A LETTER FROM THE
Club President
Update, the temporary interruption to food & beverage service will allow the final phase of the Master Plan, Phase 3 (including the Family Pool, Barracuda Café and Sky Bridge), to start much earlier than was previously anticipated. In turn, this measure will help the entire project finish many months ahead of its current schedule and ensure that all of our new aquatic facilities will be open and ready by the spring of 2016.
ROB SIGLER 2015 Briar Club President
I
hope that everyone had a great 4th of July. It was nice to see many of our Member families taking advantage of another fun holiday celebration at The Briar Club. For summer’s biggest holiday, the celebration ended on top of the new Parking Garage where, for the first time, some of our families decided to watch the fireworks put on by River Oaks. What a great way to end the celebration! In 2016, the 4th should prove to be just as entertaining when Members will also be able to watch the same fireworks from the 2nd floor balcony of the new Clubhouse. Simply put, the family holiday experience at The Briar Club is changing. With all of our new facilities in place, it’s going to be different and more exciting!
Most of you should be aware by now that the Board of Directors unanimously decided to close much of the Club’s food & beverage service immediately following the Club’s 2015 Labor Day celebration. The interruption to service is short-term, and Management and the Food & Beverage Committee (led by Board Member and Food & Beverage Committee Chair Shannon Huff) are working hard to brainstorm some fun events to help us bridge the time until the new Clubhouse opens for business in December. As explained in the email newsletter sent to Members just days before June's Town Hall Master Plan
Before making the decision to improve the schedule for Phase 3 and effectively complete the entire Master Plan by the Spring of 2016, the Board of Directors and Building Committee first considered several options presented by the Club’s general contractor, Brookstone. The two most viable options proposed by Brookstone showed Phase 3 completing either in the spring of 2016 or the spring of 2017. The Board unanimously agreed that completing Phase 3 in 2016 rather than 2017 was the best option for several reasons: (i) it moved the Master Plan completion date back to its original schedule, as proposed to Membership; (ii) it was less costly, economically, than all other options; (iii) it did not require any Phase 3 structures to be redesigned; (iv) it allowed the Club to keep the design and construction teams intact for the remainder of the Project; and (v) it provided for completion of the Master Plan in its entirety as early as possible. Despite many of the obstacles that the Board of Directors and Building Committee faced throughout the financing, design and construction processes, the countless hours that Members have contributed to the Project have produced tremendous results. Phase 1 is complete, and finished almost $500,000 below budget; Phase 2 is on schedule to not only be complete by year’s end, but also to be fully operational. Club management and our consultants are doing a wonderful job in this regard, and our new general contractor has staffed the Project with highly-skilled professionals, helping ensure the Project receives the highest level of expertise, quality and craftsmanship. Next time you meet a Member involved with the Project, please thank them for their time and commitment. I’d like to especially recognize Bob Frazier, Board Member and Treasurer, and Eric Ehsan, CFO, at this time for their work putting together the financial information necessary for the Board’s decisionmaking process. Their combined work has been instrumental in helping the Board stay focused on the economic benefits and disadvantages of its decisions.
I would like to recognize the Aquatics Department and the entire Barracuda Swim Team for their achievements this summer, including the Swim Team coaches who spent many hours in the pool working with our young swimmers. The Barracuda Swim Team won not only every single meet this year, but they also won the 2015 Club League Invitational. The Barracuda Swim Team earned and brought home all three first place trophies for Boys, Girls and Best Swim Team. What an accomplishment! Our hats are off to our Aquatics Director, Gina De PamphilisEixman, and her staff for helping all of our young swimmers realize their potential. A big thank you as well to Kathleen O’Reilly, Board Member and Aquatics Committee Chair, for her support and oversight. In closing, I hope that all of you and your families enjoy the rest of the summer. As we move through the next few months and into the Fall, Management will be sending updates with specifics about changes to Club operations and any other information that is related to construction. Thank you for your patience during this time. See you around the Club, ROB SIGLER

A LETTER FROM THE
Club Manager (713) 622-3667 | MANAGER@THEBRIARCLUB.COM
It is very exciting to watch the construction of our new Clubhouse as it rises from its foundation. Its completion is scheduled for this December and, if it stops raining, I think we’ll make the targeted date. Once completed, the new facility will provide amenities to greatly enhance our already fun and accommodating Club.
RICHARD A. LAREAU, CCM, CCE General Manager/C.O.O.
H
appy Summer 2015, everyone! It is truly a very exciting time for The Briar Club. Firstly, congratulations to our Briar Club Barracudas Swim Team for a second straight undefeated swim season. A big thank you goes out to Gina De Pamphilis-Eixman and her entire coaching staff for providing such great leadership and organization throughout this very fun season. Our summer Swim Team program is the hub of "Briar Club Spirit". Not only do our children develop a life-long love for swimming, they also learn sportsmanship and the pride that comes through hard work and achievement. I also need to give a "shout out" to Jon Diller, our Locker Room Manager. He and our dedicated Locker Room staff have continued to provide Member service during many interruptions, dust and chaos through recent phases of Master Plan construction. Thank you to all our Members for your flexibility and patience; in just sixty more days, we will being enjoying the fruits of our labors in the Locker Room Addition and the End Zone Lounge. It will be fun!
OUR NEW CLUBHOUSE IS COMING SOON!
4
I’m excited about our Member-focused spaces on the Clubhouse's first floor. The LIBRARY is a new space for our Club where Members may congregate and mingle with friends, play cards or board games, or sit on soft seating in front of the fireplace and read a book or the day’s paper while enjoying a cup of coffee or hot tea. There is also a small MEETING ROOM just off the Library where you may have impromptu or scheduled private chats with friends or business associates. Our family dining room, The Grille, has been re-named the BRIAR BISTRO. It has been designed with the whole family in mind, and will include a built-in buffet for our daily soup, salad and baked potato bar. The Briar Bistro will also be outfitted with cooking and carving stations. This will allow us to expand our popular, nightly Kid’s Buffet with healthy, cooked-to-order fresh fish, chicken and seasonal vegetables. In addition, we will be able to enhance our Sunday Brunch offerings while adding the flexibility for nightly action stations such as Pasta and Stir Fry. Chef Lance and his culinary team will have fun presenting new and creative culinary delights, bringing the popular dining trends of Houston home to our Club. Our new LOUNGE will be a unique and special place, bringing our Members together with two components. There is the BAR - a casual, "no reservation" section of the Lounge for mixing & mingling, enjoying your favorite beverage and/or dining selections, and watching sports or daily news on the Bar's television wall with your favorite people. Then there is the Lounge DINING ROOM, all dressed up in fine linens, where the focus is on food and friends and special family occasions are celebrated. I believe this dual-purpose environment will quickly become a very popular “hub” of our Club. Another exciting addition is the WINE ROOM, which is located just off our Lounge. Just outside the Wine Room are WINE LOCKERS,
which Members may rent to store their private selections of wines to enjoy when at the Club. The Wine Room is a Member-only dining and meeting space that will seat up to sixteen, comes equipped with state-of-theart A/V technology and will be your space for those special family or business affairs. Just outside the Clubhouse on the patio are the TERRACE, an extension of the Bistro, and the VERANDA, an al fresco extension of the Lounge, for those who wish to dine near the FIREPLACE or enjoy the FIRE & WATER PIT. I envision Members gathering to relax there while finishing their glass of wine after dinner, watching their children run and play on our generously-expanded green space.
And now, the KITCHEN. One of the most significant reasons why the Club embarked on such a dramatic Campus Rejuvenation Master Plan was our old Clubhouse's dysfunctional footprint, from the perspecitve of Member service - with inadequate kitchen facilities that could not satisfy the growing needs & wants of our Membership's Food & Beverage service. Our new Kitchen, storage facilities and back-of-house service areas will be truly state-of-the-art. The Club has invested in the latest technologies and food production equipment in order to simultaneously enhance our production of a wider variety of menu offerings and shorten production times significantly, using streamlined labor efficiencies, to increase and improve our service to Membership. Our new Clubhouse will be a new and truly very special place for all Members to congregate and enjoy. It has been an honor and privilege to be a part of designing and building this project which I think will usher in a new era for The Briar Club. I am very proud of this accomplishment. As always, your cares, comments and feedback are what makes this Club the best that it is and can be. Please don’t hesitate to contact me. My door is always open. Please travel safe and have fun on your summer vacations. At your service;
RICHARD A. LAREAU, CCM, CCE

MANAGERS OF MERIT:
Departments of Distinction at The Briar Club
Employees
Our Manager of Merit each quarter is usually a particular manager who has stood out amongst our entire management team and is deserving of recognition for their contributions to the success of the Club. This quarter, I feel it is prudent to recognize two of our departments, their management teams who have been most impacted by the construction of our Master Plan Project.
Kudos go out to Rich Andrae, Stephanie Kampf and Larry Zikes of our Fitness Department. At the beginning of this year, Rich and his team outlined the obstacles anticipated with the interference of our Locker Room Expansion, while charting new goals of increased member participation in our Fitness & Wellness programming. Not only have they managed through hot temperatures and noisy workout rooms in our Fitness facility, but we have also seen increased participation and enthusiasm in our Fitness & Wellness programming. Congratulations to Rich and his team (and to all our Members) for persevering though this difficult time. Additional kudos go out to Jan Vick, Mike Alcott and Alberto Jimenez in the Tennis Department for keeping spirits high while managing through unprecedented interruptions with construction on and around our tennis courts. Your adjustments to short notice interruptions while remaining enthusiastic has not gone unnoticed. It’s great to see everyone having fun through all the chaos, dust and noise. RICHARD A. LAREAU, CCM, CCE GENERAL MANAGER / C.O.O.

Javier holds one of the best positions at the Club -- Sports Bar bartender! He's served at the Club for just over one year, and has made many lasting impressions with his kind demeanor, great service, and killer cocktails! We are proud to have Javier on our team.

SHAPE UP HOUSTON!

(713) 552-2145 | FITNESS@THEBRIARCLUB.COM
Participate in this city-wide challenge to show your true Briar Club colors! Get involved by logging on to www.shapeuphouston.org or download the free Shape Up Houston app. You'll be one step closer to a healthier summer, a healthier family and a healthier YOU!
3rd Annual 1,000 Push-Up CHALLENGE
RICHARD ANDRAE Director of Wellness & Recreation Things are shaping up around The Briar Club as the construction changes our landscape into a beautiful new Club! In the last newsletter, I talked about how proud we should be of our Club and now we have a chance to demonstrate our pride! We have received a challenge from River Oaks Country Club, Lakeside Country Club, Royal Oaks Country Club and Houston Racquet Club to see which club can earn the most miles of physical activity during the months of June, July and August.
EVERY ACTIVITY COUNTS! It is not just about fitness but just doing something more active as well. There are over 70 activities like yard work to horseback riding and golf that can accumulate “mileage” in physical activity, whether here in town or anywhere around the world! It’s easy, it’s fun and it’s also a great way to lose weight by burning more calories. This challenge is also something the whole family can do together, as we encourage both our younger and older members to join as well. When it comes to wellness, there are no age limits!
REGISTER WITH SHAPE UP HOUSTON AND LOG YOUR ACTIVITY TODAY! Show your Briar Club colors and log-on to the official website: www. shapeuphouston.org or download the app to your smartphone (iPhone or Android) and start making your life healthier. To enter the contest, you need to join a group. Once you select group, you select “Fitness Clubs of Houston” then when it asks you to select a “Dept. or Location,” select “Briar Club” which is listed first (as it should be)! We hope to keep it that way throughout the challenge. As a participant, you will be assigned a number, which provides anonyminity while allowing us to track our collective progress! I will be communicating with all of you via email through Shape Up Houston's website to update you onthe status of the challenge. We need the help of all of our Members to really prove what The Briar Club can do as a community and a team! The contest runs through the end of August, and it is never too late to sign-up. Every mile counts, and we certainly do not want any of the other clubs to show us up without a great effort from all of you. The top four (4) Members in the “mileage” category of Shape Up Houston will receive a special dinner in their honor at one of the other participating clubs along with a guest of their choice.
JULY 27-AUGUST 6, 2015 Can you do 1,000 push-ups in ten days? If so, you can earn your name on the Wall of Fame in the Fitness Center! We'll post your picture and your top push-up count!
CHALLENGE RULES: Proper technique is required. Push-ups must be recorded by a member of the Fitness Staff and logged in the Fitness Center. Top man and woman will be picked!
OUT OF TOWN? Log your push-ups on the free Shape Up Houston app!
Congratulations
NORMA PEREZ!
SUPPORT OUR GREAT CITY THIS SUMMER! The Private Club Challenge is a part of the Shape-Up Houston Campaign to increase the overall wellness of the city to lead a healthier lifestyle. A side note, your participation will also show your pride in this wonderful city as the Mayor of Houston has challenged the mayor of San Antonio to a million pound weight loss challenge. In that challenge, every pound you lose counts. So not only will you be helping yourself to a better state of wellness but also the city of Houston and The Briar Club so we can win the inaugural Private Club Challenge Cup!! This cup will be displayed at the winning club until the next Challenge! Let’s bring it home where it belongs. Make sure your fellow Members are signed up as well, and let the games begin! If you have any other questions relating to fitness, please contact me at fitness@thebriarclub.com or (713) 552-2134.

Pilates is becoming increasingly popular as a cross-training tool. Fitness experts from around the country see more elite athletes, performers and weekend warriors looking to Pilates to complement their other fitness activities.
