PRESIDENT’S MESSAGE

Dear Members, Welcome to the month of April! Time flies and we are already into the second quarter of the year. It was a busy month at the Club with amongst other events, our annual Vision Day, a BC Open House and the Party by the Pool.

MAIN COMMITTEE

Steve Settle President

Shaun Matheson Chairman of Ways & Means Committee

Tony Quek

The Main Committee and the Club Management had a very productive Vision Day, discussing ideas on how to move the Club forward. We will prioritise what needs to be done and I will be pleased to share the details with you in the months to come. The BC Open House was held on Sunday, 16 March, and lots of potential Members took guided tours of the Club (despite the long awaited rain) and had a good look around at all of our terrific facilities. I am very pleased to see Members bringing along their friends and making personal recommendations to join us – you are truly our best brand ambassadors and we are more than happy to reward you if membership sign ups follow! On 18 March, Tuesday, we invited our esteemed sponsors to the launch of the Best of British 2014 and I would like to take this opportunity to welcome the new sponsors to our Club. This year’s sponsors to date include Cognita, British Airways, Courts, Jones Lang LaSalle, Kingsley Squire, MINI, Resorts World Sentosa, Rolls Royce, Royal Plaza on Scotts, Starhub, The Body Shop and The Fry Group. The GM and his team have been working hard to ensure the upcoming Best of British celebrations will once again be a roaring success. Details of the celebrities who will be joining us and a schedule of the various activities will be available shortly. Get your tickets early - it’s going to be an exciting month of June! We thank you for your continued support. Have a Happy Easter and I hope to see you around the Club soon.

GM’S MESSAGE

Dear Members, Hope you had a great month of March, giving yourself the opportunity to indulge in some of the many activities hosted at the Club. I would like to firstly welcome our new Human Resource Manager, Alice Wong, to our family. Alice joined us on 24 February, Monday, and brings with her a wealth of experience which I am sure would add strength to the team. The hospitality industry is facing some challenging times, and to have Alice on board is great. In the past couple of months, we have been steadily building up the Club’s presence in the world of social media. Please do join our community on Facebook, Instagram, and LinkedIn, and feel free to tag the Club for any relevant posts. You can view the links on page 16. We recently hosted Chef Forlino Osvaldo, one of Singapore’s top Italian chefs at the Mountbatten Room. In less than 2 week, the wine dinner was fully-booked! It was a wonderful evening and something quite special for all guests present. All I can say is we certainly want to put on more of such evenings – so watch this space! Coming up this month, there are many exciting programs planned for everyone. For the children, on Sunday, 20 April, join us at Build your own Bunny craft session and our popular Easter Egg Hunt. On the same day, there will be some great lunch buffets including seasonal offerings such as freshly baked hot cross buns and Easter chocolates. At the end of the month on Friday, 25 April, Mountbatten Room will be hosting the Codorniu Raventos Wine Dinner, book now and get ready for an indulgent evening of exquisite food paired with delicious wines. We are pleased to have our The Fry Group as the main sponsor of this evening. As mentioned by the President, we have recently concluded the launch of The Best of British 2014 (photos available in the next issue). I am happy to see the great support and enthusiasm from our generous sponsors. There is much anticipation in the air as the Best of British celebrations are just two months away, do expect plenty of fun times in the weeks to arrive. We have a great line up of celebrities from the world of fashion, culinary, sport, art and entertainment – don’t miss it all! Look out for more details that will become available shortly, including the Grand Finale and Show to be held on 14 June at the Pan Pacific Hotel. Meanwhile, have lots of fun at the Club this April, and wishing one and all a Happy Easter.

COUNTDOWN WITH PETE PRICE BACK FOR BEST OF BRITISH 2014 With every season, the brand grows in popularity and their pieces are now both collectible and sought after. Worn by a whole host of celebrities including Kelly Rowlands, Katy Perry, Lady Gaga, Jennifer Lopez, Nicole Scherzinger and Helen Hunt and the English football WAGS to name but a few. As the brand grows, so too does their following encouraging Philip and Tony to strive for excellence in their field and excite their clients with every new look. Pete Price (centre) with designers Philip Armstrong (left) and Tony Burke.

Hi Everyone, It’s me again – on countdown to The Best of British!

Harvey Nichols is their latest shop window. They are both so excited about visiting Singapore. When I told them about the glamorous, exciting and fashion conscious women who will be at the finale of The Best of British, they started creating a collection especially for you!

I want to tell you about the fashion part of the festival. When Sean Boyle said – I want to fly someone from England who is How can you see their collection? Where can you purchase exciting and new to Singapore – for me, there was only one their gowns? We are pleased to say that Robinsons Singapore has agreed to be our fashion partner and showcase Philip choice - Philip Armstrong. Armstrong at their store at The Hereen during the Best of British. When you see what he creates, how he glamourises women In addition, the clothes will also be showcased at the Ladies – he brings the best out of them and creates a look that turns Luncheon at the Club and the Grand Finale Dinner at the Pan Pacific Hotel. Watch this space! heads. So who is he? Philip Armstrong and Tony Burke are the designers behind the label Philip Armstrong. The pair met while studying fashion design. Their joint passion for fashion and design proved to be a formidable combination and after 5 year’s experience in the industry, Philip and Tony collaborated on their first collection. Their unique style with a cutting edge focuses on cut and detail and was very well received – the Philip Armstrong label was born to high acclaim from the fashion press.

I would also like to congratulate one of the partners of The Best of British – British Airways who have soared to the top of the Best Brand List in Britain beating the likes of Rolex, Coca Cola, the BBC, Microsoft – the list goes on. They are the first airline to top the list and it’s a wonderful achievement only brought about by hard work and strive to give their customers excellent service and quality. Congratulations to this world famous UK brand. The Best of British is really taking shape. I can’t wait. See you soon, Pete Price

MEMBER IN THE SPOTLIGHT

Mr Hugo Walkinshaw Principal, Deloitte Singapore President of British Chamber of Commerce Singapore As part of a new feature on Members of the Club, we are pleased to feature recently joined Member, Hugo Walkinshaw and his family. Principal at Deloitte Singapore and President of British Chamber of Commerce Singapore, Hugo Walkinshaw, originally from the New Forest in the south of England is a passionate Hampshire cricket and rugby fan, a Southampton football fan, and a sailing fan. He arrived in Singapore with his family in 1995 for what he thought would be a two year stint and never left. Here he shares with us a glimpse of his life in Singapore. How did the family settle into Singapore? Our three children were all born in Singapore, so this is very much their home, and they have been here all their lives. I think the challenge for them is how they cope with the UK when we go back each year on holiday….! When did you join the Club and reason for doing so? We only joined the Club this year, which may seem a little odd given that we have been here for so long… We have lived for most of our time in Singapore over towards the East of the island, and to be honest the British Club was not so accessible for us, so we opted for the Polo Club where my oldest daughter and wife both ride. As I changed roles in the Chamber and engaged more with the High Commission, UKTI and British Council, I began to spend more time at the Club and it was only a matter of time before it became the right thing to do to join. Many thanks to Steve Settle and Sean Boyle for making it possible, I still owe you a dinner….! What got you interested in supporting the British Chamber to the extent, you are now their President? I joined the Chamber board in 2007, when I was asked to come in as Treasurer to help sort out the Chamber’s finances. Part of me wanted to put something back into the community and the other part was conscious that many of my colleagues were investing time and effort in not-for-profit activities while I wasn’t. I really enjoyed the network as well as the opportunity to contribute. The opportunity to work with previous Chamber Presidents like Terry O’Connor, Steve Puckett, and High Commissioners Paul Madden and Antony Phillipson, has been a privilege and a pleasure. As time went by I became more involved both as a board member, as well as part of Exco, and subsequently became President in May 2013. It continues to be a tremendous learning experience and one that I value highly and am hugely fortunate to have. Can you share a little bit about the Chamber’s 60th Anniversary? It doesn’t seem that long ago that we were celebrating our 50th anniversary, and the fact that we are now celebrating our own Diamond Jubilee hot on the heels of the recent celebrations for Her Majesty the Queen is a hard act to follow! We have lined up several events this year to commemorate this occasion. Our celebrations began with our Annual Sterling Members and Sponsors Dinner last month at which we launched our 60th Anniversary Logo, which now appears on all our communications materials. We will be following that with the launch of our new website in April, which will provide a much more responsive and comprehensive knowledge sharing platform for our members and sponsors. In August, we will be running a special edition of the Orient magazine focused on how the Chamber has grown since 1954 alongside some of the long serving and well established British companies. The High Commission is kindly hosting an official 60th celebration for us in April at Eden Hall which we will include senior representation from the British and Singapore governments, as well as the last decade of Chamber Presidents. We will be seeing the 60th theme headlined in our flagship events such as the Annual Business Awards, 60th Anniversary Ball as well as all other events. We are also in discussion with Sean about bringing the 60th celebrations to the British Club for a Members’ event, so watch this space.…. THE BRITISH CLUB

What’s your/family’s favourite past time/hobby in Singapore? It is different for everyone… For my oldest daughter Amber it would be anything to do with horses, for my son Harry would be all about rugby and cricket, and my youngest daughter Ella has taken on the role of bossing the rest of the household around, at the ripe old age of four she most definitely likes being in charge. My wife Julia was formerly a food, wine and travel writer, and continues to be active in the wine circles, I am now looking for something to do to fill the gap after giving up coaching rugby at TRC, which I did for the last six years, albeit I’m enjoying my Sunday morning lie-ins again. Please recommend top 3 must-haves for your family in Singapore? That’s a tough one. For us, I think it’s mainly about our friends, our home and our hobbies – we have built up a wonderful collection of friends over the last two decades, and that is a large part of why we continue to live in Singapore, so building those networks through schools, Clubs, work and neighbourhoods is really important, even if you think you are only going to be here for two years (it doesn’t always pan out that way!). In terms of home, it was always very important to us to have a stable, comfortable place we could call home, so finding the right location that works for everyone in the family is also important. Take the time to find the right place, and put access to the workplace lower on the priority list behind access to school, Clubs and fun. We are lucky to have been in the same place for the last ten years and it’s very much our home, which has given the children stability as they have grown up. The third musthave for us is hobbies – between us we participate in a broad range of activities, and I think Singapore is pretty unique when it comes to the variety of things to do. Add that to the easy access and all year round outdoor lifestyle, it makes it a pretty compelling place to raise a family.

Making sure your expat life is covered By David Pugh

When you move overseas your lifestyle changes, your currency changes and so too does the amount of cover you need from your life insurance. While it’s a subject most of us avoid, how your family survives financially should you die or are critically ill is definitely one you need to consider. Types of policies Insurance policies you should consider include critical illness cover and life insurance. Critical illness insurance will pay out a lump sum if you are diagnosed with an illness or condition such as heart attack, stroke or cancer. The lump sum can help pay for care or treatment, or to cover any lost income as a result of the illness. Different policies will cover different illnesses so check before you take out a policy. Taking out life insurance is the easiest way to guarantee your family will be protected financially. In the event of your death, your insurance company will normally pay out a lump sum in two ways: to pay off large debts or provide an income for your family to live on.

Research and review Once you have established an adequate level of cover, with the help of a professional, it should be reviewed annually. To find out about insurance policies that can protect your family it’s a good idea to get some financial advice. A financial adviser will be able to recommend the most suitable products to leave your family prepared for the future. Questions you should ask an IFA or financial adviser • Is there more than one type of policy that would serve my needs? • Will the cost of my premiums go up over time? • Will cover continue if I move back to the UK or elsewhere in the world? The Fry Group Life Insurance Special Offer for British Club Members

As a British Club Member you can enjoy a complimentary onehour consultation with one of The Fry Group advisory team, a complimentary follow-up insurance review report and up to 25% Underinsured expats discounted rates for the purchase of a life insurance policy*. To Most professionals, particularly expats, have life insurance take advantage of this offer, call us on +65 6225 0825 or email provided by their employer. This is typically 3 to 4 times your advice@thefrygroupsg.com quoting reference BCINS1. salary. While this may sound like a lot of money, you would be surprised at how much more your family actually needs. In fact, *terms and conditions apply it is not unusual for an expat to need up to 10 or 12 times their salary once you factor in mortgage repayments, international school fees, university tuition etc.

It is the oldest family business in Spain and the 5th oldest winery in the world. A documentation from 1551 shows that Jaume Codorníu owned vineyards and was operating a winery in Sant Sadurní. In 1659, Anna de Cordorníu and Miquel Raventós married bringing the two winemaking families together and creating the foundations for the winery as we know it today. More than two centuries later in 1872, Joseph Raventos, one of their descendants, made the first bottle of sparkling wine using the traditional method – this would later become known as Cava. Apart from being the cava creators, Grupo Codorníu Raventors owns some of the world oldest and most prestigious wineries and vineyards in La Rioja El Priorat (since the XII century), Mendonza Argentina and California Napa Valley. We are happy to have Mr Paco Gago with us to share with us the history of the oldest family business in Spain. Paco is the appointed Brand Ambassador for Grupo Codorníu Raventós in South-East Asia.

SPORT & FITNESS Tennis:

SECTION WRITE-UP By Nousheen Jalal, Liza Rotwan and Sarah Smith Join the Ladies’ Tennis Ladders The ladder is a monthly organised tennis social event that any lady who belongs to the tennis section can sign up for. The Ladies Doubles Ladder currently has 68 members. The Singles Ladder just started for the first time in February this year with 16 keen players. Ladder rounds run from February to November, with a social tournament (and lunch) held in December. Players may join at anytime throughout the season. Just email sports@ britishclub.org.sg. At the start of each month you will receive an email from me with names of three ladies when you participate in the Doubles Ladder. Together you will make up the group for the match for that month. A captain is nominated to coordinate the time, day and venue the match will be played at, book the court, organise for another member to bring new balls, and then report the scores to the Ladder Coordinator on completion. Captain’s duties are rotated throughout the season as fairly as possible, so everyone has about 3 turns per year. For the Singles Ladders, you play best of 3 sets. If a third set is required, then it is played as a tiebreak only. All games are played with sudden death on the second deuce. You will have one singles match per month. You are awarded 3 points if you win in 2 sets, 2 points if you win a set and the tiebreak, and 1 point for 1 set won. Points are determined by the number of games individuals win within their group. You play one set with each player, playing 3 sets in total during the match. Points earned in the month determine who you will play with during the next month’s round. Groups are formed from participants with the same or similar points earned from the previous month. Points are accumulated over the year to determine the final rankings, and ultimate ladder queen in December. If you are unavailable to play at any time, then you will receive 0 points for that month. It is a fantastic way of meeting a whole bunch of lovely ladies from differing levels of tennis. Above all the Ladder is about having fun and laughs along the way, with a bit of exercise as a bonus. Don’t delay any longer, join us.

Junior Tennis goes from strength to strength We completed the SMASH tournament in February, a new tournament to Singapore that encourages top U-12 players to continue with match play and training in-between the KLM Junior league seasons. Three teams were entered by the Club, and did us very proud! The KLM tournament started on February 15th with our biggest entry ever of 10 teams! Kids from the British Club are playing all age groups with two teams in U-10, three teams both in U-12 and U-14, and another two teams in U-16. We are now midway through the KLM season so await further news on how the seasons ends for our young players. We continue to train and get younger kids involved (aged 10 and under) and encourage them to get involved in matches as soon as they have some experience behind them. If your under-ten child is interested at all in racquet sports, please contact the Club Tennis section so they can develop their skills in preparation for match play with the Club. On 14 March, the Junior Tennis Gala took place poolside – a social extravaganza for all tennis playing kids at the Club and their families. Junior tennis is about enjoying the game and building a community of friends – join the tennis section for family fun on and off the court.

SPORT & FITNESS Golf:

GOLF SECTION HAPPENINGS By Nigel Spry & Nic Merrow-Smith

The year continues with lots of golf activity and our “squad” active or committed to various competitive outings. The Monday Night Men’s Golf League is one example. Organised by Heartlands Golf Schools at Jurong Country Club, the league is proving popular with a regular field of over 70 golfers representing 16 teams who tee off together at 6pm and finish under floodlights. If you’ve never played night golf, you should join us and try it. The British Club has put out two teams led by Steve Settle and Gavin Kramer. The competition is ferocious and often

of a very high standard. Nevertheless, our guys have been picking up individual prizes along the way, Oliver Stoffel for longest putt and Nic Merrow-Smith for best divisional gross. Both teams look forward to improving on their respective team placing as the league progresses. March saw the 1st leg of the Inter-social Club Golf Tournament (ISCGT) initiated by Country Clubs without a green. This saw the British Club strategically teaming up with the American Club to field a 12 strong team covering 3 divisions. Photos and results next month.

JCC night golf experience is truly wonderful, and yes, the fairways are lush even after 6 weeks without rain.

February Medal

Results

Sunday 23 February, our first weekend event of the year. By arranging the medal on the Sunday rather than Friday, we had hoped for a larger turnout and we were not disappointed. We had a fantastic turnout with a total of 21 players including section Members and guests. If you prefer to play golf on Saturdays or Sundays, then look out for more of our weekend games later in the year. We were able to keep costs down too, by selecting an easy to reach venue in Johor and car pooling.

February Medal Venue: Tanjong Puteri Golf Resort

So we converged on Tanjong Puteri Golf Resort on Sunday morning to tackle a course where the ball would run for miles due to the lack of rain and the greens were in their usual pristine condition and not giving anything away. Our second stableford competition of the year ended with two runners up on 35 points, Patrick Jenkins and Gustavo Espinoza. The winner of the medal with 36 points was Colin Allcard. Unfortunately, there was a problem setting up the novelty holes and the prizes sponsored by Urban Fairways will be rolled over to the next event. For the first time this year, we used our section handicap system to calculate course handicaps. Members are encouraged to update all their golf scores to the system and to request an account if you do not already have one.

SPORT & FITNESS SQuash:

THE COMPETITION NEVER STOPS By The Boaster

For those readers who have been suffering sleeplesness, anxiety attacks, night sweats and elevated blood pressure (which sounds like The Boaster after most squash matches) agonizing over last month’s quiz, your pain is over. Here are the answers : (a) The section Member who ran the New York marathon in 3:52 was . . . our very own convenor, Craig Telmer. Yes, really. (b) Two squashers who have climbed to the top of Mt Kilimanjaro . . . Ben Kiggell (when young and fit) and Karen Niedermeyer (an amazing effort after suffering a broken neck, back and ribs in a horrifying accident – well done Karen!) (c) The two-sport professional athlete is . . . Charles Ewart who played both rugby and cricket professionally (as well as being rather handy at squash, tennis and probably everything else). (d) Our gold medal winner is . . . David Hogg who has represented both England (with whom he won the medal, beating Australia in the final) and, more recently Singapore, at Masters (over 40s) hockey Back on the squash court, competition is in full swing on many fronts. The SSRA leagues have started with our veterans’ team winning their first match on countback thanks to wins by Jan du Prez, picking up in SSRA where he left off in Cosmo and now on a 5-mastch winning streak, and Nick Fell. The Club’s Masters’ (45+) and Grand-Masters‘ (55+) knock-out tournaments are underway and we have a fresh round of boxes on the board featuring a new idea – a premier box involving all the section’s A graders and which one lucky mortal will get to join each round as a reward for winning the previous round’s box 1. BC President Steve Settle is the first one to take on the elite, so if you’ve seen him looking a little frazzled around the Club, you’ll know why. See you on court! THE BRITISH CLUB

FOOTBALL:

Why play for the BCFC?! By Mike Thornton

The late, great Bill Shankly once famously said, “some people think football is a matter of life and death. I assure you, it’s much more serious than that”, if the British Club FC had a motto, this would surely be it! It’s Saturday, it’s 5pm, It’s Turf City, it’s been what we have been waiting for ALL week and for anyone considering joining the BCFC this is why! 08. Ability = Who cares?! No matter what your ability level, no matter whether you are Maradona or Morris we have a team you can play for! 07. Enjoy the fresh air Stuck in an office all week – this is your chance to get out! Singapore has great weather, well at least for 6 months of the year so why not take advantage of it! 06. Be a part of a team! The BCFC have great camaraderie, no matter win or lose, no matter what is said on the field, once it’s all said and done, grab a beer and have a laugh with a good bunch of guys. 05. Fitness & Exercise We run training at The Rainforest on Tuesday nights at 8pm as well as mid week and Saturday matches, why not rediscover that famous pace or skill you always tell your colleagues you used to have... 04. Fathers & Sons We PRIDE ourselves in the BCFC of being able to offer fathers & sons the opportunity to play together – its great for family bonding. 03. Discover or rediscover your love of football We all play football because we LOVE IT; it’s a highlight of our week to play and a privilege to do so on excellent facilities. 02. TOUR BCFC head off on tour 2 times per year and it’s an excellent weekend to ‘”recharge the batteries” with a good old fashioned “guys weekend”, we all have commitments during the year so take advantage of 2 weekends to let the hair down. And finally…… 01. Lasting Friendships In an area of the world as transverse as Singapore, it’s an excellent opportunity to make real lifelong friends…really!

A sad farewell. With the above being said, we say goodbye to one our friends Ross Stalker, a long serving stalwart of the BCFC who is leaving us…hopefully not for too long. All at the club wish you the best back in the UK but hope to see you back in Singapore soon! So anyway, why not give it a go….the BCFC are looking forward to a great 2014 season and to sum it up, as Ron Atkinson put it, “I’m going to make a prediction – it could go either way”. Cheers! – Mike Thornton SINGAPORE’S HILLTOP RETREAT
