Dear Members,

With summer disappearing in the rear-view mirror we are fast approaching the end of the year. Before long, the Christmas festivities will dazzle in the headlights and, as usual, the Club will provide a string of appropriate events and activities for everyone. I hope you can afford some time out of the fast lane to enjoy a break with family and friends over Christmas.

I would describe the last year at The British Club as one of satisfying stability. After a few years of changes to the composition of the Main Committee and a change of General Manager, it has been beneficial to allow relationships to develop and elements of strategy to be implemented without further significant changes to personnel. I believe we have a solid base for the coming year, although it is always desirable to see new members commit time to the governance of the Club. This has been a challenge in recent times and, once again, I encourage members to get involved.

The Annual Report, which will soon be available, will contain some of the details of the encouraging progress but I will share a few highlights below. The team has:

• once again managed finances efficiently to deliver a near break-even operating result, continuing a good trend started some seven years ago when the Club made an operating loss of around $700,000

• finished the year with a strong cash position of just over $5.75 million

• worked hard to manage high attrition of members arising from difficult external economic circumstances and ended the year with more new members and fewer leavers than in 2018 thus putting the Club ahead of where it started, with membership as at early October 2019 having risen even further

• delivered high levels of member satisfaction (evidenced by the results of the 2019 survey and monitoring of feedback forms as well as ad hoc communications)

• completed the reconfiguration of the one-time Jackpot Room into, “The Hangout”, which now sees very high levels of usage; a project developed in conjunction with the Teen Committee

• continued to grow the patronage of The Windsor Arms, more than justifying the investment made in that outlet in 2017 and 2018

• invested in a new pizza oven to compliment the specialist pizza offering that continues to exceed our highest expectations

• re-engineered the menus across the outlets to include more vegetarian and gluten-free options and, recently, to improve the breakfast offering

• delivered an overall food and beverage offering that now consistently meets or exceeds expectations

• altered the layout of the Rabbley Room to provide an environment in which members can work whilst at the Club; another initiative that has seen a positive response

• stepped up the usage of various social media platforms delivering growth in followers of more than 20% y-o-y with, for example, around 3500 on Facebook alone – it is worth noting that our digital channels are now the second highest source of new members (after referral from existing members)

• revamped the member portal that can be accessed via the website to create the opportunity for members to access their accounts, transaction history and make sports bookings online – 83% of respondents in our survey scored the website as good or excellent

• redesigned the club magazine to improve the look and feel as well as the quality of the content, and to use environmentally friendly paper

• completed the implementation of a new IT system and completed a project to ensure the Club is PDPA and GDPR compliant

• driven greater awareness of the Club amongst the wider community, corporates and associations and won an award as, “The Best Social and Sports Club in Singapore”, in the Expat Living survey

• further developed a more environmentally aware approach to everything we do, reinforcing our position as the first club in Singapore to remove plastics, such as straws and bags, from our operations

• continued to provide opportunities for more than five hundred members to be active in the sports sections with many members representing the Club in competitive sports and all enjoying the community and facilities that the Club provides

• raised funds for, and made meaningful donations to, two charities.

I hope that everyone is encouraged by all that is being done and the ongoing effort and commitment of the members that volunteer. As always, I am delighted to give a big thank you to all the staff at the Club for their continued focus on the members; this is one of the key factors that differentiates us from all the other outlets and even the other clubs in Singapore. We are extremely lucky to have a strong, professional and passionate management team, in addition to a loyal and engaged staff.

At the recent staff dinner, I was privileged to present long service awards to many staff members who have been with the Club for a decade or longer. It has been a pleasure working with all of them and I look forward to more of the same.

Every member should be holding a copy of this year’s Festive Supplement. It contains key information on the various events and celebrations taking place at the Club. If you do not have one, don’t panic, you may visit www.britishclub.org.sg to view and book any of the festive promotions and events. Don’t take too long though as the events are always popular and the early bird offers are ending soon.

I wish you all a very Merry Christmas and the very best for 2020.

Dear Members,

The Club’s Annual General Meeting takes place at 7:30pm on 28 November; all voting Members are invited to attend. Our current President Damian Hills will be stepping down after his term has ended. We thank Damian for his excellent contributions and support over the past four years as Club President.

The annual Great British Ball takes place at the Shangri La Hotel on 7 December. At the time of writing, we have only 7 tables left so we expect a full house again with over 600 members and their guests in attendance.

You will have already received our separate Festive Brochure which highlights the many Christmas and New Year events and activities we have planned in December. If you are doing Christmas at home this year you can order your Christmas goodies from the Club, an early bird promotion runs until 1 December.

On 14 October we held our Annual Staff Night, I thank all Members for your support in allowing us to close the Club for one full day. The success of the Club this year would not have been possible without the tireless support and hard work of our staff. I would like to also thank you in advance, for your generous contribution to the annual Hong Bao Fund. This gesture of goodwill will be immensely appreciated and will be given to all staff as a token of appreciation.

On behalf of the Club Management and team, I would like to thank you for the continued support throughout the year and hope you have a wonderful year-end and Christmas season.

FIVE EASY WAYS TO MAXIMISE TAX BREAKS ON UK PROPERTY

Brits have always had a fascination with property, and it’s a fascination that continues for those who live abroad. A large amount of British expats will own property back in the UK, perhaps by hanging on to their former family home for their return, buying property for their children, or as a long-term investment.

As the scope and complexity of HM Revenue & Customs’ requirements grow and develop, making use of the permitted reliefs on property investments is one way UK citizens living overseas can ensure they are maximising their tax benefits. Here are five examples:

1. Properties purchased to let out as furnished holiday accommodation (FHL) attract business tax reliefs including using the profits as contributions to a tax allowable pension. Plus, unlike buy-to-lets, you can stay in these properties when you are visiting the UK.

2. Bed and breakfasts (B&Bs) are also treated as businesses with business property reliefs, such as lower income taxes and inheritance taxes. And, as with FHLs, you can stay in the B&B when visiting the UK if it is run as a business with a manager during your absence abroad.

3. University-located property: With sons or daughters going to UK universities, any accommodation you buy there in your child’s name will attract lower stamp duty if the value is under £500,000 using the 'first time buyer' relief. Also, rental income on extra bedrooms gets

‘rent-a-room’ tax relief up to £7,500 a year – and on sale,\ the property may be exempt from capital gains tax.

4. Owning a farmhouse and farmland in the UK or Europe attracts many tax reliefs as it is treated as a business. You can appoint a farm manager to run the farm in your absence abroad and, as with to FHLs, you then have somewhere to stay when in the UK or Europe. A farm and farmhouse can also benefit from 100% inheritance tax relief.

5. Student accommodation: If you invest in halls of residence for higher-education students, you will pay a reduced commercial rate of stamp duty – and halls of residence can provide you with a good source of regular income.

You can also access a number of other property-related tax benefits such as multiple dwellings purchase relief. With the UK’s strong tradition of investing in property as a way of providing for the future, ensuring you do so in a tax-efficient way makes sense and can reap significant benefits when done wisely.

It’s always important to note that everyone’s situation and portfolio is different. If some of the above ideas suit your situation or you want to know more, our UK-qualified tax advisers and financial plans can help explain.

MEN’S MENTAL HEALTH

Q. What are the common mental health issues experienced by men?

Mental health issues affect both men and women, but some difficulties and influences on mental health may be more prevalent for men. Common mental health problems include Depression, Anxiety Disorders, Bipolar Disorder, Psychosis, Schizophrenia, and Eating Disorders.

Q. What are the statistics? Are these on the increase?

There has been an increase in lifetime prevalence of mental illness in Singapore. According to the Singapore Mental Health Study 2016, 1 in 7 people has experienced a mental health problem in their lifetime. In 2018, 7 out of 10 suicides were committed by men.

Mental illness is a global problem. It is estimated that mental health conditions will affect 1 in 4 people at some point in their lives. In U.S.A., for example, 1 in 5 adults experience a mental health problem each year. Male suicides have been on the rise. More than 4 times as many men as women die by suicide.

Q. What factors contribute to the likelihood of experiencing mental health issues?

One or more factors may influence mental health including daily habits, life stressors, biochemical factors, and meeting the demands of social expectations. For men, societal expectations on how a man should traditionally be perceived and what he should have accomplished in his life, may weigh heavily and thus contribute to mental health issues.

Q. Are men less likely to seek support? Why?

Yes, men are less likely to disclose their mental health issues to others including family and friends. They are also less likely to seek help in fear of embarrassment or shame, and may resort to more harmful coping methods in response to their distress.

Q. What are the common symptoms of mental health issues? Are men’s symptoms slightly different to women’s?

Mental health issues can affect emotions, thoughts and behaviours. Common signs and symptoms include:

• Feeling depressed

• Confused thinking, reduced ability to concentrate, inability to cope with daily problems or stress

• Excessive fears or worries, extreme feelings of guilt or worthlessness

• Emotional outbursts

• Withdrawal from friends and activities

• Significant tiredness, low energy or problems sleeping

• Changes in behaviour or feelings

• Substance abuse

• Appetite changes

• Suicidal thinking

Men have a higher tendency towards substance abuse and antisocial behaviours.

Q. What should men do to get support?

They should seek professional help as mental health issues may get worse if left untreated. There are various avenues to get help, but if you are uncertain where to start, talk to your family doctor.

Q. If a patient comes to you, how does the Doctor diagnose mental health problems?

Diagnosing mental health problems is a process. It often requires multiple steps and may include multiple medical and health professionals. As a family doctor, I am often the first person involved in the patient’s road to recovery when diagnosing mental health issues. Providing adequate time and space for the patient to talk is crucial to finding out the individual’s main concern, his symptoms, and his life story. A physical examination to uncover physical cause for symptoms and laboratory tests to screen for underlying causes may be conducted. For more complex and severe cases I may need to refer the patient to a mental health specialist to assist with further evaluation and management.

Q. How are they treated?

Treatment depends on the type of mental health problem the individual is suffering from. Sometimes having that first open conversation can have a positive effect as I may be able to give useful lifestyle advice. Often a team approach (involving psychologists or counsellors and family members) is appropriate to ensure all psychiatric, medical and social needs are met. Medications do not cure mental health problems, but in some cases, they may be needed to improve symptoms and to make other treatments, such as psychotherapy, more effective. There is no one-size-fits-all treatment. It will be tailored to address individual needs and symptoms.

Q. Do people who suffer mental health challenges tend to make a recovery?

Most individuals with mental health issues can be managed well with proper treatment and intervention. They can get better. Recovery requires continuous attention to your mental well-being and overall health. Therefore, it is important to attend frequent follow-ups with your family doctor. What recovery will mean for you is different than recovery for another person. Working with your family doctor will help you learn healthy ways to manage your condition, and regain and maintain a full and happy life.

CLARE HAXBY STUDIO, LONDON

Fine Art Editions and Original Paintings

PERANAKAN SHOPHOUSES & RAFFLES HOTEL

This year from my studio in Surrey, England, I have been creating some new paintings of Singapore shophouses, which will also serve as my entry to the Art Gemini Prize 2019/2020 held in both London and Singapore.

Besides shophouses in Singapore, I also love developing my collection of London landmarks. You can view my artist diary on my Instagram page where I post day-to-day progress of my paintings of London and Singapore!

NEW: ‘Peranakans and Peonies’ at The Joo Chiat Shophouses

I am excited to share my brand new Fine Art Print in addition to my popular shophouse collection of Emerald Hill, Blair Road, Little India and Clarke Quay. This new print is inspired by the row of coloured shophouses in Joo Chiat. I understand that these shophouses are loved because they say so much about Singapore and its trading history. This piece reflects the intricate and beautiful culture of The Peranakans, who were the original inhabitants of these decorative shophouses.

Peranakans, also known as Straits-born Chinese, were successful traders of spices with a blended culture. The influence of South East Asia and Europe were incorporated through their designs that often featured the peony, a symbol of royalty, wealth, and honour. I have used a Peranakan tile design around the edge of the painting.

Raffles Hotel

I have been following the reopening of the grand dame of hotels, Raffles Hotel, at Beach Road, as it was the first painting I created that began the series of ‘Singapore Landmarks’.

I am grateful for the support of my art from the first painting that I created. Tour guide, Geraldine Lowe, brought people to my studio at the black and white house on Malcolm Road during the popular Black and White House Tour. Since then, my prints and original paintings have expanded into a huge series and found homes with ambassadors and embassies on every continent around the globe.

My Fine Art Prints are limited edition and an affordable way to collect your favourite Singapore Landmarks.

They are each printed on a beautiful etching cotton rag, embossed, and packaged in a gift tube perfect for a leaving gift or Christmas. Each print is also signed and has its own unique edition number.

You can view and order my prints at www.clarehaxby.com.

In your order, indicate that you are a Member of The British club and I’ll include a mini print just for you!

I would also love to hear from British Club members about your favourite buildings and views in Singapore and London as I continue to develop my series.

Email me at clare@clarehaxby.com.

Thank you for sharing my art and have a Happy Christmas and New Year!! Clare x

ADVENTURES OF AN ACCIDENTAL AUCTIONEER

Being an auctioneer takes me into lots of amazing homes. I’m often amazed by the quality and depth of collections that people amass. This month is no different.

We are thrilled to be presenting an exceptional auction in November, featuring outstanding antique Chinese porcelain as well as fine jade, bamboo carvings and ancient bronze mirrors.

The items are from the private collection of Quek Kiok Lee, a well-respected Singaporean collector who started gathering Chinese works of art in the 1960s. We will have over 200 lots, which will be on view at the property, at advertised times. Mr Quek was not just a collector. He meticulously researched every piece and collated detailed records of where each item was purchased, often detailing his supporting research in his journals.

Highlights include:

A large blue and white porcelain ‘Bajixiang’ moon flask, bearing a Qianlong seal mark. Decorated in underglaze blue, the auspicious emblems radiating from a central medallion were inspired by adornments seen on Ming dynasty ceramics. This example was purchased by Mr Quek at Sotheby’s in London in 1974.

The sides of this beautifully moulded, yellow-glazed rectangular jardinière (or narcissus pot) have flowering chrysanthemums, lotus and Buddhist symbols. It is covered in a vibrant yellow glaze - a colour usually reserved solely for the Imperial household and palaces of the Qing dynasty.

Also featured in the sale is a fantastic collection of moulded and carved gourd cricket cages, dating from the 18th - 19th Century. Keeping crickets as pets were commonplace, started by Imperial concubines during the Tang Dynasty. By the Qing Dynasty, elaborate and decorative cages were produced in porcelain, metal and gourd which made perfect homes for the crickets. The art of crafting these cages was highly specialised and was often exquisitely decorated with auspicious symbols or animals. The piece here is moulded with scrolling foliage and flowers.

Mr Quek loved to share his knowledge and experience and was one of the founding members of the Southeast Asian Ceramic Society (SEACS). In 1994, he was also appointed by the Chancellor of Singapore University as the acquisitions advisor for Chinese antiquities.

The catalogue for this fascinating collection will be published on 11 November and the timed auction will close on 25 November. All bidding is via the-saleroom.com.

G’Vine Floraison Gin harmoniously combining vine blossoms with this French grape and nine other aromatic spices and herbs, G’vine’s truly unique blend creates a seductive and opulent experience that you’ll never forget. The use of grape lends this Gin de France a naturally silky texture and heady aroma, setting it apart from grain-based spirits.

Beluga Noble Vodka this unique composition is produced by the malt spirit and purest water of the Siberian artesian wells, which helps to smoothen the taste. These carefully selected natural components pass through a triple filtering system and are left to ‘rest’ for thirty days. Such methods help to neutralise the harsh smell of spirits and to soften the taste.

Rivera Estate is one of the greater estates in Italy. Excelling with their reds, which are not only gorgeous in absolute terms, but also fairly priced, Rivera makes wines that capture the exuberance that Puglia is capable of, while maintaining a gorgeous sense of structure.

We are happy to have Mr Raffaele Augelli, Export Manager of Rivera Winery with us this month to share their fine wines. Mr Augelli holds a MBA in Wine Marketing & Management from Inseec Wine Institute and a WSET Level 3 certification and has been managing the export markets for Rivera Winery, bringing brilliant results in both sales and brand awareness growth in the last three years.

This Christmas, let’s get colourful with gins! Enjoy them at home or get them as gifts!

Puerto de Indias Classic

per bottle

$98

Plenty of body for a more intense and citrus gin. The lime, grapefruit, orange & lemon peel and cilantro give a very fresh touch to the palate.

Puerto de Indias Strawberry $115

With the sweet and wild aroma of strawberry and juniper, this gin offers an authentic flavour to those who like to enjoy different sensations.

Puerto de Indias Black Edition $125

Inspired in the Andalusian spring, this gin incorporates a symphony of floral scents, such as orange, lemon and orange blossom, which awakens the senses.

Obsession Glamorous Gin $125

Infused with mango, red fruits and cinnamon, giving it soft, fresh and delicious fruity notes.

Paper Lantern Gin $105

Crafted from rice and distilled with carefully selected Asian botanicals. Sichuan peppercorns contribute aromatic hints of pine and cloves along with more herbal overtones of plum and lavender. Makhwaen and lemongrass add distinctive high notes of citrus to balance out the spicy base coming from the ginger and galangal.

Hear the world’s greatest Sinatra interpreter sing the coolest Sinatra songs … an unforgettable night of song and storytelling.

“No one should take lightly standing on a stage and trying to BE Frank Sinatra. But Richard Shelton, the man who portrays him, is quite simply phenomenal. He captures the essence of the man perfectly. His voice has exactly the right tone; he has that twinkle in his eye; he has that anger that sometimes flowed out of every Sinatra pore.” Mike Young – BBC, ‘Rat Pack Confidential” -London

NEW TEAM – THE BRITISH CLUB TENNIS SECTION

Dear Members,

I am Matt Rawbone, your new Tennis Convenor.

In this key role within the Tennis Section, I will represent you, the Members, by being actively involved in the department in seizing opportunities and providing you with a memorable experience at the Club.

My family has been Members of the British Club and Tennis Section since 2017, when we moved to Singapore from London. I am a proud family man; my wife and I have three great children who are excited to start the British Club Junior Tennis Program. As well as being a Member of The British Club, we are also members of tennis clubs in UK, Australia, and New Zealand. We have seen what makes clubs great, and that is the active involvement of Members enjoying the facilities and social or competitive events of the Club.

I would like to thank Liza Rowan for her contribution to the Tennis Section and for bringing her passion and energy. She has improved the section from areas within membership and has well-represented Socials, to the competitive Open and Senior Tournaments. She was definitely an asset to the Club.

Fortunately, the Tennis Section is not a one-person team and we are lucky to have some great support to help make our section even better.

Involved are:

• Cyril Baudin – Director of Tennis Coaching

• Iverson Barros – Head Coach

• Caroline Codrington – Junior Tennis

• Clytie Morgan – Competitive Tennis (Open/Seniors)

• Donna Williams – Social Tennis

• Lisa Mowle – Ladies Ladder

• Ben Kiggell – Mens Boxes

• Julian Chessner – Treasurer

From the Club

• Paul Cheong – Sports and Recreation Manager

• Nur Syafiqah (Fiqah) – Sports and Recreation Officer

We are continuously striving to improve your experience and we would be happy to have your feedback. Please reach out to us at tennis@britishclub.org.sg with your thoughts and ideas.

CLUB CHAMPIONSHIP

After last year’s visit to SICC, the annual Club Championship returned to its home, the Serapong course at Sentosa Golf Club. The course was in amazing condition as always, with some friendly flag positions on the par 3’s and a speed of 10 on the greens which is quite slow by Serapong standards. Surprisingly, we heard that the course would undertake a six-month renovation after the Singapore Open in 2020.

27 golfers arrived early in the morning on Friday, 13 September. Some took advantage of the practice facilities while others took the opportunity to start early on the beer! There were a number of prizes up for grabs throughout the morning: ‘3 Nearest the Pins’, ‘Longest Drive’, 2 ‘Team Awards’, ‘Individual Division A and Division B Stableford Competition’, and ‘Individual Stroke Play’. The players fought fiercely as they vied for the top spot in the competitions.

The prize giving ceremony was held at The British Club in the Windsor arms, against a backdrop of an elite group of professional golfers performing under the highest of pressure competing for the Solheim Cup. I hope the performance from the European team will inspire the British Club team during the annual Ryder Cup game against the American Club on 4 October!

Annual Club Championship winners:

Individual Gross:

John Hancock (85 points), runner-up Paul Nikkel (88 points)

Division A Stableford:

John Hancock (37 points on countback), runner-up Nic Merrow Smith

Division B Stableford: Mike Humphrey (43 points), runner-up Paul Nikkel (41 points)

It was great to see several new members joining the event and we hope to see more supporting for the remaining monthly medals, the golf tour to Jakarta, and the end of year event.
