Member in the Spotlight For this issue’s Member in the Spotlight feature, we are pleased to feature Member, Drena Allcard. Drena is the Chairman of the British Association. The British Association was set up in April 1956 and was instrumental in the development of the Gleneagles Hospital and the Tanglin School, and in 1986 with the foundation and inauguration of the British Club.
What brought you to Singapore and The British Association? Colin and I arrived here a little over two and a half years ago. Two of our children are working in Singapore and we saw it as an opportunity to share some quality time with them, particularly the two grandchildren. We were also keen to explore the Far East and Singapore is the perfect hub. I joined the British Association three months after arriving in Singapore. Some two months later I saw an advertisement for a new Chairman in the Beam magazine. I had been President of an international organisation for women in the UK and thought I might be able to help out. Following the AGM four months later, I began my new role! We had been expats for over half our married life during Colin’s career with Shell, living in Dubai in the 70’s, Malawi, Dubai again some 10 years later, Houston, New York and Ethiopia.
Being an expat living in Singapore, what will be your favourite local food and food haunts? Having a Singaporean daughter-in-law provides on-hand advice for local food and we are both game for trying oriental fare in China Town, Little India and various hawker centres, but one of Colin’s favourites is ‘Pepper Crab’ on the East Coast.
The British Association has been a long term supporter of the Club and still is (which we are greatly thankful for), what do you love most about the Club? The history of the relationship between the British Club and the BA is important to me. I aspire to nurture and maintain that partnership given the history, and since both organisations represent the British Community in our host country. If we can help one another and primarily our members – to our mutual benefit, long may it continue!
What is the event you love to attend most at the Club? I love the ‘smiley happy people’ working at the Club and the way we are made to feel welcome as soon as we step inside. It is therefore, a wonderful venue for our Newcomers Coffee mornings.
The favourite holiday destination in the region will be… During the past two years we have travelled to several locations in the region, (and to Australia last Christmas) the most poignant being a recent trip to Cambodia. However, my favourites (so far) are Pangkor Laut in Malaysia and Bali, both ideal chill-out locations!

ST DAVID’S WELSH SOCIETY OF SINGAPORE ANNUAL BALL 2015 We are delighted to be this year’s venue of choice for the St David’s Welsh Society of Singapore’s annual ball. The event kick-started with a Welsh harpist reception at 7pm. Members thoroughly enjoyed themselves with the activities lined-up that night, especially the ‘Tom Jones’ tribute act by Ian Anthony. The guests were treated to a 5-course gourmet dinner created specially by The British Club’s very own Executive Chef Sunny Sia. A good night was had by all. Hi Kelly, On behalf of all of us in the St David’s Society I would like to say a huge thank you for a fantastic evening on Saturday. The event was such a success and that wouldn’t have been possible without all the hard work and dedication from yourself and all the British Club team. Everybody had a brilliant time and i’m sure they’ll be talking about it for a long while. The venue looked stunning, the food was delicious and flawless service with a smile! Thanks once again. Best wishes, Kylie hughes

General Election 2015 – Tax Implications? By Martin Rimmer
George Osborne delivered his final Budget of this Parliament on 18 March 2015, but what lies next? Parliament will be dissolved on 30 March 2015, and only then will the election campaign really get underway giving us a proper steer on the policies each of the major Parties will be promoting. Our focus, of course, is on the financial aspects of each campaign, and most importantly how the tax policies of the Parties may affect you. The Conservatives have committed to generating a budget surplus in the next Parliament, promising to do so without tax increases which, without looking at how they may balance the books, makes good reading for the UK tax payer. The Liberal Democrats have also pledged to balance the books but they will be raising 20% of the required funds through tax increases. The Labour Party have hinted that in order to bring the deficit back into line, they will be raising taxes. In terms of headlines the key announcements so far have been: CONSERVATIVES – PARTY POLICY ON TAX • •
Increase the personal allowance to £12,500 Increase the basic rate band to £50,000
LIBERAL DEMOCRATS – PARTY POLICY ON TAX • • • • •
Increase personal allowance to £11,000 in the first year of the new Parliament, and gradually increase to £12,500 A rise in the tax on dividends for additional rate tax payers A cut in the pension tax relief lifetime allowance to £1,000,000 Raising the CGT rate from 28% to 35% for higher rate taxpayers Cutting the CGT annual allowance from £11,000 to £2,500
LABOUR – PARTY POLICY ON TAX • • •
A return of the 50% rate for additional rate tax payers Reintroduction of the 10% starting rate of income tax A cessation of higher rate income tax relief on pension contributions
UKIP – PARTY POLICY ON TAX • •
Introduction of a new 35% rate of income tax for some people currently paying at 40% A proposal to scrap inheritance tax

FRENCH
WINE & GOURMET DINNER Friday, 24 April 2015 • 7.30pm
$98.00+ Member • $108.00+ Guest No other country in the world produces a larger volume of quality wines than France, and no other country produces it in such diversity from wine regions of Bordeaux, Burgundy, Rhône Valley, Champagne, Loire Valley and Alsace. France was the first country to legislate a system to codify viticultural and horticultural practices and protect geographical names of origin. Today, the country has over 300 different appellations d’origine contrôlee (AOC). Though not a guarantee of top quality, the AOC designation is a considerable help to the consumer in determining the range and styles of taste. Of the more than 2 million acres of vineyard in France, half are dedicated to wine authorized as AOC. We have divided this section by major wine regions: Champagne, Burgundy, Rhône and Alsace. Each introduction will look at the particular region in depth and describe its climate, soils and grape varieties as well as other factors that combine to shape its differing styles of wine. We are happy to have Mr Sanjay Nair with us to share with us his wines. Sanjay is a Certified Sommelier (First Sommelier Accreditation in Asia) by the Court of Master Sommeliers. He is also Certified Specialists of various organisations such as Wine & Spirits Education Trust (WSET, UK), Society of Wine Educators, Spanish Wine Academy, A+ Australian Wine School and last but not least, French Wine Society.

We give our students roots and wings.
At GESS, we appreciate the importance of learning your mother tongue and understand that it can be especially hard for children living overseas. That’s why our European Section, where English is the language of instruction, offers a comprehensive range of native language courses designed to help students learn their home language despite the distance. So whether you’re from Holland, Denmark or Germany, your children can study their native tongue at school. GESS is a not-for-profit, international school founded on European traditions, educating children from 18 months to 18 years. We are an accredited IB World School, as well as an Excellent German School Abroad.

Avoid Common Fitness Pitfalls
By Aaron Tay
Fitness Instructor (SSC), Strength & Conditioning Coach (ASCA), Sports Nutrition Specialist (ISSN), Personal Trainer (NSCF)
While exercising isn’t complicated, it’s very easy to make mistakes. Often times the mistakes are made because of lack of proper technique training or simply due to rushing to get the workout completed. Regardless of the reason for the mistakes, they can lead to injuries or at the very least be counterproductive to your fitness goals. Of course it’s important to know specifically what to do to be successful at meeting your health and fitness goals but it is also crucial to understand what not to do. So take note of the following common mistakes and how to avoid them. Below are some tips that will help ensure your workout time is effective and help prevent injuries. Many new exercisers try to lose weight or tone up too quickly, by trying exercise programs that are too difficult for their fitness level. Be sure to start with an exercise plan that takes your current fitness regime (or lack of) into account. Despite what many advertisers would like you to believe, it’s unrealistic to think you can lose 30 pounds in 30 days or that you can have Hollywood abs simply by doing 10 minutes of crunches a day. It’s good to set goals but be sure they aren’t too aggressive and realize it’s okay to periodically re-define them. Breathing is an involuntary bodily function; something that most individuals tend to ignore. But, breathing correctly during fitness sessions is very important. Incorrect breathing can lead to lack of oxygen and even faintness. When working out ensure that you don’t breathe too shallowly and try to breathe through the nose and out the mouth. Drinking enough water on a daily basis is important. When you exercise you need to consume even more water. You should drink 16 ounces for every hour of exercise you complete. Plus you should try to consume 1-2 cups of water about 30 minutes before you begin working out.
Not eating enough can be as detrimental as eating too much. When the body is not fed consistently, it goes into a starvation mode. Five to six smaller meals evenly spaced throughout the day helps keep the metabolism running smoothly. Just be sure to control portion size. Just showing up at the gym is not going to help you get more fit. Socializing while leaning on a weight machine won’t build muscles. It’s important to enjoy your exercise time but make sure that the focus remains on physical activity. If you think the scale doesn’t lie, consider this. Many professional athletes would be considered obese based on their weight alone. Look at the bigger and more relevant picture. Monitor your body fat percentage, if possible. Otherwise track measurements. Also don’t underestimate the importance of improved physical and mental well-being. It’s always advisable to consult your physician & trainers before starting an exercise program. Working with fitness professional is also a good idea so you can learn proper technique, the latest fitness information and learn how to avoid injuries. Choosing the proper weight size when strength training is trickier then it sounds. Lifting weights that are too heavy for you can lead to improper form and ultimately to injuries. Use weights that are too light and the exercise session can be ineffective. It is best to consult a fitness trainer to determine the correct amount of weight for your size, strength and goals. A trainer can also help you develop a plan for safely progressing forward on weight sizes Hiring a personal trainer can be a great way of helping you achieve fitness goals or more generally improve your wellbeing. These are able to assess your current fitness level and to help encourage and motivate you.

SPORTS & FITNESS SQuash:
COURT CIRCULAR By The Boaster
The SSRA (Singapore S q u a s h R a c q u e t s Association) interclub competition for 2015 is now well under way. The British Club are entered in A grade and the E grade veterans’ division and, in what is quickly becoming the talk of the courts, the vets recently served up another Friday night special, winning all four rubbers against the Hollandse Club. There was a bit of a scratchy start to the day with the Dutch declaring early on that they only had three players available and then with the British Club into the warm up phase of preparation (i.e. 2 hours before the match) proudly announced they would be fielding a team of four after all. Responding to a late call from the team, Nick Fell stepped off a plane and straight into the #4 spot– a great effort. Once the pre-match ritual was carried out (checking of the soles of the shoes as outlined in the January Club magazine pages 1 and 22), Mansoor was first onto the hallowed timber. His opponent was sporting a vivid orange shirt and a pair of dayglo shoes and looked just like a Christmas tree. He came out of the blocks fast winning the first game, but then like a pine tree in the New Year he withered away and fell to pieces, and went down to a surging Mansoor. 3-2 To the BC Captain Fantastic and Aussie legend Matt Gyde, was next up against an old adversary, Manoj. The last time they played it was a five setter and this time was to prove no different. With many long rallies, the thick haze that was hanging over Singapore seemed to have an impact on the fitness of both but just like the first time they played, Matt dug deep and came out with a 3-2 win. Meanwhile Craig the crafty Cannuck was on the court ‘enjoying’ an expressive match against his opponent – Matt commented that from the court next door it sounded as though the riot squad may need to be called in. Craig, in usual fashion, pushed aside the controversy, got down to business, and won 3-0. His opponent didn’t seem to be too keen to finish off the match and actually refused a beer (on the first offering) but came around in the end. Matt points out (for those non-Australians reading this) that this is against the laws of life, regardless of how you finish a game if there is beer being offered you take it… Nick was last up and playing a tricky opponent, who obviously went to the Andrew Marshall School of Squash and played every ball into the side wall first. Whilst effective in the 3rd set (Nick may have been affected by jet lag) Nick was able to counter the aggressive boasting with some sublime straight-down-the-wall squash and won 3-1. All in all a great night out at the British Club and with back-to-back 4-0 wins for our veterans, a great start to the SSRA season.

A Whole Load of Balls
By Louise Wood
Get your Travolta on – make the most of these summer nights and join us for some al fresco frivolity. It will be a full-house but tickets are still available for Grease night – everyone is welcome.
A Right Exhibition The spectator gallery was full to bust with an extremely enthusiastic crowd (the bar was open) when the coaches treated the Tennis Section to an afternoon of exhibition matches. Showing us how it should be done in the doubles Darren and Sam took on Cyril and David and just fell short of victory despite their matching team tops. David then dared to take on the might of former ATP ranked player Cyril Baudin and was rewarded with a win. Huge thanks to all the coaches for being such great sports and providing the tennis section with a very entertaining afternoon. There have been calls for an ‘encore’ – watch out David you may be defending your title. Special mention to 16 year old Logan Smith who, using his WTA experience, managed against all odds to organise the tennis section children into a sleek and efficient ball boy/girl operation for the matches. (Logan, some parents have indicated they will pay highly to know your secret).
BC coaches and the fantastic ball boys and girls at the Coaches Exhibition Match
Game Face Competition News Smashing! Well done to all the BC Junior teams who competed Masterful. BC players once again proved experience really in the recent SMASH team tournament. Congratulations to the does count in the month-long Masters tennis tournament. U12B team who came away with a third place trophy. New friendships were made and old rivalries cemented. Congratulations to the winners. Men’s Singles Ladies Doubles Men’s Doubles Mixed Doubles
Mackenzie Wood, Jude Thomas & Maya Das with their Smash trophies. Teammates Ethan Phillipson, Sean Ventura & Callum Blacklock are not pictured.
The BC’s Grand Slam. It is time to register for the BC Open tournament - this could be the year you make it to the winner’s board in Scores. Or, if you are a mere mortal like most of us, sign up for a bit of fun and a chance to play some competitive tennis. Will Charlie Thomas retain his singles title or will David Brown wrestle it away from him once more? Will the combination of Tina Jacob and Clytie Morgan prove unbeatable in the ladies doubles? The Open really does draw out our tennis stars and if (like me) you are out after the first round then our compensation is that the final stages are very exciting to watch from the comfort of Scores with a few refreshments.

Bye Bye Phillipson Family
The Phillipson Family
I don’t know if you’ve noticed the startling comparison between being the British High Commissioner to Singapore and being Dr Who? After a given period they both must regenerate. Ok, so that’s maybe where my analogy ends, although like the TARDIS Eden Hall is pretty big on the inside too. Soon we shall welcome a new British High Commissioner and it is with a heavy heart that we say farewell to HE Antony Phillipson and his family who have made a glorious contribution to tennis at the club. Julie Phillipson and sons Nicky (13), Ethan (11) and Hamish (8) have been a real asset to the BC Tennis Section. Julie who started at the club as a beginner stormed her way through the WITS team tennis divisions with two first place trophies to her name. Her current team BC Court Appeal is wondering if she is still free to commute to B-division matches each Wednesday? Hamish has recently taken up tennis at the club and Nicky and Ethan are old pros having made many friends in the BC junior KLM and SMASH teams. We’ve seen the boys develop into cracking young players and I don’t think they would forgive me if I failed to mention Mum is not the only one bringing back the ‘bling’; between them the Phillipson boys have won a cache of KLM, SMASH and club awards. The whole family will be missed both on and off the court so on behalf of all your friends in the Tennis Section best of luck in Blighty and bon voyage.
Tip from the Pro “For a better ball toss hold the ball lightly in your fingertips making sure your arm is straight as you place, not throw, the ball in the air. By transferring weight onto your front leg just before you release the ball you’ll ensure it moves into the court and not backwards over your head!” David Waggett, BC Tennis Coach. To book a tennis lesson, please contact Sajan at Sajan@britishclub.org.sg

GOLF SECTION HAPPENINGS By Nic Merrow-Smith Golf Section News The April Medal has been switched from Seletar Country Club to SICC Sime Course, due to availability. The September Medal will be switched from SICC to Seletar Country Club.
Golf Section Committee 2015; David Christie, Paul Nikkel, Richard Holloway, Nic Merrow-Smith, Charles Pierron and (not in photo) Kevin Gibson.
What’s In The Bag Today we put our two time Order of Merit Winner David Kempton in the spotlight and ask him ‘what’s in your bag?’ “And you are?” “David Kempton, two time winner of the British Club Golf Section Order of Merit.” (ed. “Yes, we’ve got that already!”) “What brings you to Singapore?” “Well, work said ‘would you like to go?’ Once the package was right I answered ‘yes please!’” “What do you love about the British Club?” “The food in the Mountbatten, playing cricket and a round of golf with like-minded people of a similar generation and beers in the Scores bar of a Saturday evening after a game. Not to forget the great staff who make the Club really special.” “What’s your favourite course?” Tough one that; either Tering Bay or Batam Hills which are both in Batam. I suppose Batam Hills nicks it because of the ridiculous architecture. (ed. “Pretty weird for sure, like a set out of ‘The Mummy!’”) “And your favourite hole on a golf course?” “The one I’ve just birdied, naturally.” “So, what would you shoot on a good day?” “90, I’ve had a few of those and I’m now looking for a score that begins with an 8!” “And your claim to fame?” “Well, I’ve played cricket against NZ test batsman Mark Greatbatch and rugby with England captain and Lions scrum half, Nigel Melville. Then there’s Wok Golf Championship where I was the first to win a full point (Northern Hemisphere vs Southern Hemisphere) in the match play challenge.” And David’s Weapons of Choice are; Driver: Callaway RAZR Fit, graphite shaft No. 3 Wood: Callaway RAZR X Black, graphite shaft Irons; 2, 3, 4: Callaway Fit i2 Hybrids, graphite shaft Irons; 5: Callaway RAZR X HL Hybrids graphite shaft Irons; 6: Callaway RAZR X HL Hybrids steel shaft Irons; 7, 8, 9: Callaway X 22 with graphite shaft Wedges: A sand wedge which I don’t know why I (bother to) carry Chippers: Two : Texas Wedge, steel shaft, for shots from 100 down to 40 yards out and a ‘Herbies One Putt’ wedge, which very occasionally lives up to it’s name, used for around the green and bunker shots Putter: White Hot XG Rosie with customised (bent) shaft. Ball: Several - occasionally in one hole. Aids: uh hum, yes, no; Golf Buddy GPS which talks to me on the course and is supposed to give the correct distance; but if it worked I’d be a scratch golfer by now! And Lastly we asked David to describe his dress rational; “Mainly ‘cammo’ so I can play unseen, but for a splash of lurid colour contributed by Mrs Kempton.” Sadly David left Singapore at the end of January and we have lost one of our most committed section members and committee stalwart. We wish him all the best, where ever he tees up his ball. THE BRITISH CLUB

February Medal Our first Friday Medal of the year and what a turn-out; only surpassed by some ridiculously low scoring. On a blustery day at Tanah Merah Country Club, the straight hitters had their day, out-smarting the dog legs, narrow fairways and undulating greens of the Tampines Course. 15 of us ventured out on the course with 12 section members participating in the Order of Merit. On a course where accuracy and a perfected short game were more useful than brute strength, our seniors were having great rounds. Runner-up spot was awarded to David Christie, with a stableford score of 44 points, pipped by Colin Allcard, with a stableford score of 45 points. Their combined gross scores of 178 is not so very far away from their combined age and with a bit more work on the putting, we could see someone shooting their age! Due to the calamities of the scoring, both agreed to share the spoils; a box of the new Titleist Pro V1 golf balls. Sleeves of Pro V1 balls were also awarded for nearest the pin and longest drive, and to our ladies champion on the day, Nina Sung.
Our medal winner Colin Allcard launches one into the woods off the first tee and recovers to shoot a gross score of 90.
Lunch, golf and beer after the game, Tanah Merah Tampines Course.
JCC Monday Night League The league is now employing a state of the art smart phone software that computes the team score while you are still on the course. By the time everyone gathers for a beer after the game, the team results are already on display in the clubhouse. By all accounts we are creeping up the table after a rusty start.
