FROM
THE General Manager
DANIEL A.
MORENO,GENERAL MANAGER/COO daniel.moreno@thebriarclub.com
Hello Briar Club Family,What an incredible way to finish the year at The Briar Club. Over 1,200 attended Saturday with Santa. In 2021 we completed the fiscal year with 19 million dollars in total revenue. In 2022 we finished the year with 21 million dollars in total revenue. The Club is booming! In fiscal 2022, our food and beverage program recorded over 7 million in total revenue, and tennis broke a record with 1.5 million in total revenue, and we reduced our debt significantly. So 2022 was a very successful year for our Club.
Thank you to everyone that contributed to the 2022 holiday staff fund. We are very grateful to have such dedicated staff, and your contributions helped provide a little extra for the holidays. Our fourth quarterly Leadership Award was awarded to Mike Alcott in tennis for his continued leadership. Mike’s consistently positive attitude is greatly appreciated. There is no doubt that Mike has contributed to the success of our pickleball and junior tennis programming here at the Club. Thank you, Mike, for being such an integral part of The Briar Club. I also want to recognize our November employee of the month, Oscar Perez, in maintenance, and our December employee of the month, Sam Pennington, from youth. Congrats to both Oscar and Sam for a job well done. Another milestone, Roy Singleton from the men’s locker room, celebrated his 18th anniversary here at the Club in November. Marta Abbas, from the ladies’ locker room, celebrated her 17th year at the Club in December. Thank you, Roy and Marta, for your hard work and dedication to the Briar Club.
I want to thank Jay Hellums, Rachael Goydan, and Dan Carter as they end their board terms. Welcome, Meredith Marshall, Sergio Amelio, and Scott Dorfman, to the 2023 Board. Thank you to the 2023 Nominating Committee for providing great candidates. 2023 promises to be another successful year for the Club.
In 2023, one of our main focuses will be becoming data-driven here at the Club. As we implement these processes, please be patient, as we want to know where exactly you may be heading on campus to better serve our members in the long run. We will also implement mini-surveys focused on each department at the Club. We will use this data to help determine programming, services, and more to enhance your experience. More to come!
Thank you all for your continued support, and please stop by any time! Here’s to a wonderful 2023.
Daniel Moreno General Manager/C.O.O.Happy new year to all! I hope everyone had a wonderful holiday season filled with family and friends. As I have the privilege of ushering in 2023, I wanted to formally introduce myself to you as your new Club president. My family and I have been members of The Briar Club since 2014, and have loved our experience . Our children, (Zoe, DJ, Ella, and Elliot), have grown up here- whether it’s taking advantage of the Kid’s Club, participating in youth programs, or through special gatherings such as Bingo Night and Halloween. My wife, Emma, and I were originally drawn into life at The Club through the Tennis community, which has since grown into enduring friendships. As a family that has truly enjoyed our time at the club, I eagerly welcome the opportunity to help further build on the wonderful Club that we have.
I would also like to say thank you to everyone who helped make this year so special. I could write an entire book and there would still be many who yet remain unnamed--know that my thanks go out to you as well. Firstly, thank you to our outgoing Board members Jay Hellums, Rachel Goydan, and Jeff Wood, my predecessor. I would also like to thank Dan Carter our Ex-Officio who has served the last 5 years on our board. They worked tirelessly to improve our Club and the Member experience. They did so much behind the scenes that most of you will never know, and I’m so grateful for our time together. I would also like to welcome to the new board members: Sergio Amelio, Meredith Marshall and Scott Dorfman. I have every confidence that they will find their time in service to the Club rewarding and I look forward to working with them in the year ahead! Thank you to our committee members as well. You are so very important to this Club and we value your voice as an advisor to the Board and management. Lastly, I’d like to recognize our wonderful management team and dedicated staff. We are grateful to have a team that is both passionate and professional. The work you do never fails to amaze me. My fellow members, please take time to say “thank you” when you see great things happening on our campus.
In conclusion, it is my privilege and honor to serve our Club. I will strive to continue developing and aligning the long-term aspirations of the Club with the Board’s directives, understanding current issues and initiatives, and delivering the best member experience while ensuring the financial flexibility and strength of the Club.
Best, Duy Nguyen 2023 President, Board of Directors

2022 Pickleball Interclub TBC vs ROCC @ROCC
A Note from our Director
Players from The Briar Club and River Oaks Country Club came together for our annual Pickleball challenge match. This year, ROCC hosted TBC and we saw 12 courts (3 rounds - 36 total matches) of highly competitive doubles / mixed doubles PB. The match was extremely close and came down to the final two matches of the night. ROCC ended up winning 19-17 overall. The standard of pickleball play from both clubs continues to elevate each year and there is no doubt this trend will continue. A big thanks to Mike Alcott for organizing and preparing our TBC team to perform at such a high level. TBC will be ready to take the title back next year. A truly great event!!

As we reflect back on 2022, the only word that can begin to cover how we feel is “grateful”. We are so thankful and humbled for you and your families to call The Club a home away from home. As we look ahead to 2023, we will continue to strive to be a place of excellence, as we watch your families grow, learn, and enjoy life! Through every season, The Briar Club will be with you through it all.
word from our CFO, Kari M. Foster, CCM
Hello from the CFO and Happy New Year!! It has been about five months since I joined The Briar Club, and I am pleased to announce several significant achievements.
The 2023 Budget was completed and the first ever Capital Dues were initiated. As the club now has a wait list, Initiation Fees will not be at the levels enjoyed in prior years. The importance of this move is that the club is being proactive in growing Capital funds necessary to replace capital assets, in a timely manner. While the $40 per member per month ($640K Annually) does not completely fund the capital needs in the 2023 budget ($789K Annually), it is a start. Our industry peers charge well above $40 per month and they do not have debt.
The club refinanced the Master Plan loan with Amegy Bank in the form of a Reducing Revolver loan. Prior to refinancing, the club paid down $850K on the existing loan to reduce the prepayment penalty. The refinanced portion was $15,788,188.27, of which the club paid down $2,788,188.27 to minimize the interest accrued on the loan. This brought the total outstanding loan with Amegy to $13MM. The Amegy credit facility allows flexibility to draw up to $18MM, if needed. The Amegy loan is based on a floating rate of SOFR + 1.75%. In a rising interest rate market and considering the current information of the Fed increasing interest rates, we minimized the floating rate risk by hedging 50% of the $13MM ($6.5MM) with an interest rate swap at a rate of 6.2%.
We successfully completed the FYE 2022 Audit and have the Final Audit Report.
