GM’S MESSAGE

Dear Members, Here’s wishing everyone a happy Labour Day! Sunday, 11 May, is International Mother’s Day. Let mum take a rest from her busy schedule and treat her to a delicious lunch at the Club. All outlets are whipping up a treat for the entire family. This is also the perfect time to pamper mum with an indulgent spa treatment at Chinois Spa at the Sports Centre. For the wine connoisseurs, be sure to attend the Ash Ridge Wine & Gourmet Dinner on Friday, 23 May. Ash Ridge of New Zealand produces handcrafted, single estate wines which reflect the unique vineyard location, the passion for wine-making and the premium quality. Come and meet the winemaker himself, Mr Chris Wilcock, to find out more about his wines. As President had mentioned in his message, the Best of British (BOB) 2014 celebrations are now only a month away and I am sure you have seen the banners showcasing the activities along the street up to the Club house. The BOB celebrations will come in many forms, and I am delighted to announce that Pete Price, who provided us with much laughter from his comedy show last year, will be back this year as our Master of Ceremonies and the face of the Best of British. Multi-award winning comedian Mark Maier and one of the UK’S top stand up comedians Mike Gunn together with Pete Price will be taking the reins in providing comic relief on 13 June. We are also pleased to have celebrity Chef Ed Baines, well known for being a judge on Britain’s Best Dish programme as our culinary expert. On the sporting front, we have the amazing Liverpool legend, Jan Molby, gracing us this year. Adding to the glitz and glamour of the celebrations, we have designers to the stars, Philip Armstrong and Tony Burke, from luxury label Philip Armstrong who will be showcasing a special collection in partnership with Robinsons. British artists, Emma Rodgers and Horace Panter, with Icon Gallery, will partner us to showcase a range of ‘Best of British’ art. Horace will in fact be at the Art and Music evening on Saturday, 7 June. Also be sure to check out the Windsor Shop for a new collection of Best of British 2014 memorabilia, a wide selection of wines and our May Wine Promotion. With so much activities and events happening at the Club, we are sure May will keep you and your family busy.

“Emma has really pushed the boundaries of British ceramics to make such distinctive works that encapsulate, somehow, the actual spirit of whatever it is she depicts,” says Ms Somarta. “And her work in bronze does the same with that medium. It is completely unique. She is unique.” And Best of British is unique. I feel so privileged to be part of it. Part of you. To be in Singapore is always one my life’s greatest pleasures.

You are invited to attend an informal cocktail evening to showcase the Best of British technology. This evening is a must for you if you are looking to invest in your future based on real products with real-world applications. Anthony Esse Anthony has worked in the investment management profession for over twenty five years and held directorships with Hermes, Newton (Bank of New York Mellon Group) and GT Management plc. In 2003 Anthony set up The Darwin Group, a strategic consulting boutique which provided investors with strategic research into how major quoted companies competed and created shareholder value, and helped smaller quoted companies raise long-term capital directly from internally managed pension funds. Anthony established the Darwin Property Leisure Fund with James Penney in 2007. He is CEO of Darwin Property Investment Management Limited, the Investment Advisor to the Fund, and sits on the board of the Investment Manager. Time for some pensions spring cleaning By David Pugh

Many of us have several different pension plans built up over the course of our working lives. These can range from employersponsored schemes to personal pensions taken out to provide for our retirement. It can be a huge headache to keep track of all these different pension pots while also receiving lots of annual statements. If you now live overseas, it can be even more of a hassle keeping pension providers up-to-date with your contact details. Aside from the administration, monitoring each pension fund’s performance can be time-consuming and some pensions will have better investment choices than others.

If you plan to retire overseas, a qualifying recognised overseas pension scheme (QROPS) could be a good option to consolidate your pension pots into. For an expat, a QROPS can provide income benefits at a lower tax rate than the UK whi¬le part of the fund can be taken as tax-free cash.

For some, consolidating pensions might not be the right thing to do. If you have a defined benefit (‘final salary’) pension for example, it may not be beneficial to transfer into a defined contribution (‘money purchase’) plan as you would be taking on the investment risk, and possibly losing other valuable benefits such as entitlement to bigger lump sums. MEMBER IN THE SPOTLIGHT

Rebecca Bisset Rebecca (right) with her sister, Deborah Law

Editor-in-Chief & Publisher, Expat Living

As part of a new feature on Members of the Club, we are pleased to feature Member, Rebecca Bisset. Rebecca Bisset, the editor-in-chief and publisher of the popular and widely read expat magazine, Expat Living, shares with us in this feature, a brief glimpse into her professional and personal life in Singapore. How many miles have you chalked up travelling to locations around the world in the past 5 years? It looks like I travel more than I do – I probably only take two short breaks a year, but I have stayed in some gorgeous places. Places I would never had had the opportunity to visit – the W Maldives for instance. It was amazing. How many countries have you visited? I have lived in five, but here for 16 years, the longest I have been in one place. So it’s kind of home. People always ask me where I am from and I say do you want the short or long answer? Born in Yemen, short spell in the Midlands, UK, Lesotho, Botswana, Zimbabwe, South Africa, London, Singapore… but the short answer is I’m British. Did you start out to be an editor? My parents were in the middle of moving countries when I finished school, and I was a year young for my year, so I didn’t apply to any universities then. At my dad’s suggestion I went for a two-year diploma in photography and after a few years at a photographer’s (mainly in the dark room) I went to secretarial college (because I wanted to travel and in those days you could temp anywhere) and never got round to university. Both helped get me into a research company in London that progressed into video research and I worked behind the camera, editing and writing research reviews. We had been here a couple of years when a friend said he wanted to start a magazine and would I be the editor. I took the photographs and wrote all of the first issues; then as time went on I was able to pay people who are better than me – and that’s the trick! Expat Living is now partnering British Club for a second year on the Best of British (BOB). What is different about BOB and why does Expat Living want to get involved? There’s a lot going on for the younger generation and as with the magazine I want to make sure all generations are catered for. There are some classic British acts which take us back to our roots and it’s about celebrating the creativity of the British. Although it’s lovely to live here, we can’t forget our strengths and what Britain has to offer: fantastic fashion, comedy, theatre and design. What has Expat Living been to you – where do you see it going in the next five years? It’s an interesting time. All signs point to more digital versions and online portals but a lot of people love the feel and idea of a print magazine. They want to curl up on the sofa with a cup of coffee. We just have to make sure we can be all things to all people. Our new website is looking great – we just hit a whopping 1 million page views! And we have a new e-magazine available from April. Which is your favourite country to visit? I have recently bought a house north of Auckland. I do love New Zealand – it’s a lot cheaper than Singapore too! There’s nothing like the British countryside though. I also love turquoise seawater and snorkelling where you can see heaps of sea life, so the Maldives hits the mark on that; snorkelling next to a turtle there and off the east coast of Malaysia are my great travel moments. I do, however, like to have a holiday when I can do some sightseeing, so places like Yunnan and Siem Reap are also special. The Bali rice fields are lovely too… You work in a female dominated environment – how does that work/not work for you – how are you as a boss? Mmm, I am not sure how good I am at being a boss. I tend to go inside my head a bit too much. But I have some lovely people working for me and some have been here for years, quite a few over eight, so I must do some things right. It’s also difficult getting the balance between wanting to do what’s right for the company and trying to be nice. What are the three must haves for you and your family in Singapore? 1. An annual zoo pass was a must have when the children were younger, there are way more things to do now, but even being part of a club or a place that you go back to often gives children a sense of belonging in this transient Expat life. 2. Carrot cake from hawker centres at one end of the spectrum and Champagne Brunches at the other end. 3. A good pair of sandals that you can walk in, slip on and off easily but don’t dissolve in the rain or rot in the humidity. THE BRITISH CLUB

MENU

EARLY BIRD PROMOTION

Book by Monday, 12 May, and enjoy $10 off per person Ash Ridge Wines is a producer of limited-edition New Zealand wines. Ash Ridge produces all hand-crafted, single estate wines which reflect their unique vineyard locations, a passion for wine making and the premium quality. Their vineyards are found in the Bridge Pa Triangle winegrowing appellation in Hawkes Bay, one of the super premium growing areas which are particularly famous for Chardonnay, Merlot and Syrah. The soils for this area were laid down over ten thousand years ago when the Ngaruroro River gently wound its way through a valley on the western edge of Heretaunga Plains. In time, the river changed its course, leaving gravel soils and low fertility land. We are happy to have Mr Chris Wilcock, Winemaker & Owner of Ash Ridge with us this May to share with us his wines. Chris spent 15 years working in Foreign Exchange trading rooms all over the world, including Singapore, before moving out of the office and into the world of winemaking. Having spent the last 9 years developing Ash Ridge from the ground up, Chris can now share the trials and tribulations of developing a new winery in one of the world’s most exciting wine regions. Despite being one of the new kids on the block, Ash Ridge has an amazing history of producing award winning wines, with 5 Gold medals, 6 Silver medals and 11 Bronze medals from national wine competitions in New Zealand to date, and being awarded the prestigious Hawkes Bay Winery of the Year in 2012. Brought to you in partnership with The Fry Group.

Reservations required.

SPORT & FITNESS Cricket:

REFLECTIONS ON A SEASON OPENING........... Random musings from an entirely random mind. By David Kempton

A fine body of men, if slightly more Home Guard than Colour Guard.....

Curiously “Entirely random” aptly describes cricket with the British Club XI as it sums up our bowling attack, field placing and batting order, and much as captain Todd Buck may insist there’s logic in how all things are done, I sometimes wonder. In addition the quality of performance we deliver is exactly the same, depending on such factors as who’s available that particular week and what was happening Friday night as much as any intrinsic cricketing ability within the squad. Speaking of the squad, it’s generally aging make up means the stresses and the strains of the game are bound to result in injuries over the course of a season, although one can never predict quite who, what or when they’ll be (it’s that “Entirely random” thing again). This season’s first injury occurred in our first fixture as, whilst attempting to take a catch on the boundary, Patrick Jenkins managed to stand on the boundary rope and quite badly twist his ankle. Unfortunately this was not in a glorious attempt to make a dramatic catch and save six runs but whilst practicing slip fielding prior to the game (you couldn’t make it up could you?). Sadly he had to sit out the whole of the game on the veranda, consoled only by an endless flow of beer. Many however might have said he had the best of it as BC’s 2013 player of the season and opening pace, David Bennett, had the BC fielders chasing leather. Benno turned up for the opening fixture as an advert for the joys of (fairly) recently married life, having added inches to his waistline and taken yards off his pace. Astute skipper Todd soon spotted the problem – “Pies”, (which given that’s what he was bowling the THE BRITISH CLUB

other nine not so astute fielders had also worked out without difficulty). However Todd was more concerned with the one’s Benno has been eating and he’s therefore been placed on a diet, which it’s hoped will soon have him back to the same old Benno, albeit just thinner and faster rather than thinner, faster and divorced. Money’s too tight to mention, no, not an invitation to start singing your favourite karaoke song but an observation on the state of section funds. Whilst last season saw a vast improvement in our finances, the same will be needed this year and your new section committee (much the same as the old) is determined to address this. In line with our locale the “Fines System” will become more nuanced and expanded and your new committee man, Gaurav Lakhanpal (“Communications Secretary”) has agreed to take control of this initiative. Very wise as on his fielding performance so far this year he’s going to be fining himself far more than anyone else, the two skyers he missed in the same match both proceeding to earth without hindrance from his hands. He did claim the second had actually brushed his fingers but if so it made minimal difference to the ball’s trajectory to terra firma. So far it’s played six, won three and lost three and a desiccated Turf City has encouraged run making. So much so that Cargill managed 244 for 6 from their 30 overs, turning zeros into ones, ones into twos and twos into threes. Sadly our fielders couldn’t cope but our response of 225 for 6 was at least credible in defeat.

Opening bat Hosking, after being dismissed once too often playing an early innings pull shot went out to face ANZA determined to play himself in before becoming extravagant in his shot making. The first ball of the innings was of course short and he promptly hooked it over square leg for six. Next delivery was straight, on a good length and he got in such a tangle was bowled neck and crop. Fortunately Todd caught his embarrassment for ever with the perfect picture............. Special mention for new Member Richard Wall, who apparently likes to do most of his fielding in the horizontal position, resulting in some most un-British Club like run saving in the field. So far we can only speculate what the outcome will be once Turf City returns to its more normal not quite so dry state but we certainly don’t think he’ll come off as pristine as he goes on and the entertainment quotient (and fines value) should increase considerably.

Ross Marsh references his National Captain Michael Clarke.

Your committee this year consists of: Convenor: Paul Twine Treasurer: David Bennett Captain: Todd Buck Fixture Secretary: Paul Twine Membership Secretary: Gary Smith Communications Secretary: Gaurav Lakhanpal Match Reporter: David Kempton Tour Organiser: Todd Buck Despite the limitations of our finances there is more work being undertaken to enhance your cricketing experience. Improvements to the “Pavilion” are planned and more regular visits to Scores Bar for after-match dining and drinking experiences with our friendly opposition will be undertaken. So come on down and enjoy yourself to the full. All you have to lose is your dignity!

Hosko – Six and out (French cricket anyone?)...........

Tennis Happenings this Spring By Nousheen Jalal

British Club Open Tennis Tournament – Played Throughout May The Club’s annual Open Tennis Tournament is in full swing right now. The annual tournament started at the end of April and will continue until the end of this month. Every weekend and throughout the week, you will find British Club members playing to get to the next round in the tournament. Last year, we had entrants as young as 13 teaming-up with past Club Champions and a father-daughter pair were runners-up. As I write there are indications that average player will be younger yet. The Club’s junior players are growing in confidence and play thanks to regular play in the junior leagues. Domestic partnerships have been tested on court and survived. The Open is truly open to players of all ages with Club with a competitive streak in them. Players compete in five categories: Men’s Singles, Ladies’ Singles, Men’s Doubles, Ladies’ Doubles and Mixed Doubles. Spend your evenings and weekends at Scores this month to enjoy some great club tennis. Open Tournament Finals are scheduled for Saturday 31 May from 8am onwards – join British Club tennis lovers for a meal at Scores after finals are decided.

Brazilian Night – Party with Latin Passion on Saturday, 10 May The Tennis Section is pleased to announce that plans for the annual party indicate this is going to be another fabulous evening. If you attended last year’s Vegas Night with chips won or lost, you know the Tennis Section welcomes all Club members and their guests at our annual knees-up. Mark your calendars for Saturday 10 May for Brazilian Night – lookout for the posters around the Club. For more information, please email sports@britishclub.org.sg or call the ProShop at 64101173.

Andrew Marshall looking every inch the Grand Master

Masters’ Champion Simon Bird (left) celebrates his win

The spring equinox brings with it thoughts of new beginnings – fresh green leaves on the trees, bluebells pushing their way out of the thawing earth and painting the countryside, and spring lambs frolicking in the fields. Down at the squash courts, however, the end of March was time for the more experienced players to show that they were not yet ready to be put out to pasture. With almost three quarters of the section’s active members over 45, this year’s Masters’ (45 and over) tournament was complemented by a new Grand Masters’ (55 and over) event. Reigning Masters champion Andrew Marshall found the going harder this year as a new generation of younger players had become eligible to challenge for his crown, but was unstoppable in the Grand Masters. He beat Mansoor 3-0 in the final with his usual mix of tricky boasts, very tricky boasts and extremely tricky boasts. In the Masters final, the Black Prince of the courts, 2011 champion Steve Settle, took on the White Knight, Simon Bird – the squash section’s own Prince Charming. Steve fought hard and, unusually for him, managed not to get injured halfway through, but Simon claimed the win in 3 close games. Well done Simon.

The Grand Masters’ finalists

Meanwhile, as well as beating each other up, BC squashers have been thriving in the SSRA leagues which have reached their halfway mark. Our E-graders started with 2 tough losses which brought back memories of the 2013 wooden spoon campaign, but under the leadership of Douglas Morgan they have since strung together 4 wins in a row to leave themselves mid- table. Douglas is leading from the front with his own 4 match winning streak. Our A-graders are also sitting comfortably in the middle of their league after 2 wins and 2 losses, but have a challenging second half fixture list – good luck guys. The Veterans, of course, are leading the way. They started their season with 3 straight wins – all on countback to keep things exciting – before losing to SAFRA, a perennial SSRA powerhouse. See you on court! THE BRITISH CLUB

Half Time BCFC 3-2 in front. The usual half time team talk ensued with James stating that the match was there to be won provided we kept it tight. However within 5 minutes of the restart a free kick dribbled past the unsighted Kieron; score at 3-3. The next 10-15 minutes was quite even. Eventually BCFC started to get on top and a ball down the left wing to Robbie saw him swing over a great cross which was met by a James nipping in just before the keeper to make it 4-3 to BCFC. BCFC continued to press with James shooting over. Then a through ball from mid field played over the top was latched Man of the match was a close run thing but I think James onto by Robbie (who was clearly offside by the proverbial just shaded it from Robbie with Mr. Hackett also putting in a country mile!) was dispatched into the goal. 5-3 and BCFC great shift. were now cruising. However the opposition had clearly not read the script and their centre mid fielder picked up the ball, went on a mazy run beating what seemed like most of our team before crossing to their centre forward to put the ball past Kieron. 5-4 and game on again! The game had been played in great spirits up to this point but then a heated exchange between Mr. Hackett and someone who looked old enough to be his son turned into “handbags”. The game continued with a few more noteworthy moments, the Convenor getting the ball kicked into his manhood area being a particular highlight.

We joined the opposition for a few well-earned beers before the trip back to the hotel where a gathering at the swimming pool turned into a “Jacuzzi squeeze” 16 guys in a space designed for 5. Beer and laughter ensued as we enjoyed the spoils of the win. A short while later we met in the lobby for the beginning of the evening entertainment. Dinner at the local sports bar, a bit chaotic with Fraser ending up with 3 meals followed by a few beers and 2 tour virgin speeches, Paddy who regaled us with Irish humour and Jamie who enlightened us on how we was banned from every casino in the world before we set off in search of further entertainment.

The opposition finally made double figures with the last kick of the game. 10-1. On reflection we had seen a great footballing lesson by a very good side. The game was played in good spirit with many good performances from BCFC but my ‘man of the match’ goes to Paul Hackett. Tireless running, encouraging and a few crunching tackles. Well done sir. We adjourned to the hotel for well-earned showers. We went off for a few beers, food and the Arsenal-Chelsea game. Match vs SCC April 3rd, 1 injury but won 5-2!

However the assembled BCFC Arsenal suppor ters club thought we were witnessing a re-run of the afternoon events around us to be 3-0 up within 20 minutes and in all honesty as the game unfolded. GOLF SECTION HAPPENINGS By Nigel Spry & Nic Merrow-Smith

Take a moment to register that the May Medal will be played on a weekend, as we travel across the seas to Batam to play a very pleasant course at Palm Springs Golf & Beach Resort. That’s preceded by an outing up north in April where we play Seletar Country Club for the first time in a while. March Medal The March medal was played at Orchid Country Club on Friday, 28 March on the Aranda and Dendro courses. The rather small turnout may be partly due our gate-crashing tactics to keep costs down, Anyway, at least this time we did manage to get out the nearest the pin flags. Of the 12 golfers who challenged for the honours, Gary Cunning took the prize for longest drive and emerged the medal winner with 40 stableford points, edging out Andrew Affleck in the runner up spot on 39 points, who stole in to take the nearest the pin prize. RECIPROCAL CLUB SPOTLIGHT

Beijing American Club CHINA

Since the start of the 20th century, the American Club has established itself as among the most prestigious international club brands in the world. Beijing American Club is the only such institution in mainland China to carry this international pedigree, enjoying the same status as Hong Kong American Club, Taipei American Club, Singapore American Club and Tokyo American Club. Located on the uppermost floor of the China Resources Building, the tallest structure on Beijing’s second ring road, it is the premier choice for luminaries in all fields, from Beijing and beyond. Founded in 1999, Beijing American Club is considered to be amongst the most prestigious members’ clubs in China. Affiliated with China Resources, one of the most powerful and influential business conglomerates in Hong Kong and mainland China, it boasts a selective and illustrious clientele, numbering local and overseas business elites, diplomats and embassy officials, chief executives and other notables. For over ten years, Beijing American Club has striven to build an elite and close-knit community for its members to conduct social and business interactions at the highest level. Beijing American Club provides members with an environment of stylish distinction, combining subtle colours, fine décor, and classic and contemporary artworks to promote an atmosphere that blurs the distinction between business and pleasure
