A LETTER FROM THE
TIMOTHY PETERS 2014 Briar Club President DEAR FELLOW MEMBERS,
I
t has definitely been an
active year for the Briar Club as construction on the Master Plan commenced. Anybody who has been involved with construction knows that unforeseen events arise so one simply has to deal with it at that time. The Board of Directors and the Building Committee have been meeting several times a month to provide direction and leadership to quickly address these events as they arise as well as to continue to formalize the details needed to complete the Master Plan. I am very pleased to have such a talented team to help us through this process. The Board and I greatly appreciate the support and understanding from our members as we work through these issues leading towards the unveiling our our new parking garage and the building of our new clubhouse. The good news is we are on target and have included the latest Master Plan updates in this newsletter.
Club President
While the Master Plan Project has been a large focus for the Briar Club team, the Board has encouraged management to continue to focus on providing the highest level of service as we progress through the construction period and into the next era for the Briar Club. I hope everyone has noticed this increased attention to details, from snacks, fresh fruit and cold towels in the locker rooms to our wonderful poolside staff asking us what we need to make our visits more enjoyable. And by the way, the Board does listen. The Board voted unaminously at our last meeting to add clay courts at the end of the current construction project. The Board of Directors and management are committed to find ways to improve. Finally, I would like to thank the 2014 Nominating Committee led by Chairman Tony Padon for their hard work in determining the six individuals who will be presented to the membership as candidates for the Board. The six candidates are Alexander Aalders, Clint Bogart, Cletus Dodd, Margaret Funderberg, Clark Lord and Kathleen O’Reilly. Congratulations to you all. Please come out to meet these candidates at one of our “Meet the Candidates” events on October 22nd and November 5th. Equity Members will have an opportunity to vote in the upcoming club election. As I close out my last newsletter address, I want to express my gratitude for the strong support that you have shown me this year. It has been a pivotal year for The Briar Club, and I am proud to have been a part of it. As always, please let me know if there is anything that can be done to enhance your Club experience. Our Management, the Board of Directors and I stand ready to do all we can to continue to make The Briar Club your home away from home. It has been my pleasure and honor to serve as your President. I look forward to seeing you at our annual meeting on November 12th! Finally, if you have any concerns or issues on any aspect of the club that you would like to discuss, please do not hesitate to call me. See you around the Club, TIM PETERS

A LETTER FROM THE
Club Manager
(713) 622-3667 | MANAGER@THEBRIARCLUB.COM
The operations that currently create your day-to-day happiness do not happen by accident. Your management team is working diligently behind the scenes in concert, with recommendations from our various member committees to meet all your needs and expectations. We are all focused on doing the best and creating the most happiness for every member, every day.
MANAGEMENT TEAM RECOGNITION
RICHARD A. LAREAU, CCM, CCE General Manager/C.O.O.

all is upon us, so let the good times of 2014 continue! There is so much happening around us, it is almost dizzying trying to keep up with it all. I sincerely hope that by the time you read this letter we are enjoying our new Parking Garage. We’ve all heard and understand the saying, “the devil is in the details”. This could not be more true when taking on such an ambitious project as The Briar Club Master Plan.
MASTER PLAN UPDATE While the opening of the garage was delayed due to unforeseen circumstances underground, we are now in a position to forge ahead with the remainder of the project with hopefully little to steer us off schedule. Thank you to all of our members for being understanding of the inconveniences that you are all enduring while still enjoying your club during construction. We must also say thank you to our staff for stepping up and working a little harder to ensure membership happiness in all areas of the club. I am excited for the future of our club. Because the entire project is not anticipated to be complete until late spring of 2016, I think it is prudent that we all focus on the NOW, and enjoy the journey to our destination.

There have been some maneuvering of responsibilities amongst our management staff that I’d like you all to know about. Gina De Pamphilis-Eixman, our Director of Aquatics, will now also oversee all of our youth programming, as well as the operations of our Kid’s Club and Loft. Jon Diller, our Aquatics and Lifeguard Manager, will additionally oversee locker room operations in the Fitness Center and poolside areas. Rich Andrae is to be commended for his prior dedication and achievement in both of these areas. Mr. Andrae will now focus all of his fine abilities and attention to our Fitness and Wellness programming and operations. The rest of our management team in every department should also be commended for their member-focused efforts and achievements, which have created a high sense of satisfaction. I don’t mention Eric Ehsan, our CFO, and his accounting team enough for all their efforts behind the scenes, keeping all billing accurate and being so prompt when presented with member comments and concerns. Casey Newman and Chloe Trammel, our nationally-recognized communications team, are to be commended for our up-todate postings, e-mails and notifications that you receive, keeping you informed of what is happening and when. Chef Lance and his team have brought the club consistent rave reviews for the great food and service being enjoyed at all our dining rooms and around the pools. Thank you Patrick, Alex, and Joaquin for your focused attention to member service and special requests. I have to also mention all of our Locker Room, Kid’s Club, Loft, Briar Shop and Tennis staff. Thank you Jan, Mike, Alberto, and Sharron - the member feedback I receive in your areas of operation is rarely anything but high marks.
2014 MEMBERSHIP SUCCESS We must all welcome the 100+ new member families who have joined this year to our club community. Linda Benson, our Membership Director, is to be commended for her tireless efforts working with all of membership
towards this great achievement. The strength of our membership is the lifeblood of our club and it is you, our existing happy members, who are the Club’s best new member recruitment team. Our membership drive is not finished. There are two more years of positive membership recruitment needed that are critical to completing our Master Plan Project. Please continue to tell your friends, associates, and family members you like, about all the great things happening at our club. Send Linda their contact information or invite them to the club for a visit and tour. Your club experience grows greater when you’re able to share it with people you know and love. These are exciting times for The Briar Club. Members and staff alike are contributing to the great success we are experiencing today. I invite your comments, concerns, and feedback about your day-to-day experiences and thoughts for our future. Please stop by my office, give me a call or send me an e-mail. I look forward to speaking with you soon. At your service;
RICHARD A. LAREAU, CCM, CCE GENERAL MANAGER / C.O.O.

Master Plan
Update: MASTER PLAN PROGRESS
It's been an interesting journey getting this phase of the project to completion. Anyone familiar with major construction projects knows there are always curveballs that come your way, and we've experienced some that have challenged even the most experienced on our very talented and dedicated construction team. The good side of the story is, we will have a beautiful, well-built garage that will serve our membership for many years to come. As of the penning of this update, we're scheduled to occupy our new Parking Garage on Friday, October 17th. As we have learned so far, this is still subject to change. Please stay tuned for an update in the next few weeks. We will pop a few corks and enjoy a ribbon-cutting party, allowing all members a first look and tour of your new parking garage. The garage will be complete with the exception of the security hut and entrance gates. Those are scheduled to be installed in a couple of months, as delivery times on their fabrication are long. In the interim, there will be manned security in the garage during the day and evening, making sure that you and your cars are safe. NEXT: Demolition of our temporary parking lot is scheduled to begin by the middle of this month, making way for the construction of our new Clubhouse, with anticipated completion before Christmas 2015. The schedule for all other phases of construction is listed adjacent to this update. We have hired a new construction management company, Brookstone Construction, to take us through the remaining phases of the project. We know Brookstone will work swiftly and in the best interest of our Members to deliver a beautiful new Club and Campus! The economy boom in Houston has also had an effect on the project in more that one way. First, construction costs have increased nearly 20% in some areas since the planning phase, bringing the total cost of our project to $31 million. The Building Committee and Board of Directors have been working tirelessly behind the scenes to ensure the Club is in the financial position to complete all aspects of the project as planned. The Club will borrow an additional $5 million from our lender, and contribute an additional $1 million through initiation fee income to fund the entire project. As always, we welcome your questions, comments and concerns. Stay tuned for further updates as we break ground on the next phase. TIMOTHY D. PETERS PRESIDENT

Club News Chef Lance's DINING UPDATE
Wine Update A TRIP TO NAPA VALLEY In August 2014, our very own beverage manager Patrick McMillan attended a boot camp in Napa Valley, California, to get a taste for winemaking from the best in the business. PATRICK MCMILLAN A La Carte Dining & Beverage Manager In August, I had the pleasure of making my first visit to Napa Valley for a three-day immersive boot camp. The boot camp was designed to give myself and nineteen other club managers from 12 other states an insider's look at the Nap Valley wine industry through tours, panel discussions, wine tastings and seminars. Upon arriving in Napa on the first day, our group was introduced to Napa by Amber Minha of Napa Valley Vinters and Bob Biale of Biale Vineyards with a tasting of RosĂŠ from Napa, followed by Biale Vineyards's famous "Black Chicken" Zinfandel. Biale Vineyards has been a long-standing vineyard since the 1930s, when Aldo Biale made the "Black Chicken" famous. Aldo, in his teenage years, was selling produce and eggs along with his homemade wine. Due to the "party line" at his home, in order to obtain any of Aldo's beloved Zinfandel it could only be ordered with the code words "black chicken". Day Two was slated to be a very busy day meeting up to thirty wine makers, tours, tastings, and a panel discussion. We began our day with a tasting and wine blending seminar at Alpha Omega, led by winemaker Jean Hoefliger. Jean, from Switzerland, has spent years travelling to the most famous wine regions in the world to develop his very own philosophy of winemaking based on life stages, boldness, and feminine versus masculine. Next, we visited Peju Winery to sit in on a panel discussion with eight wineries represented as well as Master Sommelier Andrea Robinson. This was where the true insiders of the Napa Valley Wine Industry came to light. For three hours, the winemakers discussed, answered questions and shared opinions on Napa Valley, wine styles and shared their wines. The grand finale to Day Two was a tour of Beringer Vineyards. The tour took us into the 130year old barrel tunnels, into the amazing and iconic Rhine House next to the Old Winery, where over 130 years of winemaking is proudly displayed, and finally into the Hudson House for dinner. Day Three was already here, yet the best part of the trip was still to come. After finishing breakfast, we were broken into groups of two and introduced to winegrowers from respected vineyards, who were our guides for the day. Starting the day out on the Napa Valley floor with overcast and a high of 58 we made our way to over 1,500 feet above the floor and cloud cover to a 70 degree mountainside vineyard. I spent the day with the wine grower from Mt. Brave and in the vineyards he has tended to for over 16 years on Mt. Veeder and Spring Mountain. It was amazing to see vines so meticulously trimmed on such steep terrain and what terroir is all about. We dropped fruit from vines, pruned leaves, tested soils, checked reservoirs and re-routed a fence. For all the great experiences I enjoyed on the short trip, what I really took away was the hospitality extended by the winemakers, owners, winegrowers and their extreme pride and passion for the product they grow and produce.
CHEF LANCE WARREN Executive Chef / Director of Food & Beverage The Club's food and beverage outlets have seen record usage numbers over the past few months! It is exciting to see the membership utilizing their club and creating memories. We are in the process of launching an updated menu for the a la carte outlets. We are fortunate that you enjoy everything on the menu, which makes it even more difficult for us to change items, since "everything" is someone's favorite. With careful art and science we delicately update the menu to keep it exciting and "new". The menu we have today is one that was created by you, directly or indirectly. Your attendance and what you order dictates what we serve. The membership's palate has evolved over the years and the demand for healthier, more creative and ethnic foods has increased. The membership has asked for the use of the highest quality of ingredients, and we plan to continue this philosophy. The cost of food has greatly risen, and we are doing our best to maintain value without sacrificing quality. I am always open to feedback and suggestions. Assuming product is available, we are always willing to create anything you like that is not on the menu; or, notify us in advance and we will make your culinary appetite come alive. Happy Eating and Drinking!

It's not what you do...
IT'S HOW YOU DO IT! I often hear the questions: What is the best exercise? What is the best diet? What is the best way to lose weight? The answer to all these questions is simple: Commitment, Consistency & Accountability!
RICHARD ANDRAE Director of Wellness COMMITTMENT.
In order to achieve what you want, you have to make a commitment to the "how". Therefore, you need to find an exercise that is of some interest to you, whether it be running, walking, biking, swimming, or whatever "moves" you. Yes, it is more about "movement" than the specific exercise. Once you determine what you are willing to commit to, then decide on the time committment that you are willing to make in order to achieve the results you desire -- whether it be for health, fitness, weight loss or sport. Each goal carries its own time commitment along a continuum from low to high. Start slowly and gradually increase the time, then the frequency. Keep in mind that this is a long-term commitment! However, the benefits to your wellness and your enjoyment of an active lifestyle are more than worth the price of admision. THINGS WORTH HAVING ARE WORTH SACRIFICING FOR!
CONSISTENCY.
Consistency refers to two things. First, you do have to be consistent in your time commitment to your overall goal. Find a time that fits your schedule best and then honor that time frame for your wellness goals. Protect it consistently and the results you work for will be there. Secondly, this refers to the consistency of your workout -- especially your strength training, which is a vital component of your workout routine for a multitude of reasons (increased resting metabolic rate, higher percentage of calories burned during the day, decreased osteopenia and sarcopenia, increased self-esteem). One of the country's leading researchers on general strength training, Dr. Wayne Westcott, estimates that over 90% of people who lift weights do not even get minimal benefits because they violate one of the principles of strength training. Be consistent in your workout to focus on those important principles: form, speed, control of the weights, and muscle involvement. If you are not sure of your technique, please feel free to see me and I will be more than happy to assist you. THINGS WORTH DOING ARE WORTH DOING RIGHT!
ACCOUNTABILITY.
Diets do not work! The only reason they do is that you are accountable to them for a period of time. However, you have to ask yourself before you start a "diet" - is this something I can live with for the rest of my life? If not, then is it just a means to an end...and then what? It is about a lifestyle change and being accountable to something or someone to continue in that "habit". It is a dayby-day, hour-by-hour accountability that will challenge you to remain committed and consistent. Whether you use a trainer, another person or some form of personal tracking, having a formal accountability system is important. Prepare yourself for minor setbacks and get back on your wellness path using your support system. IF IT IS TO BE, IT IS UP TO ME!
TRANSFORMATIONAL TRAINING Put commitment and consistency to the test. Results are guaranteed!
How does it work? Meet with Rich Andrae and set a realistic goal for the month. Sign up for a month of training with Rich and pay nothing unless you meet your goal! Contact Rich Andrae at (713) 552-2134 or fitness@thebriarclub.com.
KAITLYN BROUSSARD Pilates Instructor "Pilates is not just a workout. Pilates is a way of life, and art, and a medicine." My goal as a dedicated instructor is to expose individuals to the depths of Pilates. I help clients become more functional in their movement, stronger, and more agile. I earned my first certification at the age of eighteen through Power Pilates. Since then, I have never ceased to be a teacher nor a student. Despite having been an instructor for 7 years, I am continually training and learning from other professionals in the field to ensure that I never stop progressing as a teacher. After completing my degree at the University of Texas, I became a fulltime instructor teaching at several local studios in Austin. At this time, I also traveled to Santa Cruz, CA, to train in the BASI Pilates (Body Arts and Science International) Comprehensive global format. This extensive training took place over a 3-month period. I am now applying for admission into a graduate physical therapy program. Ultimately, I want to incorporate my knowledge as a Pilates instructor with the knowledge I will gain as a physical therapist to help those who may be suffering from physical ailments. Let me share my passion for Pilates with you! Together we can accomplish your goals! (512) 481-8182 kbroussard16@gmail.com
