President’sMessage
Dear Members,
Our development committee features in this magazine to report on the progress with a special focus on the main building air-conditioning replacement initiative. This will significantly improve the climate control within the areas frequented by members as well as those used by staff most notably the kitchens. It is also a highly visible project to reduce our Co2 footprint, increase efficiency by using less power and contribute towards a sustainable future. We aim to complete this key project by the end of this year.
We also recently completed the renovation of the stairway leading to reception in the main building. You may notice new frames added along the walls of the stairway, these are celebrities who have visited the Club since it was opened in 1987, in the presence of The Princess Royal, Princess Anne. Did you know that David Beckham OBE visited the Club in 2005? Take a walk up and down the stairway to discover the many other dignitaries that have been to the Club.
In 2023 and 2024 we’ve seen some wonderful developments to the Club and many of these developments originate from your feedback in the last Member Survey back in 2021. This month we are running our Member Survey again, so I encourage each of you to complete this and give your feedback on the Club. The results of the survey help set priorities in further facilities development in the Club. Participation also gives you a chance to win some great prizes!
As we get closer to summer, we understand many of our members look to leave Singapore and move to other locations or return home. I would like to remind members that you do not have to completely give up your membership when you relocate. We’ve a whole page dedicated to the benefits of absent membership, so please look and consider these as an alternative solution!
Our forward calendar is brimming with exciting events scheduled for May and June and I can’t fit them all in this message, so I would leave it to you to flip the pages. On that note, I’m excited about the King’s Birthday Celebration and encourage you to make sure you book in early as seats are limited!

PRESIDENT’S MESSAGE • MAIN COMMITTEE 2023/2024 MAY/JUN 2024 2
Dear Members,
I hope you had a wonderful Easter break. We’ve just completed the upgrading works of the main lobby’s spiral staircase and it has been an enlightening journey as we put together a list of Royalty, celebrities and sports personalities who have visited the Club over the years. We have chosen a selection and had framed portraits made up which are now displayed on the staircase walls to commemorate their visit to the Club.
In the upcoming month, there are lots to look forward to, especially the King’s Birthday Celebration, which will be held by the swimming pool with live DJ, decorations, special drink menu and BBQ favourites to mark the occasion. Apart from this, you can also look forward to a TGIF Burgers and Beats party which was organised for adults to unwind and enjoy yourselves after a long workweek. We are always excited to bring you new and exciting events, so flip the pages to see what else we have instore.
I'd like to bring your attention to two exciting promotions happening at the Club over the next two months that you won't want to miss. On weekdays, many parents bring their children to the Club for swimming and tennis lessons after school. We understand that preparing meals for your child can be challenging, so we're making it more convenient by offering a complimentary kids' meal with every adult meal purchased in Verandah Café! For the adults, there is an ongoing Happy Hour promotion at Windsor Arms where you can enjoy draft beer, wine, and champagnes for as low as 2 for $20. Here’s your excuse to enjoy a mid-week drink to fuel your energy for the rest of the week.
Regarding Club development, as mentioned in President’s message, we're in the midst of upgrading the air conditioning throughout the Club. Stay tuned to our member’s portal and mobile app for further updates and exciting announcements.

DEVELOPMENT UPDATE
AIRCONDITIONING REPLACEMENT
At the last Annual General Meeting, we updated members on the pipeline of projects needed to maintain and enhance the Club. The Main Club building’s air conditioning has been at the top of the consideration list for some time.
Our current air conditioning system has now reached the end of its operational life. One of the three chillers has not been operational since 2018, and parts are no longer in production. Additionally, air-cooled chillers like ours are energy inefficient and being phased out across Singapore.
A third-party energy audit in November last year confirmed that our chillers’ performance efficiency was at the lowest level and that replacing them was the biggest single item identified to reduce the Club’s energy consumption.
In January, having regard for an independent consultant’s recommendations, the energy audit, and the risk of failure of the existing end-of-operational-life system, the Main Committee bit the bullet and gave approval to replace the Club’s chillers at a cost of $1.74 million. We will be replacing three air-cooled chillers with two water-cooled chillers with electrical system management.
The chillers are now in order, and we expect to install them towards the end of this year and early next year. This will involve removing the old chillers, which are located behind the Main Club carpark and rehousing the new chillers. This is a big project that will significantly reduce the Club’s energy consumption, give us a better, more flexible air conditioning system that will serve us for many years to come, and enable us to move on with certainty on other development projects! Lifetime Member Leaving Singapore for more than 3 months?
Here’s 5 reasons why you should keep your Club Membership and go on Absent Status!
Perhaps you're relocating for work, pursuing new adventures abroad, or simply embarking on a change of scenery. Whatever the reason, there’s good news, you don't have to cancel your membership with the Club!
Read on to find out why you should opt for Absent Status:
1. Affordable Absent Fee
The nominal Absent Fee of $350 (subject to taxes) per year, makes maintaining your Club membership a cost-effective choice. By paying to be on Absent Status, your monthly subscription fees will be frozen as well as your minimum spend.
2. Visiting Singapore?
By being on Absent status, you can visit the Club for 2 weeks of the year. That means if you’re coming back to see friends, or for a work trip, you can still come and use your Club and all the facilities.
3. Access to International Associate Clubs (IAC)
As an absent member, you still maintain access to over 200+ clubs from the IAC, so that you can expand your options while traveling. Simply log in and submit your visit requests directly to the clubs. You can handle this process on your own; there's no need to visit the Club for assistance.
4. Flexibility for Returning Members
The Absent Status option offers flexibility for members who anticipate returning to Singapore. You may be gone for a few years but end up moving back to Singapore. By being on Absent Status, you can pick up right where you left off when you return, without needing to pay a joining fee again.
5. Convenient Renewal Process
Should your absence extend beyond a year, the renewal process for Absent Status remains straightforward. By renewing your Absent Status within 60 days before its expiration, you can continue enjoying the benefits of Club membership without hassle.
Opting for Absent Status is a prudent decision for departing members of the British Club Singapore. It not only preserves your connection to the Club but also ensures that you can seamlessly reintegrate into the Club community when you return. For further details, kindly reach out to our Member Relations team at memberrelations@britishclub.org.sg . Note:

Timeless Elegance: Honouring 99 Years at Mountbatten Bar and Grill
On Saturday, 23 March, the Mountbatten Bar and Grill had the honour of hosting a 99-year birthday celebration for a member’s father, Ron Cox! The intimate yet meaningful celebration included his wife of 50 years, Kristel, along with their youngest son Andy, daughter-in-law Katherine, and their two grandchildren, Matthew and Eddie.
What adds to the significance of this occasion is that it was Ron’s first visit to Singapore since his 21st birthday in 1946, when he was serving in the RAF, and it was truly an honour for the Club to be selected as the venue for this memorable event. On behalf of the Club members and staff, we wish Ron a very happy birthday and we look forward to his return for his 100th!

THE SPRING BUDGET
In a highly anticipated speech, and something of a last chance to shift the dial ahead of the election, in March the UK Chancellor, Jeremy Hunt, delivered his ‘tax cutting’ budget. With the UK economy teetering on recession, and overall tax approaching a level not seen since the aftermath of World War 2, Mr Hunt was quick to begin his Spring Budget with a reminder of some of the momentous challenges which the Conservatives have faced including the pandemic, global financial crisis and energy shock.
Mr Hunt touched on the country’s direction of travel, noting that UK growth is building with predictions that inflation will drop below 2% by the summer.
Despite the optimism, it was clear there was a little room for manoeuvre, but an early reference that lower taxes create higher growth suggested some headline announcements were to come.
In what seemed something of a repeat of the Autumn Statement, the Chancellor shared a handful of tax raising measures - abolishing tax breaks for non-doms and those letting second homes as holiday properties, and increasing taxes on cigarettes and vapes - before announcing a range of tax cuts including another reduction in National Insurance.
Keep in mind that the budget speech presents proposals, but the finance bill must navigate the parliamentary process, potentially altering these proposals. Typically, a Spring budget's finance bill secures Royal Assent around July or August.
MAY/JUN 2024 18
The main announcements included:
• National Insurance – further cuts were announced with National Insurance dropping again by 2%, to 8% of earnings. There are also cuts for the self-employed.
• Non-doms – for UK residents whose permanent home is overseas there will be new rules governing tax, which will take effect from April 2025. Last year 68,800 non-doms were living in the UK, with around 37,000 claiming the special ‘remittance basis’ tax status.
• Child benefit - this will be paid to households where the highest-earning parent earns up to £60,000, rather than £50,000 with a consultation announced over how to ensure a fairer system based on total household income. At the moment the system can produce unfair results. A couple who each earn £45,000, £90,000 total income, would not face the High Income Child Benefit Charge. But if one of the couple earned £60,000 and the other earned nothing, so £60,000 total income, would face the High Income Child Benefit Charge.
• ISAs – a new £5,000 British ISA tax allowance will be offered for those who invest in UK-listed companies.
• Capital Gains Tax – the highest rate of Capital Gains Tax will reduce from 28% to 24% for property sales.
• VAT – the threshold at which small businesses need to register for VAT will rise from £85,000 to £90,000] from April.
• Furnished holiday lettings – from April 2025, landlords who rent out their second homes will no longer be able to enjoy tax advantages such as lower Capital Gains Tax rates and being able to offset the full cost of mortgage interest against profits.
• Non-economy flights – air passenger duty on business and first-cl ass flights will rise.
Most of what was announced had been well trailed ahead of the speech, yet there were still some surprises offered by Mr Hunt. Despite the usual commotion which surrounds these announcements, what’s clear is that there’s very little wriggle room for the government ahead of this year’s election. The reality is that the vast majority of UK taxpayers will still pay more in tax, not least because of frozen allowances, despite Mr Hunt’s claims that rates for workers are the lowest since 1975.

What if your room temperature was 1°C higher
By Monila Kothari, member of the Club since June, 2008
COMMITTEE
On 11 March 2011, Japan faced one of the worst natural disasters. A 9-9.1 MW undersea megathrust earthquake happened in the Pacific Ocean, 72 km east of the Toshika peninsula of the Tohoku region. It lasted approximately 6 minutes causing a tsunami. While the tsunami caused large scale destruction to property and life, it also instigated a major nuclear incident. One of the nuclear reactors that generated power for Japan was badly damaged and a few others had to be shut down to assess damage.
Consequently, the nuclear reactor crisis posed a real challenge to the country’s energy security. Businesses had to cut their consumption by at least 20% and establishments achieved this to a large extent as summer approached by setting the temperature in offices between 26-27°C. Not only did commercial establishments reduce their electricity usage therefore preventing blackouts, but also saved on electricity bills and reduced the impact on the environment. Before this catastrophe, nobody had imagined working in an office at 26°C.
Since 2013, Hong Kong too has taken measures to encourage consumers to reduce energy consumption especially during the peak summer months. The main energy companies have a commitment with the government to cut energy usage and emissions since 2013. This could be achieved through turning up thermostats, switching off equipment or rescheduling operations.
In Singapore, Singapore Institute of Social Sciences (SUSS) carried out an experiment to understand how cool is enough to be productive. The result is an astonishing 25° C! Reaction times were 10% faster to the same test in a room set at 25°C versus the room set at 21°C.
The National Environment Agency recommends setting the air conditioner temperature at 25°C. We now know that this is based on science. We also have evidence that going from 22 to 23°C leads to a saving of 9% off your electricity bill. The carbon emissions also reduce for every one degree increase in temperature by 10%. Moreover, going from 22 to 25°C leads to energy savings of 34% and one can reduce one’s carbon emissions by a whopping 30%.
So, while cutting down your power bill you can have a positive impact on the environment and contribute towards sustainability.
Every 1° counts! Make a difference today, starting with our homes and offices!

Road to Sustainability: Renewal of Club’s Electricity Contract
Flo Energy has been selected for the Club’s electricity contract, effective from 1 July 2024 to 30 June 2027. At a competitive rate of 18.99 cents per kWh, Flo Energy provides the Club with green energy which is 100% renewable, offsetting our consumption with a tradeable green instruments known as Renewable Energy Certificates (RECs). This decision reflects our commitment to sustainability and reduces the environmental footprint of the Club.

MEMBER IN THE SPOTLIGHT
Featured on Member in the Spotlight this issue is Hugh Spencer and his wife, Jamela. Having been a member for eight years now, chances are you've encountered the couple on the tennis courts or spotted their three kids at the swimming pool. Dive into the article below to unravel Hugh and Jamela's journey at the Club!
CLUB NEWS MAY/JUN 2024 22
Introduce yourself, and what made you join the British Club?
My wife, Jamela, and I joined the British Club eight years ago after our eldest, Phoebe was born. We had lived in the area for some time and loved the casual, family-friendly atmosphere at the Club when we visited with other members. With plans for more kids, it was a no-brainer to become part of the British Club community.
As parents, Jamela and I are lucky enough to have three wonderful children. The aforementioned Phoebe is 9 years old; Penelope is 7 years old, and Freddy rounds out the troupe, having recently turned 6 years old. We spend a lot of time up at the Club, so no doubt you would have seen our three maniacs running around the pool area, playrooms, and tennis courts whenever we can get them out there.
The kids have all been in the swimming programme at the Club for several years, we have them up in the pool a couple times a week. The coaches are remarkable, and the children have all developed a love for being in the water whenever possible. When Jamela isn’t too busy, we often book a tennis court on a Saturday night and have a hit, although I tend to sneak onto the court as often as possible utilising the socials, friendly hits, and testing the neverending patience of super Coach Martin on Sundays.
If you had to choose one dish from the Club to eat for the rest of your life, what would that be and why?
Penelope loves the pizza, Phoebe the beef burger, Freddy the nuggets, and all three love the milkshakes to balance out their healthy diets. I ritualistically order Indian food on Sundays, as it’s the best on the island, Jamela is a huge fan of the chicken wings and margaritas made down at Scores Bar and Restaurant. The coffee Alvin makes at Scores is also exceptional.
Share with us the most memorable event you attended at the Club.
It’s hard to put a finger on a single most memorable event. From a family perspective seeing the staff over the years, make the effort to get to know our family and genuinely show that they care for the kids and Jamela is priceless. There have been so many over the years, but most recently Stephanie, Alvin, and Saat down at scores keeping an eye on the kids whilst Jamela and I play tennis has been particularly memorable.
Finally, tell us something interesting about yourself.
Despite the fact I play tennis more often than my wife, she is the far better player, and my kids are on the verge of being better swimmers than me. Also, that’s the British Club!

Benefits of Sports in Child Development: Building Healthy Habits Early
Motivational speaker Jack Canfield said that “habits will determine your future’”. Ancient Greek philosopher Aristotle thought that “good habits formed at youth make all the difference”. James Clear, author of Atomic Habits, compares breaking bad habits to uprooting a powerful oak, while building good habits is akin to cultivating a delicate flower. Parents play a pivotal role in shaping these habits early on, serving as role models and establishing routines.
The benefits of kids sport are also cognitive and emotional. Providing opportunities for stress relief and positive mood regulation, sports participation while young can build confidence, self-esteem, positive body image, and resilience. If it’s a team sport, children enjoy the added benefits of teamwork, belonging, communication, and friendship (at the right sports clubs, parents enjoy this too!). Research has shown that active children have better academic test scores, problem-solving skills, memory skills, and focus in the classroom than their non-sporty peers.
Starting young - from as young as age 3! - Centaurs team sports focus on gross motor skills and developing the emotional, cognitive and social player. Emphasis for these young preschoolers is on cooperation, communication, teamwork, rule-following and understanding instructions. It’s also a tonne of fun!
And, parents who encourage their children to play sport, really are setting them up with good habits for later in life - teens who play sports are eight times more likely to be active at age 24 than those who drop sports in adolescence (or never played); 77% of adults aged 30+ who play currently play sports did so as children.
As we all know, the physical benefits of sport are numerous. Unstructured active play and organised sports work together to combat sedentary behaviours and reduce risk of obesity. Beyond that, tired children sleep better - and sleep is when most of a child’s development occurs.
Then there are the fine and gross motor skills: running, jumping, kicking, throwing, catching, rolling. These all help with a child’s coordination, balance, agility, flexibility and physical resilience. Regular sport with experienced coaches will lay the foundations for physical competence and confidence.
If you’d like your child to trial rugby for ages 3+, netball for age 5+ or touch for ages 8+, reach out to Centaurs. With professional coaches and over 20 years experience, there’s a reason children fall in love with sport for life when they play with Centaurs. Trials are free, contact membership@centaursgroup.com for details or check out their website (www.centaursgroup.com) or social media channels (@centaurs_sports).

MUSIC Section
By Michelle Kuek, Member of the Club since June, 2012
The British Club Music Section welcomes all members who regard music as something more than mere background noise. Composed of an eclectic bunch of maestros, musos, melodists and hobbyists, the section is a fun and welcoming space where it’s all about the music.
The flagship of the Music Section is the BC Band. With the kind support of British Club management and staff, this band meets on Tuesday evenings to rehearse and jam, and on Member Connect Nights (first Thursday of every month) to gig on stage, at the Windsor Arms.
Social events are held throughout the year and gigs are sometimes requested by the British Club and other keen patrons.
Coming from a wide array of cultures, backgrounds and musical tastes, our fun and friendly band members are encouraged to contribute to the style and substance of the overall play list. Love rock’n’roll? Let’s try your favourites! Feel like crooning to some ballads? Just name the song! Wanna rock the house with some metal? Let’s go!
Whether you play an instrument or love to sing – or both! – the British Club Music Section is eager to welcome you with warm hearts, cold beer and a celebration of everything music means in this world.
Are you ready to share your musical talent with others? We're currently looking for keyboard players and singers to join us. Reach out to us for more details!
Section fees: $10+ per month • Rehearsals and gigs: Free

The Padang: A Timeless Haven for Cricket Tradition and Rivalry
By Rob Annan Member of the Club since May, 2018
Nestled within Singapore’s urban landscape, The Padang stands as a cherished sanctuary for cricket enthusiasts, embodying a century-long affinity between the Lion City and the sport. This historic venue, steeped in colonial legacy, resonates with the echoes of numerous matches and a shared fervour for cricket.
Jonas trying to hit MBS
Since its establishment during British colonial rule, The Padang has been inseparable from cricket, evolving from a recreational space for officers into a revered sporting centre. Its lush grounds have witnessed countless clashes, reverberating with the cheers of spectators and the resounding crack of bat against ball.

At the core of The Padang’s cricketing narrative lies the intense rivalry between the British Club (BC XI) and the Singapore Cricket Club (SCC Sat XI). This storied rivalry, fuelled by history and competitiveness, infuses each match with an added layer of excitement, transcending mere sport to become a clash of cultures and pride.
With a history of the cricket section spanning 21 years, the BC XI has showcased its prowess against formidable opponents. The eagerly anticipated encounters with the SCC Sat XI draw crowds eager to witness the drama unfold. Both teams, comprising seasoned veterans and emerging talents, vie relentlessly for supremacy, each seeking to leave an indelible mark in Singapore’s cricketing history.
Anticipating the edge
As dusk settles over another day of cricketing action at The Padang, its enduring legacy stands as a testament to the timeless allure of the sport. From its humble origins as a colonial pastime to its current status as a bastion of cricketing excellence in Singapore, The Padang epitomizes the spirit of the game. Amidst the fervour of rivalry and competition, one undeniable truth prevails: the love for cricket will continue to thrive on this hallowed ground for generations to come.

GOLF Section Updates
By Christopher James, Member of the Club since January 2016
Changes to the Golf Section Committee
Following the section AGM, changes to the golf committee have been made and Nic Merrow Smith has stepped down as Convenor after 10 years. After an incredible period of commitment and dedication to the role, Nic steps down along with the outgoing committee members, with the sincere thanks and appreciation from the new committee and section members. The section would not be what it is today without his steadfast efforts to promote the game amongst the membership. Nic will still serve on the new committee along with Jay Jhaveri, Gary Smithson, Nick Price, Deborah Farrar, Andy Cox and the new Convenor, Chris Mitchell.

Monthly Social matches
The start of 2024 saw the commencement of the Golf Section’s monthly socials running on Fridays at Keppel Sime and at weekends in Johor Bahru. These events are a good way for section members to get casual games in to fit their busy schedules whilst also qualifying for the end of season Order of Merit event which runs at the end of November. The golf fixture list has more details but the monthly weekday social usually runs on the last Friday of the month at KeppelSime, with the Johor Bahru weekend socials alternating between Forest City or Horizon Hills primarily on nominated Saturdays during the month.
Vietnam Tour
Having been in the planning for over six months, it was with great anticipation that 15 section members and guests set off for Danang, Vietnam early on 15 March for the annual BC Golf Section Tour. A renowned Asia golf destination, the Danang and Hoi An area offers an outstanding range of golf courses amidst stunning scenery. The tour encompassed rounds at Ba Na Hills, VinPearl Golf Nam Hoi An and the BRG Danang Golf Club courses, which provided a mixed challenge of terrain and course layout over three days of tough competition. With a mixed range of handicaps there was a cumulative points competition run over the three days and a team competition on the last day.
Individual honours for the weekend went to Tim Barkham with a very impressive 3 day stableford total of 110 points, followed by junior Aidan Mitchell with 104 and Richard Holloway with 98.
In Sundays Irish Rumble format team competition the leading group of Tim, Richard and Aidan also prevailed, followed in second place by Tan Teng Teng, Jan Chen, Des Thomas and Harald Weber.
With 4 ladies and 1 junior golfer on tour, this proved to be our most diverse tour group so far and with a wide range of handicaps from single digits through to the higher range. The golf was very social whilst also allowing all to compete in the same format which led to some fun on the course and great social events in the evenings including a dinner and tour of old Hoi An city on Saturday evening.
After another fantastic BC Golf Tour, thoughts are already turning to the potential venue for the 2025 tour, where we hope to attract more tourists to the group and enjoy another golf area of Asia for a fun weekend of golf, laughter and friendships made and renewed.

PADEL Section Updates
By Jamie Salamon Member of the Club since September, 2010
As we know, Padel is one of the fastest growing sports in the world. What many do not know is that the game started in Acapulco, Mexico (not Spain), in 1969. The sport has been credited to Enrique Corcuera, who didn’t have enough room at home to build a tennis court, so he built a smaller court with walls and a lower net.
There are some 25 million active Padel players in more than 90 countries, and its popularity is growing due to its easy-to-pick-up, hard-to-master nature. With the sport comes a whole set of vocabulary that is not familiar to many of us. So, if you don’t know a Bandeja from a Banjo, then see below for some essential Padel terms.
Bajada: From the Spanish term “to bring down” comes this attacking shot, where the player from the back of the court hits the ball up from a high contact point and downwards.
Bandeja: One of the most commonly used shots in Padel. It’s a defensive overhead shot often used with backspin, where you try to maintain your position at the net and force your opponents to the back of the court. It comes from the Spanish word for “tray” and refers to the angle at which you hold the racket when hitting the ball, reminiscent of a waiter serving food on a tray in a restaurant.
Chancletazo: Spanish for “a hit with a big flip-flop”, an allusion to the sound the shot makes as well as the motion with which the shot is hit. This is an aggressive, flat, finishing shot from a player very close to the net when they receive an easy ball to their forehand side.
Chiquita: Means “little one” in Spanish and is a soft shot from the back of the court that dives and lands at the feet of the opponents.
Gancho: Defensive overhead shot often used to regain position at the net. The shot is similar to a bandeja, but is hit without spin and is hit higher up on the face of the racket. Comes from the Spanish word for “hook”.
Vibora: Overhead shot that is more aggressive than a bandeja. The shot is aimed at gaining the position at the net. A vibora is hit with spin so the ball bounces off the glass at a difficult angle. The stroke is often used diagonally, and aims to end up at the opponent’s feet to make it as difficult as possible to defend against. Vibora means “viper” in Spanish.

PICKLEBALL Section Updates
By Manoharan Karthigasu Member of the Club since October, 2021
Pickleball is taking Singapore by storm, just like in the US! But forget the stereotype – it’s not just for retirees. Here at the British Club, we’re seeing a surge in younger players too, and we’ve recently welcomed some new faces to the courts.
The fun doesn’t stop at our own club, either. As our Pickleball community grows, we’re reaching out and connecting with others. We recently joined the Mix Doubles Community Challenge, a fantastic event that combined friendly competition with an exhibition match by National Players.
The highlight? The incredible sense of community! It was truly on display at the tournament, and it’s one of the best things about Pickleball.
So, what are you waiting for? Grab a paddle, join the fun, and be part of Singapore’s fastestgrowing sport! We’d love to welcome you to the British Club Pickleball community.
