FROM THE

General Manager DA N I E L A. MO R E NO, G E N E RA L MANAGE R /CO O daniel.moreno@thebriarclub.com

A

s we enter our busiest season of the year, I wanted to take the time to share some updates on a few Club happenings. First, I’ve heard a few rumors floating around that we have opened reciprocity of our Family Resort Pool to other Clubs around the area. The only Club we offer reciprocity for with our resort pool is Westwood Golf Club, which has

always been the case. Their use is very minimal. Regarding rumors, every Club has them and every Club has to deal with them! If you have heard information through the grapevine that caught you off-guard recently, please check with us to make sure that information is true. Most of the time it isn’t, and we would love to debunk any false narratives. We can always be reached via email, phone, or at the Club. All three Phase One projects are in full swing behind the scenes! At the time of publication, our architects are busy putting together renderings for our Competition Pool and surrounding areas. Expected completion of the pool is June 2023. We expect to begin construction in September, right after our summer season. Once we receive the first renderings from our architects, we will then send back to the proper committees for input and feedback. We have completed the first round of drawings for the pickleball courts on the fourth floor of the parking garage and expect to take these drawings back to the Tennis and Physical Properties Committees and the Board for final approval to proceed. As it stands now, we have three reservable, regulation-sized pickleball courts with LED lighting, restroom facilities, and casual seating areas. Finally, all of the planning is complete and Courts 8 and 9 are set to become clay as soon as the demolition is complete for the Competition Pool. The total costs of the courts will be right around $150,000. Construction is a very quick and easy process. At the beginning of March, I announced in an email that we stationed two security guards on the skybridge and at valet to help us monitor traffic at alternate entrances to the Club. These stations have been a great addition to our operations. We will keep those guards there for the time being as we’ve seen a huge decrease in Fitness Center usage at night from member guests. We will continue to monitor this daily. Thank you for your continued support as we continue to get everyone checked in upon entering the Club. With increased traffic around the Club this season, I want to remind you to be extra careful in and around the parking garage. Reduce your speed and take caution to watch out for families with small children loading or unloading. Additionally, we have many members that are parking large vehicles in compact car parking spots. If you are unsure about the dimensions of a compact car, it is any vehicle that is between 161” and 187” in length. Larger vehicles can impede the visibility of oncoming traffic, so if you have a vehicle larger than 187”, please refrain from parking in compact spots. April is a record month for The Briar Club as we are projecting around $800,000 in food & beverage sales. Unfortunately, as business booms, the labor market struggles. Dr. Jim Butler, Club Benchmarking CEO, recently said, “The club industry is facing an unprecedented time in our lifetime as unemployment is under 4% in most areas, inflation is over 7%, and labor inflation in the club business is over 20% for the last 2 years. Additionally, finding workers in the hospitality industry, of which clubs are a sub-sector, is challenging as many workers have chosen other fields.” I share this with all oAprf you because we are not immune to these issues, and we do share those challenges. The hiring pool is almost completely dry. We are an all-hands-on-deck organization and will continue our best to provide service that meets or exceeds your expectations. The good news for The Briar Club is that we have been able to maintain a huge majority of our staff during the pandemic. Those staff members will be working harder than ever this summer as we ramp up for our summer season. Give any staff member you see an extra “Thank you!” or “Great job!” as you see them across campus. Now is the time to show our gratitude more than ever. Thank you for your continued support of the Club! I hope to see you around campus soon. Daniel Moreno General Manager/C.O.O.

elcome to spring at the Club! This is always a great time of year, as families return en masse to enjoy the full slate of amenities we offer. Among kid camps, workout classes, tennis tournaments, swim club, and family dining events, there is truly something for everyone as the Club ramps up programming in all areas. Be sure to check in often on the website and the Briar Club app to keep track of offerings for the entire family.

I’m happy to report the Club is in great shape. We had strong membership growth through the pandemic, even while increasing the initiation fee. The Club’s cash position now stands at over $6 million. At the end of March, we had 1,090 equity members, just 10 new equity memberships short of our cap of 1,100. Over the next few months, we will move to a waiting list for new members for the first time in recent memory. I want to congratulate Linda Benson for her dedication and thank all of you who have recommended the Club to your friends and sponsored their membership applications. Soon we will be kicking off construction on our initial slate of Phase One growth projects. Our group of design specialists is already starting work on updating clubhouse decor. In May, we will commence construction of the new pickleball facility on the top floor of the parking garage, which will involve three new pickleball courts to meet the ongoing demand for dedicated, reservable courts, as well as a shaded sitting area and new bathroom facilities. The new pickleball complex is expected to be complete by mid-summer. From there, we plan to move quickly to updating the south side of our campus, which involves renovating the front lap pool and converting Courts 8 and 9 to clay courts. The front lap pool is the oldest part of the campus and is in desperate need of a major facelift. The new pool will be deeper to allow diving blocks for our competitive swimmers, and the surrounding decking will be replaced. We can finally say goodbye to the last of the Briar Club pea-gravel. The clay courts will be a new, low-maintenance version of the Har-Tru clay that will be installed directly over the existing hard courts, reducing the time and cost of the project to well below our original budgeted numbers. We expect the courts to be completed by October and the pool renovation to be completed in the spring of 2023. Please be patient during construction; there will be some short-term inconvenience as these important projects are ongoing. These projects are the first round of campus improvements and expanded amenities resulting from The Briar Club 2030 Plan. The Plan was circulated in January and was based on best practices informed by consultation with a nationally recognized consulting firm specializing in the country club industry, and from direct feedback from membership through surveys and focus groups. The Board has appointed a long-term committee of members to oversee the implementation of the Plan and help shepherd the Club into the next decade. We are at an inflection point for the Club as we fill these last open membership spots. After we hit our membership cap, our initiation fee income will be limited to new spots that open up as existing members resign (and I want to make it clear that there is no intention of further expanding the membership cap). As a result, a big driver of the Club’s historical free cash flow generation will slow down. Of course, we will have ongoing cash needs for future growth projects and to reduce our outstanding debt balance of approximately $17 million. This and future boards will need to consider how to bridge this gap and keep the Club moving forward, including the possible introduction of a monthly capital dues charge. The Club is also seeing a lot of cost pressure in this inflationary environment, most importantly in our labor costs. Nothing is more important to the member experience than great service, which only comes from recruiting and retaining great staff members. Since we are designed to break even between the dues we pay and the net operating costs of the Club, increasing staff and other costs will put upward pressure on our operating component of monthly dues as well. The Board will carefully consider any increases in dues, but some reasonable, gradual increase in coming years may be unavoidable. I look forward to seeing you around campus. Jeff Wood 2022 President, Board of Directors

Please follow these Club rules & guidelines to make sure that you and your children stay safe around the pool this summer! •

• • •

When no lifeguard is on duty, no one under the age of 18 is permitted to swim in the Family Resort Pool. All children under the age of 5 must be accompanied and supervised at arm’s length by a responsible adult when in the Family Resort Pool. If the child is in the water, the adult must also be in the water. Infants and toddlers must wear diapers secured by waterproof pants or swim diapers in all Club pools. Swim diapers should be checked frequently (every 30-60 minutes) and replaced when soiled. Please change diapers on the changing table in the family bathroom in the Wellness Center, not on the pool deck. Children must be 5 years old and capable of swimming to the side of the pool independently to use the low dive. Children must be 7 years old or 48 inches to use the high dive. No flips or somersaults are allowed from the high dive. Feet first jumps and dives only. Children 4 years old may use the pool slide, but must have an adult in the water to assist. Children 5 years & up may use the slide independently.

Everyone loves a good solo workout - sweating it out in the gym with music pumping through your headphones - but there’s a lot of value in group fitness, too! Our group fitness program is a fun and fulfilling way to meet friends and stay in shape. But don’t take our word for it! We asked some of our group fitness frequent flyers what they love most about class. Here’s what they had to say! “It’s more fun to work out with friends! The time flies by and then you remember what you did later in the day when you are tired and sore - all good. I enjoy Step & Spin with Cathy and Tabari has a good weights class. Those are my favorites! I truly come to classes because of the people!” - Becky Carter “There’s such variety that I don’t get bored with it. The instructors are great. Sometimes I wake up and maybe I don’t feel like going, but I go anyway and I have never been sorry I came to class. I always feel better!” - Barbara Beich

TENNIS & YOGA: Once a month, our tennis pros get together for a yoga class with instructor Emily! “We are having an absolute blast and it’s been really beneficial for our bodies,” says Brett Emerson, Director of Tennis. “Thank you to our fearless leader, Emily!”

“I love the 9:15/9:30 classes so I can come straight from school drop-off and get a good workout. I love Cardio Blast with Tracy on Fridays - she is such a motivating and positive teacher. I also love step, 20/20/20, and getting a yoga workout at least once a week if I can with Amy. Oh, and of course Heather’s Barre class if I’m not too sore from the other classes! I love the classes for the fun, welcoming environment, and it easily checks the box for a fabulous workout. And I can meet a friend or two along the way!” - Amira Hays “My favorite classes are DrumFit (20/20/20), Barre and Spin & Strength. My favorite part is laughing with friends while getting a great workout. There’s always a great mix of personalities and fitness levels which makes it fun. Everyone works hard but no one takes themselves too seriously.” - Barbara Carpenter “Group fitness is the best part of my day! As someone who works from home, I get very little social interaction. Group fitness allows me to connect with peers, share crazy stuff our kids say or do, and best of all, benefit from the good vibes from working out with friends. My favorite instructor is an easy one - Cathy brings positive energy and a smile to every class. That in itself is worth a million dollars!” - Steve Swope

LOTS OF LOVE!: We love this photo of one of Cathy’s group fitness classes getting in the Valentine’s Day spirit!

Have fun out there! “I didn’t have the same fitness or ability as the other girls, so I had to beat them with my mind.” Martina Hingis, Swiss professional tennis player A focus on developing tennis IQ & strategy improvement can provide a far quicker way to achieving better results than addressing skill level alone. If you want to add impact and effectiveness to your current skill set, look to maximizing your talents by honing subjective strategies aimed at accentuating your strengths and mitigating your weaknesses. You can be playing smarter and seeing tangible results sooner by being more focused on tennis IQ and strategy elements in your lessons and practice sessions moving forward. “In tennis, there is the forehand, the backhand, the overhead smash, and the drop volley, all with a different grip.” John Updike, author Grips are foundational, proven, and essential elements in the development of your tennis game. If you’re struggling to achieve a certain skill or to execute a certain shot, your grips are the starting point when going through a checklist aimed at identifying where you’re going wrong. You can hit most shots with unconventional or limiting grips, but unfortunately, you will also see inconsistency and limited positive results. The grips that your pros will push you towards are an attempt at showing you how to hit the same shots with far less difficulty. Grip changes only get tougher the longer you wait to change because you will continue to form bad habits and get more comfortable with any sub-optimal grip placement. There’s no better time than now to make the change!

fun FACTS

Rectangular courts have existed since 1877. Before this, they were hourglass shaped!

Martina Hingis became the youngest player to ever win a junior grand slam title at the age of 12 winning the French Open.

Tiebreakers were invented in 1965 by James Van Alen.
