PRESIDENT’S MESSAGE
Dear Members, Christmas seems so recent yet we are already into the second quarter of the year. I hope the year is going well for all and the New Year’s resolutions have been fulfilled or are at least intact. March was a busy month at the Club with, amongst other events, our Management and Main Committee Vision Day, a British Club Open House, the annual Masters’ Tennis Tour nament, a wine dinner showcasing wines from Argentina and the launch of the 2016 Best of British celebration.
MAIN COMMITTEE

Steve Settle Vice President Chairman of Sports Committee

Stephen Fulton Honorary Treasurer Chairman of Finance Committee

The Open House was held on Sunday, 6th March with quite a number of potential members taking guided tours of the Club and gaining first-hand knowledge of our terrific facilities. I am very pleased to note that many of our existing members have introduced their friends to the Club. You are the best ambassadors for your club and there is no better reason to use the club than to relax with your friends. A reminder for all; as a token of appreciation for your support, members benefit from points credited to their account for every successful new member introduction.
Shaun Matheson
To continue the theme, I’d like to issue a warm welcome to recent new members and I encourage you to approach our Member Relations team for any information about the Club or what is on offer.
Stephen Walker
This month our Members Connect Night will take place on Thursday, 7th April. New and long standing Members are very welcome to join us for canapes and refreshments and to meet other members in the relaxed and beautiful surroundings of the Treetops Terrace. Straight after that, why don’t you pop down to catch our very own British Club band at the Windsor Arms and cap off a relaxing evening. On the subject of The Windsor Arms, following consistent feedback from members, we have slightly relaxed the dress code to include Bermuda shorts and open-toe sandals or flip flops although gym, running-style or dirty sportswear remain unacceptable. I would ask all members, out of respect for each other, to observe the various dress codes where they apply. Our Monday Dining Madness, previously applicable in the Windsor, has been extended to provide 50% off food purchases at all our Food and Beverage outlets each Monday. This is a great opportunity so come along with your family to dine and enjoy this limited offer. If you are down at the gym or playing tennis, why don’t you stop at Scores for a bite to eat? Thank you for your continued support and have a great month ahead. DAMIAN R. HILLS President

BETTER LATE THAN NEVER: 2015 TAX RETURNS FOR UK EXPATS By Martin Rimmer, Tax Manager – The Fry Group
Many expats haven’t noticed, but the deadline for 2014/15 tax returns whooshed past on 31st January 2016. Either too busy to take notice or they put the task to the side for later, expats are often confused about whether they should be preparing UK tax returns or not. There are benefits to acting now on your taxes – even after the deadline. Not just for good housekeeping, being proactive builds a track record of tax compliance. Brownie points with the taxman today can save you pain in the future. Even with a letter from HMRC stating that you don’t need to, make sure to read the caveats – e.g. you may need to file returns if circumstances change. Expats who didn’t need to file tax returns previously, should check whether that is still the case today. Here are some common pitfalls to watch out for when starting your tax returns as an expat: •
On-line returns: surprisingly the new on-line tax return system does not allow you to identify as a non-resident. Expats s hould make sure they are claiming non-residency.
•
Defining residency: The amount of time you can spend in the UK each year while maintaining non-resident status can vary from 15 days to 182 days per year, depending on circumstances.
•
Working in the UK: If you return to the UK for business the type of activity you are undertaking can affect residency – training may not be considered work, managing a cross-border team might qualify. Some companies notify HMRC as a matter of policy and it’s worth knowing whether that is the case with you.
• Tax on rental properties: Expats that rent out their UK property often aren’t aware that rental accounts need to be prepared on the ‘accruals’ basis, rather than just by adding up income and subtracting expenses incurring in the tax year itself. •
Incorrectly filled out pages: Residence Pages, Personal Allowance not adequately claimed and dividend income – which can often be tax free – remains taxed.
We often see expats who are worried because they’ve ignored their tax affairs, sometimes for years. Commonly the same mistakes are made on tax returns from year to year. Chronic mistakes in your filings can have expensive consequences, such as missed opportunities in tax planning or it can be a red flag to HMRC that your returns are not fully compliant. If this rings true to you, then the main thing is not to bury your head in the sand. These things can be dealt with and it is not as painful as you might imagine. It’s not too late to put your tax affairs right, but it will take some work, ideally with professional help. Whatever your past experience of UK tax returns, it is worth reviewing your tax status regularly and reviewing your tax returns with an advisor can be a good way to consider your tax planning in general. This can provide piece of mind when considering a return to the UK in the future.

MEMBER IN THE SPOTLIGHT For this issue of Member in the Spotlight, we are delighted to feature one of our Main Committee Members, Mr Stephen Walker. Stephen joined the Club in 2012. He is currently the Chief Information Office of DHL and also the Chairman of the Club’s Member Services (F&B and A&E) Committee.
1) What brought you to Singapore and The British Club? Like many people my work brought me to Singapore four years ago and a colleague brought me along to Tthe British Club. I knew immediately that I would love to become a member. I loved the friendly atmosphere and the general ambience and the food was great. I didn’t join for a few weeks though as my wife, Mary had not yet joined me in Singapore and like all important decisions I wanted to get her thoughts. Like me when we both toured the club, she was hooked and we have never looked back! 2) Being an expat living in Singapore, what will be your favourite local food and food haunts? We love Indian food and as well as the fabulous Indian cuisine at the British Club, we love going to Little India and sampling the delicious Indian dishes there. We also love Chilli and Black Pepper Crab, and eating authentic Chinese food in China Town. 3) As Chief Information Officer for DHL, can you share with us your secret for success? I believe in hard work and as a leader being focused on people. DHL is one of the largest employers in the world and our people are vital to ensuring that our customers are delighted with everything we do for them. As a fan of Manchester United (having been born in Manchester), I am a huge fan of Alex Ferguson and recent events and results at the club just underline how good he was a manager and leader. He believes in hard work and dedication to achieve goals and the need to appeal to people’s emotions to instill confidence and hunger to win! 4) The Club lives by the 3 Steps of Service, a Warm Welcome, Magic Moment and Fond Farwell. Could you share with us your recent Magic Moment at The British Club? We celebrated Mary’s 50th birthday with our very best friends at the club recently and it was fabulous. From the welcome, to the canapés on the rooftop terrace to the brilliant lunch, the staff had gone the extra mile preparing everything for the occasion and of course the service during the day was second to none. It was organized as a surprise and Mary was absolutely delighted. Yes, definitely a magic moment! 5) What has most impressed you about the Club thus far? The staff! From the time you enter the door, go into reception, past the Windsor shop and of course in all the outlets, sports area and swimming pool the welcome and level of service we receive is absolutely first class. We go to the Mountbatten room almost every Sunday lunch and the service and quality of food is the best in Singapore. We feel like we are with friends and it makes every visit a delight. There is no doubt that The British Club can be very proud of their staff and it’s a huge credit the general manager Sean Boyle and his management team!

“OUR WAY” by Raelene Tan ST. GEORGE’S DAY St. George’s Day, celebrated in England on Saturday, 23 April, honours the patron-saint of England, hailed as a protector since the 13th century. Flags bearing the cross of St. George (red cross on white background) fly from churches and buildings on this day, a symbol of England and also the Anglican Church. Patriots wear a red rose, signifying peace. In London’s Trafalgar Square, the Mayor of London hosts a carnival where traditional Morris dancing and Punch & Judy puppet shows take place. In the beautiful walled-city of Chester (hometown of our General Manager Sean Boyle), wining and dining at Chester Racecourse, England’s oldest racecourse still in use, will attract celebrants this year.
Photographs: flag (The British Club); dragon (Raelene Tan)
St. George is probably best-known for his exploits with a dragon. According to legend, he liberated a Middle Eastern town threatened by a dragon, saving a princess’ life. Astride his horse, the knight struck the dragon with his sword, after first invoking the sign-of-the-cross, until the creature finally succumbed. Worldwide, numerous churches bear the name of St. George. Stained-glass windows, among other art forms, depict St. George slaying the dragon. Windsor Castle chapel carries his name, while the Boy Scout movement also honours this Saint. When the ship Mayflower carried pilgrims from England to America in 1620, it flew the flag of St. George, for protection. The United Kingdom’s Union Jack flag combines crosses of three countries (England, Ireland and Scotland), including the cross of St. George representing England.

The history of the Burge family and their long association with winemaking in the region can be traced back to 1855, when noted tailor John Burge immigrated to the Barossa from Hillcot, new Pewsey in Wiltshire, England with his wife and two sons. John worked as a winemaker at Hillside Vineyards and his love of viticulture was passed onto his son, Meschach, who continued the tradition making his first wine in 1865, whilst becoming a prominent community leader. Following in the footsteps of his father and forefathers, Grant Burge is a fifth-generation Barossa vigneron and winemaker. Grant believes if the right varieties are grown in the right soils, and vines are managed to produce low to moderate yields, the vines will produce premium quality fruit needed to produce exceptional wines. With the combination of the best terroirs, the best climate and the best winemaking techniques, the natural result is the best wine. We are happy to have Mr Oliver Negron with us this month to share with us the uniqueness of Grant Burge wines. Oliver is a certified Sommelier with 20 years of experience in the Food & Beverage industry. With his vast knowledge of wine to-date and his charming personality, you will definitely experience an adventure of a lifetime not to be missed!

CLASSIC MOVING IS GOING PLACES
Moving homes and swapping locations is a fact of expat life. So when the time comes to make a move, it’s essential to find the right company to ensure the process is as smooth as possible. Classic Moving, founded by British international moving expert Brad Street, prides itself on being the perfect partner. And with the business going from strength-to-strength, customers in Singapore are showing that they agree. In just four years, Aylesbury-born Brad has built the company from having one employee, one client and a small base in Toh Guan to a team of 25, completing an impressive 1,000 moves each year for expatriate families and corporate clients in and out of Singapore. Following this expansion, the business recently moved to new headquarters in Gul Way, Jurong, where its brand new offices and a 30,000 square foot state-of-the-art warehouse facility will allow it to serve its clients even better. The British Club, which Classic Moving proudly supports, joined the official opening along with former professional footballer, manager and TV sports pundit Paul Parker, who was invited as guest of honour to cut the ribbon and declare the company’s new home open. Guests were treated to an afternoon of live music, a prize draw and delicious food and drink provided by The British Club’s catering team.
Classic Moving: The story so far After starting his working life in the British armed forces, Brad successfully switched to the international moving industry, working for a small business as a packer (in the days when an apron was part of the uniform!). He then went on to join leading UK firms such as Baxters International Movers, Britannia Movers, Sterling Relocation and Pickfords, moving hundreds of families over 20 years. With this impressive CV and two decades’ experience, Brad was hired to work as general manager for an international moving business in Singapore in 2010. However, he quickly spotted an opportunity to do things differently and provide better service and value to clients here. Classic Moving was launched in March 2012 and is rapidly building a great reputation in its industry. Brad leads the growing team as its managing director, supported by James Sanderson, director of sales, and office manager Kavitha Letchmanan. However, despite the business’s expansion, Classic Moving retains its distinct family feel with the team committed to providing great service. Many of the staff have made international moves themselves, and bring a wide range of experience from locations including the UK, China, Brazil and Finland. This creates a team that truly understands what it’s like for customers to move their life across the world. A focus on service Explaining how Classic Moving differentiates itself, Brad says: “We recognise that when we work with a customer, they are placing their home into our hands. Moving home naturally creates upheaval, particularly when it involves a move to another country. However, we never forget how much our clients value their possessions and everything they mean to them, which is why we put all our expertise, passion and attention to detail into moving them in as stress-free a way as possible.” Good communication and a strong relationship are essential. Starting from when the team meets a new client and through to the minute their last possession is unpacked, Classic Moving believes in working in partnership to provide a service closely tailored to the customer’s needs – and keeping them informed throughout. This goes hand-in-hand with a strong focus on providing the very best quality. “This underpins everything we do,” says Brad. “From the handpicked packing teams we send into our clients’ homes, to the high specification materials we use to transport their treasured possessions, we’re constantly looking at ways to keep improving our service.”
Putting customers’ needs first Classic Moving’s focus on its customers led to the launch of an exciting new product last year, called Classic Silver Services. This provides a onestop service to help clients set up home quickly when they arrive in Singapore, or provide much-needed support when they leave. Brad explains: “When clients move here we can provide a handy man to complete the long list of tasks which make their new house a home. Then when it’s time to move on, we can help with chores such as aircon servicing, car valeting, cleaning – even a bespoke packing service for valuable handbags and shoes. It’s all designed to make our clients’ lives easier and to allow them to focus on their main priorities, be it settling in and getting down to work or wrapping up life here and saying their goodbyes.” So with a growing team, new services and new headquarters, it’s been a busy four years for Classic Moving and this trend looks set to continue as the business continues to expand. Brad concludes: “We’re proud that more and more companies and families are placing their trust in us and, in turn, recommending us. That’s truly the best compliment we can receive and it’s down to the hard work of the talented team we have here. We’re looking forward to a great year ahead, delighting even more clients from our new base.”
Classic Moving’s tips for a smooth move • Take time to work with the surveyor assigned to do your assessment. You’ll naturally be familiar with all the furniture and possessions in your home, but make sure you point out anything relevant, such as furniture which belongs to your landlord or anything you’re not taking with you. • Let your surveyor know if you plan to shop for any sizeable souvenirs before you leave. The beautiful piece of teak furniture you have your eye on at Dempsey Hill could make all the difference to the volume you require! • If you live in a condo, let the management office know your moving date. You will probably need to book a loading bay, as well as protective padding for the lifts. There is usually a deposit required in case of damage – Classic Moving covers this as part of its comprehensive service to customers. • Separate and clearly identify any items that you don’t want to ship – packing crews are very quick and efficient! • Don’t forget to empty the fridge freezer well in advance if you are taking it with you. • Minimise the risk of mould and mildew by ensuring everything you ship – particularly bedding and soft furnishings – is completely clean and dry. • Ensure all furniture is dust-free as dust carries the spores which create mould. Using vacuum bags can stop this (Classic Moving offers this as part of its Classic Silver Services). • Once you’re in your new location and your possessions arrive, carry out a thorough check to ensure everything is accounted for.

SWIMMING:
BC SWIMMING COACHES DREAM TEAM By Emma Thomas That’s what Dawn and Rolando are commonly known as within The British Club swimming section. They don’t come much better than this duo! This month we tried to get a bit more insight into Dawn to see if she really is as perfect as she seems. Emma Thomas (ET) – How long have you been at the British club? Dawn Lee (DL) – Since 2011. I was working with the Learn To Swim section until 6 months ago when I transferred to the squad and masters. ET – When did you qualify and what enticed you into swimming? DL – 2009 - for the enjoyment of it and the self improvement ET – What’s the difference between working at the BC and other jobs you’ve had previously? DL – There’s definitely a different culture here. Working with Expat kids is different to the local children. I have had to learn how to reason and answer a lot more questions! Local kids will be told something and do it whereas children here want a rationale and want to know why I’m asking them to do something. I think that’s a good thing though once you get used to it! ET – Favourite part of the job? DL – Squads and Masters Team having fun but getting better at the same time ET – Worst part of the job? DL – When the kids are naughty! ET – What are your hobbies outside work? DL – cooking, soccer (football to the Brits) and learning to make great coffee ET – What’s Roland like as a boss? DL – More of a friend and he’s never bossy. In fact I’m the bossy one! ET – Any gossip on Rolando? DL – No, only that he’s great at so many different sports ET – Ultimate goal in life DL – Be happy ET – Quote for your swimmers DL – ‘The future belongs to those who believe in the beauty of their dreams’ Eleanour Roosevelt. So there you have it….she really is as great as she seems and even when I asked Roland for some inside gossip he had nothing but praise for Dawn!

SPORTS & FITNESS GOLF:
GOLF SECTION HAPPENINGS By Paul Nikkel & Nic Merrow-Smith NEWS FROM THE GREENS Congratulations are in order for one of our golfers who wasn’t psyched out by the island par 3 17th hole at Horizon Hills, read on to find out more. His name will be carved into the honours board at the Johor club forever more. You have received news that our Club members can now use the facilities at Laguna National Golf & Country Club, including yes, the golf courses! We will report on an outing there in a future newsletter. The only other bit of news was that Jordan Spieth was in town for the Singapore Open in February. But honestly, you don’t need to queue up to see spectacular golf if you come our with us once in a while, right Mark? Jordan Spieth prepares to let one rip 300m down Serapong’s 18th fairway at the Singapore Open.
AN ‘ACE’ STEALS THE SHOW: FEBRUARY STABLEFORD REPORT
by Paul Nikkel
It was a lovely Sunday afternoon at Horizon Hills Golf Club where 7 golfers vied for the monthly bragging rights. With handicaps ranging from 19-34, we were not expecting many low scores but rather lots of good companionships and an especially good cost per shot ratio. The front nine was played quickly on somewhat soggy fairways and proved to be a challenge. David (Bill) Christie took closest to the pin on hole 3 with the only ball of the event on the green. The back nine slowed down as the course backed up. With much patience (and poor shots on my part) we prevailed until we reached the short par 3 17th, our last closest to the pin. Mark Nikkel selected a pitching wedge, stepped up and proceeded to knock it in the hole on one bounce! “I knew it was good, despite my Dad yelling for it to go the whole way.” Congratulations to Mark for carding the first ace of his career. We celebrated at the clubhouse and tried to figure our how to spend the 2,000 Ringgit F&B prize the Club gave us. In the end, we selected a number of bottles of libations that were donated to the Golf Section for future prizes. Also congratulations to Colin Allcard for winning the Stableford with 36 points and John Hancock for runner-up on a close 35 points.
Lovely overcast skies helped the scoring. From left to right; Abhijit Patwardhan, Roy Davidson and Colin Allcard.
Eating his way through $700 worth of ice-cream wasn’t going to happen, so Mark has generously contributed whiskey & wine to our prize pool.
Yeah, he knows not what lays ahead, Mark Nikkel with dad, Paul and (left) John Hancock, on the 1st tee.
THE BRITISH CLUB
Ah bless him, he’s only a couple of years junior to Jordan Spieth. Mark Nikkel celebrates his Hole-In-One on the 17th.

SPORTS & FITNESS TENNIS:
APRIL UPDATE – CONTINUED OPPORTUNITIES FOR LADIES AND JUNIORS Edited by Julia Fenton For women who would like to improve their game and get to know other Club members and for junior players keen to develop their skills and make new friends, our active Tennis Section members Lisa Mowle and Liza Rowan are dedicated to keeping these regular groups active and fun for members.
LADIES LADDERS – good company and game improvement
The Ladder is a social way to play tennis, a fantastic opportunity to meet other Club members and open to everyone. It operates from January to November; each month players are placed in groups of 4 and make arrangements to play a 3 set match in a round robin scenario. Each player plays one set with the other ladies in the group and the scores from all 3 sets are added up to give your ‘score’ for the month. Each month you get the chance to play with a different set of ladies. The arrangement for setting up the game is managed by the ‘captain’ of the four for that month. At the end of the year there is a very enjoyable social tennis morning followed by a delicious Scores lunch. There is also a monthly singles ladder. If you would like to join this sociable group, please email the ladder Co-ordinator, Lisa Mowle at lisamowleladder@gmail.com.
JUNIOR TENNIS – more great tennis from our aspiring young players This season The British Club has 7 teams taking part in The Junior Tennis Team League (U10s – U17s mixed boys and girls) and the weekend matches are being thoroughly enjoyed by our team players and parents alike. The matches are organised by Savitar and held at various locations throughout Singapore, while each of the teams has an allocated 2-hour training time slot at the club. The League’s sponsorship now comes from Lacoste (previously it was KLM), although the group is still getting used to the name change! Some of our juniors also participated in the SMASH league in the earlier months this year and although no prizes were won, plenty of match play experience and fun was enjoyed.

SQUASH:
THE BRITISH CLUB SQUASH AND THE NATIONAL SQUASH LEAGUE By Andrew Marshall and The Boaster ‘What’s better than playing squash?’ we sometimes ask ourselves down at Squash Central below Scores. The answer is simple – playing TEAM SQUASH! Once again, The British Club has entered the E grade of the Singapore National Squash League and after flirting with success last year (before going home with disaster, as we usually do) we are determined to triumph this time round. We have a squad of 15 this season. First up, as is fitting in The British Club, are the brave Brits. Most are called James or Andrew to make supporting them easier. Captain Jim Mitchell (also our best player) shares a name with Jamie Salamon & James Bauly. Our 3 Andrews are Vine, Stearns and Marshall and then Nick Fell, Arron Holmes and past President Steve Settle make up the Union Jackers. No British army was ever complete without contributions from the colonies and so we grabbed plucky Canucks Craig Telmer and Paul Nikkel and added them to ace Aussie Matt Gyde and super Springbok Rainer Kasch. Finally, as we play in our Fried Rice Paradise, we needed some local knowledge and selected Raymond Kwee and the only youngster in our ranks -15 year old Evann Tan. And who will this band of brothers play this season? Our first opponents were old rivals – the SCC - and they were easily beaten 4-0 by one of the Jims (Mitchell), one of the Andrews (Marshall), Nick and Evann. Our first home game is against the Dutch Club and we’ll have four more Monday home games after that – do come and cheer us on. Road trips will be to the highly rated United Condos team and the Chinese Swimming Club and we have games against SAFSA (current army personnel) and the even stronger SAFRA (reservists and so every Singaporean male can play for them!) One game is against a new team called the Angry Birds who are naturally expected to fly high but maybe not against the bad The British Club piggies. E grade won’t be E-asy but it will be E-xciting. Bring it on!

SCUBA:
SCUBA SECTION DRY MEETING: MEET JILL HEINERTH By Karo De Beul
More people have walked on the moon, than have been to some of the places that Jill’s exploration has taken her… As reported in the previous The British Club magazine, the Scuba Section will be at the ADEX dive fair again this year from Friday to Sunday, 15 to 17 April. Because our monthly dry meeting is the day after ADEX, we decided to see if any of the ADEX guest speakers were willing to stay a day longer in Singapore to come and present to us. We are really excited that Jill Heinerth accepted our invitation and will be the guest speaker at our dry meeting on Monday, 18 April. Jill is a Canadian cave diver, underwater explorer, writer, photographer and filmmaker. More people have walked on the moon than have been to some of the places that Jill’s exploration has taken her right here on the earth. From the most dangerous technical dives deep inside underwater caves, to searching for never before seen ecosystems inside giant Antarctic icebergs, to the lawless desert border area between Egypt and Libya while a civil war raged around her, Jill’s curiosity and passion about our watery planet is the driving force in her life. Jill has made TV series for PBS (US), National Geographic Channel and the BBC, consulted on movies for directors including James Cameron, written three books and produced documentaries including “We Are Water” and “Ben’s Vortex”. We would like to share this unique opportunity to listen to Jill’s story with all British Club Members; please join us on Monday, 18 April and hear Jill speak about her passion: Diving. At the time of writing we are still working on the meal part of the evening. Contact scuba@britishclub.org.sg for more information and keep an eye on your mailbox if you are interested in this event.

SPORTS & FITNESS CRICKET:
WELCOME TO A NEW SEASON By Paul McNee
2016 kicked off with a number of new members to the club joining the Cricket Team. Rohan Persaud joined the club with his family on Monday and was in the Cricket Team for the Saturday, not wasting any time there! New playing kit and many members with new bats courtesy of Christmas all added up to an air of excitement going into our first game against ANZA. The scorecard for this game seems to have been misplaced so I have to rely on my memory for the scores. It was a close loss with The British Club Bowlers starting the new season off brilliantly with Paul Twine taking early wickets during his spell of 2 for 20-something (off 5) and yours truly (Paul McNee) also having a good start with the ball taking 2/12 (off 5) (I remember my own stats!) At the midpoint of the innings ANZA were struggling and looked unlikely to get much past 130, however, a late innings flurry saw them post an OK score of 170. I can’t recall too much of The British Club run chase, suffice to say it was a bit of a blur mid /late innings as we had one of our all too common mid-late, order collapses. The guys who shone with the ball Twine and McNee (with his new bat) both failed to trouble the scorers and the rest of the team clearly didn’t play any standout innings (if they did I can’t recall them) as The British Club fell short of the required runs. Game 2: The British Club vs MISFITS ATHLETIC The highlight of this game was one of The British Club’s best ever fielding performances. Not only were catches held, there were 2 run outs from direct hits and the standard of the out fielding was first class, a very unusual situation for the BC Cricket lads. BC batted first and scored 199/8 off their 30 overs with new recruit /new member Nick Power (exSCC) scoring a solid 32, Mark Stafford in commanding form with 43*, new season Co-Captain Shane Sampson getting 29 and the ever reliable David Bennett chipping in with a quick-fire 19. Misfits made good work of the chase, however, they fell 13 runs short with Peter (Chopper) Welsh leading the way with the ball for The British Club taking 3/21 off 5 overs. Game 3: The British Club vs Woodpeckers CC. The British Club batted first and got off to a poor start, losing the openers with very few runs on the board. If it were not for a solid 30 by Ex-Captain Buck we would have been in an embarrassing situation. Luckily the 2nd half of the innings saw a complete turnaround with another new recruit Prem, despite coming off a debut duck, riding his luck with some agricultural shots in scoring 32, Roger Kelly hitting 21 (off 15) and Mark Christensen smashing 29 off 8 balls. Luckily for Ex-Skipper Buck, he got to come back in at the end of the innings (he had retired at 30 first time around without scoring a boundary) and hit a lovely pull shot off the dangerous Prendiville to ensure he avoided the embarrassment of top scoring without a boundary. Unfortunately, the Woodpeckers run chase turned into a bit of a stroll in the park, as The British Club’s bowlers were again let down in the field and by themselves (too many short deliveries)

Game 4: The British Club vs MISFITS ATHLETIC. For the 2nd time in 3 weeks, The British Club strode out to play Misfits. This time, Misfits batted first and it was another excellent bowling performance from The British Club bowlers. Mark Prendiville reached into his bags of tricks and had the opposition batsmen (as well as himself) wondering what was coming next as he bowled a series of leg spinners, slower balls, quicker balls, and bouncers. The strategy clearly worked as he took 1 for 8 (off 4 overs). Ex Member Mark Sandys, back in Singapore from his new home in Ireland bowled an excellent spell taking 1/21 off his 5 overs and McNee chipped in with 2/17 (off 4) including bowling the dangerous Jamie Benison for only 2. The tightness of The British Club bowling was shown by the fact that the Misfits opener Vasanth took 60 balls to score 30 runs! Misfits eventually limped to a score of 8/146 setting what looked like a very gettable total to chase. However, it is never quite that simple with The British Club cricket. Despite Richard Wall leading the way at the top of the innings with a wellmade 30, once again a mid-innings collapse threatened to derail the run chase. Up stepped 2 of the veterans of the team, Mr. David Bennet (36 off 20 balls) and Paul Twine. Twiney didn’t let the fact that he had 2 ducks and a score of 3 so far this season as he hit a very nice 28 off 29 balls including his best ever shot a towering straight hit 6! The British Club eventually got to the target with one wicket remaining (we never do it the easy way) for a well-deserved victory. It’s been a great start to the season with some exciting cricket played. Any members who would like a game, please get in contact as it is a very long season (28 games) and we are always looking for some new talent.
