Dear Members, I’ll like to start this month’s message with a saying, “Life does not come with a manual, it comes with a mother”. Isn’t that fabulous? Many youngsters (and fathers like me) will soon find themselves panicked at the thought of another Mother’s Day and little time, or maybe imagination, to do justice to the person we rely upon most. International Mother’s Day falls on the 12th of May, which is a Sunday. On this special Sunday, the Club will open up the Elizabeth Suite for a Champagne Brunch and the Windsor Arms, Mountbatten Bar and Grill and Verandah Café will also be
appreciate all that is on offer and will contribute to the longevity of our organisation. Our existing members are the best channel to recruit new members and the Club offers great incentives for each of us to make introductions. Over to you!

It was a night of fun as many cackled the night away whilst enjoying the Club’s signature curry buffet. This month, celebrity chef Darren McGrady will bring you a 5-course dinner fit for kings and queens (quite literally). Chef Darren has cooked for Queen Elizabeth II, Diana, Princess of Wales, and Princes William and Harry to name a few. Take advantage of this special opportunity to savour the best of the best.

It’s also time for a reminder to all members that the Club is open for new members. We face the challenge of around two hundred families leaving our membership and leaving Singapore each year. Ideally the leavers will be replaced by new members who will

• GM’S MESSAGE •
Dear Members, A third of a year has gone by in a flash and I certainly hope you have had a good 2019 thus far. The Club celebrated two Best of British events – Only Fools and 3 Courses, and the Comedy Nights in March and April which were very well received. You can check out some of the pictures taken during the night in this issue. This month, we will look to keep up the momentum with two special evenings, with Royal Chef – Darren McGrady. He was personal chef to Queen Elizabeth II, Diana, Princess of Wales and Princes’ William and Harry for fifteen years and has cooked for Presidents’ Ford, Reagan, Bush, Clinton and Bush. He is now a chef, author, culinary consultant and public speaker living in Dallas, Texas. His first cookbook titled ‘Eating Royally: Recipes and Remembrances from a Palace Kitchen’ is now in its sixth print. Rumour has it that the menu will include Princess Diana’s favourite dessert! Find out more on page six of
the magazine and book early to avoid disappointment. On the Membership side of things, I’m happy to inform that we are extending the Member Referral special where referring Members get triple rewards point of up to 60,000 (worth $1,200 in F&B credits) for every successful sign-up. If you have friends or acquaintances that are interested, it’s the perfect time to refer. In the recent months, we have received questions with regards to the glitz and mystery behind the Gold and VIP Black cards. As such, we have collated all the relevant information which you can find on page 15 of the magazine.

THE BRITISH CLUB
Brits have always had a fascination with property, and it’s a fascination that continues for those who live abroad. A large amount of British expats will own property back in the UK, perhaps by hanging onto their former family home for their return, buying property for their children or as a longer term investment. As the scope and complexity of HM Revenue & Customs’ requirements grow and develop, making use of the permitted reliefs on property investments is one-way UK citizens living overseas can ensure they’re maximising their tax benefits. Here are five examples:
FIVE EASY WAYS TO MAXIMISE TAX BREAKS ON UK PROPERTY By Huw Wedlock, The Fry Group
1.
Properties purchased to let out as furnished holiday accommodation (FHL) attract business tax reliefs including using the profits as contributions to a tax allowable pension. Plus, unlike buy-to-lets, you can stay in these properties when you are visiting the UK.
2.
Bed and breakfasts (B&Bs) are also treated as businesses with business property reliefs, such as lower income taxes and inheritance taxes. And, as with FHLs, you can stay in the B&B when visiting the UK if it is run as a business with a manager during your absence abroad.
3.
University-located property: With sons or daughters going to UK university, any accommodation you buy there in your child’s name will attract lower stamp duty if the value is under £500,000 using the 'first time buyer' relief. Also, rental income on extra bedrooms gets ‘renta-room’ tax relief up to £7,500 a year – and on sale, the property may be exempt from capital gains tax.
4. Owning a farmhouse and farmland in the UK or Europe attracts many tax reliefs as it is treated as a business. You can appoint a farm manager to run the farm in your absence abroad and, as with to FHLs, you then have somewhere to stay when in the UK or Europe. A farm and farmhouse can also benefit from 100% inheritance tax relief. 5.
Student accommodation: If you invest in halls of residence for higher-education students, you will pay a reduced commercial rate of stamp duty – and halls of residence can provide you with a good source of regular income.
You can also access a number of other property-related tax benefits such as multiple dwellings purchase relief. With the UK’s strong tradition of investing in property as a way of providing for the future, ensuring you do so in a tax-efficient way makes sense and can reap significant benefits when done wisely. It’s always important to note that everyone’s situation and portfolio is different. If some of the above ideas suit your situation or you want to know more, our UK-qualified tax advisers and financial plans can help explain.

• MEMBER IN THE SPOTLIGHT •
For this issue of Member in the Spotlight, we are pleased to feature
Vinita and her family.
Vinita joined the Club in October four years ago. She is an Editor, Writer, and a Storyteller at Kontinentalist. Learn more about Vinita, and her experiences at the Club so far.
1. Tell us more about yourself and your profession.
I am an editor, writer, and essentially a storyteller by profession. I’ve always been passionate about writing and I’m lucky to be able to do that professionally. At Kontinentalist, I write about issues ranging from politics to wildlife conservation, human rights and the arts. We’re in one of the most exciting regions in the world and Asia is on the rise, so I love being a writer here. There are so many stories to tell!
My husband Mahdev and I have a two-year old daughter, Sahana, who is quite a handful! She is also at the age where she is starting to talk a lot, so it's definitely a fun and exciting time for us as parents.
2. What brought you to the British Club and what made you join?
My family and I chanced upon a Membership advertisement back then and came to the Club for a peek. We've all lived and studied in the UK at some point in our lives (parents, in laws and us). So a visit to The British Club brought back fond memories of the past. The Club captures the mood and atmosphere of pubs and small boutique hotels in the UK and we felt at home here. There is something for everyone, no matter how young or old you are! So we were undeniably sold.
3. Share with us your thoughts for the Work Hub.
When I joined the Club in 2015, the current Work Hub was still a quaint and cosy Library. Whilst it was a beautiful and comfortable place, I think the Club made the right decision to convert it into a Work Hub because of changing needs. As a writer, I enjoy a quiet space away from the concrete jungle. The Work Hub is perfect for that, as long as I have my coffee, laptop and wi-fi! These days, the Work Hub is so popular that you need to get here early and grab a seat before they’re all taken!
4. What is your favourite dish at the British Club?
I am a vegetarian and I love the Greek Salad at Verandah Café and pretty much all the Indian options at the Club. It is fantastic to see that the Club is introducing more vegetarian and vegan options and I look forward to trying them very soon.

Stress and Anxiety:
The Facts
Common mental disorders are increasing worldwide. Between 1990 and 2013, the number of people suffering from depression and/or anxiety increased by nearly 50%, from 416 million to 615 million (WHO). Mental disorders account for 30% of the global non-fatal disease burden. What is stress? Stress is a common human emotion and it is completely natural for us to experience stressful periods at certain points in our lives. Stress is an expected part of life in Singapore, particularly for those working in executive roles with regular travel, deadlines and high levels of responsibility. Stress serves a protective function in our evolutionary history by mediating the 'flight or fight' response to protect us from danger. Being stressed heightens our awareness and focus and prepares the body to respond to a threat. What humans have not evolved very well to cope with is persistent stress. When we are exposed to even low level stress on a day-to-day basis, problems can arise. Stress vs anxiety
Anxiety related disorders
Anxiety frequently occurs in people who have been chronically stressed, however in many it can happen with no obvious trigger. One of the key differences between stress and anxiety is that most people can clearly recognize why they feel stressed. In anxiety the focus shifts away from the trigger/situation and onto the feelings and emotions being experienced. You can start to feel anxious about feeling anxious.
These disorders include the following:
Symptoms of anxiety As it becomes more severe, anxiety can lead to physical symptoms: • • • • • •
Sleep problems Restlessness, agitation, anger Loss of appetite Low mood/depression Palpitations, dry mouth, nausea, chest pains Panic attacks
•
Generalized anxiety disorder (GAD) is a common anxiety disorder characterized by uncontrollable worrying. Sometimes people worry about bad things happening to them or their loved ones, and at other times they may not be able to identify any source of worry.
•
Panic disorder is a condition that causes panic attacks, which are moments of extreme fear accompanied by a pounding heart, shortness of breath, and a fear of impending doom.
•
Post-traumatic stress disorder (PTSD) is a condition that causes
flashbacks or anxiety as the result of a traumatic experience.
•
Social phobia is a condition that causes intense feelings of anxiety in situations that involve interacting with others.
•
Obsessive-compulsive disorder is a condition that causes repetitive thoughts and the compulsion to complete certain ritual actions.
When to seek help If you feel that you are experiencing issues in coping with feelings of stress and anxiety, remember that help is available. Come and speak to your GP and we can help you find ways to feel better. It is important to remember that most people will experience symptoms of anxiety at some point in their life and most will make a complete recovery. The key is recognizing the problem, sharing your feelings and seeking help before things get worse.

• SPORTS & FITNESS • TENNIS:
PREVENTING TENNIS INJURY By Liza Rowan Assuming you’re passionate about the beautiful game of tennis, which I know you are, then I’m sure your heart goes out to those ‘off court’ due to injuries. We’ve seen Andy Murray in tears, and at the Club we all know of friends who’ve had to hang up their racket for a while as they plough through a recovery period. To help minimise the risk of finding yourself in the same unfortunate situation, I spoke to a few experts at the Club to get their advice. According to Sabriman, Personal Trainer at the British Club gym, one of the most common mistakes people make is doing static stretching before playing tennis. Static stretching is fine if your activity does not include jumping, running or constantly changing direction, which we all do on court. To prepare your muscles to explode safely, dynamic or ballistic stretching is recommended. This will give your muscles a good range of power, so you are able to hit harder, run faster and jump higher.
It is after your play when static stretching is important. Sabriman suggests spending 10 minutes or more to stretch your muscles, especially the side that is used more during tennis. This may involve yoga type stretches or using a foam roller for areas that you feel need extra attention. If you’re tight on time, Sabriman recommends these 2 stretching exercises, holding for 20 seconds minimum: 1. Stretch thigh muscles by standing straight; hold your ankle until it touches the back of your leg, so your knee is bent but inline with your other knee. 2. Stretch your shoulders by holding on to a railing or something stable, with arms straight, lean yourself into the stretch.
In line with this, coach director, Cyril, suggests slow running around the court to gently activate the muscles. Variating types of steps that are used during a match such as side steps, back steps, with small acceleration back and forth is also recommended. To bring things further, use a skipping rope to warm up your leg muscles, core muscles, arms and shoulders. Skip for 1 minute without a break if possible, then rest for 30 seconds and repeat this 5 times. Skipping activates the blood circulation which also gives better focus. (FYI - there are skipping ropes of various lengths in the British Club gym, so no excuses!)
Our choice of exercise off court also impacts our risk of injury. Tennis involves many quick sudden movements and it is demanding on certain joints (elbow, rotator cuff, knee, ankle), so best to choose a sport that doesn’t involve similar repetition. For cardio, Sabriman recommends cycling, swimming or power walking as opposed to running or soccer, as the latter involve many similar moves used when playing tennis.
Next, Cyril recommends using an elastic band to warm up your core and arm muscles. Simply reproduce your tennis swing such as forehand, backhand or serve with this band, which will create some resistance for your muscles to warm up gently. You can also simulate these moves with your tennis racket (still in its cover for added resistance ) before you start play.
While these tips will help you stay injury free, I know you’re as keen to know the exercises that will help improve your game. Next month, we will recommend the best conditioning exercises that help build power and strength to get the most from your tennis moves.
These warm-up exercises should not take more than 10 minutes to complete. Thereafter, head on court to enjoy some gentle ground strokes, volleys, serves and returns with your opponent as you break in the tennis balls before your game.
In the meantime, keep yourself injury-free by engaging in the warm-up and cool-down routine as provided by our own British Club experts!

CRICKET SECTION REPORT By Paul McNee
As the long dry spell continued in Singapore, The British Club Cricket team continued to play most weekends during February and March. Since taking down the SCC at their home ground on the Padang, the team has increased in confidence with a marked turnaround in results. The highlight for this period was a LAST BALL win against Non Benders CC. After losing the toss for the 20th consecutive game, we again were first in the field during the heat of the day. Captain for the day - Gaurav Lakhanpal started the game with an 8/1 offside field with clear instructions to the bowlers to not bowl anything on the leg side.
While confident we had kept the opposition to a very gettable score, given past history we knew that we would need to bat well to bring home the bacon. Despite a solid 22 for the ever reliable Ross Marsh, we got off to a slow start and soon found ourselves 6/70 off the first 18 overs with the target looking further and further out of reach. Our confidence wasn’t improved by the fact that the next batsman McNee, was coming off a run of 0,1,0,1 in his last 4 innings.
However, thanks to some calm words of advice from teammate Marsh ‘you can do it mate’, McNee 27 and Ownsworth 25 put on a partnership of 40 off the next 6 overs taking us within sight of the target. Roger Kelly 12 These tactics were in direct contrast to the previous game and Adam Lawrence 14 both scored quick runs to keep where Captain McNee started the first over with sweepers the momentum up before Todd Buck came out with us on the square boundaries. Everyone was keen to see which needing 18 off the last 2 overs. tactics were going to work best. Luckily for Gaurav, the BC bowlers Karan Narang and Lee Ownsworth stepped up to Todd and Adam got us to within one run before Adam was the mark and bowled a perfect line as the Non Benders stumped and the above mentioned Gary Smith walked out were soon in trouble, losing both openers cheaply. to face the last ball with us needing one run to win. I am not sure if memories of his misfield of the last ball of the All the BC bowlers stuck to the task well with Karan 1/12 opposition’s Innings was still in the back of his mind, but I off 5, Paul McNee 3/19 off 5 and Roger Kelly 2/22 off can certainly say it was in mine. 5 leading the way. Non Benders Captain Ajay Agarwal was the standout batsman for the opposition scoring Despite the added pressure, Smithy managed to get bat an unbeaten 55 to get them to a total of 164. The Non on ball and with Todd backing up half way down the wicket Benders innings finished with most of the BC fielders they managed to scamper through for a well-deserved wilting in the heat, most notably Gary Smith, who despite victory. Next game, we come up against Woodpeckers CC, being usually very solid in the Field, badly misfielded the a team we have only ever beaten once. Hopefully with our final ball of the innings, giving away an extra run. I recall recent success, we are ready to change that. at the time thinking ‘I hope that run doesn’t cost us the game’.
