President’sMessage

Dear Members,

A very Happy New Year to you and your families. To all who attended the 42nd Annual General Meeting, thank you for your participation and engagement. With 11 nominees and 10 elected candidates, I would like to take this opportunity to thank David Wong for his contributions and dedicated support to the committee over the years, as he steps down this term.

Look forward to the completion of the renovation works to the new playground by the swimming pool, a treat sure to delight our younger members! Meanwhile, we appreciate everyone’s patience as we eagerly await the completion of Scores Sports Bar, Restaurant, and new changing rooms, set to open in the first quarter of 2025. Last November the Club conducted a survey to gather your opinions on a possible name change for Scores Sports Bar and Restaurant. The feedback was to retain the name, and we are pleased to confirm that decision. Moving forward, we will refer to it as ‘Scores’. The logo will be refreshed to align with the updated look of the space.

In this issue, you’ll find a detailed white paper discussing an option to allow helpers access to the Club. This has come up in the past and more recently again in previous surveys and we are keen to better understand and wish to evaluate members thoughts on this aspect of our current bye-laws. Turn to page 6 and 7 to read more about the considerations behind this important topic. This is purely exploratory at this stage and no decisions have been made.

On a lighter note, I hope you enjoy exploring the rest of this issue, including the event highlights where you might spot some familiar faces. I particularly like reading updates from the Sports Sections as they serve as a wonderful reminder of the vibrant community we have here at the Club. I look forward to seeing you around the Club.

42nd Annual General Meeting

The 42nd Annual General Meeting (AGM) was held on Wednesday, 20 November, bringing together a total of 33 voting members and 13 proxy members. The evening began with insightful addresses from Roger Harrold, our President, followed by an update of the Club achievements and future plans by Ashley Nicholas (Honorary Treasurer), Tim Williamson (Development Chair), and Andrew Christon (General Manager).

A key highlight of the AGM was the election of 10 members to the Main Committee, along with a discussion on the proposal to allow Domestic Workers access to the Club. It was agreed that a white paper will be released to address this topic in greater detail and members will have the opportunity to give their open feedback in a survey in early 2025.

We extend our gratitude to all members who attended and participated in this meeting. Thank you for your support and engagement!

We are exploring an opportunity to update our Domestic Worker policy with regards to accompanying members children under 15 to the Club.

We wish to gather feedback from members in the period 1 January to 15 February.

We intend to review the feedback and review the level of support.

We may hold a members evening to engage in open dialogue and allow all to participate in this potential bye-law change.

White Paper: Domestic Worker Access Policy at The British Club

Executive Summary

This white paper proposes a structured policy for granting access to Domestic Workers at the British Club during the working week only (MondayFriday 3-7pm) when chaperoning young children aged 15 and under, during sports lessons in the absence of parents. Responding to evolving member needs for family support while maintaining the Club’s standards of decorum and exclusivity. The recent member survey suggested a shift in member sentiment and a need toward permitting Domestic Worker access for specific caregiving roles. By implementing this policy, the Club aims to balance inclusivity and support for families with dual-working parents and those in need of caregiving support. Comparative insights from other premier Clubs in Singapore further demonstrate the potential for increased member satisfaction and growth.

Introduction

As family dynamics shift, particularly with more dual-working families, the British Club has received increased member requests for Domestic Worker support during children’s sports lessons. Currently, Domestic Workers are not permitted on Club premises, under any circumstances, and among Singapore’s private clubs, only the British Club, Tanglin Club, and Cricket Club continue this restriction.

The demand for limited caregiver access has grown notably in recent years, with potential new members citing this as a factor in declining to join. This white paper outlines a policy designed to address member needs, preserve the Club’s welcoming atmosphere, and provide a framework for controlled access that upholds the Club’s values.

Background and Rationale for looking to change the Bye-Law

In the 2017, member survey the following question was asked and 412 members responded;

What do you think the policy on maids/ helpers should be in the future?

No change no maids

Pickup and drop off kids only 21%

Week days only 6%

Week days only before 6pm 4%

No limit 8%

60% of respondents favoured no change to exclude Domestic Workers from the Club. However, attitudes have since shifted, with a 2024 survey, where we asked the following question which was answered by 754 respondents (no duplicate responses);

Should the Club allow domestic helpers to supervise children?

Showing that 59% of 754 respondents support allowing Domestic Workers to supervise children under specific circumstances. This shift suggests that needs have evolved.

The Club has been analysing the reasons potential members are not joining the Club to which 33% responded that they declined to join due to the domestic worker policy. Over time, this could represent a substantial impact on membership growth, engagement, and revenue.

Policy Details and Requirements

This policy outlines clear guidelines and restrictions to ensure Domestic Worker access is aligned with the Club’s standards. Domestic Workers access to the Club is through membership cards.

a) Orientation and Fees

Domestic Workers and their employer (Principal Member or Spouse) must complete a mandatory orientation prior to receiving a membership card. A monthly subscription fee of $30.00 will be charged to the member’s account.

b) Permitted Hours

Domestic Workers may access the Club from Monday to Friday, between 3:00pm and 7:00pm, ensuring support during peak times for children’s sports lessons while preserving the weekend atmosphere for family time.

Access will not be granted on weekends and public holidays.

c) Permitted Duties

Domestic Workers may enter the Club under the following conditions:

• Chaperoning young children (aged 15 and under) during sports lessons in the absence of parents.

• Domestic Workers are prohibited from using Club facilities except for designated food and beverage areas when supervising the children in their care.

• Domestic Workers are not permitted access to the Club without the young member children.

d) Supervision of Employer’s Children Only

Domestic Workers may only supervise the children of their employers, not those of other members or guests.

e) Guest Policy

Domestic Workers are not permitted to bring guests to the Club.

f) Authorised Areas

Only Verandah Café and Scores are accessible for use by Domestic Workers. This restriction maintains Club privacy and exclusivity in all other areas, ensuring that the Club's environment remains consistent with members' expectations.

No Access to facilities – including swimming pool, tennis courts, squash courts, gym, the hideaway, reception area, and work hub areas.

g) Membership Card Requirements

Domestic Workers must carry and present their membership card upon entering the Club, when ordering F&B, and when settling any bills, ensuring accountability and security.

h) Dress Code

Domestic Workers must adhere to the Club's dress code and be appropriately attired on the premises.

i) Conduct and Three-Strike Policy

Domestic Workers must adhere to all Club Rules and Bye-laws. Domestic Workers are responsible for the care, safety, and conduct of those under their supervision. The Club will apply a three-strike policy for any misconduct, which will be communicated to both the Principal Member and the Domestic Worker.

j) Revocation of Membership

After three violations, management may revoke the helper membership associated with the principal membership, with immediate effect. Any reinstatement will be at the discretion of the Membership Committee.

k)

Appeal Process

Members may appeal for reinstatement of Domestic Worker membership to the Membership Committee after a period of one year.

l)

Liability

Liability for Domestic Workers and the children under supervision, lies solely with the Principal Member. At no time will the Club take responsibility for any accident, loss or damage.

Member Satisfaction Projections and Comparative Club Trends

a) Member Satisfaction Projections

With 59% of surveyed members supporting Domestic Worker access, this policy is expected to enhance satisfaction, particularly among dual-working families. Anticipated outcomes include:

• Improved retention through reduced resignations, among members needing fostering loyalty and long-term engagement.

• Higher engagement and event participation from family-oriented members, adding to the Club’s vibrant community environment.

b) Projected Membership Growth

By addressing current access limitations, the Club stands to gain:

• Approximately 33% new memberships, considering the reasons some potentials are not joining the Club.

• Enhanced member loyalty, which can drive sustained engagement and growth.

c) Comparative Analysis: Trends in Other Singapore Clubs

The British Club remains one of the few Clubs restricting Domestic Worker access, alongside Tanglin Club and Cricket Club. In contrast, other prestigious clubs have revised policies to allow limited Domestic Worker access.

The British Club has a unique opportunity to differentiate itself by introducing a balanced policy, preserving its family-friendly reputation, and appealing to current members without compromising traditional standards.

Conclusion

The updated Domestic Worker policy represents a strategic step toward aligning the Club’s services with the needs of today’s families while respecting its established values. By addressing member feedback and responding to trends among peer institutions, the Club is positioned to enhance both current member satisfaction and prospective growth. This policy offers a balanced approach that welcomes diverse family structures and caregiving needs, preserving the British Club’s commitment to providing an exclusive and inclusive community.

WHAT IF WE EAT MORE FOOD FROM SINGAPORE’S ECO-FRIENDLY FARMS?

Great choice! If we consume produce from local farms, we support local farmers and reduce emissions from transportation and storage. Singapore has numerous eco-friendly farms. They focus on sustainable agriculture and contribute to the local food ecosystem, which needs to grow in Singapore but is still in its infancy – and not without its economic struggles. The farms also allow you and your children to connect with nature. Not an ‘in-the middle-ofnowhere’ rural experience, but it is an interesting journey to go on an urban farming tour.

Why not start the new year visiting great organic vegetable and fruit farms in Singapore, understand where our food comes from, learn about innovative farming methods in Singapore’s urban environment, supporting local farmers and local sustainability efforts?

Here are five local farms that welcome visitors for tours or serve farm-totable fresh produce, but note there are many more in Singapore. Visit the farms in the morning to see them in action and enjoy the freshest produce.

CRICKET A Memorable End to the Cricket Season

As the year draws to a close, the Cricket Section reflects on a season brimming with camaraderie, competition, and unforgettable moments. The highlights? A much-anticipated end-of-season tour to Kuala Lumpur and the celebratory Awards Night back in Singapore.

The KL Tour

Fourteen enthusiastic players packed their kits and sense of humour for the KL tour, taking on the Royal Selangor Club (RSC) and SSU Kelab Aman. While cricket was the focus, the trip was just as much about building bonds off the field. Lively evening gatherings cemented friendships and created memories to last a lifetime.

On the field, the team faced scorching heat and 100% humidity. Losing both tosses meant long stints under the sun, and while most batters didn’t trouble the scorer, the spirit of cricket prevailed. A big thank-you to our gracious hosts for their sportsmanship and hospitality.

Thanks to our unsung Heroes

This season wouldn’t have been possible without our incredible committee. Special mentions to Biggers, Mal, and Coach Pardey for rallying the team, and to our Convener Rob, Co-convener Will, Treasurer Ross (The Undertaker) and the rest of the committee— Asad, Srikant, Sabbs, and Adam—for their dedication to the section.

Celebrating Success

Back home, the Cricket Section capped the season with a spectacular Awards Night held at the Elizabeth Suites. Players swapped cricket whites for smart casuals (well, almost) and celebrated a season of highs, laughs, and camaraderie.

Looking Ahead

Awards 2024:

• Tourist of the Year: Lee Ownsworth – 5% effort, 95% off-field antics!

• Bowler of the Year: James Riley – 10 wickets at an average of 10.0.

• Fielder of the Year: Sam Stephens – 5 catches and a rocket arm.

• New Player of the Year: Ben Waters – Outstanding contributions on and off the field.

• Spirit of Cricket Award: Jonas Foreman – A longstanding member and his legacy.

• Batter & Player of the Year: Rob Annan – 234 runs at an average of 58.5.

As the evening concluded with a group photo and cheers into the night, it reminded us why we play: for the love of cricket and the friendships it fosters. Here’s to another year of runs, wickets, and unforgettable moments!

FOOTBALL Section Update

Mid-Season Report: Lions Roar, Bulldogs Gather Strength

As we head towards the halfway mark of the season, the BCFC Lions (Open Age) are soaring high in the EQL league, firmly in the title race! We’ll keep you updated on their exciting journey. While the BCFC Bulldogs (Cosmo Masters league - SuperVets) currently sit lower in the table, their spirits remain high.

Bali Tour

In our last article, we were about to embark on our much-anticipated Bali tour. The squad photo proudly displayed below this article captures the spirit of the trip! During the tour, we played a competitive inter-section 5-a-side tournament on Friday and faced a younger Bali Wanderers FC on Saturday. Both teams are now eagerly anticipating the annual Christmas Long Lunch - a cherished tradition for players of all ages within the section.

HMS Spey and the 7-a-Side Games

A thrilling encounter unfolded in late November when the British Club hosted two 7-a-side mini-tournaments with HMS Spey. Surprisingly, the SuperVets emerged victorious on both nights, showcasing a fierce competitive spirit. Let’s hope they translate this winning mentality into their regular league matches!

Saying Farewell to Valued Members

Expat life in Singapore sometimes necessitates goodbyes. As the year draws to a close, we bid farewell to some dear friends who will be leaving us – and the British Club Football Section.

Rich English, a stalwart figure at the BCFC, will be relocating to Dubai after 16 years in Singapore and nearly a decade of dedication to the club. He leaves behind a legacy of leadership, serving as a long-term captain, a committee member for many years, and even a convenor for a period. While Rich’s spectacular goals will be remembered fondly (even the occasional own goal!), his contributions extend far beyond the pitch. Thank you, Rich, for everything you have done for the BCFC. You will be deeply missed.

Matt Hendra, a popular member of the BCFC Bulldogs (and occasional Lions player), will also be departing for the UK. His attacking midfield skills and keen eye for goal have been invaluable assets. We wish Matt all the best in his future endeavours.

Join the Fun!

New to the British Club, or unsure about joining a competitive league just yet? We offer lively social football sessions twice a week, perfect for all ages and skill levels. Join us on Wednesday evenings or Saturday afternoons!

A Thriving Football Community

For those new to the section, the British Club Football Section boasts a long-standing tradition of nearly 20 years. We cater to all age groups (16-67+) with regular weekly games in various formats, including 5-a-side, 7-a-side, and 11-a-side.

GOLF Section Update

It has been an active few months of golf within the Golf section with several social events and one of our flagship annual competitions taking place.

Our monthly social games at KeppelSime and in Malaysia, catering for both midweek & weekend golfers have been continuing & there have even several new winners now qualifying for our end of season Order of Merit competition, which will take place at the end of November.

Originally scheduled for September, the event was postponed due to inclement weather, and after considerable anticipation went ahead on Friday, 15 November.

Tanah Merah Tampines Course as one of the premier loops in Singapore was selected as the venue for this year’s competition. The competition saw 22 members & guests assemble for the match. Second time round the weather was kind and a great morning’s play was enjoyed by all. The tough course with challenging approach shots and sloping, fast greens provided a stern test, though several members managed the conditions well to post good scores on the day. It was heartening after a gap of a few years to be able to crown a Ladies Champion and encouraging as we continue to promote a family-oriented & diverse golfing group. The Men’s & Ladies Champions and other placings are listed below in full. Congratulations from all the section and worthy champions all.

Men’s Champion : Adam Bozeman (80 gross. Won on countback)

Ladies Champion : Kate Burton ((80 Gross)

Men’s 2nd Place : Jay Jhaveri (80 Gross)

Men’s 3rd Place & Best Nett Score : James Harvey (81 Gross/ 70 Nett)

Longest Drive : Adrian Ashman

Closest to the Pin : Tim Barkham, Harry Gabb

Best Guest : Harry Gabb (77 Nett)

Upcoming events & games

We have a group of 12 golfers scheduled to participate in our end of season Order of Merit event in Desaru, Malaysia on the weekend of 30th November. The culmination of our season, this allows the winners of our monthly social matches to participate to be crowned the Order of Merit annual winner & is played over 2 days at the fabulous Valley & Ocean courses at Els Desaru.

Thank you to all section members for supporting our events, and to the committee for organising ongoing golf activities for the section. See you soon out on the course!

Club Championship (15 November) at Tanah Merah Country Club: Tampines Course

PADEL Section Update

It’s been quite a year in the Padel Section. The dramatic growth of the section has seen us grow by 70% in the last year to 54 members and over 100 on the WhatsApp’s chat group, both of which we thought required some celebrating! So, we decided that the inaugural section dinner was the way to do it.

The chosen venue was Treetops at the top of the Club, which I think is one of the best open-air venues in Singapore when the weather is good, which it was, thankfully! In homage to our sport’s roots, we had a Mexican-themed meal and a broadly red, white and green colour dress code. Added South American inspiration came in the shape of Margaritas and Mexican beers.

One of the reasons for the success of the section is the great sense of community within our group. None of us had played much padel before and so even the most experienced only have a couple of years of playing behind us. We are all growing together and learning the sport as friends. The more enthusiastic of the group have regular lessons and play several times a week but most are self-confessed ‘padel addicts’. In fact, you will now see the best tennis players at the British Club more regularly on the padel courts across Singapore than on the tennis courts, such is the hold the game has over us.

Our Tuesday night socials continue to thrive and so we have added Thursday nights, and for some, also Friday nights. The strain on the venues has been helped by the addition of more courts that have opened and more still that are under construction. But to be honest, as soon as new courts are built and come online, they fill to capacity. Hence the aim is still very much to have our own courts. Padel is friendly, fun and easy to pick up. Come and join us!

PICKLEBALL

Pickleball Takes Off at the British Club!

On 3 November 2024, the British Club marked a significant milestone for its burgeoning pickleball community by hosting its first friendly match. Twelve players, representing all skill levels within the Club, came together to face the Tanglin Club in a thrilling friendly competition that showcased the spirit of the game. The energy on the courts was palpable, with every serve, volley, dink, and rally igniting a blend of fun, exhilaration, and just the right amount of friendly tension.

The day was about more than just winning—it was about building camaraderie and fostering a shared love for pickleball. The match ended with an 8-3 victory for the British Club (yes, we couldn’t resist mentioning it!), but the real highlight was the sense of connection and sportsmanship between the two Clubs. The event concluded with a delightful dinner, where players from both sides shared laughs, stories, and plans for future meetups.

This friendly match was not just a day of spirited competition; it was a proud moment for the British Club, marking the growth of our pickleball section. With such an engaging and supportive atmosphere, it’s no wonder the game is capturing the hearts of so many members.

If you haven’t yet picked up a paddle or joined us on the courts, now is the perfect time! Whether you’re an experienced player or a complete beginner, there’s a place for everyone in our pickleball community. Let’s continue to grow, play, and celebrate this fantastic sport together.

Let’s continue to grow, play, and celebrate this fantastic sport together.

See you on the court!

SQUASH The Golden Couple

Gathered around the glass-backed squash courts at the Sports & Recreation Centre, nervous but excited, a small group of BC squashers were waiting for coaching from two of the world’s top players.

The occasion was Wednesday, 27 November when we hosted the World #4 Men’s and World #7 Ladies’ squash professionals, Paul Coll from New Zealand and Nele Coll (née Gilis) from Belgium.

The hour-long squash clinic put the players, thrilled to be learning from two of the very best in the sport, through their paces as a crowd of spectators gathered. Two of the section’s top players then had the opportunity to have a game with the pros, with Simon Bird playing against Nele and Charlie Thomas playing against Paul. Then, following some court-side questions and conversation, we were treated to an exhibition match between the two of them, which was awesome to watch up close. With a slight modification to the rules, Nele managed to beat her husband handsomely – girl power – and seeing the speed, fitness and skill of two of the best players on the planet was a treat for everyone there.

And there was more; the pair joined us for dinner at Scores and an inconversation style Q&A session after the meal. It was a real privilege not only to be in the company of such elite athletes but to share time with such a wonderfully warm and friendly couple. Paul and Nele were here for the Singapore Open tournament and enjoying a little down-time before heading to Hong Kong. We talked about their path to the top, how tough it is to compete in the PSA top 10, and about their observations on the positive future for squash as a sport, and their own aspirations for the future, both on and off the court.

Congratulations to Paul and Nele, the latest ‘golden couple’ of squash who only tied the knot in July this year. We wish them every success in their future, on court and off.

SWIMMING Section Update

Oceanman, Kota Kinabalu, Sabah, Malaysia – 6 October 2024

since March 2007

, Five of the British Club Masters Swimming Section (plus supporters) travelled to Kota Kinabalu on the weekend of 5-6 October for an Oceanman open water swim event. Nathalie Farrow and Dianne Faulks swimming the 5km, and David Green, James Tyler, and Matthew Forrest the 10km event.

The swimmers were quietly confident as this event had been selected as part of their ongoing open-water swim training for the Section’s annual trip to the Gili Islands in November, nevertheless, they were somewhat apprehensive following their tough experience participating in the Oceanman event in Krabi in early May, where conditions had been very challenging with strong current and lots of jellyfish!

The event was based at the Shangri-La Rasa Ria hotel in Kota Kinabalu, which provided a luxurious environment with stunning ocean views in one direction and majestic views of Mount Kinabalu in the other.

After enjoying the hotel facilities on Saturday morning, the swimmers headed to the beach at midday for a reconnaissance trip. This did little to calm the nerves as they discovered a strong onshore breeze had whipped up a swell, which were breaking in two-metre-high rollers up the long, sandy beach. At least the lifeguard on duty seemed to say that that conditions early morning the next day would be calmer, and that there were no jellyfish (but what was lost in translation?).

Saturday night was the welcome dinner hosted by the Sabah Tourism Board, followed by the event briefing and dance performances showcasing the local culture and emulating some of Sabah’s indigenous tribes. The briefing did little to calm the nerves, as the course was revealed to be 2.5km triangular loop with an on-land turn on the beach at the end of each lap (meaning swimmers would have to battle the surf to exit and re-enter the course); but the dancing was more impressive than Strictly, and it was a “10” for the last performance: the Borneo head hunters, wearing impressive headdresses decorated with the feathers of the great Argus pheasant (thank you, Google), and armed with swords and blowpipe!

Up bright and early on Sunday, the swimmers were at the beach at 5:30am to prepare, helping each other grease up and squeeze into tight-fitting swimsuits (is this the real reason they like this sport?). Conditions were calmer, as the lifeguard had promised, but the tide was fully out, so it would be a long walk through shallow water and breaking waves before the water would be deep enough for swimming. Anxious, but excited and ready to go, the 10km swimmers set off at 6:30am followed 15 minutes later by the 5km.

The first 500m was challenging with arms and legs everywhere and swimmers struggling to get through the waves breaking over their heads, however, once the competitors had spread out and had reached the relative calm of the swell beyond the breakers, conditions were much better. The incoming tide meant the return leg of the course was good fun, with a following

current and swimmers surfing the breakers up the beach. With the water level rising, the run (ok, walk) up and down the beach was somewhat shorter each lap, and the on-land turn meant feeding was much easier than if it had been in water.

Overall, a much more pleasant experience than Krabi, with hardly a jellyfish in sight and no stings reported! A super fun weekend and an impressive medal haul for the British Club:

Nathalie Farrow (5km): 1:39:15 / 9th overall / 2nd female / 1st age group

Dianne Faulks (5km): 1:49:08 / 14th overall / 5th female / 1st age group

David Green (10km): 3:48:04 / 13th overall / 11th male / 4th age group

James Tyler (10km): 3:33:46 / 10th overall / 8th male / 2nd age group

Matthew Forrest (10km): 3:17:32 / 6th overall / 5th male / 1st age group

Singapore Masters Gala - 3 November 2024

The British Club Masters Swimming Section returned victorious from the Singapore Masters Swimming Gala hosted after the World Swimming Championship Gala in Singapore, racking up an impressive 16 medal haul against tough competition.

This year’s competition was no walk in the park. The pool was packed with swimmers, and the competition was fierce! But our thirteen amazing athletes took it all in stride, proving that age is just a number when you’ve got skills and determination. Like David Boyland mentioned to the squad after the meet, “The standard of the competition was very high and everyone held their own. We should all be very proud.”

Podium Moments:

Total: 16 Medals: 7 Gold, 7 Silver and 5 Bronze

Gold: Toh, Yiu Joe (50M Freestyle, 50M Butterfly), Faulks, Dianne (200M & 100M Freestyle), Megan (50M Backstroke, 100M Freestyle)

Silver: Hume, Megan (50M Freestyle), Chin, Yien (50M Freestyle), Faulks, Dianne (50M Freestyle, 50M Butterfly), Boyland, David (100M backstroke), Koike, Takayuki (100M IM), Farrow, Nathalie (50M Breaststroke)

Bronze: Leong, Brandon (100M Butterfly), Faulks, Dianne (100M IM), Hawkins, lan (100M Freestyle), Chin, Yien (100M Freestyle), Women 100M Medley Relay, Men’s 100M Medley Relay

And let’s give a round of applause to Dianne Faulks and James Tyler, who practically lived in the pool with the number of races they swam! These two are absolute machines!

A huge thank you to our amazing coach, Alain! Your support and encouragement is so important to all of us. You’ve helped us reach new heights! And of course, to the incredible supporters who turned up to cheer us on – your enthusiasm was contagious, and we couldn’t have done it without you. Thanks for giving up your Sunday to witness our aquatic adventures! There is nothing more special than getting up on the starting blocks and hearing you all cheer us on.

Massive congrats to the whole team! You’ve done the club proud :)
