GM’S MESSAGE
Dear Members, Welcome to 2015, here’s to good health and success in the coming year! First and foremost, on behalf of the Club Management and employees, thank you for your support for picking the Charity Stars from our lovely Christmas tree in the Main Lobby. This will certainly help support the Club’s adopted charities – Riding for the Disabled Association and the Gurkha Welfare Trust. Your generosity and giving spirit has indeed made a difference to the less fortunate in our society. May I also thank all Members who had donated generously to the Hong Bao (Red Packet) Fund for our Club employees. Your appreciation of our employees will surely make their day and show how much their hard work is appreciated. In the Sports section of this issue, I am delighted to read the entertaining updates from our various Sports convenors. For those who are interested in any of the sports activities the Club has to offer, please do not hesitate to contact our Sports team at 64101173, they will be more than happy to point you in the right direction. We do have very active sections in Tennis, Squash, Football, Cricket, Swimming, Scuba, and so much more. On the Food and Beverage front, the McWilliams Wine & Gourmet Dinner will be taking place on Friday, 23 January. For wine lovers, this is a dinner not to be missed with special take-away prices available for selected wines during the evening. To welcome back the children, we are putting out a creative puppetry show aptly called Inventive Puppetry by award-winning puppeteer Frank Malachi. You would have heard by now that the Club will be hosting the third Best of British event from 5 to 13 June. This major event will be open to all Members and Guests. If your company would like to partner us through this event, please contact us at 6410 1111 or email marketing@britishclub.org.sg. Planned property tax for British expats takes another twist By Martin Rimmer
A new Capital Gains Tax (CGT) charge on non-residents who sell residential property in the UK has been on the cards for about a year and details are slowly emerging about how it will work when it comes into force on 6th April, 2015. Late last month the Government published a further update providing another twist to the saga and another layer of complexity. No surprise there. The biggest talking point in these latest details is the tax relief available when a property has previously been used as a person’s Principal Private Residence. The Government recognises that this tax relief could be open to abuse so has come up with a new rule designed to prevent someone from simply electing a UK property to be a main residence to claim the relief. To close this loophole, the government has now said the relief isn’t available for a tax year in which the seller is not resident in the UK for tax purposes, or has not spent at least 90 midnights in that property in the tax year.
Some good news Whilst it isn’t at all clear how it will apply in practice, it is clear that if a property has qualified as your Principal Private Residence at any time, you will be able to exempt the gain relating to the last 18 months of ownership from the taxable part of the gain. In short, the fact that a property was a main home before the tax charge came in, does not prevent relief applying to the part of the gain which is taxable from 6th April 2015. While that may sound complicated, it is good news! And, just to complicate things even further, non-residents will have the ability to nominate a property as a main residence from the date of sale rather than from the normal earlier date.
Valuation However, the Government has now positively confirmed that you will only be taxed on the part of the gain that has accrued since 6th April, 2015. The value you can use for this purpose is either the open market value of the property at 6th April 2015, or the time-apportioned value at 6th April 2015 based upon the period of ownership, whichever gives the better result. Therefore, I would recommend getting a formal valuation as at 6th April 2015. Ideally, you would get a valuation from a professional RICS approved valuer - though they cost money. Otherwise, having a number of estate agents value the property independently and taking a sensible mid-point would seem a sensible compromise until we know more. We expect more details to be fleshed out in draft legislation which will be published shortly.

MEMBER IN THE SPOTLIGHT
For this issue’s Member in the Spotlight feature, we are pleased to feature Member James Forrester. James is the co-founder of UFIT Urban Fitness, Crossfit Bukit Timah and head coach of Singapore Rugby and Wanderers Rugby Club. As a former England and Gloucester rugby player, he was forced to retire early through injury in 2008. He was one of the three finalists in the category of Young Professional of the Year for British Chamber of Commerce Singapore’s 15th Annual Business Awards. In this exclusive interview, he shares with us some insights into his life in Singapore.
When did you join the Club and reason for doing so… It was the summer of 2011, by then we had 2 children and wanted somewhere nice we could take them at the weekend where they could play with some friends. We live in a house rather than condo so the pool and gym are a great asset to us at the weekend! When I am not working, you would probably spot me at… Either coaching rugby as I am the head coach of Singapore Rugby and also The Wanderers or in the pool at the British Club being used as a climbing frame by my 3 children. What I like best about Singapore is… The ability to spend a lot of time outdoors , it reminds me of the summer term at school pretty 12 months of the year. I like to lead and active lifestyle and love coaching so Singapore helps with that. I also love the travel options in the region. What I love best about Rugby is… Without doubt the camaraderie and friendships, when I was forced to retire in 2008 that was what I missed the most. I missed that winning feeling in a changing room after a big game with all your best mates. My hobbies… With running a business and all my coaching and having 3 kids I don’t find a huge amount of time for much else. I still try and train 5 times a week, largely crossfit sessions and apart from that just going out for some good food with my beautiful wife! Please share with us your favourite restaurant/s in Singapore… That’s tough can I choose a few? I love a good steak and thai food so.. Family meal – Verandah Café – British Club Best Steak – Bistecca – Muhamad Sultan Road Thai – Soi 60 – Robertson Quey Oxwell’s – On Club St for great British food. Being a fitness professional, what advice can you give to help our Members stay fit? For me life is about balance, something I leant from being a professional rugby player for 10 years, you have to enjoy life and reward yourself. For sure I will enjoy a roast at the British Club and a beer on a Sunday night but then come Monday morning I’m back on my usual good habits with green tea and an omlette. I aim to eat really well about 90% of the time. My main two bit of advice is be active, pretty much every day, people spend too much time sitting down nowadays. I do some sport of exercise every day even if its just a walk or swim. Secondly people just consume far too much sugar / carbohydrates. The average human in the western world has enough energy stored to run two marathons. Eat for nutrients not for energy. I only really eat carbohydrates like brown rice and sweet potato within an hour of my training otherwise I avoid them. Two obvious bits of advice but the simplest things in life work!

Bellingham has a history that can be traced back to 1693 when the land was granted to one of the original French Huguenot families that settled in the Franschhoek Valley of the Cape winelands. Through the centuries, Bellingham has produced wines under the hand of many visionary and talented proprietors, but none so dynamic and respected as Bernard Podlashuk, who is regarded as the great patriarch and founder of the world class Bellingham wine brand of today. Bellingham’s Bernard Series of wines honours the memory of the man known fondly a Pod, who is responsible for many South African ‘firsts’ in wine, including the first dry white blend, the first Rose and the first Shiraz single variety released in the Cape. The winemaking team is driven by his inspired passion, emotion and innovation in order to create fascinating modern wines of interest to the ever-changing consumer palate. Bellingham’s winemaking philosophy is one of minimal intervention. Time-honoured methods are combined with measured modern technological expertise, with a particular emphasis on mouth-feel and intensity of fruit. This makes their wines daringly unique and extraordinarily appealing.

The British Club’s Craft Group The British Club Craft Group had a very successful stall at the Christmas Bazaar. After 12 months of planning, we had a quilt to raffle and four other quilts to sell, together with an assortment of colourful Christmas decorations, table runners, place mats, coasters, bunting, angels and memory boxes, to name just a few of the goodies on sale. Everything was handmade by the ladies of the group, and at bargain prices. The members donated fabric, time and energy to ensure the stall was a success. All proceeds from the stall were donated to the Club’s two charities, Riding for the Disabled - Singapore, and the Gurkha Welfare trust. The stall raised more than $5,600, which was split between the two charities. It was a fantastic and marvellous achievement, and at the group’s recent AGM, the ladies applauded the project leader, Sally Macintosh, who coordinated this splendid group effort. The craft group meets every Tuesday 10am to 3pm in the Treetops Lounge at The British Club. We are a lively group of ladies, and we welcome and support new members. Do come and join us . Member’s Feature for Peter Pan – A Never-ending Story
Peter Pan: A Never-ending Story
When I volunteered to do this report for the British Club, I didn’t quite know what I was expecting from the show. However, when I went to see it with my family, I definitely wasn’t disappointed. Peter Pan, A Never Ending Story had everything an amazing family production needed, good set design, incredible performers and a unique twist on a typical stage show. You see, what I wasn’t expecting to happen at the performance was the fact that the actors didn’t have any speaking lines. There was a running narration from Stacey Solomon (Tinkerbelle) but apart from that, actors sang chart topping songs that the majority of the crowd knew and loved. The actors were extremely talented, in particular, Sandor Stürbl and Lilly-Jane Young, who play Peter and Wendy. I thought their performance of Forever Young, originally by Alphaville was particularly good. The way the set was designed was incredible. In my opinion, it deserved awards , with a book themed look, and costumes that interlinked with that idea. The storyline was very similar to classic Peter Pan plot, but with certain twists that made this show original. For example the fact that Tinkerbelle was a lot more temperamental than in the Disney movie, and considerably more cold towards Wendy, to the point where she wants Wendy dead. It was parts of the show like this that really made me understand why Peter Pan is on a world arena tour. However, with any good stage performance, Peter Pan, A Never Ending Story, had its flaws. I thought that although the mechanics were amazing, the crew could have made them more subtle. For example – when Peter and Wendy were ‘flying’ the harness was chunky and very obvious to the audience.. This, in a way, took away some of the magic that was built up throughout the performance. I also think the show may have achieved more with less. Although the story was incredible, I felt has though as it drew closer to the intermission, the production had some areas of the plot that could have the show could have easily gone without, because it felt as though they were building up for a large plot twist that never happened. Overall, I adored the performance and would not only recommend it to anyone who is thinking of going, but return to the show. – Sarah Stone

SQUASH
During the battle, BC rebels managed to steal secret directions to the‘Squash Star’ HQ of the Empire’s allies in the Crikkit system. The SCC stormtroopers are known to be armed with enough squash power to dominate an entire tournament. Despite the threat of these sinister agents, the BC rebels flew into Crikkit knowing they were the only ones who could win there and restore freedom and balance to the COSMOs.... The first two rebel fighters into battle were Chewbacca and Han Solo. Both started strong and within 10 minutes, the BC rebels were 1-0 up on both courts. Chewbacca dominated his opponent with pure physicality while Han’s laid-back approach let everyone know there was no problem The Empire Strikes Back From there, the SCC troopers showed their strength, fighting back with drop shots, boasts and laser blasts down the walls to win both games 3-1. It was not looking good for the rebels as Han was taken away to be encased in carbonite. Return of the Squash Jedi Next up was R2-D2 (fittingly on court 2) playing one of the Crikkit troops who looked like Yoda. R2 squeaked and bleeped to a very efficient and convincing win. Meanwhile next door Princess Leia (no gold bikini) was on court with a giant called Jayant, rumoured to be part of the Hutt clan. After a shaky start the Princess’s agility and fighting spirit came to the fore and it was another 3-0 win for the rebels. That set the stage for the final massive battle. Luke Skywalker against Darth Cowell, Dark Lord of Crikkit. They went toe-to-toe with light sabres drawn. Luke won the first game and then the second, but the Empire was not done. Darth Cowell surged forward and took an easy game 3 and a close game 4. The force was strong with Luke Skywalker, though, and he felt the ghostly presence of his mentor Obi Wan Kenobi at the back of the court. Just as he had when he destroyed the Death Star, he found the crack, literally, in Darth Cowell’s defences, smashing a forehand into his opponent’s backside for a stroke on match point. A great win for the rebels was celebrated with food, ale and dancing Ewoks, but still no gold bikini. Staring Jason Kynoch as Chewbacca Matt Gyde as Han Solo Steve Settle as R2D2 Craig Telmer as Obi Wan Kenobi Jamie Salamon as Princess Leia Ben Kiggell as Luke Skywalker

Our outgoing golf convener Jonathan Woodward was asked a few probing questions about his golfing habits, as we already know those of Tiger, right? Hope you all enjoy. And you are? Jonathan Woodward (of course) Tell us why you’re in Singapore: I manage the FX trading business in Asia Pacific for Thomson Reuters What you like/love about the British Club: The breath of facilities is fantastic but it is really the sense of belonging and the common sense of humour is a godsend. Favourite golf course/hole in the region: Avondale, Sydney. It’s a hidden Gem on the north shore with a magnificent layout, great wildlife, a relaxed membership and no tee times. What you might shoot on a good day; A good day is breaking 80. Once, I was standing in the middle of the 16th fairway when my match play opponent pointed out that I was three under par. Whilst I managed to win the match I dropped four shots on the next three hole to finish one over!!?? Claim to Fame: Playing off a single figure handicap for 35 years and never getting a hole-in-one. I have holed out from 240 yards but that was for a birdie on a par 5 (?!) and I didn’t even see that one go in because I couldn’t be bothered to watch. And what’s in your golf bag Jonathan? Driver Spec: Taylormade SLDR 460cc 12.5 set 1 degree lower with the weight in the fade position which just means I draw the ball less. Driver Shaft: Matrix Ozik 6M3 – A low spin & low launch shaft Fairway Woods: No’s & Shaft: Callaway X2 Hot 4 wood with Tour AD SF – 6 shaft, Mizuno MX700 17 degree Hybrid standard shaft (must be time for an upgrade!) Irons: Mizuno MP-69 with Project X 5.0 shafts (4 iron through to pitching) Wedges: Big Fish 51 & 55 degree with GPS HiRev shafts (lots of spin), Mizuno MP R series 60 degree Putter: Taylormade Rossa Mallett Ball: Titleist ProV1 Aids: Rangefinder Mascot/Charm/Memorabilia: I collect course maps from each of the courses I have played and metallic markers. I also have 6 pictures of me with tour pros (Peter Alliss, Bernard Gallagher, Padraig Harrington, Matt Goggin, Marcel Siem & Tim Wilkinson) Anything else? I recommend getting fitted for your shafts. It is not just for low handicappers and it makes a huge difference to your consistency and distance. I use Eric at Big Fish Golf who is a relaxed, knowledgeable professional who has helped me, my son and numerous friends increase the enjoyment of the game. Andrew Kemp, from the Sarojin, recently paid him a visit and is now hitting the ball almost 20 yards further with his long irons but more importantly they now land closer to the intended target. Thanks Jonathan, happy golfing and good luck seeking out that elusive hole-in-one.

Section Report By Helen Tynan RS – Backstroke ET – When did you move to Singapore? RS – February 2012. I left the Philippines after 9 years of coaching ET – How many years have you been at the BC? RS – 2 years ET – What made you choose the BC? RS – It is a blessing for me to be assigned to the BC by Coach Alain (Total Swimming Director) as he believed my experience and credentials were a good fit for this club ET – What’s your favourite part of coaching the Barracudas? RS – Working with the developmental squad and teaching them how to train ET – What’s your worst part of coaching (I’m thinking you need to be careful here Rolando!) RS – Working with the squad (uh oh...) because we need to get it right with their club swimming and school swimming (phew...that’s a fair enough reason!) ET – Where would you like to see us go as a club next? RS – To join and participate in the Singapore National swim meet ET – How do we do that? RS – Need to qualify and one of the qualifications is the 400metre race for age 10+ so I’m now looking at longer distances with the team ET – What do we as a club and swimmers need to work on? RS – Trust your coaches and commit to swimming What better way to start the New Year than to recap on some of the highlights of the swimmers last season and to find out a little bit more about our Head Coach Rolando Samentiero
ET – What are your hobbies?
Emma Thomas (ET) – Where are you from Rolando? Roland Sarmiento (RS) – Manila in the Philippines
RS – Le Clos and Phelps for the butterfly andn Kitajima for the Breastroke
ET – Is swimming a big sport in the Philippines?
ET – And finally, what have been your highlights from 2014?
RS – Not as big as basketball but the level is getting higher and better.
RS – From less than 90 swimmers in the combined squad group we now have over 120 kids. Great competitive level at the Merlion and Neptune league. Swimming stroke and technique improvement and the discipline of all children a lot better.
ET – How old were you when you started swimming and where were you? RT – I was 18 and at college. It was during my PE classes that I learnt to swim ET – That’s quite old. Why did you start so late? RS – Swimming was an expensive sport to learn and I spent a lot of time playing basketball ET – When did you want to become a swimming coach? RS – 2 years later when I was 20 and still at college I started to teach some of my friends that couldn’t swim and I really enjoyed it
RS – Badminton and volleyball ET – Who’s your favourite swimmer?
ET – Thanks Rolando – here’s to a great 2015 and achieving all your goals ahead. Alain, Rolando, Rowena and their great team of coaches have already worked wonders with all the swimmers at the British club. SPORT & FITNESS FOOTBALL:
Convenor’s Report
By James Morris & Rob Allen
2014 has been yet another successful, entertaining and most enjoyable year both on and off the field of dreams. The North have continued their dominance in the bi-annual North V South intersection challenge winning both games this year on the floating platform pitch at Marina Bay; we enjoyed two successful tours to Manila and Bali winning three games, drawing one and losing just the one; we hosted HMS Daring, which included a tour of the battleship, and HMAS Stuart; Nick Groth blasted his way into the record books by reaching 200 goals for the club with Robbie Allen and Paul Richardson both making the 100 goal landmark; it was a nearly year in the leagues coming runners up in the Equatorial Premier League, Equatorial Qualifying League and the D2D Golden League; and at the time of writing we are preparing for a Cup final against the Belgium side ‘BLAS’ which will hopefully see us win some silverware. 2014 has also seen us wave goodbye to some football stalwarts and legends – Grant Hall, Andy Petyt, Kieron Harlowe, Jamie Thuillier, Aaron Reader, Kieran Turnbull you are all missed and unfortunately we shall soon see Paul Richardson, Barry Woolhead and Darren Whatmore leave Singapore. Sad days indeed, but as one departs, so often new talent appears! We have welcomed Nick and Luke Challoner (a tremendous dad/ son combo and Northerners too!), Stewart Frame, Iresh Baskar, Matteo, the Rickards, Bryan Weir and Alan Jope. All new members are welcome and we hope many more of you will feel the urge to don those boots once again. Just for context we have members playing as young as 14 years and as wise as 63 years old. As long as the body can move in more than one direction, you can kick a ball and you enjoy rehydrating with a few cold ones you will no doubt be a legend within the section before you know it. 1st XI Report (Captain: Paul Hackett; Vice Captain: Mark Saurin) A new season, a new start and some changes! The new campaign has started well for the first XI and we were unbeaten in the League and Cup, well until we decided to play at 1pm two weeks ago against TGA! Our first defeat of the season was hard to swallow, but never a truer statement “mad dogs and English men......!” We were certainly mad to play then!! Despite our first defeat we sit atop the table and have taken some big scalps already this year having beaten the likes of the Singapore Cricket Club and the Rampant Casuals. We admittedly, have played more games than most and we can expect a tough campaign with Gaelic Lions once again looking formidable, but no complaints thus far! A solid win in the semi finals saw us wave goodbye to a longstanding and ageing Andy Petyt, who has left to head to Hong Kong, the VC and statesman signing off with a clean sheet and a goal, a typical header (read lucky) to seal victory against a young and technically very good team. The final will be against Blas in a few weeks time, and it would be great to some silverware back at the BC! We’ve appointed Mark Saurin as the new VC, big shoes to fill, but we are confident of your abilities. 2nd XI Report (Captain: Bill Palmer; Vice Captain: Steve Clark) As Equatorial Football League (EFL) QD champions in 2012-13, the 2nd XI were full of confidence for the 2013-14 season. Despite a few departures our flourishing section welcomed important new faces in the form of a Kiwi goalie (!!) and an ex-British Hotspur hoping to relive former glory. However, the season proved more challenging and a lack of ruthlessness and losing games from winning positions meant only third place. Credible enough, but we have high standards in the seconds and were disappointed! Having declined the opportunity of promotion to the EFL Premier Division (we didn’t want to show up the BCFC 1st XI!), we currently sit second in our league having won 3, drawn 1 and narrowing losing the other game. pups makes for an interesting blend in a team that always tries to play simple yet efficient football, so a big thank you to all those who have contributed, both on and off the field, to help make the seconds a very special team. 3rd XI Report (Captain: Mike Hughes; Vice Captain: Neil Johnson) The British Club 3rd team had a tough season playing in the young and competitive ESPZEN 4th Division. Not being the youngest squad of players, most Saturdays were spent chasing younger opponents and using experience to counter speed. By the end of the season, we had managed to climb into a very respectable 3rd place thanks to players such as Andrew Moore, Stephen Mangham, Darryl Branch and Neil Johnson, to name only a few. Next season the team will move into the ESPZEN Vets League where we are expecting to find a few more players closer to our age. 4th XI Report(Captain: Alan Jope; Vice Captain: Robin Thuillier) The “British Club 4th 11” was re-christened as the “British Club D2D Vets” earlier this year. The league we are playing in requires players to be over 35, though with up to three under 35’s allowed on the pitch at any one time the standard can be fairly competitive. Since the name change, we have welcomed 78 different players, with a combined result from all competitions and friendlies of Played 22, Won 11, Drawn 4, Lost 7. In addition to an estimated 2,496 years of playing experience in the squad, we are the only team in the club which has had over 300,000 hits on a YouTube video featuring a particular highlight from one of our games. “Go Vets!”
