2 PRESIDENT’S MESSAGE MAIN COMMITTEE

Dear Members, Half a year has passed, it seems, in the blink of an eye and I hope that everyone has had a healthy and fulfilling 2017 thus far. In June, our annual Best of British celebrations helped to generate significant publicity and funds for our two adopted charities, Riding for the Disabled (RDA) Singapore and the Gurkha Welfare Trust. All in all, we managed to raise $65,000 for these two charities and to date $361,000, which would not be possible without the support of all our staff, members and sponsors. On behalf of the Club, I thank you all. Over recent years, catalyzed by extensive media exposure, we have all become amateur food critics and, in some cases, online reviewers. It has undoubtedly become a more difficult and competitive environment in which the Club must seek to please its members. However, I believe that a variety of quality food offerings in differing environments combined with the personalized service that only a Club can offer should have an attraction for everyone and I therefore encourage all members to make good use of our food and beverage outlets. Over the recent months we have been focusing on driving Membership sales. This is not a new thing but the unprecedented levels of members leaving the Club and leaving Singapore makes it a tough environment. Many of you will know of (or have benefitted from) the Member Get Member promotion and I encourage you all to think about introducing friends to the benefits of membership as we find that such new members often become the most supportive and frequent users of the Club. The Club is now offering complimentary membership of a sports section for three months. There are nine different sections covering everything from Cricket to Tae Kwan Do and all of the sections are specified elsewhere in this magazine. Section membership is not just for the competitive athlete as there are activities and benefits for all, including absolute beginners. What better way to get into a regular regime that will contribute to overall health and fitness? I am pleased to announce that this coming September will see the launch of a Wine Connoisseur and Gourmet Club. This section will host a variety of events and will offer many benefits. Please look out for more information in due course. On behalf of the Club, we thank you for your continuous support and wish everyone a great month ahead. DAMIAN R. HILLS President

5 TOP TIPS FOR SENSIBLE TAX PLANNING By Martin Rimmer, Tax Manager

Dealing with your tax affairs isn’t always a top priority and for many it may be that elephant in the room that no-one talks about. Either way, when it comes to your tax affairs, at some stage they will require some attention, and a little planning can go a long way. Here are five tips for UK tax planning which can help to get you started: 1. Make the most of your allowances

One way of minimising the amount of UK tax you pay is to understand and make full use of the various allowances granted by HMRC. These include the standard personal allowance, a new dividend allowance and personal savings allowance, and ISA subscriptions for UK tax residents. Other tax allowances such as married couple allowance may also apply as could other tax efficiencies, such as lower tax rates on Capital Gains.

2. Plan your Investments tax-efficiently Certain investment products allow you to control how much tax you pay and when. Offshore Life Assurance Bonds are one such way of investing that allow you to do this. There is no annual tax liability on investment returns whilst you are resident in the UK, and you can draw up to 5% of the amount invested tax-free each year. If you would otherwise have been taxed at higher rates in the UK on these returns, perhaps because of employment earnings, pensions or rental income, this is great way of making your money work more tax-efficiently. 3. Careful pensions planning

When it comes to your pension rights, it is vitally important to assess your options carefully. There are normally multiple choices available to you – you could move all your various UK pension pots into one scheme; you could transfer your UK pensions to a Qualifying Recognised Overseas Pension Scheme (QROPS, which now has a new tax of 25% introduced onto transfers since the last UK Spring Budget); or the best thing for you could be to do nothing. Seeking advice from an experienced financial planner can help determine the best course of action.

4. Think about succession and Inheritance Tax Planning

Having a valid will is the first place to start when it comes to succession planning – you will probably need one in the UK, as well as in Singapore. One ‘catch all’ recommendation for inheritance tax planning is to put life assurances under trust. This will ensure that you protect your spouse and children from unexpected inheritance tax, and can generally leave your estate intact.

5. Look into changing your Domicile

You may have the option of changing your Domicile. In a nutshell, this will remove foreign assets from UK inheritance tax at a stroke. This is, arguably, the best and most natural inheritance tax planning tool for those whose circumstances allow this. If you plan to retire outside of the UK and you settle there with the intention of remaining permanently, this option may be open to you.

While the above are only a very small selection of many available options, tax planning can make a big difference to your financial well-being. Working with experienced financial planners who understand you and your family, and the different approaches above, is an important investment well made.

ASEAN’S 50th JUBILEE

On Tuesday, 8 August, ASEAN’s (Association of South East Asian Nations) Golden Jubilee will be celebrated. The 2017 chairmanship (which rotates annually, alphabetically), held by the Philippines, has the theme ‘Partnering for change, engaging the world’. Current ASEAN members comprise Brunei, Cambodia, Indonesia, Laos, Malaysia, Myanmar, Philippines, Singapore, Thailand and Vietnam. The bloc’s flag depicts ten sheaths of rice (one for each member country) in a circle. The red, white and yellow design incorporates prominent colours from each nation’s flag. Our neighbouring countries offer a kaleidoscope of cultures, customs, sights and traditions. Negara Brunei Darussalam, ‘Abode of Peace’, on Borneo Island, is an oil-and-gas-rich Islamic sultanate. The Kingdom of Cambodia is well-known for Angkor Wat temple complex. Home to the world’s largest Muslim population, is the Republic of Indonesia. With its archaeological landscape, Lao People’s Democratic Republic is a draw-card for visitors. Our nearest neighbor, the Federation of Malaysia, has much to offer in its 13 states. One of the largest South East Asian countries, the Republic of the Union of Myanmar, ‘Land of Pagodas’, is well-known for gemstones. The Republic of the Philippines is the only predominantly Catholic country in Asia. Our home, the Republic of Singapore, needs no introduction. The Kingdom of Thailand, ‘Land of Smiles’, is the place for beautiful silk products. With its UNESCO world heritage sights, the Socialist Republic of Vietnam draws large numbers of tourists to its shores. ASEAN’s motto, “One vision, one identity, one community”.

20 ADVERTORIAL

HERITAGE TOUR

FULLERTON HOTEL

On Tuesday, 25th April, the Craft Group had an informative and enjoyable morning on the Heritage tour of the Fullerton Hotel The Fullerton Hotel located near the mouth of the Singapore River, originally The Fullerton Building, which was converted into the Hotel, opened for business in 2001. The Fullerton Building was named after Robert Fullerton, the first Governor of the Straits Settlements. The Fullerton Building was opened in 1928 after 4 years of construction. The construction was completed “under budget”: $4.1 million, instead of $6 million. The anchor tenant was the General Post Office. Before the erection of Fullerton Building, the “old” building had been used as the first General Post Office and the Exchange Building since 1874. (The old building was established at the site of Fort Fullerton, a fort built in 1829 to defend the settlement against any naval attacks.) The Building had 5 founding tenants: The General Post Office, the Exchange, Singapore Club, the Marine Department, and the Import and Export Department. It also housed the Chamber of Commerce, and various government departments dealing with agriculture, fisheries and forestry. The Post Office occupied the two lower floors with postal halls, offices and sorting rooms. Mail would drop and fall to the basement which was connected to a 115 feet “tunnel” to the Pier, where mail would then be transferred to ships to send overseas. The exclusive Singapore Club occupied the upper floors of the building where their members dined, socialise in the lounge, held conferences and played billiards and cards. There were bedrooms providing accommodation for members. It was a “hiding place” for British officers during the war with Japanese. The “notorious” Club was evicted in 1961. The Building has been used as a hospital during WWII by British soldiers. It then became the headquarters of the Japanese military after 1942. The Inland Revenue Authority of Singapore had used the building as its headquarters for 20 some years before the Building was converted into a Hotel. Our guide Bill was very enthusiastic and informative. At the end of the tour, we were gifted with a lovely morning tea Singaporean style with Kopi, kaya toast, and various types of colourful exotic flavoured sweet morsels called Kueh. AND to be pampered even more, we moved on to lunch at the Jade Chinese restaurant (soon to have 1 Michelin star). Beautiful fresh dim sum and their own mix of Eight Treasure Tea in a stunning room with hand painted wallpaper. Written by Debbie Creighton. THE BRITISH CLUB

MEMBER IN THE SPOTLIGHT 21

MEMBER IN THE

SPOTLIGHT For this issue of Member in the Spotlight, we are pleased to present Joanne Furniss and her family. Joanne joined the Club four years ago after moving to Singapore with her husband and two children. She is an author and journalist who has worked for the BBC, The Economist and Monocle. Her debut novel, All the Little Children, will be released in September. 1) How did you hear about The British Club, and why did you decide to join us? This is our second posting to Singapore and as soon as I arrived back – with two toddlers in tow – I signed up. I knew the Club would be a hit with the kids and a social lifeline for me. My children learned to swim in The British Club pool and now they’re mastering tennis – they absolutely love their weekly lessons and look forward to every day of the sporting holiday camps. Also, I often come up to write in the peace and quiet of the balcony outside the Windsor Arms. 2) Can you tell us more about your line of work? I’ve always dabbled with writing fiction, but never took it seriously as a career option until recently. When my kids were very young and we were still living in Switzerland, I took a MA in Professional Writing. My final project was the opening of a novel and I felt it had potential, so I decided to make that my work priority for a while. The “while” turned into several years—there are no overnight success stories in fiction!—but in 2016 I was signed by a literary agent in Chicago and the novel sold to a US publisher. Receiving my advance felt like a watershed moment – I could finally call myself an author. 3) What made you decide to make the career switch – from the exciting life of a BBC journalist to a freelance writer? It was exciting being a BBC journalist; I interviewed prime ministers and football players and an astronaut – even a guy who builds rollercoasters while we were riding one of his designs! Of course, there were also unglamorous night shifts and mornings spent standing in the rain holding a soggy microphone. But I was keen to travel so I took a sabbatical when my husband was offered a job in Cameroon. That was in 2002 and we never moved back to the UK, so I resigned my post at the BBC and went freelance. It’s been wonderful to have a job that I take with me to each country – journalism is a golden ticket that opens doors and brings down barriers, so I use it to explore each new culture. 4) Lastly, can you share with us something interesting that you are writing or have written? My debut novel is called All the Little Children. It’s a survival thriller that’s been compared to the novels Room and The Road, so there’s an indication that it’s dark and harrowing! It’s about a mother who has to protect her kids in the aftermath of a disaster. The main character is nothing like me, but there’s a lot of typical parental angst and frustration in there. Now I’m working on a second novel, which is scheduled for publication in 2018. The working title is Trailing Spouse and it’s set in Singapore. It’s about an expat wife who suspects her husband is doing more than business while on his travels. Not inspired by anyone at The British Club – honest! WINE TASTING WITH FREIXENET ESTATE Thursday, 7 September • 7.30pm onwards • Mountbatten Room $10.00+ Wine Connoisseur & Gourmet Club Member • $15.00+ Member • $20.00+ Guest Freixenet’s family history goes back to 1861, when Francesc Sala Ferrés started a business making and exporting wine to America. His original winery is still here today, lovingly restored by the current family, and it still makes small quantities of Cava – handmade in the original way. In the late 30s’, the Spanish Civil War claimed the lives of Pedro and his eldest son. This meant Dolores and her three daughters were left to run the company. One of the Dolores’s first decisions has pretty much affect all of us: in 1941, she introduced Freixenet’s Carta Nevada to the world. A delicious and desirable Cava in a distinctive, white frosted bottle, which definitely added the world beautiful to the fun of sparkling wine, quickly becoming a global icon. The fifth generation of the family now runs the company and like Francesc, they are committed to help you make every celebration extra special with their fine wines. We are happy to have Ms Alison Harvey with us to share with us more on the history of Freixenet. Alison started working in the wine trade in London completely by accident; as a language graduate struggling to find a job, an opening with a wine importer looked like a suitable starting point. In London, she worked in retail, wholesale and import and managed to work through all the WSET wine exams before moving to Melbourne in 1995. Alison spent 4 years at Domaine Chandon and then joined Wingara Wine Group, now the Australian branch of Freixenet. Another move in 2002 brought her to Singapore where she looks after Freixenet Group importers in S.E.A and Hong Kong. Freixenet is the world’s largest cava producer and also owns vineyards in Spain, California, Argentina, France and Australia.

Bodegas Altanza, located in Fuenmayor (upper Rioja) was founded in 1998 and was created with a clear, well-defined purpose: making quality, livelier than classical Rioja wines and marketing them at a fair price. All reds are 100% Tempranillo, the ‘queen’ of Rioja autochthonous varieties, and the most popular in Spain – though each area gives it a different name, is doubtless the Tempranillo because it gives wines a good body and structure. It has moreover a slower evolution than other varieties, which makes it ideal for aging. Although its derivation from pinot noir has been questioned, what’s certain is its descent from two varieties which were once at home in the Ebro valley. Their crossbreeding in the Middle Ages gave birth to the Tempranillo. It requires a cool, temperate climate

a relatively late budding, its berries develop faster than those of other varieties, hence its name (“temprano” means “early”). We are happy to have Mr Sherwin Lao, Southeast Asia and Oceania Manager of Bodegas Altanza with us this month to share with us the wines. Sherwin is also a writer for the first and only wine column in the Philippines at the Business World, aside from being a contributing writer to Hospitality News Philippines Magazine. ALCOHOL TASTING GLENMORANGIE SCOTCH WHISKY TASTING Friday, 18 August • 6.30pm to 10.30pm

Come and savour the finest of Glenmorangie this August at the Windsor Arms! With the tallest stills in Scotland at 8 metres high and with their long copper necks standing at 5.14 metres, it is the same height as a fully grown adult giraffe! This means that only the very lightest and purest vapours make it to the top, giving a smoother and more elegant tasting whisky. At Glenmorangie, only the finest oak casks are used to mature the whisky. But that’s not all, because the casks are only used twice for the Glenmorangie Original (whilst many others use theirs up to five or six times), it ensures that the maximum amount of flavour is always extracted during maturation, delivering a rounder and smoother taste. Glenmorangie Original

Glenmorangie Quinta Ruban

The original expression of our elegant, floral spirit and the real backbone of the Glenmorangie range. A ten-year old single malt, Glenmorangie Original is produced by marrying the delicate spirit that emerges from Scotland’s tallest stills, with first and second fill American white oak casks. It is here, the process of maturing for ten years in a range of ex-bourbon casks as our famous slow-grown and air-dried ‘designer casks’ from Missouri, that our raw spirit develops a perfect balance between sweetness and complexity. This results in a mature spirit that is soft, mellow and creamy.

The darkest and most intense whisky in the extra-matured range, Glenmorangie Quinta Ruban has spent 10 years maturing in American white oak casks, before being transferred into specially selected ruby port pipes from the Quintas or wine estates of Portugal. Extra maturation in these port pipes develops Glenmorangie Quinta Ruban into a voluptuous spirit with a complex balance of sweet and dry flavours with an intriguing contrast of smooth, crisp and cooling textures. Non chill-filtered will give you an additional aroma and mouth-feel.

Glenmorangie Lasanta

Glenmorangie Nectar d’Or

Elegant but full-bodied, this whisky has spent ten years maturing in American white oak ex-bourbon casks before being extramatured for a further two years in Oloroso and PX Sherry casks from Jerez in Spain. Lasanta is Gaelic for warm and passion, a reminder not just of the Spanish provenance of these Oloroso sherry butts, but also a reflection of this expression’s lusciously soft texture and deep enticingly sweet aroma.

“Great to see French casks that actually complement a whisky so rare! An exercise in outrageously good sweet-dry balancing” It is here, in hand selected wine barriques from Sauternes: the most famous and ancient sweet wine growing region of France, that this whisky develops its rich, spicy and dessert-like flavours. Non chill-filtered will give you an additional aroma and mouthfeel.

NEW Emmett’s Ham & Bacon Emmett’s is the oldest ham and bacon producer in the UK which has been in existence since 1820. They still operate and reside from their original premises in Peasenhall, a small village very close to the Suffolk coastline where all the ham production still takes place by hand and not by machine. Their signature product, for which they held a Royal Warrant for over 30 years to the late HM Queen Elizabeth The Queen Mother, is their Suffolk Black Ham. The ham is marinated for up to 6 weeks in a black porter beer marinade prior to being hot smoked for 2-3 days over oak shavings. The resulting product has depth, coarseness and plenty of flavour. All of the pork used is sourced 5 miles away and is 100% free range. The coastline is perfect for pig farming in that the air and soil is dry and not too heavy. They use only the leg for their hams and loins and bellies for their bacon. Their bacon is cured with natural salt and not artificial nitrates. The pigs lead a very relaxed life living outside all of their lives where they are able to root in the soil and to play. They sleep on dry straw and are fed a diet of natural wheat and barley. They are NOT fed any antibiotics or growth hormones.

Emmett’s Ham and Bacon is now available at the Windsor Shop.

SPORTS & FITNESS 57 SQUASH:

TOURNAMENTS AND TOURISTS By The Boaster

Rehydration

Open Champion 2017

Open Finalists 2017

In May, the squash section were fortunate to welcome to our courts a touring team from Hong Kong Football Club. There were 9 Hong Kongers and 9 of us, with the format involving two matches each, against different opponents – one with the new-fangled American scoring (a standard best of 3 to 15) and the other with the old British style (best of 3 to 9 – scoring only on your own serve). With home advantage (we are used to equatorial squash with no air-conditioning) and after the visitors’ overindulgence in some Singapore nightlife on Friday, The British Club got off to a great start and had a handy lead after the first 9 matches. Our guests began to find some form, however, and as the end of the afternoon neared, the score stood at 8-9 to the visitors. It was all down to the final match... which Ben Kiggell won 2-1 to even things up and give us the perfect result for this kind of fixture - an honorable draw. Curry, beers and good camaraderie were shared at Scores and we look forward to visiting Hong Kong for a rematch on an autumn tour. Earlier that afternoon, The British Club (and visitors) had been treated to an exhibition of exceptional squash as Simon Bird took on Charlie Thomas in the final of The British Club Open. Trying to prise that trophy from Charlie’s grasp is a tall order and it turned out to be too much for Simon as Charlie claimed the championship for the eighth time (to go with his 10 handicap crowns). Heaven help us when Charlie qualifies for the Masters’ and can aim for the Triple Crown of club titles. Well played Charlie, and well done Andrew Vine for another brilliantly run tournament.

Whether any of the teams come in first or last, the section makes a point to celebrate their efforts and perseverance throughout the season. This year, in addition to the celebration, we held a coaches’ exhibition – a well-played match between Coach Cyril and Coach Iverson! Our young players helped as the ball boys and girls and we had our very own sport commentator, Kate Burton, cheering with the crowd!

SPORTS & FITNESS 61 SWIMMING:

SWIMMING SECTION REPORT

by Tory Morris & Helen Tynan

If you had a Lane you had a Chance at this year’s annual British Club Swimming Gala which was held on the 18th June. We had over 90 children compete in over 60 events along with 60 fathers who competed in the Father and Child race. Although the weather tried to dampen our spirits we managed to complete all events including the popular Father and Child race and the Masters freestyle relay competition. We had all ages compete from the 4yrs & under category to the 15yrs and over category (which included the more mature Masters swimmers!). All participants received a Gala T Shirt. The mixed Father and Child events were as competitive as ever with 10 heats of races, every Dad hoping to do as well as possible for their child. All the kids seemed to enjoy their race regardless of their position and received a participation medal. The Masters section finished the line up with an intersection relay, lots of big dives and white froth was made as the teams tried to win a medal but never the less lots of fun was had. After the awards ceremony, the swimming section organized a feast of food and beverages for the children and parents to enjoy, including a barrel of beer for the thirsty fathers on their special day. A massive thanks to Total Swimming and the Sports department for organizing the gala, as well as to all the members and swimmers for your support for The British Club Annual Swimming Gala. Special thanks to the parents that volunteered to help time keep. On a separate note, we would like to welcome Rebecca Turley as our new swimming convenor for the Swimming section. Rebecca has been a member of The British Club for 3 years and have two children in the Barracudas squad. She is always around the pool and is very approachable so if you have any questions please feel free to reach out to her.
