direct access to the stairwell; adding additional staff members to our security team; installing additional exterior lighting around the perimeter of the parking garage; and adding a security office in which more camera monitoring will take place. All of these additions will help; however, please remember we are still in a vulnerable area where quick break-ins and robberies occur. Please always be aware of your surroundings, and if you feel that something doesn’t look or feel right, do not hesitate to call our Receptionist and we will send someone right over.
LOCKER ROOMS
Many of you use the steam rooms located in our locker rooms. The unit that was initially installed in the building tied both the ladies’ locker room and the men’s locker room steam rooms together. I am proud to say that we did upgrade our steam generator, and now the ladies’ and men’s rooms are on separate systems. If one goes down, the other will continue to work. Speaking of locker rooms, I want to send a huge thank you and recognize our locker room staff here at the Club. The team that works in the locker room continue to go above and beyond the call of duty to provide our Members with superior service. Thank you Marta, Gloria, Roy, Aurelio, Dexter, Jose, Jerry, Alma and Sylvia. Thank you all for your continued support. I’ll see you at the Club!
Daniel Moreno General Manager/C.O.O.

FROM THE
A
President
s I am writing this prior to the new year of 2020, I am feeling many emotions as the holidays are upon us. I am completing my third year as a director and officer, having served as your treasurer for those three years. While that is a bit of an anomaly, I consider it to have been a privilege to have served the Membership. It provided continuity to the office and finance leadership, and when coupled with strong finance committees over the past three years, we were able to complete several accomplishments even through the turnover of the CFO position in 2019. Most notably, a five-year long-term financial plan was delivered to the Board in late 2019. This is a living model to assist the Board in financial decisions. I want to express a special thank you to Margaret Funderberg, Mark Worscheh and David Huff for diligently working for the past two years to deliver this valuable tool!
THANK YOU
I want to thank our outgoing Board members who have been dedicated to improving our Club and the Member experience: Claire Curtin (who served as our President in 2018) and Orion Campbell. It has been an honor to serve with you both! I’d like to welcome our three new Directors: Kedrick Brown, Jay Hellums and Jeff Wood. Thank you for running for the Board. I’m confident each of you will find your service to be a rewarding experience. And, a big thank you to each committee member who serves. Committees represent the Membership and have a voice as an advisor to the Board and management. Last, I’d like to recognize our great management team and dedicated staff. We are fortunate to have a team who is energetic, forwardthinking and well-respected in the club industry. Please take time to say “thank you” when you see great things happening on our campus.
LOOKING AHEAD TO 2020
I am excited about our Club and hope you are as well! We have a beautiful campus and our family continues to grow. We are positioned extremely well in our community and recently raised our initiation fees to better align with the great value we offer. We are truly a gem inside the loop! When my family joined in 2008, the campus footprint was much different than it is today but the culture was the same - family values. I am watching my grandkids grow up here and nothing pleases me more than when they ask to go to “the Club!” 2019 saw the addition of our fantastic great lawn, and 2020 promises to be exciting as we transform the Bistro into a new venue for families to enjoy and make new memories. As I lead our Board of Directors in 2020, we will continue our focus on balancing the Club’s resources to improve our campus and reduce our debt. The Club is financially positioned well and we will continue to be conscientious stewards. We will focus our attention on a strategic vision to ensure the Club continues to serve our Membership for many years to come. I believe 2020 will be a fantastic year for The Briar Club and I encourage each Member to enjoy our events and amenities! I look forward to seeing you at the Club!

quick tips to elevate your game from Brett Emerson, Director of Tennis What you do when the ball leaves your racquet matters! When the ball comes off your strings, use that “free time” to set yourself up for success for what comes next from your opponent’s racquet. It all starts with moving your feet - don’t simply stand there and watch your shot. Get active! Use your time to either recover to a neutral or more defensive position behind the baseline, or use it to get forward to the net as an aggressive alternative. When you have time on the court, if you aren’t being productive and getting something positive from that time, your opponent will be. No “golfer’s-pose” shots! Stay active and rest when the point is over. Make this a point of emphasis in your next match and you’ll see great results. Have fun out there!
