A new year (and new decade!) is a good time to review your finances. The following checklist includes some important aspects worth considering: 1. Your tax obligations
YOUR 2020 FINANCIAL PLANNING CHECKLIST By Huw Wedlock
Ensure you are up to date with tax reporting, residence status and your HMRC listed contact information. When overseas, an accurate record of visits to the UK is vital to support any claim to be UK non-resident, and you must keep abreast of local reporting requirements and tax implications. If you have non-UK resident status and have tax liable to UK income or gains, you can’t use HMRC’s online service to complete a Self-Assessment Tax Return. Instead, you will need to send your Tax Return by post and use commercial software or seek professional help. If posting complete the ‘residence’ section (form SA109) to confirm your status. 2. Understand changes around UK property In the last five years, there have been changes to UK property taxation with more scheduled for April 2020. Therefore, it is sensible to know what applies, if you own any UK property and live abroad. Check that you have a valid valuation for your UK residential property, elect a Principal Private Residence (PPR) and is recording any time spent in the property. 3. Ensure you have an up-to-date Will Wherever you are in the world, a valid Will is necessary. When living overseas, it’s useful to have a Will in all jurisdictions where you hold significant assets (property in particular). Also, set up a power of attorney who can make financial decisions if you or a loved one is unable to do so.
a UK non-resident. Inheritance Tax allowances are rising significantly this year, meaning that a married couple could pass on a property worth up to £1 million before attracting Inheritance Tax. 5. Check your personal protection The watchword is to be prepared. Although no one enjoys considering such things, it’s important to check you have adequate life, income protection and critical illness coverage. 6.
Review financial goals
Take stock of your investments to ensure they still reflect your aims and objectives and risk profile. Over time, priorities change and you may need to consider a range of circumstances including school/university fees, paying off your mortgage, and funding your retirement. 7. Keep your investment strategy tax efficient Your overall investment planning should be tax-efficient. If you are planning to return to the UK, consider your investments and the effects of UK Capital Gains Tax in advance (6 to 12 months is preferable). And when you return to the UK, ensure you use any allowances such as Individual Savings Accounts (ISAs). 8.
Consider your pension
Many people enjoy time abroad during retirement years, so its important to understand what pensions you have – whether they are UK-based or elsewhere - and the options available. If you have concerns or questions about your finances, it’s useful to get in touch with a financial planner. Whatever this year brings, I wish you a prosperous, fulfilling and exciting 2020.
4. Use your allowances An annual Inheritance Tax exemption of GBP3,000 is available on a ‘use it or lose it’ basis, allowing you to make lifetime gifts to intended beneficiaries. When overseas, consider gifting assets free from UK tax while you remain as

Winning Letter After being a Member of the British Club for a few months, I’d like to make a commendation to the staff at the club who I believe is making the best burger in the world! .... The Angus Beef Burger is good, and we’re happy with it. We’d say that it is comparable or just slightly behind Beef and Liberty. But when they introduced the Windsor Gourmet Burger… Wow! That’s really a very nice burger, and it sits at the top of our list now. Love it! This burger is now our benchmark whenever we try out other burgers and so far, we have not had one burger that comes out on top of the Windsor Gourmet Burger. Diana who is not a fan of burger also enjoys it and usually is the one who will first comment that the other burgers are not as good as Windsor Arms’. Please congratulate the team who made this possible, we really enjoy our visit/time at the Club, and being able to have that burger at the Windsor Arms is a real treat for the family! – Noel S. (Windsor Arms)
The British Club has long considered The Club’s employees as one of its biggest assets. Stand to win $50 F&B credit every month when you share your dining experience with us. As a regular diner in many 5 stars hotels, I can say that tonight’s meal exceeded the Shangri-La, Raffles and The Fullerton by miles. – John G. (Mountbatten Bar & Grill) Wonderful evening. Thank you very much.
Alok, Charles & Steph, all excellent as usual.

Just wanted to commend Chef Sunny on the new breakfast menu. We have breakfast three times a week at least and such a breath of fresh air! I’m bringing class Mums for breakfast next week. VERY ENJOYABLE. Can’t wait to try the rest of the new items. Well done! – Jane L. (Verandah Café) The new breakfast menu is refreshing. Nice to see some new items. – Nicole W. (Verandah Café) I’m back in England and still dreaming about your food. Your Claypot Chicken Curry was the best I’ve ever had, cannot get one over here to taste like yours. – Brian P. (Scores) 8 |

IS IT TIME FOR A RESOLUTION RESET? Four tools to help you get your New Year commitments back on track
What if you could start your New Year’s resolution again? The statistics are not promising and chances are, if you set a New Year’s resolution, then you are already well on your way to breaking it. In fact, less than 10% of all New Year’s resolutions actually last the distance and by the beginning of February, nearly 60% of resolutions will have already failed. That’s a lot of broken promises and, perhaps more importantly, it’s an awful lot of unconscious and destructive selfcriticism, belittlement and blame. So, what’s happening here, year after year: do we enjoy beating ourselves up? Or are we simply making resolutions that aren’t right for us? I believe the issue is simple: most resolutions are doomed to fail because we are choosing them for the wrong reason. February is the time of year when most of us give up on our New Year’s commitment. That makes it the perfect time for a Resolution Reset. So, throw off that sense of failure, reconnect with your inherent resilience and amazingness and let’s explore how you can re-choose a resolution for yourself, right here, right now, that you can actually keep: 1. Get your timing right In modern society, we have become absurdly attached to man-made concepts of time. But just because the calendar has ticked past an arbitrary date, it doesn’t mean you, as an individual, are in the best space to create something new. Before you even attempt to set a resolution, become more mindful of your daily experiences and the natural rhythm of your life right now. Are you in a state of ending and clearing (lots of goodbyes, things fading out of your life, apparent road blocks)? Trying to begin something new when your life is in a natural ebb state is like trying to plant a seed in the deep-frost of winter. There are a number of new year celebrations around the world — such as those in February, June, September and November — so if your life is not ripe for new commitments, change or adaptations, don’t get hung up on the Gregorian 1st of January. Simply wait for another, more conducive date to step into a ‘new you’.

FEB 2020
2. Be clear about your intent
4. Choose to be, rather than do
Here’s my tip: if you use the word ‘should’ when describing the reasons behind your New Year’s resolution, then it will almost certainly fail. The word ‘should’ carries with it a sense of resistance and invites in struggle, resentment and ultimate disappointment.
We live in a world obsessed with doing and, often, our resolutions are based on what we can achieve in a physical sense: join a gym, learn the guitar, spend less time on social media etc. But the easiest resolutions for us to maintain are those that focus on who we want to be: kinder, more assertive, more mindful, more optimistic etc. When we resolve to be something new, or greater, we place full responsibility in our own hands. And if we truly want to be something new, we will find ways to grow, adapt and evolve, and achieve our resolution.
In contrast, when you commit to something because you want to, you are fully aligned with the decision: body, mind and soul. You will have the determination you need, the energy you require and the willpower to see it through. The resolution reset is a great opportunity to get clear about what you ‘want’ for yourself. (Not what society wants; not what your parents want. What you want.) Of course, what we want for ourselves and what others want or expect from us are not mutually exclusive. The important thing to understand is that it’s not about the what of your resolution, it’s about the why. Do you believe you should lose 5kg because it’s an appealing number on your bathroom scales … or do you want to eat more nutritionally because you’d love to feel more energized? Do you think you should stop wasting time on social media feeds … or do you want to nourish yourself more often with inspiring activities, surroundings and conversations? Make sure you have the right intent when setting your goal, as this will help you maintain a higher level of enthusiasm and commitment in the months ahead.
As we step further forward into 2020, it is very likely that you have already left your resolution behind. But don’t let that fuel a misplaced sense of failure, hopelessness or self-admonishment. Know you are an incredible creation of nature and, given the right circumstances, you are designed to thrive and succeed. Simply take the time, now, to reset that resolution and make a promise to yourself that is heartfelt, authentic and ignited from the flames of your true desire.

3. Only focus on the things within your control It’s all well and good to say ‘I’m going to change my job by the end of the year’, but in doing so, you may be setting yourself up for bitter disappointment. You can’t control the current job market, or the decisions of others. What you can promise yourself is that you will explore every employment opportunity, or that you will up-skill, or you will believe in your abilities more unconditionally. When conducting a resolution reset, make sure that you don’t commit to a goal that is out of your control. Keep the focus solely on you; your decisions, your actions and your attitude.

Swimming in love
Jamine and Kenneth have been coaching the Club’s swimming section for 6 years and they were recently engaged! Congratulations to the couple!
1. How long have you worked with The British Club? We started working here during our university days, so it has been about 6 years. 2. How did you meet? We met each other in university. 3.
How did i get into coaching? Both Kenneth and I started out as competitive swimmers, from then, we developed an interest in coaching. By God’s grace, Coach Alain spotted me coaching elsewhere and invited me to join The British Club team. After that, I pulled Coach Kenneth into the coaching team. It was one of the best decisions made in our coaching career!
4. I assume you love to swim? Do you dive too? Yes, I do love swimming and I dive too! On the other hand, Kenneth enjoys playing tennis and cue sports! 5.
What is your favourite memory at the club? Is it meeting each other? Getting to know Kenneth better when we started coaching at the Club before getting together was definitely one of my fondest memories, but we were very fortunate to be able to watch the kids, enjoy, grow and graduate from the class. Having them call out to us, and giving us hugs even after they graduate is one of the most heart-warming moments we experience!
6. Nicest thing a member has said/done for us? It was suprising when we came to know that some of the members join The British Club just so they could enrol their children into our swimming class and be under our coaching. One of the members even told me that she continued her membership with the Club because her child had developed the love for swimming under our coaching through all these years!

10am to 11am

The British Club Ladies Tennis
The British Club Ladies Tennis Team takes part in the interclub tournaments, singles and doubles league, organised by the Singapore Tennis Association (STA). Having won the Interclub Doubles League in grade ‘B’ in 2018, we were promoted back to grade ‘A’ in 2019. We didn’t really have high expectations at first, as our previous seasons’ results in grade A were disappointing. However, we were all determined to go on court and give it our best and at all times to enjoy our tennis. The seemingly unexpected suddenly became achievable……. We are the 2019 Interclub Doubles League champion of grade A!!! - by Clytie Morgan
Missing in photos: Johanna, Julie, Jan.
Women International Tennis Singapore (WITS) League: We are delighted to have formed Get Smashed (Premier B Div) late 2019 with players from the original Swing Out Sisters team who have been in Premier B for the last 4 years or so and new joiners. We have two new team members who have come back to the Club to play and two new members who have just joined the club especially to play tennis. This mash up of “new blood” and the original team is fabulous for us all. It has already meant a new determination and focus at training. Cyril and Iverson have been pushing us hard which is just what we want and need! We are looking forward to a fun season ahead! - by Rhiannon Hill BC Can o’Balls (A Div) was keen and ready for action as the team went into the start of the season with a healthy complement of 10 players. Unfortunately a couple of the players got injured during the season and that landed the team with only six (or if a good week, seven) players available for each week. Not to be discouraged, the team pulled together, exerting all efforts at team training, match practices and clever strategising of lines and pairings to pick up a very solid number of points across the first third of the season. Many, many thanks to the ladies who changed pre-existing travel plans so that the team was able to get through the season without having to forfeit a line! We finished up in a very credible fourth position. We look forward to picking up some new team members to take us (Caroline, Megan, Donna, Linda, Val, Louise, Debbie & Nicki) even stronger into the next season! - by Megan Kinder The No Strings Attached (Beta Div) came together a couple of years ago in C division. We are a really social team who enjoy each other’s company both on and off court. We range from young mums all the way to grandmothers from UK, Australia, South Africa, Norway, Brazil and India. As we have improved our tennis skills together, we have found our stride and 2 seasons ago, won C division and getting promoted into Beta. We had a great first season in our new division, coming in fifth but have set our ambitions on coming in the top three in next season and maybe even winning again soon. - by Claire Henderson The ladies in BC Glam Slams (B Div) hail from Scotland, England, Ireland and Australia. The Glams trained really hard improving our game with coach Albert and playing as much as we could through socials and ladders. With very tough competition throughout the season and with sheer determination, we finished second in the league, narrowly lost by a mere two points to the division champion. The new season should prove to be a very exciting one as well as having fun on and off court; the Glam Slams are aiming for the top spot! - by Fiona Cobban
Many ladies in Kiss My Ace (C Div) have enjoyed five seasons together, coming up from D division. Wide range of nationalities, ages and interests drawn together to share their passion for tennis and sportsmanship. Team goals for WITS Spring 2020 include more ‘points on the board’ with player development under the ever patient and fabulous coaches, Cyril and Iverson, as well as more fun and friendship on and off the court! - by Jo Goldie
