PRESIDENT’S MESSAGE

Dear Members, Welcome to the month of November… another year has all but gone. You would have read in our weekly email that the British Club has won the Leadership in Customer Focus Award at the British Chamber of Commerce’s 15th Annual Business Awards held last month at the Shangri-La Hotel. A big thank you to all of our hard working staff under the guidance of General Manager Sean Boyle and to you for your support. Well done to everyone and thank you for your efforts! On October 13, I was honoured to be invited, along with the Main Committee and former Club presidents, to attend the staff D&D – on the one day of the year that the Club closes. It was a night of fun and celebration. We took the opportunity to award the Employee of the Year and I take the opportunity to congratulate and thank all nominees for that award. For me the highlight of the evening was awarding long service awards to 18 of our loyal staff that between them have given a combined 195 years of service to the Club! Yes we have a great location, engaged Main and Sub Committees and a dedicated and professional GM and supporting team, but it really is our staff that set us apart form everywhere else and I sincerely thank those that have spent so many years focusing on and looking after us, the membership.

Why Buy High and Sell Low? By David Pugh

A common mistake among investors is to buy shares at the top of the market and dump them when the share price falls, or fail to take advantage of this buying opportunity. If we did the opposite our returns would be much, much higher. The thinking behind this buy-high-sell-low does have some reasoning. When a share price is on the up, we want to jump on the bandwagon and profit from its rise. After all, there’s a lot of confidence in a share price on its way up. But if the share price falls, we then panic and offload it. But should not a falling share price be seen as a buying opportunity? After all, if company X’s share price was £2 last week and has now fallen to £1, are we not buying it at half price? If we were in a supermarket, we would surely jump at such a bargain. True value The truth is that investors tend to overreact to bad news and get overexcited about good news, which encourages us to buy high and sell low. It all boils down to what we consider to be the value of that share. One popular measure used to work out the ‘true’ value of a share is the Price/Earnings (P/E) ratio. A company’s P/E ratio calculates how much investors are willing to pay for its earnings. To get this ratio you divide the value of a company’s shares by its earnings (profits essentially). A company with shares worth £100m for example, and earnings of £10m, would thus trade on a P/E of 10. A company with a P/E of 20 is described as expensive relative to a company with a P/E of 10 because an investor is paying twice as much for the same level of earnings. Long-term game Currently the UK stock market trades at a P/E of 15.6. A figure of 10 signifies a low valuation while 20 would be on the high side. So the current UK equity market P/E ratio sits in the middle representing what many would describe as fair value. But as we know, a share’s price is determined by supply and demand, and there are no guarantees the company will continue to deliver the same level of earnings. However, the ‘cheaper’ you buy the stock the greater the potential returns. Based on current valuations, with the possible exception of the USA and Brazil, none of the major global markets look expensive. Chinese equities are trading on an average P/E ratio of 7.1 which would hint at the potential for share prices to rise from their current levels. While some stock markets look attractive now it’s important to remember that investing is a long-term game. The Fry Group has been providing financial advice for over 115 years. MEMBER IN THE SPOTLIGHT

For this issue’s Member in the Spotlight feature, we are pleased to feature Eugene Heng. In August, Eugene was conferred the President’s Award for the Environment at the Istana by President Tony Tan. It is the highest environmental accolade to be given by Singapore to individuals and organizations that have made significant contributions towards environmental and water resource sustainability in Singapore. In this exclusive interview, he shares with us a glimpse of his life and environmental journey. When did you join the Club and reason for doing so… I decided to join the British Club because of two reasons; one being the Club was close to my residence and hence very convenient to use especially with my working hours. I joined in September 1987. Secondly, it was in a wonderful location, on a hilltop and surrounded by nature and I simply like the environment.

How did you come to develop such a passionate interest in environmental cleanliness? I have all along loved our waters. Vacation time was always close to the sea. Working in the Central Business District at Raffles Place brought me even closer to water on a daily basis. When the Singapore River was cleared of all the old bum boats and tongkangs, I could really see the benefit of having a clean and beautiful financial business centre next to our very waterways. This dramatic change from the old Boat Quay days had a profound impact on me and was instrumental in cultivating an even stronger passion to appreciate and care for our waterways.

Please tell us more about the Waterways Watch Society (WWS) which you founded… During my career in banking, I was fortunate to be invited to serve in the GPC Environment (Government Parliamentary Committee). While serving my term with GPC, the idea of an NGO (non-government organization, non-profit) to help monitor and protect our waterways was mooted and I being the youngest member on the committee got arrowed to head this project after the proposal was endorsed by the relevant government agency. Thanks to the strong support of the than head of and chief of NEA, Mr. Tan Gee Paw, I launched the Waterways Watch Society in November 1997 and got it registered under the Charities Act in early 1998. Today, we have IPC status and donations come under the Tax Exempt deduction. While our original society’s goal was to help monitor and protect our waterways, this quickly changed when then-Prime Minister of Singapore Mr. Lee Kuan Yew had this great vision to convert the whole of Kallang basin and Singapore Waterfront (Clifford Pier) into our fifteen reservoir - The Marina Reservoir. This was achieved by building a barrage at the far end, separating the Sea Water and Fresh Water. This changed our role and today we do a lot of education and awareness programs for the schools, corporations and occasionally visiting visitors.

What are some of the challenges you face in this environmental journey? There are three things I learnt from this environmental journey (so far). The first was the complexity and at times mind bogging segregation of ownership within the government agencies. Luckily I was doing this as a volunteer where I could afford to be more patient and not pressured by KPI’s and profit targets. I now consider myself almost an expert in understanding how Singapore’s government agencies are managed and operates. The second challenge learnt was the type of volunteerism we have in Singapore. While I am happy to still have many of my dedicated true volunteers with me, we have also lost many. Turnover can be high and today, of the 380 members we have besides myself, only one other was from the original team. But, I have to say we remain blessed in our work and we currently have THE BRITISH CLUB

MEMBER IN THE SPOTLIGHT

quite a large group of really dedicated and passionate volunteer members. We manage the society as a “family” type style. We have volunteers who attended our programs during school days, signed up as a volunteer when going through JC or University and still involved in our work on weekends after graduation and even after marriage. The third challenge is that relating to finance. As an NGO and even with IPC Status, getting funding is not always easy. Most of our sponsors and donors are individuals or corporations (and sadly, many are MNCs) and although the past two years have seen an increase in donation, there is much room for improvement here. However if we aspire to grow bigger and cast our net to a wider audience, we will obviously need more sustainable financial support. You can learn more about our work by visiting our website at www.wws.org.sg.

Because of the nature of your work, are there any parks in Singapore you would recommend for those who love outdoor activities? If you love outdoor activites, try visiting some of these parks: MyWaterways@Punggol , the island of Ubin, and Bishan Park (upper and lower). Oh, and sometime in 2015, you may also want to include Kallang Riverside Park- watch the news.

Can you tell us three things about Singapore which our Members may not know? Do you know the average person in Singapore users about 151 litres of fresh water each day? Do you know we have 17 reservoirs today in Singapore and the waters in our reservoirs is only one source out of our four national taps? The other three being Imported Water (from the State of Johore), recycled waster water better known as NeWater and Desalination (converted water from sea water). Do you know that while we collect water from over 2/3 of our island today, this is done through our network of drains and canals. The drains in and around the British Club is a collector and feeder of the source of our drinking water from the Marina Reservoir!

When I am not working, you would probably spot me: When not doing my environmental work, you can spot me playing squash at the BC Sports Centre, attending meetings in some of the other volunteer committees I sit on or with my family enjoying a meal outside.

What are your hobbies? While I come to accept that I do not have green fingers, I still love a natural garden. I also like meeting people and sharing with them my work or simply getting to know them. I talk a lot unfortunately.

Please share with us your favourite restaurant/s in Singapore… Food? I love eating. In fact I live to eat and not eat to live. I do love having Japanese, Korean, Chinese, Indian and Italian cuisine regularly (including of course the hawker centres). But today, my favourites are En Dining, Shima and Choo Huey Lim.

Being one of the pioneer Member of the British Club, can you tell us something about the Club which the Members may not know? Do you know that in the early days, the location of our Mountbatten Restaurant and Windsor Arms were switched?

Christine Ong

The British Club Craft Ladies were very happy to host a visit on Tuesday 23rd September from Christine Ong, a celebrated true blue Peranakan Nyonya . She is very passionate about her culture and Peranakan heritage, and was happy to talk with the craft ladies about the origin of the Peranakan culture. She told us of the journey her Great Grandfather took from China down the coast into Singapore; how he met and married her Great Grandmother a local woman, thus creating a Peranakan family, and did not return to his home country. She spoke about the four important aspects of the Peranakan culture:• Marriage – to integrate into the local community and culture; • Language – developed into a mix of Chinese and Malay; • Food – spicy food from the local women was made less spicy for the Chinese men; • Clothes – changing for the ladies from the baju panjang to the kebaya and sarong. Christine discussed the beautiful embroidery and lace work seen on the kebayas, and how the ladies of the house were taught how to sew the intricate patterns. She also showed us how to match the kebaya with a sarong and the beautiful beaded shoes the Peranakan ladies wear. Christine ended the day by organizing a work shop which enabled the craft ladies to try their hand at the bead work. It was a very good day and we thank Christine Ong very much for a very enlightening talk. Christine Ong runs her own business, sourcing and selling items relating to the Peranakan culture; kebayas, sarongs, beaded shoes, porcelain and many other items. She also volunteers as a docent at the Peranakan Museum in Armenian Street. If you are interested in visiting Christine, she can be found most days between 12 noon and 3pm in the lobby of the Concord Hotel on Orchard Road, where she has a stall selling Peranakan items. The British Club Craft Ladies meet every Tuesday from 10am until 3pm in the Treetops Lounge. We are a friendly group and are always happy to see new members, whether or not you have a craft skill; come along and meet us. THE BRITISH CLUB

GOLF SECTION HAPPENINGS By Nic Merrow-Smith Ryder Cup Remains in the Club One of the highlights of our golfing year is the match we play against the American Club where honour and a large glass pot is on the line; the Ryder Cup. This year we had a resounding win, securing a 5 match to 1 victory over the americans, who have vowed to regain the trophy in May 2015. We had a great turnout at Raffles Country Club where the newly renovated greens of the Lake Course suited our slick style of play. Lead by Jonathan Woodward, we revelled in the four ball better ball format winning the singles match and all but one of the four ball matches. Sadly for me I was in the only losing four ball. Ultimately it didn’t matter and for the time being the Ryder Cup is safely behind the bar. Come and join us in May and help us to retain the trophy once again.

Jonathan Woodward, arm wrapped around the trophy, with Manny Fernandez of the American Club

Race to The Sarojin With only three remaining opportunities to score points, the challengers are becoming clearer. John Bussell and Nic Merrow-Smith have carved out a bit of a gap with 62 points a piece. There’s not much change in the order behind (David Kempton 55 points, Charles Peirron 52 points, Colin Allcard 50 points, Steve Settle 43.5 points). It’s still pretty close and as regulars will know, it can all change on the last day especially if the field is large.

August Medal

September Medal The September Medal was played on the 26th, Sunday, over the causeway at Horizon Hills Golf and Country Club. A pattern is emerging here with three father and son pairs joining us for the early morning round. With the course shrouded in mist, we teed off to discover water hazards on almost every hole and undulating “tour speed” greens. Paul Nikkel managed his game the best securing two birdies and never once three putting on very fast greens to win with 37 points. Nic Merrow-Smith secured the runner up spot with John Bussell in third place. Paul Nikkel’s huge drive up the narrow 16th secured the longest drive with nearest the pins awards going to Graeme Jacombs and Nic Merrow-Smith. Highlight of our round was seeing all four of our flight make the par 3 island green with our tee shots.

Southlinks; before the rain

The August Medal took place in Batam during our weekend stay-n-play where we put up at the Crown Vista Hotel. Although we got caught in a huge squall on the 2nd hole at Southlinks, the round was completed in near perfect conditions. We had an interesting dinner on the promenade where deep fried chicken didn’t look anything like chicken and stir fried beef didn’t look anything like beef. There was no shortage of vegetables or cold bottled beer so we were suitably refreshed and ready to tackle Inda Puri the following morning. Sunday saw a boost in numbers and we actually had three father and son pairs on the course at Indah Puri. As the medal was played over two days, players could put forward their better score. John Bussell played solidly on Sunday scoring 40 points, fending off Richard Holloway with 38 points. The good scoring at Indah Puri reflected better conditions and the excellent caddies, many of whom play off single figures. THE BRITISH CLUB

Darren Moore, BC Tennis Director since September 2014

I was very fortunate to grow up on the Northern Beaches of Sydney, Australia. My family home was located literally 100 metres from the tennis courts, my mother & father played and when I was about 3 years old I would swing the racquet and try to hit the ball against the wall. After they played I would run on the court and want to play with them. From the age of 5 I started basic tennis lessons and by the time I was thirteen I was training 5 mornings per week before school (6.00am – 8.00am) and 5 evenings per week 4.30pm – 7.30pm with matches, competitions and weekends and tournaments in the school holidays. As a junior I competed on a National Level and by the time I finished school I chose to study rather than turn professional (something I am glad I did because I still have the same passion for the sport I had as a teenager now at the age of 38). Tennis Coaching Qualifications: Tennis Australia Fully Qualified Club Professional Qualification, however I have been very fortunate to work with some of Australia’s best players and best coaches such as • Sandon Stolle, US Open Doubles Champion and Australian Davis Cup Player. Sandon and myself taught the National & State Program together and have travelled throughout Asia conducting coach education and high performance camps.

I am a level 2 Tennis Australia qualified professional who have been coaching for 14 years. I have coached in many countries including Germany, Spain, Hong Kong, and Australia and possess a diploma in Sport and Remedial massage. I am a certified physical trainer with Fitness Australia and have worked alongside Darren at the State Tennis Centre which hosted the 2000 Olympics. I am passionate about the game of tennis and always working towards achieving the best of one’s ability.

Baudin Cyril I started playing tennis at the tender age of 4 and have been in the French Federation with the French team till I turned 18 years old. I had a top ranking of 617 in the world when I was part of the ATP tour and have played against Andy Murray, Jo Wilfred, Richard Gasquet, and many more. Before joining BC, I was the head coach at a French club located in Southern France. Tennis is my passion and I am looking forward to share this passion with BC members.

Sam Esposito My name is Sam Esposito, an Australian, have been part of The British Club for a year. I am a qualified Club Professional Coach and have been coaching for the past 12years working with adults, kids and professional players.

• Wally Masur, former top 20 singles and doubles player, David Cup player & coach, Tennis Australia National Coach and Fox Sports Grand Slam Commentator • Ben Pyne, II consider to be Australia’s best technical. I started coaching when I was 14 (1990) at my local tennis club in Sydney to help my coach with the juniors. After a break from tennis to study and gain experience in a different industry I found myself drawn back to tennis, I returned to coaching approximately 15 years ago and for the past 10 years I worked for the governing body back in NSW / Australia as Athlete Development Manager for Tennis New South Wales as well as Head Coach of the Asia Pacific Tennis Institute and a Coach Education Lecturer for Tennis Australia. I have coached in Australia, Germany, China, and Malaysia. In addition I have been fortunate enough as taking National Teams to Thailand, Slovenia, New Zealand, Singapore, Fijii & New Caledonia. Growing up 2 minutes from the beach meant if I was not on the tennis court I was in the water. Due to the water I would have to say Sentosa Island is my favourite place in Singapore. This may change as I see more of Singapore. I am still exploring and sampling the local cuisine in Singapore.

A SEASON IN REVUE**

Random musings from an entirely random mind. By David Kempton Batting Most runs: David Hosking – 250 Mind he has batted more times than anybody else and at the top of the order. If he could stop attempting to hook everything in the first over would score a lot more as well. Honourable mention: Gaurav Lakhanpal – 215 Another top-order batsman (strange that). Only one horrendous innings (when he couldn’t hit the ball and couldn’t hit it off the square when he did) for us to take the mickey over (so far). Most Home Runs per Plate Appearance***: David Bennett – 5 Not who we expected......

“Pie-Boy: as an opening bowler he makes a great treasurer”

As we reach the time of the year when the Veterans League fixtures take over, this seems an appropriate juncture to look back on the social season which has gone before. After the Vets League there will be a few more social games for players to rescue or more likely confirm their reputations but the majority have already been played.

Least Impressive Innings: Todd Buck – 4 n.o. from 31 deliveries. Despite a valiant attempt from Gaurav with a truly terrible knock earlier in the season, Todd snatches away the prize in our last fixture against UWC Teachers. Whether he was just trying to improve the confidence of Biggers or had genuinely forgotten which end of the bat to hold this was an innings of staggering ineptitude. It’s a good job we had plenty of time and wickets to spare........ Sundries (Australian term for “Extras”) Best newcomer: Richard Wall A combination of enthusiastic fielding and aggressive batting marks this man out for great things. Or a heart attack. A reduction in pies and waistline and an increase in fitness from the early season has helped. The question is: How many wides will the BC bowl in their five Vets League matches? Honourable mention: Paul Twine – 14 An improved economy rate down to 5 but just doesn’t have the same knack for getting wickets with bad balls as Benno has. SQuash:

SQUASH SAMURAI By The Boaster At the end of August the BC squash section, already an international bunch themselves, expanded their geographical and cultural horizons further when they hosted a Japanese touring side. Our guests ranged in age from their 20s to 50s and featured a 57 year old who had been Japanese national champion fourteen times in his youth and was, needless to say, still a very good player. Most of us had 2 or 3 matches - an impressive effort for the BC but even more so for the guests who had only flown in that afternoon and had training planned for the next morning and a match every night for the next 4 nights! The results on the night were mostly in our favour but were secondary to a great night of social squash. More international squash, of sorts, followed in September when we took on the American Club in the annual “Ryder Cup” fixture. 18 matches were played in total – doubles & singles – and with everyone else back in the clubhouse (or rather screaming from behind the back wall) Jamie Salamon proved to be the hero of the hour, coming back from 0-2 down to halve the last match 2-2 and make the final score match score 9-9 which was enough for the BC to retain the trophy. As well as international adventures, the BC team has been playing weekly in the interclub Cosmo League. We have 2 wins out of 5 so far (against Tanglin and the Americans) and sit in the middle of the league table, ready for our second-half surge. Watch for news of that next month . . . .
