hat an amazing summer we have had! It’s hard to believe the holidays are upon us already. As the pandemic has continued on and restrictions have tightened once again in the face of the delta variant, our employees rose to the challenges and stepped up to the plate. I am very proud of our team here at The Briar Club. There are many behind-the-scenes moments that you never get to see that make such an impact on your visit to the Club, and we look forward to celebrating these employees at the Annual Meeting in November. Please be sure to attend - all members are welcome. The Club’s financial status continues to be strong, which will allow us to make some campus improvements over the next couple of years. As our cash position remains strong, we will be able pay for these projects out of cash reserves. Under the leadership of our CFO, Dustin Wade, our reporting and financial forecasting is stronger than ever. Thank you, Dustin, for your continued dedication. The Club’s food & beverage program is also performing strongly. If you are contemplating an event for 2022 - I recommend you get on the books as soon as possible! Our food & beverage team has proposed a budget of over 7 million dollars in food & beverage sales. To put that into perspective, back in 2008, the Club’s food & beverage revenue was 2.7 million. That also includes going from about 60 food & beverage employees to over 100 employees. The Club is not a small operation anymore! Congratulations to our food & beverage team for taking our operations to the next level - not just financially but with our service standards as well. I receive regular feedback from members regarding dining experiences here at the Club. Please know that when we receive those compliments we definitely acknowledge those employees. If you experience any part of service around the Club in which you believe a team member should be recognized - not just food & beverage! - please send them our way. If you haven’t had a chance to attend our Lunch with the GM events, please do so! I usually give an update regarding Club operations and then I answer all of your questions in a very casual setting. So far, we have had five this year and I have thoroughly enjoyed each of them. They normally fill up, so sign up early. These meetings will typically give you a sneak peek of future projects and other exciting items on the horizon. Our goal with these meetings is to have a different group of members at each one so that we can connect with as many members as possible. You can register online, typically beginning a month out. I’d like to recognize some of our team’s accomplishments. First of all, congratulations to Samantha Van Veen, our Assistant General Manager, for being the youngest female ever to obtain the CCM (Certified Club Manager) designation. This valuable, internationally recognized, and widely-respected designation is a mark of an individual’s long-term commitment to professional development and the Club industry. We are extremely proud of her and we are honored to have her as a part of the Briar Club family! I’d also like to recognize Amy Park Patterson, our Director of Fitness, for winning her division in a recent bodybuilding competition. You can read more about her win on page 11 of this newsletter. Finally, with the fiscal year ending, I would like to recognize all of our department heads for a very successful year - especially with the challenges and unknowns of the pandemic. It is important as a private club to keep growing and keep thinking outside the box in order to make our members’ visits special. I hope you are all very proud to be a part of The Briar Club. We have something truly special here, and we have big ideas and bright plans for the future. Daniel Moreno General Manager/C.O.O. 4 / OCTOBER-DECEMBER 2021

oday as I write this note, the City of Houston is preparing for Tropical Storm Nicholas to make landfall. With that in mind, we had to make the decision to close the Club for a day to ensure the safety of our employees and members. The recent surge of the delta variant and weather-related challenges remind me of how resilient we are as Houstonians. The current storm comes days after the 20th anniversary of 9/11/2001 - a somber time for us, yet another reminder of how resilient, inspiring, and strong we are as Americans. The Briar Club management team and Board will always ensure that the safety of our employees and members is priority number one. Period. As we wind down our Club’s fiscal year (ending September), I am proud to report that our financial results have exceeded expectations across all metrics. Members frequently ask me how the Club survived the 2020 pandemic, shutdown, and partial reopening followed by normal operations. Not only did the Club survive, it thrived, and has become even stronger. The Club added new members to our ranks, making 2021 the third best year for new memberships. As such, we are quickly approaching our equity member cap that once achieved will necessitate a waitlist. This is a proud accomplishment, but this success will require careful and prudent financial and budget planning as this revenue source dissipates. A high class problem to be sure! We are also enthusiastically awaiting the opening of our completely renovated and beautiful Family Grille. Supply chain disruptions delayed our opening a few weeks, but rest assured this slight delay will be well rewarded! Thank you to the various committee members that assisted and have been involved in this endeavor dating back to 2018. A special thanks to Kathy Masterson, Amy Munger, and Elizabeth Stiver for their countless hours combing through each and every detail of the renovation. Their expertise proved invaluable and the Club owes each of them a true and sincere debt of gratitude. Once the Family Grille is completed, be on the lookout for additional campus enhancements as Phase One of the future capital improvements are introduced. The Briar Club 2030 Plan is nearly finished and I am confident you will find the survey results both informative and interesting. You will receive the survey results in October. Thanks again to all who participated in this collaborative process. I also want to encourage you to be active and attentive in the coming weeks as we begin the process of electing three new members to the Board of Directors. The new Directors will be announced at the Club’s annual meeting in November and all our members are invited to attend. The annual meeting is a time to celebrate the past year and recognize our wonderful staff with awards such as tenure, employee of the month, and leadership awards, among others. A brief financial report will be provded as well. The evening will culminate with a very long and dull speech by the outgoing President. Just kidding of course - and I do wonder how many of you even got to this point of my long note! In all seriousness, I have enjoyed my tenure as your President and have worked hard to serve my fellow members and friends. Thank you and I hope our paths cross soon! MAK ING dreams HA PPE N , ONE STEP AT A TI ME ! It’s no secret that our everyone on our fitness team shares the belief that no matter what goal, dream, wish or hope you have - you should go for it! Need a little inspiration? Look no further than our very own fitness director. During last year’s shutdown, Amy Park Patterson set her sights on a goal, and this June, she achieved it: she competed in a body building competition and won the 45+ Masters Bikini Division. “It took hard work, discipline, sacrifice, and relentless dedication,” Amy said. “I never thought I’d have the guts to go on stage in front of hundreds of people in a teeny tiny bikini... especially at almost 50... but there I was, in better shape than I was at 20 years old!” Amy’s advice? Just start moving. If you have specific fitness, wellness, or sport goals but aren’t sure how to move towards them, reach out - our team would love to help you. “Fitness truly is for everyone, no matter what shape you are in, how old you are, where you live, or what limitations you have or have been told you have,” she said. “You never know what you are capable of until you try. And if it scares you... even better! Go all in!”

P L A N A stress-free H OLIDAY PA RTY AT H O M E Believe it or not, the holidays are almost upon us! We asked our resident event experts, Jeana Auger, Director of Catering, and Shelby Buchtien, Catering Sales Manager), for their best party planning tips. Here’s what they said: CREATE A LIST Plan ahead and keep it manageable. Know what you are comfortable handling and delegate and/or hire the rest. Asking guests to help or bring something allows them to feel more involved. Stretching yourself too thin keeps you from being able to enjoy the party, too! H AV E A BUDGET Whether big or small, a budget is important to keep you on track. Take inventory of what you already have before going shopping. Add an extra 10% for unforeseen expenses. SEN D INV ITES EAR LY Your friends’ and family’s seasonal calendars will fill up quickly, especially those coveted Fridays and Saturdays! Secure your dates early to ensure the people you really want to attend have blocked off their calendars. Sending a paper invitation never goes out of style! P EO PLE LOV E TO EAT Use this below as a guide, but always overestimate when planning food & beverage. The last thing you want is to run out! If you have extra, send guests home with cute to-go boxes or donate leftover food to a local organization in need. 2-4 pieces per person, 30-60 minutes before dinner, cocktail hour 5-6 pieces per person, 1.5-2 hour event, preceding dinner time 8-10 pieces per person, 2-4 hours event, heavy hors d’oeuvres 12-15 pieces per person, 4+ hours event, dinner replacement

Take it easy! D O N ’ T WA N T TO C O O K ? Reach out to our Catering & Special Events department to create a custom menu tailored to your party. Pick-up from the Club at your specified date and time and serve. Hint: re-plate everything on your trays when you get home and all your guests will think you spent days cooking! D O N ’ T WA N T TO C L EA N ? Your Club has a variety of event rooms on the 2nd floor of the Clubhouse and would love to help you plan the whole party. Reach out to Jeana at cateringdirector@ thebriarclub.com to get started.

Prepare food in oven-safe dishware the day before so you can spend less time in the kitchen and more time mingling with your guests the day of the party. KEEP TH E PARTY F LOWI N G 1.5 drinks per guest per hour is a good starting estimate for most people. Pre-batched cocktails can be crowd-pleasers and save you time. Set up a station with garnishes, cocktail picks, and custom cocktail napkins for an added touch. • Ask your favorite Briar Club bartender to suggest a signature cocktail/pre-batch cocktail recipe, or see page 6 of our holiday menu for inspiration. Scan the QR code to the side to view! • Opt for a hot cocoa/coffee bar with a variety of toppings for a non-alcoholic option also seen on page 6 of our holiday menu! AC COM M O DATE EVE RYO N E Make sure there is at least one thing everyone can enjoy. Provide food options for different tastes and dietary restrictions. Ask ahead of time if there are special dietary needs you should know about.

Serve on a Club Committee! ANY MEMBER CAN SERVE ON A CLUB COMMITTEE!

This is an exciting time of year: We are beginning the process of recruiting volunteers to serve on 2022 Club Committees. Committees are an excellent way to get involved in the governance of your Club. Committee members help to drive decisions in each department and ensure all Members’ enjoyment of The Briar Club.

Any Member of any membership category is welcome to volunteer for one of our Club committees: Aquatics, Entertainment/Food & Beverage, Finance, Fitness, House/Legal, Membership, Physical Properties, Tennis, and Youth. Each committee consists of roughly ten members and is chaired by one member of the Board of Directors.

TIME COMMITMENT The Finance and Membership Committees meet once per month. The remaining committees meet regularly, as needed. Meetings typically last between 1-1.5 hours. Regular participation is essential to every committee.

COMMITTEE SELECTION Committee selections will be made by Committee Chairs by the end of December 2021. Committee Chairs may limit the number of participants.

DEADLINE There are several easy ways to submit your Committee Volunteer Form! Fill out our form online and submit it directly to us. You can also download the form from our website or pick one up from our front desk, fill it out and email it to Linda Benson at membership@thebriarclub.com. Submit your Committee Volunteer Form for consideration by Wednesday, December 1, 2021.
