umber of weeks ago, a middle age woman came to the shop enquiring natural way to help her son in mid 20s, from depression that he was being suicidal due to the relationship break down.

I suggested her that she should try a concoction of natural herbal medicines which consisted of a combination of Shichandra, Rhodiola, Whithania (Ashwagandha), and Californian poppy. The next day, she called me to say that her son, after taking three doses, was feeling amazing. He felt like he was getting back to a normal mindset and was able to return to work. I was overwhelmed of the outcome. Let’s delve deeper into these herbal medicinal properties. Shichandra is an adaptogen which helps the body adapt to stress and promote overall balance. This property makes it potentially beneficial to deal with depression and anxiety. It is believed to support the body’s ability to cope with physical, mental and emotional stressors. Two ladies visited the shop one Saturday morning, concerned about their mother’s mental state. Limited Screen Time

- Today’s world has addicting technology. Young people are using some form of electronics all the time. Parents may help their kids use screen time in a positive way that improves daily life by modelling good behaviour.

Getting Enough Sleep - Doctors claim that developing children need a regular schedule and routine to get the most out of their nighttime sleep. Your youngster will be well-rested and rested if deadlines and wake-up hours are consistently followed. Even on weekends!

Exercise - Regular exercise is a path children should naturally take because they play, run, jump, climb, and play longer than adults. You can get youngsters moving by encouraging them to engage in exercise that seems like play. Additionally, youngsters can start moving without going to the gym. Instead, they can go to a playground or park. Flexibility, strength, and endurance should all be included in the greatest kid-friendly exercises. Kids can learn about agility and speed from playing tag

and competing in foot races. Running, basketball and other endurance-building activities are beneficial for young athletes. Tumbling and yoga both improve flexibility.

Always Remain OptimisticEncouraging your kids to adopt an optimistic outlook on life can significantly improve their well-being and resilience. Try to celebrate small triumphs and tell youngsters what they can do rather than what they can’t.

Avoid Smoking - Your child is more likely to get asthma, allergies, ear infections, bronchitis, and pneumonia if exposed to smoking. If stopped immediately, smoking in your child’s presence is not possible. Don’t smoke in the car; go outside instead.

On Saturday, 22/07/2023 we held our dragon boat ceremony for Beatrice Curran (24/10/58 - 04/07/2023) who lost her battle with Breast Cancer.

In beautiful weather, we paddled out in our pink and purple dragon boats, accompanied by members of Beatrice's family. Kal-Ma-Kuta and Moora-Moora rafted up together as our Chaplain, Marilyn Cullen, offered a poignant prayer and blessing while we scattered single blooms into the wash.

During a contemplative minute of silence, the intensity of feeling the music, and the undulating floating carpet of colour, we pondered on the special times we've had together and remembered our Beatrice; whilst thanking her for being part of our lives.

Both boats, then paddle-tapped a circle of honour offshore, where we further reflected and farewelled, as we tossed petals and native blooms of all varied colours into the water.

Beatrice will be remembered as "a most kind and generous person who gave so much to others in her role as a therapeutic masseuse, reflexologist and principal of Bribie Island Massage, as well as a valued member of Bribie Dragons. She embodied the spirit of the club, as she supported all of us who asked for care and comfort through her magic fingers".   She was "independent, caring, fair, full of life, adventurous, a great confidante, and had a great sense of fun".  We thank her for the memories; all she did for us, and for all that she was to many.

Reduced performance and slower internet speeds might be caused by outdated router firmware. Manufacturers frequently release firmware updates to enhance performance, security, and stability. Enter the router’s IP address and login information in your web browser to access the admin panel and resolve this problem. Check for any available firmware updates after logging in. Download and install the most recent firmware by following the manufacturer’s directions. If upgrading is not possible, check the condition of all your cables and connectors. Your internet performance might be dramatically impacted by damaged or incorrectly connected wires. Ensure the cables are securely attached to your modem and router and replace any frayed or worn out.

The prize-winners in the 2023 Matthew Flinders Art Prize exhibition at the Bribie Community Arts Centre were awarded on Opening Night, July 14. Councillor Brooke Savige officiated as 180 guests, sponsors, artists, friends and BICAS volunteers gathered under a starry winter sky in the Centre courtyard.

Judges, Cassandra Lehman and Sean Leahy had a tough job selecting the works that merited awards this year out of the more than 180 entries in the competition.

They congratulated all entrants and stressed the awards were an encouragement to ALL artists to keep going and extend their art experience.

The first prize of $5000 went to Dr Jean Bennett, from Maleny, for her jesmonite sculpture “Hope & Despair’’. Judges were awed by its layers of meaning, revealed anew with each viewing and the variety of techniques displayed.

The second prize of $2000 went to Felicity Rutherford, from the Sunshine Coast, for her painting “ A Night on the Town’’. Judges praised her deft use of colour and precision to capture a place in time.

The MFAP exhibition runs until August 4. You can meet and chat with various artists each day of the exhibition, demonstrating their skills in the Gallery foyer.

And there’s a haul of more than 20 wonderful art prizes made by BICAS members and others in the MFAP Raffle, which is drawn on August 4.

The Bribie Community Arts Centre has extended its hours during the MFAP exhibition. It is open Tuesday to Sunday 9 am – 4 pm and also Mondays 9 am- 1 pm.

NOT THE FANTALE!

In a previous life – when I wrote a column for the Courier-Mail – I wrote an incisive piece about the loss of the Columbine lolly. This chocolate, sweet, sticky dietdefying sweet was one of my favourites and oh, how I mourned its demise.

As if that weren’t enough I now read that the fabulous Fantale – you know, with the probing quizzes about Australian celebrities on the wrapper –is being discontinued. After 93 years of faithful service to dentists the nation over, Allens has blithely decided to ‘delete’ this wonderful little lolly from our supermarket shelves from 23 July. And without a word of warning.

You see, I loved the Fantale, despite all its tooth-ravaging effects. Apart from its scrumptious taste and umami (that’s Japanese for ‘mouth-feel’), it increases the consumers’ knowledge about pop culture.

When I was running my writing workshop business (this

seems like a distant dream) I provided only the best lollies for my clients. There would be no Mentos on my watch! Oh no. Behold the abundantly overflowing bowls on each table, crammed with Fantales and other sugary delicacies, designed to transport the participants into a sugary, compliant coma as they absorbed my considerable wisdom.

Not for the first time I wonder: are these delicious items becoming extinct because I momentarily stopped buying them?

I remember that dark age when the ‘triple treat’ icecream became extinct. There was no warning there either. Not a whisper. Admittedly I was momentarily distracted by the drumstick. But if I’d known my favourite was endangered I swear I would have taken up a petition, mounted a campaign — or at least bought a freezerful.

And then there was the cheesy muffin. Anyone remember them? These were a breakfast staple in our household — wonderfully dense, cheesy, chewy, muffin-ey. My daughter (being a very picky eater as a child) owes her existence to the cheesy muffin.

Once again, I took my eye off the ball (er, muffin) ever so briefly. Sure, there were a few short, meaningless flirtations (one morning stands) with the occasional bagel, and it’s true I had a brief fling with raisin toast (café style).

But I came back. I always do. I came back to the cheesy muffin. Well, to the shelf where the cheesy muffin should have been. And tragically, it had gone. Who knows where?

Quite apart from my feelings of utter devastation and loss, these experiences make me feel like I am the one who’s totally responsible for the continuation of certain comestibles — and that’s a lot of pressure for one consumer, folks.

I can’t be vigilant and true to my favourites all the time. It’s just not feasible.

Currently, I’m avidly supporting the Whittakers Coconut Slab and our relationship is constant and mutually satisfactory. But who can predict an uncertain future? Sure my tastebuds stray occasionally to the Ferrero Rocher chocolate and hazelnut confectionary. Will this spell the death of the coconut slab?

Clearly it’s too late for the Fantale, the cheesy muffin and the triple treat. But we must work together to preserve the Whittakers Coconut Slab. Years ago I proposed the establishment of a ‘coalition of the willing’ to protect beloved heritage foods from extinction. How about an ‘endangered eats’ blog?

Baked Chicken with Lemon Rice Baked Chicken with Lemon Rice

INGREDIENTS - 4 Serves*

6 chicken thighs, skin on and bone in

3 spring onions

3 tbsp lemon juice, and zest

5 lemon slices

2 tsp dried oregano

1 tbsp parsley, chopped

1 tbsp dill, chopped

3 garlic cloves, crushed

1 1/2 cups long grain rice

2 cups chicken stock

METHOD - Preheat oven to 200C

Season chicken with salt, pepper and drizzle over 2 tablespoons of lemon juice.

In a heavy based ovenproof pan or skillet over medium high heat, drizzle olive oil and cook chicken

thighs skin side down for 3-4 minutes or until golden brown, turn and seal the other side. When both sides are brown, transfer chicken to a plate and set aside. Bring the pan back to heat and drizzle a little more olive oil. Cook spring onions and garlic for 1-2 minutes until fragrant, add rice, chicken stock, lemon zest, dried oregano and the other tablespoon of lemon juice. Stir to combine then add the lemon slices, the chicken and its rested juices back into the pan. Bring to a simmer, cover with a lid or wrap tightly with foil and remove from heat.

Bake in the oven for 20 minutes, then remove the lid and bake for a further 5-10 minutes or until all liquid is absorbed and the rice is cooked. Remove from the oven, let it rest for 5 minutes before stirring through the parsley and dill through the rice.

NEW TO WRITING? Tips & Tricks for Getting Started

No matter how old you are, if you have a story that you want to share then you can be a writer.

We All Have Stories to Tell

Stories are the foundation of how each of us makes meaning of our lives and of the world around us. Stories and writing do not need to be autobiographical. But each of us has a unique experience, a specific narrative that informs our words and our actions. That personal lived experience will always form the foundation of our life as well as our writing. The first tip I would like to share with aspiring writers is to understand your own personal narrative. And the best way to do this is selfreflection, to ask yourself questions, and question your place in the world.

TRANSLATING LIVED EXPERIENCE TO WRITING

Your writing improves when you ask your characters these same questions – build profiles for each of your main characters. These profiles

are separate from the actual story that you want to write but enable you to understand their back story. What are their motivations? What (and who) do they love and hate, or are completely indifferent to? This is a good way to start thinking about sub-text –meaning that lies beneath the surface of the plot – and helps you develop your ideas into something meaningful to you and your readers.

KNOW WHO YOU ARE WRITING FOR

Ultimately you should begin by writing for yourself. The process of writing is not always about getting published. It begins with personal self-expression. Once you understand what you have to say (share) and what it means to you, you are then in a position to start thinking about who will read your work. The ultimate test is that writing is authentic. While writing with a specific audience in mind can help you focus your work it is important to avoid ‘catering’ to this audience. Fashions in writing come and go – writing multiple

points of view and time jumps, for example. You don’t want to replicate your favourite authors, but you do want to be inspired by them – which leads me to my next tip.

READ!

I am often surprised by how many aspiring writers do not actually read – and especially do not read the works of good authors. When I was writing a paper on statistics (yes not very interesting) the first task my supervisor set me was to read The Great Gatsby by F. Scott Fitzgerald.

SOME PRACTICAL WRITING

TIPS

1. Write a one-pager that explores what is universal about your story. What is personal? What are you trying to communicate? How

are the different characters connected?

2. Understand the structure of storytelling (Look at the classical narrative structure by Aristotle). You have to know the rules to break the rules.

3. Avoid too much exposition – show, don’t tell.

4. Avoid too many adjectives. Good luck, and happy writing!

DONATIONS THIS MONTH

With the help of our supporters and the many customers that come through the shop we have been able to assist many associations on the island this month including our permanent assistance to VMR for fuel, Hospice for the Palliative Care Suite, and the monthly assistance with Foodbank and Fuel for BI Global Care. We have also been able to assist the BI Legacy with a High Tea for the ladies, this will enable them to get together and enjoy a few hours of conversation and friendship.

BI National Servicemen have been allocated some park area on the RSL grounds by the Sub-Branch, where they are going to erect a memorial, we have arranged to get them a bench, a time for reflection in the quiet grounds of the park. Bribie Outriggers needed new racing skirts for their Matahina race canoe which are required by law when in open water to prevent being swamped by waves. The coordinator of the BI Nature Festival being held in October for three days 20th22nd asked for assistance in hiring the local band Moving Parts and also the Jazz Music Institute for one of the events on Saturday 21st, afternoon/ evening a free concert called Sunset Sounds..

We are short of volunteers on Monday and Wednesday afternoons and all-day Friday and Saturday morning, if there is anyone who is able to spare a few hours please ring Stacey. It would make it easier for current volunteers if they had a few extra pairs of hands to help spread the load.

SHOP CHANGES

A few weeks ago we closed the shop early on Friday after a couple of days of 50% off everything in the shop. It was decided to do this so that we could change the layout of the shop, allowing room for more clothing racks, as we have limited storage space. It also allowed us to put a lot of new stock out and give the shop a clean, the art has now been hung on spare wall spaces and the art room is full of medical items and what we call the “Men’s Bric a Brac” screws, tools, nails etc to fill their sheds. We hope our customers like the new layout, and we thank everyone for their patience and kindness to staff during the change. We have also ordered a new gate as the current one has a few issues including rust, we do not know yet when it will arrive and whether we will have to close the car park for an hour or so. When we know for sure I will ask Stacey to confirm it on our

The min min LIGHTS

Outback Queensland is a place of many mysteries, old and new. But the most enduring of all, is the phenomenon of the Min Min lights. They have never been fully explained. There are, of course, learned theories from professors, unable to accept the possibility of an unnatural cause. Are they the ghostly apparitions of unhappy dead, or perhaps evidence of UFOs from somewhere else in the universe? Or are they a natural manifestation from the unique conditions of the far west of Qld? Many believe they are a supernatural occurrence.

Of course, these mysterious Min Min lights always appear after dark. They were first noted by Europeans near the nowabandoned western Qld settlement of Min Min. The lights seem to have magical qualities, sometimes following observers, even as they speed away in vehicles, while at other times, seeming to retreat shyly. They have become a legend of Australian folklore. Thousands of sightings of the lights have now been reported. They have been known to follow people on horseback, in cars, and on foot, sometimes for hundreds of kilometres. The lights generally travel about a metre from the ground and are often mistaken for the headlights of another vehicle. A recent accident near Boulia involved a car that crashed off the road. The driver swore that he had to dodge a powerful headlight coming straight for him, and he swerved

to avoid a head-on collision. Some rather spooked cockies have drawn their rifles and fired at the lights in fear. According to authoritative pub-talk doctrine, when shot at, the lights disappear, very rapidly, only to reappear soon after. It is also widely affirmed that anyone who actually follows the lights and catches up with them, is never seen again. A number of unexplained disappearances have been blamed on the Min Min lights. You better believe it.

A typical Min Min light is circular, about one-quarter the size of a full Moon and has fuzzy, moving edges, like a buzzing bee swarm. Min Min lights are usually white, but can be green, yellow, red, or occasionally after a few beers, blue and red flashing. The fuzzy orbs can dance around erratically left to right, up and down and back and forth. Occasionally, a single Min Min light can suddenly split into two separate lights. Spooky!

During the nineteenth century, People in Hay NSW often saw a light that appeared while travelling on a mail coach across One Tree Plain. No matter how fast men galloped after the light, no one was able to catch up. The place where this occurred is called the “Phantom Mile”, and is a legend to the locals.

Stories about the lights can be found in several Aboriginal cultures predating the European colonisation. They claimed that the number of sightings had increased in conjunction with the ingress

of Europeans to the outback. “Min Min” was the Aboriginal name for the lights, and passed on to an inn built in the 19th century, about 100 kilometres east of the town of Boulia in the channel country of Central West Qld. Initially, the pub thrived as the Qld frontier expanded and a small township grew up around it. With droughts and floods ravaging the western region in the late nineteenth century, the population gradually dwindled, and during WW1 the pub burned down. Since the time that the hotel was built, there have been regular reports of strange lights dancing through the night sky in the area. The lights are described in a bewildering variety of ways: a small, large, single, or numerous globes, changing in colour, standing still, moving slowly, moving fast, or sometimes following startled travellers for miles. When settlers first saw the lights, they generally interpreted them as marsh lights, explained in British folklore as ghosts of disembodied souls, sometimes referred to as “corpse candles”.

A number of the local Aboriginal tribes insisted that they were not of a natural origin. They believed that in some cases they were the spirits of stillborn children. They have also been said to be linked to an Aboriginal burial ground. A variation on this theme is that the lights first appeared after Aborigines were being killed by settlers. This is possibly a reference to the incident at Battle Mountain near Mount Isa in 1884, when several hundred Kalkadoon people

were reported to have been massacred.

Similar phenomena from around the world have been recorded. These are also widely associated with ill luck, evil and death. The earliest accounts of the Min Min lights by Europeans in Australia, generally had them rising from the cemetery behind the Min Min hotel. This establishment had apparently gained a bad reputation for encouraging stockmen to drink down their pay cheques, giving them no change, while plying them with rotgut alcohol. It was said that many in their subsequent inebriated state were robbed, and murdered. This embellishment added an extra dimension of spookiness to the legend. Perhaps the lights were the vengeful ghosts of these murdered men?

The first coherent written account of the lights came from Henry LeMond, a station manager who saw them in 1912. “During the middle of winter, I had to go to Slashers Creek at the start of the lamb marketing. I did not leave the head station until about 2am, expecting to get to Slashers well before daylight. After crossing the Hamilton River, I was out on the downs, when I saw the headlight of a car coming straight for me. Cars, I thought, though they were not common, were not rare. I took note of the thing, singing and trotting as I rode, and I even estimated the strength of the approaching light, by the way it picked out individual hairs in the mare's mane. Suddenly I realised it was not a car. It remained in one bulbous ball instead of dividing into two headlights, which it should have done as it came closer. It was too green and glary for a headlight. It floated too high for any car. There was something eerie about it. I ceased to sing, though I kept the mare at the trot. She suddenly stopped. She propped her forelegs wide, lifted her head, pricked her ears, and then snorted her challenge to the unknown. The light came on, floating as airily as a bubble, moving with comparative slowness. Though at the time I did not check its rate of progression,

I should estimate now that it was moving at about 10 mph and anything from 5 to 10 feet above the ground. Its size, I would say, at an approximate guess, would be about that of a new risen moon. That light and I passed each other, going in opposite directions. I kept an eye on it while it was passing, and I'd say it was about 200 yards off when suddenly, it just faded and died away. It did not go out with a snap. Its finishing was more like the gradual

was much greater intensity than that type of light. It illuminated the ground around it, but I was too far away from it to see any detail.”

While the mysterious lights continued to be a known - unknown phenomena, serving as a much discussed (and exaggerated) topic over many a beer, experts tried their best to portray a logical explanation. Professor Jack Pettigrew, who was the Director of UQ’s Vision,

In May 1981, Detective Sergeant Lyle Booth, of the Police Stock Investigation Squad, Cloncurry, was camped at a water hole about 60 kilometres east of town. Waking at about 11pm, he saw what looked like a car's headlights on the road. The Police Commissioner published a report of Booth’s statement of the sighting. He said that the lights appeared to be moving, but it did not seem to be getting any closer.

“I know this is hard to grasp, but that is how it appeared.” He described the light as white in colour, similar to the light thrown by a headlight. He went back to sleep then awoke about 1am and saw another light about 100 metres southwest of where he'd seen the earlier one. He reported that, “It was not as bright as the first light and had a different yellow colour to it, about the colour of a gas light which is turned down very low and is about to go out, but it

Touch and Hearing Research Centre, provided an optical explanation and data about Min Min lights in an edition of Clinical and Experimental Optometry, the journal of the Optometrists Association of Australia. He used his skills in the vision sciences combined with extensive first-hand experience of the Diamantina region of Western Queensland at night. He was studying an elusive nocturnal bird, the letter-winged kite in the region, where he encountered the phenomenon. “The Min Min light occurs when light, from a natural or man-made source, is refracted to an observer who is tens, or even hundreds, of kilometres away, by an inverted mirage, or Fata Morgana,” he said. “Named after the Morgan fairy, who was reputed to be able to conjure cities on the surface of the sea ice, the Fata Morgana has a real physical phenomenon, being caused by a temperature inversion. A cold, dense layer of air next to the ground (or sea, or sea ice) carries light far over the horizon to a distant observer without the usual dissipation and radiation, to produce a vivid mirage

that baffles and enchants because of its unfamiliar optical properties.“ In a celebrated and authenticated example, the Irish sea cliffs were seen floating in vivid greens and browns above the calm Atlantic, by observers on a ship more than a thousand kilometres away. The Professor also said, “Wonderful during the day, such Fata Morgana can be terrifying at night when a single light source gives no hint that it is actually part of a mirage emanating from a great distance. Even hardened Outback observers can break down when they are unable to interpret the unusual optical properties of the light in terms of their own, very different, past experiences. The unusual terrain of the Channel Country makes the favourable atmospheric conditions more likely, while its isolation increases the impact of a single light source, since the observer knows that it cannot be produced locally but sees it apparently there in front.” The Professor went on, “… some people would prefer not to have the Min Min’s mystique probed by city slickers. I apologise to them. However, knowing more about the unusual weather conditions responsible, could improve one’s chances of seeing it.” He later added, “Increased knowledge has certainly not lessened my own wonderment at the phenomenon on those infrequent occasions.”

OK, good try professor. I prefer the story that it is the ghosts of those who have passed on in terrible deaths, still hovering in the atmosphere to remind the living of the bad deeds of the past…

Despite the inconsistencies among, and within, reported sightings, the scepticism of scientists and the existence of a number of possible natural explanations, the notion that the Min Min lights are supernatural in origin lives on. Tourism promoters refer to them, and ufologists investigate them. Whatever their origin, the lights have become one of Australia's most persistent tales of the unexplained.

INGREDIENTS

2 tbsps coconut oil (you can use butter if you prefer)

1 tablespoon coconut sugar (swap for brown sugar if you want to)

2 tbsps honey (rice malt syrup if you would like these to be vegan)

4 cups cornflakes (if you want these treats to be gluten free, buy gluten free cornflakes)

1 cup shredded coconut

1 cup sultanas

INSTRUCTIONS

• Preheat your oven to 150º degrees celsius.

• Combine the cornflakes, shredded coconut and sultanas in a bowl.

• In a small saucepan heat the sugar, honey and coconut oil until frothy.

• Add the hot ingredients to the dry ingredients. Mix well.

• Spoon into 15 cupcake patty papers, ensuring you get some sultanas in each one (they may have fallen to the bottom of the mix).

• Bake for 10 minutes, then remove from the oven.

• Allow to cool before eating. (some sultanas may blow up in the oven in size, but will deflate again once cool).

Notes: Once cool, keep in an airtight container in the fridge for 7 days.

Bribie Dragons

Bribie Dragons have been busy this past fortnight. They attended the fundraising BIGGEST MORNING TEA for Cancer Research at the spectacular Ulurayma Retreat, Wamuran. The venue had a panoramic view of the Glasshouse Mountains, lush gardens with exquisite mosaics and appetizing home-created titbits. Our "Pinkaboutit" girls were encouraged to engage in some handson pottery experience amidst great company. It was a very worthwhile fundraising success. The locale was truly beautiful, so secluded & peaceful with many creative artworks to be found all

over the impressive gardens. Later, “seventeen of our Bribie Pink Dragons gathered at 'The Beach House' at Beachmere on Saturday 17th, "Assembly Day". This was to assist the Zonta Birthing Kit project, instigated in 1999, to pack birthing kits for use in third-world countries. These kits, devised by Joy Hazy, an Adelaide doctor, help to provide a clean space & implements for women giving birth. A kit contains a plastic sheet, latex gloves, gauze swabs, a razor blade to cut the cord, strings to tie off, & soap. The premise is that women in developing countries could survive birth

in far greater numbers if they had access to a few basic, clean items. With continual conversation and deft fingering, in 4 hours we collectively managed to reach the goal of packaging 1600 kits! However, the break for a home-baked morning tea and lunch was most appreciated." In contemplation, I think we all felt very lucky to be living in Australia and were most happy to work with the Zonta club.!!

I know Cost of Living is tough right now. Globally, inflation is impacting everything from petrol to rent, electricity, insurance and bills.

Our government recognises the stress this is causing and we are doing what we can to help.

That’s why every household will get $550 off their energy bills. This will be automatically applied on your next full bill after 1 July. The rebate will come off in equal instalments each billing cycle.

For most people, this will be $137.50 off each quarterly bill. You still get the rebate if you have solar.

If your energy bills are less than the rebate amount, then any additional funds will show up as a credit.

Seniors, Pensioner and Concession Card holders are

eligible for up to $1,072 off their bills – which is $700 on top of the existing $372 Queensland Electricity Rebate. You can check your eligibility online: https://www.qld.gov. au/community/cost-of-livingsupport/concessions/energyconcessions/cost-of-living-rebate

If you currently receive the $372 rebate, the additional $700 will be automatically applied to your bills in equal instalments. Remember, you need to register your Seniors, Pensioner or Concession Card with your energy retailer to receive the $1,072 rebate.

Mealy Bugs are small sap-sucking pests that are often found in warmer climates. They are soft-bodied, wingless and are covered in white, protective wax and leave behind dry looking, damaged grass blades. They produce Honeydew which can cause mould growth on plants, attracts other pests, and can prevent your grass from photosynthesizing. They tend to hide in the moist and protected parts of a plant, usually the dense foliage or underside of leaves, and can have the appearance of small spots of cotton.

Mealy Bugs reach maturity within 1-3 months of hatching, and adult females can lay 300-600 eggs which will hatch within 1-3 weeks. If these pests aren’t taken care of quickly, they can overrun your lawn!

Option 1. Mealy Bugs are hard to eradicate, generally needing to be manually removed with rubbing alcohol from each blade of grass. This daunting task could take days or weeks depending on your yard size.

Wed 12th July 2023

26 members and partners attended the VMR Function to watch Game 3 of the NRL State of Origin Series which was held Sydney. The Social Committee Team of Kelly Langworthy, Sharyn Giles, Sheryl & John Traill, and Brenda Allardyce provided the usual “Footy Fare” of pies, hot dogs, toasties, and hot chips. The Woolies pies were a hit with plain, chicken and camembert, and chunk beef with mushroom to choose from. Ice-creams in a waffle cone were also available at half time. Tim and Pauline Amourous manned the bar and ensured drinks were available at our usual great prices. Game 3 was won by NSW Blues who led at half time by 18-10, unfortunately the Maroons didn’t add to this score and ended losing 24-10. However, the Maroons winning the series 2-1.

Bream have been above average in size and in good numbers throughout Moreton Bay. I managed my own PB at Tangalooma with this monster 45cm bream weighing in at 1.315kg which was just shy of 2.9 pounds in the old scale. I caught it on an 8lb main mono line with an 8lb flouro carbon leader, about one meter long, size 1 round sinker and a single suicide hook. A mullet cube was used for bait. Just remember to berley with bread and older fish frames. If you don’t get a bite within 30min move spots and try again.

Richard Caldararo has been finding regular flathead up to 65cm on the top of the tide, using pilchards and soft plastics, drifting the drop-offs and casting ahead with plastics to cover more ground.

Woorim Beach has been hit and miss, finding only one fish (a dart) on Saturday with no surface action up to Mermaid Lagoon. Sunday was the complete opposite with tuna busting up to 100 metres offshore for about a 10 km run. Dart was plentiful but just under size. Azz Trabelsi managed a nice mix catch off the beach next to the Army bunkers using a 6-pound line on a 6-foot, whippy rod with yabbies and pilchard strips for bait. Well done, Azz.

Family

Tailor schools are back to normal migration with the earlier big school now moved up the coast.

Tailor move into the passage for a couple of days feeding up on large bait schools until nature calls on them to migrate north, mainly when the temperature drops about half a degree.

This time of the year they are not carry eggs and still have some growing to do until October, when the majority of tailor start to spawn off Frazer Island. Over the last couple of years, they have also been spawning off Moreton Island with 70cm specimens not uncommon.

Birds, bust-ups and even burley are a couple of ways to find these highly sort after sport fish which are great eating grilled, pan-fried and smoked.

Always look after your catch with saltwater slurry, bleed and handled carefully not to bruise the flesh.

Just a reminder 20 bag limit on Tailor with a minimum of 35cm.

Offshore, Jhiel Pepene has managed an awesome solo effort, casting surface lures off Cape Moreton to play, gaff and land this 28.6kg Spanish mackerel. His Stick bait has definitely seen better days but I am sure it will still manage another fish or two. Nice catch Jhiel.

Remember to log in with VMR when heading out and let someone know your plans. Non-members are also encouraged to log on / off and should consider membership as you never know when you may need a tow.

As per the QLD Fisheries rules on Snapper and Pearl Perch, there is a current closed season between 15 July to 15 August. Just a reminder though when the close season finishes, you can only have 4 fish per person for both species, and for snapper, only one over 70cm.

Fishy Facts - Lures Vs. Bait Part 2

Just as artificial powerbaits have made baitfishing in freshwater more ‘novice’, so has the use of artificial baits, or soft plastics made lure fishing less technical for novice lure anglers. As mentioned earlier, many of these soft plastic ‘baits’ blur the line between bait and lure, many of them are scented and edible, and can actually be fished statically so fish pick them up and chew on them. The upside of lure fishing is that it is generally a ‘cleaner’ fishing method where there isn’t any necessity to collect, use or store ‘smelly’ baits. A wide variety of lures can be collected and easily stored in convenient tackle boxes and carried about and used whenever required without

the need to ‘buy or collect’ fresh bait before every fishing trip.

The downside of lure fishing is that it can be expensive if you start using (and collecting) intricate hard-bodied swimming lures that can be lost on snags and fish etc. Using soft plastic lures is far more economical (and just as effective) as the jig heads and the soft plastic tails are less intricate in their manufacture and therefore less expensive.

The same basic, light to medium spinning rod, reel and line outfit is perfectly suitable for lure casting (hard and soft) for most bread and butter, salt or freshwater fish species. A straight monofilament line to lure rig is perfectly

adequate to get started and catch fish.

To summarise, there are no hard and fast rules as to when one method is better than the other. If you’re taking the kids on holidays to the beach, and want to have fun and catch a few, then my suggestion would be to start them off using bait to chase bream and flathead etc. It’s possible to set up a few rods and keep all the children close at hand around the water while fishing from the beach or jetties. Safety around water should be a key factor where kids are involved. As they grow, and if they show a keen interest in fishing, then getting them started using soft plastic or basic lures and chasing easily caught fish such as flathead in

saltwater or redfin in fresh, can kick-start their lifetime fishing adventures.

If you’re just after a feed of fish, then you can’t go past fresh bait and local fishing advice. If you’re more interested in moving about and putting the odds back in the fish’s favour, making your fishing more challenging, and releasing more fish than you keep, then lure fishing is probably for you.

No matter what method you choose, make it enjoyable, fish responsibly, take your rubbish home with you, don’t leave discarded fishing lines, hooks or plastic packaging lying around, and most importantly, limit your kill.

There are so many places to adventure to, no matter whether you’re going for a short trip or for several months and travelling in a van is just that much more enjoyable!

Whilst you might be excited to jump in your new van and head off, there are a few things you should plan before taking off. We’ve put together a checklist to help you not forget the important things and we’ve included a few hints and tips from the pros.

CHECKLIST

• Ensure you have a fire extinguisher and fire blanket on board.

• Make sure you have a well-equipped toolbox including a mallet, screwdrivers, tent pegs and clothes pegs, a long power cord, a power board, guy ropes (they can be used as a makeshift clothesline) and annexe matting.

• Citronella candles, mozzie repellent and sunscreen

• 12V chargers for any of your electrical items (don’t laugh, we’ve all forgotten them!)

• Some vans don’t have a toilet or shower. If this is yours take a 12V shower (or Hot Water on Demand if you want the very best) and a portable toilet for when you’re in remote areas with no facilities

KITCHENWARE

• Take some small-sized containers and plastic wrap to keep leftovers and any open items in the fridge.

• If you love to cook over an open fire (when permitted) include a jaffle iron and camp oven

• Gas lighter and matches.

• Torches and spare batteries

• Take a spare portable stove or BBQ to cook outside; fish can be especially smelly to cook and if you cook it outside the smell won’t go through your bedding, clothes and linen

FOOD

(Just a few items that sometimes get forgotten)

• Salt and pepper

• Sauces – tomato, BBQ, mayo etc.

• Tea, coffee and sugar

• Rice, pasta and oil

• Canned food is great as space is limited when you have a small fridge. Try corn, peas and fruit.

• Long-life milk

CLOTHING MUST-HAVES

• No matter how warm the weather is, always take at least one tracksuit for those cooler nights or an unexpected change.

• One good outfit for special occasions

• Hat and beanie

• Swimmers

• Sandals, hikers, outdoor slippers, Crocs or a pair of thongs to wear to and from the shower.

RIGHT BEFORE YOU GO.

• It’s a good idea to have your vehicle serviced before you go, especially if you’ll be away for a long period of time.

• Check that your gas bottles are full, securely fastened and turned off.

• Make sure the fridge door is locked and

don’t leave anything out on the benches or shelves as they will get thrown around during transit.

• Lower your TV antenna (if it’s not fixed in place)

• Attach your caravan mirrors ensuring they are firmly secured and make sure you can see adequately before moving off.

• Ask someone to stand outside and check that the brake lights, indicators and headlights are all operational

• Make sure all the windows and hatches are latched.

HANDY HINTS & TIPS FROM THE PROS

• Line your kitchen cupboards & drawers with non-stick rubber matting to stop cutlery and kitchenware from moving during travel.

• Have a second set of everything that stays in the van so that all you need to pack for each trip is your food and clothes.

• Before you go transfer all your food items into plastic containers to save any broken glass in transit

• Carry a second cast iron frying pan that can be put directly onto an open fire. This saves your good one.

• Keep a dirty clothes bag so you can carry your laundry to and from the laundry mat.

• Take a large plastic storage box with you for all your tent pegs, annexe matting, rope and chocks, as you may need to pack up when wet.

Elké Swain caught this 80cm flathead off a lure when fishing to the left of Little Goat Island. It was safely returned as it was over the legal limit. Unfortunately, Elké wasn’t aware of how to hold it properly, but she does know now, so next time she said she will do it right! Elke’s first catch on a lure 15mins prior was 37cm and she had to put it back and on her second go she caught this beauty. Elké said,

“My heart was racing for about 15mins afterwards, I was so excited and exhausted, she put up a good fight.”

The sign at the start of the Bribie Island bridge says, “Welcome to Bribie – a Fauna and Flora Sanctuary.” Oh no, it’s NOT – these are the “Killing Fields”.  We have just phoned in our ninth Kangaroo roadkill, 2 of which were mothers and Joey’s. All these road kills were on either Sunderland Drive or Avon Avenue, and we know there is far more carnage elsewhere on the island.

Let’s stop all the BS and face up to reality.... it’s time to fence the National Parks.

What does the Federal Government do? It collects our tax money and distributes it to State and Territory governments who then distribute it to the Local Councils. The Local Councils’ work affects the community more directly than the Federal or State Government’s work.

The DISADVANTAGED Aboriginal people, as I understand it, are those suffering frequent incarceration, domestic violence, homelessness, and lack of employment. I don’t have the answers to all of these problems but I believe we should look to the future. I’m sure there are actions that we should be undertaking that will require cooperation with Aboriginal people and some highly specialized qualified people. Especially for the Adult Aboriginal people who have a long history of poor living standards. I wonder whether the Voice intends to have the Federal Government set up highly elite groups of academics from the various University groups undertaking indigenous studies. But I feel it requires Local Government involvement

Another consideration is financing the Voice. Do the advocates of the Voice expect the cost of maintaining the Voice to come from Government funds, i.e., taxpayer’s money? As I see it the Voice will be like another Government Department and that, I would expect, will be quite expensive and not particularly successful.

Dear Editor, I would like to sincerely thank the finder of my hearing aid, and for taking the trouble to hand it into Specsavers at Bribie Island recently. I was surprised and delighted to get the phone call from Specsavers to say they had been handed in. This has saved me considerable expense at replacing it or going without it until next year. Dear Editor and Community, I have just found out that the Queensland parliament passed a new law that allows people to change their gender on their birth certificate WITHOUT having reassignment surgery. I rang Ali King's office to ask which way Ali voted and was informed that she voted Yes! I don't know about you, but I didn't hear any word, consultation, written article, or Facebook post that informed the community that Ali was going to vote yes to this.

I was told by Ali's secretary that I was allowed my 'opinion' that there are two genders, and that Ali didn't need to tell her community about how she will vote on this law.

Now if I said I identify as a senior citizen (at the age of 47) I am sure the government would disagree with me and not pay me a pension. Would they even allow me to change my birthdate? I don't think so. So why can you change your biological gender whilst still maintaining/having those very factual real gender attributes?

If you are born biologically male (or female) and you have not removed your male (or female) attributes, then surely you are still a male/female and changing your gender on your birth certificate would be a fraud?

Dear Editor, Recently ABC radio asked listeners to nominate the song that best described the feelings of homesick Australians while overseas. Two suggestions were: London Still by the great West Australian band The Waifs; and I still call Australia Home by the iconic Peter Allen. Both songs evoke strong feelings about our home country.

After listening, I pondered on how our Indigenous Australians reflect on the current issue being tossed around by the two sides vying for our vote on granting Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander citizens a say in improving their life chances by giving constitutional recognition of their voice to advise parliament on issues of direct effect to their

There has been a lot of publicity about homelessness and public housing. I do not think the two should be put in the same basket. Some choose to not be confined by bills and society's restrictions, but of course, many do need some form of assistance, especially those women with children from violent situations.

One of my concerns has always been the state of the homes that are given out to those, supposedly in need of a roof over their heads at the expense of the taxpayers. In Bongaree there are such houses and one near me should be evicted even though they have children. Three times that home has had to be renovated, and the family placed in a hotel while this happens, again at the taxpayer’s expense. Where is their show of obligation and appreciation to those that provide this home, you, the taxpayer?

Children are feral and do not attend school nor are disciplined in a normal way, so

improved futures. The Uluru Statement from the Heart is the culmination of a very long struggle dating back to the early 1900s, not counting the earlier frontier wars and ravages of imported diseases during which many Indigenous people were eliminated.

Denying the rights of groups of people to obtain what is theirs to obtain is nothing new in democratic societies, especially in Australia. One has only to reflect on the struggle by women to get the right to vote; the strikes to achieve an eight-hour day, fair pay, sick leave and annual leave; the divisive campaigning that led to parliament changing laws to grant marriage equality; and now the very destructive, polarising direction being followed by those

no example set but to become like their parent/s yet they continually are housed with obviously no follow-up or rules for them like other renters have. What gratitude and care do these people give back to those that have provided it? Many are good tenants but as we continually see in public housing areas the houses are trashed, inside and out, and many now lay vacant because of this happening. If they are to be given a roof over their heads then make them responsible and have caveats on their occupancy, they must pay for the damage, even if it is taken out of their pensions or wages, and they sign a contract that states if they do not maintain it then they will be evicted. Not rewarded with a holiday in a hotel. Public housing is necessary, but I think it is time to change the how and who, and get the public servants out there and see what is happening in reality and who really deserves these homes.

My solar inverter is 14 years old and the panel which tells me what I’m collecting energy has gone blank. When I discovered this, along with an ant nest in the connection switch, I looked up the BI service directory and found an ad for Powered Electricians and Solar.

That was Friday, and by Monday, Charlie had visited to inspect the system, and when I couldn’t find anything wrong with the connections, he said there would be no charge! Now that’s what I call service.  Now that I have received my power bill which confirms the diagnosis, I would like to recommend Charlie to all readers.

The fuel farce continues, and no one seems concerned – not, even, the RACQ – supposedly the motorist’s friend. The cost of fuel feeds into every product and is, therefore, a significant component in the cost of living. The government says they are concerned but whilst we see the lips move it’s apparently just to check that they are working.

Recently it was noted that from about Beerwah, north, around the highway, west, even as far as Kingaroy, fuel was some 40c cheaper than around Caboolture/Bribie. Two days later, the discrepancy. had reduced to around 25c and about the same, 4 days later.

If the outer areas can trade at around $1.75 with, presumably, lower volumes, then motorists around here are, apparently, being ripped off.  Looking at Brisbane I even see prices as low as $1.57 and the Gold Coast as low as $160.7. So, hound your local member and the RACQ to do something about, what seems to me, something very wrong. Ruggles

Have you noticed that the Bribie Island and District Neighborhood Centre has moved to No 50 Verdoni streetjust up the road from where they were? The move is to allow for a new purpose-built building to be erected on the old site.

Cars parking on the footpaths blocks pedestrians from walking past. A bad habit! I see red- when residents and children are forced to walk out onto the road just to walk down a street because somebody parked their car across the footpath. I know we live in a Holiday resort community, but we still should abide by the rules.

You are not allowed to park on footpaths, divided strips –

Bicycle paths- painted islands or nature strips adjacent to a roadway. You can be fined by MBRC or Qld Police

What can you do to help solve and or prevent crime? For starters- look at installing CCTV cameras on your property. Report suspicious activity or information and a possible crime, to Crime Stoppers -anonymously on 1800333000 and complete the online form.

If criminal activity is happening now! call triple 0 and file a Police Report.

We had a gentleman call and told me about his experience with a pair of con men who defrauded him, and another neighbour last week and we want to warn you that they are hanging around.

This is Duncan's story…

Two UK nationals, with strong Yorkshire accents, came door-knocking saying they were doing another job in the same street and could offer a reduced rate for immediate roof restoration including:

• Repair/replacement of damaged/cracked tiles

• Repointing of ridge tiles

• Cleaning and sealing the entire roof

• Repainting with quality roof paint with a fourteen-year warranty.

• Required cash-only payment for a reduction on the normal price.

Duncan swallowed their story and agreed to the price of over $4000. He paid cash on completion, but they could not give him an immediate receipt or invoice but said they would email it ASAP. Now Duncan is in his mid-70s and cannot get up on the roof to check the job, but he could see that they had missed parts and he asked them to make good that omission. So, they did spray a little more, but from ground level!

Duncan asked for them to leave some paint to touch up which they gave him a partially filled tub, but as they left in a hurry, Duncan did not get to check the paint. To his dismay, the tub they left was almost all water, pretty much just some paint residue and the water that they flushed their paint hoses out with.

Taking the tub of “touch-up” paint to the Brisbane distributor, Duncan’s concerns were realised as they confirmed it was almost all water and quite useless for any purpose. They were most concerned that their brand products were being misrepresented and the likely damage to their brand reputation.

The next day Duncan got a local roof restoration business to inspect the roof, which confirmed his

worst fears, no repair work had been done and what had been done was with extremely poor workmanship and very scant/thin coverage, missing many areas. There is no warranty and no paperwork from these shonky operators and now Duncan shall have to pay again for a proper restoration job from a reputable business.

Duncan’s neighbour, who had them paint her driveway, rang them to complain that the colour they used was not what she had requested, and she wanted them to return and remove their plastic sheeting and clean up but has been unable to get any satisfactory response from them.

Likewise, when Duncan tried to call them back the respondent said he didn’t know anything about it and hung up. This has all been reported to Bribie Island Police, but they have advised Duncan that it is a civil matter, not a police matter and that he should follow it up via other channels such as Queensland Building and Construction Commission. Duncan did contact QBCC, but their response was totally inappropriate.

Duncan is at a loss as to whom to contact now to get some action on these fraudsters who seem to be able to operate with impunity. He said, “Of course, I realise that I did not apply common sense and due diligence before engaging these characters and that ‘Buyer Beware’ sense should have alerted me not to deal with them at all but, my common sense failed me this time.”

Duncan contacted me to ask for help advising our local community to be alert to these unscrupulous operators, as doesn’t want this to happen to anyone else.
