PRESIDENT’S MESSAGE
Dear Members, The summer break is over and for those that took a holiday break, I hope you are adjusting well to normality.
MAIN COMMITTEE Steve Settle President
The Club has planned a month of fun activities for Members to take a break from their routine. On Saturday 4th October we have the Peranakan Night. This special night replaces the annual Red, White, and Blue Ball; do book early and use this opportunity to learn more about this unique Asian culture. At the end of the month on Sunday, 26 October, the Club is bringing back the popular Inventive Puppetry show. You will get to see the creative puppet-making process and fascinating puppetry creations. More upcoming events and details can be found in the following pages.
Shaun Matheson
At our September Member Connect Night, we were honoured to hand over cheques of $38,000 to each of our Club charities - the Gurkha Welfare Trust and Riding for the Disabled. A big thank you to all Members who contributed towards this collection through the various events held at the Club this year, in particular through the auctions and events at the Best of British celebrations in June. The donations will certainly benefit these deserving organisations and help them continue the extremely good work that they do.
Richard Shaw
At the Club, the GM and his team are always on the look out for the best deals in town for Members. You may have noticed in the weekly e-newsletters, there have been an increasing number of promotions where Members can purchase exclusively priced tickets at various shows as well as retailers in the city. Do keep a look out for these e-newsletters and in our website for the latest Members benefits. To show appreciation to our employees, the Club will organise an Employee Dinner & Dance on Monday, 13 October. Please note that the Club will close for the day and will resume operations on Tuesday, 14 October. We wish them a wonderful, enjoyable and evening which is well deserved. On Thursday, 27 November we will be holding our Annual General Meeting. All Members with voting rights are invited to attend and be a part of the decision making process for the Club. Active Member participation is vital for the Club and if you have served as a Member of a sub-committee for at least a year, and would like to consider standing for election to the Main Committee in November, please be sure to speak to your respective Chairpersons for more information. And last but not least, my best wishes for a Selamat Hari Raya Haji and Happy Deepavali. STEVE SETTLE President

Hard Working Sports Convenors!
T h e a m a z i n g g ro w t h i n m a n y o f t h e S p o r t s S e c t i o n s witnessed over the last 18 months has been a joy to see but has often come at quite a sacrifice to the Sports Section “Convenors”! These people, all of whom are volunteers and Members of the British Club, work endless hours attending meetings, Members Connect Nights, answer emails, make strategic suggestions and decisions, write reports, run Committees and, best of all, get to attend the monthly Sports Committee Meeting on a Saturday morning! Why are these Convenors so dedicated to their Sports S ecti on I have of te n a s k e d m ys e lf . O ne v e ry a c t iv e sporting Convenor responded with: “We want to make sure we maximise our precious time at the Club, indulging in our favourite sport in a relaxed but often competitive arena and then unwinding with friends, family and, when appropriate, the opposition”! Of course, that would not happen without a lot of organisation within the Club as well as maintaining healthy relationships with external Clubs for competition as regularly seen within the Cricket, Football, Squash and Tennis Sections.
Great to see the Cricket Section thriving again under the hard working “Convenorship” of Paul Twine; so many extra fixtures and new members have been added from his energetic and leading from the front style. Karo Debeul, Scuba Diving Convenor, is also doing a great job and now the number of members who go on dives is growing substantially; sign up early! The Tennis Section will certainly miss the dedication and hard work of Fiona Barton when she leaves later this year; the Section is the biggest by numbers and probably the busiest too. Fiona, along with joint-Convenor Joel Kruger, has assembled a fine Tennis Committee who make sure the Section runs smoothly, fairly and maximising the coaches with plenty of focus on the rising number of very good 8-16 year old players.
The Golf Section, under new leadership of Nic MerrowSmith, has turned to social media to keep their Section informed and motivated with great photos of members in action on their dedicated Facebook page as well as in the monthly magazine; keep them coming. Squash Convenor, Craig Telmer is doing an excellent job at keeping a The Swimming Section continues to see on-going demand growing band of demanding players competitive and and with that in mind we are delighted to be able to satisfied; the new surface of the courts look superb and share the Convenor responsibilities amongst 3 members much commented on by visiting teams. who will make sure swimming lessons, training and the ever busy Masters Section all run smoothly with optimal Of course, none of the Sports Sections would be working but safe numbers using both the main pool and wonderful properly without the help, encouragement and leadership new training pool. of the hard working Sports Management team and fast responding Scores F&B team to satisfy our hunger and The Football Section is also grasping the idea of joint thirst! Expats face another tax grab from UK government By David Pugh
Expats potentially face another tax raid on their income with the UK government unveiling plans to scrap personal allowances for non-residents. Chancellor George Osborne is pushing ahead with the measure to force British expats to pay tax on all their UK income. Currently non-resident Brits are entitled to offset income earned in the UK against the £10,000 personal allowance that all tax-payers enjoy. Those with property in the UK that rent them out while living abroad, are in the firing line. Osborne first unveiled plans to take away the generous tax allowance in the March budget and the Treasury has now released its proposals in a consultation paper. This signals the government’s strong intentions to go through with its plans, which it says will bring it in line with the US, Canada and the majority of the European Union. It will affect anyone with a “strong economic connection” to Britain, and is likely to ensnare up to 400,000 expats who may now need to rethink their retirement plans as a result. The change could cut a couple’s income by up to £4,000 a year which is a big blow to anyone’s finances. There is less of an issue for the one million-plus British retirees living overseas with pension income as many are either UK residents for tax purposes, as they spend at least half the year in Britain, or because most State or private pensions are only taxable in the country of residence. One glimmer of hope is that some expats will be still able to claim tax relief from their country of residence. However, if they live in a low-tax jurisdiction (for example, Hong Kong, Dubai or Singapore) they could end up paying more tax overall. As expected the Treasury said no decision has been finalised yet but scrapping the personal allowance would fit in with its general plans to clamp-down on the finances of expats. From next April, expats who own property in the UK will be liable for capital gains tax (CGT). As a result, expats will have to pay tax on any increase in value to their UK property from 2015 onwards. This is making UK property purchases a less attractive investment for non-residents. With so many changes happening or in the pipeline it’s essential for any expat to seek financial advice to clarify their own personal tax position and before making any big investment, such as buying UK property or taking out a pension. The Fry Group has been providing financial advice for over 115 years. We enjoy helping clients achieve the peace of mind that comes from knowing their wealth is managed wisely. MEMBER IN THE SPOTLIGHT
For this issue’s Member in the Spotlight feature, we are pleased to feature Robert Williams. In this exclusive interview, he shares with us a glimpse of his life in Singapore. A glimpse of my professional life... Being a frequent business traveler, any tips on how to make the traveling more comfortable for yourself? I can’t stress enough the importance of drinking LOTS of water when flying. Staying hydrated is key to feeling fresh as the air is drier while flying. I also recommend using a good moisturiser and one of those small mineral water sprays for your face. British Airways offers passengers such incredible food and wine choices onboard and also in the lounges which are there to be enjoyed but my tip is to not overindulge. Enjoy the wine but remember to have some water too. I am attracted to the British Club and chose to be a Diamond Sponsor for the Best of British because... The club is a real oasis in the middle of what is a truly busy metropolis these days. It’s nice to feel a bit more remote, hear the birds sing and enjoy the amazing views from the club. I also like the choice of great restaurants and bars and the fact that I can add it all to my account having only to settle the bill once a month. Best of British is truly a fantastic showcase in the calendar for all that is great about Britain. With British Airways having been voted the Consumer Superbrand of 2014 and Terminal 5, our award-winning, state-of-the-art home at London Heathrow, named the World’s Best Terminal in 2014 for the third time in a row, this event is a perfect fit for us.
A glimpse of my personal life... When I am not working, you would probably spot me at... One of the great bars and restaurants along Robertson Quay or at my dance school where I have ballroom lessons twice a week. My favourite restaurant in Singapore.. Chop Suey in Dempsey, a very stylish restaurant with a wonderful menu. The Sunday roast at Level 33 is also my latest find. It’s amazing to go to the CBD on a Sunday and find it so quiet and laid back. There is no other place in Singapore that makes a roast as close to what you would find at home. My favourite hunt around my neighbourhood… Wine Connection at Robertson Quay which is at the bottom of my road has the best selection of wine in Singapore and with the best prices. It stops me from needing a wine fridge at home as I can just pop here anytime I need a bottle! My favourite holiday destinations include... Argentina would be my favourite long-haul destination but you can’t beat a villa in Greece or a weekend in Paris. All of these are easily accessible on the British Airways network from here. We offer a twice-daily service from Singapore to London and all our flights land at Terminal 5 offering our customers here a seamless connection to our network across Europe and the US. My hobbies... As mentioned above, I enjoy ballroom dancing and recently took my first exams - it’s becoming more of a serious hobby than I thought it would. I also love to bake and get huge pleasure from having baked a cake from scratch rather than just buying from the shops. Something about Singapore that our Members may not know… British Airways has been flying to Singapore for over 80 years now providing a strong link between here and London and acts as our stopover destination on our ‘kangaroo route’ – we offer a daily flight from Singapore to Sydney. Singapore has witnessed numerous pioneering developments in aviation and has historically been integral to British Airways’ network. It was first served by the revolutionary Imperial Airways C Class flying boat and was also served by the supersonic Concorde in the 70s. The flight was operated via Bahrain and the whole journey just took nine hours. From October 29, 2014, we will be introducing the A380 to the Singapore to London route enabling us to offer our latest product to our customers here.

Sileni Estate is a major vineyard and winery development in Hawke’s Bay, New Zealand’s oldest established vineyard area. They celebrated good wine, good food, and good company. The estate boasts a state of the art winery designed to crush over 1,500 tonnes of grapes. Their Winemaking Team have honed their winemaking skills in wineries around the world and have strived to maintain high standards in environmentally sustainable viticulture and winemaking practices. They produce hand crafted wines that reflect the unique characteristics of the vineyards. More than just a winery, Sileni Estate is an Epicurean Centre and a gourmet foodstore, showcasing the finest Hawke’s Bay, New Zealand’s, and international products. WINE TASTING BY THE POOL Bass River Wine Tasting
Sunday, 12 October • 11.00am to 2.00pm
Bass River is part of South Gippsland wine region which is best known for its fine, cool climate Pinot Noir and Chardonnay with a growing popularity for Pinot Gris. Bass River wines are made exclusively from grapes grown on the property, hence the label “Estate grown and produced”. Bass River is a boutique winery that resembles a small domain in South Gippsland – in size, approach, passion and very often in the glass. The vineyard is managed by the Butera family, who place heavy emphasis on producing small quantities of premium wines grown only from the estate vineyard, expressing terroir and organic principles to handcraft distinctive regional wines. We are happy to have Frank Butera, winemaker and owner of Bass River with us to share with us their wines.
KarriBindi Wine Tasting Saturday, 18 October • 6.00pm to 9.00pm KarriBindi is a family owned and operated vineyard with 32 hectares of grapes under vine. The winery is located in Karridale, a premium growing area in the southern part of Margaret River, which is close to Cape Leeuwin, the most south westerly point in Australia. James Halliday, Australia’s eminent wine critic, rated the winery 4 stars. KarriBindi produced wines including the Semillon Sauvignon Blanc and Shiraz were given 93 and 90 points respectively. We are happy to have Kris Wealand, the General Manager of KarriBindi with us this October to share with us their wines.

SQuash:
THE END OF AN ERA By The Boaster
The squash section is a bit like an airport hall; one minute there are scenes of joy as we welcome new-comers who add to the vibrancy and camaraderie of our club-within-a-club, and the next there are scenes of sadness when, inevitably, we see our brothers leave again. It seems that recently we have lost a number of great players and great characters from our fold, with arguably the most painful loss being that of our former convenor, Jan du Preez. With his actual leaving date hanging out there ominously like a dark cloud since May, we were worried he might end up skulking off quietly in the middle of our holiday season. But with D-Day finally coming on Saturday, 16 August, a good crowd was around to give him a fitting farewell. Having played every sport you care to mention throughout his life, squash has been his major passion and in an emotional farewell speech to the section, he confessed that he would have left for another job earlier last year had it not been for his love of squash and the section he had become such a key part of. During the proceedings, Andrew Vine highlighted Jan’s introduction, during his time as Convenor, of the annual awards for Most Competitive, Most Improved and Good Fellowship – an institution we will certainly continue. Andrew added that the section had another award of its own to bestow upon Jan. He was presented with the British Club Squash Section Friend for Life award, in the shape of a 3D engraved photo of Jan - a rare moment of him actually smiling captured for eternity in crystal. Present convenor Craig Telmer, Club President Steve Settle and a host of sweaty squash friends shared their heart-felt gratitude for Jan’s enormous contribution to the section and had a drink (or two) in his honour. So, to Jan and Odile, we wish you all the best as you move to England. Our only advice is to get a really big house, because you never know when the boys will announce their squash tour to Berkshire! This year’s Cosmo League – a competitive but very social competition between the BC, American Club, Singapore Cricket Club, Tanglin Club, Dutch Club, Serangoon Gardens Country Club & Singapore Island Country Club - kicked off in late August and will run through to December with home matches at the BC on Monday nights. Watch out for the team giving their all on the courts and rehydrating hard in Scores afterwards, and watch this space for match reports and news of the BC’s charge to the title (maybe).

Club Championship
Serapong Course, Sentosa, 24 October The British Club’s Annual Golf Championship will take place on the world class Serapong Course later this month. You have more chance at winning something on the day than Adam Scott (three times winner of the Barclays Singapore Open), so please come along and enjoy yourself for day. We can confirm a preferential rate of $220 for section members and $235 for non section members and guests inclusive of green fee and buggy. The course as always, is in pristine condition. Race to The Sarojin
June Medal
The race is heating up. Participation has been erratic this year and although good in the early part of the year, attendance has tailed off as travel, holidays and rotation have taken their toll. With the end of the year in sight, our stalwarts continue to battle for top honours and the coveted prize; 5 nights in a wonderful suite for two people (good if there’s a tie) at The Sarojin in Khoa Lak. In all seriousness, after leaving the missus at home for days on end to be on the golf course, win or not, why not take her away on a romantic holiday to The Sarojin anyway? Here are the standings after Round 7 played at the end of July. Points obtained from your best seven finishes count towards the Order of Merit, so I encourage you all to “max out” on your participation in our monthly medals; it’s not too late to mount a late charge. THE BRITISH CLUB
The 4th at Sembawang Country Club, 445m, Par 5
The June Medal took place at Sembawang Country Club, on Friday, 27 June. This was one of the smaller turn-outs of the year with seven of us taking to the greens. The condition of the course remains very good and with plenty of elevation, blind shots and water around the turn, it can be quite deceptive. On this occasion the course failed to get the better of anyone and all seven players came back with reasonable scores. Only five points separated the winner of wooden spoon from the winner of the medal. Third in the medal-standings on 34 stableford points was Oliver Stoffell with John Bussell taking second place having been bumped on count back. Winner of the medal with an identical score of 35 points was Gary Fawcett. Gary also claimed one of the nearest pin prizes with the other going to Charles Peirron. Winner of the longest drive on this occasion was Nic Merrow-Smith. The game was followed by a pleasant lunch at the terrace, a couple of beers and excuses from the Convener for not having the prizes on hand.

August Social - Urban Fairways Urban Fairways continue to give us great support and access to their facilities at no cost on a regular basis. A shame it’s not a bit better supported, so come on guys, where else can you enjoy a 3 hour round of golf in Singapore, in the airconditioning, and with a cool beer between shots? For the record, three of us re-lived the US Open and played Pinehurst No. 2. Awesome.
ISCGT Third Leg
The island 12th green, (photobombed by John Bussell), with the 3 tee shots of Colin Allcard, John Bowhay and Nic Merrow-Smith resting on the green.
The July Medal was to be played on the refurbish Lake Course at Raffles Country Club (RCC), but instead we took advantage of the pre-renovation rates and set about digging up the fairways of the old Palm Course. Surprisingly the Palm was very playable and we had a great afternoon. Unlike the June Medal, many of us struggled with the longer course and the challenges of RCC; island greens, island fairways and island tees, to name just three. Thankfully we had Steve Settle with us to show us how it should be done, returning with a commendable 33 points to take first place. Honourable mention must go to Colin Allcard who not only managed to pip Gary Cunning for second spot, but also stole in to snatch a nearest the pin prize from him. Steve Settle won the second nearest the pin prize and longest drive went to Nic Merrow-Smith for the second month in a row.
The Inter-Social Club Golf Tournament 3rd Leg was held at Warren Golf Club on 21 August. There are honours to be won across three divisions where the three best scores count towards your team total. It goes without saying that if you only field one or two players in a division, you are not going to score very highly. Thankfully, the competition although fierce, is not the only reason to participate. It’s a great social event and a chance to enjoy golf the Singapore way; well attended, well sponsored and with a dinner and (quite) a few drinks after the game. Many thanks to Team ABC (American and British Club) and to the following British Club members for their participation; Paul Nickel, Mike Humphrey and Nic Merrow-Smith (Div. B) and Charles Pierron (Div. C). We are considering incentives to encourage more participation and thus strengthen our team for the 4th and last leg in November. Ladies are of course welcome.
In addition to our regular prizes, we had a putter to give away courtesy of Asia Pacific Golf Group (APGG) who publish Asian Golf magazine. The putter was won by Oliver Stoffell by quite a margin. Well if you can’t sink your putts, what better way to end the day than with a new putter? Another who struggled on the day was John Bowhay who nevertheless received a hearty welcome. Jet-lagged and joining us for the first time, John learnt that the ball behaves differently out here in the tropics. It was a spanking hot afternoon, so naturally the game was followed by an ice-cold beer or two on the terrace overlooking the lake. Not a flat, factory or highway in sight. Where else (apart from the British Club of course) can you enjoy such a view in Singapore? Mixed bag; Tony Chia (SRC), Patrick Lim (SGCC), Johnny Tan (CSC), Nic Merrow-Smith (ABC)
JCC Monday Night Men’s League The league returned in September and will conclude in a Grand Final on 8 December. Good luck to the British Club Team of Abhijit Patwardhan (Captain), Steve Settle, Gary Cunning, Paul Nickel, Andrew Affleck, Charles Peirron, Oliver Stoffell and Deke Pedrick.
Oliver’s prize courtesy of APGG, a milled Mizuno putter worth $320. We hope it helps. SINGAPORE’S HILLTOP RETREAT

Time of Welcomes and Farewells By Nousheen Jalal
Saying goodbye to Fiona fun, funny frothy? feisty, fearsome fiona Tennis-stalwart LTS, WITs Masters, Open Heathered and Marked By partnership peerless Paired perfection? Guardian of rules, decorum, quorum Woe betide breaker of any meet the lady’s Wrath! (sweetened always by righteous laugh)
When Autumn comes, Members start to greet new Members around the Club as if they were old friends. New faces at the weekly tennis socials have started to become regulars. New Members have softened the sting of the goodbyes we bade to friends who departed Singapore earlier in the summer. If you have recently become active in the tennis scene at the British Club, we hope you have already had a chance to join in the on-court fun at the Ladies’ Social tennis on Monday mornings, Men’s Social tennis on Monday evenings, or Mixed Social tennis on Friday nights. Posters around the Club would have alerted to you that there are plenty of tennis-centred activities for both adults and youngsters of all ages – from lessons to competition. The competitive ones among us might have already joined a ladies’ British Club team in the WITS league, or even the Club’s ladies’ or men’s team in the STA league; or perhaps your child is playing in a Club team in JTTL. For more information on tennis activities, please email sports@britishclub.org.sg or contact Wan Lay Chi from the Sports & Recreation department at 64101173. Tennis activities are managed by the Sports and Recreation team at the Club. Darren Moore joined as the Tennis Director in September and oversees all tennis coaching for players of all levels, including training support to junior and ladies’ teams that represent the British Club. The Tennis Section committee is made up of Club Members who volunteer their time to assist the Club with Member outreach programme and involvement for both social and competitive tennis.

The Tennis section’s engagement with Club Members would not be as frequent and strong as it is without the commitment of one particular committee Member, Fiona Barton. Nelly’s poem captures the passion with which Fiona embraced her role as Ladies’ Tennis Convenor at the British Club for the past 5 years. There are not enough words to acknowledge and thank Fiona for her dedication to making tennis accessible and enjoyable for more British Club Members and their children. Before taking the Convenor role, she volunteered a few years as WITS Coordinator for the Club and served as WITS President in 2002-2004.
SPORT & FITNESS Fiona and her husband Mark have been part of the British Club tennis community for more than a decade. They have decided to return to the UK to enjoy more time with their family and play tennis at cooler damper climates. We are bidding them farewell this month.

On behalf of the all Tennis Section Members and the Committee, Fiona, thank you for your enthusiasm, the foresight to plan ahead always, and the attention to details in matters relevant. You will be sorely missed on the courts, the curry buffets, and the annual knees-ups. In typical Fiona Barton style, she has tirelessly cajoled members to volunteer for key Committee activities in the past year. By the time you read this article, I expect that new Ladies’ Convenor will have been identified and familiar with her role. In the meantime, let’s welcome Julie Burridge who recently volunteered to be WITS Coordinator for the British Club. Alongside her passion for coaching horses, Julie is finding time to liaise with the league to support continued participation in WITS for British Club ladies’ teams. If you want to know more about joining a British Club team to play in the WITS league, please contact Julie via sports@britishclub.org.sg. The Tennis Section welcomes all British Club Members to join the section to participate in social as well as competitive Club tennis, and make new friends on and off court through our social activities. To find out more, please contact any of the Darren Moore or any of the Tennis Committee members.
