General Manager
DANIEL A. MORENO, GENERAL MANAGER/COO daniel.moreno@thebriarclub.com
What a great start to spring. Its great to see the resort pool back in action, kids running around and our beautiful landscape blooming. If you haven’t tried Blas’ famous “Blasarita” at Breezes, then you are missing out! Did you know we have well over 15,000 bodies come through the doors of The Club in a given month? This number does not include our 2nd story banquet facilities. We’re thankful to see all your faces around The Club.
Thank You-- Private Clubs are a special place, and that special place is only as special as the staff members that are willing to go the extra mile. I want to send a special shout out to two gentlemen that always go above and beyond the call of duty. Mike Alcott, our Racquet Sports Head Professional, is celebrating his 19th year of service to the Club, and Jon Diller, our Aquatics Director, is celebrating his 15th year of service. Gentlemen, thank you so much for your hard work and dedication to The Briar Club. If you see them around campus, please help us recognize this incredible accomplishment.
Construction-- We are getting closer and closer to beginning our competition pool project. Our goal is still to begin construction in July. As I am sure many of you read, The Club is now exploring the possibility of adding a 5th floor of the parking garage to our current facilities. This is exciting news, which could bring us more amenities and real estate, which is very hard to acquire around us. More to come as we begin the process of designing and engineering. Timmons is still on the schedule to get repaved in the very near future. When Timmons gets repaved the city will also be paving Saint Street as well. This will greatly improve the aesthetics and drivability of the roads surrounding us.
Racquet Sports-- We are working diligently to find our next director of Racquet Sports. While we do so, we are in very good hands with our Interim Director, Alberto Jimenez. This is an exciting time for the racquet sports department. I greatly appreciate all the feedback from the tennis community I’ve received to date. Your comments, suggestions and concerns are all being heard.
A Few Reminders-- Parking and leaving cars in The Club’s circle drive is not allowed. Also, if arriving and waiting for someone over an extended period, please use the parking garage until that person is ready. This causes major backups in the circle and on Timmons. Also, we are still having issues of non-compact cars parking in compact car parking spots. A suburban is not a compact car. Please be considerate of The Club’s rules, as this one is a huge safety issue. Stay tuned for our next Lunch with the GM event. The last one, held in February, was well attended and full of great conversation and questions. I always learn something from everyone who attends these lunches.
Here’s to a great spring and wonderful summer!
Daniel Moreno General Manager/C.O.O.

THE
FROM
Duy Nguyen, 2023 PRESIDENT BOARD OF DIRECTORS
What an incredible first quarter we’ve had as a Club! As we enter into Springtime- a season dedicated to growth- I would like to encourage everyone to keep the momentum moving forward as we continue to grow as a Club.
I trust this letter finds you well and that you are enjoying the many amenities and events that our esteemed Club has to offer. I wanted to take a moment to provide you with some important updates regarding the club's upcoming events.
Our plan for Mother's Day, taking place on May 14, is well underway. This event is a delightful occasion for members of all ages to gather and celebrate all the amazing things mom does. Further details are shared on our Club Events page.
I would also like to highlight the upcoming season for The Briar Club Barracuda Swim Team. This is our 9th consecutive undefeated year, and we are looking forward to making it a decade! This impressive milestone is a testament to the hard work and dedication of the team members, parents, coaches, and support staff. The Barracudas have consistently demonstrated their commitment to excellence, both in and out of the pool, and have earned a reputation as one of the top swim teams in the region. The Briar Club is honored to have such a talented and accomplished swim team representing our Club, and we look forward to their continued success in the years to come. Congratulations to the Briar Club Barracuda Swim Team on an outstanding season!
As the president, I understand the importance of effective Club governance. Our Club relies on a strong and well-functioning governing body to make decisions that reflect the best interests of our members and maintain the high standards that The Briar Club is known for. To achieve this, we have tried to established a clear system of checks and balances that ensures transparency and accountability in our decision-making processes. We are committed to upholding the values of integrity, respect, and professionalism in all aspects of our Club's governance, and we welcome feedback from our members to ensure that we continue to meet their needs and expectations to enhance the member experience at The Briar Club. As an extension of this effort, our Strategic Planning Committee has taken on the task of updating our governance documents. Moving forward, my expectation is that this will be an annual process to ensure that our governance architecture matches our management requirements.
I would like to thank our members for their continued support and engagement. Together, we will continue to strengthen our community and build our Club. Thank you for your continued support, and I look forward to seeing you all at The Club soon.
Best,
Duy Nguyen 2023 President, Board of Directors

A Letter from our Director
I hope everyone is enjoying the beautiful spring weather and taking advantage of all the sunshine! Health and wellness does not have to begin and end at the Fitness or Wellness Center doors. The weather is perfect for going outside to enjoy all the Briar Club’s outdoor amenities like tennis, pickleball, pools or grabbing a delicious (and healthy) meal on the Veranda. Just like the weather, our Barre and Pilates Reformer classes have been heating up! We now have a Barre class every day Monday through Friday and twice on Saturdays. Amanda Bennett, who already teaches a variety of Group Fitness classes for us, passed her comprehensive certification to begin instructing Reformer Pilates. We have since added in a 10:30am Group Reformer class instructed by Amanda, and she is available to book individual sessions as well.
Here’s to a happy and healthy Q2!

We welcome swimmers of all ages and skill levels to join us and help the Barracudas go for its 10th consecutive undefeated season! Summer swim team starts at age 5 and runs through 14 years old. To qualify for the swim team, swimmers must be able to swim a full length (25 meters) of freestyle and backstroke independently. If you are unsure about your child’s ability to qualify for the team, please contact the aquatics office and we can set up a quick evaluation. For those younger swimmers who are not quite there, we offer our Pre-Swim Team Lil’ Barracudas program for ages 4-7. For the full swim team schedule, online registration, and additional information please see the club website.

Facility Updates
• Hard Courts 4 - 7 will be resurfaced in July 2023 and existing shade structures will be updated and weather-proofed for increased functionality – this project will significantly improve the aesthetics of our tennis facility.
• New Windscreens for all courts will be gradually installed over the Spring season.
• Beverage stations w/ Hoshizaki Ice/Water machines will be delivered/installed approx. in May ’23. These stations will service Hard Courts 1-3 & 5-7, as well as the Sports Court area.
UTR Onboarding
The Briar Club is now a provider facility of the Universal Tennis platform. The mission at Universal Tennis is to connect tennis and pickleball players globally through level-based play, innovative events and a digital marketplace. Universal Tennis Rating (UTR) is a modified elo rating system that promotes fair and competitive play across the tennis/pickleball world. Players are rated based on actual results, not age, gender, nationality, or socioeconomic status. When you understand your skill level, you can find matches, hits, events, and tournaments where you’ll have fun, play competitive tennis/PB, and improve your game. All you need to know is your UTR!

Financial Updates
A word from our CFO, Kari M. Foster, CCM
Greetings from the CFO!!
As we move into the 2nd half of our fiscal year, the financial state of operations is sound. Food & Beverage offerings are top notch and in demand, from exquisite wine dinners to wonderful club events and banquets! We continue to see a demand in joining the club, as demonstrated by the membership waitlist. We also successfully negotiated 2023 health plans for staff to offer more benefits for a lower premium than the legacy plan renewal. This enhancement stimulated employee participation and engagement.
The club is now in its 7th year of operations (after the last renovation) and around the time when assets reach the end of their useful lives. We are making strides in planning for future capital needs. Every day the club is in operation, assets are being used. Whether it is dining room tables and chairs, computer equipment, HVAC/plumbing, light fixtures, or kitchen equipment, all these items have a useful life with normal wear and tear that will require replacement in the future. In addition to ensuring the club can replace assets in a timely manner, we are also committed to keeping up with innovation and trends in the private club industry. The competition pool, clay tennis courts, and pickleball facilities are just a few of the projects that enhance the overall membership experience.
We are compiling information for a comprehensive reserve study, which will provide visibility to how much is needed for capital replacement and improvement over the next 20 years. There are various ways to fund capital expenditures, namely, Capital Dues, Capital Assessments, and Capital Loans. To ensure that debt is minimized, setting the appropriate amount of capital dues each year is a prudent and sustainable strategy. There may be times where Capital Assessments are needed, but generally setting appropriate Capital Dues helps to build capital funds in a responsible manner. A comprehensive reserve study will provide data to support the amount of capital dues needed. Being proactive in identifying these needs will minimize financial emergencies in the future when the useful life of assets has been depleted. This strategy will ensure the "look and feel" of the clubhouse stays fresh and employee productivity remains high. There is no substitute for good working equipment to provide a safe working environment for employees, which enables them to meet the needs of members in a timely manner. We anticipate having the full reserve study completed by June 30, 2023, which will provide data for the 2024 Financial Plan/Budget.
I hope this newsletter finds you in good health and spirits!
Best,
Kari
