This month there are again many activities and we hope that there will be something for everyone. In our monthly Wine & Gourmet Dinner we will be featuring a selection of wines from Argentina. Argentina is known for its fine and original wines that reflect the climate, terrain and the long local wine making tradition. We are happy to have Mr Guy Nussey, Regional Director of VCT Asia to lead this event where he will share with us his appreciation of the wines over a 5-course dinner. This will take place on 18 March, 7.30pm onwards. Reservations are required for this event, so please call the Club or email mountbattenrsvn@ britishclub.org.sg to secure your place. For the fourth year in a row, we are delighted to announce that the Club will be organising a celebration of the Best of British from 3rd to 11th June! There will be a variety of events with a British theme and a special celebration of Her Majesty the Queen’s 90th Birthday. The majority of the events will be for members only and we hope there will be something that will attract many of you to the Club. The events also support our annual fundraising effort on behalf of our two designated charities. If you are keen not only to attend but to explore the opportunities to sponsor the week or individual events, please do not hesitate to contact us at 6410 1111 or email marketing@britishclub. org.sg. We have many collaboration opportunities to showcase your organisation or company as part of the Best of British celebrations. For music lovers, you may be pleased to know that we have a new band, The Dylan Foster Trio, joining us at The Windsor Arms, playing every Saturday starting this month. Expect a repertoire of different genres from soul to jazz with open requests from the floor. This band has a great reputation and we hope they will get strong support from the members of the Club. Be sure to look out for the F&B promotions in the evenings, especially our Night Owl drink promotions which are available from 9pm till late! Join us for St. Patrick’s Day on Friday, 18 March at The Windsor Arms as we celebrate the Patron Saint and National Apostle of Ireland. Members will be treated to a buffet of Irish-themed dishes with live music from our guest performer Gerry Cox who is well known in the Irish music scene. There may be some well-known Irish drinks poured that night! Have a great month ahead and Happy Easter! DAMIAN R. HILLS President THE BRITISH CLUB

GM’S MESSAGE

Dear Members, Hope you had a great February! As we end the first quarter of the year, I’d like to give a warm welcome to our new members joining in and highlight some of the events happening in the Club. Every first Thursday of the month, we welcome our new members with a cocktail reception at The Treetops Terrace. This event is to officially welcome new Members to the Club and is open to all existing Members too. The next one is on Thursday, 3 March. Please approach our Member Relations Team at the Reception desk if you would like to join the event. We will be having our Open House on Sunday, 6 March. The Club will be open to both Members and non-Members alike, so do take this opportunity to introduce your friends to the Club. Members get to earn triple reward points when their friends sign-up with us. Have a good laugh with us at our Comedy Night. Featuring international comedians from the UK and the US, join us on Thursday, 10 March at The Windsor Arms. There will also be a selected dinner menu available from 6.30pm onwards. For bookings, please email activities@britishclub.org.sg. We will be having our poolside party with an Under the Sea theme on Saturday, 19 March from 5.30pm onwards. Children and adults alike can enjoy the evening at the Verandah Café with entertainment and games for the whole family! This is followed by Earth Hour from 7pm onwards. In an effort to raise awareness for conservation, the event will kick start with an Arts and Crafts session for the children followed by a ceremonial shutting off of lights at the lobby from 8.30pm to 9.30pm. With Easter happening on Saturday, 27 March, children will delight in the activities we have planned for them. As this is one of our popular events, do book early to enjoy egg-citing arts and crafts, a storytelling session and, of course, our much anticipated Easter Egg hunt! There will be special food & beverage offers available on the same day so do refer to the F&B section on page 26. On a final note, I would like inform our Members of the dress code when you step into the Club. You may refer to our 3 Fundamentals Card for more information on the attire required. To obtain a copy of this card, please approach our Member Relations Team at the Reception desk.

Investors in UK Property Face Tax Hit By Martin Rimmer, Tax Manager - Asia Pacific, The Fry Group

Expats investing in the UK property market are digesting proposed changes that have potential to add thousands of pounds of stamp duty on future property purchases. Under the proposals, which are scheduled to take effect in April, stamp duty will be increased by three percent for investors buying second homes or investment properties in England, Wales or Northern Ireland (but not Scotland which has devolved legal powers in this area). The revisions would apply an additional 3% to the current graduated rates of Stamp Duty, so that a buyer who is caught by these rules would pay at 3% on the first GBP 125,000, 5% on the next GBP 125,000 and 8% on the balance up to GBP 925,000. A rate of 13% would be charged on the balance between GBP 925,000 to GBP 1.5 million with a top rate of 15% on the balance above GBP 1.5 million. So a second property costing GBP 650,000 which completes on 31st March 2016 would attract Stamp Duty of GBP 22,500. If it is completed on 1st April 2016 the Stamp Duty would be GBP 42,000. The kicker for overseas investors is that the UK tax authorities, in calculating your tax, will take into account any residential property you own anywhere in the world. So if you are living in Singapore investing in the UK property market (perhaps for your retirement) if you already own at least one residential property anywhere – the increased tax rate will apply to you. The news gets worse before it gets better. The changes will also apply if you are a joint owner of a residential property anywhere around the world. For that matter any property owned by a spouse or civil partner also qualifies. Even property held in the name of children under majority age will count as yours for these purposes. And trusts or companies will also need to pay up if they invest in UK residential property – in fact they will pay the higher rates from their first investment property – although the UK is looking at exempting purchasers (be they trusts, funds or individuals) buying more than 15 properties. The new rules also threaten to add more complexity to an already mindboggling UK property tax system. For example if you buy a second home in the UK before selling your primary residence you will be eligible to pay the tax. You will only be able to claim a refund if you sell the current home within 18 months. The one concession they make is that you do not have to pay the additional rates of Stamp Duty if you are replacing your main home. But even there we find a problem. If the proposals are adopted we end up with a situation where there are four different interpretations of the concept of a ‘main home’ as far as UK tax authorities are concerned. While a rush of transactions might be expected before the 1st April 2016 deadline - over the longer term the overseas investor, or the expat looking to buy property to retire to in the UK, will need to consider their options very carefully.

The Craft Group

The Craft Group hosted a stall at The British Club’s Christmas Bazaar in November. Our Members’ handmade Christmas decorations, bunting, table runners, place mats, gift bags, toys and many other festive items all sold well. Proceeds from the stall, together with the raffle of a quilt and wall hanging, raised the substantial sum of $5,800. The Club very generously rounded this up to $6,000 and we were delighted to contribute cheques of $3,000 each to Riding for the Disabled and The Gurkha Welfare Trust. The Craft Group is for everyone who enjoys coffee, conversation and crafts. We meet every Tuesday in the Tree Tops lounge from 10am and would like to extend an invitation to everyone, from curious beginners to experienced crafters, to come and join us. We quilt, knit, crochet, weave, felt, colour, paint and make jewellery. You can bring your own projects or join in with larger group efforts. Please do come and join us. You can even follow the group on FaceBook!

The British Club sends its deepest condolences to the family of the late Philip Caroline. Philip was the oldest member of the Club at 93 when he passed on in January this year. A frequent visitor to The Windsor Arms and member of the Barflies Quiz Team, Philip will be sadly missed and fondly remembered by us all.

“OUR WAY” by Raelene Tan EASTER It’s springtime in Britain, indicating that Easter is here! The Easter season begins with Lent, on Wednesday, 10 February this year, to Easter Sunday, 27 March, and continues to Pentecost Sunday, 15 May, making it the most important festival in the Christian calendar.Significant dates are Ash Wednesday (first day of Lent); the fourth Sunday, Mothering Sunday, when children traditionally give mothers gifts of simnel-cake; Palm Sunday one week before Easter Sunday, symbolising Jesus’ arrival in Jerusalem; and Maundy Thursday commemorating the Last Supper the day before Good Friday, which commemorates Jesus Christ’s crucifixion, before His resurrection on Easter Sunday. White Easter lilies, greenery and candles are customary decorations. Much-enjoyed pancake-races on Lent eve are traditionally English, dating back to 1445. Competitors run through village streets, tossing pancakes three times in their pans, as a fun-filled way to use up eggs and dairy products, customarily not eaten during Lent. On Good Friday, fish and aromatic hot-cross-buns are generally eaten. Easter Sunday, eggs, lamb and chicken are consumed, representing new life. Popular chocolate eggs and rabbits symbolise new life and fertility, respectively. Egg-decorating and games featuring eggs are time-honoured customs, such as Easter-egg hunts and egg-rolling races. Milliners prepare bonnets for the much-loved Easter Parade, immortalised in Irving Berlin’s song of the same name, held on Easter Sunday at Rotten Row, Hyde Park in London, with new outfits worn to celebrate new life. Chocolate Easter-eggs make nice gifts on Easter Sunday. “Happy Easter”. Photographs: Courtesy of Royal Plaza on Scotts

MEMBER IN THE SPOTLIGHT

Member in the spotlight For this issue of Member in the Spotlight, we are pleased to feature Nicholas Jon Barton. Nick joined the Club in 2015. He is currently a Chief Commercial Officer of Intercontinental Hotel. In this issue, we are pleased to have Nick sharing a glimpse of his life and success story.

As one of the leaders in the hospitality industry, what would you say are the critical values that one must have to succeed? Determination, resilience and some good fortune – in equal measure. The hospitality industry moves fast and we deal in a perishable product, which when rooms go unsold means lost opportunity. I’ve been fortunate to have learned from some great leaders and mentors. The best advice I ever got was to hire people better than you are. I keep that advice with me and it’s primarily the people, and the stories, that keeps me enthusiastic about the hotel industry. What is your motivation? What inspires you? I find my motivation from colleagues, friends and family that have a positive and opportunistic outlook on life and its possibilities. For me the glass is always half full. My children, Maddy (10) and Harry (12) are constant sources of inspiration and they always remind me to keep trying to be better, as a father, husband and leader. I’m inspired by travel and my wife and I share a wanderlust that will probably never go away; spending time in new cultures will always teach you something new. C

I was fortunate to have had an enthusiastic Music teacher at school who inspired a passion for jazz, and I’m an occasional saxophonist when business travel allows, in the BC Band/Music Section. Come and check us out every first Thursday at the Windsor! When time allows, I love to surf with the kids in Bali. We’re lucky to have a fantastic InterContinental Resort at Jimbaran Bay, and the waves on that coast always keep us going back. Changgu is our current favourite surf spot. What brought you to the Club and what are the things that you like the most about being a Member of the Club? We lived in Shanghai for 5 years before coming to Singapore and wanted to find a Club to expand our social horizons and keep up our hobbies, so BC fitted the bill. The Tennis Section is great, and Sam is still busy working on my Federer backhand. My wife enjoys the weekday aqua spin classes, and the family quiz is a highlight of the week for the kids after a busy week! What are your favourite restaurants in the Club and in Singapore in general? The Windsor does a great pint of Guinness and a Pie, and the Indian specialities are my daughter’s favourite. The Xiao Long Bao at Din Tai Fung are still the worlds’ best; those guys know how to do dumplings. Chop Suey at Dempsey for old school cool. Harry’s bar on a Friday night in Holland Village. East Coast Lagoon Village for satay and a beer after a bike ride.

WINE & GOURMET DINNER

Friday, 18 March • 7.30pm onwards

$98.00+ Member • $108.00+ Guest Argentina boasts of a wealth of natural resources and areas of great scenic beauty, including high summits and plains, lush forests and absolute arid deserts, woods and steppes, glaciers and waterfalls. Any landscape you may imagine, you can find somewhere on Argentine soil. Argentine winemaking regions are often located in broad valleys or sloping plains and offer ideal conditions for grape growing. It should be also be noted that most of their vineyards are located far from cities and their pollution, and young, scarcely tilled soils. Every detail makes Argentine wine unique, authentic, and remarkable due to its intense colours, deep aromas and broad range of flavours. From its smooth Malbec to its floral Torrontes, Argentina produces some of the finest and most original wines worldwide. We are happy to have Mr Guy Nussey, Regional Director of VCT Asia to share with us the uniqueness of the Argentina wines over a 5-Course dinner. VCT is the world’s most powerful wine brand, distributing and marketing products such as Frontera, the world’s bestselling Chilean wine, Casillero del Diablo, the wine sponsor of Manchester United, Don Melchor and Vina Maipo across the Asia Pacific region.

The Macallan Edition No. 1 Single Malt Scotch Whisky

Nose Golden syrup, orange peel, cloudy honey and a hint of lychee

The Macallan Edition No. 1 is the first of a new, limited edition series to be released annually, for which a unique selection of oak casks will be identified to yield a new Macallan expression.

Palate Vanilla, toasted oak, ground ginger and cinnamon bark with a hint of green apple

Natural honey in colour. On the nose, orange, apple and dried fruit notes highlight a vibrant and rich aroma. Vanilla, toffee and chocolate underlay oak overtones. The palate is meandering, warming, wood spices; takes time to open up and reveal nutmeg, cinnamon, hints of dried ginger and toffee. The fruit appears later – fresh and balanced with fresh oak.

Finish Lingering spiciness and hints of ginger and green apple

WINE BY THE GLASS (available in all F&B outlets)

Tapena Verdejo 2013, Vino de La Tierra Castilla La Mancha, Spain Verdejo (ver-DAY-ho) is the Spanish answer to Sauvignon Blanc with a hint more floral aromas. Verdejo is known to come from several regions across Spain ranging from Rueda to Tierra de Castilla. This varietal has been written about by wine writers from Robert Parker to Hugh Johnson as the next hot white known for good value for money. This pale yellow hued wine has a vibrant nose with an array of aromas of tropical fruits over a backdrop of ripe peaches. The palate is full of bright stone fruit that is beautifully balanced with a crisp, refreshing acidity and a lingering finish with a hint of minerality. Pairs well with many different dishes. Try it with grilled salmon, lemon chicken, creamy lighter cheeses such as goat cheese or a fresh summer salad.

Tapena Tempranillo 2013, Spain This quintessential red wine grape from Spain, Tempranillo, the little early one, adapts well to varied growing conditions. We think of Tempranillo as Pinot Noir in blue jeans. Intense ruby red in colour along with violet-blue undertones which characterise this wine youth. This classic Tempranillo holds juicy red fruit aromas with just a touch of chocolate. On the palate, you will find ripe red fruit flavours with a soft and silky finish carrying supple tannins and great length. Combines beautifully with roast or grilled red meats in addition to a multitude of different tapas, from grilled kebabs to garlic prawns.

$49.00+ per bottle • $10.50+ per glass

SPORTS & FITNESS Golf:

GOLF SECTION HAPPENINGS By Nic Merrow-Smith Hot News - ISCGT 2016 1st Leg For the first time in our history, we will be hosting the Inter-Social Club Golf Tournament (ISCGT) at Raffles Country Club on Friday 11th March. We welcome over 90 golfers from six social clubs including Serangoon Gardens Country Club, Singapore Recreation Club, Singapore Swimming Club, Chinese Swimming Club, The Eurasian Association and Changi Beach Club. This is a fun competition and although we haven’t had much success in the past, I’m sure we can put out squad to make some waves. This is open to all Club Golfers, so please lock that Friday afternoon in your diary and help us show our hospitality. We are encouraged to put out a team off 16 golfers. You may also sign-up for the social flights if you just want to come along, play golf and show your support. Thank you.

Monthly Stableford Prizes New for 2016, our Monthly Stableford competitors will be vying for a chance to celebrate within the Club’s F&B establishments. If we maintain your handicap, or you or your guest have a current USGA or equivalent handicap, you are entitled to any prize. If not, then only to the novelty prizes. If your guests wins a prize, then you will need to bring him along to the Club and share his prize; doubling your chances of winning something. So bring more guests! Winners will receive a voucher for 2 to dine at The Mountbatten whilst the runner-up gets to drown his sorrows at the Windsor Arms. Our novelty prize (Nearest the Pin) winners will also be visiting the Windsor Arms or Scores.

The Force Awakens: January Stableford brings even more grief!

Davy Yeo with eventual winner Oliver Stoffel (2nd from left,) muscling up to his flight mates (from left to right,) new section member Chris Taylor, David Christie and multiple prize recipient on the day, Abhijit Patwardhan.

When only a selfie will do; Nic Merrow-Smith with (from left to right) Trevor Haeger, Rohit Shah and Davy Yeo on the 18th.

What a traumatic start to the year! Really, Kylo Ren himself must have been out on the course to choose the pin positions for our January outing. By the 10th hole, all but Oliver Stoffel had capitulated and fallen prey to Seletar’s pin placements. Our congratulations to Oliver who used his generous handicap allowance for the last time, to secure 40 points and win the January Stableford by a country mile. He will be dining at The Mountbatten restaurant for his efforts. Abhijit Patwardhan joined us for the first time in almost a year to secure not one but both the Nearest the Pin awards and Runner-up spot. No sign of the slice, duff shots and the usual rubbish that comes with playing either too much or not enough golf. He tells me his calamities on the course almost forced him to give up the game last year. It was great to see some new faces too, with Rohit Shah (cricket) and Trevor Haeger (tennis) joining us for the first time.

Men’s Monday Night League The Monday Night Men’s Golf League got off to a cracking start at Orchid Country Club on 18th January. No fireworks from our boys though, but I suppose it’s early days. Apparently they come strong at the end! No team photo as yet but this is who is representing the British Club; Steve Settle, Charles Pierron, Gary Cunning, David Christie, John Hancock, Andrew Stearns, Richard Stapley-Oh and Sean Neilan. Should you wish to participate you may attend as a guest; just come along to Orchid Country Club on any Monday evening and be prepared to tee off at 6pm. Entry is $150 for non-OCC member participants. More details can be found at https://occmngl.golfgenius.com. THE BRITISH CLUB

SPORTS & FITNESS SWIMMING:

Section Report By Alex Smillie The British Club swim section starts 2016 on a high after a whole host of fantastic achievements by its Barracuda members last year. Individual awards were presented at The British Club Barracudas Awards evening at the end of 2015 to many swimmers for their stroke skills, diligence and general improvement. Well done not only to all those who won an award but to everyone who participates to help make The British Club team what it is. In November of last year, The British Club took part in a meet at the American Club. It was an exciting competition with swimmers aged from 6 to 16. The excitement held whether it was a 25m freestyle race for 6 year olds or 200m freestyle for 16 year olds! The tension, the cheering, and of course, the winning, made for a fantastic day. Thanks to our talented swimmers, the BC Barracudas Medal Tally Report for 2015 puts The British Club in first place in the Merlion League with 19 Gold, 25 Silver and 11 Bronze Medals! In the Neptune league, The British Club holds third place with 17 Gold, 17 Silver and 17 Bronze medals! What an amazing achievement by our club swimmers, all of which has been accomplished through dedication, commitment and determination from both the club swimmers and our fantastic coaches! Well done to all.

We had a great turnout for our annual Christmas Masters dinner at the treetops in December. It was great to see everyone together and a good night was had by all. We are always happy to see new people join our Masters swim squad so if you are interested to know more please email swimming@britishclub.org.sg. This year, the Barracudas are fortunate enough to have the Stamford American International School as our sponsor. With this sponsorship The British Club will be investing in some newly designed British Club swimming costumes for all swimmers, including the option of a knee-skin swimsuit for the girls. It makes for another exciting chapter in our growth as The British Club team. As a Club, we are extremely proud of our swimming section and want to continue to grow. This is mainly due to the dedication of our fantastic coaches and expanding reputation. Please sign up if you are interested in joining our fun and hard working swimming club by emailing swimming@britishclub.org.sg

THE LEAGUE OF EXTRAORDINARY GENTLEMEN By Craig Telmer & The Boaster

The 2016 squash committee consists of 15 finely-tuned athletes. We are rumoured to be the largest committee of any sport at The British Club. We strongly believe that “many hands make light work” and “I don’t mind doing something to promote squash if it includes free beer at committee meetings”. Your squash committee has set the following goals for 2016 1. Compete at the highest levels (for our age and waistlines) in SSRA and COSMO. 2. Go on an international tour without anybody being arrested. 3. Win back the Ryder Cup, War of Roses or Ashes silverware. Any one will do. 4. Have somebody challenge Charlie Thomas in the BC Open . . . if that fails dramatically adjust handicaps and try again in the Handicap Championship. 5. Find a few more squash players to grow our section. 6. Have an enjoyable and injury free 2016 squash season. Thanks to all committee members for their time and effort spent promoting squash and The British Club.

SPORTS & FITNESS Tennis:

March advice - read and absorb! Edited by Julia Fenton

As we draw close to the end of the year’s first quarter, the WITS season is well underway with energetic vigour and enthusiasm being shown from our BC teams. We have some superb advice for these WITS as well as junior players, from Head Coach Darren Moore.

Coaches Top Tips – Scouting your Opponent When determining how to play a match scouting is your opponent is crucial. When observing your opponent you are basically looking for a player’s strengths and weaknesses, their favourite shots, how they construct a point, how they handle the big points, can they and do they adjust their game? Take time to consider the following: • Is their forehand or backhand their dominant shot? • Do they play with topspin, slice or can they play all the spins? • Do they prefer to play shots across court or like to change direction down the line? • Are they better at serving or returning? • Are they a fast starter or do they get better as the match goes on? • Do they play aggressively; setting the play or more defensively with counter punches? • Do they attack the net or prefer the baseline? The above highlight some of the key parts of the game. Once you assess your opponent’s game, look to then match your strengths into their least favourite shots. Whilst it may not work immediately, as with anything, the more you practice the better you will get at playing strategic tennis.

Parent & Child Social – enthusiasm sparks across the generations Families were out in force at the start of the year with a successful social on 9 January, featuring many keen players. Keep your eyes open for future dates when this popular event will be repeated!

Teen Social – welcoming new members This now permanent listing in the tennis schedule restarted on Sunday, 10 January when regulars met up again as friends and also to give a warm welcome to two keen new faces; Calum Rowan and Mac Wood (both now just 12 years old). SCUBA:

The Scuba Section will be at ADEX again this year! By Karo De Beul This year the Scuba Section / FreeFlow Divers will have a booth at the Asian Dive Expo (ADEX), and we would like to encourage you to visit us (and the fair) to chat with fellow divers, book that next dive trip, buy some dive kit at promotional prices or to attend any of the activities that are being organised in the context of the fair. Each year more activities are being organised and new activities for this year include a book festival and a Singapore pavilion to celebrate the opening of Singapore’s first marine park. Recurring activities include a Tek conference, free dive workshops, guest speakers covering subjects from underwater photography to conservation, an activity zone for children and representation of a large number of scuba brands and scuba operators from the region. ADEX is a fair well worth visiting, both for novices and experienced divers. We will have a limited amount of free tickets for ADEX 2016. Contact the Scuba Section (scuba@britishclub.org.sg) to reserve your free ticket (subject to availability). If you missed out on free tickets, you can still flash your British Club membership card to get access to the fair at a reduced fee of $5. RECIPROCAL CLUB SPOTLIGHT

Laguna National Golf & Country Club (Singapore)

A golfer’s haven, sporting two eighteen-hole championship courses with a multimillion private clubhouse and hotel underway, and strategically located in proximity to the airport, beach and malls, golfers will find the world at their fingertips, here at Laguna National. Laguna National’s golf courses that have won prestigious accolades and hosted international championships including the European Tour’s Singapore Masters, Korean LPGA-ADT Caps Tour Championship and European and Asian Tour co-sanctioned event, The Championship at Laguna National. Designed and built by Dye Designs, World Classic—touted as Asia’s Toughest Test, draws inspiration from many of the world’s best known holes and course designs. Golfers will inevitably find themselves facing similar shots to those played on the famous links courses of the British Isles, or the championship layouts found along coastal North America. The course is rated 165 on the Slope Rating System and 76.9 from the championship tees. The Masters Course is renowned for its beautiful parkland layout with towering local trees and greenery where golfers can experience Singapore’s tropical botany including the red flame and rainforest trees that flower throughout the year. Besides a scenic walk in the park, Masters also provides a stern test of golf with water coming into play on ten of its 18 holes. Perhaps its signature hole, the par 5 11th hole, features a lake on the right side of the first shot and another on the left of the second shot, compelling golfers to take strategic and accurately placed shots. Next to its award-winning Masters Course is Laguna National’s new 19th hole, The Nest. The golf themed restaurant and bar offers an upscale dining experience serving western, Japanese and local cuisine. Patrons can dine in full view of the Masters Course’s finishing hole and its beautiful lake from both inside the restaurant and outdoor terrace. Come experience one of Singapore’s finest championship courses and dining sanctuary.
