Comfortable as a performer, presenter, actor and guest there is no doubt that Amos will retain his position as one of the UK’s favourite comedians for a long time to come. SCOTT MITCHELL Scott Mitchell is a proud Permanent Resident of Singapore. Originally from Scotland, he moved to The Lion City long ago (way before MBS existed and even before Clarke Quay had a roof). Father of 4, he shares tales of his family life, foreign adventures and the contrast of daily life in the tropics compared to his childhood in Bonny Scotland.
MATT CHALMERS Matt burst onto the comedy scene fairly recently and has been wowing audiences with his disarming nervous charm ever since. Hailing from Glasgow, via the Middle East, he has performed in the UK, USA and South East Asia. It is rare gem of a comedian that hits the scene ready to go - Matt is one of those comedians.

INVESTMENT PSYCHOLOGY By Huw Wedlock, The Fry Group
Finance is not only about figures. According to research conducted by Professor Dr. Thorsten Hens and MSc. BA Anna Meier from Behavioral Finance Solutions GmbH, Human behaviour and psychology are behind up to 80% of investments. According to many financial professionals, behaviour is the largest single reason for poor investment decisions. The instincts that keep us alive can also work against us in the world of finance. That is why investment professionals should always assess their clients risk profile. In fact, the basic human emotions of greed and fear have driven investor psychology for centuries. One example which gripped England in the 18th century, is The South Sea Bubble. It was one of the earliest recorded stock market crashes and gave rise to the term ‘stock market bubble’. In 1720, there was euphoria surrounding shares in the South Sea Trading Company, including one of the most influential scientists of all time, Sir Isaac Newton. Sensing that the market was getting out of hand, he sold £7,000 of his shares netting a 100% profit. However, seeing the price continue to rise and his friends’ profits with it, he couldn’t help himself and reinvested at a higher price, eventually selling out and losing £20,000 (equivalent to £3m today). He famously quoted that he “could calculate the motions of the heavenly bodies, but not the madness of the people”. And for the rest of his life, he forbade anyone to say South Sea in his presence.
So, if you do want to take the emotion out of investing take heed from the words of Warren Buffet: “We simply attempt to be fearful when others are greedy and to be greedy when others are fearful.” With this in mind, here’s some investment pointers: •
Avoid the latest ‘hot tip’, whether it is technology stock or the London property market. By the time everyone is talking about it, the smart investors have made their money, are taking their profits and moving on.
• Never be frightened to take profits. •
Don’t always be rushing to cash in when the price falls. Remember it is a ‘paper loss’ and by cashing in you will crystallise the loss. If you hang on, there are cases where the price can pick up as markets enter the recovery phase.
• However, it is important to recognise that sometimes a bad investment is a bad investment and you just have to cut your losses. • Think long term. Rather than try to time the markets, understand that it is more to do with time ‘in’ the markets. And if you feel that making your own investment decisions is just not you, ask a professional adviser to recommend a diversified portfolio designed to match your risk profile and investment objectives.
There have been countless books written by investment gurus on the art to successful investing. We know that we should buy low and sell high but most people do exactly the opposite because they become emotionally involved when it is their own money. Let’s face it, if a right-brained genius such as Sir Isaac Newton couldn’t control his emotions when investing his money, what hope remains for the rest of us mere mortals?

• MEMBER IN THE SPOTLIGHT •
For this issue of Member in the Spotlight,
Ben, Fiona, and cute little Bruce and Fraser. we are pleased to feature
1) How did you come to hear about The British Club and what made you join?
I heard about the Club through my social circles a few years ago but it was only really when we moved to the Holland area, with our young children in tow that we realized how much we needed a Membership. We had the usual introduction tour and loved the facilities plus the staff are all so friendly.
2) How have your experiences been at the Club for the past year and would you recommend the Club to others?
We are here every weekend as the kids love to play in the pool and I’m a massive fan of the Indian buffet! It’s a great chance to catch up with friends that are already Members (more than we realised which is great), or we invite friends to the Club to join us. We’ve been to the Wine Tasting which was absolutely brilliant; amazing wines and an excellent food spread, as well as Members Connect Night of course. Windsor Shop by the entrance is our favourite as it sells essentials like UK cheeses, snacks and of course Terry’s Chocolate Orange! The Playroom is also extremely popular with our 2 year old.
We would definitely recommend the Club - and already have on several occasions.
3) Tell us more yourself and your family.
Ben and his family joined the Club in May last year. He is a Chartering Manager at Eastern Pacific Shipping. Read on to find out more about Benjamin, his family and why he joined the British Club.
Fiona and I have been living and working in Singapore for about 8 years, enjoying everything it has to offer (before and after having kids!), and the time could not have flown by faster. Fiona has worked for a Swiss bank for the past 10 years, loves wine and cheese, and is an incredible mum. I enjoy playing rugby a lot until recently, when injuries finally caught up with me. Our two young boys occupy most of our free time at the moment. The eldest, Bruce, is just over 2 years old and adores animals and motorbikes. Our youngest, Fraser, is 6 months old and always has something to smile about.
4) Lastly, where can we always find you over the weekends?
Verandah Café and the pool, preferably with some Garlic Naan from the Indian Kitchen!

Bowel Cancer Awareness Month (UK) What you need to know
Q. How common is bowel cancer? Bowel cancer also known as Colorectal cancer is the most common cancer in Singapore. It is the fourth most common cancer in the UK. Almost 42,000 people are diagnosed with cancer in the UK every year. More than 9 out of 10 new cases are diagnosed in people over the age of 50. But bowel cancer can affect anyone of any age. More than 2,500 new cases are diagnosed each year in people under the age of 50. 1 in 15 men and 1 in 18 women will be diagnosed with bowel cancer during their lifetime. Q. Who is at risk of developing bowel cancer?
or more of these symptoms, or if things just don’t feel right, it is important to go and see your GP. Q. At what age should colonoscopies be considered? Screening is a way of testing healthy people to see if they show any early signs of cancer. Bowel cancer screening can save lives. Screening aims to detect bowel cancer early, when treatment has the best chance of working. An annual Feacel immunochemical test (FIT) is generally recommended from the age of 50 onwards. For those with a family history of the disease screening is often recommended earlier. It is a non-invasive test which involves collecting a stool sample, which is sent to a lab for testing. If the FIT result is positive, patients will normally undergo a colonoscopy to rule out or confirm the presence of colorectal cancer.
We don’t know what causes most bowel cancers, but we do know that some factors increase your risk of getting the disease. Some of these things you can’t do anything about, e.g. age and genetics. But you can make changes to your lifestyle to lower your risk of getting bowel cancer.
Colonoscopy is regarded as the gold standard for colorectal cancer screening and it’s the most accurate and reliable method available. Using high definition, fibre optic technology, a colonoscopy allows the doctor performing the procedure to view the inner wall of the colon and rectum in detail. If any polyps or cancers are identified, they can be biopsied or removed immediately.
You are at increased risk if: • Aged over 50 • A strong family history of bowel cancer • A history of non-cancerous polyps in your bowel • Long standing inflammatory bowel disease such as Crohn’s disease or Ulcerative colitis • Type 2 diabetes • Obesity • Physical inactivity • Smoking
Most bowel cancers develop from pre-cancerous growths , called polyps. But not all polyps develop into cancer. If your doctor finds any polyps, he or she can remove them to prevent them becoming cancerous. Q. What preventative measures can be taken?
Q. Are there early symptoms signs? Bowel cancer is treatable and curable especially if diagnosed early. Nearly everyone survives bowel cancer if diagnosed at the earliest stage. However, this drops significantly as the disease develops. Early diagnosis really does save lives. Warning signs include a change in your usual bowel habits, such as persistent or alternating patterns of diarrhea or constipation, change in frequency of stools and presence of blood, unintentional weight loss or reduction in appetite, extreme tiredness for no obvious reason and pain or a lump in your abdomen.
Research has shown that a diet high in red or processed meats and low in fibre can increase your risk of colon cancer. Therefore, a healthy diet, incorporating a healthy balance of all food groups is recommended. As is reducing alcohol intake and stopping smoking. Making sure you maintain a healthy weight is important as bowel cancer is more common in people who are overweight or obese. Being inactive increases your risk of getting bowel cancer so it is important your take regular exercise. Conclusion Maintaining a healthy lifestyle and attending for regular screening is key.
Most people with these symptoms don’t have bowel cancer – other health problems can cause similar symptoms. But if you have one

n o s r e v I De Barros,
our tennis coach all the way from Maringá, Paraná, Brazil! Iverson is 36 years old this year and was born in Maringá, Paraná. He is happily married and is the eldest son in a family of five. Iverson’s first interaction with tennis happened when he was 6 years old, where he used to follow his dad to the Club to watch him give tennis lessons. His love for tennis was innate and at the age of 10, he won his first national tournament. In the following year, Iverson ventured out on his first overseas trip to Santiago, Chile, to represent Brazil in the South America under 12 Team Tournament. As a junior, he has played many tournaments all over the world and trained in Buenos Aires and Miami. Above it all, the travelling has given him amazing experience on the tennis court, and for life as well. As a professional, Iverson was once ranked in ATP for singles and doubles. At the age of 22, he decided to put his professional tennis career on hold to attend university, where he studied Physical Education. It is also at that point in time when he got his first job as a tennis coach, training kids and adults in his city. Fast-forward to 2016, Iverson arrived in Singapore and started as a tennis coach at The British Club. Right from the get-go, he felt welcomed and familiar. Throughout these three years, he has also maintained great relationships with the staff, coaches and especially Members. Read on to find out more about Iverson and his tennis!

This is an old world modern gin, with unmistakable pine of the Juniper, coupled with the herbaceous flavour notes from classic gin botanical. The twist comes from Indian Amchoor - a powdered form of green unripe mango, that adds an extra citrus note and our not so secret ingredient is in the name, Orchid.

Royal Geographical Society Singapore Brings You
h t i m S s a m o Th Chasing fire
Through sharing his experiences of chasing wildfires across four continents, Thomas will explore the science of ‘pyrogeography’ and what it can tell us about the drivers and impact on environmental change. Case studies include deforestation fires in Indonesia and Malaysia, savanna fires in northern Australia, and heathland fires in the UK. Dr Thomas Smith is an Assistant Professor in Environmental Geography and a member of the Environmental Economics and Policy Cluster, a part of the Department of Geography and Environment at the London School of Economics and Political Science. He teaches on a number of environmental courses, focusing on innovative technology-enhanced experiential learning and field-based education in geography. Tom is a geographer and environmental scientist, specialising in interdisciplinary approaches to understanding the role of biomass burning (wildfires) in the Earth’s system. Tom enjoys highly collaborative research focusing on greenhouse gas and reactive emissions from wildland fires in savannas and tropical peatlands. He is particularly interested in complex interactions between agricultural practices, land degradation, fire emission characteristics and their associated impact.

SWIMMING SECTION REPORT
By Rebecca Turley
The competitive season for 2019 kicked off with the first leg of the Merlion League, which was superbly hosted by the British Club. The Barracudas were joined by teams from Marsden Swim School, Tanglin Club, The American Club and Warren Swim Team. The weather was kind and the organisation was superb. Throughout the event, the swimmers pulled out some amazing performances, with many swimmers posting their PB’s. Our British Club Barracudas’ final Medal tally was: 39 Gold 14 Silver 24 Bronze In the relay events, the team was almost unbeatable, winning an impressive 7 Gold medals out of a possible 9. Many thanks to all the parents who volunteered as Time Keepers and the Total Swimming Team for organising an excellent swim meet program. Huge congratulations to all our Barracudas Swimmers - just keep swimming!

THE WEDDING By Craig Telmer
Move over Prince Harry and Ms. Meghan, your wedding may have been an event in 2018, but this is 2019. This is the year for Dominic and Charmaine! Father of the bride, squash player Raymond Kwee, was busy on his phone inviting people to the gala wedding when a squash social attendance WhatsApp message suddenly appeared and he accidentally invited the entire squash section to his daughter’s wedding! It was too late to delete the message as 28 squash players and significant others had quickly sent RSVPs! We all put on our finest and had a fantastic afternoon on Sat, 19 Jan. On a slightly more serious note, the squash section wishes a lifetime of happiness to Dominic and Charmaine. Thanks for including us in your family event Raymondo. For this month, nobody is allowed to complain that you show up late for social when we are all tired, played left-handed or wearing that hideous bright orange shirt! As the average age of the squash section is close to 50 and many have kids in their 20s, a precedent has been set… whose wedding are we crashing next????? SINGAPORE’S HILLTOP RETREAT |

NUTRITION FOR TENNIS By Liza Rowan As a lover of tennis & food (my day job being a Nutritionist), I thought an article on Sports Nutrition might help us British Club players aspire to improve our diet as a competitive edge. We know the celebrities do this – Djokovic attributes his gluten and dairy-free diet to his success, while Serena follows a raw vegan diet during match season. All individuals will have different diets that work best for them, but here are some general guidelines. We all know we should eat less sugar, enjoy more fibrous vegetables, consume less processed food etc – but in practice (pardon the pun) life often gets in the way. However, we have to find the specific triggers that make us tick so that we prioritise our nutrition – obviously for our overall health & longevity, and also for our energy, stamina and alertness on and off the tennis court. If you’re new to Singapore, don’t underestimate the importance of fluids and foods in helping combat the challenges of what we call the 4Hs – Heat, Hydration, Humidity, and Haze (thankfully not such an issue over the past couple of years). Hydration is key for all sports, but especially here in the tropics. On a non-active day, 2 litres of water should be our target, with an additional 125-250 ml for every 15 minutes of exercise – aiming for the higher end in the Singapore humidity. Water helps cool us down, but as we sweat we also lose electrolytes. Never a fan of 100 Plus and other ‘sports drinks’ (google a common ingredient - ‘sodium benzoate’), I encourage clients to make their own simple energy drink consisting of 2/3 water and the remaining 1/3 coconut water (replaces lost potassium & magnesium), or orange juice (providing glucose for energy) and add in 1/2 tsp of sea salt to replace lost sodium.
Andrea’s healthy post-training lunch
Many ‘sports drinks’ are high in sugar which negatively impact hydration, and usually contain unwanted additives. Energy drinks are formulated to provide an extra ‘kick’ – containing caffeine, sugar and Vitamin B (for energy production), and also other unnecessary ingredients. If you do need a little boost on court, save your money and your health by bringing your own quality coffee drink. Foods fall into one or more of these macronutrient classifications, and we need all three contrary to changing dietary fads – Carbs – for energy. They are converted to glucose to feed our muscles and brain (just as important in a match!). Excess is stored as glycogen in our muscles for later use. Protein – for growth, strength and repair of our muscles Fats – keep us healthy overall Here’s what to eat post, pre and during your tennis play: 2 to 4 hours prior: A light meal with slower digestible carbs to build up glycogen stores and some protein e.g. Oatmeal & yoghurt, wholemeal toast with nut butter & banana or chicken with brown rice. 30mins to 1 hour prior: Easily digestible carbs e.g. Greek yoghurt & fruits or sip on a smoothie. During your match: Refuel with easily digestible carbs – ripen bananas (which also replace electrolytes as they are high in potassium, magnesium), grapes, melons, dates (if you can digest easily – Djokovic’s go-to), pretzels, rice cakes and salt crackers. Note that it’s always a good idea to carry snacks in your tennis bag, in the event of marathon matches or rain delays. 42 |
THE BRITISH CLUB
• SPORTS & FITNESS • Shortly after: Carbs & protein for repair. This is where you want to replace lost glucose with ‘quicker’ carbs and help repair muscles with some protein – a smoothie, fruit & nuts, or nibble on a ‘healthy’ cereal or protein bar. 2 to 4 hours or next meal: Meal should contain slow releasing carbs, proteins and some fat. In maximising energy and stamina for your game, remember that it’s not just what you eat around match time; it’s how you optimise your nutrition 24/7. For those involved in extremely intense competitive matches, ergonomic aids can help give that added boost of energy – caffeine is the obvious one as mentioned above. Beetroot has naturally occurring nitrates which convert to nitrite oxide improving blood flow and oxygen to muscles (if playing at Scores, ask for ‘Liza’s Drink’!). Energy drinks and gels may also help, but they are costly and often contain unhealthy additives – as with all packaged food, best to check the label. Next month we will bring in an expert on another important competitive edge – conditioning exercises for your game, and the best warm up & stretching routines to avoid injury.

FAMILY GOLF DAY By John Hancock
LAGUNA GOLF BINTAN 10 golfers arrived early Saturday morning for our first family day event of the year, with 3 of the juniors coming from the junior academy at Champions golf. Laguna Bintan was in great condition, and many thanks to Laguna for letting us setup our own 100 yards tee off areas for some of the junior Members. Congratulations to the Taal family who swept up the awards for both the Junior stableford (Lucas on 44 points) and the family stableford (Lucas and Dad Renzo) on 78 points. The family golf society has an outing every month rotating between Laguna Bintan and Palm Springs in Batam. If you would like to join our whatsapp group, please contact the golf section at the Club. Our next joint outing with the British Club will be on Saturday, 25 May at Laguna Bintan.
TANAH MERAH MARCH MONTHLY MEDAL 8 golfers turned up for the monthly medal at the newly reformatted Tanah Merah course, which was in superb condition! It was good to see some new faces as we welcomed Marcel and Daniel.

• SPORTS & FITNESS • CRICKET:
CRICKET SECTION REPORT By Paul McNee It has been a busy couple of months for the Cricket Section as we have played many games over the weekends during February and March. The highlight was a memorable victory over SCC at their home ground at the Padang. Todd Buck led the BC team and faced an uphill battle when the SCC got off to a great start posting a score of 1/104 off the first 15 overs. On a very hot day, the SCC looked set
for a score well in excess of 200. However, some very tight bowling from the BC saw them collapse to be all out for 171. The run chase got off to a great start with Vaughan English leading the way hitting straight and long to rush to a quick 35 retired. Greg Baker and Todd Buck brought the team home and made the post-match celebratory drinks even more enjoyable. Thanks very much to Rohit and the SCC lads for the great post-match hospitality and we look forward to reciprocating at Scores bar at our next fixture. Outside the win at the Padang, the team has struggled to get across the line in matches vs Cargill, SCC (Demspey), UWC and ANZA. Our inability to win a toss and hence being forced to field first hasn’t helped. The lowlight was the SCC game at Dempsey where former BC Stalwart David Bennett wreaked havoc with the ball dismissing our first 4 batsmen to have us reeling at 4/6. Only an 85 run partnership between Mr Consistency Todd Buck and Simon ‘Bradman’ Bignell saved us some BC pride.

Other highlights have been Simon Bignell’s run scoring heroics (averaging 100+ for the season), ex BC member Mark Standys, (who was town from Dublin) 5/21 against UWC and post-match reviews at Scores bar. Hopefully, the win against SCC will be a turning point for the rest of the season. Batting has been the issue so anyone who fancies their ability with the willow, please come down and join the section.
