A LETTER FROM THE
ROB SIGLER 2015 Briar Club President
I
am honored to have the opportunity to serve as President for 2015, a year that brings historic change to The Briar Club. With the completion of the Parking Garage and the balance of the Master Plan well underway, the new year will see completion of Phase 2, which includes our new Clubhouse, Adult Lap Pool and Kid's Club. These areas have been in the planning for many years and have been worked on by multiple Boards, committees, and Briar Club staff. It's exciting to be a member at this point in the Club's history. I want to thank our members who continue to volunteer their personal time and expertise for this project. I also would like to thank Tim Peters, our past 2014 President, in particular for his leadership and guidance. Tim will serve as Ex-Officio for 2015 and the Board is fortunate to have his involvement for one more year. Also deserving of recognition for their contributions and commitment during 2014 are members of the Building Committee. They are:
CHRIS BOEKER BRUCE DERRICK CLETUS DODD SCOTT FRASIER JOE SANTAMARIA
Club President
Their teamwork and long hours working with consultants, contractors, and vendors is why the Master Plan has stayed on course. On that note, I hope that members are enjoying the Club's new Parking Garage. Its opening marked the end of Phase 1, with Phase 2 to follow this year and Phase 3 in 2016. Phase 2 is scheduled to be complete by the end of this year with the Men's Locker Room Expansion and Adult Lap Pool scheduled for completion by late summer. Phase 3, which includes the new Family Pool, Outdoor CafĂŠ and Timmons Skybridge, is scheduled for completion by mid-summer of 2016. The Board, Building Committee and Briar Club staff are all working hard to ensure that construction is as least disruptive as possible and I would like to thank all of our members and their families for their patience as we move through the most challenging year in the schedule.
Last November, the Building Committee held a town hall meeting to update members on the Master Plan's progress and answer questions about the project's budget, schedule, design and financing. The update meeting had a great turnout and was well received. Given the popularity of the meeting and members' strong interest in day-to-day management of the project, the Building Committee will hold quarterly Master Plan town hall meetings during 2015. I invite all members interested in the details of the project to attend and ask questions. Notifications will be sent out at the appropriate time indicating the time and place for each update. Three members of the 2014 Board of Directors have completed their terms and all will be greatly missed. First was Peter Petkas, who completed his second three year term on the Board. Peter's contributions this past year as Membership Committee Chair helped The Briar Club experience a tremendous increase in the number of new members. The number of members that joined the Club in 2014 is unparalleled in the Club's history and the Membership Committee under Peter's watch deserves a great deal of credit for a job well done. The Board will miss his attention to detail, cleverness and creativity. Second was Reid Wilson, who served as House/ Legal Committee Chair. Reid's perspective on issues could always be relied on and his legal experience and insight were instrumental in helping the Club navigate a number of legal matters. His many hours spent working on the loan for the Master Plan is also recognized and appreciated. I know the Board and its committees value his input and will miss his presence.
Craig Bunk, the third Director to complete his service, served as Tennis Committee Chair for 2014. Craig always brought a fresh perspective to Board discussions and many of his ideas for improvements to Tennis, Membership and Food & Beverage will be discussed in the months ahead. I thank Craig for his service and the voice that he brought to the Board.
In addition to the three Directors, Howard Cordray rolled off as Ex-Officio, ending five years on the Board. Howard served as a Director from 2010-2012, Club President in 2013, and Ex-Officio in 2014. I can't say enough about Howard's contributions to the Club. His focus, passion for the Club and positive outlook will be missed, as will his sense of humor that always seemed to appear at just the right moment. On behalf of The Briar Club, I thank Howard for his many years of service, especially the many hours he spent working behind the scenes on a wide range of legal matters. Replacing the Directors rolling off are three highly qualified members: Cletus Dodd, Clark Lord, and Kathleen O'Reilly. I congratulate all three and look forward to their contributions. All Directors for 2015 and the committees they chair are as follows:
2015 BOARD OF DIRECTORS Committee Chairs and Officers

A LETTER FROM THE
Club Manager (713) 622-3667 | MANAGER@THEBRIARCLUB.COM
The year ahead will have many more challenges as we build our new Clubhouse, add on to our Men’s Fitness Locker Room, build a new 25 meter Adult Lap Pool, a new Kid’s Club and three new hard surface Tennis Courts. All of this will be underway throughout this year and is slated to be completed by early December, 2015. We all know construction schedules are tenuous at best, but I also know our construction company, Brookstone is well suited and prepared to do all they can to deliver on schedule. Good weather during our winter months will greatly help in making our December 2015 date possible; let’s hope for the best.
RICHARD A. LAREAU, CCM, CCE General Manager/C.O.O.
A
s I pen this communiqué, it is a week before Christmas and I'm reflecting on our past year with feelings of accomplishment, satisfaction, pride and happiness. We have all now lived through the first phase of our construction journey, having torn down half of our Clubhouse and constructed our new Parking Garage. My sense is, the Club has survived, and in many ways is prospering with an inner excitement of anticipation for the rest of our journey that is peering just around the corner. There are numerous Thank You’s to convey for our many successes. From Reid Wilson, Peter Petkas, Craig Bunk and Howard Cordray who are all transitioning off the Board of Directors; to our Building Committee headed by Rob Sigler, who has now been elected our President for 2015. Tim Peters will now serve as the Club’s Ex-Officio on the Board. Finally, our management staff, which has successfully worked to anticipate problems and listened to concerns to ensure member happiness. Most importantly, we need to give a big thank you to our front line staff, the true heroes of the moment who have dealt with most of the disruption as they are tasked with providing superior service to membership day in and out. Yes, it will be a very Merry Christmas, God Bless us everyone!

I am very happy to announce to all of membership that as of the first of this year, Casey Newman, who is currently our Director of Administration & Communications, will take on the role as my full assistant with the title of Clubhouse Manager. Casey is wellsuited and prepared for this step in her career. For those who have not met Casey, she is a 2006 graduate of Florida State University with a degree in Business Administration from the Dedman School of Hospitality. While in school, she immediately showed leadership skill as a two-term President of the student chapter of CMAA (Club Managers Association of America). After she graduated she moved to Dallas where she began honing her management skills with Club Corp of America, working at two of their clubs, Brookhaven Country Club and Las Colinas Country Club, as Banquet Manager. She further honed her skills as Assistant Clubhouse Manager for four years at Lakewood Country Club in Dallas before she joined The Briar Club in her current role in 2011. Last year, Casey achieved her CCM (Certified Club Manager) designation from CMAA, which is the hallmark of professionalism in club management since 1965 and is the cornerstone of CMAA's member recognition program. It is a valuable and widely-respected mark of a manager's commitment to professional development and the club industry. Casey’s acumen is not only high in catering, communications, marketing and club administration, but she’s a true foodie and has a keen palate for fine wine. Casey’s responsibilities will focus on all operations surrounding the Club’s food and beverage offerings and venues, Clubhouse and grounds maintenance, and housekeeping. Her management partners are excited to welcome her in her new role as we all prepare this year to be ready as our new club amenities are constructed and become fully operational. Please help me welcome Casey and wish her great success in her new role. We are lucky to
have her on our Briar Club team.
The Club enjoyed great success this past year in new member recruitment. Many thanks to the hundreds of members who sponsored their friends, neighbors, business associates and family members they like, inviting them to join our community of family-focused fun. The year ahead looks to be as promising. Our Membership Director, Linda Benson, will be working with Board Secretary, David Mordy, who’ll be chairing our Membership committee this year. Together they’ll be focused on the membership recruitment needed to provide the club with the initiation dollars still needed to fulfill our Equity pledge for our Master Plan Project. We are currently ahead of schedule and have the goal of fulfilling our pledge this year. All of membership can assist with this initiative by inviting your network of associates to the Club for a play day or great meal prepared by Chef Lance and his team. Please reach out to Linda or David who’ll assist with membership information. As always, member feedback is the life blood of good club management. The only bad feedback is that which is not received. My door is always open, phone is on and e-mail is always working. Your satisfaction and happiness with the Club’s amenities and programs is the energy that sustains this great club and makes us better. At your service;
RICHARD A. LAREAU, CCM, CCE GENERAL MANAGER / C.O.O.

Master Plan
Construction Update:
MASTER PLAN PROGRESS
Now that sitework on the Clubhouse has begun, Phase Two of our Master Plan is progressing rather quickly! By the time you read this update, construction will have begun on the two-story Fitness Addition and Adult Lap Pool. Court Three has been removed to make room for the new Adult Lap Pool, and modifications have been made to the Fitness Center and Men’s Locker Room in preparation for construction. Both facets of this portion of the project should be complete by July. Underground plumbing and electrical work have been completed on the Clubhouse site. Crews are working to install pier caps and grade beams in preparation for the foundation to be poured. By late February, steel should be making quite an impression on our skyline! Work is near completion on security mechanisms for the Parking Garage. Once all cabling and installation has been completed, and the guard shack installed, the primary method of access to the garage will be via proximity cards. The Club will issue two proximity cards to each family. The cards may be swiped at the card readers located in both entry lanes. Alternatively, Members who have an EZ Tag toll tag on their vehicle may register the tag with the Club for automatic entry to the Garage. Guests should proceed through the Guest Entry lane to check in with the Security Guard on duty. Please be on the lookout in the coming weeks for more detailed information on garage access.

Safety Update: CHILDREN UNDER 12
Spring will be upon us very soon, and with it comes the return of Barracuda Swim Season, spring tennis lessons, trips to the Family Pool, and basketball games on the Sports Court!
Membership
UPDATE
The safety of Briar Club members is always our primary concern. With this in mind, we wish to remind our members of our "CHILDREN UNDER 12" POLICY, which is integrated into our House Rules to ensure that all Briar Kids are safe and accounted for when on our campus: HOUSE RULES, ARTICLE II, C: POLICY REGARDING CHILDREN UNDER 12
No children or guests of members under the age of twelve (12) years of age shall access the Club or remain at the Club if unaccompanied by a parent or other adult.
A Letter from the CLUB PRESIDENT CONTINUED FROM PAGE 3 To reach our budget goals for 2015, the Board of Directors decided to reduce the size of many of the committees, some by as much as fifty percent. I know that some members who have consistently served on a committee from year to year were not selected to serve this year, and some members who applied to serve for the first time were also turned down. Please understand this measure is temporary and committees will return to full participation in 2016. I encourage those not selected this year to volunteer again next year when the committees return to full size. Member involvement in committees is important in that it provides the type of critical feedback the Club needs to drive improvement, maintain excellence and adapt to change. One surprising change we had in 2014 was our growth in membership. The Briar Club attracted 108 new members last year, a historical high and substantially more than anticipated. I congratulate our Briar Club General Manager, Richard Lareau, and Linda Benson, Director of Membership, on this major achievement. Linda specifically has done an incredible job finding quality members and working with families interested in all the Club has to offer. Her upbeat personality and constant smile are her trademarks and I can’t think of anyone else who better represents our culture and our values. In closing, I’d like to thank Rich and his staff. The Club began 2014 in a transition period and the staff under Rich’s leadership did a great job improving the member experience. Casey Newman, Director of Administration and Communications, made noteworthy contributions to this effort. Eric Eshan has done a great job providing oversight for our financial position and we should all feel comfortable knowing Eric is working hard on our behalf. Gina DePamphilis did an outstanding job last year running Aquatics and Youth as well as growing a very competitive USA Swim Team. Gina is always available to help members schedule swim lessons and youth activities. Rich Andrae, Director of Fitness, is eager to help members interested in getting in shape after the holidays. And Jan Vick, Director of Tennis, with Mike Alcott have done a remarkable job as well, especially with our Youth Tennis program. I look forward to management's continued dedication and a brighter 2015. Happy New Year!
ROB SIGLER

LINDA BENSON Membership Director The Clubhouse Countdown is on! With one of our best membership years behind us, we are now focused on an exciting new year in 2015. We have begun the second stage of our Master Plan renovations, and look forward to the Clubhouse completion in Winter 2015! Spring is right around the corner, which means our outdoor activities will soon be in full swing. Now is the time to refer your friends, family and business associates to the Club before the Initiation Fee inevitably increases. Can we beat last year's record of 108 new memberships? YES WE CAN! To refer a friend for membership, please contact me at membership@ thebriarclub.com or (713) 552-2159. We are also gearing up for the summer season by updating our member directory photos. Please stop by the Security Gate or Admin Offices to update your photo, as your safety is our highest priority at The Briar Club.

Manager of MERIT
CYNTHIA WACHEKE Security Manager
Please help me recognize and welcome Cynthia Wacheke to our Management team as The Briar Club’s new Security Manager. All who have entered the Club from 5:00 am to 2:00 pm have been greeted by her at our Security Gate for over three years. Her pleasant demeanor and cheery smile are two of her great attributes. But her greatest attribute has been her keen natural ability to lead our Security team and work well with our management team. Her watchful eye, care and regard for all members have earned her recognition as our Manager of Merit. As we build our new Clubhouse and add to our club campus, our security concerns and needs will continue to grow. Adding Cynthia to our management team strengthens our position to be ready for this new growth. Thank you Cynthia for what you do. Congratulations and welcome to the team. RICHARD A. LAREAU, CCM, CCE GENERAL MANAGER / C.O.O.
Employees of the MONTH OCTOBER - ENDORA MIRANDA Endora is an important member of our Receptionist Team, though she also works with Kids Club, Banquets, H.R., and Membership when needed! Endora has worked for The Briar Club for three years. Her favorite part about the Club is that she gets along well with both the members and co-workers, and "treats everyone as she would like to be treated." Endora enjoys spending time with her daughters and grandchildren, especially her newborn granddaughter, Joii Ann. Something you may not know: Endora is also a talented floral artist!
NOVEMBER - OSCAR LAZCANO Oscar is our amazing Fitness Desk Attendant, and has worked for The Briar Club for six years. His favorite thing about working at the Club is interacting with the members and making them laugh. Oscar is married and has one five month old son, Aaron Luke. During his time off, he enjoys spending time with his family and playing basketball. Oscar is a car fanatic and particularly loves the fast ones - GTR, Z06, R8, the 911 Turbo. Be sure to say "hi" to Oscar the next time you're at the Fitness Center -- if he doesn't beat you to it!
DECEMBER - JUAN BENITO Juan is a member of our Maintenance Staff, and has worked for The Briar Club for five years. His favorite part about his position is fixing equipment and meeting new people. Our favorite part about Juan is his friendly attitude and ability to repair almost anything! During his time off, Juan enjoys taking his wife out to dinner, visiting friends, and dancing. He is married with four children and lives in Missouri City. Juan also holds EPA certifications and is an A/C & Refrigeration technician.

How We WOW! Here at The Briar Club, at the start of employment and at least once per year, all of our Club employees, supervisors, and department heads review what it means to "WOW!" our Members. The "WOW!" program has been the driving force behind our Club service standards, and serves as a constant reminder for all of our staff to ensure we are meeting and exceeding Member expectations on a daily basis. The Five Pillars of "WOW!" are:
ANTICIPATING NEEDS & WANTS BEING PREPARED BEING CONTINUOUSLY ENTHUSIASTIC EXECUTING FLAWLESSLY DOING IT NOW Feedback is critical to the success of our Club and the growth of our employees. Small wooden "WOW!" boxes are located at concierge areas of the Club (Reception and Security Desk.) Leave your great experiences, your not-so great experiences, or suggestions on the cards provided. Member Satisfaction Survey RESULTS Summary compiled by The Briar Club Board of Directors.
Club News
WHAT WAS THE PURPOSE OF THE SURVEY? • • • •
The Board desired an overall assessment of Member satisfaction and an ability to benchmark satisfaction in the future. There were a few specific questions that needed answers, i.e. menu rotation in dining rooms, clay courts, etc. The Board was looking for individual comments from members to aid management and Club committees in 2015. Rather useful input was received. The Board thought the survey in conjuction with the annual election would encourage voting. Member input is invaluable in both aspects.
FREQUENTLY ASKED QUESTIONS Q: HOW MUCH DID THE SURVEY COST? A: The cost of the survey was very low. Most of the survey development was handled internally by Members and Management. Q: WHY DIDN'T YOU ASK MORE QUESTIONS ABOUT THE MASTER PLAN? A: Most Master Plan items have either been covered by previous Member surveys, or are often too detailed to garner meaningful feedback from a survey. Q: WHAT WILL THE BOARD DO WITH THE FEEDBACK FROM THE OPEN-ENDED QUESTIONS? A: Each committee will digest the open-ended responses in 2015. Q: WHY WEREN'T THERE SPECIFIC QUESTIONS ON FITNESS OFFERINGS? A: Past surveys have focused on specific fitness classes and programming, however attendance has been low in subsequent offerings. Still, the open-ended responses from the Fitness questions coalesced around new offerings and general feedback on Fitness.
MEMBER SATISFACTION • • •
Chef Lance's DINING UPDATE
88% of Members surveyed were satisfied or highly satisfied with dining at The Briar Club. Dining satisfaction had a very high correlation with overall Club satisfaciton. 70% of Members enjoy the current frequency of menu changes; 30% would like to see the menus change more frequently. While there were no common themes within the feedback on Club dining, there was some great general feedback overall that will be reviewed by the Food & Beverage staff.
CHEF LANCE WARREN Executive Chef / Director of Food & Beverage Our Children's Events at your Club have grown in size & in demand compared to when I first started here, but the one thing that has not changed is the love kids have towards their chicken fingers and mac 'n cheese. We all know that the almighty chicken finger is not the healthiest choice for kids, but it is what they love and demand. There has been a heightened sense of awareness about health, nutrition and eating food that is better for us. We have introduced healthier options on the children's buffet that you will not see displayed, but we will cook them fresh and made-to-order. These items include grilled chicken breast, tilapia, and your choice of fresh vegetables. We are always looking for ways that we can enhance your dining experience without taking away what is comfortable to you. As always, we are open to ideas and suggestions. Happy Eating and Drinking,
CHEF LANCE

A few requests were made for additional drill sessions, off-hour ball machine availability, and breakfast. Club News Wine Update: BECOMING A SOMMELIER
James Broach SPORTSMANSHIP AWARD Ryan Wood, 2015 Award Recipient Article by Mike Alcott, Head Tennis Professional at The Briar Club With 25 participants distributed over three different divisions of the Junior Club Championships in October 2014, there were lots of tennis matches to be played. Many stories were knitted into the tapestry of this event as the kids battled their hearts out. Lessons were learned by all. The kids learned from the experience, the parents learned from supporting, and I ALWAYS learn from the kids and the parents as their quest for victory continues. There was more than tennis going on out there, there were life lessons being learned. The underlying theme during the Junior Club Championships is sportsmanship. At the completion of the Junior Club Championships, one player is awarded the James Broach Sportsmanship Award. Written on the halls of Wimbledon as the players go through the tunnel to step onto Centre Court is a plaque with a quote from Rudyard Kipling’s poem "IF":
"If you can meet with Triumph and Disaster And treat those two impostors just the same;" The James Broach Sportsmanship Award is earned by the player who demonstrates and exemplifies the utmost behavior on the court whether faced with triumph or disaster. Since 2013, this award is earned by the player who best exemplifies the ideals of sportsmanship, both on and off the court. Key attributes of this person include good ethics, fair play, and integrity. The winner is presented with the James Broach Sportsmanship Award Plaque, named after the former Briar Club member who lived his life as a great sportsman, tennis player, and just an all-around great person. Last year’s recipient was Knox Greene. The winner of the award for 2014-2015 goes to a player who showed tremendous poise when playing his matches, whether winning or losing. The character displayed on the court during the Junior Club Championships and throughout the year goes way beyond the lines on the court. It’s a way of life. This person is and always will be a champion, no matter what. That person is Ryan Wood. I am proud of all the kids in the Junior Program and the players in the Junior Club Championships; however, Ryan showed tremendous character and attitude throughout the matches in the event and throughout the year. He is only nine years old and has a big heart.
PATRICK MCMILLAN A La Carte Dining and Beverage Manager This March, I will formally begin my Sommelier examinations with the Court of Master's program. This program provides me the opportunity to work with several Master Sommeliers for two immersive and fast-paced days, studying and discussing the world's wine-producing regions, elements of service, and the Court of Master's Deductive Tasting Method. One goal of my education within the field of wine is to create a true wine program or culture within The Briar Club that represents the palate of the membership, with an opportunity to introduce or revisit different wines, tastes, regions, and varietals. I am also looking forward to working with our service staff to help them build their knowledge and excitement of the wine, beer and cocktails that we offer. The ultimate goal is to provide the memberhsip with a great dining experience during each and every visit, with supervior service provided by a knowledgeable and passionate staff. See you at the Club,

Pilates Showcase:
SIGN UP NOW!
This was a quote from a presentation I heard from author & motivational speaker, Patrick Snow. As we set our New Year's Resolutions for 2015, it is good to reflect on what this means in achieving success in our goals.
RICHARD ANDRAE Director of Wellness
63% of people who make New Year's Resolutions have infrequent success or fail to achieve their goals. While the numbers may be against us, there are still some strategies that can make our goals for 2015 achievable, and will help us to have a better state of wellness. If you remember from an earlier article I wrote, overall wellness is composed of spiritual, psychological, environmental, financial, social, and physical wellness. The top ten resolutions of the last three years all, in some way, encompass each of these "wheels" of wellness. They are: 10) Get Organized, 9) Spend Less/ Save More, 8) Enjoy Life to the Fullest, 7) Stay Fit/Get Healthy, 6) Learn Something New or Exciting, 5) Quit Smoking, 4) Help Others, 3) Fall in Love, 2) Spend More Time with Family/ Loved Ones, 1) Lose Weight. Here are "the numbers" to consider for achieving a successful New Year's goal: • 42% of those who write down a goal are successful in achieving that goal. Unfortunately, 80% of people don't even set goals, and only 4% write them down. • If you tell others about your goal, you are 50% more likely to achieve it. • 78% of people who set goals achieve them when they are accountable. It's time you tried something new! Remember, in the immortal words of Babe Ruth: "Yesterday's home runs don't win today's game!" Your Briar Club Fitness Staff can help you develop realistic, achievable and measurable goals and teach you to work towards them using effective methods. Hit one out of the park this year and let us help you! We have a new program for 2015 called the Resolution Solution. This program involves the following: • Initial constulation and written goal-setting • Wellness Program Development and design • Weekly follow-up phone calls for accountability • Monthly program exercise session or program design The cost of this program is only $60 per month (less than the cost of a one-hour personal training session). Sign up today by emailing fitness@thebriarclub.com and get on the right track to a healthier you!
NEW YEAR'S RESOLUTIONS GOAL BOARD! Put commitment and consistency to the test by writing down your Resolutions!
This New Year, get inspired and post your Resolutions on our Goal Board in the Fitness Center! You can post quotes, photos, or other meaningful thoughts. Once you reach a goal -- set a new one!
