ummertime is upon us, and the Club is in full motion. In April, we set a record for food and beverage revenue, and in May, we broke the record for overall Club total revenue. The two months combined produced over 1.8 million dollars in food and beverage revenue. This brings our year-to-date total food and beverage revenue to over 5 million dollars. Chef is doing all he can to keep menu prices reasonable, as the Club is not immune to overall inflation. The cost of some products has doubled in some cases. For example, we’ve seen very large increases with seafood, as the cost to fuel fishing ships, as well as the labor shortage has put a burden on the seafood industry. If you were to drive down to the Bay, you will notice very few shrimping boats at work as you might have seen 3-4 years ago. Since 2019, the cost of eggs has doubled, and the price of limes has increased by 313%. We are seeing inflation not only in food and beverage but in all areas and we are doing our best to manage those costs when those products make it to you. The great news is the Club continues to perform well financially and our cash position is very strong. The success of the Briar Club has put us in an incredible position, we are now on a membership waitlist. Congratulations to our membership director Linda Benson for achieving this goal. So, what happens next? If an equity member resigns, a membership will open for the next person on the wait list after they make it through our membership process. The waitlist is growing and it continues to grow daily. The Club’s exclusivity will continue to become stronger making The Briar Club a huge asset for our current members. Be proud of your Club! Recently our Chief Financial Officer, Dustin Wade, accepted another position in Upstate, New York. Dustin played a huge part transitioning our accounting department to what it is today. We wish Dustin the very best in his next chapter. Kari Foster will become part of the Briar Club family as our new CFO in August. She comes to us from Desert Horizons Country Club, in Indian Wells, California. Kari also spent time at Long Beach Yacht Club and Troon Golf. We are excited to welcome Kari to Texas. For those of you who haven’t met our new fitness director, RJ Pratt, please make sure you stop by and do so. RJ joined us from the Landings Club in Savannah, Georgia where he led a successful nationally recognized fitness program. RJ will play a huge role with the development of our wellness and fitness programs here at the Club. We welcome RJ, his wife Jamie, and their 1-year-old daughter Caroline to the Briar Club. In other staff news, with the huge increase in operational revenue, the Club currently has a total of just under 300 employees. For those that don’t know, our new employees go through a very thorough process before being hired. From drug tests, to employee orientations, our HR department stays busy ensuring we have the right staff for our membership. Thank you to all those that donated to Roosmery’s GoFundMe account. A total of 54K has been donated so far. If you haven’t, and are interested in donating to Roosmery, please contact our Assistant General Manager, Samantha Van Veen. For those that don’t know, Roosmery has been with the Club for over 24 years. She beat breast cancer in 2019 but unfortunately the cancer returned in her liver, lungs, and brain. Roosmery is the true definition of what makes a private Club so special, and we will continue to stand right beside her as she battles again. Enjoy your summer vacations as we look forward to an incredible fall!

he Club is in full swing for the summer, and the activity you see all around you is indicative of the Club’s strong financial and strategic position. We have tremendous positive momentum as we strive to meet the needs of the current membership and position the Club to continue to draw strong interest from across the community.
The Club is in a very healthy financial position. We have over $6 million of cash on the balance sheet, which will allow us to fund the current slate of capital projects and consider future growth plans without the need for near-term assessments. The cash balance results in part from our robust membership growth over the past two years. We recently hit our membership cap, and now, for the first time in recent memory, are building a waiting list for new members. The cash balance has also benefited from strong dining and event revenue. In fact, the Club reported an all-time record for food and beverage revenues in April of this year. We are also working to refinance the Club’s existing debt balance to allow for lower interest payments and greater financing flexibility. A little later this year the Club will break ground on a number of capital projects to expand our service offerings, and improve the look and functionality of existing areas of the Club. Our new pickle-ball complex on the roof of the parking garage is slightly delayed due to city permitting backlogs, but installation of the courts, new restrooms and covered seating areas is expected to begin soon. We’ve ordered a very attractive European red clay for courts 8 and 9, and continue to expect that project to be complete in October. Finally, work to renovate and deepen the front lap pool is expected to kick-off in the fall. As part of that project, new decking and green space will be added. The designs look amazing, and will transform that part of the Club to another “destination area” for members. I want to close this letter with a story about what makes the Briar Club such a special place. One of our longtime and much-loved servers is currently battling cancer, and her treatments have made it impossible for her to continue working. A GoFundMe site was set up for her, and notice was sent out to a few Briar Club members. In five days, just through word of mouth, the Briar Club community raised over $50,000 to help her. I’ll be honest: there have been some taxing times over the past year. The board has made some tough decisions and has received a lot of feedback from concerned members. That comes with the territory and is what we signed up for as board members, but it can also be difficult. Then something like this happens, and I am reminded all over again what an honor and privilege it is to serve this membership. I’m proud to be a part of this community. If you would like information on how you can help or to get the GoFundMe site, please reach out to Samantha Van Veen. Have a great summer. Jeff Wood

Barracudas!
We are so proud of all our Barracudas! They learned life-long skills, made lasting relationships, and achieved so much this year as they brought home our 9th consecutive undefeated swim season. The Briar Club Barracudas battled Houston Country Club, The Forest Club, The Houstonian, Lakeside Country Club, and Houston Racquet Club-- great season everyone!
L EAR N TO SWI M P RO G RAMS
We also wanted to recognize all of our Barracuda Swim Team Coaches for their enthusiasm, dedication, and determination to our swimmers of all ages. In addition, we couldn’t have a season without our amazing swim team parents who volunteered at meets, coordinated practice schedules, and showed up in the crazy Texas heat to support and cheer on our swimmers each meet. We thank you and want you to know how much it means to us and our swimmers! Thanks for a wonderful and exciting season. See you next year!
FOR THE KIDS: All group and private swimming lessons will continue throughout the summer and then into the fall/winter. Sign up for after school times now to reserve your spot! “The Briar Club is aiming to commence construction on 2 new Clay-Tech clay courts near the end of Summer ‘22. These clay courts differentiate from our hard courts, as they will be softer on user’s joints and bodies, significantly cooler, less impacted by weather, and will allow members of all demographics to further challenge and advance their abilities. We will be the only club in HTX with euro-red ClayTech courts and one of the very few sites in the US; Rancho Valencia in San Diego being one of the more notable sites. These courts will provide another premium amenity for TBC membership to utilize and will be a great asset for the racquet sports facility in general. We look forward to continuing to grow our offerings and pursuing further facility advancements.” -Brett Emerson, Director of Tennis

The Briar Club Employee Scholarship Fund encourages the Club’s employees and their children/ grandchildren to meet their highest potential through education. Founded in 2016 by a group of members, the Scholarship Fund exists to enhance the quality of the lives of the Club’s employees, strengthen their families, provide financial support in the pursuit of educational goals, and benefit the greater Houston area by developing an educated workforce. We partner with the Greater Houston Community Foundation (GHCF) to manage investments, administer the paperwork and application process, and evaluate and select the grantees based on criteria set by the Scholarship Committee.
