Dear Members, A warm welcome to those who may have returned from their summer breaks and for those who have not, I hope you are enjoying the holidays. First of all, I would like to congratulate the GM, Sean Boyle and his team for their efforts throughout the Best of British celebrations in June. It was a week of exciting events showcasing all things British, including arts, fashion, sports, businesses, and food. The Club has raised $76,000 for its two charities and it has been a pleasure to have been part of these celebrations - I am already looking forward to next year! If your business is looking for new sponsorship, please do not hesitate to contact Sean and his team, who will be more than happy to help. During the Grand Finale Dinner, the British Club was awarded the Exclusive Club of the Year 2014. Sean was awarded the General Manager of the Year for the Exclusive Club category and the Mountbatten Room was awarded the Best Fine Dining Club 5 Star Club Restaurant in South East Asia 2014, by the National Critics’ Choice. It was a proud moment for everyone at the Club. Congratulations to Sean for the well-deserved award and to the team for a fantastic effort! In September, the Club will be hosting a 10-day Peranakan Festival to celebrate the culture’s beautiful art and culture, entertainment, and food. This will take place from Friday, 26th to Saturday, 4th October. A special Peranakan Night will mark the last day of the festival (in place of the Red, White, and Blue Ball) and I encourage everyone to get involved and enjoy the unique culture and festivities! Dear Members, In the month of June, we celebrated the Best of British 2014 and have garnered much positive feedback from our esteemed Members, guests, and sponsors. I want to say thank you to all Members for their tremendous support. We have a special showcase of photos from these events in this issue. We were also pleased to raise $76,000 for our two nominated charities (Riding for the Disabled Association and the Gurkha Welfare Trust). Cheques will be presented to them at our next Member Connect Night in September 2014. Do not miss this opportunity to stock up your wines! Also for the wine enthusiasts, there will be two Wine & Gourmet Dinners taking place in the Mountbatten Room in August and September. In August, I am delighted to have renowned chef Carmine Costantini as our guest chef. He will be preparing the evening’s dinner with all ingredients harvested from his farm in Yea, Melbourne. The special menu will be paired with some great wines. In September, Concha y Toro, Latin America’s principal wine exporter and one of the most important wine brands, will be bringing in specially selected Chilean wines to pair with our delectable menu for the evening. Coming up in late September on the 26th, we have planned a special 10-day Peranakan Festival. Celebrate this beautiful culture and indulge in all things Peranakan including arts, traditions, entertainment, and food. The festival will culminate into an exciting Peranakan Night on the 4 October. The Peranakan night will replace the annual Red, White, and Blue Ball; so do book early to avoid disappointment! For this issue’s Member in the Spotlight feature, we are pleased to feature Elizabeth McEneaney. In this exclusive interview, she shares with us a glimpse of her life in Singapore.
A glimpse of my professional life... I am Executive Assistant to His Excellency, the Irish Ambassador to Singapore, a role which I very much enjoy. We have a great team, and each day presents a variety of activities, from arranging Embassy events to helping Irish citizens here in Singapore, with a wide range of queries. We recently bid farewell to Ambassador Joe Hayes in May and I look forward to welcoming Ambassador Keating in August. A glimpse of my personal life... I am married to Alan and have three great kids, Nathan (16 years old), Sarah (13 years old), and Kimi (5 years old), who are all attending Tanglin Trust School. I am the President of the St. Patrick’s Society of Singapore, of whom the British Club is a great supporter. The Society has been active in Singapore for over 89 years, and has been the heartbeat of the Irish Community here. Run by a committee of dedicated volunteers, we aim to provide a truly Irish warm welcome to all who are interested in being part of our vibrant and flourishing society. We organize events and support for the members of the Irish community in Singapore, and are proud to have the Irish Ambassador as our patron. Check out our new website www.stpatssingapore.com When I am not working, you would probably spot me: Walking with friends, shopping or sitting by the pool at the British Club. My favourite restaurant in Singapore: Crossroads Café, at the Marriott Hotel on Orchard Road where you can combine good food, good wine, and great service while watching the world pass by! My favourite holiday destinations include: Sri Lanka and Cambodia – both countries provide a huge range of things to see and do, even for grumpy teenagers! My hobbies... I enjoy walking with friends, reading, planning and more importantly taking holidays and Friday evening drinks at Muddy Murphy’s always a good way to end the week! I am attracted to the British Club because: of the range of options available and the sense of familiarity. It is an easy place to visit and be comfortable on any occasion. When Alan is travelling for business, I know I will always be able to meet friends at the Club for a good chat! An absolute must for visitors. My favourite restaurant at the Club is without doubt the Mountbatten. A fabulous treat any night of the week!

What to look for in a Singapore based Financial Adviser? By David Pugh
With our busy expatriate lives, hounded by persistent cold calling salesman, it is difficult to know where to turn for sensible and transparent financial advice. With this in mind, we have compiled a simple checklist of the key criteria to consider in selecting a Singapore based financial adviser for the long term. We hope it will guide you towards receiving good quality and reasonably priced financial advice.
1. Regulated
5. Transparency of fees, commission and charges
Both the company and the individual should be regulated and licensed in Singapore by the Monetary Authority of Singapore (MAS) if they are providing financial planning advice to Singapore residents. If they are not regulated and or licensed, they are working illegally. For the UK expatriate, with a link or possible return to the UK in mind, seeking advice from a global company with a UK regulated and authorized parent is also advisable.
The basis of your adviser’s remuneration for their services, be it commission, fees or a combination of both, should be clearly explained in writing. There will also be charges associated with any recommended investment or insurance provider and these should also be clearly explained in writing including commissions, exit costs and lock-in periods. Beware of agreeing to any contract requiring fixed payment time periods as there will be cheaper and better vehicles available. And of course, there is a high correlation between the adviser’s commission and the investment provider’s costs. Unfortunately the amount of commission paid will influence unscrupulous adviser’s recommendations.
2. Well established A website showing the office address, full contact details and with the advisers names listed, preferably with a short biography. This supports the facts that the company is well established and fully regulated and the advisers are based in Singapore for the long term. Ask when the company founded and how long have they been providing advice to expatriates in Singapore. You should also be able to read testimonials from a range of past and current clients to confirm the company has a long term track record of providing quality advice. A company with global exposure will provide you with a continuity of advice and support when you move away from Singapore and/or return to the UK.
3.Experienced and professionally qualified A very basic level of qualification is required by MAS for individual financial advisers to gain a license to provide advice in Singapore. Additional qualifications, over and above the minimum required, such as the Certified Financial Planner (CFP) and the Investment Management Certificate (IMC) clearly differentiate one adviser from the next. As you may be seeking UK related advice (on UK assets or a UK return) advisers with high level UK qualifications may prove invaluable to ensure you receive UK standard, quality advice. Please do check your adviser’s relevant qualifications and how long he has been providing financial advice.
4. Holistic advice Seek firms who do not “sell” but offer true “financial planning” based upon a comprehensive review your overall financial objectives and needs. Advice should always be in writing and include a clear rationale for any recommendations. Ancillary services from the same company, such as tax advice and will writing, allow a tailored and holistic financial strategy to be designed for you rather than focusing on the sale of one product.
6. Talk to others One of the best ways to find a financial adviser is by talking to others. Check with friends and family or anyone else you trust for referrals.
7. Ongoing communication and good administrative support Your adviser should proactively contact you at least every six months to review your portfolio and changing needs. You should expect good administrative support with timely responses to enquiries.
8. Quantifies investment risk Your adviser should take time to explain to you the risks that are associated with investing. You should make your investment choices on the basis of identifying the appropriate level of risk which takes into account your investment horizon and the length of time you plan to save or may require the proceeds of your investment without large exit penalties.

The kids’ playroom - so ‘Mummy and Daddy’ get a moment to chat and enjoy a nice glass of wine and a pint of Old Speckled Hen!
Why & how you joined the BC band? I had joined the Music Section about three years ago after seeing the notice inviting Members to join at the BC notice board. The Music Section was then pretty much informal and “Jam Session” oriented - you brought in your instrument and played with those who were present that evening. Very often, there were musicians from outside the Club invited to support the jam sessions. What you hope to see in the band’s future? I am now back in the Music Section after a 2 years’ break. In my short three-month stint with the current set up, it is really exciting to witness the inherent high standard of musical talent of individuals in the group. The style of music presentation is as varied as the individuals presenting. This is particularly interesting as our varied performances will appeal to different groups in our audience. However, the real strength I believe of the current group who meet every Tuesday is the camaraderie shared during the time working together while pursuing our passion for music. This is to a large measure the reflection of the personalities and talent of the persons currently responsible for organising the Section as it also does bring out the best in all who participates. As a group, we now deliver a reasonably good standard of music. What is great about what we do is that there is always more to strive for. With the current more focused approach being taken at our rehearsals and the commitment of all who participate, the music we make moving forward together will become more “tight”, and I am certain will improve to a pretty high standard - truly appreciated by all. What is really nice is that the musical journey itself towards that end is going to truly enjoyable! What do you love about BC Club? I have been a member of the Club from the time of its ground-breaking, and over the years as a family from the time my children were small we have enjoyed the ambience and facilities of British Club being a truly a family-orientated Club… there aren’t many other such Clubs in Singapore.

Football Section’s 10th Anniversary Celebration The Football Section celebrated its 10th Anniversary on 31 May, Saturday, with a buffet dinner at the Verandah Terrace.
CONGRATULATIONS, FOOTBALL SECTION!! During the evening, Grant Hall, who is the Chairman of Sports Committee and Football Convenor announced he will be stepping down and leaving our sunny shores back to the United Kingdom in late August. We look forward to welcoming Grant and his family back to the Club for a visit soon!

“Some people think it’s all over, it is now” Grant Hall & James Morris
The Football Section has been rocked and shakened by the news that their Football Convenor, Grant Hall, is returning to England in late August to challenge for the soon to be vacant England Managerial role. Below is an extract from an interview by ex-Club Captain and all time top scorer, James Morris. The interview was taken in secret, no money exchanged and no betting syndicates were present. JM : So is it really true, are you going back to Old Blighty imminently? GH : Sadly, with a heavy heart but clear mind, it’s true. JM : What are you thinking?!? Are you allowed to leave your post as BC Football Convenor? GH : I’m hoping to slip away quietly but that has never really been my style...I don’t generally do things quietly. JM : How did you manage to get yourself in the position as Convenor? GH : Interesting question. A certain legendary barbed wire salesman, Andrew Marshall, convinced me to step into the hot seat as he wanted to spend more time at the Monty Python School of illegal throw-ins, that was 6 years ago. JM : What have been some of your highlights of not only being Convenor but also playing in the Football Section ? GH : Well, scoring from the half-way line was one, but I will not gloat about that. Also scoring from the halfway line, but I will not keep going on. Finally, definitely it was scoring from the halfway line. JM GH
: Anything else? : Signing up the Football Section to play at the fabulous Cage astro-turf pitches up at Turf City after inquiring what these diggers were doing on the fields and immediately joined in the owners’ vision of creating some fantastic pitches up there. 2 years on it now and our football has definitely improved!

: I see you have the Club record of going on most successive tours of 11, how do you manage that? : Well firstly I prefer to have that record rather than most goals scored. No, just joking. Our semi-annual tours are definitely the highlights for many in the football section. Having a big crowd at a Phnom Penh stadium, with many sheltered home children cheering for us, was very moving and motivational. I was also top scorer with 1 on the tour to Penang and enjoyed my victory cigar with Mark Billington on the Club’s first ever Tour win in Ho Chi Minh City. Many great memories from Bali too, especially Paul Hackett’s unfortunate visit to the hospital.

: As Convenor you have always shown great energy and ambition, can you explain your secret to growing the Section from 18 members when you took over to the 74 we have now? : Haha, well, having a Committee of passionate players, leaders and beer lovers has definitely helped. When I took over I introduced the culture of post match beers and banter back at Scores and put the match fees up to cover the costs, nobody complained ! I then reached out to other Clubs, Teams and Corporates for more friendlies and midweek matches so that we could play 52 weeks a year which, I’m proud to say, we do. Introducing a 3rd eleven and then a 4th eleven seemed foolish at the time but looking back we seemed to have got the timing right ! We now have 3 competitive matches and 3 different leagues every Saturday at 5pm as well as several friendlies for the over 40s and now, over 50s matches 3 times a year on the Padang vs the SCC !

: What else is going on in the Football Section? : We do a lot of charity work for our chosen section charity of Sok Sabay, a sheltered home for abandoned kids in Phnom Penh. We have had auctions, entertainment and, best of all, about 20 of us did the MOvember two and a half years ago raising a huge amount of money and laughter at the same time. You, James, was definitely something right out of “Those Magnificant Men in their Flying Machines”!!

: Anything else the Section does? : Sure, loads! Another highlight for many is the Annual Dinner, Dance & Awards night arranged by prolific player Guy Mason; we have had a James Bond theme, British Club has got Talent, 70s and MOvembers to name a few. We have various midweek socials, golf days, celebrations, matches against visiting Royal Navy battleships, North vs South on the Floating Platform, curry buffets and, just recently celebrated our Section’s 10 year Anniversary; beers, bbq, band and speeches around the pool attended by 150 people !

: Just before I ask you to name your favourite all time British Club Eleven, any final words? : I don’t like final words, my wife normally has them! Only joking Kuniyo! I just want to say that my 8 years in Singapore have been absolutely amazing and the BC Football Section has been one tremendous and healthy distraction where lifelong friends have been made, keeping most of us healthy and focused ! We have had so much laughter, very few tears, plenty of pontification at the post match beers and, best of all, playing better football as proven by the title winning 2nd X1 last season where I was the youngest defender in a back 4 that added up to 207 years!! Keep this Section alive, lads; I cannot wait to come back on a trip and play again!

I am picking my favourite players but definitely not, in most cases, the best players! Toni Diaz because “we were there when he finally scored”!! Jim Rowan, scared the life out of the opposition and most of us as well. Budgie, gave us all nightmares on and off the field. Darren Whatmore, amazing touch and scorer of great goals. James Morris, goal-scoring machine and tree planter on tours. Nick Groth, a true gentleman and defies his age by still scoring great goals on the break. GOLF SECTION HAPPENINGS By Nic Merrow-Smith
First up and the honour goes to our annual dinner, held at the Club on Saturday, 21 June. A pleasant evening in the Mountbatten Room with great food and plenty of quality wine artfully selected by Jonathan, where the only drivers were those kind enough to pilot us home and the only greens were on the side of the plate. As is customary, very little golf was discussed but we did marvel over the glittering silverware; the Championship Trophies, where the winners’ inscription for both the men’s cup and the women’s bowl, ends mysteriously in the year 2008. We would like to correct that if anyone can recall recent past winners. Sadly, we had to say farewell to Gavin Kramer who returns with family to the UK in the following weeks. Gavin took over the Convenor roll earlier in the year and his camaraderie and capabilities, not least on the golf course will be sorely missed. The Race to the Sarojin continued with a weekend game in Batam and the mid point will have been reached at Sembawang Country Club on Friday, 27 June. We will update you all on the halfway standings in the next report.
We even polished up the Club Championship Trophies for the evening.
May Medal The May medal was played at Palm Springs Golf & Beach Resort on the island of Batam on Saturday, 1 June. We were joined by 5 members of the Hong Kong Football Club Golf Society which rather boosted our numbers. This is not the first time they have visited us, but rather than play a match against them, we invited them to join in the medal game which was already in the calendar. Palm Springs is a great venue with 27 challenging holes, always in very playable condition and complimented by friendly staff and relaxed atmosphere. Our guests played some great golf and stole in to take the supplementary prizes, with the nearest pin prizes going to Dallas Reid and Jonny Brock playing off course handicaps of 8 and 5 respectively, whilst the longest drive was awarded to David Sheppard, for driving to the fringe of the green on the 245 meter 18th hole. Third in the medal on 32 stableford points was John Bussell, with second place going to Richard Holloway on 33 points. Our winner on the day with a steady 37 points was Nic Merrow-Smith, who managed to birdie the last two holes to steal the win. Honourable mentions go to Gary Sharma, from HKFC who chipped in on the par 5 17th for an eagle 3 and young Nicholas Holloway, who I understand is 12 years old, taking 4th place with a commendable 32 points and playing off a similar handicap to some of our regulars, put them to the sword. Monday Night Men’s Golf League
The joys of night golf; beers at 11pm for a very happy bunch.
The Monday Nights Men’s Golf League came to a fitting end on Monday, 26 May with 79 golfers taking to the greens across three divisions. Boosted by a rule that allowed each team to field up to six players, our British Club Teams A and B walked away with a whole host of prizes. Unfortunately the big one got away. British Club Team A were amongst the winners with Andy Hyndman securing 3rd place net in the Division C and Christian Philippsen securing 5th place net in Division A. Our Team B excelled on the night and tied for 2nd place. Both Gavin Kramer and David Meadows won prizes for longest puts, two players; Gary Cunning and Nic Merrow-Smith took the net score runner-up spots in their respective divisions, both shooting net 73 and each walking away with a Titleist Vokey Wedge. And with Andrew Affleck shooting a 75 net for 4th place, our Team B almost amassed enough points on the night to displace Expat Golf Network from the overall 2nd spot, but alas it wasn’t to be. Final League standings placed British Club B in 3rd place of 14 teams, on 1062.5 points, 2nd place went to Expat Golf Network on 1075 points, with Team ANZ coming in 1st place with 1100 points.

Random musings from an entirely random mind

A modest bunch of men with much to be modest about (with apologies to Winston S Churchill)
A famous former Australian Test captain (Ritchie Benaud I believe) once declared that on winning the toss one should bat. Occasionally one may think about inserting the opposition and then elect to bat anyway. Oh, if only such certainty could pertain to the captaincy of a social cricket XI. First there is the question of numbers, how many have we got present, how many have they got present. It is no good inserting the opposition if you have only got five players there at the appointed start time and it is not very nice asking the opposition to field if they have only got five. You have generally had the call from at least one player saying they’ll be an hour late (thanks Darshan!) and all this is before you consider the relative strengths of the teams and when and where you are playing. Will it rain later? Very possible in Singapore. Is it hot? A given, obviously. Many teams elect to bat for those two reasons alone, expecting rain and hoping it will cool later in the day (it never does). Captain Todd has developed a failsafe method for dealing with these decisions – he loses the toss (a virtual 100% record) thus condemning us to field first on almost every occasion. This the BC XI meets with equanimity as there are some things about the game far more important, which the opposition captain usually overlooks – beer! Batting second invariably gives first dibs at the beer and a dismissed batsman can immediately console themselves with a cold one, as generally do the hard working bowlers who are not overly concerned about their batting prowess. The demoralising effect this has on the opposition should not be overlooked either. Many a team has come off at the drinks break in the second innings to see the BC boys enjoying a beer and the realisation sets in they have still got 15 overs to bowl before they get one, which might be very important if supplies are not over-generous. This can have a disastrous effect on their morale and concentration, leading us to win in the bottom half of the second innings many a game we should not have. Of course the captain’s duties are far from over once the game starts. His opening bowlers are generally an accepted choice but after that it is all debateable. In a proper team everyone knows their role and place, not so the social team. Every decision the captain makes is likely to be questioned and the subject of criticism either immediately or subsequently. Luckily Captain Todd is a man of iron self-belief and is immune to the verbal barbs that come with the job. He is rarely flustered, even when three different people are attempting to set the field for him (your correspondent is occasionally guilty of this) or dealing with a batting order where six players want to bat at number 7. He has been known to banish himself to the far outfield however, instructing guess who to set the field for him. One of his better decisions that. A curious biographical note about Captain Todd is the fact that he was/is the last person in Singapore to fall victim to a Japaneseoccupation dug Punji Pit. For those not in the know and too idle to look it up, these are camouflaged pits to trap the unwary invader and usually contain sharpened poison-tipped stakes. Towards the latter half of last year Captain Todd was around Orchard Road with his son. Attempting to cross over the road he was unable to find his way via the underpass (well he is Australian) and could not be bothered to trek to a crossing point, deciding he would just cross where they were. Moving towards the road’s edge his son suddenly found he was standing all alone as Captain Todd silently vanished, seemingly into thin air. The anguished cry of “Dad, where are you?” was met by the muffled response of “Down ‘ere son” as Captain Todd languished in the pit. Fortuitously it’s been a long time since the Japanese occupation and the poison-tipped stakes have long since rotted away. Captain Todd therefore suffered only a broken finger and torn medial ligament, sufficient however to cause him to miss several weeks of the season and THE BRITISH CLUB

restrict his contribution when he did finally return. So please, be aware, around Orchard Road stick only to the paths the locals follow or you too could suffer the fate of Captain Todd. Mystery spinners – every team has one (except England of course). Sometimes the mystery is how they do not get called for “Chucking” but that’s an article all by itself. The BC have one of their own, the late Darshan Mehta (no, he’s not dead, he moves if you prod him, just not very fast) who has mastery over the twin forces of time and gravity. This allows him to propel a cricket ball in such a manner that it seems like it will never arrive but remain suspended in mid-air halfway down the track. Batsmen are reduced to gibbering wrecks, knowing not whether to stick or twist. Some run down the wicket, swish wildly (several times), miss, and then retreat to the safety of the crease. They are unlikely to be stumped as the keeper is unable to do anything until the ball passes the wicket, they could nip off for a quick drink, wander back and still be in time. Others pass into a form of catatonia and are unable to make any kind of a move to hit the ball. As wicket-keeper your correspondent has also suffered from these effects as concentration waivers whilst waiting for the ball, and the mind wanders onto more important things like “Will the wife pick me up tonight?” or “I wonder what damage she’s doing to the credit card?”. Many are the batsmen who have headed for the pavilion, confused after being dismissed, thinking there must have been some kind of cleverly disguised con involved. Only a few batsmen are able to switch to DST (Darshan Subjective Time) and prosper against his ability to cheat the laws of physics. Matches have been fewer recently but what we have had, we have won (and won well). Shortly it will be all on for the Vets League, maybe this year our season won’t turn to dust........ Remember, keep your hands together, let the ball come, and don’t snatch.

Diving in North Bali

Singapore is a wonderful place for the divers amongst us. Not only does Singapore offers South East Asia the largest marine bio diversity in the world, on top of that, most of the regional dive destinations are within easy reach from Singapore. A couple of hours flying and a car ride brings you to some of the remote islands or unspoilt beaches from where you can hop into the warm water and enjoy the underwater scene. A long weekend is often enough to discover some new dive spots and have a great time. Over the 1 May Labour Day weekend, the Scuba Section and FreeFlow divers organised one of those long weekend trips to Tulamben, home of the USAT Liberty wreck in the North of Bali. As most of our members are working, we make our trip schedules as flexible as possible. We agreed that everyone would meet at Villa Alba – the chosen resort - on Wednesday night. People arrived in the days leading up to Wednesday, and by night time the group was complete. It was a very heterogeneous group: there was Anthony who was going to use the trip to learn to dive, Ivy who is a seasoned recreational diver, Ed and James who are technical rebreather divers and even some non-diving partners. Thursday morning we all had a slow start: we enjoyed the breakfast with a view over the sea and discussed the diving schedule. We organised people with similar experience into groups, which makes it easier for the dive guides to choose appropriate dive sites. In this case we had a group of 3 less experienced divers, a group of 4 technical divers and some divers who hopped from one group to the other, depending on the dive sites. The first dive was the Villa Alba house reef: a sandy slope ideal for a checkout dive. We saw some pigmy seahorses on the reef, the local colony of garden eels; several ghost pipefish and a shark that came to check us out. In the late afternoon we did one of the signature dives of the area: the USAT Liberty wreck. The wreck lies in 30 meters of water, but most of the structure is above 20 meters, making it also accessible for beginner divers. Because it was late in the day, all the day tourists had gone and we had the whole wreck to ourselves. The rebreather divers made it an extra long dive and stayed down until well after sunset – turning the whole dive into a night dive. The local school of bumphead parrotfish showed up, as well as some napoleon wrasse, groupers and hunting moray eels. Later in the evening everyone drifted back towards the restaurant terrace to enjoy the Balinese Barbeque that Villa Alba put up for us. Over a few beers and with the sound of the surf in the background we discussed all the wild life spotted and admired the underwater photos taken. Over the next two days we developed a routine of eat / dive / rest and visited the dive sites around the resort. We all did the Drop-off: a spectacular land spit diving into the sea and a dive site that can be done deep or shallow. We did the Coral Garden: a dreamy shallow dive site with beautiful corals, a fully submersed Balinese temple and the wreck of a small airplane. We couldn’t resist and went back to the Liberty wreck on a daily basis: the 125 meters long cargo ship that sunk during WWII seemed to give up some of it’s secrets every dive. The non-divers enjoyed some R&R in the meantime with day trips, local snorkelling and massages as part of their day program. Of course the trip was too short: we all regretted that we could not stay a few days longer with Alex and Jessica, the friendly owners of Villa Alba, and we immediately started to chat about what our next dive trip would be. There are a lot of long weekends coming up!

Regular Scuba Section activities: Pool session: Members meet on the first Wednesday evening of every month for a pool session at the British Club pool. These sessions are overseen by an instructor and are the ideal time to brush up skills, take a refresher course or test some new equipment. Dry Meetings: The section meets every third Monday evening of the month for a ‘dry’ meeting at the British Club where we promote upcoming activities, members present recent trip reports, and we have a regular dive quiz or guest speakers from the dive industry. Dive trips: At least twice a month, we organise a 2-tank dive trip in local waters. These trips take place during the weekend and are very popular. Members regularly organise dive trips in the region. We also organise regular weekend live aboard trips in Malaysia and Indonesia.

Fancy learning to scuba dive? The Scuba Section and FreeFlowDivers are organising a BSAC Ocean Diver course, starting in the month of September. Lectures and pool sessions will take place during the evening, and the open water sessions will take place during the weekend. The BSAC Ocean Diver Course is an absolute beginner course: the course will provide the essential knowledge and skills needed to prepare for open water diving. Upon successful completion of the course, you will be able to do no-decompression dives up to 20 meters. Prerequisites for the course: •

LIFE ON THE OCEAN WAVE By The Boaster
The Boaster handed over the quill and parchment to acting SSRA captain Carl Jackson this month and, based on the below, may never get them back . . . Plunged into the Captain’s chair for the Anteprepenultimate game of the season, I was asked to navigate the dangerous waters around the SAFRA Triangle. Many games have been lost and countless soles have been destroyed against this tough competition. First to set sail was Peter, our very own wing-sail catamaran normally only seen sponsored by Oracle flying through the San Francisco bay. As often happens with high performance machines, it took some time for the all the high tolerance components to align, which resulted in a 9-11 loss in the first. Once the first buoy was passed however, Peter found his edge, taking the next 2 games 11-8. Before his opponent had chance to wipe the salt water from his eyes, Peter had raced past the finishing line with an emphatic 11-4 in the last game. Feeling sea-sick from the continual chasing of half-court cross-court hammer blows, Peter’s opponent was glad to get to the safety of the off-court terra firma. 3-1. Next to raise anchor was the luxury cruise ship Mansoor. No surprises to his shipmates, Mansoor took the first before his opponent had realised his ship has sailed...smooth sailing personified. Mansoor, unfortunately, felt the delayed reaction of a night at the Captain’s table for the second game, narrowly running adrift of his very young and agile opponent. A suitable tonic before the third game along with a master’s touch to navigate into a millpond ensured a smooth crossing to a 3-1 victory. There was clearly some concern among the SAFRA crew at this point, which was significantly compounded upon the arrival of the stealth destroyer HMS Fell. After cruising through the first 2 games 11-8, HMS Fell was forced by strong competition to move to a half-ahead cruise to finish off an 11-9 victory courtesy of an un-returnable drop-boast-nick in the starboard bow. Never close to thinking about flank speed, Nick looked like he had been out on a test run, not a drop of sea spray in sight after returning to port. 3-0. Amongst all this drama, I set sail in choppy waters in a rubber dinghy, losing my first 2 games. After a stern talking to from the stealth destroyer, inspired by the catamaran and sailing on the basis that cruise ships are a safe bet, I found a few horsepower to come through 3-2. Following our after-match beers, we overheard the SAFRA team discussing a name change to the more catchy ‘Bismark Club’-not sure if this name is already taken . . . whatever the outcome, the four British Club sailors will still be proud to have contributed in our small way to a very enjoyable Monday evening’s squash. Well done Carl and team. The British Club E-graders managed a solid mid-table finished in their league (a big improvement on last year) while the E-grade veterans were in the running for a semi-final spot until the very last rubber of their very last match but ended up missing out. The A-graders faded in the second half of their league as injuries took a toll, but enjoyed some good wins over the season. Those same A-graders have also been doing battle with each other in the section’s annual open tournament. Newly crowned tennis champion Charlie Thomas has secured his place in the final (again) and at the time of writing is waiting for his opponent to be determined – watch this space for the results next month. Finally . . . the tour. The magnificent seven of Carl, Craig, Jamie, Jan, Mansoor, Neil, Wing went to Manila for two matches. They returned as the following: Smutty, Boink, Pinkie, Big Balls, Ginger, Latex and Double Entry. The reasons for these names have been lost to history (or in Manila police department files), but anyone who can match them all up wins a prize. One match was won and one was lost and a spectacular time was had by all. Happy squashing!

Whenever I see swim training at the Club, I am always impressed by the quality of the swimming. You should all be very proud of yourselves. The newly opened OCBC Aquatic Centre hosted its first major sporting event – The TYR 2nd SEA Swimming Championships 2014 - in June. It provided the Barracudas swimmers at The British Club a great opportunity to attend an evening of world class swimming at this new facility. The Barracudas group left the British Club in a coach with their team t-sShirts accompanied by Coach Rolando and Coach Alain. Everyone had a brilliant time and had a lot of fun. Thank you to Total Swimming for organising and coordinating the event and accompanying the children. Thanks also to the Barracudas swimmers who were present and to the parents who attended.
