2 PRESIDENT’S MESSAGE MAIN COMMITTEE

Dear Members, Christmas seems so recent yet we are already into the second quarter of the year. I hope the year is going well for all and the New Year’s resolutions have been fulfilled or are at least intact. March was a particularly busy month for the Club. We had a Management and Main Committee Vision Day, our Club’s Open House, the annual Masters’ Tennis Tournament, a Wine Dinner featuring some of the top wines from Chile and the screening of the Rugby Six Nations matches. The Open House was held on Sunday, 12 March with quite a number of potential members taking guided tours of the Club and gaining first-hand knowledge of our terrific facilities. I am very pleased to note that many of our existing Members have introduced their friends to the Club. You are the best ambassadors for your Club and there is no better reason to use the Club than to relax with your friends. As a thank you, members whose friends signed up for Club Memberships during the Open House will receive triple rewards points credited into their account. To continue the theme, I’d like to issue a warm welcome to recent new Members and I encourage you to approach our Member Relations team for any information about the Club or what is on offer. This month our Members Connect Night will take place on Thursday, 6 April. Members new and old (young and of longstanding maybe?) are very welcome to join us for canapes and refreshments and to meet other members in the relaxed and beautiful surroundings of the Treetops Terrace. Later in the month, there are a variety of Easter offers including, on Sunday, 16 April, an indulgent 3-course Sunday Lunch at The Mountbatten Room. There will also be a Sunday Champagne Brunch at The Elizabeth Suite Ballroom, so register early to get your seats booked. But don’t leave your kids at home – we’ve got our annual Easter egg crafts and treasure hunt to keep them entertained as well! Look out for the Best of British 2017 as we officially launch our 5th anniversary celebrations on Wednesday, 12 April. More information on event bookings is now available online with hardcopies of booking forms available at the Reception desk. On behalf of the Club, we thank you for your continued support and wish everyone a great month ahead. DAMIAN R. HILLS President

GM’S MESSAGE 3 CLUB MANAGEMENT

Dear Members, I hope everyone’s feeling well rested and ready to take on another busy month. It will be no different here at The British Club, as we ramp up for one of our biggest events of the year: the Best of British celebrations. Stay tuned for more. I am most pleased to announce that we will be officially launching the Best of British 2017 on 12 April at the Club. The festivities are just a couple of months away, taking place in early June from 4 – 17 June. Be sure to mark the dates down and make yourself available for yet another lineup of exciting events for everyone. Our Grand Finale: West End Premiere at The London Palladium will be held at the One Farrer Hotel & Spa this year. As always, book soon to enjoy our early bird specials. Into its 5th successful year, this year’s Best of British promises to be the biggest and grandest one yet. Introducing new sponsors like Bupa Global, Landex and World of Diamonds, I also want to thank our returning sponsors the Australian International School, British Airways, Classic Moving & Storage, Courts, Insider TV, Leisure Farm, Resorts World Sentosa, Royal Plaza on Scotts, Stamford American International School, Singapore Turf Club, Starhub and The Fry Group, who have offered their steadfast commitment and support for yet another year, which is truly appreciated. For the celebrities attending the Best of British this year, we have not one but two celebrity chefs – brothers James and Chris Tanner from Plymouth, who are also co-owners of 2AA Rosette gastropub The Kentish Hare, The Barbican Kitchen in Plymouth, and The Catch in Looe, which won “Best Newcomer” in the National Fish and Chip Awards in 2016. Back by popular demand, the highly acclaimed West End of London musical artiste Emma Dears will be performing alongside multi-award winning actress Lucy Williamson. Prepare for some non-stop laughter with a host of UK comedians such as 2-time British Comedy Award winner Neil Fitzmaurice, Scott Mitchell, Chris Henry and Mr. Liverpool himself Pete Price. You may check out more about the events on pages 12 to 19 of this magazine. So don’t wait – log on to our website at www.britishclub.org.sg to book online now. I hope that all this has you up and excited for the coming months. We look forward to seeing you at the 2-week celebration of Best of British in June. In the meantime, enjoy all the wonderful promotions we have for this month. I wish all Members an enjoyable time at the Club this April.

4 TIPS FOR BRITISH EXPATS WHO HAVEN’T DONE THEIR TAX RETURNS By Martin Rimmer, Tax Manager It’s that time of year again. The New Year(s) have been and gone, the deadline for filing your tax return has flown past in a flash, maybe even without you realising. As much as Her Majesty’s Revenue and Customs likes to remind us about the deadline, it’s easy to forget. Many are just too busy to take notice, or even to put on the to-do-list to try. Some of us are simply confused about whether we should be preparing UK tax returns or worse, are burying their heads in the sand and hoping for the best. Tax rules and circumstances often change as well, which only adds to the confusion. But it’s often a lot better to confront your fears and confusion and file a tax return correctly. And even though the deadline has passed, it’s not too late. At the end of the day, filing taxes correctly leaves you in good graces with the taxman and gives you better peace of mind. And ultimately many expats will eventually gravitate back to the UK and whether or not you have a complete and up-to-date filing history can impact how your tax position is presented to HMRC on your return. Here are 4 tips to help you if you haven’t done your tax return (and/or done it correctly) this year: 1. Ask yourself – “Have your circumstances changed?” You may need to file returns should your circumstances change. Expats who didn’t need to file tax returns a few years ago may want to check whether that is still the case today. 2.

Know your residence status – Surprisingly you cannot file a correct tax return as a non-resident of the UK using the HMRCs own on-line system. If you do use their system and don’t complete the residence pages, they will assume you are still a UK resident for tax purposes. Not great when you are trying to establish a track record of non-resident status. It’s worth taking professional advice as navigating the Statutory Residence Test can be complicated – the number of days (ranging from 15 to 182) you spend in the UK, and where your children and spouse are all feed into this.

3.

“Work is work” – Not always the case. Training, for example, is often not considered work, but managing a cross-border team and spending time in the UK could qualify. Some larger employers file this information to HMRC automatically – and it’s worth knowing if that is the case. What’s important is that you understand what is considered to be work by your employer, so you know what to file for duties performed in the UK, and whether the type of work you do impacts on your residence status.

4. Understand taxation on properties – Another common area for misunderstandings. Many of the expats we see rent out their UK property. The majority aren’t aware that most rental accounts must be prepared on the ‘accruals’ basis, rather than just by adding up income and subtracting expenses; not to mention the seemingly continuous stream of changes in how to calculate rental profit. If you have not declared your rental income at all, now is a good time to catch up with HMRC before they catch up with you. HMRC’s Let Property Campaign is an opportunity for landlords who owe tax through letting out residential property to get up to date with their tax affairs in a simple, straightforward way and take advantage of the best possible terms. Simply put, filing tax returns is just not always clear, and many fill in returns incorrectly or not even at all. This can lead to some serious penalties and hassle, so make sure it doesn’t happen to you.

CRAFT LADIES SECTION FUNDRAISING FOR THE GURKHA WELFARE TRUST

In May 2016, The British Club Craft Ladies Section contributed a sum of $3,000 to The Gurkha Welfare Trust which went towards the construction of a new home for Mrs Maya Thapa, widow of Rifleman Bhim Bahadur Thapa.

Building a New Home for Mrs Maya Thapa Widow of Rifleman Bhim Bahadur Thapa, ex 6GR Bhim Bahadur Thapa enlisted into the Brigade of Gurkhas in 1948 and, after basic military training in Malaya, joined 6th (Queen Elizabeth’s Own) Gurkha Rifles on operations in Malaya. He was discharged from the Army in 1954 after being medically downgraded and returned to his home in Dhading district, Nepal. In receipt of a welfare pension until his death in 1991, the pension was transferred to his widow, Maya, who carried on living Devastation in Dhading in the family home, using the pension to support her eldest son and his family. after the earthquake

The extra deep foundations for Maya’s new home

Though adjacent to Bagmati district and Kathmandu, Dhading is particularly remote with a poor infrastructure of roads where the steep terrain makes it difficult to traverse the country other than on foot. It was in this grindingly harsh environment that disaster struck in April 2015. The 7.8 magnitude Gorkha earthquake, with its epicentre barely 50 miles from Maya’s village, caused extensive destruction throughout the district and her mud mortar house was severely damaged. In the ensuing aftershocks, the house collapsed and Maya took refuge in temporary shelter. The Trust’s welfare officer, mindful of her predicament, as well as that of other vulnerable pensioners in his area, arranged for shelter material, as well as emergency rations and cooking equipment, to be portered out to the village and it was in a rudimentary shelter, constructed of corrugated iron and bamboo, that she spent the next 18 months. The Gurkha Welfare Trust then arranged for a surveyor to inspect the damage to her house; this was condemned as unsafe and arrangements were made to rebuild to the Trust’s design. Construction of the new home started in January 2016, one of the first homes on which work began once the Trust’s field office switched from delivering emergency aid to a programme of long-term reconstruction. Early on, the site was visited by the Trust’s Deputy Director, who had been appointed to lead the earthquake response and, given the difficult terrain, he further arranged for a visiting UK structural Ap ril 2 0 1 6 a n d a l most the re , engineer to check construction in order to satisfy himself that the exacting earthquake resistant though the 2016 monsoon delayed the final completion until August standards were being followed. In May 2016, when the Field Office in Pokhara was informed that that The British Club Craft Section wished to sponsor a build, the decision was taken to attribute this generous gift to the construction of Maya’s house. In the following months, which included a particularly heavy monsoon, work continued but building was finally completed in mid-August. Once the monsoon cleared, the Area Welfare Officer visited again and arranged for a plaque to be fitted to mark the Group’s generosity, explaining at the time to Maya that The Gurkha Welfare Trust had only been able to rebuild her home with the help of supporters from a country she would probably never visit but who nevertheless harboured a deep affection for her, her late husband’s service and the sacrifices made by the many Gurkhas who served in the British Army. Maya is grateful to The Gurkha Welfare Trust for looking after her in the years since her husband died but asked if we would pass on her particular thanks to The British Club Craft Section and its supporters in Singapore, whose generosity has allowed her to recover from the trauma of the last 18 months and live safely with her family in their new home.

Maya’s completed home photographed in October 2016 together with the plague marking the donation that made it all possible

The Craft Ladies Section meets every Tuesday in the Treetops lounge at 10.30am. They sew, quilt, knit, crochet, and do paper craft. Sometimes members work on their own projects, and hold different workshops. The group is made up of people with different levels of expertise so it is not difficult to find someone to help you with your projects. If you are interested in joining the Craft Ladies, come have a coffee and a chat with them on a Tuesday. You will be welcomed with open arms.

“OUR WAY” by Raelene Tan

APRIL FOOL!

Why is 1 April called April Fools’ Day? Various theories abound, though a common thread has it related to a change in date of the New Year in the Roman calendar, back in the mid-1500s. Then, New Year celebrations began on 25 March, continuing for eight days until noisy festivities on 1 April brought the event to an end. When the New Year date was changed to 1 January, those folks who absent-mindedly celebrated on 1 April were jokingly called ‘fools’. Nowadays, April Fools’ Day is simply a day to play harmless pranks, serving as a reminder of the original New Year. Tradition has it that pranks are to be carried out before midday, with lots of fun and laughter. As a student, I remember teachers being favourite targets; sticking a hand-crafted donkey’s tail on the back of a teacher was par for the course, or a sign stating ‘kiss me’. Publications, radio, television and personal devices also get in on the act, still today. One of the best stories I remember was the BBC hoax about spaghetti-trees, in the 1950s. Then, pasta was relatively unknown in Britain (except in canned form, with sauce), and viewers were transfixed by watching people harvest strands of spaghetti from a spaghetti-tree in a European country. Good wholesome fun! During my childhood, I looked forward to mother preparing the quintessentially British dessert gooseberryfool on 1 April, full of cool creaminess, which still brings happy memories even now. MEMBER IN THE SPOTLIGHT 23

MEMBER IN THE SPOTLIGHT For this issue of Member in the Spotlight, we are most pleased to present G. Kannan, his wife Su Anne, and their two boys. Kannan joined the Club with Su Anne in August 2016. He is a Senior State Counsel with the Attorney General’s Chambers in Singapore, while his wife is an in-house legal counsel. We find out more about their views on life since joining The British Club in this special interview.

1) Having been in with us for almost half a year now, can you tell us what was it that impressed you and made you join The British Club?

We live near the Club and a friend who is a Member has had us over a few times. We finally decided to arrange for a Club tour and we were charmed straightaway by the genuine warmth that we felt from the staff and other Members, as well as the family-friendly vibe. The facilities are great for a family with young children, and we signed up right away at the end of the tour.

2) What do you love most about The British Club?

Guinness on tap at the Windsor Arms! Seriously though, we have to say that the friendliness of the staff throughout the Club has really impressed us. The staff really do live by the Club’s promise to give you a warm welcome when you arrive, a magic moment during your stay, and a fond farewell when you leave.

3) What motivated you to join the legal industry in Singapore?

I’ve been a lawyer for over 20 years and can’t see myself having done anything else…except maybe playing right wing for Manchester United! The practice of law is intellectually stimulating, there’s never a boring moment, and that’s probably why I became a lawyer, and have stayed in the profession all these years.

4) Can you share with us a little about being a Senior State Counsel?

I’m actually a Deputy Public Prosecutor handling the prosecution of criminal cases in Singapore. Over the years, I’ve prosecuted cases ranging from the theft of one can of beer (stuffed down the accused’s pants!), to rape, drug trafficking and murder. I currently specialise in prosecuting cases involving cybercrime. Stay calm and catch that hacker...

Fresh green apples, toffee and a hint of nuttiness. This is the taste of distilling slower than anyone else in Scotland, of barley we dry by air – never peat – and of hand-selected sherry casks crafted from European and American oak.

Lemon zest, toffee apples and a scent of coconut. Our signature sherry wood brings intensity and richness, while first fill bourbon casks add fresh notes of citrus and vanilla.

Complex depths and bright tropical notes – with a spicy oak finish. Hints of candied lemon and pineapple reveal the influence of first-fill bourbon casks, balanced by the rich intensity of our signature sherry wood.

BLACK COW PURE MILK VODKA TASTING Friday, 21 April • 6.30pm to 10.30pm • Windsor Arms

Situated on England’s West Dorset coast, the world’s only Pure Milk Vodka™ is made entirely from the milk of grass grazed cows and nothing else. Fresh whole milk makes an exceptionally smooth vodka with a unique creamy character. Pure Milk Vodka™ is the invention of West Dorset dairy farmer Jason Barber. His inspiration came from a desire to diversify the produce from his 250-strong dairy herd and his deep personal interest in vodka. The milk is separated into curds and whey. The curds are used to make cheese, the whey is fermented into a beer using a special yeast that converts the milk sugar into alcohol. This milk beer is then distilled and treated to their secret blending process. The vodka is then triple filtered and finished, before being hand-bottled. Join us this April as we put together a Black Cow Pure Milk Vodka Tasting at the Windsor Arms.

Herdade São Miguel WINE & GOURMET DINNER (Portuguese) Friday, 28 April

$98.00+ per Member • $108.00+ per Guest Portuguese wine is the result of traditions introduced to the region by ancient civilizations, such as the Phoenicians, Carthaginians, Greeks, and mostly the Romans. Portugal started to export its wines to Rome during the Roman Empire. Portugal has a big variety of local kinds, producing a very wide variety of different wines with distinctive personality. Herdade São Miguel Winery Sao Miguel Wines - Casa Agrícola Alexandre Relvas is one of the main wine companies from Alentejo, the land of cork. Managing 350 hectares of vineyards and producing 3 million bottles per year. Alentejo is best known by its extremely differentiated climate, its unique, natural beauty and the purity of its inhabitants. The region covers about a third of Portugal, and winemakers in the remaining two-thirds can often be heard complaining about the popularity of Alentejo wines. We are happy to have Mr Rui Cunha with us this month to share with us their wines. Rui has been involved with his family wine growing farm activities since at a young age and had the opportunity to join a Portuguese winery in 2005.

GLADSTONE ESTATE WINE & GOURMET DINNER (New Zealand) Friday, 19 May

$98.00+ per Member • $108.00+ per Guest We are very happy to have Christine Kernohan, Owner and Chief Winemaker of Gladstone Vineyard with us this month. Christine is the Chief Winemaker, involved in all stages of winemaking, and manages the businesses of Gladstone Vineyard. Established in 1986, Gladstone Vineyard was the first of a cluster of boutique wineries established on the old riverbed of the Ruamahanga River at Gladstone, east of Carterton in the Wairarapa. As one of the only three Scottish women winemakers in the world, Christine ‘fell’ into the wine industry after a happenstance visit to Gladstone Vineyard with her husband, David one spring weekend in 1995. In February 1996, Christine and David Kernohan took over the vineyard. Both born in Glasgow, Scotland, they immigrated to New Zealand in the late 1970s with their young daughters Lyn and Gail. Christine took on the dual roles of Managing Director and trainee winemaker while David continued his role at the School of Architecture in Wellington, alongside weekend wine sales and quality control at the vineyard. Christine is currently a board member of the NZ Wine Growers Board, and a member of the Marketing Committee. She was also a past Chairman of Wairarapa Wines and Wellington Regional Winegrowers Association. She was a speaker at Altaya’s Passion for Pinot event, Hong Kong in 2012. SPORTS & FITNESS 51 FOOTBALL:

FOOTBALL REPORT

By James Morris

The 2016-2017 first team season is on course for a nail-biting finish with Mark Saurin’s squad currently sitting top of the league with five games to go. The last time the Club won the Equatorial Football League was back in 2007 when Antony Litherland led the charge. Club legends John Ray, Bill Morgan, Andrew Marshall, John Rennie, Guy Mason, Stephen Mangham and Bill Palmer were all part of that championship winning squad. How time flies, however, one thing for sure that does not change is how the Football Section continues to be a vibrant, fun and most enjoyable part of The British Club. It is not just about the first team and winning matches – far from it. Keeping fit and well hydrated, as well as the social side and having banter with people from all walks of life is at the core of the Football Section (we do have some characters). Playing a game with the right shaped ball is also a massive draw to Football.

Title-chasing 1st XI before their 4-3 win over rivals Rampant Casuals

We also have two competitive Vets team captained by Nick Challoner, Paul McNamara and Bill Palmer/Steve Clark who continue to plot the downfall of many an opposition for the second team (tacticians in their own minds!). Back to the last 10 years, well I thought I would share some of my British Club Football ‘Magic Moments’ and what makes playing Football so enjoyable. So in no specific order: • The North v South intersection game played at the National Stadium in 2009. The score was 2-2 after extra time with the South winning on penalties. Despite the result going the wrong way, it was a top night. Not many of us can say we have played in front of 60,000 empty seats! •

Talking of North v South, I do love the stats that the North are winning the series 7-to-5. Next game is on the Marina Bay floating platform on Tuesday, 18 April. Kick-off is at 7.15pm and is set to be a real humdinger.

The British Club Football tours wherever we go. Who will forget Grant Hall’s cold in Ho Chi Minh (2014), Sparticus in Phuket (2008), Candy in Phnom Penh (2010), Mr. Bump in Bali (2012) and the surf dudes also in Bali...It goes without saying there is a lot that is forgotten on tour and I am sure that will be the case when the touring team visits Phnom Penh again at the end of March to lock horns with Bayonne Wanderers.

Post-match beers at Scores. This has become very much a part of the Football Section ritual - long let it continue.

Midweek matches at the Padang beating the SCC and a few beers with team mates and friends at Stumps Bar. A sort of theme running here.

4.15pm on Saturdays - pre-match brew, kit bag ready, vat of water and boots polished.

So there is plenty to look forward to. If you are not currently playing Football and want to join our section do get in touch and we shall get you involved. We have fixtures all the year round and we are always looking for new members to join to bolster the squads. The next report will include insights from our first team skipper (Mark Saurin) and hopefully an update on the1st XI’s charge to the title.

52 SPORTS & FITNESS GOLF:

GOLF SECTION HAPPENINGS By Dick Burton Later this month we are holding our first ‘inter-sectional’ Golf Tournament, an event that’s open to the entire membership. We will play a ‘Scramble’ format where each team comprises a flight of 4 (or 3) players with each player playing his or her own ball. After the players have driven off, the team selects one of the tee shots and all players then play their next shot from where the selected ball has come to rest. This continues until someone holes out and that score is counted for the team score on the hole. This format is fun, particularly if you are a casual golfer who enjoys a birdie opportunity. Come and join us for this relaxing day trip to Tering Bay Golf & Country Club in Batam. Sign up either as a team or individual golfer and we will do the rest. Our 2017 Golf Tour will be to Phuket in June. We have chosen Laguna as our base and encourage those keen to play on Phuket’s world-class courses to join us and bring their families to enjoy the relaxing resort living. If you are keen, please indicate your intentions early so that we can block appropriate accommodation and consider the program of seasonal non-golfing activities. February Stableford at Keppel Club and Horizon Hills Golf & Country Club. Fourteen golfers participated in the February Stableford as we enjoyed wonderful spring weather. Kenny Cowgill and new member Greg Atack took the Honours and booked their places in our year end Champion of Champions event at The Els Club.

SPORTS & FITNESS 53 SQUASH:

DEMOCRACY IN ACTION By Andrew Vine The Squash Section’s two main annual tournaments are the Club Championship and the Handicap Tournament. The great thing, of course, about the handicap competition is that anyone, in theory, is in with a chance. And so with the usual enthusiasm the tournament got underway late last year with Charlie Thomas hoping to defend his crown. After two rounds (the wise ones having exited left to the Plate competition) the final four were Charlie Thomas (having beaten Craig Telmer and Andrew Marshall) vs Showbhik Kalra (who beat James Pickles and James Bauly) in the top half, and Matt Gyde (conqueror of Ernest Tan and number 2 seed Simon Bird) vs Evann Tan (who put away Damien Glendinning and number 3 seed Ben Carpenter). The semi finals saw convincing wins by Charlie and Evann, and the stage was set for the big showdown - would the 15 year old wonder-boy be the one to seize the trophy? On finals afternoon, we started with the plate. That final saw Liam Douglas pitted against Nick Fell. Liam came out firing on all cylinders quickly leading 2-0. Nick looked a little ruffled and found the form to pull back one game, but Liam, with youth and a few handicap points on his side, was looking to be the winner and that’s how it ended.

Mr Squash & The Future of Squash

Plate Finalists, Nick & Liam

The main match of the afternoon was all about great expectations. Evann has been steadily improving and is now part of the Singapore national junior squad. Charlie, almost 30 years his senior, had to take this challenge very seriously - not only was he fighting youth, he was also giving a massive 12 points to his rival, which left him needing more than twice as many points to win each game. The first two games went to Evann 11-4, 11-6. Surely this was his match! Not so fast, said Charlie! He dug deep into his box of tricks, fought back from behind to take game three 11-9 and the fourth 11-8. Had momentum swung in Charlie’s favour? The final game was the best of the lot. Evann’s handicap advantage was extinguished at 3-3, and that seemed to be it for the youngster, but the game was then neck-and-neck right up to 10-10 until, with a final burst of effort and concentration, Charlie won 13-11. Evann’s challenge was brave and spirited, but congratulations go to a true competitor and now 10-times winner of this competition. Well played, Charlie.

SPORTS & FITNESS 55 RUGBY:

PLAYER IN THE SPOTLIGHT

By Simon Goodman

“You can watch Rugby, you can coach rugby, you can talk about rugby and you can read about rugby – but nothing can beat playing rugby. My advice to anyone who enjoys the game is to play it as long as you can, because you’re a long time retired and you don’t appreciate how good it is until you can’t do it anymore.” Jim Renwick (52 caps for Scotland, 1972 - 1984)

The team at the trophy ceremony winners of the Vets Plate

“P.I.A.P.D.” Nick O’Brien (5 caps for the British Club, 2016 - present)

Why did you decide to make a comeback? I played rugby all through my school days, but once I left, I always regretted not finding a club and continuing to play. In the last few years I had encouraged my 15-year-old daughter to play touch and would regularly go and help and support her training and matches. When I heard the Club was starting a Rugby Section it was a now or never moment, and signed up immediately. How difficult was it? I’m approaching my 50s, and if it wasn’t now it would never be. My last competitive full-contact match was in 1986 – 31 years ago! The hardest part is one of the main reasons for joining – fitness. The training sessions consist of a healthy dose of shuttle runs, pad work, sprints with some skills thrown in. It’s hard work! On Saturdays we play sessions of touch and Fijian touch before collapsing back to the bar in Scores! Thursdays is for contact training. On training and touring One of my biggest concerns was wondering what it feels like to take a hit after so many years. Once I landed on my back a few times, wondering whether I was able to stand, it all comes back and the spirit takes over. The Section entered the Bali 10s last year after we had only been up and running a few months. Standing on the pitch before the whistle blows on a competitive match was a big mix of emotions, but again, when the ball is in play I forgot the worries and threw myself into it. I am proud to say that I was part of that team; fantastic camaraderie, like minded teammates, and support at every corner. And we came away as winners of the Vets Plate! An amazing achievement. What happens after the games when you’re on tour? It stays on tour! How does it feel having done it? One of the best decisions I’ve ever made! It’s a mix of playing, fitness, social and family fun. I would encourage anyone, of any age (I am by no means the oldest!) to come and join in, you will not regret it. So what’s next? As a section we have started discussing the next tour, the Jakarta 10s. We are planning a number of social events: the Sevens hits Singapore in April and we will have guests including the return of Dan Norton to give some training and insight, we will be holding a couple of events and dinners based around The Lions Tour with special guest speakers, and something around the Super 18 later in the year.
